A highly sensitive sensor based on carbon fiber paper modified with a shungite–copper formazanate composite is presented for the voltammetric determination of lidocaine. The synthesized organometallic complex, composite, and modified electrode are characterized by infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry. The twofold increase in the current of the lidocaine oxidation peak on the modified electrode compared to the unmodified one is associated with the sensitizing effect of the composite modifier, which is due to an increase in the electroactive area and the number of lidocaine binding sites on the electrode surface. The sensor exhibits a wide dynamic range from 2 to 2120 µM with a low limit of detection of 0.18 µM lidocaine and high sensitivity of 0.755 µA/V µM. The interelectrode and intraelectrode repeatability of the analytical signal do not exceed 3.5%. The sensor response is stable within three weeks. The developed sensor was used for the determination of lidocaine in pharmaceuticals. The results of an analysis of real samples demonstrated good reproducibility (RSD ≤ 5.5%) and recovery (98–102%). Non-enzymatic electrochemical blood glucose sensors often suffer from issues such as requiring an alkaline environment, limited monitoring range, and poor anti-interference properties. Carbon substrates have been demonstrated to improve the performance of non-enzymatic sensors, but complex and energy-consuming manufacturing processes restrict their use. Herein, a simple and green approach for the preparation of 3D porous Au/Au-Pt networks (PAAPNs) is proposed using tissue paper for recycling as the nanomaterial substrate to deposit Au-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles. The unique structure of the PAAPNs sensor allows for low-potential operation (-1.0 V) with a wide monitoring range (-0.25 to 36 mM) in a neutral environment. Moreover, the sensor exhibited excellent selectivity (<10% response of interference) even without the use of an anti-interference outer membrane. Further investigation using density functional theory (DFT) simulation revealed the synergistic effect between Au and Pt in promoting glucose oxidation. Overall, this work provides a simple and low-carbon footprint method for creating carbon substrates from tissue paper for recycling, offering new opportunities for fabricating novel value-added nanomaterials for medical sensing applications. In this paper, the aging characterization of a kind of insulating paper modified by magnetron sputtering MgO particles based on a microstrip resonant sensor was presented. Firstly, the modified insulating paper with 0, 15 and 30 min MgO particle sputtering times was prepared by a magnetron sputtering device. After that, the properties of the modified insulating paper with different sputtering times were analyzed through microscopic characterization, infrared spectrum, polymerization degree, dielectric constant, AC breakdown strength and thermal aging experiments. The results show that the dielectric constant of the modified insulating paper decreased obviously, the AC breakdown strength increased and the thermal aging resistance was better after 15 min of sputtering. The overall performance of the modified insulating paper after 30 min of sputtering is reduced due to excessive sputtering. In addition, microstrip resonant sensors are introduced to characterize the thermal aging degree of the modified insulating paper, and two microstrip resonant sensors are prepared: a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) and an interdigital-capacitor-shaped defected ground structure resonator (IDCS-DGS). The resonance frequency deviation of the modified insulating paper samples after aging was measured by microstrip resonance sensors to show the influence of aging temperature on aging degree. The experimental results show that the test results of the microstrip resonance sensors are in good agreement with the traditional characterization methods and can characterize the various aging stages of the modified insulating paper to a certain extent, which proves the feasibility of the characterization method. Flexible paper-based force sensors have garnered significant attention for their important potential applications in healthcare wearables, portable electronics, etc. However, most studies have only used paper as the flexible substrate for sensors, not fully exploiting the potential of paper's micro-nanostructure for sensing. This article proposes a novel approach where paper serves both as the sensitive element and the flexible substrate of force sensors. Under external mechanical forces, the micro-nanostructure of the conductive-treated paper will change, leading to significant changes in the related electrical output and thus enabling sensing. To demonstrate the feasibility and universality of this new method, the article takes paper-based capacitive pressure sensors and paper-based resistive strain sensors as examples, detailing their fabrication processes, constructing sensing principle models based on the micro-nanostructure of paper materials, and testing their main sensing performance. For the capacitive paper-based pressure sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 1.623 kPa−1, a fast response time of 240 ms, and a minimum pressure resolution of 4.1 Pa. As for the resistive paper-based strain sensor, it achieves a high sensitivity of 72 and a fast response time of 300 ms. The proposed new method offers advantages such as high sensitivity, simplicity in the fabrication process, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, providing new insights into the research of flexible force sensors. Inductive contact force sensors, known for their high precision and anti-interference capabilities, hold significant potential applications in fields such as wearable and medical monitoring devices. Most of the current research on inductive contact force sensors employed novel nanomaterials as sensitive elements to enhance their sensitivity and other performance characteristics. However, sensors developed through such methods typically involve complex preparation processes, high costs, and difficulty in biodegradation, which limit their further development. This article introduces a new flexible inductive contact force sensor using paper as a sensitive element. Paper inherently possesses micro- and nanostructures on its surface and interior, enabling it to sensitively convert changes in contact force into changes in displacement, making it suitable for use as the sensor's sensitive element. Additionally, the advantages of paper also include its great flexibility, low cost, wide availability, and biodegradability. Performance testing on this flexible sensor showed good repeatability, hysteresis, sensitivity, and consistency. When used in experiments for monitoring human motion and respiration, this sensor also exhibited great detection performance. The proposed inductive paper-based flexible contact force sensor, with its simple structure, easy manufacturing process, cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and good sensing performance, provides new insights into research for contact force sensors. Hg2+ is one of the most dangerous pollutants that can cause damage to organs and the immune system. The common detection methods of Hg2+ require sophisticated instrumentation and a long time for analysis. The purpose of this study was to develop a sensor for the detection of Hg2+ using filter paper immobilized by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) conjugated with cyanuric acid (CA). The clear color change from pink to bluish purple is the response of the CA-AuNPs filter paper sensor to exposure to Hg2+. Detection can be observed visually with the naked eye and/or with imageJ software; the detection limit is 0.05 µM. The colorimetric response of the sensor was also selective towards Hg2+ after testing with different metal ions. In addition, the response from the sensor was also consistent for lake water samples spiked with Hg2+. The results of this research provide a promising basic technology for the development of sensors that are affordable, fast, portable, and easy to use for the detection and monitoring of Hg2+ levels in water. Paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors are normally prepared using two or more types of fluorescent materials on a paper chip for simple, low-cost and fast detection. However, the choice of multi-step and one-step modifications on the paper chip affects the analytical performance. Herein, a novel paper-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor was designed for the selective detection of tetracycline (TC). Carbon dots (CDs) modified with Eu3+ were combined with a sealed paper-based microfluidic chip by two methods: one-step grafting of CDs-Eu3+ on paper and step-by-step grafting of CDs and Eu3+ on paper. The analytical performance was studied and optimized respectively. The red fluorescence of Eu3+ at 450 nm is enhanced and the blue fluorescence of CDs at 617 nm is quenched by energy transfer in the presence of TC. Under optimal conditions, TC is selectively determined in the linear range from 0.1 μM to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.03 μM by the step-by-step grafting method. In addition, the sealed paper chip could effectively prevent pollution and volatilization from the reagent. Paper‐based analytical devices as a low‐cost and point‐of‐care sensing platform have attracted widespread research interest. However, the device fabrication and signal readout remain a challenge for their real‐world applications. Herein, a technically simple paper‐based sensor is developed by taking advantage of the easily accessible paper and the plasmonic property of gold nanomaterials. The sensing mechanism relies on the iodide‐mediated surface etching of gold nanostars that induces a color change from blue to red of the paper strip. The versatility of the paper substrate in size, shape, and materials allows for the facile immobilization of gold nanostars by a simple immersing method, which is easy to operate and free from specialized skills and equipment. In addition, the readout of the paper strip can be conveniently visualized by the naked eye or through a smartphone. This paper‐based sensor advantages in low cost, light weight, easy handling, and disposability that holds great promise as a point‐of‐care detection platform in resource‐constrained settings. Naphthalenediimide derivative-absorbed papers, which were prepared by dropping chloroform solution, showed fluorescence under photoirradiation after exposure to vapors of small aromatic guests. The fluorescence intensity and maximum wavelength depended on the type of guest aromatic molecules, similar to the crystal. Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a notifiable viral disease caused by Lumpy Skin Disease virus (LSDV). It is usually associated with high economic losses, including a loss of productivity, infertility, and death. LSDV shares genetic and antigenic similarities with Sheep pox virus (SPV) and Goat pox (GPV) virus. Hence, the LSDV traditional diagnostic tools faced many limitations regarding sensitivity, specificity, and cross-reactivity. Herein, we fabricated a paper-based turn-on fluorescent Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) sensor for the rapid detection of LSDV. The LSDV-MIPs sensor showed strong fluorescent intensity signal enhancement in response to the presence of the virus within minutes. Our sensor showed a limit of detection of 101 log10 TCID50/mL. Moreover, it showed significantly higher specificity to LSDV relative to other viruses, especially SPV. Signal readout technologies that do not require any instrument are essential for improving the convenience and availability of paper-based sensors. Thanks to the remarkable progress in material science and nanotechnology, paper-based sensors with instrument-free signal readout have been developed for multiple purposes, such as biomedical detection, environmental pollutant tracking, and food analysis. In this review, the developments in instrument-free signal readout technologies for paper-based sensors from 2020 to 2023 are summarized. The instrument-free signal readout technologies, such as distance-based signal readout technology, counting-based signal readout technology, text-based signal readout technology, as well as other transduction technologies, are briefly introduced, respectively. On the other hand, the applications of paper-based sensors with instrument-free signal readout technologies are summarized, including biomedical analysis, environmental analysis, food analysis, and other applications. Phenols are well-known noxious compounds, which are often found in various water sources. In this research, a new method was used to determine the total phenol and measure the biological activity, by using the microfluidic paper-based (µPAD), smartphone Sensor. It is portable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly. The paper was prepared using filter paper by cutting method. The reagent was dried on the paper. The color sensor of the smartphone device was used as the color intensity sensor of the samples through the images captured by the smartphone through software downloaded to the phone. The focus of the samples is measured from the RGB value of the images taken from the (iPhone 14) device, where each image represents a specific focus. The calibration curve for this method was in the range of M (0.00016--0.5), the correlation coefficient (R2) was equal to (0.9753), the limit of detection was in the amount of (0.000032) M, and the relative standard deviation (RSD%) for the concentration is (0.02) M, for which the examination was repeated (10) times and its value was (0 %), and the recovery value (Recovery%) was equal to (100 %). Conventional detectors are mostly made up of complicated structures that are hard to use. A paper-based microfluidic chip, however, combines the advantages of being small, efficient, easy to process, and environmentally friendly. The paper-based microfluidic chips for biomedical applications focus on efficiency, accuracy, integration, and innovation. Therefore, continuous progress is observed in the transition from single-channel detection to multi-channel detection and in the shift from qualitative detection to quantitative detection. These developments improved the efficiency and accuracy of single-cell substance detection. Paper-based microfluidic chips can provide insight into a variety of fields, including biomedicine and other related fields. This review looks at how paper-based microfluidic chips are prepared, analyzed, and used to help with both biomedical development and functional integration, ideally at the same time. A user-friendly, cost-effectively, portable, and environmentally friendly colorimetric sensor for the quantitative determination of formaldehyde was developed based on the combining of microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD), headspace microextraction (HSME), and digital image colorimetry. Coupling HSME and μPAD led to enhancements in selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor through sample cleanup and analyte enrichment. To construct the μPAD-HSME device, two pieces of paper as the sample and detection zone were placed facing each other so that a small common and sealed space was created between them. The color change occurred when the analyte in the gaseous form crossed this gap and reached the detection zone. Colorimetric sensing in the detection zone was performed based on the Hantzsch reaction. The color change in the detection zone was recorded by a smartphone and digital images were processed using image analysis software based on the RGB model. The influence of some key variables on the sensitivity of the method including derivatization reagent composition, sample volume, extraction temperature, and extraction time was studied and optimized. The linear dynamic range of the method was obtained in two ranges of 0.10–0.75 and 0.75–5.0 mg L−1 with a limit of detection of 0.03 mg L−1. A highly selective solid-state fluorescent sensor based on N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and cotton fiber paper (CFP) is reported for the determination of trace mercury (II)(Hg2+). The N-doped carbon quantum dots on cotton fiber paper (N-CQDs@CFP) was synthesized using a facile one-step microwave hydrothermal method. Multiple approaches were employed to fully investigate the morphology and chemical structure of the paper-based fluorescent sensor. The N-CQDs were chemically bonded onto the CFP, which offers good reproducibility and stability of the sensor. The N-CQDs@CFP showed high-intensity blue emission in dark-field imaging, and the fluorescence was quenched by Hg2+. The Hg2+ in aqueous samples was easily determined and visually monitored. There was good linearity from 0 to 250 μM, and the limit of detection was 34 nM. The paper-based fluorescent sensor provided accurate and rapid determination of Hg2+ upon comparison with flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS). Paper-based electronics have attracted much attention due to their softness, degradability, and low cost. However, paper-based sensors are difficult to apply to high-humidity environments or even underwater. Here, we report a fully paper-integrated piezoresistive sensing system that exhibits flexibility, waterproofing, air permeability, and biocompatibility. This system consists of hydrophobic paper as the substrate and encapsulation layer, conductive paper with a double 'zig-zag' and dotted surface structure as the sensing layer, and silver paste films as the interconnects. The structural design of the sensing layer helps to increase the contact area in adjacent layers under pressure and further improves the pressure sensitivity. The piezoresistive system can be worn on human skin in the ambient environment, wet environment, and water for real-time monitoring of physiological signals with air permeability and waterproofing due to its hydrophobic fiber structure. Miniaturized paper‐based electrochemical sensors were fabricated using kraft paper and CO2 laser, dispensing the need for chemical reagents and controlled atmospheric conditions. This study initially evaluated the paper type and laser processing parameters, enhancing the electrodes′ robustness, electrochemical response, and electrical resistance. The sensors were also treated by applying −1 V for 60 s in 1.0 mol L−1 KCl, which is a simple and rapid procedure. The electrochemical treatment increased the electroactive area and roughness, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. These aspects helped modulate the sensors′ electrochemical response for nitrite determination, improving selectivity and sensitivity for this compound. The sensors also showed repeatability and batch‐to‐batch reproducibility, with 2.2 and 10 % RSD, respectively. Therefore, this work brings a protocol to fabricating competitive electrochemical sensors through a sustainable strategy, opening possibilities for designing new analytical systems. Two imidazole‐based color‐changing fluorescent probes 4‐(4,5‐bis(4‐chlorophenyl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (CIN) and 4‐(4,5‐di(furan‐2‐yl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (FIN) were synthesized and characterized. The new probes CIN and FIN exhibit excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ with relatively low detection limits (0.26 μM and 0.10 μM) and strong anti‐interference properties. Both the probes CIN and FIN complex 1 : 1 with Fe3+ ion, and the complexation constants were 1.165×105 M−1 (CIN) and 1.899×105 M−1 (FIN), respectively. Moreover, CIN and FIN could be recycled by EDTA and could effectively monitor Fe3+ ions at pH 4–10, which ensures the sensor's potential for detecting Fe3+ in actual aqueous solutions. The probes were further applied to the detection of Fe3+ in the actual reaction of Fe2+ oxidation, and the filter paper and the probe solution are combined to make an indicator to detect Fe3+ more conveniently and quickly. Food is necessary for survival, and contamination can shorten humans' lives on Earth in all dimensions. Real‐time screening of food pollutants, such as toxins, infectious agents, and chemical contaminants, is in high demand today. Thus, a cost‐effective and ecologically benign technology must be developed to detect food contamination in a rapid fashion. Nanoparticle (NP)‐based paper sensors are one of the most important alternatives to traditional methods because these are simple, inexpensive, highly selective, and sensitive tools. In the first part of the review article "General considerations" we give information about conventional flexible platforms and consider the advantages and disadvantages of paper when used in humidity sensors, both as a substrate and as a humidity-sensitive material. This consideration shows that paper, especially nanopaper, is a very promising material for the development of low-cost flexible humidity sensors suitable for a wide range of applications. Various humidity-sensitive materials suitable for use in paper-based sensors are analyzed and the humidity-sensitive characteristics of paper and other humidity-sensitive materials are compared. Various configurations of humidity sensors that can be developed on the basis of paper are considered, and a description of the mechanisms of their operation is given. Next, we discuss the manufacturing features of paper-based humidity sensors. The main attention is paid to the consideration of such problems as patterning and electrode formation. It is shown that printing technologies are the most suitable for mass production of paper-based flexible humidity sensors. At the same time, these technologies are effective both in the formation of a humidity-sensitive layer and in the manufacture of electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polypyrrole (PPy) has high electrical conductivity, good environmental stability, and reversible electrochemical redox characteristics, which makes PPy responsive to changes in environmental humidity values. In this work, a humidity sensor with a good response to humidity was prepared using in situ polymerization of PPy in filter paper doping with acetic acid. A possible sensing mechanism of conductive polymers is proposed and the conjecture is verified by experiments. The results demonstrated that the PPy/filter paper-based humidity sensor provides an electron migration channel with the capability of detecting the relative humidity. External humidity stimulation can regulate the electrochemical reaction of PPy. The reduction reaction occurs near the water side to generate the nucleophilic product OH–. The PPy system loses electrons to form carrier directional channels, resulting in changes in the output voltage measured between the two electrodes. The PPy/filter paper-based humidity sensor exhibits the moisture dependent voltage response over a wide range from a relative humidity of 11–98%, and a response/recovery time of 43/51 s as it was placed between relative humidity of 33% and 98%. In addition, unlike the traditional sensing mechanism, the voltage sensing mechanism raised here shows self-powered ability with no need for an additional power unit. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and rhodamine B (RhB) were physically mixed to construct a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CQDs@RhB) for the quantitative and visual detection of Hg2+. After adding Hg2+, the emission peak of CQDs at 445 nm was quenched and the peak of RhB at 575 nm remained unchanged; the ratio of the two emission peaks had a linear relationship with the Hg2+ concentration. The CQDs@RhB had a detection range of 0–15 µM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 65.93 nM and a color change from blue to pink was visible to the naked eye under ultraviolet light. The study revealed a static quenching mechanism of CQDs@RhB. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ in real water and rice samples with satisfactory results. In addition, a portable fluorescent paper-based sensor platform was developed using computer software assistance. The relationship with Hg2+ concentration was constructed by converting the pictures obtained under ultraviolet light to RGB color mode for visualization and quantitative detection of Hg2+. High-performance electronics demand extremely sensitive piezo-resistive sensors with important features such as low-fabrication cost, easy implementation, low power consumption and high-pressure sensitivity over broad pressure range. Herein, we report a flexible piezo-resistive paper-based device functionalised by WSe2 nanosheets. An efficient and low-cost fabrication strategy using Whatman filter paper and tissue paper is adopted for versatile sensing applications. The WSe2 nanosheets were synthesized by high-yield and size-controlled liquid phase exfoliation technique. The flexible WSe2 nanosheets-paper sensor shows excellent response in broad pressure range of 1 Pa–100 kPa with exceptionally high sensitivity of 29.24 kPa−1, current responsivity of 70 and response time of 100 ms. The pressure sensor is also employed to recognize the pressure generated due to finger tapping. A three-channel paper-based chip was utilized to detect aluminum (Al) ions on a smartphone platform by the chromogenic method. The color change after Al3+ detection is represented with △E which was photographed and calculated by app on smartphone. The detection limit is 0.05 mg/L and the detection range is from 0.05 mg/L to 10 mg/L which indicates the application potential in the field of biochemical detection. A highly stable and luminescent lead-free manganese(II) halide hybrid MnBr4(TMN)2 (C34H42Br4MnN4) was designed and synthesized by introducing a large cationic organic spacer. The MnBr4(TMN)2 displays high luminescence with quantum yields up to 77% and possesses turn-off fluorescence behavior (Ex/Em=365/546 nm) for water. These properties make the MnBr4(TMN)2 a promising candidate as an alternative indicator for the detection of water with potential applications for the fabrication of LEDs. Herein, a paper-based sensor based on MnBr4(TMN)2 is described for the determination of water content in organic solvents. The mechanism of water sensing can be tentatively explained by fluorescence quenching originating from the destruction of water due to the Mn–Br bonds of MnBr4(TMN)2. The MnBr4(TMN)2-based paper sensor exhibits an excellent discrimination ability of water content in the range 0–25.0% with a detection limit of 0.27%. Satisfactory recoveries (94.91±4.09% to 103.23±2.38%) are obtained in spiked ethanol solvent samples, which demonstrate that the MnBr4(TMN)2-based paper sensor is capable of detecting water content in real ethanol solvent samples. This review article covers all types of paper-based humidity sensor, such as capacitive, resistive, impedance, fiber-optic, mass-sensitive, microwave, and RFID (radio-frequency identification) humidity sensors. The parameters of these sensors and the materials involved in their research and development, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, semiconductors, and polymers, are comprehensively detailed, with a special focus on the advantages/disadvantages from an application perspective. Numerous technological/design approaches to the optimization of the performances of the sensors are considered, along with some non-conventional approaches. Nowadays, in the clinical, pharmaceutical, and environmental sectors, the development of facile and sensitive analytical methods and/or innovative devices for the follow-up and detection of antibiotics and pharmaceutical formulations, in general, are urgently needed and still challenging. This work declared three vital applications for broad-spectrum nitrofurantoin (macrofuran) antibiotic detection and quantification: A colorimetric method, a coated paper strip-based nano-lanthanum complex prototype and fabrication of smart electronic color sensor device-based coated paper strips. The colorimetric method showed a significant response upon increasing the concentration of the nitrofurantoin in a range between (1.0–100.0 ng/mL) via a visual color change from orange-yellow to red colors degree with detection and quantification limits of 0.175 and 0.53 ng/mL, respectively, whereas the nano-lanthanum complex coated paper strip prototype showed qualitative on-site sensing for nitrofurantoin via naked eye color changes which can be detected anywhere. Moreover, a smart prototype for detecting macrofuran in the means of paper color change in the RGB color component extraction algorithm and the grayscale projection value processing algorithm was fabricated. The change in RGB color on the coated paper strip was detected using an electronic color sensor device. The developed colorimetric method, coated paper strip, and the electronic color sensor device prototype exhibited fast, simple, costless, and selective towards macrofuran over the competing analyzed. A newly developed research topic, fabricated paper-based microfluidic sensors, was discussed in the field of low-cost environmental detection. Distinguished with the traditional dipstick or lateral-flow setups, these paper-based microfluidic sensors can serve as a tool for onsite quantitative and semi-quantitative measurements, without risks to cause environmental pollution. They have attracted increasing interest since the first easy-fabricated paper-based setup reported by Whitesides group in 2007. Most of the publications utilized paper-based sensors in clinical detection. In recent years, some groups started to use these sensors in environmental measurement, leading to precise, easy operation, low-cost, and eco-friendly methods for onsite detection. In recent years, paper-based Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have received extensive attention in the field of rapid analysis. However, obtaining quantitative SERS results is still challenging because of the inferior uniformity originating from the irregular morphology of the filter paper. In this work, a novel paper-fluidic SERS sensor was developed and its in-depth applications in the real-word quantitative analysis of contaminants in complex matrices were demonstrated. In particular, the Au@Ag core-shell nanospheres were labeled with an internal standard molecule to successfully normalize the fluctuation of the SERS signal caused by the microstructure of the filter paper, which could significantly improve the detection accuracy and accomplish the SERS quantitative analysis. In addition, a facile and robust strategy for the fabrication of a paper-based SERS sensor, which uses a dropper and mask to transfer the nanoparticle monolayers, was developed. This convenient and flexible approach effectively achieved a precise patterned assembly of nanoparticles on the filter paper. Furthermore, the paper-fluidic SERS sensor was fabricated by cutting and packaging for two detection modes, i.e., lateral-flow and vertical-flow, which generates the functionalization of the paper-based SERS substrate. Both detection modes integrated sample pretreatment and sample enrichment with SERS detection were applied to accurately detect the pesticide thiram in a complex sample of orange juice with pulp. In summary, this paper-fluidic SERS sensor with a simple preparation process and integrated functions is an ideal candidate for real sample analysis without pretreatment. Stimuli-responsive materials play a crucial role in developing sensor technology for rapid colorimetric and fluorometric detection applications. Their ability to undergo changes in response to external stimuli makes them suitable for creating naked-eye sensors, enabling rapid detection of hazardous ions. In this study, our main objective was to synthesize oxazolidine-based polymer nanoparticles (OX-PNPs) that exhibit dual colorimetric and fluorometric responses. These OX-PNPs were developed as sensors specifically for the detection of the cyanide ion (CN–) in solution and human blood plasma. We prepared stable emulsions of polymer nanoparticles by copolymerizing methyl methacrylate and different amounts of acrylamide through emulsion polymerization. The addition of synthesized oxazolidine to the latex samples resulted in the formation of OX-PNPs. After addition of OX-PNPs 1–7 to a solution of CN– in deionized (DI) water, instant chromogenic changes from orange to pink, accompanied by spectral shifts in the UV–Vis and increase in emission intensity spectra was observed. Notably, the detected concentration limit of OX-PNPs for CN– was found to be within the range of 3.67 × 10-9 to 1.66 × 10-8 M, surpassing the recommended guideline value for CN– in drinking water established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, we successfully developed paper-based test strips using OX-PNPs for the colorimetric and fluorometric detection of CN– in solution. These paper test strips exhibited rapid and distinct color changes from the original orange to pink upon exposure to CN–. By employing Job's plot method, we confirmed a 1:1 stoichiometry complex formation between OX-PNPs and CN– anions. Additionally, OX-PNPs demonstrated pH-responsive behavior, displaying observable color changes in different pH solutions and on the prepared paper-based sensors across a pH range of 1–14. The pH-sensing ability of OX-PNP 7 paper strips was investigated by FESEM. These unique colorimetric and fluorometric properties make OX-PNPs ideal for applications in ionochromic and acidochromic paper-based sensors, offering immediate and reliable responses. Through this work, for the first time we present a novel application of intelligent pigments, namely oxazolidine-based polymer nanoparticles, for both intelligent artwork creation using a single pigment and as a cyanide detector in human blood plasma. This paper presents the development and optimization of a cost-effective paper electrochemical sensor for the detection of TNT using Fe 3 O 4 –Au core-shell nanoparticles modified with cysteamine (Fe 3 O 4 @Au/CA). The sensor was constructed by modifying a graphite paste with the aforementioned nanoparticles, which facilitated the formation of a Meisenheimer complex between cysteamine and TNT as an electron donor and an electron acceptor, respectively. The central composite design was employed to optimize four key parameters pH, modifier percentage, contact time, and buffer type to enhance the performance of the sensor. The detection limit was found to be 0.5 nM of TNT, while the linear range of the electrode response spanned from 0.002 μM to 10 μM. The simplicity and low cost of the sensor make it highly attractive for practical applications, particularly in scenarios where rapid and on-site TNT detection is required. Irregularities in breathing patterns can be detected using breath monitor sensors, and this help clinicians to predict health disorders ranging from sleep disorders to heart failures. Variations in humidity during the inhalation and exhalation of breath have been utilized as a marker to detect breath patterns, and graphene-based devices are the favored sensing media for relative humidity (RH). In general, most graphene-based RH sensors have been used to explore resistance change as a measurement parameter to calibrate against the RH value, and they are prone to noise interference. Here, we fabricated RH sensors using graphene ink as a sensing medium and printed them in the shape of interdigital electrodes on glossy paper using an office inkjet printer. Further, we investigated the capacitance change in the sensor for the RH changes in the range of 10–70%. It exhibited excellent sensitivity with 0.03 pF/% RH, good stability, and high intraday and interday repeatability, with relative standard deviations of 1.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Finally, the sensor was embedded into a face mask and interfaced with a microcontroller, and capacitance change was measured under three different breathing situations: normal breathing, deep breathing, and coughing. The result show that the dominant frequency for normal breath is 0.22 Hz, for deep breath, it is 0.11 Hz, and there was no significant dominant cough frequency due to persistent coughing and inconsistent patterns. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a short response and recovery time (<5 s) during inhalation and exhalation. Paper-based sensors overcome the drawbacks of conventional sensors in terms of their flexibility, portability, and stability compared to conventional sensors. Moreover, as a noninvasive bodily fluid, saliva contains various biomarkers related to physical status, which makes it perfectly matched with to use of paper-based sensors to manufacture a convenient and inexpensive disposable sensing device. This review focuses on the recent advances and progress in the design of paper-based salivary sensors and their applications. The first part mainly discusses various paper-based sensors and their advanced compositions, including dipstick assay, lateral flow assay, and microfluidic analytical device. Different detection methods in salivary biomarker detection are specially introduced in the secondary section, then their multiple potential applications and prospects are summarized. The sensor has excellent advantages for saliva detection, provides a reliable platform for point-of-care tests and telemedicine, and epically promotes the development of the medical Internet of Things. Due to the massive use and abuse of pesticides, practices which have led to serious threats to human health, the research community must develop on-site and rapid detection technology of pesticide residues to ensure food safety. Here, a paper-based fluorescent sensor, integrated with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) targeting glyphosate, was prepared by a surface-imprinting strategy. The MIP was synthesized by a catalyst-free imprinting polymerization technique and exhibited highly selective recognition capability for glyphosate. The MIP-coated paper sensor not only remained selective, but also displayed a limit of detection of 0.29 µmol and a linear detection range from 0.5 to 10 µmol. Moreover, the detection time only took about 5 min, which is beneficial for rapid detection of glyphosate in food samples. The detection accuracy of such paper sensor was good, with a spiked recovery rate of 92–117% in real samples. The fluorescent MIP-coated paper sensor not only has good specificity, which is helpful to reduce the food matrix interference and shorten the sample pretreatment time, but it also has the merits of high stability, low-cost and ease of operation and carrying, displaying great potential for application in the on-site and rapid detection of glyphosate for food safety. Paper has been extensively accepted as an ideal platform for fabricating low‐cost, flexible, and environmentally friendly electronics. However, current paper‐based pressure sensors have not fully demonstrated the unique merits of paper, such as cost efficiency, disposability, cuttability, and foldability, mainly because of the limitation of the applied metal electrodes and device configuration. Here, an all‐organic, all‐paper, cuttable, and foldable pressure sensor is demonstrated for the first time, with the high‐conductivity polypyrrole (PPy) printing paper as electrode and the low‐conductivity PPy tissue paper as active layer. Hollow and 3D all‐paper sensors are realized through fabricating the kirigami or origami structure since the device can be freely cut and folded, presenting a universal strategy promising for flexible device design. The cuttability and foldability of device create a unique 3D perception capability. The devices show high sensitivity (4.8 kPa−1 at < 5.5 kPa, 1.7 kPa−1 at 5.5–40 kPa) and wide detection range (up to 40 kPa), providing a capability for full‐range detection of human physiological and motion signals. These results open a feasible route to realize hollow and 3D sensors and fully demonstrate the potential of paper sensors for diverse applications to new‐generation green electronics and portable electronics. Paper-based devices have been very much in the foreground of analytical science recently. This work innovatively proposed a fluorescent paper–based sensor (FPS) constructed on a hybrid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/paper platform where cellulose papers functionalized with carbon dots (CDs) as fluorophores by Schiff base chemistry were loaded on the grooves array of a designed PDMS plate. As a proof of concept, the performance of FPS was investigated with folic acid (FA) as the target analyte. Under optimal conditions, FPS enabled a rapid fluorescence quenching response to FA via inner filter effect in a wide range of 1–300 μmol L−1 with the limit of detection of 0.28 μmol L−1. The feasibility of FPS was further verified by the detection of FA in orange juice and urine samples with satisfactory results. The covalent modification of CDs on paper endowed the FPS with good assay reproducibility and stability. Interestingly, FPS achieved a more sensitive assay of FA than the conventional strategy, by which the same CDs were directly used to detect FA in a solution-based system. The FPS illuminated a novel strategy for construction of reliable and sensitive assays based on paper-based devices. NO2 is a prevalent environmental pollutant, and its reaction with water produces nitric acid, which is one of the main factors contributing to the degradation of books and paper. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a real-time monitoring system for NO2 gas content in the air and establish timely response measures to delay book aging and provide effective protection. In this study, TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) were fabricated using the anodic oxidation method, followed by the preparation of TiO2 NT/MoS2 composites through hydrothermal synthesis. It was observed that flaky MoS2 is attached to the surface of TiO2 nanotubes, forming aggregated structures resembling flower balls. The TiO2 NT/MoS2 nanocomposites were found to exhibit a rapid response with a 5 s response time and an 80 s recovery time towards 367 ppm NO2 at 260 °C. The gas response to 100 ppm NO2 vapor was 3.3, which is higher than all the other gases under the same concentration. Our experimental results demonstrate that compared to pure TiO2 NTs, TiO2 NT/MoS2 composites exhibit a larger specific surface area along with higher sensitivity and faster response times towards various concentrations of NO2 gas. Cancer is one of the major killers across the globe. According to the WHO, more than 10 million people succumbed to cancer in the year 2020 alone. The early detection of cancer is key to reducing the mortality rate. In low- and medium-income countries, the screening facilities are limited due to a scarcity of resources and equipment. Paper-based microfluidics provide a platform for a low-cost, biodegradable micro-total analysis system (µTAS) that can be used for the detection of critical biomarkers for cancer screening. This work aims to review and provide a perspective on various available paper-based methods for cancer screening. Biogenic amines (BAs), nitrogenous molecules usually present in different foods, can be considered an indicator of freshness and food quality since their amount increases during food spoilage. Their detection, possibly in real time via the use of smart packaging, is therefore of crucial importance to ensure food safety and to fulfill consumers' demand. To this end, colorimetric sensors are considered one of the most feasible solutions. Here, we report a user-friendly colorimetric sensing paper able to detect BAs via the naked eye. The sensing molecule is the aglycone genipin, a natural cross-linking agent extracted from gardenia fruit, able to bind BAs producing water-soluble blue pigments. The paper sensor was applied to chicken meat quality monitoring and a quantitative analysis was performed with image acquisition via a smartphone camera, achieving a limit of detection equivalent to 0.1 mM of putrescine. The suitability of the BA sensing paper was assessed by integrating the sensor into smart packaging and analyzing commercial chicken meat samples stored at different temperatures; the results of the sensor paralleled the "best before date" indicated on the label, confirming the potential applicability of the sensor as a smart label. The enormous demand for self-powered sensors in industry 4.0 has drawn a lot of research interest in these vital devices that do not need external power sources. This study presents the development of a self-powered paper-based humidity sensor that uses copper and aluminium as electrodes and a composite of MgCl 2 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as sensing material. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in humidity sensing performance as a result of the addition of CNTs and MgCl 2. In particular, the self-powered paper-based humidity sensor with MgCl 2 /CNTs composites has impressive repeatability, broad detection ranging from 11 % to 97 % relative humidity, and quick response and recovery times of 10 and 46 s, respectively. Furthermore, the self-powered paper-based humidity sensor can generate a maximum voltage of 1.07 V and a maximum power of approximately 1.984 µW. Furthermore, connecting the paper-based humidity sensors in series increases their voltage output, making them useful for charging capacitors and lighting up to six LEDs. This endeavour offers a straightforward, cost-effective, and highly responsive self-powered paper-based humidity sensor that is ideal for high-performance applications in humidity sensing within power generation fields. Herein is presented a novel and efficient portable paper-based sensing platform using paper-incorporated histidine stabilized gold nanoclusters (His-AuNCs), for the sensitive and selective detection of Fe ions from low-volume real water samples based on photoluminescence (PL) quenching. Highly photoluminescent colloidal His-AuNCs are obtained via a novel microwave-assisted method. The His-AuNCs-based sensor reveals a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.2 μM and a good selectivity towards Fe ions, in solution. Further, the fabricated portable sensing device based on paper impregnated with His-AuNCs proves to be suitable for the easy detection of hazardous Fe levels from real water samples, under UV light exposure, through evaluating the level of PL quenching on paper. Photographic images are thereafter captured with a smartphone camera and the average blue intensity ratio (I/I0) of the His-AuNCs-paper spots is plotted against [Fe2+] revealing a LOD of 3.2 μM. Moreover, selectivity and competitivity assays performed on paper-based sensor prove that the proposed platform presents high selectivity and accuracy for the detection of Fe ions from water samples. To validate the platform, sensing assays are performed on real water samples from local sources, spiked with 35 μM Fe ions (i.e., Fe2+). The obtained recoveries prove the high sensitivity and accuracy of the proposed His-AuNCs-paper-based sensor pointing towards its applicability as an easy-to-use, fast, quantitative and qualitative sensor suitable for on-site detection of toxic levels of Fe ions in low-volume real water samples. Flexible respiratory monitoring devices have become available for outside-hospital application scenarios attributable to their improved system wearability. However, the complex fabrication process of such flexible devices results in high prices, limiting their applications in real-life scenarios. This study proposes a flexible, low-cost, and easy-processing paper-based humidity sensor for sleep respiratory monitoring. A paper humidity sensing model was established and sensors under different design parameters were processed and tested, achieving high sensitivity of 5.45 kΩ/%RH and good repeatability with a matching rate of over 85.7%. Furthermore, the sensor patch with a dual-channel 3D structure was designed to distinguish between oral and nasal breathing from origin signals proved in the simulated breathing signal monitoring test. The sensor patch was applied in the sleep respiratory monitoring of a healthy volunteer and an obstruct sleep apnea patient, demonstrating its ability to distinguish between different respiratory patterns as well as various breathing modes. Valproic acid (VPA) is mainly used in the clinic to treat epilepsy, for which the therapeutic window is narrow to avoid causing adverse reactions such as hepatotoxicity and teratogenicity. Therefore, timely therapeutic drug monitoring is needed. A hapten containing a benzene ring and an amino group was designed and used to screen a monoclonal antibody (mAb) 3G10 with high specificity and sensitivity. The IC50 value of mAb 3G10 was ascertained as 68.13 ng mL−1 through an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A colloidal gold-based immunochromatographic strip (CG-ICS) for the detection of free VPA in human serum was developed with gold-labeled mAb 3G10. Qualitative analysis of human serum samples can be conducted through visual observation. The visual limit of detection (vLOD) was 2 μg mL−1, and the cut-off value was 100 μg mL−1. A standard curve for quantitative detection was generated using a portable scanner, with a calculated LOD (cLOD) value of 0.144 μg mL−1 and a linear range of 0.565–48.385 μg mL−1. Comparing the results of CG-ICS for actual positive samples with those of a direct chemiluminescence kit, there was a good correlation between the two methods. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common disease that, in many cases, can be conservatively treated through bracing. High adherence to brace prescription is fundamental to gaining the maximum benefit from this treatment approach. Wearable sensors are available that objectively monitor the brace-wearing time, but their use, combined with other interventions, is poorly investigated. The aims of the current review are as follows: (i) to summarize the real compliance with bracing reported by studies using sensors; (ii) to find out the real brace wearing rate through objective electronic monitoring; (iii) to verify if interventions made to increase adherence to bracing can be effective according to the published literature. We conducted a systematic review of the literature published on Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. We identified 466 articles and included examples articles, which had a low to good methodological quality. We found that compliance a greatly varied between 21.8 and 93.9% (weighted average: 58.8%), real brace wearing time varied between 5.7 and 21 h per day (weighted average 13.3), and specific interventions seemed to improve both outcomes, with compliance increasing from 58.5 to 66% and brace wearing increasing from 11.9 to 15.1 h per day. Two comparative studies showed positive effects of stand-alone counseling and information on the sensors' presence when added to counseling. Sensors proved to be useful tools for objectively and continuously monitoring adherence to therapy in everyday clinical practice. Specific interventions, like the use of sensors, counseling, education, and exercises, could increase compliance. Paper‐based surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors can be fabricated easily by dropcasting or inkjet printing colloidal Au nanoparticles onto cellulose‐based filter papers. They are flexible, economical, and sensitive and provide the crucial advantage of point‐of‐need sampling for application in the field. In this study, paper‐based SERS sensors are fabricated through inkjet printing of a colloidal Au sol onto a filter paper substrate. We have characterized their SERS performances with benzenethiol and pyridine molecules using a handheld Raman analyzer. Due to the heterogeneous loading of the Au nanoclusters on the paper substrate, we introduce the concept of receiver operating characteristic as an alternate measurand to quantify the performance of these sensors. With their inherent filtration sampling capability, we demonstrate the use of paper SERS sensors for the detection of chemical aerosols. Lastly, we present the use of a precision materials printer to deposit quantifiable amounts of analyte (fentanyl) uniformly across the active sensing area of a paper SERS sensor.
