This article discusses the Bibliothèque publique d'information and the library users which frequent it. It examines ways in which the library materials and the services provided to users can be comprehensive enough to cover the needs and expectations of both casual and academic users. The ability of a public library to also function as a research library is thus highlighted. Other topics discussed in the article include the development of library collections, the administration of libraries, and library science.

The collection development role of the academic librarian in the research university library is increasingly subject to significant change as opportunities to build new types of library collections proliferate, particularly with respect to research data. A Purdue Libraries task force was charged with building faculty-produced collections for a data repository prototype. One purpose of the project was to inventory and characterize the resources and skills required of the libraries and its data-collecting librarians. This paper examines the librarian roles and activities that were identified during the project and suggests ways the experience of the task force can inform the roles and activities of librarians who are similarly charged. Books are traditionally set aside at the request of teachers from the main, normal loan collection to be put on reserve temporarily for checking out for a much shorter loan period to ensure that, at the expense of convenient, long-term loans for other users, all the students enrolled in a course have an opportunity to use them. Many studies have found that reserve usages are not high enough to justify the time and effort involved in making the arrangement. This article reveals that the accessibility and availability of materials to students, the idle status of reserve items on the shelf, and the usage of the collection may be improved if the access to books on reserve and on normal loan matches and fits the instructional choices of teachers and the study modes of students. As long as books in print format continue to play a role in the library collection, librarians have to manage their access to the best benefit of the users. Further studies on how the access to library materials can be managed and arranged concertedly to make the usage surpass the 80/20 rule are desired. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The topic of the appropriate job title for school library administrators has been written about in earlier literature but has not addressed the issue from the perspective of future school library administrators. This article presents the results of a pilot study that was guided by the research question: What do future school library administrators believe is an appropriate title for their position? The article reports demographic data, reveals participants' job title preference, and discusses the ways that pilot study feedback will shape the revised data collection instrument to be used in a large-scale study. Among the collections of the Transylvanian Museum Society the library collection was very rich already at the beginning - as it relied on the bequest of János Kemeny -, it included more than 15 000 books, 1083 manuscripts, charters etc. Transylvanian society was proud of the society, and considered its library as the written memory, the representative collection of Transylvanian history. The essay presents the library's activities from the beginning to its closing in 1950. It deals with the professionals having had a major role in its operation (Sándor Mike, Károly Szabó, Zoltán Ferenczi, Pál Erdélyi). The golden age of the library was the time of its moving to a new building in 1909 when the collection got into the most modern new library building of historical Hungary, together with the university library. Political and historical changes have later brought about severe difficulties and damages. After re-foundation in 1990 the legal status of the library collection is still waiting to be solved. This paper presents a review of literature for the evaluation of use of electronic resources and services in Academic libraries. E-metrics and similar methods for evaluation are discussed in detail. The paper highlights how some libraries approached e-metrics to start useful evaluations and dealt with technicalities to achieve better decision making for e-collection, services and infrastructure for their library users. The evaluation of use of e-resources and services is discussed in five parts explaining application of e-metrics, different methods to capture usage data in different settings, types of data requirement by libraries, complexities and technicalities involved in measurement of usage statistics and why such evaluation is significant for libraries. A large number of the libraries'' selection of research papers are based on the quality and quantity of the papers selected. Most recently, a new mode for this type of selection appeared in the field of scientometrics. The Hirsch index provides new viewpoints to meet the criteria regarding the quality of journals. An understanding and use of the Hirsch index provides assistance to those librarians who wish to expand their libraries'' selection, find it important to maintain a higher quality, and want to develop the standards of their library. Strategic business partnerships inform business faculty-librarian (BFL) collaboration. This paper seeks to address how the motivations for business partnerships and faculty-librarian collaborations are similar. A conceptual model suggests that the depth of the BFL relationship significantly enhances electronic collection development outcomes. Literature concerning strategic business alliances, faculty-librarian collaborations, and collection development was examined to determine whether principles that ate applied to strategic business alliances can also be applied to BFL collaborations. A case-in-point is included for illustration. Specific principles of strategic business partnerships can be applied to BFL collaborations aimed at improving electronic collection development. In addition, driving forces such as assessment, communication, and technology influence the nature of alliances across the business and academic arenas. The findings are significant because they demonstrate how BFL collaborations can be made more effective through the application of business principles. BFL collaborations can positively influence electronic collection development in a variety of ways. The paper offers a new and unique conceptual model that improves understanding of the nature and depth of BFL collaborations in the context of electronic collection development. This paper will be of interest to business faculty in particular and faculty in general, and librarians working in diverse library settings, especially librarians aligned with management and business departments. This paper sets out several challenges for libraries and collection development librarians as they seek to remain relevant in a rapidly changing environment. These include changes in ease of information access, increasing interest in unmediated access, ubiquity of similar (even identical collections), and the need to develop unique collections that meet local needs and interests and to develop and promote tools that enhance the use of these collections. Abstract: The paper assessed the library collection, staffing, management and supervision, building space, seating capacity, acquisition, and processing of library materials of the Federal Science and Technical Colleges in Nigeria. Nineteen copies of a questionnaire were mailed to all the nineteen Federal Science and Technical Colleges in Nigeria. Only eleven of the Schools returned their questionnaires, which were used for the study. Result showed that the school libraries were adequately staffed. Their collections were above 2000 textbooks, the minimum standard. However, the library buildings were not only not well located, they also lacked adequate seating spaces. Also, there is no uniform policy on which classification scheme to use in processing the library materials. Abstract: Collection storage and access in libraries with large and complex collections require high level planning and support at the senior management level. A key issue is positioning the collection storage program appropriately within the scope of library wide management to ensure effective support and budgeting. A review of a library''s current collection storage and access situation is a good starting point for the development of a long-term storage plan. The review should consider factors such as collection development policy; statutory responsibilities, for example, Legal Deposit; historical arrangements and cataloguing practices; access and preservation requirements of different categories of the collection; and especially, the range of formats to be stored. The article focuses on the development of American libraries and its effect on librarianship over the past one hundred years in the U.S. It discusses seven major monographs and supplementary readings about book selection and collection management, highlighting on public libraries with a catalog from the American Library Association (ALA). It noted that it was in 1900s that the first comprehensive works on book selection were introduced, including information on community assessment, selection policy development and various details of selection process. Moreover, technological advancement of information was claimed as an important factor which greatly affects collection management.

This paper presents a general model for approaching the problem of control of the active collection of a library through the acquisition and weeding processes. It assumes that age of book and size of holding are important in this process and recognizes constraints related to shelf space and the acquisitions budget. It then discusses three special cases of the model with shelf space the binding constraint as well as certain empirical work that tends to support a negative exponential form for demand as a function of age. This article discusses the relationship between multimedia libraries, the services which they provide to users, and the effect that library collection development and library administration has on the library users. It looks at the increasing demands that users put on library materials, and the ways in which library science in changing in order to keep up.
