Based on the prevalent son preference in China, this paper proposes a new measure of relative bargaining power within the household. Using data from China Health and Nutrition Survey, we show that a woman with a first-born son has a 3.9 percentage points' greater role in household decision-making than a woman with a first-born daughter. Having a first-born son improves the mother's nutrition intakes and reduces her likelihood of being underweight. While thinking of these impacts as being channeled through intrahousehold bargaining power, we cannot fully rule out other possible direct effects of a first-born son on the outcomes. With the rapid development of clothing online shopping, customers have a higher demand for more accurate clothing size recommendation systems. The work this paper presented is compatible with the four body types specified in the Chinese standard. Then, the subdivision was performed where each of the major body types corresponded to four characteristic indices. In addition, each characteristic index had three attributes. Therefore, the female body can be subdivided into 81 types for each major type. Subsequently, this paper suggests an improved clothing size recommendation system that considers subdivided body types. The recommendation criteria in the approach were refined by a pressure distribution analysis through a virtual fitting simulation. Finally, case studies were conducted on customers of body type A (accounting for 52.73% of bodies) to demonstrate the procedures of the proposed approach. INTRODUCTION This study examined the prevalence of tobacco exposure and drinking and ascertained the relationships between tobacco exposure, alcohol drinking, concurrent smoking and drinking, and hypertension in rural southwestern China. METHODS Data were collected from a cross-sectional health interview and examination survey, which included 7572 adults aged ≥35 years, in rural China. Participant demographic characteristics, smoking habits, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), and alcohol drinking habits were obtained using a standard questionnaire. Blood pressure (BP), height, weight, and waist circumference were measured for each participant. RESULTS The overall prevalence of smoking, SHS exposure, drinking, concurrent smoking and drinking, concurrent exposure to SHS and drinking, and hypertension was 37.7%, 27.4%, 16.2%, 12.6%, 1.6%, and 41.3%, respectively. Males had a significantly higher prevalence of smoking (74.1% vs 2.2%, p<0.01), drinking (31.1% vs 1.7%, p<0.01), and concurrent smoking and drinking than females (25.3% vs 0.3%, p<0.01). However, females had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure than males (30.2% vs 20.6%, p<0.01). Ethnic minorities had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure, drinking, and concurrent smoking and drinking, than Han participants (p<0.01). Participants with a higher education level had a higher prevalence of smoking, drinking, and concurrent smoking and drinking than their counterparts (p<0.01). In contrast, participants with a lower education level had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure than their counterparts (p<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that smokers (AOR=1.31; 95% CI: 1.13-1.51), individuals exposed to SHS (AOR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.11-1.43), drinkers (AOR=1.31; 95%: CI: 1.15-1.50), and concurrent smokers and drinkers (AOR=1.45; 95% CI: 1.25-1.67) all had a higher probability of having hypertension (p<0.01). Additionally, concurrent smoking and drinking had the strongest association with the prevalence of hypertension (AOR=1.45; 95% CI: 1.25-1.67; p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic factors play an important role in influencing the prevalence of smoking, exposure to SHS, and drinking in rural southwest China. Interventions to prevent and reduce hypertension should, in particular, focus on smokers, individuals exposed to SHS, drinkers, and, in particular, concurrent smokers and drinkers. Childhood obesity is related to impaired health and to some diseases in adulthood. Overweight children and adolescents have also been shown to experience social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. Thus, it is imperative to investigate the determinants of children and adolescents' weight outcomes. Through analyzing the 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011 waves of survey data released by China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), this paper studied how parental feeding knowledge and practices have impacted the weight status of Chinese children and adolescents aged 6 to 17. The paper focused on exploring how such impacts varied by parental gender and rural-urban residence. Logistic regression was used to conduct the analyses. The results showed that parental feeding knowledge and practices varied by gender and by rural-urban residence. Specifically, food preferences, energy intake (such as carbohydrate, protein and fat intake) and numbers of meals sharing with children showed different patterns among mothers and fathers. Maternal intervention on children and adolescents' eating and physical activities, parental energy intakes and meal sharing also showed rural and urban differences. The results further highlighted that the ways in which parental feeding knowledge and practices influenced children and adolescents' weight status also differed by parental gender and residence. Mothers were "gatekeepers" of children and adolescents' food choices and selection; their feeding practices played a more decisive role when influencing Chinese youth's weight status. This paper investigates peer effects on student weight. Taking advantage of a national survey of middle schools in China, we exploit the BMI variation in randomly assigned classrooms. We find that having heavier peer classmates significantly increases a student's body weight. The results are consistent across various robustness checks based on a standardized measurement of BMI, alternative peer measures, a spurious correlation with height, and the validity of the instruments. Peer effects are more pronounced among female students, nonlocal students, rural students, and students with longer exposure to classmates. The quantile analysis suggests that the peer effect is stronger at the lower end of the BMI distribution. These findings confirm the presence of social multiplier effects in middle schools, which is helpful in establishing health policies for reducing student overweight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review explores the influences of family and school members on children in China, in order to promote healthy eating behaviours among children and prevent childhood malnutrition in the Global South. Family members and school members are defined as parents, guardians (such as grandparents and other relatives), siblings, peers, and teachers. A search of four databases returned 94 articles, 18 of which met the eligibility criteria. Most of the included studies were from mainland China; a few were from Hong Kong and Taiwan. More quantitative than qualitative studies were found, among which, cross-sectional studies were dominant. The 18 papers included in the study explored the influences of family members and school members on the eating behaviours of children, based on seven themes: (1) social–demographic characteristics, (2) food intake of parents, (3) nutritional knowledge and health awareness of family or school members, (4) parents' perceptions of their children's body weight, (5) feeding strategies of family members, (6) family relationships, and (7) intergenerational differences of caregivers. In the current analysis, parental education levels, mother's occupation, health awareness of parents and teachers, and positive feeding styles, such as encouraging healthy eating and controlling overeating, were positively correlated with the healthy eating behaviours of children. Meanwhile, healthy eating behaviours of children were negatively associated with caregivers' lack of nutritional knowledge, misperception of weight, instrumental and/or emotional feeding, and working on nonstandard shifts. More related research using cross-disciplinary approaches is needed and there should be more discussions about how teachers, siblings, and peers affect the dietary behaviours of children. It is important that scales that evaluate body image and related attitudes and behaviors are both reliable and valid to evaluate these constructs in different countries. This paper introduces a series of five papers that examine the measurement invariance of multiple scales for men and women across eight countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the US). The papers examined measures of: sociocultural influences (i.e., appearance-related pressures) on strategies to lose weight/increase muscle; internalization of the thin/muscular ideal; body image; personality constructs; body change strategies to increase muscles and lose weight; and eating regulation. Measurement invariance was generally well-established across the eight countries. One or more items were removed in some scales for some countries to establish invariance. Factor loadings were equivalent across countries and refined scales demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability. The most frequent difference in the scales was in the item intercepts across groups, although most item intercepts were equivalent across groups. Aims: Body-weight fluctuation is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Yet no studies investigate its association with risk of diabetes in adults aged ≥ 60 years. This study aimed to address this issue., Methods: A total of 1,565 participants free of diabetes at baseline in the CHARLS were followed for 4-year. Body-weight was collected at baseline and every 2-year. Body-weight fluctuation was primarily calculated as the root-mean-square-error deviation from the regression line of body-weights against years. The risk of diabetes was estimated using logistic regression analysis., Results: During the 4-year follow-up, 153 participants developed diabetes. The risk of diabetes was increased by 23% (odds ratio [OR] 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06 to 1.43) per every 1-standard deviation higher of body-weight fluctuation after controlling for cardiovascular risk factors. The association appeared pronounced among participants with poor physical performance (both P < 0.03). Participants with overweight/obesity and a high body-weight fluctuation had the largest increase in the risk for diabetes (OR 3.03). The growth status and weight status of Chinese children have experienced remarkable changes in the past decades. Using China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data, this paper examines the secular trends and disparity of the growth status and weight status in Chinese children and further investigates the impact of various family environments on children's growth from 1991 to 2011. We found an increasing trend in standardized growth indicators (height, weight, and BMI), overweight, and obesity from 1991 to 2011. We also observed an increasing disparity in overweight and obesity over time. Family environments had a significant impact on children's growth status and weight status. In particular, children that live in families with a small size, higher family income, better sanitary conditions, and with well-educated parents or overweight parents tended to be taller and heavier and have a higher BMI, lower risk of being underweight, and higher risk of exhibiting overweight and obesity. Further decomposition analysis showed that more than 70% of the disparity in standardized height, weight, and overweight and around 50% of the disparity in standardized BMI, underweight, and obesity could be attributed to heterogeneity in family environments. Responsive feeding serves as an important protective factor for infant growth and overall health development. This study based on self‐determination theory (SDT) aimed to assess the effects of a responsive breastfeeding (RBF) intervention programme on maternal breastfeeding and infant growth and development. A total of 110 mother–infant pairs were recruited and randomly divided into an intervention group (n = 55) and a control group (n = 55). The primary outcomes were breastfeeding motivation score, breastfeeding self‐efficacy (BSE) and exclusive breastfeeding rate; the secondary outcomes were infant physical development at 6 weeks and 3 months. A repeated measures ANOVA indicated that the intervention group had significantly higher Enjoyment scores compared to the control group at three time points: at discharge (MD: 5.28; 95% CI: 3.68 to 6.89; p < 0.001), 6 weeks post‐partum (MD: 5.06; 95% CI: 3.80 to 6.31; p < 0.001) and 3 months post‐partum (MD: 5.24; 95% CI: 4.12 to 6.35; p < 0.001). Similarly, the intervention group reported significantly higher connection and mother's self‐perception scores at discharge (MD: 4.31; 95% CI: 3.07 to 5.56; p < 0.001), 6 weeks post‐partum (MD: 4.69; 95% CI: 3.71 to 5.68; p < 0.001) and 3 months post‐partum (MD: 4.93; 95% CI: 4.14 to 5.72; p < 0.001), compared to the control group. In contrast, the pressure from significant others scores were higher in the control group relative to the intervention group at discharge (MD: −2.09; 95% CI: −2.88 to −1.31; p < 0.001), 6 weeks post‐partum (MD: −4.35; 95% CI: −5.20 to −3.49; p < 0.001) and 3 months (MD: −4.89; 95% CI: −5.70 to −4.08; p < 0.001). Finally, the intervention group also reported higher Instrumental Needs scores at all three time points: at discharge (MD: 1.96; 95% CI: 1.35 to 2.58; p < 0.001), 6 weeks post‐partum (MD: 3.58; 95% CI: 3.05 to 4.11; p < 0.001) and 3 months post‐partum (MD: 1.18; 95% CI: 0.68 to 1.69; p < 0.001). BSE scores were significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group at discharge (MD: 14.29; 95% CI: 10.38 to 18.21; p < 0.001), 6 weeks post‐partum (MD: 14.04; 95% CI: 11.05 to 17.02; p < 0.001) and 3 months post‐partum (MD: 6.80; 95% CI: 4.66 to 8.94; p < 0.001). The rates of exclusive breastfeeding were higher in the intervention group than in the control group at each stage of the intervention (p < 0.01). At 6 weeks post‐partum, the intervention group's infants showed slower weight (t = −0.90, p = 0.371) and length (t = −0.69, p = 0.495) growth compared to the control group, though not significantly. By 3 months post‐partum, there was a significant difference in both weight (t = −3.46, p = 0.001) and length (t = −2.95, p = 0.004) between the groups. The findings in this study suggest that the RBF intervention programme based on SDT may be effective in improving mothers' motivation to breastfeed, building breastfeeding self‐confidence and increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding. The effects of the intervention on infant physical development will need to be verified with longer follow‐up in future research. Key messages: This study validated the application of responsive breastfeeding (RBF) intervention during the exclusive breastfeeding phase of Chinese infants.The RBF intervention may help to increase mothers' level of autonomous motivation for breastfeeding, enhance breastfeeding self‐efficacy and increase exclusive breastfeedingrates. The intervention had no significant effect on the weight and length of 6 week old infants but significantly impacted 3monthold infants, with slower growth observed in the intervention group compared to the control group.Future intervention programmes shouldinclude extended follow‐up periods to investigate the long‐term effects of RBF on infant growth and development. Limited data exist related to low birth weight (LBW) incidence and risk factors in Western China. This paper aims to assess LBW and its relationship with antenatal care (ANC) in the poor counties of Western China. A community-based study in rural Western China was conducted in 2011. A kernel distribution was used to estimate the adjusted LBW incidence, and associations between LBW and socio-demographic or maternal factors were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Among 8,964 participants, 65.7% were weighed at birth. Crude LBW incidence was 6.6% and the adjusted rate was 9.3%. The study revealed that risk factors of LBW are being female, raised within a minority group, and with a family income below the national poverty line. For maternal risk factors, LBW was positively associated with not attending at least five or eight ANC visits, not receiving any ANC during the first trimester, and not having access to assess certain ANC content (weight, blood pressure, blood test, urine test, B-scan ultrasound, and folic acid supplement). There is urgent need to promote quality ANC in poor and rural areas of Western China and to prioritize vulnerable women and children who will benefit from quality ANC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Regulatory actions are increasingly used to tackle issues such as excessive alcohol or sugar intake, but such actions to reduce sedentary behaviour remain scarce. World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on sedentary behaviour call for system-wide policies. The Chinese government introduced the world's first nation-wide multi-setting regulation on multiple types of sedentary behaviour in children and adolescents in July 2021. This regulation restricts when (and for how long) online gaming businesses can provide access to pupils; the amount of homework teachers can assign to pupils according to their year groups; and when tutoring businesses can provide lessons to pupils. We evaluated the effect of this regulation on sedentary behaviour safeguarding pupils. Methods: With a natural experiment evaluation design, we used representative surveillance data from 9- to 18-year-old pupils before and after the introduction of the regulation, for longitudinal (n = 7,054, matched individuals, primary analysis) and repeated cross-sectional (n = 99,947, exploratory analysis) analyses. We analysed pre-post differences for self-reported sedentary behaviour outcomes (total sedentary behaviour time, screen viewing time, electronic device use time, homework time, and out-of-campus learning time) using multilevel models, and explored differences by sex, education stage, residency, and baseline weight status. Results: Longitudinal analyses indicated that pupils had reduced their mean total daily sedentary behaviour time by 13.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -15.9 to -11.7%, approximately 46 min) and were 1.20 times as likely to meet international daily screen time recommendations (95% CI: 1.01 to 1.32) one month after the introduction of the regulation compared to the reference group (before its introduction). They were on average 2.79 times as likely to meet the regulatory requirement on homework time (95% CI: 2.47 to 3.14) than the reference group and reduced their daily total screen-viewing time by 6.4% (95% CI: -9.6 to -3.3%, approximately 10 min). The positive effects were more pronounced among high-risk groups (secondary school and urban pupils who generally spend more time in sedentary behaviour) than in low-risk groups (primary school and rural pupils who generally spend less time in sedentary behaviour). The exploratory analyses showed comparable findings. Conclusions: This regulatory intervention has been effective in reducing total and specific types of sedentary behaviour among Chinese children and adolescents, with the potential to reduce health inequalities. This paper examines the associations between Chinese and Korean immigrant parents' early life material and food deprivation and their concern about their child's diet or weight, preferences for heavier children, and weight-promoting diet and child weight, alongside the moderating role of parents' acculturation toward American culture. In 2010, Chinese and Korean immigrant parents of children ages 3-8 years in the United States (N = 130) completed interviews which asked about their perceived early life material deprivation and food insecurity, acculturation, child feeding practices, and evaluations of whether their child weighed more or less than the ideal, and child consumption of soda and candy. Independent measures of child and parent BMI were also obtained. Regression analyses revealed that parents' early life food insecurity was associated with the evaluation that their child should weigh more than they do and greater consumption of soda and sweets by their child, among the least acculturated parents. Parental material deprivation was associated with more laissez-faire child feeding practices: less monitoring, less concern about the child's weight or diet, and less perceived responsibility for the child's diet, but only among less acculturated parents. Overall, the results suggest that immigrant parents' child feeding practices and body size evaluations are shaped by material hardship in childhood, but these influences may fade as acculturation occurs., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Aim: Analysed clinical characteristics and influencing factors for hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and providing a scientific reference for precision nursing care of hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients with T2DM. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: This study involved 378 hospitalized patients diagnosed with T2DM who have suffered hypoglycemia. Through questionnaires and electronic medical records to obtain the data concerning the general information, clinical symptoms, all recorded blood glucose information, and the diabetes knowledge and self‐management level of the patients. The clinical characteristics and influencing factors for hypoglycemia were analysed on the basis of the classification of hypoglycemia published by the American Diabetes Association in 2020. Results: Among 378 patients, 207 patients (54.76%) were experiencing Grade 1 hypoglycemia and 171 patients (45.24%) were experiencing Grade 2 hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia and Grade 2 hypoglycemia in patients with T2DM occurred predominantly within the first 3 days of hospitalization. Hypoglycemia occurred most frequently after breakfast (74 cases, 19.6%), of which Grade 1 hypoglycemia and Grade 2 hypoglycemia accounted for 50%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression identified risk factors for Grade 2 hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes: older age, longer duration of diabetes, low body weight, diabetic nephropathy stages 4–5, diabetic autonomic neuropathy, inadequate self‐management ability and diabetes knowledge, and lower educational background. Conclusions: Hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes occurs in the first 3 days during the hospitalization and most often after breakfast during the full day. The study aimed to investigate RRR- α -Tocopherol and synthetic α -Tocopherol stereoisomers in maternal plasma, cord plasma and breast milk from different regions of China, providing a reference for further guidance on maternal diet and the potential need to supplement mothers with vitamin E. Two hundred and twenty-one sample sets from maternal plasma, cord plasma and three stages of milk (colostrum: 1–5 d after delivery; transitional milk: 10–15 d; mature milk: 40–45 d) were collected longitudinally in six regions of Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Chengdu, Lanzhou and Changchun. α -Tocopherol and the stereoisomers were determined by HPLC with a fluorescence detector. The RRR configuration accounted for more than 80 % of α -Tocopherol in maternal plasma, cord plasma and breast milk. Overall, there were regional differences both in α -Tocopherol and RRR. There were significant correlations between α -Tocopherol and RRR in maternal plasma, cord plasma and milk (P < 0.001). As well as negative correlations among α -Tocopherol, RRR and weight-related indicators, which refer to pre-gestation weight and BMI, pre-delivery weight and BMI and pregnancy weight gain, in almost all of samples. This study suggested that RRR- α -Tocopherol was the dominant configuration of α -Tocopherol and the main active form of vitamin E in the early life, guiding the rational supplement of pregnant women and the addition of α -Tocopherol in infant formula milk powder. In 1993 a territory-wide cross-sectional growth survey on 25,000 Chinese children from birth to 18 years was performed in Hong Kong. Compared to the last growth survey in 1963, definite secular changes were observed. There was an increase of final adult standing height of 3.6 cm in boys and 2.7 cm in girls, in which 1.8 cm and 0.5 cm respectively for boys and girls was accounted for by the sitting height. Thus most of the height increase had occurred in the leg length in girls, but in boys only half of it. The height difference was more marked during the pubertal years because secular change had brought about an earlier sexual maturation, including an advancement of median menarcheal age by 0.5 year, coupled with an earlier growth spurt. This paper also provides the first growth standards for Chinese from birth to 18 years, with percentile charts on both standing height and sexual maturation in boys and girls.

This is a longitudinal study involving 202 Chinese infants in Chengdu City and 174 Hong Kong infants in their first two years of life. Their weight and length growth are compared, and the seasonal effects on the early age growth for the two groups are illustrated by using a multilevel model approach. The Chengdu infants are found to grow faster in the first 10 months, then stay longer, heavier and fatter for the rest of the study period. The seasonal effect on weight growth for the two groups is the same with the fastest growth in winter and slowest in summer and with a mean difference of about 0.16 kg. For length the fastest is in summer for Chengdu infants but in winter for Hong Kong infants. The difference between the slowest and fastest is about 0.49 cm for the two groups. The approach used in the paper is discussed from a practical viewpoint. The reasons for the growth differences between the two groups of Chinese infants are also discussed.

Background: To investigate the association between clinical periodontal parameters of periodontitis, serum lipid metabolism markers and adipokines' levels in patients with obesity and periodontitis. Methods: A total of 112 patients admitted to Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were included in this study. They were divided into normal body weight group (18.5 < body mass index, BMI < 25, n = 36), overweight group (25 ≤ BMI < 30, n = 38), and obesity group (BMI ≥ 30, n = 38) accordingly. The diagnosis of periodontitis was based on the newest international classification of periodontitis. Full-mouth clinical periodontal measurements included: plaque index, periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing. Gingival crevicular fluid samples were analyzed for: Interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, Interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein. Serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured. Visfatin, leptin, resistin, and adiponectin levels in serum were also measured. Results: The ratio of participants without periodontitis was significantly highest in normal weight group, and the proportion of severe periodontitis (stage III and IV) was highest in obesity group. The periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and the inflammatory cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid in obesity group and overweight group were higher than those in normal body weight group. The BMI and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were significantly positive correlated with periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment level. Using a Multivariate logistic regression model, periodontitis correlates to BMI, WHR, serum levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and adipokines such as visfatin, leptin, and resistin. Conclusions: Obesity is positively correlated with the aggravation of periodontitis. Obesity may aggravate the damage to periodontal tissue by regulating the secretion level of adipokines. Objective: This study was conducted to examine the association between the A118G polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene and the risk of increased VAS scores in patients with colorectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic radical resection for which fentanyl was used. Methods: The OPRM1 A118G genotype in subjects were detected. The relationship between the A118G polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene and increased Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores throughout the perioperative period was explored. A total of 101 patients receiving fentanyl anesthesia undergoing laparoscopic radical resection of colon tumors at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University between July 2018 and December 2020 were investigated in the present study. The relative risk between the A118G polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene and VAS ≥ 4 in the PACU was estimated using the adjusted effect relationship diagram, baseline characteristic analysis, and multiple logistic regression analysis. The relationship between the A118G polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene and VAS in the PACU, as well as perioperative fentanyl usage, was examined after confounders were adjusted. Results: Subjects with OPRM1 A118G wild gene A were less sensitive to fentanyl, which was a risk factor for PACU VAS ≥ 4. Before the model was adjusted, the odds ratio (OR) was 14.73 (P = 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, weight, height, and the duration of surgery, the OR increased to 16.55 (P = 0.001). When adjusting for age, sex, weight, height, surgery duration, COMT Val158Met gene polymorphism, CYP3A4 *1G gene polymorphism, and CYP3A5 *3gene polymorphism, the OR was 19.94 (P = 0.002). Moreover, OPRM1 A118G wild type gene A was found to be a risk factor for increased dosage of fentanyl in the PACU. Before the model was adjusted, the OR reached 16.90 (P = 0.0132). After adjusting for age, sex, body weight, intraoperative fentanyl dosage, surgery duration, and height, the OR was 13.81, (P = 0.0438). When adjusting for age, sex, weight, height, intraoperative fentanyl dosage, surgery duration, COMT Val158Met gene polymorphism, CYP3A4 *1G gene polymorphism, and CYP3A5 *3 gene polymorphism, the OR reached 15.23, (P = 0.0205). Conclusion: The A118G polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene carrying wild gene A was a risk factor for VAS ≥ 4 in the PACU. Moreover, it is a risk factor for increased dosage of fentanyl in the PACU. Phantoms of different sizes, as indicated by several studies, have a significant impact on the accuracy of dose calculations. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a body-size-dependent series of Chinese standing adult phantoms to improve the accuracy of radiation dosimetry. In this study, the Chinese reference polygon-mesh phantoms C R A M _ S / C R A F _ S have been refined and a method for automatically constructing lymph nodes in a mesh phantom has been proposed. Then, based on the refined phantoms, this study has developed 42 anthropometric standing adult computational phantoms, 21 models for each gender, with a height range of 145–185 cm and weight as a function of body mass index corresponding to healthy, overweight and obese. The parameters were extracted from the National Occupational Health Standards (GBZ) document of the People's Republic of China, which covers more than 90% of the Chinese population. For a given body height and mass, phantoms are scaled in proportion to a factor reflecting the change of adipose tissue and the internal organs. The remainder is adjusted manually to match the target parameters. In addition, the constructed body-size-specific phantoms have been implemented in the in-house THUDose Monte Carlo code to calculate the dose coefficients (DCs) for external photon exposures in the antero-posterior, postero-anterior and right lateral geometries. The results showed that organ DCs varied significantly with body size at low energies ( < 2 M e V ) and high energies ( > 8 M e V ) due to the differences in anatomy. Organ DC differences between a phantom of a given size and a reference phantom vary by up to 40% for the same height and up to 400% for the whole phantom. The influence of body size differences on the DCs demonstrates that the body-size-dependent Chinese adult phantoms hold great promise for a wide range of applications in radiation dosimetry. Background: Epidemiological studies have reported that among participants with impaired cognitive, overweight and mild obesity are associated with substantially improved survival, this finding has been termed the "obesity paradox" and has led to uncertainty about secondary prevention. Aims: To explore whether the association of BMI with mortality differed in different MMSE score, and whether the obesity paradox in patient with cognitive impairment (CI) is real. Methods: The study used data from CLHLS, a representative prospective population-based cohort study in China, which included 8348 participants aged ≥ 60 years between 2011 and 2018. The independent association between BMI and mortality in differed MMSE score by calculating hazard ratios (HRs) in multivariate Cox regression analysis. Results: During a median (IQR) follow-up of 41.18 months, a total of 4216 participants died. In the total population, underweight increased the risk of all-cause mortality (HRs, 1.33; 95% CI 1.23–1.44), compared with normal weight, and overweight was associated with a decreased risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.83; 95% CI 0.74–0.93). However, compared to normal weight, only underweight was associated with increased mortality risk among participants with MMSE scores of 0–23, 24–26, 27–29, and 30, and the fully-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) for mortality were 1.30 (1.18, 1.43), 1.31 (1.07, 1.59), 1.55 (1.34, 1.80) and 1.66 (1.26, 2.20), respectively. The obesity paradox was not found in individuals with CI. Sensitivity analyses carried out had hardly any impact on this result. Conclusion: We found no evidence of an obesity paradox in patients with CI, compared with patients of normal weight. But underweight individuals may have increased mortality risk whether in the population with CI or not. And overweight/obese people with CI should continue to aim for normal weight. Objective: This study compared the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension and associated factors in China and the United States (US). Methods: Adult data from nationally representative samples were derived from the Chronic Disease and Risk Factors Surveillance in 2010 and 2013 in China and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2010 and 2013 in the US. Multivariable logistic and Poisson regression analysis were conducted to assess associations of the four outcomes with body weight status and behavioral factors. Results: Age-standardized prevalence rates of hypertension was 35.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.4% to 36.1%) in 2010 and 29.8% (95% CI: 29.4% to 30.2%) in 2013 in China, and 35.3% (95% CI: 33.6% to 37.1%) in 2010 and 37.9% (95% CI: 36.0% to 39.7%) in 2013 in the US. Among hypertensive participants, the agestandardized rates of treatment were 18.4% (95% CI: 17.9% to 18.9%) in 2010 and 23.8% (95% CI: 23.1% to 24.6%) in 2013 in China and 54.5% (95% CI: 50.3% to 58.7%) in 2010 and 50.9% (95% CI: 46.5% to 55.3%) in 2013 in the US; the age-standardized hypertension control rates were 3.2% (95% CI: 3.0% to 3.5%) and 5.7% (95% CI: 5.3% to 6.0%) in 2010 and 2013 in China and 50.6% (95% CI: 46.2% to 55.0%) and 55.3% (95% CI: 50.3% to 60.3%) in the US. Obesity was significantly associated with prevalence, awareness and control rates in both countries. Different from the US, obesity was negatively associated with hypertension control in China. Conclusion: Hypertension prevalence in China is similar to that in the US, but the control rate in China was significantly lower. Background We aimed to explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and body weight perception (BWP) with suicidal behaviors among mainland Chinese adolescents. Methods A nationally representative sample (N  = 10 110) of Chinese adolescents was assessed in this study. Suicidal behaviors (ideation, plan and attempt) were evaluated by four self-reported questions. Generalized linear mixed model was used to estimate the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the association between BWP/BMI with suicidal behaviors. Results The prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicidal plan and suicidal attempt was 12, 5 and 2.1%, respectively. After adjusting potential covariates, perceiving oneself as obese was significantly associated with increased risks of suicidal ideation (OR: 2.4, 95% confidence intervals, CI: 1.6–4.0, P  = 0.001), suicidal plan (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.5–6.3, P  = 0.002) and suicidal attempt (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.5–9.1, P  = 0.001) compared with perceiving as normal weight among male adolescents; the effect attenuated to null among female adolescents. Perceiving oneself as underweight and overweight both exhibited significant adverse effect on suicidal behaviors (only suicidal ideation and suicidal plan) compared with perceiving oneself as normal weight among male adolescents, but not among female adolescents. The actual measured BMI was not significantly associated with suicidal behaviors among neither gender. Introduction: Obesity is an important cause of a range of metabolic diseases. However, the complex mechanisms of obesity and its related diseases make some weight loss methods ineffective or have safety issues. Ginseng, a specialty of Jilin Province in China with both edible andmedicinal value, containsmainly ginsenosides and other components. In order to study the anti-obesity effect of ginseng, network pharmacology was used to predict and screen the active ingredients, action targets and signaling pathways of ginseng. We found (20R)-panaxadiol (PD) is a more desirable active ingredient due to its high drug-like properties and high bioavailability. Moreover, it is closely related to cAMP pathway which is more important in metabolism regulation. The corresponding pharmacodynamic targets of PD include ADRB2 (the gene encoding the ß2-adrenoceptor receptor). Our study aimed to investigate whether Panaxadiol can promote white adipocyte beigeing and increase thermogenesis through modulating the ß2/cAMP pathway to exert antiobesity effects. Methods: In vivo, we established high-fat feeding obesity model, genotypically obese mice (ob/ob) model, and administered PD (10mg/kg). PD treatment in ob/ob mice along with ß2 receptor inhibitor ICI118551. In vitro, differentiated mature 3T3-L1 cells were given palmitate (PA) to induce hypertrophy model along with PD (20 µM). Results: The results of this study demonstrated that PD significantly reduced body weight, improved glucose tolerance and lipid levels in high-fat-induced obese mice and ob/obmice, and also reduced lipid droplet size in PA-treated hypertrophic adipocytes in vitro. Molecular biology assays confirmed that cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation was increased after PD administration, and the expression of thermogenesis-related proteins UCP1, PRDM16 andmitochondrial biosynthesis-related proteins PGC-1a, TFAM and NRF1 were increased. Molecular docking results showed a low binding energy between ß2 receptors and PD, indicating an affinity between the ß2 receptor and PD. In addition, the ß2 receptor inhibition, reversed the anti-obesity effect of PD on the body weight, lipid droplets, the expression of thermogenesis-related proteins and CREB phosphorylation in ob/ob mice. Discussion: These results suggest that PD may promote the expression of thermogenic proteins through phosphorylation of CREB via ß2 receptor activation, and thus exert anti-obesity effects. This is the first report on the content of furfural and its derivatives in coffee products in China. The concentrations of furfural and its derivatives in 449 sampled, commercially available coffee products in China were analyzed through a GC-MS technique, and the associated health risks were estimated. As a result, 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) was identified as the predominant derivative compound, with the highest concentration of 6035.0 mg/kg and detection frequency of 98.7%. The mean dietary exposures of 5-HMF, 5-MF(5-methylfurfural), and 2-F(2-furfural) in coffee products among Chinese consumers were 55.65, 3.00, and 3.23 μg/kg bw/day, respectively. The ranges of mean dietary intake of furfural and its derivatives based on age groups were all lower than the acceptable daily intake (ADI) and the toxicological concern threshold (TTC). Risk evaluation results indicate that coffee product intake did not pose potential risks to consumers. Background: The gender gap remains a major impediment in the path towards equality and it is especially wide in low-income countries. Up to the early 2000s, many studies documented extensive inequalities in China: girls had poorer health, less nutrition and less education than their male counterparts. The goal of this study is to examine whether the gender gap persists, given that China is now making the transition into the ranks of upper-middle income countries. We consider educational outcomes, mental and physical health status, as well as non-cognitive outcomes. Methods: We draw on a dataset containing 69,565 observations constructed by combining data from 7 different school-level surveys spanning 5 provinces. The surveys were all conducted by the authors between 2008 and 2013 using uniform survey instruments and data collection protocols in randomly selected schools across western provinces in rural China. The sample children range in age from 9 to 14 years (with 79 % of the sample being aged 10 to 12). Our analysis compares rural girls with rural boys in terms of 13 different indicators. Results: With the exception of anemia rates, the health outcomes of girls are equal to those of boys. Girls and boys are statistically identical in terms of weight-for-age, height-for-age, and prevalence of intestinal worm infections. Girls performed better than boys on five of six cognitive and educational performance indicators. Girls performed worse than boys on all mental health indicators. All estimates are robust to the inclusion of different age ranges, controlling for the level of household assets, ethnic minority status, as well as the addition of provincial dummies. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that with the exception of non-cognitive outcomes, anemia and standardized math test scores, the gender gap in our study areas in China appears to be diminishing. Weight-related school bullying and victimization have become important public health issues among adolescents around the world. This study aims to examine gender differences in the effects of Body Mass Index (BMI) on school bullying and victimization among secondary school students. This study conducted a survey among 2849 adolescents—1393 girls (48.9%) and 1456 boys (51.1%). The students were between 12 and 18 years of age and were recruited from ten secondary schools in 2019 in Suqian City in China. The study showed that overweight boys were more likely to bully others and be bullied by peers compared to normal weight boys. In contrast, overweight girls reported less bullying than normal-weight girls. No significant relationship was found between overweight and victimization among female students. Cynomolgus macaques, the most commonly utilized nonhuman primate in nonclinical toxicology studies, are acquired from purpose-bred colonies across various geographic locations, including China, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Importation challenges and limited availability have restricted animals suitable for inclusion in nonclinical studies. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak further stressed supply chains, reducing the ability to source animals from a singular location to complete a drug development program. These challenges raised concerns of increased variability in study endpoints due to heterogeneity of animals and that this could subsequently impact historical control data and toxicology study interpretation. To investigate the impact of Chinese, Vietnamese, or Cambodian geographic origin on standard nonclinical toxicology study endpoints, historical control data from studies conducted at a single facility from 2005 to 2020 were compiled and evaluated for the following: clinical observations, body weight, ophthalmoscopic examinations, and clinical and anatomic pathology data. Study populations consisted of 2- to 5-year-old cynomolgus macaques sourced from China (n = 750 males/741 females), Cambodia (n = 282 males/271 females), and Vietnam (n = 122 males/120 females). Interpretation of the various data demonstrated no notable differences in standard toxicology study endpoints or background findings among cynomolgus macaques originating from China, Cambodia, or Vietnam. This is a randomized controlled study to determine whether diet and exercise interventions can reduce the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women with high-risk factors. Ninety-four pregnant women were randomly divided into the intervention (n = 47) and control (n = 47) groups. A diet and exercise program was provided for the intervention group by researchers and was adjusted every 2 weeks by outpatient or WeChat intervention. The control group only received the routine health management in the hospital. Follow-up continued until the birth of the baby. The incidence of GDM (23.9%) in the intervention group was lower than in the control group (51.1%) (p =.007). Weight gain did not differ significantly between the two groups throughout pregnancy (p =.572). Introduction: Previous studies exploring associations of physical inactivity, obesity, and out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) mainly used traditional linear regression, and little is known about the effect of both physical inactivity and obesity on OOPE across the percentile distribution. This study aims to assess the effects of physical inactivity and obesity on OOPE in China using a quantile regression approach. Methods: Study participants included 10,687 respondents aged 45 years and older from the recent wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2015. Linear regression and quantile regression models were used to examine the association of physical activity, body weight with annual OOPE. Results: Overall, the proportion of overweight and obesity was 33.2% and 5.8%, respectively. The proportion of individuals performing high-level, moderate-level, and low-level physical activity was 55.2%, 12.7%, and 32.1%, respectively. The effects of low-level physical activity on annual OOPE were small at the bottom quantiles but more pronounced at higher quantiles. Respondents with low-level activity had an increased annual OOPE of 26.9 USD, 150.3 USD, and 1,534.4 USD, at the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles, respectively, compared with those with high-level activity. The effects of overweight and obesity on OOPE were also small at the bottom quantiles but more pronounced at higher quantiles. Conclusion: Interventions that improve the lifestyles and unhealthy behaviors among people with obesity and physical inactivity are likely to yield substantial financial gains for the individual and health systems in China. Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is an important economic fish for aquaculture industry in China and Southeast Asian countries.The relationship between twelve morphological traits of P. argenteus were studied at different growth stages [60-, 90-, 120-, and 360-days post hatching (dph)] by usingcorrelation, path analyses, and multiple linear regression tools. The results showed that coefficient of variation of the body weight and trunk length traits remained stable and at a high level across all age groups (all above 20%), while other traits were the opposite. The body length and tail length traits had great direct effect on the body weight of P. argenteus at the first three growth stages (60, 90, and 120 dph). However, body length and body height traits had great direct effect in 360 dph, and the direct effect coefficient of caudal length was negative, indicating that the trait had a negative effect on body weight. Multiple linear regression analysis between morphological traits and body weight indicated that R2 was greater than 0.84 across all age groups (P < 0.05).The optimal multiple linear regression equations, as determined with stepwise regression, were constructed with morphological traits as independent variables and body weight as dependent variables.These results elucidated the linear relationship between the body weight and various main morphological traits of P. argenteus at different growth stages. In actual production, during mass selection of P. argenteus with body weight as the main objective, the recommended as auxiliary selection traits were the body length, body height, tail length, and caudal length traits. Purpose: To develop and validate a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model of valproic acid (VPA) in adult Chinese patients with bipolar disorder, and provide guidance for individualized therapy in this population. Methods: A total of 1104 serum concentrations from 272 patients were collected in this study. The data analysis was performed using a nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach. Covariates included demographic parameters, biological characteristics, and concomitant medications. Bootstrap validation (1000 runs), normalized prediction distribution error (NPDE), and external validation of 50 patients were employed to evaluate the final model. Results: A one-compartment model with first-order absorption and elimination was developed for VPA extended-release tablets. VPA clearance was significantly influenced by three variables: sex (12% higher in male patients), daily dose (increasing with the 0.13 exponent), and body weight (increasing with the 0.56 exponent). Typical values for the absorption rate constant (Ka), apparent clearance (CL/F), and apparent distribution volume (V/F) for a female patient weighing 70 kg administered VPA 1000 mg/day were 0.18 h−1, 0.46 L/h, and 12.84 L, respectively. The results of model evaluation indicated a good stable and precise performance of the final model. Conclusions: A qualified PPK model of VPA was developed in Chinese patients with bipolar disorder. Background: Global antiretroviral therapy has entered a new era. Integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) has become the first choice in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) treatment. Because INSTI has high antiviral efficacy, rapid virus inhibition, and good tolerance. However, INSTIs may increase the risk of obesity. Each INSTI has its unique impact on weight gain in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS. This study systematically assessed different INSTIs in causing significant weight gain in HIV/AIDS patients by integrating data from relevant literature.Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang databases were searched to find studies on the influence of different INSTIs in weight gain. Data on weight change were extracted, and a network meta-analysis was performed.Results: Eight studies reported weight changes in HIV/AIDS patients were included. Results of the network meta-analysis showed that the weight gain of HIV/AIDS patients treated with Dolutegravir (DTG) was significantly higher than that of Elvitegravir (EVG) [MD = 1.13, (0.18-2.07)]. The consistency test results showed no overall and local inconsistency, and no significant difference in the results of the direct and indirect comparison was detected (p > 0.05). The rank order of probability was DTG (79.2%) > Bictegravir (BIC) (77.9%) > Raltegravir (RAL) (33.2%) > EVG (9.7%), suggesting that DTG may be the INSTI drug that causes the most significant weight gain in HIV/AIDS patients.Conclusion: According to the data analysis, among the existing INSTIs, DTG may be the drug that causes the most significant weight gain in HIV/AIDS patients, followed by BIC. This study examined the age, growth, and maturation of 1,064 Coregonus ussuriensis individuals that were collected monthly from the middle section of the Amur River, China between 2016 and 2018. The fork length (FL) ranged from 14.9 to 49.1 cm for males and 21.5 to 58.8 cm for females, and the body weight (BW) ranged from 72.6 to 1,348.7 g for males and 107.9 to 2,854.9 g for females. The relationship of BW and FL was expressed as: BW? = 0.0324 × FL2.708; BW? = 0.014 × FL2.963. The sample ages ranged from 2 to 8 years for males and 2 to 9 years for females. We used the von Bertalanffy function based on otolith reading and observed FL data to simulate Coregonus ussuriensis growth, which has been suggested to be similar to that of other Salmonidae fishes. No significant difference in growth was determined between males and females. The monthly gonad somatic index (GSI) value ranged from 0.16% to 1.69% for males and from 0.73% to 16.15% for females, with a peak in November. Additionally, the reproductive staging suggested that the Coregonus ussuriensis spawning season was mainly in November and December. The size at maturity (FL50%) for males and females was 34.9 cm and 37.9 cm respectively, and the corresponding age (T50%) was 4.5 and 5.1, respectively. This study provides basic information for understanding the biological characteristics of Coregonus ussuriensis and should aid in the assessment and management of fishery resources. Introduction: Physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviors (SB), sleep, and diet are related to adiposity among children and adolescents. However, there may be interactions between PA, SB, sleep, and diet, and these lifestyle behaviors may work together to affect body weight. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of multiple lifestyle behaviors of PA, SB, sleep, and diet on childhood adiposity (body mass index z-score and overweight/obesity), and to investigate the effect of meeting multiple guidelines on adiposity among children and adolescents in China. Methods: Cross-sectional results were based on 28,048 children aged 6–17 years from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance in 2010–2012. Information about PA, SB, and sleep was measured through interview-administered questionnaire. Dietary intake was assessed with food frequency questionnaire. The associations between multiple lifestyle behaviors and BMI z-score and overweight/obese were examined. Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity in the participants was 19.2%. The average time of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), leisure SB, and sleep was 76.7 ± 45.5 min, 2.9 ± 1.4 h, and 8.5 ± 1.1 h per day, respectively. The China Dietary Guidelines Index for Youth (CDGI-Y) score was 62.6 ± 11.0. Sleep duration and diet score were negative associated with BMI z-score (both p < 0.001). MVPA and SB time were positive associated with BMI z-score (p = 0.041, 0.004). Meeting the SB, sleep, and diet guidelines had a lower BMI z-score (all p < 0.01) and lower odds of overweight/obesity (all p < 0.05). There were significant interactions between PA and diet. Compared with meeting no guidelines, those who met multiple guidelines had a lower risk of overweight/obesity (all p < 0.01). The more guidelines the participants met, the lower odds of overweight/obesity (p for trend <0.001). Conclusions: PA, SB, sleep, and diet are important behaviors associated with adiposity among children and adolescents. Attaining adequate amounts of appropriate multiple behaviors provided an additional benefit. It is important for children to meet recommended behavioral guidelines or recommendations. Data from 655 treatments of 116 studies were used in a meta‐analysis to determine the daily digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy (NE) intake of Chinese growing–finishing pigs, and to predict feed efficiency responses to change in dietary DE, ME and NE. Three alternative functions (i.e., polynomial, Bridges and asymptotic function) were employed for fitting daily DE, ME or NE intakes to mean body weight. The results showed that the three models from the current study provided reasonable fit (all R2 > 0.83) for the energy intake data. However, under the same energy system, the polynomial function had the smallest Akaike's information criteria (AIC) and residual standard deviation (RSD), followed by Bridges and asymptotic functions. The three model‐generated energy intakes of growing pigs were significantly less than that of the Chinese Feeding Standard of Swine, but similar to that of the National Research Council (2012), while the values of finishing pigs were greater than both standards. Compared with those that predict feed efficiency based on DE or ME, the equation with NE as a predictor had the minimized AIC and RSD. It was also found that feed efficiency increased with increasing dietary energy density (DED), but this response varied with pig body weight, and the lighter pigs were more sensitive to DED than heavier pigs. The current study examined the roles of weight-related teasing in the relationship between body weight (body mass index, BMI) and body dissatisfaction in boys and girls. Participants were 711 adolescents recruited from secondary schools in China. They completed self-report questionnaires designed to assess weight-related teasing and body dissatisfaction. Participants' BMIs were derived from their measured weights and heights. Weight-related teasing was found to play two roles in the relationship between body weight and body dissatisfaction. Specifically, weight-related teasing mediated the path from BMI to body dissatisfaction partially in girls and fully in boys. Weight-related teasing had a moderating effect on the relationship between BMI and body dissatisfaction in girls; this moderating effect was not significant in boys. Adolescents with higher BMIs tend to have higher levels of body dissatisfaction, and this association may be mediated and moderated by weight-related teasing. Abstract: The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, overwinters in China as a larva in facultative diapause. The instars and body weights of overwintering larvae vary widely. In this paper, the relationships between body weight and supercooling capacity, diapause intensity and post-diapause reproductive potential of overwintering larvae collected in late-stage rice field were examined. There was a significant positive correlation between body weight, instar, and head capsule width, thus the overwintering larvae were divided into five groups based on body weight (I, up to 35.0mg; II, 35.1–57.0mg; III, 57.1–79.0mg; IV, 79.1–101.0mg; and V, over 101.1mg) for further analysis. The body water content of the lighter group (I) was significantly higher than that of the heavier groups (IV–V). However, the mean supercooling point decreased with an increase of the mean larval body weight in five groups; mean supercooling point of group I was significantly lower than that of group V, except in January 2009. After transfer of overwintering larvae to 15, 20 and 25°C on different dates, smaller individuals pupated slightly faster than larger ones at the same temperature, suggesting that diapause was less intense in smaller overwintering larvae. On 19 March 2009 there was a strong positive correlation between larval body weight and the weight of 3 day-old pupae, and the number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females at 15, 20 and 25°C. The average number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females differed significantly among different groups. The average number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females in group V was significantly greater than those of other groups, and that of group I was significantly lower than those of other groups, suggesting that post-diapause reproductive potential was determined, to a certain extent, by body weight of the overwintering larvae. Background: Weight comments are commonly received by adolescents, but the accuracy of the comments and their effects on weight misperception are unclear. We assessed the prevalence and accuracy of weight comments received by Chinese adolescents from different sources and their relation to weight misperception. Methods: In the Hong Kong Student Obesity Surveillance (HKSOS) project 2006-07, 22612 students aged 11-18 (41.5% boys) completed a questionnaire on obesity. Students responded if family members, peers and professionals had seriously commented over the past 30 days that they were "too fat" or "too thin" in two separate questions. The accuracy of the comments was judged against the actual weight status derived from self-reported height and weight. Self-perceived weight status was also reported and any discordance with the actual weight status denoted weight misperception. Logistic regression yielded adjusted odd ratios for weight misperception by the type of weight comments received. Results: One in three students received weight comments, and the mother was the most common source of weight comments. Health professional was the most accurate source of weight comments, yet less than half the comments were correct. Adolescents receiving incorrect comments had increased risk of having weight misperception in all weight status groups. Receiving conflicting comments was positively associated with weight misperception among normal weight adolescents. In contrast, underweight and overweight/obese adolescents receiving correct weight comments were less likely to have weight misperception. Conclusion: Weight comments, mostly incorrect, were commonly received by Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong, and such incorrect comments were associated with weight misperception. Background: The purpose of this paper was to report the prevalence of overweight/obesity by area, age, and gender in the year 2000 and to explore at what age adiposity rebound as measured by BMI occurs for Chinese children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 262,738 children aged 3.5–6.4 years in 26 counties/cities in China. Weight and height were measured from March 2000 through July 2000 by local trained health workers. International age- and gender-specific BMI cut-off points were used to obtain comparable prevalence rates of overweight/obesity. Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) of being overweight/obesity for different comparisons. Results: There were 19,390 overweight (16,738) or obese (2,652) children, resulting in an overall prevalence rate of 7.4% (95% CI: 7.3–7.5%). Girls were more likely to be overweight or obese than boys (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.11–1.17). Compared with children living in the southern urban area, multivariate ORs for those living in northern rural and southern rural areas were 2.58 and 1.15, respectively. Compared with children aged 6.0–6.4 years old, multivariate ORs for children aged 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5 years were 1.96, 1.88, 1.56, 1.53, and 1.11, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusions: Childhood overweight/obesity in Chinese children in 2000 is similar to the conditions of Great Britain or the U.S. in the 1980s or earlier. New Zealand White rabbits (NN) are known as broiler rabbits that are well adapted to the Indonesian environment. HyLa rabbits are rabbits imported from China that were selected for high reproduction and growth rates. The increased productivity of NN rabbits was achieved by crossing to HyLa rabbits. This study was aimed to evaluate HyLa and NN rabbits' productivity and their reciprocal crosses to develop a broiler rabbit adaptive to tropical climate. Forty heads of does and 20 heads of bucks of HyLa rabbit, 30 heads of does, and 6 heads of bucks of New Zealand White rabbits (NN) were used. Reproductive performance of does (litter size at birth, litter size at weaning, mortality, and weekly does body weight) and the kit's growth performance (weekly body weight from weaning until the age of 20 weeks) was evaluated. Data were analyzed using the SAS program, FactoMineR, and factoextra package in R 4.0.0. Rabbit's growth data were periodically analyzed by the Gompertz model. At the age of 10 weeks, HyLa had a body weight of 1459.7 ± 373.1 g greater than HyLa x NN (1380.1 ± 389.9 g), NN x HyLa (1225.7 ± 263.4 g), and NN (985.0 ± 234.4 g). Based on the Gompertz model, NN x HyLa had an inflection point at a weight of 1,977.7 at 12 weeks. Furthermore, NN x HyLa had a better litter size than HyLa x NN. Background: This study focused on comparing the applicability and efficacy of the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards and the China growth charts in diagnosing malnutrition and indicating nutritional interventions in preterm infants. Methods: Six hundred and eighty‐three preterm infants were involved and their anthropometric data were collected. The proportion of weight and head circumference less than the 10th percentile (P10), weight less than the 25th percentile (P25), and weight for length greater than the 90th percentile (P90) identified by the WHO growth standards and the China growth charts were compared. Results: At corrected age (CA) 1 ~< 2 months (m), the proportion of head circumference P90 assessed by the WHO growth standards was greater than that assessed by the China growth charts. Conclusions: Compared with the China growth charts, the WHO growth standards can further reduce the number of diagnoses of abnormal physical growth, are more helpful in avoiding overnutrition interventions, and are more sensitive in the early detection of delayed head circumference growth. In mid‐May, 2019, the fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda invaded Jiangxi Province, China, and caused extensive damage to corn crops. However, little attention has been given to the life‐history traits of the FAW. In the present study, we systematically investigated the life‐history traits of the newly invasive FAW on corn leaves at 19, 22, 25, 28, and 31°C under a photoperiod of LD 15:9 hr. The FAW thrived on the corn leaves with short developmental periods, high survival rates of larvae and pupae, very high mating success rates, and high fecundity. The pupal developmental stage was significantly longer in males than females at all temperatures, thus resulting in a protogyny phenomenon. The pupal weight was heaviest after a relatively shorter larval development stage at a higher temperature (25°C); thus, the FAW did not follow the temperature–size rule. Females were smaller than males, indicating sexual size dimorphism. A small proportion of females delayed their pre‐oviposition period and began to lay eggs on the 7th to 9th day after adult emergence. There were positive relationships between pupal weight and larval developmental time and between adult weight and fecundity. There was a negative relationship between fecundity and longevity. These findings can help us to predict the population dynamics of the FAW on corn and to develop a suitable and practical management strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: An area threshold is usually considered as the point of abrupt change in the species–area relationship (SAR). Despite their widespread existence, few studies have considered the influence of data transformations on their presence or the mechanisms that generate them. The aims of this study were thus to test for the existence of an area threshold in butterfly assemblages and to compare trait–environment associations between small and large islands split by the threshold. Location: Zhoushan Archipelago, China. Taxon: Butterflies. Methods: We used the line‐transect method to survey butterflies on 42 islands from July to August 2014. We also collected data on three commonly used ecological traits of butterflies (wingspan, wing loading and body weight). We transformed the butterfly datasets into three types (log‐log, semi‐log and untransformed) and fitted each of them using a set of breakpoint regression models. We then split all islands into small and large islands based on the area threshold and analysed the trait–environment associations for each island group. Results: Two‐slope breakpoint models performed best for log‐log and semi‐log transformed datasets. However, the former exhibited a steep‐shallow shape with an area threshold of 0.820 km2 and the latter was in shallow‐steep shape with a threshold of 17.022 km2. By contrast, no threshold was detected when using the untransformed power model. Moreover, for small islands, small area and large isolation were positively correlated with species with large wing loading and body weight. For large islands, however, the perimeter to area ratio (PAR) was significantly and positively related to wing loading. Main conclusions: We found that data transformations may influence the detection of area thresholds. Trait–environment analyses can further provide novel and mechanistic insights into processes generating area thresholds. Background: Early postanal growth of preterm infants has many effects on early and late health. However, evidence on growth pattern in Chinese preterm infant population during early life is insufficient. This study aims to describe the growth trajectory, catch-up growth, and risk of overweight of preterm infants during the first 2 years of life in a Chinese community population. Methods: All preterm infants (n = 10,624) received routine childcare in one primary maternal and child healthcare network in 8 years were included. Body weight and length/height at corrected age (CA) 40 weeks, CA 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months were extracted and converted to z-scores based on the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. According to the intrauterine growth status, infants were divided into small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and large for gestational age (LGA) infants. Changes of z-score were used to describe the growth velocity. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was used to analyze growth trajectory trends over time. Results: Body weight and length/height were overall above the WHO standards during the first 2 years of life. Z-score increased significantly by 0.08 (95% CI: 0.06–0.10) in weight and 0.07 (95% CI: 0.04–0.09) in length/height from CA 40 weeks to 3 months and then levelled off until CA 24 months after adjustment. Almost 90% of AGA and LGA infants achieved growth targets (≥25th percentile of WHO standards), and over 85% of SGA infants achieved catch-up growth (≥10th percentile of WHO standards) before CA 24 months. However, the risk of overweight appeared during this period, with the proportion of infants with the risk of overweight being at the peak at CA 3 months (25.6% of all preterm infants and 39.4% of LGA infants). Growth trajectories of SGA showed increasing trends, but those of LGA showed decreasing trends during the first 2 years. Conclusions: Body weight and length/height of preterm infants are above the WHO standards in the Chinese community population during the first 2 years of life. Pasteurella multocida can invade and translocate through endothelial cells and result in vascular-system infection, which can cause severe economic losses in the poultry industry. Antibacterial therapy (especially florfenicol) plays an important part in controlling P. multocida infection. To preserve the effect of florfenicol, in vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling of florfenicol against three P. multocida strains in duck was established. Then, the efficacy of the currently marketed dose, a rational dosage regimen for populations, and the PK/PD cutoff were predicted through Monte Carlo simulations (MCSs). The area under the concentration–time curve from 0 to 24 h/minimum inhibitory concentration (AUC0–24 h /MIC) was the optimal PK/PD parameter. The PK/PD surrogate values of florfenicol against P. multocida were similar using different organs as the PD target, but varied in different strains. For the florfenicol-sensitive strain 0825Y1, when the AUC0–24 h /MIC reached 117.54 and 108.19, florfenicol showed a bactericidal effect in the liver and lung, respectively. For the florfenicol-sensitive strain 0901J1, the corresponding value was 78.39 and 54.30, respectively. For the florfenicol-resistant strain JY160110, florfenicol could attain a maximum effect of 1 – log10 reduction in bacteria in the liver and lung when the AUC0–24 h /MIC reached 2.03 and 2.06, respectively. The PK/PD-based prediction for the population dose indicated a poor effect for the low end of the currently marketed dose (40 mg/kg body weight per day), but a robust effect for the high end of the currently marketed dose (60 mg/kg body weight per day) with a target attainment rate of 92.79% and 81.44% against P. multocida in mainland China and worldwide, respectively. The recommended dose optimized by MCSs was 52 mg/kg body weight in mainland China. The PK/PD cutoff of florfenicol against P. multocida at the low end and high end of the current daily dose (40 and 60 mg/kg body weight) and predicted daily dose in mainland China (52 mg/kg body weight) was 0.25, 4, and 0.5 μg/ml, respectively. These results suggested that more than one strain should be involved for PK/PD modeling and contributed to rational use of florfenicol in populations. Background: Studies analyzing the association between parity and normal-weight metabolic syndrome (MetS) in postmenopausal women of normal weight remain limited, this study aimed to explore the association between parity and MetS among Chinese normal-weight postmenopausal women. Methods: In total, 776 normal-weight undiagnosed type 2 diabetes postmenopausal women who visited the Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University for a routine health check-up between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2019 were included in the cross-sectional study. All individuals had fully completed information records encompassing standardized electronic medical records, physical examinations, and biochemical measurements. Metabolic health was defined as fewer than 2 parameters of the MetS were present, in combination with normal weight. Continuous variables which were normally distributed were expressed as means and standard deviation. Comparisons among normally distributed continuous variables were made using one-way ANOVA while that among non-normal distribution parameters were made using Kruskal-Wallis. The association between parity and MetS was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. All of the analyses were performed with SPSS statistical software (Version 23.0, SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and the statistical software package EmpowerStats (http://www.empowerstats.com, X&Y Solutions, Inc., Boston, MA). Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors including hip circumference, parity was failed to show a significantly relationship with MetS in normal-weight women(P=0.054). Women with a higher parity (≥3) had an increased OR of abdominal obesity, while the OR (95% CI) of the parity 3 group was 2.06 (1.13, 3.77) and that of the parity ≥4 group was 3.08(1.42, 6.66) the P for trend was 0.002 after adjusting for potential confounding factors. No significant differences were detected for other metabolic disorders including high levels of triglycerides (TG), blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in different parity groups. Conclusions: Higher parity was not associated with a higher risk of MetS in normal weight Chinese postmenopausal women.
