Belonging is a human need, one that is particularly difficult for children of immigrants to achieve. The Second-generation youth hangs in a balance between the culture of their parents and that of their friends and peers. Often these youth feel that they are not heard or seen by those around them, enhancing the feeling of not belonging in their communities, or even in their country. Therapeutic interventions could potentially create a "third space" in which they feel a sense of belonging. This paper explores the complexity in the experience of belonging in second-generation Latinx youth through a review of the literature, psychodynamic theories, a composite clinical case example and the reflections and implications to and from Second-generation Latina therapist. This paper explores the attitudes and behaviors of Texas citizens in response to the circumstances existing during and shortly after the Arab countries' oil embargo of Spring 1974. The focus is on the credibility of defining the situation in terms of incipient long-term energy shortages and on the adoption of energy conservation practices. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the relationships between the attitudes which people held about the energy situation and their efforts to conserve energy. The authors found that most of those surveyed did not interpret energy shortages as simply a result of the Arab countries' oil embargo. Even fewer interpreted the events of the spring of 1974 as the advent of a serious energy crisis for the U.S. Skepticism about the reality of the crisis seemed linked to distrust of energy' producing corporations and leadership in the national government. The findings suggest that differences in energy conserving behavior were dependent on differences in the degree to which the energy crisis was credible and on differences in socioeconomic status. Many of those who could afford to pay the costs of higher priced energy continued their consumption patterns pretty much as before the period of shortages.

State officials responsible for the regulation of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations used in the production of oil and gas resources will inevitably confront a key policy issue; that is, to what extent can statewide regulations be developed without reducing land use autonomy typically exercised by local officials? Most state regulators have historically recognized the economic importance of industry jobs and favor the adoption of uniform regulatory requirements even if these rules preempt local policymaking authority. Conversely, many local officials seek to preserve land use autonomy to provide a greater measure of protection for public health and environmental quality goals. This paper examines how public officials in three states--Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Texas--address the question of state control versus local autonomy through their efforts to shape fracking policy decisions. While local officials within Texas have succeeded in developing fracking ordinances with relatively little interference from state regulators, Colorado and Pennsylvania have adopted a tougher policy stance favoring the retention of preemptive oil and gas statutes. Key factors that account for between state differences in fracking policy decisions include the strength of home rule provisions, gubernatorial involvement, and the degree of local experience with industrial economic activities. The principal question to be examined herein is, "What attitudes do people have toward questionnaires and the interviewing process"? A secondary problem is, "Do people have any stereotyped impressions of the role of the interviewer?" Finally, "Do divergent social groups within a community respond differently with regard to these matters?" For the purpose of seeking out suggestive answers to the foregoing questions two census tracts in the city of Austin, Texas, were surveyed by members of the writer's class on research methods. The tracts were chosen with a view to certain socio-economic differences. One had the highest median income and, aside from the university residential area, ranked first in median years of school completed. The other was one of the lowest in terms of education and had a relatively low income according to the 1950 Census. It was selected over still lower socio-economic tracts because its composition was predominantly "Anglo-American" rather than "Latin-American" or Negro; the ethnic variable was therefore minimized.

Background: Parental preference for various behaviour management techniques (BMTs) used in paediatric dentistry has been shown to be influenced by many factors, including ethnicity. Aim: To measure parental acceptability of BMTs used in paediatric dentistry and how it is influenced by ethnicity and language. Design: Parents of patients presenting to a paediatric dentistry residency clinic in Houston, Texas, USA or Medellín, Colombia watched ten video BMT vignettes and rated their acceptance on a visual analog scale (VAS). Participants were categorized into six groups based on language, ethnicity, and country of residence. Results: Parental acceptance of BMTs was affected by language, ethnicity, and country of residence (P = 2.2 × 10−16). Ethnic groups in the USA had a mean overall acceptance rate of all BMTs. Colombians rated all BMTs less acceptable than the US cohorts (P < 0.05), with the exception of voice control, which Colombians rate less acceptable than English‐speaking Caucasians and Spanish‐speaking Hispanics in the USA (P < 0.05). The Colombian population were not accepting of conscious sedation, nitrous oxide, general anaesthesia, and protective stabilization. Conclusions: Parents from different ethnic groups express different preferences in BMTs. Parents continue to prefer noninvasive techniques over pharmacologic and advanced techniques, with the exception of voice control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Specialized groups of public relations practitioners, such as lobbyists, have gone unstudied in extant public relations role research. This study takes an alternative methodological approach in this important research line by delving into the human aspect of public relations practice from an interpretive perspective rather than a functionalistic one. This study attempts to put a human face back on public relations practitioners by exploring what motivates them. Thirty-seven former and current lobbyists based in Austin, Texas, were interviewed. Fantasy themes embedded in the homo narrans, or stories, that lobbyists recounted about their jobs compose the data analyzed. Burke's 7 offices of human motivation supply the interpretive framework. How this interpretation dovetails into and informs classic research on practitioner role models also is examined. Lobbyists seem to enact all 5 of the Broom and Smith original role models while they are particularly inspired to serve and to teach their clients in the public policy-making process. Fundamentally, lobbyists personify both manager and technician and embody all 7 motivational dynamics in their public relations practitioner role performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on findings of the study related to attitudes of college men toward the social issue of non-segregation in schools of Texas. The study was conducted upon a random sample of undergraduate men at the University of Texas and used a specially devised Tolerance of Non-Segregation Scale for the study. The analysis was done using tolerance of non-segregation as functions of geographical region, church affiliation, field of study and year in college. It also correlated racial attitudes and church attendance; tolerance of non-segregation and personal concept of God. It is found that among college students the most tolerant individuals are those who have rebelled against traditional cultural mores. The issue of abolishing segregation was more likely favored by an individual who deviated from the dominant mores of culture than the one who conformed to the traditional values of his family and community. More likely than not, the student who was not a member of a social fraternity, who did not hold orthodox views concerning the nature of God, who never attended church, or who had already worked or studied under non-segregated conditions, was highly tolerant of the Negro.
