Objective The aim of the present work was to examine adult smokers' awareness of and receptivity to an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) television advert, and whether viewing the advert influenced urge to smoke and intention to try ENDS. Methods A television advert for ENDS brand blu eCigs was shown to an online convenience sample of 519 Florida adult smokers. We measured current smokers' awareness of and receptivity to the advert, and whether seeing the advert influenced their thoughts about smoking or quitting, urge to smoke and intention to try ENDS. Results were stratified by prior ENDS use. Results Approximately 62.3% of current smokers were aware of the advert. Smokers found the advert informative (73.8%), attention grabbing (67.5%) and innovative (64.5%), with prior ENDS users rating the advert more favourably than non-users. Seeing the advert elicited an urge to smoke (mean 42.1, SD=1.9) and thoughts about smoking cigarettes (75.8%) as well as quitting (74.6%). Prior END users were significantly more likely than non-users to report thinking about smoking cigarettes after seeing the advert (P<0.05). Most smokers said ENDS were ‘made for people like them' (88.6%) and they would try ENDS in the future (66.0%). Conclusions Smokers are receptive to ENDS television adverts and report intention to try ENDS after viewing the advert. Future studies should monitor ENDS advertising and examine how exposure to ENDS adverts influences smokers' use of ENDS, dual use with cigarettes and cessation behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a content analysis of political flyers and messages developed by Religious Right campaigns between 1974 and 2013 to fight legislation supportive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. The analysis focuses on 16 campaigns in which Religious Right groups made claims about transgender adults and children. In these messages (n = 60), transgender children are presented as similar to adults; campaigns frame these children as immutably gendered, confused, and sexually predatory. This research advances the body of literature on the adultification of minority children. I argue that transgender girls are adultified and sexualized rather than framed as innocent or imperiled, which perpetuates cisgender domination of transgender people.

Introduction: Technology has transformed our lifestyles in dramatic and significant ways, including new and less expensive options for recruiting study participants. This study examines cost and participant differences between two recruitment sources, Craigslist (CL), and print newspapers (PNs). This paper also reviewed and compared studies involving clinical trials published since 2010 that recruited participants using CL alone or in combination with other methods., Method: Secondary data analyses from a parent study involving a randomized controlled trial of a mail-based intervention to promote self-change with problem drinkers., Results: Significant differences were found between CL and PN participants on most demographic and pretreatment drinking variables. While all participants had AUDIT scores suggestive of an alcohol problem and reported drinking at high-risk levels, CL participants had less severe drinking problem histories, were considerably younger, and had a higher socioeconomic status than PN participants. The total advertising costs for the 65 CL ads ($275) were significantly less than the 69 PN ads ($33, 311). The recruiting cost per eligible participant was vastly less expensive using CL ($1.46) compared to print newspaper ads ($116.88)., Conclusions: Using CL is a viable recruitment method for soliciting participants, particularly those that are younger, for alcohol intervention studies. It is also less expensive than newspaper ads. When CL participants were recruited, they reported being slightly more confident to change their drinking than PN participants. Limitations of using CL are discussed, including that some initial ad responders gave inconsistent answers to similar questions and a few tried to enter the study more than once., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: Numerous studies have examined the relationship between antitobacco mass-media campaigns and quit attempts. However, less is known about the effect of these campaigns on relapse. This paper evaluates the effect of media exposure on smokers' quit attempts and relapse., Methods: We used data from the Florida Adult Cohort Survey, a telephone follow-up survey of adult smokers and recent quitters, who completed the Florida Adult Tobacco Survey. For this study, 1823 unique smokers and recent quitters from baseline first observed between July 2008 and October 2012 were surveyed through up to seven follow-up interviews between October 2009 and October 2013. Media exposure during this period primarily represents exposure to Florida's Tobacco Free Florida (TFF) campaign, although it also includes exposure to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Tips From Former Smokers media campaign in 2012-2013. A multiple-spell discrete-time survival model was estimated using logistic regression. Each spell represents a quit attempt or relapse event., Results: The odds of the first observed quit attempt are higher at higher levels of target rating points (TRPs) (aOR=1.02, p=0.023). The odds ratio for relapse and second quit and second relapse was not statistically significant., Conclusions: The results suggest that exposure to media campaign messages in Florida has led to increases in quit attempts. Although the estimates were not statistically significant for relapse or the second spell of quit attempts or relapse, the results suggest that media messages might also influence subsequent quit attempts or relapses after an initial quit attempt., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Background Acute Respiratory tract infections (ARI) are infections involving the upper respiratory tract. Most ARIs are viral in nature and self-limited in which most of the times antibiotic treatment is unnecessary. A recent VA medication utilization evaluation conducted in 28 medical centers identified high rates of unnecessary antibiotic prescribing for ARI. Based on these analyses the VA National Academic Detailing Service (VANADS) created the ARI campaign, providing materials for VA systems to employ as the seek to improve ARI management. Our project consists of implementation of the ARI Campaign in a South Florida Veteran Affairs HealthCare System (Miami VAHS). Methods We utilized VANADS resources for our campaign. Activities included assessing ARI prescribing patterns, garnering stakeholder support, identifying pharmacist and physician champions, providing targeted academic detailing, handing out provider ARI guidance documents (in paper and electronically), disseminating provider-specific feedback with peer comparison, order-set development with advertisement, promoting appropriate coding, and reporting to the Miami VAHS antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) subcommittee. Campaign activities were initiated in October 2017. The ARI Campaign was selected as the priority item for FY-2019, from our annual ASP risk assessment with a goal of reducing antibiotic prescribing for ARI diagnosis to below 40%. We present the data up to March 2019. Results Baseline data from October 2015 through September 2017 revealed an antibiotic was prescribed to 1,651 of 2,843 (58%) encounters in which an ARI diagnosis was made in our system. In the months following ARI Campaign initiation, a decline in antibiotic prescribing for ARI diagnosis was found. In the most recent quarter (January–March 2019), the prescribing rate was 39%. Figure 1 shows system-wide vs. Florida region prescribing rates. Table 1 provides data by major site and for the top 10 priority providers we identified. Conclusion Implementation of a multifaceted ARI Campaign at a single-center resulted in a substantial reduction in antibiotic prescriptions. Generic advertising is commonly used to market agricultural products by groups of producers to increase the overall demand. With the popularity of social media, a cheaper and convenient alternative platform has been created for generic advertising. Despite social media advertising gaining success in some areas, little is known about whether this success can be duplicated to agricultural products. Questions also remain about potential benefits to producers when multiple organizations conduct generic advertising for the same or similar products. This study investigates the own and spillover effect of duo‐regional generic advertising of two grower organizations' (Florida and California) social media on consumer preference for fresh produce with different origins. Overall, a significant increase in willingness‐to‐pay is found for the products being promoted by social media, indicating a strong own effect of duo‐regional generic advertising. A substantial spillover effect of generic advertising is also found for social media conducted by California and Florida on domestic and imported products, correspondingly. Mexico receives a free‐rider benefit from the generic advertising provided by Florida social media. The results shed light on the industries that try to promote food products using social media and inform policy decisions on how to utilize generic advertising better to expand the market. Background: Given the unique social nature of waterpipe smoking, an important factor contributing to its popularity is the spread of waterpipe establishments. Objectives: With a focus on implications for regulations, we conducted a qualitative assessment of customers' online reviews on Yelp.com to gain insight into their positive and negative perceptions about waterpipe establishments and products, and identify features that are most important to them. Methods: In June 2016, an online search of Yelp was conducted to identify waterpipe establishments in Miami, Florida. First, we collected information from the websites on establishments' characteristics and their marketing practices. Then we selected customers' waterpipe-related reviews and used an inductive qualitative method to code and identify key themes associated with positive and negative customers' experiences. Thematic analysis was completed upon reaching saturation. The final coding scheme consisted of 32 codes within eight themes. Results: The homepage of the establishment was used to promote special discounts and events, while the online waterpipe menu was used to promote the waterpipe products. Our thematic analysis indicated that the variety of flavored tobacco was the most rated positive factor to customers, while the low-quality charcoal and high price were the most negative factors. Conclusions/Importance: Waterpipe online advertisements and promotions should be monitored and restricted. The availability of flavored tobacco, innovative device/accessories, affordable pricing, and charcoal quality are important domains for waterpipe establishments policy/regulation. Regulatory framework for waterpipe establishments should address the complex context of waterpipe including the venue (i.e., physical, website, menu), the tobacco, the device/accessories, and charcoal. This article examines a new electronic mail account established by the Tampa Campus Library at the University of South Florida, as of April 1998. Telephone reference was the model for the new service, that is, the library attempted to provide basic information and referrals as needed. Limiting the service to university students, faculty and staff was considered, but instead the university decided to take its chances because part of its mission is to provide service to the community. To reach the widest possible audience, the university decided to advertise the service on its local system, re-advertise the service in the campus newspaper and advertise the service on the homepage of the library among others.
