Little research has been conducted to determine the thermal properties and phenomena of graphane and fluorographene. A clear understanding of the thermal problems involved is needed, which may provide a basis for further research on other material properties. In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the thermal properties of graphane and fluorographene and especially the phenomena involved, including thermal fluctuations and bending rigidities. Furthermore, comparisons of thermal properties and the phenomena involved were made computationally between pristine and functionalised graphene. The thermal fluctuations and bending rigidities were determined at different temperatures. The present study aims to provide a clear understanding of the thermal problems involved in hydrogenated and fluorinated graphene. The results indicated that while thermally excited ripples spontaneously appear in graphene, fully hydrogenated or fluorinated graphene is substantially unrippled due to their very high bending rigidities. There is no significant effect of thermal rippling throughout graphane and fluorographene due to their very high bending rigidities. However, partially hydrogenated or fluorinated graphene exhibits strong thermal fluctuations. Graphene behaves differently from graphane and fluorographene with regard to the dependence of bending rigidity on temperature. Furthermore, significant out-of-plane fluctuations may occur in partially fluorinated graphene. Thermal fluctuations of graphene are more sensitive to temperature than those of graphane and fluorographene.

In spite of significant efforts to investigate the ability of hydrogenated and fluorinated graphene to conduct heat, little research has focused particularly upon their other thermal properties, such as thermal contraction and heat capacity, which have implications for the development of thermal nanotechnology. In an attempt to determine these thermal properties, a few experiments have been carried out, with rather conflicting results. In the present study, calculations were performed using molecular dynamics to investigate the thermal properties of graphane and fluorographene and especially the phenomena involved. The thermal expansion coefficients and heat capacities of the two-dimensional materials were determined at different temperatures. The results indicated that graphane is thermally contracted more significantly than graphene. The calculated molar heat capacity at constant volume is about 25.00 J/(mol·K) for graphene and about 29.26 J/(mol·K) for graphane. The specific heat capacity of fluorographene is always lower than that of graphane. A negative relationship does exist between the binding energy and the temperature.

The high production cost and extremely weak mechanical properties of SiO 2 aerogels have been two major challenges hindering its widespread application. Atmospheric pressure drying (APD) has always been regarded as the optimal process to reduce costs. However, traditional APD is cumbersome, still uses a large amount of expensive raw materials, and is extremely immature. In this study, a novel APD was developed, inspired by the wing changes during adult damselfly process. Inorganic silica source/water was used as the raw material, and CO 2 was used instead of low surface tension solvent to stabilize the aerogel skeleton structure in situ, and ultimately aerogel material was obtained. The thermal conductivity of pure aerogels was as low as 0.0264 W/(m·K), the porosity reached 94.7 %, and the preparation cycle was only 28.5 h. The thermal stability of the skeleton structure and the chemical stability of surface were investigated and showed the hydrophobicity to withstand temperatures up to 400 °C. Aerogel composites feature low thermal conductivity of 0.0283 W/(m·K), and prominent thermal insulation properties over a wide temperature range of 50–300 °C. For traditional APD, this method shortens preparation cycle by 1–6 times. Compared with the commercial aerogel, the cost is reduced by 38.2 %, and the process is simple and environmentally friendly under the premise of ensuring excellent performance. Dy3+, Eu3+ co-doped glass ceramics (GCs) containing SrMoO 4 crystalline phase were prepared by melt-curing-crystallization method. The most favorable heat treatment conditions for the glass ceramics were found to be 610 °C/2 h by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV–Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The best doping concentrations of Dy3+ and Eu3+ in this glass ceramic were 0.8 % and 0.6 %, concentration quenching caused by dipole-dipole interactions occurs when the content of rare earth ions in GCs continues to increase. The chromaticity coordinates of the Dy3+- Eu3+ co-doped glass ceramics changed from cool white light to warm white light with the addition of Eu3+ concentration. At the optimal doping concentration (0.8 % Dy3+-0.6 % Eu3+), the chromaticity coordinate of glass ceramics is (0.3972, 0.3331), and the related color temperature is 3047 K. The luminescence intensity can still reach about 80 % of room temperature at 180 °C, and its thermal quenching activation energy is 0.233 eV. This suggests that glass ceramics have excellent thermal stability. After adding an appropriate amount of Li+, the crystalline phase of the glass ceramics remained unchanged and the luminous intensity of the glass ceramics increased by a factor of about 1.4 in the same environment. The thermal quenching activation energy of the glass ceramic doped with 0.2 % Li+-0.8 % Dy3+-0.6 % Eu3+ was 0.344 eV. This study describes the preparation of bimodal reinforced Cu/Ti 3 SiC 2 /C laminated-like composites using flake powder metallurgy and vacuum hot-press sintering process. The objective was to accurately modulate the formation of oriented reinforcement network in two-dimensional carbon materials. The powders used in the five designed composites were flake Cu powder (45–60 μm), Ti 3 SiC 2 (1–5 μm), graphite flakes (GFs, 120 μm) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs, 15 μm). Among them, the proportions of Ti 3 SiC 2 (10 wt %) and GFs (3 wt %) remained unchanged, GNPs accounted for 0 wt %, 0.5 wt %, 1.0 wt %, and 1.5 wt %, and Cu powder accounted for a decreasing proportion. Formation mechanisms of GFs and GNPs in oriented networks were quantitatively analyzed using the alignment model. Additionally, the related strengthening and failure mechanisms were investigated. According to the study, the bimodal laminated-like Cu/Ti 3 SiC 2 /C composites with 0.5 wt% GNPs added showed the best overall performance. Specifically, it exhibited a hardness of 125.7 HV, tensile strength of 276.3 MPa, thermal conductivity of 207.8 W m−1 K−1, and electrical conductivity of 23.6 MS/m. The network enhanced by the two-dimensional carbon material achieves efficient and orderly load transfer and dissipation mechanisms, optimizing stress distribution and enhancing fracture resistance, resulting in improved mechanical properties. In addition, the formation of the oriented reinforcement network optimizes the orientation arrangement of the reinforcing particles, which somewhat mitigates the scattering of thermoelectric carriers by structural defects in the composites, and the enlarged mean free-range improves the migration efficiency of electrons and phonons. Strontium titanate nanoparticles (SrTiO 3 NPs) were produced via the solid-state reaction method. Then, they were used to enhance the structural, mechanical, electrical, and dielectric properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) blend for energy storage applications. For this purpose, SrTiO 3 NPs were dispersed in the polymer blend to fabricate nanocomposite films using a solution casting method. The nanocomposite films were then characterized using a variety of instruments, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet/Visible spectroscopy (UV/visible), and impedance analyzers. Based on XRD and TEM measurements, the synthesized SrTiO 3 NPs have a cubic perovskite phase and a diameter that varies between 70 and 160 nm. Additionally, according to XRD measurements, adding SrTiO 3 NPs to PVA/PEO reduces the crystallinity of the resulting nanocomposites. In addition, the surface morphology and elemental composition were demonstrated through the utilization of scanning electron microscope. (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis (EDX) spectra, where PVA and PEO polymers formed a homogenous and rough surface, and the SrTiO 3 NPs of low concentrations were spread out within the blend's structure. Analysis of the FTIR peaks revealed prominent characteristic peaks associated with vibrational groups that change randomly with the concentration of SrTiO 3 NPs. With increasing SrTiO 3 NPs concentration, the nanocomposite UV/visible absorbance, optical bandgap energies, and refractive index were calculated and discussed. Impedance studies conclude that the amount of SrTiO 3 NPs in a mixture raises the mixture's AC electrical conductivity, dielectric loss, and dielectric constant. The mechanical characteristics, such as Young's modulus, yield strength, and strain at failure, were assessed by examining the tensile test of prepared films. The thermal stability of PVA/PEO-SrTiO 3 nanocomposite films were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). During the machining of Inconel 718 using SiAlON ceramics, the tool life can be significantly influenced by diffusion wear. To investigate this crucial wear behavior, this study focuses on the thermochemical interactions in the diffusion couple between SiAlON ceramics and Inconel 718 superalloy. So, we examine the microstructural characteristics and phase formation behavior in the reacted layer between these two materials. The interfaces between these two materials exhibit distinguishable elemental contrasts and phase formations. Particularly, the phases indicate vitrification or devitrification in the diffusion layer, influenced by the chemical composition. This issue in the diffusion couple was analyzed with thermophysical properties using light flash analysis (LFA). After, it was confirmed that the vitrification of the diffusion layer can be induced by the conduction behavior of heat trapped between SiAlON and Inconel 718 during supercooling. These characterizations verify that the devitrification of the welding layer (diffusion layer), resulting from the reaction between SiAlON ceramics and Inconel 718 superalloy, can depend on the thermal conductivity of the prepared ceramics. In this work, a series of K 2 O–MgO–B 2 O 3 –P 2 O 5 (KMBP) glasses were prepared by the melt-quenching method and the glass-ceramics were prepared by the one-step heat treatment. The thermal, structural, physical and optical properties, as well as the crystallization behaviour of the KMBP system, were investigated in detail using characterization techniques such as DSC, XRD, SEM, FTIR, transmittance spectroscopy and microhardness. As indicated by DSC, the thermostability and glass-forming ability were gradually enhanced through the partial substitution of K 2 O by MgO. XRD showed that the main crystalline phases of the glass-ceramics (GC) were gradually converted from the P –Mg–K–O based crystalline phases to the P –Mg–O based and the P –Al–O based crystalline phases. The SEM results indicated that tiny grain-like crystals were successfully precipitated from the parent glasses after heat treatment. The deconvoluted FTIR spectra results showed a gradual conversion of the [BO 3 ] and [PO 3 ] units towards the [BO 4 ] and [PO 4 ] units with the increase of the MgO contents. The increase in the degree of glass network polymerization was the essential reason for the increment in the microhardness of the parent glasses. The microhardness of GC featured a trend concordant with the crystallinity of the crystalline phases. The values of metallization criteria (M C) between 0.34 and 0.45, as well as the higher values of third-order nonlinear polarizability (χ (3)) and nonlinear refractive index (n nl) are indicative of the good suitability of the KMBP glasses for the nonlinear optical applications. Barium borosilicate (BBS) glass is a potential three-dimensional system packaging and sensor cover material. In this study, we prepared glass samples with different SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 ratios based on the revised model of Dell and Bray and discussed the effect of boron anomaly on dielectric and thermal properties through Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the [BO 4 ] tetrahedrons are beneficial in reducing the dielectric constant and dielectric loss to a certain extent, while the improvement in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is attributed to the depolymerization of the glass network by the [BO 3 ] triangles. After the disappearance of the boron anomaly, a certain amount of dielectric performance is sacrificed in exchange for an increase in the CTE. When the substitution rate of B 2 O 3 for SiO 2 reaches 15.12 mol%, the CTE of the sample increases to 8.43 × 10−6/°C, in addition, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss decrease to 4.90 and 0.0071 (@1 GHz), respectively. In summary, this work provides a suitable method for preparing glass with a high coefficient of expansion and low dielectric loss to address the thermal mismatch effect of different materials in electronic packaging systems. Bioactive glasses (BG) containing silicon, phosphorous, and boron have emerged as promising materials for bone tissue engineering. Modifying ions play a multifaceted role in BGs, influencing their structure, properties, and biological activity that depends on their size, charge, and coordination chemistry. This study investigates the addition of sodium borate (Na 2 B 4 O 7) to the 58S BG and the mixed alkali effect (MAE) resulting from incorporating Na and B ions into the CaO–SiO 2 –P 2 O 5 system. In specific concentrations, Na+ and Ca2+ ions function as network modifiers, introducing structural disruptions and generating defects that impact the glass transition temperature (T g), crystallization temperature (T c), hardness, and sintering characteristics. The physicochemical characterization of BGs confirms the incorporation of Na and B structures. Furthermore, the Na and B doped glass sample with a [Na/Si] ratio of 0.045 exhibits favorable properties for promoting cell attachment, including forming a hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer over the surface, thereby accelerating human placental mesenchymal stem cells (hPMSCs) proliferation. A structural adhesive series of biomass-based polyurethane (Biomass-PU) is synthesized using polypropylene glycol (PPG2000), isosorbide-based polyol (RPO300) as polyols, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as an isocyanate and 4-tert-butylphenol (BP) as a capping agent. Three different equivalent ratios of PPG2000/RPO300, 9/1 (Biomass-PU1), 7/3 (Biomass-PU2), and 1/1 (Biomass-PU3), are evaluated to determine the effect of isosorbide-based polyol content on the properties and the optimizing formulation of biomass-PU structure adhesive. The 9/1 ratio of PPG2000/RPO300 substantially leads to the improvement of impact strength by up to 35 MPa, and the PPG2000/RPO300 = 9/1 ratio exhibits better thermal properties and impact strength than those of other ratios. To achieve more compatibility between biomass-PU structure adhesive and core–shell rubber (CSR) toughener, novel CSRs are successfully synthesized using acryl-PU as a shell and biomass-based PU as a core. The chemical structure of biomass-PU structure adhesives is analyzed through FT-IR Spectroscopy and NCO% titration. Thermal properties are evaluated using TGA and DSC analysis. Their molecular weights are measured by GPC. Also, the core–shell rubber (CSR) with a polyurethane shell is prepared to reinforce the impact strength of Biomass-PU structure adhesive. This work addresses the problem of obtaining of Ca 3 Co 4 O 9+δ -based ceramics with enhanced thermoelectric performance. Phase-inhomogeneous layered calcium cobaltite ceramics with cationic nonstoichiometry were prepared by solid-state reactions method and a field assisted sintering technology (FAST). Comprehensive experimental characterizations were conducted on the prepared bulk samples, focusing on their phase composition, as well as thermal (including thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, and thermal conductivity), electrical (encompassing electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient), and functional properties (such as power factor and figure-of-merit). The FAST technique allowed to obtain ceramics with low porosity and high electrical conductivity, which increased as the Ca:Co ratio within the samples decreased, while sample phase inhomogeneity considerably increased the Seebeck coefficient. The best thermoelectric performance was demonstrated for cationic nonstoichiometric Ca 3 Co 4.4 O 9+δ , which power factor and figure-of-merit values at 825 °C reached 427 μW⋅m−1⋅K−2 and 0.146, respectively. • Ca 3 Co 4 O 9+δ -based ceramics prepared by field assisted sintering technology possessed low porosity and high conductivity. • Electrical conductivity of bulk samples increased at decreasing Ca:Co ratio. • Phase inhomogeneity of prepared ceramics increased the Seebeck coefficient. • Ca 3 Co 4.4 O 9+δ ceramics showed the best thermoelectric performance. Low-cost amorphous nano-carbon (ANC) was employed as an absorbent to modify the microwave performance of AlN ceramics (AlN-4 wt% Y 2 O 3 - x wt% C, x = 0, 2.0, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0) via hot-pressing sintering, and the thermal and mechanical properties were also investigated. With the increase of ANC content from 0 to 4.0 wt%, the relative density of AlN composite decreases from 3.28 g cm−3 to 3.16 g cm−3 when sintered at 1800 °C for 2 h, and with the increase of sintering temperature from 1700 °C, the density of the 4.0 wt% ANC doped AlN composite presents trend of increase and reaches the maximum value of 3.16 g cm−3 at 1800 °C and then decreases. The XRD pattern shows that the composites are composed of AlN and Y–Al–O (YAG, YAP, YAM et al.) phases. SEM results indicate that average grain sizes for AlN and secondary phases gradually decrease with increasing carbon content, suggesting inhibited grain growth due to ANC addition. No obvious changes in phase constitution nor intensity changes were detected with the increase in carbon content and sintering temperature. As the carbon content increases from 0 to 4.0 wt%, the dielectric constant gradually increases from ∼9 to 13.89 at 10 GHz, the dielectric loss gradually increases from the vicinity of 10−3 to 0.38 at 10 GHz, and the reflective loss decreases from −27.92 dB to −49.40 dB, the thermal conductivity of the AlN-ANC composite decreases from 116.63 W m−1 K−1 to 50.13 W m−1 K−1. In addition, with 4.0 wt% ANC addition, the dielectric constant, dielectric loss, reflective loss, hardness, elastic modulus, bending strength, and fracture toughness are 13.89, 0.38, 49.40 dB, 6.4 ± 0.4 GPa, 262 GPa, 268.78 MPa, and 1.4 ± 0.1 MPa m1/2, respectively. Its ability to efficiently absorb microwave energy enhances the performance of devices including radar systems, communication equipment, and microwave heating systems, making it a promising candidate for microwave vacuum electronic applications. One of the most advanced and versatile nanoscale diagnostic tools is atomic force microscopy. By enabling advanced imaging techniques, it allows us to determine various assets of a surface, including morphological, electrical, mechanical, magnetic, and thermal properties. Measuring local current flow is one of the very important methods of evaluation for, for instance, photovoltaic materials or semiconductor structures and other nanodevices. Due to contact areas, the current densities can easily reach above 1 kA/m2; therefore, special detection/measurement setups are required. They meet the required measurement range, sensitivity, noise level, and bandwidth at the measurement scale. Also, they prevent the sample from becoming damaged and prevent unwanted tip–sample issues. This review explores the integration of graphene and liquid crystals to advance sensor technologies across multiple domains, with a focus on recent developments in thermal and infrared sensing, flexible actuators, chemical and biological detection, and environmental monitoring systems. The synergy between graphene's exceptional electrical, optical, and thermal properties and the dynamic behavior of liquid crystals leads to sensors with significantly enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility. Notable contributions of this review include highlighting key advancements such as graphene-doped liquid crystal IR detectors, shape-memory polymers for flexible actuators, and composite hydrogels for environmental pollutant detection. Additionally, this review addresses ongoing challenges in scalability and integration, providing insights into current research efforts aimed at overcoming these obstacles. The potential for multi-modal sensing, self-powered devices, and AI integration is discussed, suggesting a transformative impact of these composite sensors on various sectors, including health, environmental monitoring, and technology. This review demonstrates how the fusion of graphene and liquid crystals is pushing the boundaries of sensor technology, offering more sensitive, adaptable, and innovative solutions to global challenges. As a critical material for high-temperature components of aero-engines, the mechanical properties of Ti65 alloy, subjected to high-temperature and long-term thermal exposure, directly affect its service safety. The room-temperature tensile properties of the Ti65 alloy after thermal exposure to temperatures ranging from 450 °C to 650 °C for 100 h were investigated. The results indicate that as the thermal exposure temperature increases, the strength of Ti65 alloy initially increases and then decreases, while ductility exhibits a decreasing trend. The strength of the thermally exposed alloy positively correlates with the size and content of the α2 phase. The ductility of the thermally exposed alloy is comprehensively influenced by the surface oxidation behavior, α2 phase, and silicides. After the prolonged thermal exposure, stress concentration at the crack tips within the oxide layer was enhanced with the increased thickness of the surface TiO2 oxide layer, leading to premature fracture due to reduced alloy ductility. Furthermore, the α2 phase in the matrix promotes the planar slip of dislocations, while silicides at the α/β phase boundaries hinder dislocation motion, causing dislocation pile-ups. In the present research, the impacts of Ce additions at various concentrations (0, 1.0, 3.4, and 4.0 wt.%) on the evolution of the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Mg-3Sn alloys were investigated. The findings demonstrate that adding Ce caused the creation of a new ternary MgSnCe phase in the magnesium matrix. Some new Mg17Ce2 phases are generated in the microstructure when Ce levels reach 4%. The thermal conductivity of the Mg-3Sn alloy is significantly improved due to Ce addition, and the Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy exhibits the highest thermal conductivity, up to 133.8 W/(m·K) at 298 K. After extrusion, both the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties are further improved. The thermal conductivity perpendicular to the extrusion direction of Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy could achieve 136.28 W/(m·K), and the tensile and yield strengths reach 264.3 MPa and 227.2 MPa, with an elongation of 7.9%. Adding Ce decreases the dissolved Sn atoms and breaks the eutectic α-Mg and Mg2Sn network organization, leading to a considerable increase in the thermal conductivity of as-cast Mg-3Sn alloys. The study examined the possibility of intercalation of montmorillonite with neomycin in an aqueous drug solution and the factors influencing the effectiveness of this process, such as the ion exchange capacity and process conditions, including the time and temperature of incubation with the drug. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC/TG), and Zeta potential measurement were used to confirm drug intercalation as well as to investigate the nature of clay–drug interactions. The obtained conjugates with the most favorable physicochemical properties were also tested for antibacterial response against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) to confirm that the bactericidal properties of neomycin were retained after intercalation and UV–VIS spectrophotometry was used to examine the kinetics of drug release from the carrier. The results of the conducted research clearly indicate the successful intercalation of neomycin in montmorillonite and indicate the influence of process parameters on the properties of not only the conjugates themselves but also the properties of the intercalated drug, particularly its bactericidal activity. Ultimately, a temperature of 50 °C was found to be optimal for effective drug intercalation and the conjugates obtained within 2 h showed the highest antibacterial activity, indicating the highest potential of the thus-obtained montmorillonite conjugates as neomycin carriers. Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important factor in the marine environment and has significant impacts on climate, ecology, and maritime activities. Most existing SST prediction methods consider the ocean as a uniform field and use a uniform grid to predict SST. However, the marine environment is a complex system, and factors such as solar radiation, differences in land and sea thermal properties, and ocean circulation lead to uneven spatial distributions of SSTs. We propose a non-uniform grid construction method based on an SST spatial gradient to encode SST data, as well as a Non-uniform Grid Graph Convolutional Network (NGGCN) model. The NGGCN consists of two spatiotemporal modules, each of which extracts spatial features from the GCN module, captures temporal correlations through the GRU module, and performs feature restoration and output results through the fully connected module. We selected data from the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea to validate the effectiveness of the NGGCN in predicting SST at different time scales and prediction steps. Fluorosilicone was combined with aluminum trihydrate (ATH) to induce synergistic flame-retardant and thermal-resistant properties. The surface of ATH was modified with four different silane coupling agents. The flammability and mechanical properties of the fluorosilicone/ATH composites were assessed using an UL94 vertical test and a die shear strength test. The change in shear strength was investigated under aging for 1000 h at −55 °C and 150 °C. Pure fluorosilicone had inherent fire resistance and thus achieved a V-0 rating even at 20 wt.% ATH loading. Upon addition of ATH treated with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane, the composites exhibited the highest shear strength of 3.9 MPa at 23 °C because of the additional crosslinking reaction of fluorosilicone resin with the epoxide functional group of the coupling agent. Regardless of the types of coupling agents, the composites exhibited similar flame retardancy at the same ATH content, with a slight reduction in shear strength at 180 °C and 250 °C. The shear strength of the adhesives gradually decreased with aging time at −55 °C, but increased noticeably from 3.9 MPa to 11.5 MPa when aged at 150 °C due to the occurrence of the additional crosslinking reaction of fluorosilicone. Polymer coatings are widely used in industries for protection, decoration, and specific applications, typically including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to achieve low viscosity. The growing environmental concerns and the anticipated limits on fossil feedstock have driven the coating industry towards eco-friendly alternatives, with UV-curing technology emerging as a promising solution due to its energy efficiency, low-temperature operation, reduced VOC emissions, and high curing speed. Polyurethane acrylates (PUAs) are critical in UV-curable formulations, offering excellent flexibility, impact strength, optical, and adhesion properties. However, UV-cured PUA coatings face limitations in thermal stability and tensile strength, which can be addressed by incorporating fillers. This study investigates the effects of multi-functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles on the mechanical, thermal, optical, and adhesion properties of UV-cured PUA films and coatings for pre-coated metals. The results demonstrated that incorporating hBN nanoparticles enhanced the mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposite films, with optimal performance observed at 0.5% hBN loading. Despite the improved properties, the FTIR spectra indicated that the low concentration of hBN did not produce significant changes, potentially due to the overshadowing signals from the difunctional polyurethane acrylate. As an important biodegradable and partially biobased copolyester, poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate) (PBST) possesses comparable thermal and mechanical properties and superior gas barrier performance when compared with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), but it was found to display poorer melt processability during pelletizing and injection molding. To make clear its melt crystallization behavior under rapid cooling, PBST48 and PBST44 were synthesized, and their melt crystallization was investigated comparatively with PBAT48. PBST48 showed a PBAT48-comparable melt crystallization performance at a cooling rate of 10 °C/min or at isothermal conditions, but it showed a melt crystallization ability at a cooling rate of 40 °C/min which was clearly poorer. PBST44, which has the same mass composition as PBAT48, completely lost its melt crystallization ability under the rapid cooling. The weaker chain mobility of PBST, resulting from its shorter succinate moiety, is responsible for its inferior melt crystallization ability and processability. In comparison with PBAT48, PBST48 displayed higher tensile modulus, and both PBST48 and PBST44 showed higher light transmittance. Petroleum-based food packaging causes environmental problems such as waste accumulation and microplastic generation. In this work, biobased films from stable polyelectrolyte complex suspensions (PECs) of xylan and chitosan (70 Xyl/30 Ch wt% mass ratio), at different concentrations of citric acid (CA) (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 wt%), were prepared and characterized. Films were treated at two temperatures (135 °C, 155 °C) and times (30 min, 60 min) to promote covalent crosslinking. Esterification and amidation reactions were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Confocal Raman Microscopy. Water resistance and dry and wet stress–strain results were markedly increased by thermal treatment, mainly at 155 °C. The presence of 5 wt% CA tended to increase dry and wet stress–strain values further, up to 88 MPa—10% (155 °C for 60 min), and 5.6 MPa—40% (155 °C for 30 min), respectively. The UV-blocking performance of the films was improved by all treatments, as was thermal stability (up to Tonset: 230 °C). Contact angle values were between 73 and 84°, indicating partly wettable surfaces. Thermoset-based polymer composites containing functional fillers are promising materials for a variety of applications, such as in the aerospace and medical fields. However, the resin viscosity is often unsuitably high and thus impedes a successful filler dispersion in the matrix. This challenge can be overcome by incorporating suitable low-viscosity modifiers into the prepolymer. While modifiers can aptly influence the prepolymer rheology, they can also affect the prepolymer curing behavior and the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting matrix material. Therefore, this study investigates the effects that a commercial-grade low-viscosity additive (butyl glycidyl ether) has on a common epoxy polymer system (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy with a methylene dianiline curative). The weight percentage of the modifier inside the epoxy was varied from 0 to 20%. The rheological properties and cure kinetics of the resulting materials were investigated. The prepolymer viscosity decreased by 97% with 20 wt% modifier content at room temperature. Upon curing, 20 wt% modifier addition reduced the exothermic peak temperature by 12% and prolonged the time to reach the peak by 60%. For cured material samples, physical and thermo-mechanical properties were characterized. A moderate reduction in glass transition temperature and an increase in elastic modulus was observed with 20 wt% modifier content (in the order of 10%). Based on these findings, the selected material system is seen as an expedient base for material design due to the ease of processing and material availability. Manufacturing of several products with better quality and features in industries depends upon the cooling processes. Based on the thermal properties, this research aims to investigate the effect of dissipative heat in non-Newtonian Jeffrey nanofluid flow along horizontal channels embedded in a porous matrix. Due to cross-diffusion, the time-dependent electrically conducting fluid presents the role of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. Further, the conjunction of binary chemical reactions encourages the flow phenomena. The appropriate choice of the similarity variables helps to transform a dimensional system of the governing equations into their non-dimensional form. Further, the shooting-based Runge–Kuta–Fehlberg method is used to solve the transformed governing equations. The susceptibility of either oxidation into Sn(IV) or disproportionation into Sn(IV) and Sn(0) limits the study of metal tin‐(II)‐borate ceramics. We report mullite‐type SnCrBO4 and SnVBO4 synthesized in sealed quartz tubes by conventional solid‐state method. X‐ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements confirm that both compounds are isostructural to PbMBO4 phases for M = Al, Ga, Cr, Mn, and Fe. The end‐members show a complete miscibility within the Sn(Cr1−xVx)BO4 solid solution. Both the microstructural (average crystallite size, microstrain, and degree of crystallinity) and crystal structural (metric parameters, bond lengths, polyhedral volume, and polyhedral distortion) parameters are observed with respect to the compositional x‐value. The stereochemical activity of the 5 s2 lone electron pairs of Sn2+ cations has been measured by using the Wang–Liebau eccentricity parameter. The structural features are complemented by 119Sn Mössbauer, Raman, and Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopy. The 119Sn Mössbauer isomer shifts and the quadrupole splitting values confirm the SnO4 coordination and an Sn(II) valence state. The electronic band gap has been calculated from the UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, which slightly increases with successive decrease of the cationic radius from V to Cr. Temperature‐dependent inverse DC magnetic susceptibility suggests that SnCrBO4 and SnVBO4 are antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic (FM) with a Néel temperature of 17.2(1) K and a Curie temperature of 29.8(1) K, respectively. Thermal and electrical properties were investigated for five nominally phase‐pure high entropy carbide ceramics. The compositions (Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C, (Cr0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C, (Hf0.2Mo0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C, (Hf0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2Zr0.2)C, and (Hf0.2Mo0.2Ti0.2W0.2Zr0.2)C were synthesized by carbothermal reduction of oxides. The thermal diffusivity and heat capacity were measured from room temperature to 1800°C. The room temperature thermal conductivity ranged from 5.1 W/mK for (Hf0.2Mo0.2Ti0.2W0.2Zr0.2)C to 9.0 W/mK for (Cr0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C. The thermal conductivity increased over the temperature range with maximum conductivities of 19.6 W/mK measured for (Hf0.2Mo0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C to 29.7 W/mK for (Cr0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2Zr0.2)C at 1800°C. The electron contribution to thermal conductivity calculated from measured electrical resistivity varied from 41% to 52% of the total thermal conductivity. The tungsten and molybdenum containing compositions had higher phonon contributions while the niobium and chromium containing compositions had nearly equal electron and phonon contributions to thermal conductivity. In this paper large deformation of the skew microplate made of laminated composite enhanced with graphene nanosheets is investigated using first shear deformation theory (FSDT) when the plate undergoes combination of mechanical and thermal loads. Halpin-Tsai model is utilised to model mechanical properties while for thermal properties Schapery model is considered. First, shear deformation of the plate was obtained while using Green-Lagrange tensor the non-linear strain of the microplate is extracted using the von-Karman assumptions. Then, by Modified Coupled Stress Theory (MCSD), the components of Cauchy and Couple stress tensors are specified. Finally, using Hamilton Principle the governing equation of the microplate and boundary conditions are computed. After deriving analytical governmental equation results are presented for the simple support boundary condition and the proposed model is validated by previously reported data and it proves to be promising. Primary results showed that with raising skew angle deflection and bending moment decreases which means microplate becomes more rigid in higher skew angles. Higher mechanical loads lead to higher deflections and bending moments. Four different configurations of the layers were analysed from which angle-ply configuration possessed highest deflection and bending while UD configuration revealed the lowest values of deflection and bending moment. The present study intends to investigate the impact of fractionation and micronization on the compositional, functional, and thermal characteristics of two protein concentrates derived from corn and barley. Fractionation of protein concentrates (by sieving) resulted in three fractions, i.e., fine (< 100 µm), medium (100–300 µm), and coarse (> 300 µm), while micronization resulted in an average particle size of 30 µm. No specific pattern was observed between particle size and chemical composition of corn and barley protein concentrates due to the complex interplay between particle size, surface area, structural changes, and botanical origin. Protein solubility varied depending on the pH and particle size, showing that the coarse fraction exhibited higher solubility than the fine fraction. For both corn/barley protein concentrates, coarse fraction had higher water-/oil-holding capacity. The barley fine fraction showed high foaming capacity, while all proteins lacked emulsification ability. Across all samples, a trend of increasing enthalpy with decreased particle size was observed, except for micronized barley, where enthalpy decreased, indicating possible protein structural changes. In the present study, the fatty acid composition (FAC), triacylglycerol (TAG) composition, crystallization, and melting behaviors of mango kernel fats (MKFs) extracted from seven Ivorian mango varieties—Amelie (AM), Kent (KT), Palmer (PR), Keitt (KI), Brooks (BR), Dadiani (DI), and Djakoumankoun (DN)—were characterized by complementary techniques: pNMR, DSC, polarized light microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Regardless of the variety, Ivorian MKF is rich in stearic (St) and oleic (O) fatty acids. (72–84% of the total FA), with three main TAGs: StOSt (23.9–45.8%), StOO (15.5–25.8%), and StLSt (10.4–12.5%). Their crystallization onset temperature (Tco) ranged from 15 to 20 °C. All samples showed complete melting around 35 °C, except DN (~ 38 °C). The β-polymorph appeared to be the most predominant and stable polymorph for the seven MKFs. The thermal properties investigated were linked to monounsaturated and triunsaturated triacylglycerol content, indicating the significant influence of chemical composition. The fine analysis of the results allows the seven Ivorian varieties to be divided into four groups, based on both their physical properties and thermal behavior, and the StOSt wealth: hard high-StOSt fat (DN), half-hard medium-StOSt fat (DI, BR), soft low-StOSt fat (KT, PR, KI), and very-soft very-low-StOSt fat (AM). High-entropy ceramics have garnered significant attention in recent years owing to their exceptional properties and structural diversity. In this work, single-phase medium/high entropy ceramics, namely (Ca 0.2 Sr 0.4 Ba 0.4)(Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5)O 3 and (Ca 0.2 Sr 0.4 Ba 0.4)(Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9)O 3 , were successfully designed and prepared utilizing Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). A comprehensive investigation was conducted into the phase structure, microscopic morphology, dielectric properties, and thermal behavior of these ceramics. It was observed that all ceramics maintained a cubic perovskite structure (space group: Pm 3 ‾ m), and the introduction of multi-element doping rendered them more stable across a wide frequency and temperature range. Notably, (Ca 0.2 Sr 0.4 Ba 0.4)(Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5)O 3 exhibited remarkably low dielectric loss (0.0001 at 1 kHz) at room temperature, along with excellent dielectric temperature stability (25–400 °C). By reducing the zirconium concentration in (Ca 0.2 Sr 0.4 Ba 0.4)(Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9)O 3 , a slight decrease in dielectric temperature stability was observed (25–350 °C); however, it demonstrated lower thermal conductivity (0.41 W/(m·K), 1200 °C) and maintained good high-temperature stability. Borophosphosilicate glasses with varying sodium ion concentrations were investigated for their, structural, thermal, and electrical properties. All the obtained glasses were transparent except the glass with the highest sodium content, which exhibited translucency due to inhomogeneities. Increasing sodium content led to reduced boron and silicon content while maintaining a constant B/Si ratio, indicating progressive depolymerization of the glass network. Confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy showed homogeneous and granular structure for samples with lower sodium content, but higher sodium content resulted in visible agglomeration/nanocrystallization. X-ray diffractograms showed amorphous nature for most samples, with samples doped with the highest concentrations of Na 2 O showing several broad reflections suggesting nanoscale crystallinity. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed shifts in dominant bands with increasing sodium content, indicating depolymerization of the borate network. An observed decrease in glass transition temperature and thermal stability with increasing sodium content was attributed to depolymerization and formation of non-bridging oxygens. Impedance spectroscopy revealed two relaxation processes associated with the transport of Na+ ions through two different regions. Aluminum nitride (AlN), prized for its high thermal conductivity and electronic insulating properties, finds widespread use in electronic applications, particularly as a substrate material. However, its relatively low fracture toughness limits its application. In this study, to enhance both the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN ceramics, we thoroughly investigate the microstructure, thermal, and mechanical properties of self-reinforced AlN ceramics fabricated by spark plasma sintering, with self-reinforcement achieved through the integration of AlN whiskers within the AlN matrix. Unlike previous studies utilizing conventional pressureless sintering with limited sintering conditions, this work employs spark plasma sintering with a wide range of temperatures (1600–1900 °C) and holding times (10–30 min), providing a comprehensive understanding of the sintering behavior. Microstructural features, observed through optical and scanning electron microscopy, reveal distinct toughening mechanisms via crack deflection and branching, with a maximum 20% enhancement. The self-reinforced AlN ceramics exhibit remarkable improvements in thermal conductivity, reaching up to 150 W m−1 K−1, surpassing reported values for spark plasma-sintered AlN ceramics. Adding AlN whiskers enhances the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN simultaneously, particularly at 1800 °C for 10 min with controlled grain size and nicely integrated AlN whiskers. Addressing the issue of carbon contamination during the smelting of specialty metals or alloys, utilizing graphite crucibles, has attracted considerable research attention, prompting the exploration of novel ceramic crucible materials. AlN ceramic, renowned for their exceptional high-temperature stability and resistance to corrosion, have emerged as promising candidates to mitigate this concern. Nonetheless, the limited mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of AlN curtail its widespread application. In this study, Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 was introduced as an additive to enhance AlN's properties, and AlN-based composite ceramics were fabricated by employing pressureless sintering. The effects of Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 addition (3–10 wt%) on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of the resulting composites were examined. The findings revealed that the incorporation of 5 wt% Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 (AlN-5YZO) led to the highest relative density and a refined grain structure, resulting in superior mechanical properties. Notably, the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness of AlN-5YZO reached 322 MPa, 3.70 MPa m1/2, and 13.34 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of crack branching and crack deflection within the composite ceramics impeded crack propagation, effectively augmenting their thermal shock resistance. AlN-5YZO samples exhibited residual strength retention rates of 91.0 %, 84.2 %, and 76.7 % after 10, 20, and 50 thermal shocks between 1000 and 1600 °C, surpassing those of pure AlN. The novel plasma ageing technique has been used to investigate the effects of different treatment times of a co-polymer reinforced with montmorillonite nanoclay, where the effects of plasma ageing of the reinforced acrylic co-polymer (BA, STY and MAA) were obtained with nanoclay (sodium MMT) at different concentrations. The molecular weights of the samples were obtained by observing the change in the viscosity of the nonreinforced polymers, as well as an analysis of the thermal properties using the thermogravimetric analysis technique to determine their thermal stability, which showed an early decomposition of the exposed nanoreinforced materials to plasma concerning the reference sample 0 min. The differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed an increase in the glass transition temperature when adding the nanoreinforcement, but a decrease with saturation, likewise, it was observed that when adding this nanoreinforcement (MMT) to the polymeric matrix this protects the matrix when exposed to plasma. This acquires an increase in elastic modulus, which indicates a fragility in the nanomaterial. The structure of the nanocomposite was studied by means of the X-ray diffraction technique of the samples exposed to plasma treatment, obtaining patterns where intercalated nanocomposites are present. Ternary half-Heusler (HH) alloys are under intense investigations recently towards achieving high thermoelectric (TE) figure-of-merit (ZT). Of particular interest is the ZrNiPb-based HH alloy, where an optimal value of ZT ~ 0.7 at 773 K has been achieved by co-doping Sn and Bi at Pb site. In this work, we identify an excellent ZT of 1.3 in ZrNi1+xPb0.38Sn0.6Bi0.02 (x = 0.03, at 773 K) composite alloy. This is achieved by synergistic modulation of electronic as well as thermal properties via introduction of minor phase of full-Heusler (FH) in the HH matrix through compositional tuning approach. These Ni-rich ZrNi1+xPb0.38Sn0.6Bi0.02 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.07) alloys were synthesized via energy efficient and time-curbed techniques that involved Arc melting followed by consolidation via spark plasma sintering. These alloys were characterized by XRD and SEM, which show formation of nanocomposites comprising of HH matrix phase and FH secondary minor phases. Enhancement in ZT is mainly attributed to a synchronized increase in power factor (~42%) and ~25% decrease in its thermal conductivity. Here, TE compatibility factor (S) was also calculated for all samples. The value of |S| ~ 2.7 V−1 (at 773 K) is observed for x = 0.03, which is ~17% higher than bare HH composition (x = 0.0). The theoretically calculated TE device efficiency of best-performing sample ZrNi1.03Pb0.38Sn0.6Bi0.02 is estimated to be η ~ 13.6%. Our results imply that deliberately controlled fine tuning in compositions of HH compounds through compositional tuning approach would lead to novel off-stoichiometric HH phases with enhanced ZT value for efficient TE device fabrication. Polypropylene multifilament yarns produced with flame-retardant (FR) additives have a significant place in the technical textile market. Determination of the technical performances of these multifilaments is very important. In addition, effects of the additive in the filament structure on the thermal and structural properties of the filament must be examined. In this study, new polypropylene polymer (PP) filament yarns having FR properties were produced and their thermal properties and crystallization data were determined and results are interpreted. Thermal properties and crystallization data of the PP multifilament yarns were determined by DSC analysis. Further, values of crystalline region ratio were determined and thermogram graphs of all samples were interpreted. As can be seen from the graphs, PP filaments had two consecutive melting points because PP has a double melting peak due to its structural character. Also, it has been observed that there is a direct proportionality between the melting enthalpy values of PP filaments and crystalline region ratios (%). The melting point was not significantly affected by the amount of FR additive. The addition of FR granule to PP filament further increases the enthalpy (∆Hm) required to melt the filament but there was no effect on melting temperature due to loading of FR additive to the PP filament yarns. This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of the freezing-thawing behavior of water in fully saturated sand. A relatively inexpensive and easily replicable experimental procedure was developed to simulate the freezing-thawing cycles in a medium-sized sand sample placed in a modified commercial freezer. By insulating the sides and bottom of the sample well, while allowing good thermal conductivity at the top of the sample, a nearly vertical advance of the freezing and thawing front was achieved. A series of freeze-thaw cycles were performed with higher and lower temperature gradients. A numerical multiphysics model, assuming an axially symmetric geometry based on the transient heat transfer during the phase transition, used a parametric approach to estimate the effective thermal properties of the sand-water-ice system. A good agreement between experimental and modelling results was shown, but slightly different parameter sets were obtained for each temperature gradient. The segment character of polyurethanes (PUs) determines the micromorphology and properties. The effective segment regulation can customize the favorable performance of PUs. Herein, silicon covalent‐modified polyurethanes (MPUs) were prepared by incorporating diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and diphenyl silanediol (DPSD) into PU molecules as hard segments via a two‐step method. Distinctive microphase separation structures from sheet morphology to radial sheet or withered flower‐like microdomain were formed by adjusting hydrogen bonding of hard segments and post‐treatment techniques. Thus, with the addition of DPSD in hard segments, the thermo‐optic responses for MPUs occurred due to the different microphase evolution under thermal effect. And with the further addition of DPSD, the effect of thermal stimuli on the transmittance gradually weakened. It was very clear that with increasing the temperature, the transmittance of MPUs showed a gradual increase owing to melting the microcrystals or destroying the ordered accumulation of hard segments. Meanwhile, the high mechanical properties were obtained, higher 15 times tensile strength and more than 100 times elastic modulus than those of pure PU as well as the excellent thermal stability. In sum, this study was of great significance for developing new functionalized PU materials. Bismaleimide (BMI) resins is widely used in the aerospace field because of its excellent properties, but its poor toughness limits the possibility of its application in a wider range of fields. Therefore, a novel bio‐compound, 4‐(allyloxy)‐3‐methoxy‐N‐(3‐(triethoxysilyl)propyl)benzamide (AMTPM), was designed and synthesized from renewable vanillin, which has Schiff‐base structure, silico‐oxygen bond structure, and allyl structure. The chemical structure of AMTPM has been characterized and validated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). It was found that the addition of AMTPM can effectively promote the curing behavior of BD resins (BMI and diallyl bisphenol A (DBA) was mixed and cured at the ratio of 1:0.87, named BD resins). AMTPM can affect the thermal stability and improve the mechanical properties of BD‐AMTPM resins (BD resins modified by AMTPM in different addition), and the detailed discussion was conducted. With the increase of AMTPM content, the thermal stability of BD‐AMTPM resins was deteriorated while the residual weight percentage at 800°C (Yc) was increased. When the content of AMTPM reached 12 wt%, the results showed that Yc achieved the values at a magnitude of 37.57%. Meanwhile, the glass transition temperature (Tg) achieved 320°C. Among the BD‐AMTPM resins system, the BD‐6 wt% AMTPM has the best toughness and mechanical properties. The impact strength was increased by 29.2%, the tensile strength was increased by 22.1% and the elongation at break was increased by 44%. The fracture morphology of BD‐AMTPM resins was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to support the mechanical experimental conclusions. This study provides a more environmentally friendly and convenient modifier, which is of great significance for expanding the application of bismaleimide resin. One-dimensional negative thermal expansion material has important applications in thermal expansion control and fiber toughened composite. Orthorhombic Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 nanofibers have been prepared by electrospinning. The phase composition, microstructure, morphology, and thermal expansion performance of the samples prepared at various temperatures were investigated. Results show that as-prepared Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 nanofibers are smooth and homogeneous with a fiber diameter of about 370.00 nm, but they show an amorphous structure. Orthorhombic Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 nanofibers can be obtained at 550 ℃ with a diameter of around 140.00 nm. With the increase of post-annealing temperatures, the crystallization of the samples was improved. However, higher post-annealing temperatures will destroy the nanofiber structure of the samples. HTXRD reveals that orthorhombic Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 nanofibers show anisotropic NTE in 25–700 °C. The expansion coefficients αa, αb, and αc of Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 nanofibers are −5.05 × 10–6 °C−1, 4.41 × 10–6 °C−1, and −3.18 × 10–6 °C−1, respectively. Whey protein hydrolysates, derived from enzymatic hydrolysis of whey protein isolates or concentrates, offer enhanced bioavailability and solubility compared to intact whey protein. In this study, whey protein hydrolysates (WPHs) having different hydrolysis degrees (5%, 10%, and 15%) were produced and muffin cakes were enriched with the addition of WPHs. In general, the addition of WPHs showed a significant effect on oil and protein content while the emulsion activity was improved with the increased hydrolysis degree (HD). The degree of hydrolysis increment resulted in a significant increase in both antioxidant power and antiradical activity of the WPHs. Ferric‐reducing antioxidant power and ABTS radical scavenging activity ranged between 18.83–87.27 mg TE/100 g and 211.8–5063.1 mg TE/100 g, respectively. The highest FRAP and ABTS values were recorded for the 15% HD while the lowest was for the native whey protein isolate (WPI). The induction periods giving a clear information for the oxidative stability were 1593 min for the control muffins, and it was 1654 for the muffin added with WPI. Rheological data revealed that all cake batter samples including WPHs showed viscoelastic behavior. Thermal conductivity of moulding sands is very poorly known. In addition, the study of thermal conductivity variation of moulding sand as a function of its properties is a crucial step in the prediction of moulding defects. So, this study investigates the effects of moisture content, compactibility and permeability of green sand on its thermal conductivity variation, with a specific focus on the combination of bentonite, sand and water for thermal characterization of the transient hot-bridge (THB) method. Three levels of active clay content were selected: 8.1%, 8.98% and 10.03%. For each level of active clay, different mixes were made by varying the amount of added water. Compactibility, permeability and thermal conductivity tests were carried out for each combination of active clay and moisture contents. The experimental results show that thermal conductivity increases with water content and compactibility for different active clay contents, whereas thermal conductivity decreases with permeability, and this variation is highly significant especially for 8.07% of active clay content. Epoxy resins, known for their excellent properties, are widely used thermosetting resins, but their tendency towards brittle fracture limits their applications. This study addresses this issue by preparing graphene oxide via the Hummer method, modifying it with hyperbranched polyamide ester, and reducing it with hydrazine hydrate to obtain functionalized graphene. This functionalized graphene improves compatibility with epoxy resin. Using a novel two-phase extraction method, different ratios of functionalized graphene/epoxy composites were prepared and tested for mechanical properties and thermal stability. The results showed significant improvements: the tensile strength of composites with 0.1 wt% functionalized graphene increased by 77% over pure epoxy resin, flexural strength by 56%, and glass transition temperature by 50°C. These enhancements, attributed to the improved compatibility between graphene and epoxy resin, demonstrate the potential of functionalized graphene to mitigate the brittleness of epoxy resins, expanding their application potential. People can use their sense of hearing for discerning thermal properties, though they are for the most part unaware that they can do so. While people unequivocally claim that they cannot perceive the temperature of pouring water through the auditory properties of hearing it being poured, our research further strengthens the understanding that they can. This multimodal ability is implicitly acquired in humans, likely through perceptual learning over the lifetime of exposure to the differences in the physical attributes of pouring water. In this study, we explore people's perception of this intriguing cross modal correspondence, and investigate the psychophysical foundations of this complex ecological mapping by employing machine learning. Our results show that not only can the auditory properties of pouring water be classified by humans in practice, the physical characteristics underlying this phenomenon can also be classified by a pre-trained deep neural network. In this paper, a novel composite phase change material (CPCM) is prepared with inorganic PCM through impregnation and dispersion method which can be used for thermal management applications. Inorganic PCMs have high latent heat and good thermal conductivity and are non-flammable, but there exist leakage (shape stability) and corrosion problems. To overcome these issues, a porous structured material is impregnated with the inorganic PCM (disodium hydrogen orthophosphate dodecahydrate). The CPCM is prepared by loading various wt% of expanded graphite and boron nitride nanoparticles with the PCM, and characterization is performed to find the thermal properties and stability. The findings from FTIR and XRD analyses validate both the chemical compatibility and crystalline nature of the samples. DSC thermographs reveal the CPCM5 sample has a latent heat value of 168.05 J/g during the heating process, an encapsulation efficiency of 78.8% and a thermal conductivity of 4.69 W/mK. The thermal stability and resistance to corrosion of the composite samples are also enhanced. The best composite PCM sample is then selected, and subsequently, the thermal performance of the heat sink is experimentally investigated. The thermal performance of rectangular cavity heat sink filled with CPCM5 is the highest for various power sources and temperatures with a maximum enhancement ratio of 6.57. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have drawn extensive attention due to their exceptional characteristics and potential uses in electronics and energy storage. This investigation employs simulations using molecular dynamics to examine the mechanical and thermal transport attributes of the 2D silicene–germanene (Si-Ge) lateral heterostructure. The pre-existing cracks of the Si-Ge lateral heterostructure are addressed with external strain. Then, the effect of vacancy defects and temperature on the mechanical attributes is also investigated. By manipulating temperature and incorporating vacancy defects and pre-fabricated cracks, the mechanical behaviors of the Si-Ge heterostructure can be significantly modulated. In order to investigate the heat transport performance of the Si-Ge lateral heterostructure, a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics approach is employed. The efficient phonon average free path is obtained as 136.09 nm and 194.34 nm, respectively, in the Si-Ge heterostructure with a zigzag and armchair interface. Amid the current environmental crisis caused by plastic accumulation, one of the proposed solutions to manage this problem is using biodegradable polymers. However, the impact of adding biodegradable polymers to the well-established circular economy of recyclable polymers, such as HDPE, has not been fully considered. Therefore, there is a need to reconsider the way we consume, dispose of, and manage biodegradable polymers after use. This study evaluates the effect of varying the contents of a biodegradable polymer, taking poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a model biodegradable polymer, on the thermal and mechanical properties of HDPE. The study highlights the importance of identifying and disposing of biodegradable polymers to avoid mixtures with HDPE, in order not to affect mechanical performance when considering reprocessing and a new life cycle of this conventional polymer. Biodegradable and bio-based polymers, including polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), and poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA), stand out as sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics for a wide range of consumer applications. Studying binary and ternary blends is essential to exploring the synergistic combinations and efficiencies of three distinct biopolyesters. A comprehensive evaluation of melt-extruded binary and ternary polymer blends of PHA, PLA, and PBSA was conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed a heterogeneous morphology characteristic of immiscible blends, with a predominant spherical inclusion morphology observed in the majority of the blends. An increased PBSA concentration led to an elevation in melt viscosity and elasticity across both ternary and binary blends. An increased PHA content reduced the viscosity, along with both storage and loss moduli in the blends. Moreover, a rise in PHA concentration within the blends led to increased crystallinity, albeit with a noticeable reduction in the crystallization temperature of PHA. PLA retained amorphous structure in the blends. The resultant bio-based blends manifested enhanced rheological and calorimetric traits, divergent from their pure polymer counterparts, highlighting the potential for optimizing material properties through strategic formulation adjustments.
