This study investigated the tolerance of resting eggs of Eurytemora pacifica to storage under low temperatures, which is of particular interest in light of the recent use of nauplii as living food in aquaculture, other than conditions experienced also in the wild during winter cold events in the Northern Hemisphere. Sediment samples collected in August 2020 were used to store the resting eggs at two different freezing temperatures (−5 and −20 °C) for five different durations (1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months). The mean hatching success rates of the resting eggs after one month of storage were 85.3 ± 1.5% (−5 °C) and 85.0 ± 3.6% (−20 °C), with no significant difference between freezing temperatures. However, significant differences emerged over time, with the mean hatching success rate remaining at 85.0 ± 3.6% at −5 °C after three months, while it dropped sharply to 1.7 ± 2.1% at −20 °C. For the non-freezing conditions, the hatching success at 10 °C increased gradually over the one-month incubation period, ultimately reaching 71.0%. These findings demonstrate the remarkable cold tolerance of E. pacifica but also indicate a limit to this tolerance at longer durations. These results underscore the importance of considering the adoption of storage freezing for resting eggs to be used for aquaculture and also suggest the possibility of the species better surviving the extreme weather events in comparison with other species. The first systematic sediment survey by the icebreaker Shirase (AGB-5003) was conducted during the 61st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-61). Sediment samples were obtained from a total of 28 sites in 3 areas of the Totten Glacier front–Dalton polynya, Lützow-Holm Bay and Cape Darnley polynya using a large-bore gravity corer and GSJ-type K-grab sampler. In this paper, details of the survey operation are described as a reference for the future experience. In addition, preliminary results of the obtained sediments are reported as a fundamental information for future analysis using these samples.

The complex aquatic system of dam reservoirs is known to trap emerging pollutants as microplastics (MPs) in sediments and water column. Considering the knowledge gaps in this type of environment, we investigated the amount and distribution of MPs in the surface water layer, as well as in the surface and deep sediments of the Siriu Reservoir in the Buzău River system, which is located in the southern area of the Eastern Carpathians, Romania. There was a discrepancy between MP abundancy in both water and sediment samples collected near the reservoir (5.3 MPs/m3, 315.5 MPs/kg) and at several kilometers downstream of the dam (1.4 MPs/m3, 132.5 MPs/kg). The chronological accumulation of MPs in the lacustrine sediments was determined by analyzing 5 cm intervals of a 50 cm length core extracted from the reservoir bed. By comparing the concentration of MPs identified in each interval with the solid debit volumes registered in the last decade, we found that flood events could be traced easily due to abundant MP accumulation. Morphologically, the particles were observed mainly as fibers and fragments. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-iR) investigations identified most of the MPs as polypropylene (28%), polyethylene (26%), and polyethylene terephthalate (19%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine microplastics have received considerable attention, and efforts are underway to develop standardised methods for sampling, sample treatment, and analysis, while the observation of freshwater ecosystems remains relatively overlooked. To address this understudied environment, we present a comprehensive case study on microplastics in an urban lake from Baltic region of Northern Europe covering the seasonal dynamics of microplastics in surface water, deposition rate throughout one year in sediment traps and distribution of microplastics in dated sediment archive to determine the most representative environmental compartment for microplastic pollution monitoring. The following well-established microplastic research methods have been used: Manta trawling for surface water, trapping for assessing microplastics sedimentation rate and coring for sediments. Attenuated total reflection and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy methods were used to investigate the synthetic nature of identified particles. The sediment core chronology was based on 210Pb and Bayesian Plum model revealing sediment layers to represent even the time before the beginning of plastic mass production (approximately 1950). The surface water microplastic concentrations were higher in summer (5.71 particles/m3) and gradually decreased towards winter (0.75 particles/m3); they were almost 25 times higher in more recent (2018) sediments than in the deeper layers referring to years prior to 1890. Surprisingly, microplastic particles were found in sediments before the year 1950. The microplastic deposition rate was 9.47 particles/cm2/year or 4.31 µg/cm2/year. The most abundant polymers were polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene, and the prominent particle shapes were fibres in surface water and fragments in sediments. Our results provide a baseline for evaluating future contamination level changes in highly urbanized area. We recommend the combination of surface water filtering with net and sediment trapping methods for monitoring microplastics in lakes since this method requires little time and financial resources for sampling and processing and produces information on temporal microplastic occurrence and deposition.

Carbon accumulation in coastal wetlands is normally assessed by extracting a sediment core and estimating its carbon content and bulk density. Because carbon content and bulk density are functionally related, the latter can be estimated gravimetrically from a section of the core or, alternatively, from the carbon content in the sample using the mixing model equation from soil science. Using sediment samples from La Paz Bay, Mexico, we analyzed the effect that the choice of corer and the method used to estimate bulk density could have on the final estimates of carbon storage in the sediments. We validated the results using a larger dataset of tropical mangroves, and then by Monte Carlo simulation. The choice of corer did not have sizable influence on the final estimates of carbon density. The main factor in selecting a corer is the operational difficulties that each corer may have in different types of sediments. Because of the multiplication of errors in a product of two variables subject to random sampling error, when using gravimetric estimates of bulk density, the dispersion of the data points in the estimation of total carbon density rises rapidly as the amount of carbon in the sediment increases. In contrast, the estimation of total carbon density using only the carbon fraction as a predictor is very precise, especially in sediments rich in organic matter. This method, however, depends critically on the accurate estimation of the two parameters of the mixing model: the bulk density of pure peat and the bulk density of pure mineral sediment. The estimation of carbon densities in peaty sediments can be very imprecise when using gravimetric bulk densities. Estimating carbon density in peaty sediments using only the estimate of organic fraction can be much more precise, provided the model parameters are estimated with accuracy. These results open the door for simplified and precise estimates of carbon dynamics in mangroves and coastal wetlands.

The historical sedimentary and evolutionary characteristics of persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors in typical regions of the Three Gorges Reservoir are scarcely studied. Herein, the 96-year data on contaminated sediment history were reconstructed using Caesium 137 isotope dating. Polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations in the involved sediment cores ranged from non-detected (ND) to 11.39 ng/g. The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from ND to 2075.20 ng/g and peaked in the 1970s owing to natural, agricultural and human activities. Further, phthalate esters (PAEs) and heavy metals (HMs) were detected at concentrations ranging from ND to 589.2 ng/g and 12.10–93.67 μg/g, respectively, with highest values recorded in the 1980s owing to rapid industrialisation and insufficient management during China's early reform and development stages. PAE and HM concentrations have increased in recent years, suggesting the need to focus on industrial and agricultural activities that have caused this impact. Although current pollutant concentrations in sediments do not pose a risk to the aquatic ecosystem, they should be continuously monitored.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are an emerging class of contaminants that have been produced since the 1950s. The first report on PFAS to raise global concerns was published in 2001. Since then, many countries have implemented policies to control PFAS. In this study, PFAS in the water, sediment, and biota in coastal areas were surveyed to review their use since their earliest production by using chronological methods combined with previous policy restrictions imposed on PFAS. In the meantime, reports of existing PFAS were evaluated to assess the ecological and health risks of seafood consumption by coastal populations. Following the restrictions on PFAS, the concentrations of PFAS have been decreasing steadily. With regard to the current occurrences of PFAS in water and sediment, there is almost no ecological risk. However, different gender and age groups are still at risk of exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate and require constant monitoring. It is expected that the negative impacts of PFAS on the environment and human health will continue to decrease with the implementation of the emerging pollution control policy by the Chinese government in 2023.

Atribacteria play an important role in global carbon cycling. Little is known, however, about the Atribacteria communities found in alpine lakes. The presence and diversity of Atribacteria in the sediment core of alpine Sayram lake in China were investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing in this study. According to the findings, Atribacteria affiliated with JS1 were dominant in the sediment core of Sayram Lake, with a relative abundance of 0.19 to 10% (average 3.75%) of all bacterial sequences. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Atribacteria associated with JS1 increased with sediment depth. As a result, this study significantly contributes to our understanding of Atribacteria community habitat.

The Gulf of Guinea is known to be highly productive owing to its ecological and economical significance. Given its importance, detailed evaluation of the major elements (Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Na, Al, K and Si) and trace metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, As, Sc, V, Th and U) were analyzed from the sediment core within this basin for the first time. This study aims to determine their baseline composition, pollution level, and ecological risk. Analyses of these metals using inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) with Agilent SPS3 Autosampler showed the descending order of Na > Fe > Ca > Si > Mg > Al > K > Mn and Zn > U > V > Ni > Cr > Th > Pb > As > Cu > Sc for major and trace element respectively. The pollution indices and sediment qualities were assessed using the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk factor (Er), modified hazard quotient (mHQ), pollution load index (PLI), ecological risk index (RI), single metal toxic risk index (TRIi) and integrated Toxic risk index (TRI) at three stations (stations A, B, and C). Except for As and U, the mean concentrations of the metals were lower than their respective background values. Based on the pollution indices, the studied trace metals were found to have severe EF (>25) with respect to Zn and V, considerable CF (3 ≤ CF ≤ 6) for As, and high CF (> 6) for U. The Igeo values of all the trace metals indicated unpolluted to moderately polluted status (0 ≤ lgeo ≤ 1). The Er ranges (0.05–41.80) indicate low to moderate ecological risk, while mHQ (< 1) values indicate very low severity of contamination. Ice scours are formed when the keels of floating icebergs or sea ice hummocks penetrate unlithified seabed sediments. Until now, ice scours have been divided into "relict" and "modern" according to the water depth that corresponds with the possible maximum vertical dimensions of the keels of modern floating icebergs. However, this approach does not consider climatic changes at the present sea level, which affect the maximum depth of ice keels. We present an application of 210Pb dating of the largest ice scour in the Baydaratskaya Bay area (Kara Sea), located at depths of about 28–32 m. Two sediment cores were studied; these were taken on 2 November 2021 from the R/V Akademik Nikolay Strakhov directly in the ice scour and on the "background" seabed surface, not processed via ice scouring. According to the results of 210Pb dating, the studied ice scour was formed no later than the end of the Little Ice Age. Based on the extrapolation of possible sedimentation rates prior to 1917 (0.22–0.38 cm/year), the age of the ice scour is estimated to be 1810 ± 30 AD. The mean rate of ice scour filling with 70 cm thick sediments from the moment of its formation is around 0.33 cm/year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics are widespread in coastal and marine environments, and sediments serve as a sink for microplastics. In this study, four sediment cores were collected from the Kuala Gula Mangrove area. The abundance of microplastics in mangrove sediments ranged from 25–130 items/kg dry weight. The highest abundance of microplastic was observed at the KG04 site near the mouth of the river. The number of microplastics by sampling site was significantly different (p < 0.01), with station KG04 having the highest fiber content. The dominant color of microplastics was blue, and the main shape was fiber. Rayon, cotton, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and azlon were observed from FT-IR, indicating that the potential sources of microplastic and fiber could come from household laundry wastewater. Microplastics tended to accumulate in deeper depths at KG01 (p < 0.01), whereas other stations showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). However, this study provides evidence that mangroves can be a trap for microplastics and can be used as baseline data for future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Osaka Bay adjacent to the Kyoto–Osaka–Kobe metropolitan area was affected by severe metal pollution during the twentieth century; yet little is known about the trace metal sources and pre-industrial human activities. We have determined the elemental concentrations and zinc stable isotope ratios (δ66Zn) in bulk sediments and the trace metal concentrations in chemical fractions of a 9-m-long sediment core from Osaka Bay. Our goals were (1) to reconstruct the historical trace metal contamination, and (2) to identify anthropogenic Zn sources and the solid phases of anthropogenic trace metals. The core provided a continuous environmental record of the last 2300 years based on radiocarbon dating of molluscan shells. Copper, Zn, and Pb showed an initial enrichment from the 1670s AD, which could be caused by human activities due to an increasing population. In agreement with previous findings, the trace metal concentrations slightly increased from the 1870s, strongly increased from the beginning of the twentieth century, and peaked around 1960 before environmental pollution control laws were enacted. Increasing trace metal concentrations in the acid-labile and reducible fractions obtained by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction procedure toward the surface indicate carbonates and Mn oxyhydroxides were the primary fractions for anthropogenic trace metals. The δ66Zn values (1) were constant until the 1940s, suggesting that the average δ66Zn of industrial sources was indistinguishable from that value of the natural background, (2) showed a slight decrease from the 1950s and remained constant until the present, and (3) fell in a binary mixing process between a lithogenic (~ + 0.27‰) and an anthropogenic endmember (~ + 0.17‰), the latter likely representing a mixture of various Zn sources such as road dust, tire wear, industrial effluents, and effluents from wastewater treatment plants. We conclude the combination of Zn stable isotopes together with chemical fractions obtained by the BCR method represents a promising approach to assess the trace metal sources and their potential mobility in sediment cores from anthropogenically affected coastal areas.

BACKGROUND The contamination of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments will lead to excessive levels of arsenic and mercury in the flora and fauna of the region, which will seriously affect the ecological environment of local vegetation and further affect the survival and safety of human beings. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to study the changes in the contents and spatial distribution of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments. OBJECTIVES To investigate the contents of arsenic and mercury in sediments, so as to provide basic information on the pollution of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments. METHODS The contents of arsenic and mercury in the sediments of the study area were determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS), and iron was selected as the normalized element to establish the environmental background values of arsenic and mercury elements in different intertidal sediments. The geoaccumulation index method and potential ecological hazard index method were used to evaluate the pollution status of arsenic and mercury in the study area. RESULTS Background value of arsenic content: Minjiang Estuary (2.90mg/kg) < Daliao Estuary (6.42mg/kg) < Yancheng Shoal in northern Jiangsu (11.02mg/kg) < Pearl River Estuary (19.19mg/kg). Background value of mercury content: maximum in Pearl River Estuary (0.08mg/kg), less in Daliao Estuary, Yancheng shoal and Minjiang Estuary (0.02mg/kg, 0.02mg/kg, 0.03mg/kg, respectively). The maximum values of background values of arsenic and mercury were both found in the Pearl River Estuary, and the minimum values were located in the Minjiang Estuary. The maximum values of arsenic and mercury of sediments were both found in the Pearl River Estuary, which were 42.90mg/kg and 0.287mg/kg, respectively, and were greater than the first class of Marine Sediment Quality Standard (arsenic: 20.0mg/kg; mercury: 0.2mg/kg). Arsenic belonged to no pollution and slight potential ecological hazards in the four intertidal sediments. Mercury was a medium potential ecological hazard in the Pearl River Estuary, and slight pollution or no pollution in the other three intertidal sediments. CONCLUSIONS The distribution of arsenic and mercury in the sediments of the four intertidal zones in the study area is characterized by "high in the south and low in the north". The arsenic and mercury contents in the intertidal sediments of Minjiang and Pearl River estuaries are more influenced by industrial and agricultural activities, thus causing the distribution features. The pollution of arsenic and mercury in the Pearl River Estuary is more serious than other intertidal areas, so it is urgent to strengthen the control of their pollution trends.

In this study, frequency and diversity of benthic foraminifera of 44 samples from a 14C dated sediment core were used to assess the effects of human activities on pollution and creating hypoxic conditions in coastal sediments of Bandar Abbas. The results showed that during the last century, the construction of coastal infrastructures and expansion of the city caused 5% elevation of sand input to the area. Variations of frequency and diversity of benthic foraminifera during the last decades also follows the above-mentioned changes. During the recent decades, the relative abundance of opportunistic hyaline taxa such as Cribroelphidium, Asterorotalia and Ammonia, and also conical species such as Bolivina and Bulimina which show higher ability to survive in polluted environments with lower oxygen content increased 100 to 200%. On the other hand, more than 150% reduction of species with thicker walls (Milliolids such as Massilina and Quinqueloculina) in this time show the intense environmental changes caused by human activities in coastal areas of Bandar Abbas. Altogether, significant increase in sewage runoff due to urban and industrial development of Bandar Abbas has had a great impact on the coastal ecosystem of the city, which should be mitigated by taking the right management decisions

The aim of this study is to analyze the recent sedimentation rate in the center of the Limoncocha lagoon, a Ramsar site in the Ecuadorian Amazon, using the 210Pb dating method and identifying the potentially toxic elements along a 50 cm sediment core. A strategy based on the application of three single and four integrated indices is used to evaluate trace element contamination with depth. Single indices show mainly As and Mo, and Cu, Ba, Cd, Ni, and Pb to a lesser extent, as responsible elements of a minor enrichment between −10 and −40 cm. The multielement slight pollution shows a mixture of potential contamination sources, probably due to agricultural, oil activities, and urban wastewater discharges. However, integrated indices applied, classify the complete core as without potential risk. The 210Pbexcess profile shows three differentiated sections. A surface section where new materials with lower concentrations have been found, probably due to the underground currents that connect the lagoon and the nearby Napo River; a central section where CF-CS model and mass accumulation rate calculations provide a sediment accumulation rate of 0.56 ± 0.03 cm y−1; finally, a deeper section with a constant 210Pbexces profile, showing sediment reworking probably due to local flooding's. The historical trends and inventory of organophosphate esters (OPEs) were investigated based on depth profiles of OPEs in sediment core collected from the tidal flat of the Liao River estuary in northeastern China. The concentration of ∑13OPEs in sediment core has increased continuously since records began, reaching a peak of 10.8 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) in the 1960s, then began to decline and fall to a low of 3.91 ng g-1 dw in the 1980s, before rising again and increasing to 20.4 ng g-1 dw in the 2000s. After a brief decline, It started to increase again and reached a peak of 27.0 ng g-1 dw in 2018. Tributyl-n-phosphate was found in each layer of the sediment core, accounting for 31.9 - 100% of ∑13OPEs. The fluxes of OPEs ranged from 46.5 to 105 ng cm-2 y-1 in the sediment layers deposited between 2007 and 2018. The inventory of OPEs in the sediment core was estimated to be 1541 ng cm-2. This work reports for the first time the historical contamination trends of OPEs in Chinese sediments, which is important for assessing the environmental risk of OPEs.

Abstract We investigated diatom assemblages for the last 19 ka in a piston core KY07-04 PC01 collected from the northern Okinawa Trough, East China Sea. Most of the diatom taxa in the Core KY07-04 PC01 were subtropical to temperate marine species throughout the core. Pronounced turnover of major diatom groups from periphytic to planktonic taxa occurred during deglaciation between 17 and 14 ka ago. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to early deglaciation, the representative taxa were Paralia spp., a periphytic diatom abundant in continental shelves of the modern East China Sea covering the Chinese Coastal Water. Relative abundances of Paralia spp. rapidly decreased during 15–14 ka ago, corresponding to sea-level rise, displaced by planktonic taxa such as Thalassionema. Thalassionema nitzschioides varieties living in subtropical water increased since 12 ka and have reached the present level at 8 ka ago, suggesting strengthening the influences of Kuroshio water in the northern East China Sea during the early to middle Holocene. Warm planktonic diatom taxa such as Nitzschia bicapitata also gradually increased from 12 to 8 ka ago. Near the core top, a sudden increase in N. bicapitata might relate to the intensifying Kuroshio during the latest Holocene.

In this study, the environmental fate of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tropical lake sediments and their potential sources have been discussed. 15 PAHs (i.e. ΣPAH) have been investigated in two lakes, namely Songkhla Lake (SKL) and Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake (NHL), which are located at the southern and north-eastern parts of Thailand, respectively. Since these two lakes are registered as important wetlands under the Ramsar convention (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization: UNESCO), the quantitative identification of potential contributors of PAHs is an inevitable analytical tool for launching an evidence-based policy. The ΣPAH concentrations observed in SKL and NHL sediments (n = 135) were in the range of 19.4–1,218 ng g−1 and 94.5–1,112 ng g−1, respectively. While the exponential decline of ΣPAH contents were detected in SKL sediments, NHL showed a trend of enhancing PAH contents with depth. The averaged benzo [a]pyrene (B [a]P) contents of surface sediments in both lakes were much below the value stipulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) guidelines for carcinogen risk assessment. Based on numerous multivariate statistical techniques coupled with source apportionment analysis, “biomass burning” and “anthropogenic activities” are two potential contributors of the PAHs detected in the study areas. To achieve the long-term conservation of nature with related ecosystem services and cultural values, it is therefore important to promote decision-making based on ecotoxicological studies of carcinogenic substances.

BACKGROUND: The contamination of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments will lead to excessive levels of arsenic and mercury in the flora and fauna of the region, which will seriously affect the ecological environment of local vegetation and further affect the survival and safety of human beings. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to study the changes in the contents and spatial distribution of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contents of arsenic and mercury in sediments, so as to provide basic information on the pollution of arsenic and mercury in intertidal sediments. METHODS: The contents of arsenic and mercury in the sediments of the study area were determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS), and iron was selected as the normalized element to establish the environmental background values of arsenic and mercury elements in different intertidal sediments. The geoaccumulation index method and potential ecological hazard index method were used to evaluate the pollution status of arsenic and mercury in the study area. Radioactivity levels of 210Pb and 226Ra were detected in a sediment core obtained using a multi-corer from the polymetallic nodule area inside the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), a contract area of the China Ocean Mineral Resources Association (COMR) in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The profile of excess 210Pb (210Pbex) shows that the specific activity of 210Pbex has three parts with different distributions at depths of 0–16 cm (I), 17–36 cm (II), and 37–48 cm (III). When the I section of nonlocal mixing was excluded, using a steady-state diffusion mode, the bioturbation coefficients of the core were estimated to be 24.2 cm2/a at 17–36 cm deep and 5.9 cm2/a at 37–48 cm deep, which were greater compared to previously published results. Microplastics are widespread in coastal and marine environments, and sediments serve as a sink for microplastics. In this study, four sediment cores were collected from the Kuala Gula Mangrove area. The abundance of microplastics in mangrove sediments ranged from 25–130 items/kg dry weight. The highest abundance of microplastic was observed at the KG04 site near the mouth of the river. The number of microplastics by sampling site was significantly different (p < 0.01), with station KG04 having the highest fiber content. The dominant color of microplastics was blue, and the main shape was fiber. Rayon, cotton, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and azlon were observed from FT-IR, indicating that the potential sources of microplastic and fiber could come from household laundry wastewater. Microplastics tended to accumulate in deeper depths at KG01 (p < 0.01), whereas other stations showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). However, this study provides evidence that mangroves can be a trap for microplastics and can be used as baseline data for future studies.

Hyperspectral imaging is a recent technology that has been gaining popularity in the geosciences since the 1990s, both in remote sensing and in the field or laboratory. Indeed, it allows the rapid acquisition of a large amount of data that are spatialized on the studied object with a low-cost, compact, and automatable sensor. This practical article aims to present the current state of knowledge on the use of hyperspectral imaging for sediment core analysis (core logging). To use the full potential of this type of sensor, many points must be considered and will be discussed to obtain reliable and quality data to extract many environmental properties of sediment cores. Hyperspectral imaging is used in many fields (e.g., remote sensing, geosciences and artificial intelligence) and offers many possibilities. The applications of the literature will be reviewed under five themes: lake and water body trophic status, source-to-sink approaches, organic matter and mineralogy studies, and sedimentary deposit characterization. Afterward, discussions will be focused on a multisensor core logger, data management, integrated use of these data for the selection of sample areas, and other opportunities. Through this practical article, we emphasize that hyperspectral imaging applied to sediment cores is still an emerging tool and shows many possibilities for refining the understanding of environmental processes. The quantification of microplastic (MP) pollution in rivers is often constrained by a lack of historical data on a multi-decadal scale, which hinders the evaluation of public policies. In this study, MP contents and trends were analyzed in dated sediment cores sampled upstream and downstream of a large metropolis, in environmental deposits that exhibited consistent sedimentation patterns from the 1980s to 2021. After a thorough sedimentological analysis, MPs were quantified in samples by micro Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (μFTIR imaging) and a density separation and organic matter digestion procedure. Microplastics recorded in the upstream core are relatively ubiquitous all along the dated sequence. The results also confirmed a sever increase of microplastics levels in the downstream core, by one order of magnitude, and an increase of polymer types. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene represent ubiquitous contamination and were predominant at the two stations, whereas polyvinyl chloride and polytetrafluoroethylene were suspected to be abundant at the downstream station, but were not detected at the upstream station. Their presence could be linked to local contamination from specific industrial sources that manufactured and utilized these polymers. Surprisingly, in the downstream station sediment has recorded a relative improvement in polymers associated with industrial sources since the 2000s and, to a lesser extent, for ubiquitous ones since the 2010s. This trend of mitigation diverges from that of global assessments, that assume uncontrolled MP pollution, and suggest that European Union wastewater policy and regulation on industrial discharges have positively influenced water quality, and certainly also on MPs. However, the accumulation of microplastics remains high in recent deposits and raises the emerging concern of the long-term management of these reservoirs. Lake sediments represent valuable and widely used archives for tracking environmental and biotic changes over time. Past aquatic communities are traditionally studied via morphological identification of the remains of organisms. However, molecular identification tools, such as DNA metabarcoding, have revolutionized the field of biomonitoring by enabling high-throughput and fast identification of organisms from environmental samples (e.g., sediments and soil). Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) metabarcoding, an approach to track the biodiversity of target organisms from sediment cores, spanning thousands of years, has been successfully applied in many studies. However, researchers seldom explore how well the signals from sedaDNA data correlate with the fossil records of target organisms. This information is essential to infer past environmental conditions and community changes of bioindicators when the increasingly popular molecular identification method, metabarcoding, is desired instead of a morphological identification approach. In this study, we explore the correlations of diatom valve records across the last ∼940 years with the diatom sedaDNA metabarcoding data from the same sediment core from lake Nam Co (Tibetan Plateau). Overall, the results from valve vs. sedaDNA data revealed concordant diatom richness as well as community patterns. However, several mismatches in the diatom taxonomic composition existed between the data sets. In general, sedaDNA data harbored much higher diatom diversity, but due to the lack of reference sequences in public databases, many molecular units (amplicon sequence variants) remained unclassified to lower taxonomic levels. As our study lake, Nam Co, is characterized by brackish water and alkaline pH, some likely cases for the observed taxonomic composition mismatches may be due to a valve dissolution issue. Nevertheless, significant drivers for the diatom richness and community structure largely corresponded between data sets. Both valve and sedaDNA data demonstrated similar breakpoints for historical diatom community shifts. A particularly strong shift in the diatom community structure occurred after ∼1950 CE, which may be associated with abrupt environmental changes on the Tibetan Plateau. Altogether, our study indicates that environmentally driven signals reflected by the diatom communities are successfully recovered via microfossil as well as molecular identification methods.

We investigated diatom assemblages for the last 19 ka in a piston core KY07-04 PC01 collected from the northern Okinawa Trough, East China Sea. Most of the diatom taxa in the Core KY07-04 PC01 were subtropical to temperate marine species throughout the core. Pronounced turnover of major diatom groups from periphytic to planktonic taxa occurred during deglaciation between 17 and 14 ka ago. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to early deglaciation, the representative taxa were Paralia spp., a periphytic diatom abundant in continental shelves of the modern East China Sea covering the Chinese Coastal Water. Relative abundances of Paralia spp. rapidly decreased during 15–14 ka ago, corresponding to sea-level rise, displaced by planktonic taxa such as Thalassionema. Thalassionema nitzschioides varieties living in subtropical water increased since 12 ka and have reached the present level at 8 ka ago, suggesting strengthening the influences of Kuroshio water in the northern East China Sea during the early to middle Holocene. Warm planktonic diatom taxa such as Nitzschia bicapitata also gradually increased from 12 to 8 ka ago. Near the core top, a sudden increase in N. bicapitata might relate to the intensifying Kuroshio during the latest Holocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to analyze the recent sedimentation rate in the center of the Limoncocha lagoon, a Ramsar site in the Ecuadorian Amazon, using the 210Pb dating method and identifying the potentially toxic elements along a 50 cm sediment core. A strategy based on the application of three single and four integrated indices is used to evaluate trace element contamination with depth. Single indices show mainly As and Mo, and Cu, Ba, Cd, Ni, and Pb to a lesser extent, as responsible elements of a minor enrichment between −10 and −40 cm. The multielement slight pollution shows a mixture of potential contamination sources, probably due to agricultural, oil activities, and urban wastewater discharges. However, integrated indices applied, classify the complete core as without potential risk. The 210Pbexcess profile shows three differentiated sections. A surface section where new materials with lower concentrations have been found, probably due to the underground currents that connect the lagoon and the nearby Napo River; a central section where CF-CS model and mass accumulation rate calculations provide a sediment accumulation rate of 0.56 ± 0.03 cm y−1; finally, a deeper section with a constant 210Pbexces profile, showing sediment reworking probably due to local flooding’s.

The historical sedimentary and evolutionary characteristics of persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors in typical regions of the Three Gorges Reservoir are scarcely studied. Herein, the 96-year data on contaminated sediment history were reconstructed using Caesium 137 isotope dating. Polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations in the involved sediment cores ranged from non-detected (ND) to 11.39 ng/g. The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from ND to 2075.20 ng/g and peaked in the 1970s owing to natural, agricultural and human activities. Further, phthalate esters (PAEs) and heavy metals (HMs) were detected at concentrations ranging from ND to 589.2 ng/g and 12.10-93.67 μg/g, respectively, with highest values recorded in the 1980s owing to rapid industrialisation and insufficient management during China's early reform and development stages. PAE and HM concentrations have increased in recent years, suggesting the need to focus on industrial and agricultural activities that have caused this impact. Phytoplankton shifts driven by the environmental changes can significantly impact the functioning of marine ecosystems. Analyzing time series data is an important way to understand how phytoplankton responds to environmental changes. Here, multiple indicators, including diatoms and dinoflagellate cysts, total organic matter, carbon and nitrogen isotopes, and biosilicate, were analyzed in the sediment core from the Central Bohai Sea. A 250-year palaeo-environment was reconstructed based on these indicators to examine the responses of phytoplankton assemblages to environmental events. Two significant shifting points were identified from the varying trend of diatoms and cysts. The first one occurred in the 1850s, when the Yellow River outlet relocated from the southern Yellow Sea to the Bohai Sea, as evidenced by finer grain size and lower sea salinity, causing a significant increase in total biomass and brackish species. The other shift happened in the 1970s, when significantly increased fertilizer usage and wastewater discharge led to more organic matter in the core and nitrogen enrichment in the water column up to the 2010s, causing a marked increase in total biomass, small-sized species, and harmful algal bloom species. Redundancy analysis between major community shifts and environmental factors indicated that the Yellow River input and nutrient enrichment had a more important role in regulating phytoplankton shifts than rising temperature after the 1970s.

Levinson‐Lessing Lake in northern Central Siberia is a sedimentary archive characterized by continuous, widely constant sedimentation at high rates (0.7 m ka−1 for >32 ka). This study provides the first evidence of the suitability of the lake′s sediments for paleomagnetic analyses using the 46‐m‐long core Co1401. Although the lowermost 8 m are disturbed, the upper 38 m of Co1401 provide the preconditions for an exceptional, high‐resolution paleomagnetic record located within the tangent cylinder of the inner core. High‐resolution analyses of magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization, and hysteresis parameters show largely uniform mineral magnetic properties. First‐order reversal curves indicate magnetite particles in pseudo‐single domain state are the main remanence carrier, supplemented by single‐domain particles, originating likely from magnetotactic bacteria. Above 6.7 m, the bulk magnetic mineralogy is slightly harder than below and initial greigite formation occurs. However, the main remanence carriers are still of detrital origin. Plain Language Summary: Levinson‐Lessing Lake in northern Central Siberia is a sedimentary archive characterized by continuous, widely constant sedimentation at high rates (0.7 m ka−1 for >32 ka). Because lakes with such long‐term constant properties are extremely rare throughout the Arctic Circle, the 46‐m‐long sediment core Co1401 recovered in 2017 provides an exceptional archive for climate and environmental changes of the past, but also for recordings of the evolution of the Earth's magnetic field (EMF) in this region. This study tested the suitability of Co1401 for paleomagnetic analyses using hundreds of samples and various analytical approaches. Although the lowermost 8 m are shown to be disturbed, the upper 38 m of Co1401 provide an unusual homogeneous mineral‐magnetic composition and properties. In the uppermost 6.7 m, the magnetic mineralogy is slightly different with greigite as additional component. The presence of this mineral can be a problem in paleomagnetic studies, as it overprints the primary information recorded in the archive. In this case, the formation is only initial and thus not an issue. Overall, Co1401 provide ideal preconditions for a paleomagnetic archive. Thus, an upcoming paleomagnetic‐based chronology will unlock this archive for future studies on paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, and the evolution of the EMF. Abstract Megathrust earthquakes of magnitude ~ 8 and ensuing large tsunamis occur along the Nankai and Suruga troughs, central Japan, with a recurrence interval of 90–270 years since an AD 684 Hakuho earthquake. Historical records show that the AD 1854 Ansei-Tokai earthquake caused coseismic uplift of ~ 1 m in coastal areas west of Suruga Bay, including the Shimizu Plain, east Shizuoka Prefecture. The 1361 Shohei Tokai earthquake was accompanied by coseismic uplift, but no evidence has been found to indicate uplift before the earthquake. This study examined sediment cores recovered from the coastal beach ridge in the Shimizu Plain using sedimentological and paleontological analyses and radiocarbon dating. We infer from the results that a relative sea-level fall of 1.6 m took place at AD 398–428. This coincides with archeological evidence suggesting the occurrence of a large earthquake in west Shizuoka Prefecture in AD 400. This combination of evidence indicates that the drop in sea level was caused by coseismic uplift associated with a megathrust rupture along the Suruga Trough, with a recurrence interval of ~ 500–1000 years. The results also indicate that a megathrust rupture occurred in the region from the Eastern Nankai Trough to the Suruga Trough at ca. AD 400.

Long marine sedimentary cores can be effective in paleo-climate reconstruction. The present research aims at analyzing the temporal variation of temperature as an important climate parameter and also variations in metal concentrations (As, Ba, Cd, Li, Mo, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, Sr, Zn, Fe, Ca, Al) of two long sedimentary cores at the Persian Gulf back to the Holocene. The obtained results revealed that the average elemental concentrations, apart from Ni, Sr, Ca and Na, are less than the shale value in both sedimentary cores. Moreover, the amount of varies from -1.31 versus 1.02 in Bushehr, to -1.69 versus 1.56 in Bandar Abbas sedimentary cores, respectively. In addition, change from -3.63 Vs -2.02 in Bushehr to -3.79 Vs -1.36 in Bandar Abbas sedimentary cores, respectively. Abrupt change in and can be seen in both sedimentary cores at two different periods (3000 to 5000 and 8000 to 9000 years ago). The maximum increase in temperature in sedimentary cores was at 0.4°C per 100 years in Bushehr and 0.01°C per 100 years in Bandar Abbas. The minimum temperature reached to -0.8°C per 100 years in Bushehr to -0.02°C per 100 years in Bandar Abbas sedimentary cores. Compared to the previously obtained temperatures in this research, there has been temperature changes in the last 40 years in the Persian Gulf, which indicates that the recent rate change in sea water temperature has been unprecedented.

Abstract Background In computed tomography (CT) quality assurance, alignment of image quality phantoms is crucial for quantitative and reproducible evaluation and may be improved by alignment correction. Our goal was to develop an alignment correction algorithm to facilitate geological sampling of sediment cores taken from a cold-water coral mount. Methods An alignment correction algorithm was developed and tested with a CT acquisition at 120 kVp and 150 mAs of an image quality phantom. Random translation (maximum 15 mm) and rotation (maximum 2.86°) were applied and ground-truth was compared to parameters determined by alignment correction. Furthermore, mean densities were evaluated in four regions of interest (ROIs) placed in the phantom low-contrast section, comparing values before and after correction to ground truth. This process was repeated 1000 times. After validation, alignment correction was applied to CT acquisitions (140 kVp, 570 mAs) of sediment core sections up to 1 m in length, and sagittal reconstructions were calculated for sampling planning. Results In the phantom, average absolute differences between applied and detected parameters after alignment correction were 0.01 ± 0.06 mm (mean ± standard deviation) along the x-axis, 0.11 ± 0.08 mm along the y-axis, 0.15 ± 0.07° around the x-axis, and 0.02 ± 0.02° around the y-axis, respectively. For ROI analysis, differences in densities were 63.12 ± 30.57, 31.38 ± 32.10, 18.27 ± 35.57, and 9.59 ± 26.37 HU before alignment correction and 1.22 ± 1.40, 0.76 ± 0.9, 0.45 ± 0.86, and 0.36 ± 0.48 HU after alignment correction, respectively. For sediment core segments, average absolute detected parameters were 3.93 ± 2.89 mm, 7.21 ± 2.37 mm, 0.37 ± 0.33°, and 0.21 ± 0.22°, respectively. Conclusions The alignment correction algorithm was successfully evaluated in the phantom and allowed a correct alignment of sediment core segments, thus aiding in sampling planning. Application to other tasks, like image quality analysis, seems possible.

A sedimentary record of the 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutants from Dongping Lake, north China, is presented in this study. The influence of regional energy structure changes for 2–6-ring PAHs was investigated, in order to assess their sources and the impact of socioeconomic developments on the observed changes in concentration over time. The concentration of the ΣPAH16 ranged from 77.6 to 628.0 ng/g. Prior to the 1970s, the relatively low concentration of ΣPAH16 and the average presence of 44.4% 2,3-ring PAHs indicated that pyrogenic combustion from grass, wood, and coal was the main source of PAHs. The rapid increase in the concentration of 2,3-ring PAHs between the 1970s and 2006 was attributed to the growth of the urban population and the coal consumption, following the implementation of the Reform and Open Policy in 1978. The source apportionment, which was assessed using a positive matrix factorization model, revealed that coal combustion was the most important regional source of PAHs pollution (>51.0%). The PAHs were mainly transported to the site from the surrounding regions by atmospheric deposition rather than direct discharge.

Bed sediments and a dated sediment core were collected upstream and downstream from the city of Lyon (France) to assess the spatial and temporal trends of contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in this section of the Rhône River. Upstream from Lyon, concentrations of total PFASs (ΣPFASs) in sediments are low (between 0.19 and 2.6 ng g−1 dry weight - dw), being characterized by a high proportion of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Downstream from Lyon, and also from a fluoropolymer manufacturing plant, ΣPFASs concentrations reach 48.7 ng g−1 dw. A gradual decrease of concentrations is reported at the coring site further downstream (38 km). Based on a dated sediment core, the temporal evolution of PFASs is reconstructed from 1984 to 2013. Prior to 1987, ΣPFASs concentrations were low (≤2 ng g−1 dw), increasing to a maximum of 51 ng g−1 dw in the 1990s and then decreasing from 2002 to the present day (∼10 ng g−1 dw). In terms of the PFAS pattern, the proportion of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) has remained stable since the 1980s (∼10%), whereas large variations are reported for carboxylic acids (PFCAs). Long chain- (C > 8) PFCAs characterized by an even number of perfluorinated carbons represent about 74% of the total PFAS load until 2005. However, from 2005 to 2013, the relative contribution of long chain- (C > 8) PFCAs with an odd number of perfluorinated carbons reaches 80%. Such changes in the PFAS pattern likely highlight a major shift in the industrial production process. This spatial and retrospective study provides valuable insights into the long-term contamination patterns of PFAS chemicals in river basins impacted by both urban and industrial activities. Despite high production and usage of parabens and bisphenols, little is known about their spatiotemporal distribution in the marine environment. In this study, we determined the concentrations of several parabens and their metabolites as well as bisphenol analogues in sediment collected from coastal areas of northern China. All sediment samples, including surface sediment and sediment cores, contained at least one of the parabens analyzed, and the total concentrations of parabens (ΣPBs; sum of six parabens) ranged from 1.37 to 24.2 ng/g dw (geometric mean: 3.30–6.09 g/g dw), which was comparable to or slightly higher than those found for the total concentrations of five detectable bisphenols (ΣBPAs; geometric mean: 2.18–4.61 ng/g dw). 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, a common metabolite of parabens, was found in all samples at concentrations in the range of 6.85–437 ng/g dw, which was one order of magnitude lower than those found for benzoic acid. Methyl-, ethyl-, and propyl-parabens were the predominant paraben analogues, collectively accounting for >88% of ΣPBs. Bisphenol A and bisphenol F were the two major bisphenols, collectively accounting for >86% of ΣBPAs. We also examined vertical profiles in concentrations of target analytes in sediment cores. The sediment core from the Shandong Peninsula showed a gradual increase in the concentrations of several parent and metabolic parabens as well as bisphenols during the past decade. Relatively higher concentrations of parabens and bisphenols were found in sediment cores collected from industrialized areas. Significant positive correlations were found among the concentrations of parabens in sediment, which suggested the existence of similar sources for these compounds. Overall, our findings suggest that the Bohai Sea coast is moderately contaminated with parabens and bisphenols in comparison to other coastal areas in China or elsewhere. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs), including petroleum biomarkers, were studied in four sediment cores collected around Deception and Penguin Islands, Antarctica. Total PAHs in Deception Island (DCP) samples ranged from 2.0 to 26.8 ng g−1, and in Penguin Island (PGI) varied between 13.2 and 60.3 ng g−1. Multiple sources of PAHs were verified in DCP, with petrogenic-derived compounds being predominant over the last 10 years. In PGI, PAHs related to natural contributions from the erosion of coal deposits were reported. Total AHs in DCP ranged from 4.5 to 19 μg g−1 and in PGI varied between 5.3 and 21.9 μg g−1. In DCP, the n -alkanes distribution pattern showed the presence of petroleum residues in the top sections and both terpanes and hopanes were detected, related to the use of fossil fuels for power generation and in different types of vessels. In PGI, the main source of n -alkanes was marine inputs and only terpanes were detected. The slight increase in hydrocarbon levels observed from 1980 onward in DCP was assumed to be due to the development of tourism in the region and to the scientific station activities. In PGI, anthropogenic-related hydrocarbons were detected in the recent sections and were linked to the development of tourism near the island, scientific activities and the increase in vessel traffic. In general, the concentrations of hydrocarbons found around both islands were comparable to those found in uncontaminated Antarctic regions. The vertical distribution, level of contamination, potential ecological risks, and historical fluxes of trace elements (Pb, As, and Hg) were evaluated from 210Pb-dated sediment cores in three different areas with gold mining impacts in northern Colombia: the Atrato River (AR), the Delicias Marsh (DM) and the Encaramada Marsh (EM). All cores spanned ∼100 years; the mass accumulation rates followed the order AR > DM > EM. The average trace elements concentrations in the sediment cores were: Pb 2.41 ± 0.72, As 0.65 ± 0.32, Hg 0.07 ± 0.02 μg g−1 in the Atrato River; Pb 23.49 ± 2.59, As 2.46 ± 0.88, Hg 0.10 ± 0.02 μg g−1 in the Delicias Marsh; and Pb 9.76 ± 4.18, As 2.44 ± 1.26, Hg 0.17 ± 0.06 μg g−1 in the Encaramada Marsh. Sediments are classified according to the contamination factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) as low to very highly contaminated. The Pollution load index (PLI) indicates environmental deterioration (PLI> 1), and the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicate that only Hg may produce adverse biological effects in the EM core. This study is an example of the reconstruction of temporal changes in pollution levels and impacts of potentially toxic elements caused by gold mining in remote ecosystems, which can be reproduced in other areas where environmental monitoring is scarce or non-existent. Jeddah is the most industrialized city on the west coast of Saudi Arabia and is under increasing influence of human activities. Heavy metals data were obtained from four near-coast Red Sea sediment cores in close proximity to Jeddah. Chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, and lead were analyzed from depth-resolved sections of each core via heavy acid digestion and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average concentrations of all four sites were 245.96 mg kg−1, 478.45 mg kg−1, 8506.13 mg kg−1, 251.82 mg kg−1, 623.09 mg kg−1, and 362.75 mg kg−1, respectively. The depth-resolved results showed that highest concentrations of Mn, Cu, and Pb were found in the top 15 cm of the core profile distributions compared to other depth sub-samples. Heavy metal concentrations in core sediments are increased near central Jeddah and have become higher in recent years. The results of enrichment factor calculations indicate little anthropogenic supply of Mn and Cr while Pb, Zn, and Cu show strong anthropogenic input. The Pollution Load Index was higher in the two sites closer to central Jeddah where power and desalination plants and wastewater release are known. This indicates that the area has suffered from heavy metal pollution compared to other non-industrialized sites in the Red Sea. Heavy metal contaminations due to anthropogenic activity should be taken into account to protect the Red Sea during future growth. The results of this work should be considered as a baseline for heavy metals monitoring in the sediments of the Red Sea coast near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Subterranean estuaries (STEs) have been recognized as important ecosystems for the exchange of materials between the land and sea, but the microbial players of biogeochemical processes have not been well examined. In this study, we investigated the bacterial and archaeal communities within 10 cm depth intervals of a permeable sediment core (100 cm in length) collected from a STE located at Gloucester Point (GP-STE), VA, United States. High throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and subsequent bioinformatics analyses were conducted to examine the composition, diversity, and potential functions of the sediment communities. The community composition varied significantly from the surface to a depth of 100 cm with up to 13,000 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) based on 97% sequence identities. More than 95% of the sequences consisted of bacterial OTUs, while the relative abundances of archaea, dominated by Crenarchaea, gradually increased with sediment core depth. Along the redox gradients of GP-STE, differential distribution of ammonia- and methane-oxidizing, denitrifying, and sulfate reducing bacteria was observed as well as methanogenic archaea based on predicted microbial functions. The aerobic-anaerobic transition zone (AATZ) had the highest diversity and abundance of microorganisms, matching with the predicted functional diversity. This indicates the AATZ as a hotspot of biogeochemical processes of STEs. The physical and geochemical gradients in different depths have attributed to vertical stratification of microbial community composition and function in the GP-STE.
