[Display omitted] Developing high active and stable cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to produce hydrogen is of vital significance in clean and sustainable energy development. This work has prepared a novel porous unreported MOF (Ni-DPT) as a precursor to successfully synthesize a non-noble bifunctional NiCoP/Ni 12 P 5 @NF electrocatalyst through doping strategy and interface engineering. This catalyst is constructed by layered self-supporting arrays with heterojunction interface and rich nitrogen-phosphorus doping. Structural characterizations and the density function theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interface effect of NiCoP/Ni 12 P 5 heterojunction can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst to optimize the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen (ΔG H*); simultaneously, the defect-rich layered nanoarrays can expose more active sites, shorten mass transfer distance, and generate a self-supporting structure for in-situ reinforcing the structural stability. As a result, this NiCoP/Ni 12 P 5 @NF catalyst exhibits favorable electrocatalytic performance, which simply needs overpotentials of 100 mV for HER and 310 mV for OER, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA·cm−2. The anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with this NiCoP/Ni 12 P 5 @NF as both anode and cathode catalysts can operate stably for 200 h at a current density of 100 mA·cm−2 with an insignificant voltage decrease. This work may provide some inspiration for the further rational design of inexpensive non-noble multifunctional electrocatalysts and electrode materials for water splitting to generate hydrogen. Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes containing various fillers and additives present an effective alternative to conventional dense polymer membranes, which often suffer from low permeance (flux) and the permeability–selectivity tradeoff. Alongside the development and utilization of numerous new polymers over the past few decades, diverse additives such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene oxides (GOs), and ionic liquids (ILs) have been integrated into the polymer matrix to enhance performance. However, achieving desirable interfacial compatibility between these additives and the host polymer matrix, particularly in TFC structures, remains a significant challenge. This review discusses recent advancements in TFC membranes for CO2/N2 separation, focusing on material structure, polymer–additive interaction, interface and separation properties. Specifically, we examine membranes operating under dry conditions to clearly assess the impact of additives on membrane properties and performance. The preparation of samples for instrumental analysis is the most essential and time-consuming stage of the entire analytical process; it also has the greatest impact on the analysis results. Concentrating the sample, changing its matrix, and removing interferents are often necessary. Techniques for preparing samples for analysis are constantly being developed and modified to meet new challenges, facilitate work, and enable the determination of analytes in the most comprehensive concentration range possible. This paper focuses on using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents in the most popular techniques for preparing liquid samples for analysis, based on liquid-solid extraction. An increase in interest in MOFs-type materials has been observed for about 20 years, mainly due to their sorption properties, resulting, among others, from the high specific surface area, tunable pore size, and the theoretically wide possibility of their modification. This paper presents certain advantages and disadvantages of the most popular sample preparation techniques based on liquid-solid extraction, the newest trends in the application of MOFs as sorbents in those techniques, and, most importantly, presents the reader with a summary, which a specific technique and MOF for the desired application. With the development of the nuclear industry，radioactive iodine has been identified as one of the most dangerous nuclear waste materials. The adsorption of radioactive iodine waste gas is also important for reducing nuclear pollution. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of porous crystal material formed by the self-assembly and interconnection of inorganic metal centers (such as metal ions or metal clusters) and bridged organic ligands. Due to their porosity and high specific surface area，MOFs are considered as ideal iodine adsorption materials. This article mainly reviews the research progress of MOFs materials in the field of iodine adsorption. Firstly，it briefly discusses the progress of different metal-centered MOFs in iodine adsorption in recent years. Secondly，it explores the adsorption capacity of MOFs composite materials for radioactive iodine. Finally，it looks forward to the future development trend of efficient radioactive iodine adsorption MOFs materials.

The special core–shell sample with the analogous mixture of MIL-125 and MIL-125-NH 2 function formed via ligand-defect reassembly as an efficient dual-functional photocatalyst for hydrogen production and NO removal. [Display omitted] The core–shell structure often exhibits unique properties, resulting in superior physical and chemical performance distinct from individual component in the field of photocatalysis. However, traditional prepared methods such as template synthesis and layer-by-layer self-assembly are relatively complex. Therefore, it is necessary to explore an efficient and expedient approach. Here, we have proposed a convenient method to gradually destroy the terephthalic acid (BDC) of MIL-125 from the outer to inner layers through hydrothermal stirring, followed by reassembling with photosensitive 2-amino-terephthalic acid (BDC-NH 2) into the exposed Ti-oxo clusters left by the BDC to create photocatalysts featuring a core–shell configuration. The special core–shell sample with the analogous mixture of MIL-125 and MIL-125-NH 2 function as a high-performance dual-functional photocatalyst for hydrogen generation and NO elimination. The optimal core–shell material (M-125-45-N) exhibits an outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 3.74 mmol·g−1·h−1 and an excellent photocatalytic NO removal rate of 70.15 %. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) value and solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency (STH) at specific wavelengths are also investigated. The non-radical pathway dominated by the electron transfer process (ETP) has gained considerable attention for the removal of organic contaminants in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. Rationally designing new catalysts with optimized composition and structural merits and further elucidating the enhanced removal mechanism are of great importance. In this work, we successfully synthesized a nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon encapsulated cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) on both sides of MXene nanosheets (MZPC) to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) from organic wastewater. The results indicated that BPA was degraded by 98.2 % in a mere 5 min using 0.1 g L-1 of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and 0.05 g L-1 of the optimized catalyst (MZPC-9), exhibiting an excellent pseudo-first-order kinetics rate constant (k = 1.485 min−1). Uniformly dispersed Co 2 P nanoparticles (approximately 9.4 nm, calculated using the Scherrer equation) on both sides of MXene exhibited enhanced binding affinity with PMS, forming the MZPC-9-PMS* metastable complexes with potent oxidative capability. The resultant MZPC-9-PMS* complexes induced the polymerization reaction of BPA and achieved 81 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal. Cancer treatment has witnessed the emergence of innovative stimuli-responsive nanotherapeutics aiming to overcome limitations associated with traditional drug delivery systems. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a subset of inorganic nanomaterials, are known for their porous structures and versatile applications in integrated cancer diagnosis and therapy. Their noteworthy features include customizable porosity, diverse chemical configurations, adjustable sizes and shapes, and the potential for surface functionalization. The study delved into conventional cancer therapies, provided an overview of MOFs, and discussed various MOF synthesis approaches. Furthermore, this review explored the development of stimuli-responsive MOFs to enhance targeted drug delivery and bioimaging, improving the overall efficacy of cancer treatment, and investigated the applications of stimuli-responsive multifunctional MOFs in nanostructures activated by factors influencing precise drug delivery and bioimaging in cancers. pH, light, ions, temperature, magnetic field, redox reactions, and ATP contribute to the precise control of drug delivery and bioimaging processes. Designed multifunctional MOFs exhibit characteristic changes in response to external and internal stimuli, proving advantageous for drug release and bioimaging. Surface-modified MOFs with responsive features demonstrate excellent biocompatibility with noncancerous cells, efficient drug-loading capabilities, and nanocarrier-mediated targeted drug delivery to cancerous cells. Therefore, the innovative strategy of inorganic nanoscale MOFs with responsive properties holds significant promise for targeted therapeutic drug delivery and imaging across diverse malignancies. Abstract The exclusion mechanism of food contaminants such as bisphenol A (BPA), Flavonoids (FLA), and Goitrin (GOI) onto the novel gallium–metal organic framework (MOF) and functionalized MOF with oxalamide group (MOF-OX) is evaluated by utilizing molecular dynamics (MD) and Metadynamics simulations. The atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis detected different types of atomic interactions between contaminant molecules and substrates. To assess this procedure, a range of descriptors including interaction energies, root mean square displacement, radial distribution function (RDF), density, hydrogen bond count (HB), and contact numbers are examined across the simulation trajectories. The most important elements in the stability of the systems under examination are found to be stacking π–π and HB interactions. It was confirmed by a significant value of total interaction energy for BPA/MOF-OX (− 338.21 kJ mol−1) and BPA/MOF (− 389.95 kJ mol−1) complexes. Evaluation of interaction energies reveals that L–J interaction plays an essential role in the adsorption of food contaminants on the substrates. The free energy values for the stability systems of BPA/MOF and BPA/MOF-OX complexes at their global minima reached about BPA/MOF = − 254.29 kJ mol−1 and BPA/MOF-OX = − 187.62 kJ mol−1, respectively. Nevertheless, this work provides a new strategy for the preparation of a new hierarchical tree-dimensional of the Ga-MOF hybrid material for the adsorption and exclusion of food contaminates and their effect on human health.

Detecting and removing pesticide and veterinary drug residues in agricultural products are important for ensuring food safety. Current methods for detecting pesticide residues are mainly relied on sophisticated instruments, which require long detection time and skilled operators, limiting their accessibility. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a hybrid material composed of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands. MOFs possess multiple functions such as adsorption enrichment, catalytic degradation, and fluorescent and electrochemical signal generation. Therefore, MOFs have great potential in rapidly detecting and removing pesticide and veterinary drug residues. This review introduces functionalities of MOFs: Enrichment and removal, catalytic degradation, fluorescence sensing, and electrochemical sensing, and then summarizes their applications for rapid detecting and removing pesticide and veterinary drug residues. Additionally, this article comprehensively analyzes the advantages and disadvantages about combining RGB analysis and portable monitoring devices with MOFs. Also, the challenges of applying MOFs to detecting and removing pesticide and veterinary drug residue are discussed. Overall, this paper provides a reference for developing techniques to rapidly detect and remove containments in agricultural products.

This paper reports on a scientometric analysis bolstered by human-in-the-loop, domain experts, to examine the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) research. Scientometric analyses reveal the intellectual landscape of a field. The study engaged MOF scientists in the design and review of our research workflow. MOF materials are an essential component in next-generation renewable energy storage and biomedical technologies. The research approach demonstrates how engaging experts, via human-in-the-loop processes, can help develop a comprehensive view of a field’s research trends, influential works, and specialized topics.

Abstract In the paper, high specific surface area (SSA) mono and bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) based on zinc and cobalt metals are successfully synthesized at room temperature using different ratios of Zn to Co salts as precursors and ammonium as a solvent to tailor the properties of the produced ZIF and optimize the efficiency of the particles in water treatment from dye and copper ions, simultaneously. The results declare that monometallic and bimetallic ZIF microparticles are formed using ammonium and the tuning of pore sizes and also increasing the SSA by inserting the Co ions in Zn-ZIF particles is accessible. It leads to a significant increase in the thermal stability of bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF and the appearance of an absorption band in the visible region due to the existence of Co in the bimetallic structures. The bandgap energies of bimetallic ZIFs are close to that of the monometallic Co-ZIF-8, indicating controlling the bandgap by Co ZIF. Furthermore, the ZIFs samples are applied for water treatment from copper ions (10 and 184 ppm) and methylene blue (10 ppm) under visible irradiation and the optimized multifunctional bimetallic Zn/Co ZIF is introduced as an admirable candidate for water treatment even in acidic conditions.

Additionally, the review critically examines the economic considerations, technical challenges, and environmental impacts associated with these adsorbents, offering a balanced perspective on their viability and sustainability. The solvothermal synthesis of LnCl3.nH2O with terephthalic acid (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, H2BDC) produced metal–organic frameworks (LnBDC), [Ln2(BDC)3(H2O)4]∞, where Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy. The materials obtained were characterized by a number of physico-chemical techniques. The influence of the ionic radius of the lanthanides on the microstructural characteristics of the Ln-MOFs was evaluated by performing Rietveld refinement. The MOFs obtained were tested as fluorescent sensors for numerous cations and anions in water. The highly luminescent EuBDC and TbBDC demonstrated multi-responsive luminescence sensing functions to detect Ag(I), Fe(III), Cr(III), and Cr(VI), which are essential for their environmental applications. By applying the non-linear Stern–Volmer equation, the fluorescent quenching mechanism was determined. ABSTRACT The applications of nanoscale zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF‐8) for antimicrobial drug delivery depend on the aqueous suspension stability of the ZIF‐8 which is influenced by their crystallinity, size, shape, aggregation, and surface chemistry. This study evaluated the stability of ZIF‐8 nanoparticles in terms of their aggregation and sedimentation characteristics. ZIF‐8 nanocomposites were synthesized with methanol via sonication at 30°C for 1 h. The effect of drying methods (oven drying at 80°C, and vacuum drying at 35°C), number of washing steps (0 = no wash, 1, 2, 3), and washing medium (washing with water and ethanol instead of methanol, and redispersion in water and ethanol) on the suspension stability was evaluated. The impact of added xanthan gum (XG) and poly‐L‐lysine (PL) as suspension media was also evaluated. ZIF‐8 nanoparticles were also synthesized using ethanol and suspended in PL. % transmittance and zeta potential were measured for freshly prepared ZIF‐8 suspensions in PL and after freeze‐drying and resuspending in water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were utilized for the assessment of the crystallinity, structure, and morphology of the samples. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion test against Escherichia coli. Dried methanol‐synthesized ZIF‐8 nanoparticles did not suspend in water; only the ZIF‐8 nanoparticles synthesized with reduced washing times and no drying treatment were resuspended in the water, XG and PL solutions. Instead, the ethanol‐synthesized ZIF‐8 nanoparticles were resuspended in water even after being washed three times and dried in a vacuum oven. SEM and TEM images and XRD patterns showed that alcohol can form well‐defined ZIF‐8 nanoparticles. FTIR spectra showed that ZIF‐8 had typical peaks of ZIF‐8 reported by others. Pathogenic bacteria pose significant threats to public health. Early and accurate detection of bacteria is crucial for infection control and prevention of outbreaks. This paper reviews recent advances in metal organic framework (MOF)-based methods for bacterial detection. MOFs are promising materials for biosensing due to their large surface areas, customizable properties, and ability to integrate various sensing capabilities. Several colorimetric and electrochemical detection techniques that utilize MOFs are discussed. Colorimetric assays combining MOFs with gold nanoparticles, peroxidase-mimicking activity, and aptamer recognition have achieved sensitive and specific detection of bacteria such as E. coli and S. aureus. Electrochemical biosensors integrating MOFs, antibodies, aptamers and quantum dots have also demonstrated low detection limits for various bacteria. Notably, techniques using MOF peroxidase-like activity coupled with magnetic separation or competitive binding assays show potential for point-of-care pathogen detection. Furthermore, optimization of MOF properties and integration within microfluidic platforms may lead to portable, low-cost and rapid methods suitable for on-site bacterial analysis in diverse settings. Continued exploration of MOF-based sensing strategies holds promise for improved bacteria monitoring and control of infectious diseases.

Abstract The strategy of designing heterogeneous porous catalysts by a post-modification method is a smart strategy to increase the catalytic power of desired catalysts. Accordingly, in this report, metal-organic frameworks based on titanium with acetic acid pending were designed and synthesized via post-modification method. The structure of the target catalyst has been investigated using different techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, Mapping, and N2 adsorption/desorption (BET/the BJH) the correctness of its formation has been proven. The catalytic application of Ti-based MOFs functionalized with acetic acid was evaluated in the preparation of new spiropyrans, and the obtained results show that the catalytic performance is improved by this modification. The strategy of designing heterogeneous porous catalysts through post-modification methods presents a sophisticated approach to enhancing the catalytic efficacy of desired catalysts. In this context, our study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on titanium, functionalized with acetic acid pendants, using a post-modification method. Various characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), mapping, and N2 adsorption/desorption (BET/BJH), were employed to investigate the structure and composition of the synthesized catalyst. These techniques collectively confirmed the successful formation and structural integrity of the target catalyst. The structure of the synthesized products was confirmed by melting point, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR and FT-IR techniques. Examining the general process of catalyst synthesis and its catalytic application shows that the mentioned modification is very useful for catalytic purposes. The presented catalyst was used in synthesis of a wide range of biologically active spiropyrans with good yields. The simultaneous presence of several biologically active cores in the synthesized products will highlight the biological properties of these compounds. The present study offers a promising insight into the rational design, synthesis, and application of task-specific porous catalysts, particularly in the context of synthesizing biologically active candidate molecules.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been the subject of extensive scientific investigation in the last three decades and, currently, they make up one of the types of compounds most studied for their potential application in a wide range of distinct catalytic processes. Pristine MOF compounds provide several intriguing benefits for catalytic applications, including large interior surface areas and high densities of active sites; high catalytic reaction rates per volume; post-synthesis modifications with complementary catalytic groups; and the ability for multiple functional groups to catalyze the reaction. For most large-scale catalytic applications, including those in fuel processing, gas emission reduction, and chemical synthesis, pristine MOFs often show limited stabilities and opportunities for regeneration at high temperatures. As a result, the real applications of MOFs in these technologies are likely to be constrained, and a controlled thermal modification to prepare MOF-derivative compounds has been applied to induce crystalline structural changes and increase the structural stability of the MOFs, enhancing their potential applicability in more severe catalytic processes. Recent advances concerning the use of this strategy to boost the catalytic potential of MOF-derivative compounds, particularly for stable Zr-based MOFs, are outlined in this short review article.

Due to the increasingly severe global warming trend, the reduction of CO2 emission and carbon capture have attracted growing interest. The separation of CO2 from gas mixtures, especially from point source and the atmosphere, is considered as one of the most important strategies for mitigating climate change. Porous metal–organic nanomaterials (PNMs), including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) have been extensively investigated in the fields of carbon capture, catalysts, sensors, biomedical imaging and gas storage. Their inherent pores, diverse surface function groups and potential modification possiblities make them competitive carbon capture materials. This review will introduce detailed scientific and technological advancements in PNMs and explain their fitness for carbon capture and separation, followed by the fabrication and application of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with PNMs. The current challenges appreared and solutions to improve the MMMs’ CO2 separation performance will also be stressed.

In recent years, with advancements in nanotechnology and materials science, new enzyme immobilization strategies based on nanomaterials have continuously emerged. These strategies have shown significant effects on enhancing enzyme catalytic performance and stability due to their high surface area, good chemical stability, and ease of enzyme binding, demonstrating tremendous potential for industrial applications. Those methods that can rapidly synthesize nanocarriers under mild conditions allow for the one-step synthesis of nanocarriers and enzyme complexes, thereby exhibiting advantages such as simplicity of process, minimal enzyme damage, short processing times, and environmental friendliness. This paper provides an overview of simultaneous enzyme immobilization strategies accompanied by nanocarrier synthesis, including organic–inorganic hybrid nano-flowers (HNFs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and conductive polymers (CPs). The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Abstract Aluminum corrosion inhibitors “{[CuI (CN)2(phen) CuII (CN)2(phen)]5H2O},(MOF1) and {[CuI(CN)2(phen)CuII(CN)2(phen)]5H2O}@TiO2 (MOF1@TiO2) were studied in one molar HCl solution”. The ML results for three different temperatures (25–45 °C) were compared with the results of PDP and EIS analyses. The adsorption of inhibitors on Al surfaces has been calculated and discussed by a Langmuir isotherm. The inhibitors that were created showed great effectiveness, with a noticeable increase in their inhibitory efficiency as the dosage was raised and the temperature was lowered. Inhibition efficiency each amounted to 88.6%, 84.5% at 400 ppm and 25 °C for MOF1@TiO2 and MOF1, respectively. Analyzing the polarization curves of synthesized inhibitors revealed that they were mixed-type inhibitors. Al was found to be surface inhibited when coated with a thin film of inhibitors, and “Al's surface morphology was assessed by different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscope (AFM)”. “Theoretical models like quantum chemical and molecular dynamics simulation authenticated the experimental observation”. The preparation of samples for instrumental analysis is the most essential and time-consuming stage of the entire analytical process; it also has the greatest impact on the analysis results. Concentrating the sample, changing its matrix, and removing interferents are often necessary. Techniques for preparing samples for analysis are constantly being developed and modified to meet new challenges, facilitate work, and enable the determination of analytes in the most comprehensive concentration range possible. This paper focuses on using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents in the most popular techniques for preparing liquid samples for analysis, based on liquid-solid extraction. An increase in interest in MOFs-type materials has been observed for about 20 years, mainly due to their sorption properties, resulting, among others, from the high specific surface area, tunable pore size, and the theoretically wide possibility of their modification. This paper presents certain advantages and disadvantages of the most popular sample preparation techniques based on liquid-solid extraction, the newest trends in the application of MOFs as sorbents in those techniques, and, most importantly, presents the reader with a summary, which a specific technique and MOF for the desired application. To make a tailor-made and well-informed choice as to the extraction technique.

The depletion of reliable energy sources and the environmental and climatic repercussions of polluting energy sources have become global challenges. Hence, many countries have adopted various renewable energy sources including hydrogen. Hydrogen is a future energy carrier in the global energy system and has the potential to produce zero carbon emissions. For the non-fossil energy sources, hydrogen and electricity are considered the dominant energy carriers for providing end-user services, because they can satisfy most of the consumer requirements. Hence, the development of both hydrogen production and storage is necessary to meet the standards of a "hydrogen economy". The physical and chemical absorption of hydrogen in solid storage materials is a promising hydrogen storage method because of the high storage and transportation performance. In this paper, physical hydrogen storage materials such as hollow spheres, carbon-based materials, zeolites, and metal–organic frameworks are reviewed. We summarize and discuss the properties, hydrogen storage densities at different temperatures and pressures, and the fabrication and modification methods of these materials. The shape and topology of pores have significant impacts on the gas storage properties of nanoporous materials. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal materials with which to tailor to the needs of specific applications, due to properties such as their tunable structure and high specific surface area. It is, therefore, particularly important to develop descriptors that accurately identify the topological features of MOF pores. In this work, a topological data analysis method was used to develop a topological descriptor, based on the pore topology, which was combined with the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to predict the adsorption performance of MOFs for methane/ethane/propane. The final results show that this descriptor can accurately predict the performance of MOFs, and the introduction of the topological descriptor also significantly improves the accuracy of the model, resulting in an increase of up to 17.55% in the R2 value of the model and a decrease of up to 46.1% in the RMSE, compared to commonly used models that are based on the structural descriptor. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between the performance and structure of MOFs and provide useful guidelines and strategies for the design of high-performance separation materials. Rationally designed multiporphyrinic architectures for boosting photodynamic therapy (PDT) have attracted significant attentions recently years due to their great potential for light‐mediated generation of reactive oxygen species. However, there is still a gap between the structure design and their PDT performance for biomedical applications. This tutorial review provides a historical overview on (i) the basic concept of PDT for deeply understanding the porphyrin‐mediated PDT reactions, (ii) developing strategies for constructing porphyrinic architectures, like nanorings, boxes, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent‐organic frameworks (COFs), vesicles, etc., where we classified into the following three categories: multiporphyrin arrays, porphyrinic frameworks, and others porphyrin assemblies, (iii) the various application scenarios for clinical cancer therapy and antibacterial infection. Also, the existing challenges and future perspectives on the innovation of porphyrinic architectures for clinical PDT applications are mentioned in the end section. Moreover, the porphyrinic nanomaterials with atomically precise architectures provide an ideal platform for investigating the relationship between structures and PDT outputs, design of personalized "all‐in‐one" theranostic agents, and the popularization and application in wider biomedical fields. Despite exhaled human breath having enabled noninvasive diabetes diagnosis, selective acetone vapor detection by fluorescence approach in the diabetic range (1.8–3.5 ppm) remains a long‐standing challenge. A set of water‐resistant luminescent metal‐organic framework (MOF)‐based composites have been reported for detecting acetone vapor in the diabetic range with a limit of detection of 200 ppb. The luminescent materials possess the ability to selectively detect acetone vapor from a mixture comprising nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and alcohol vapor, which are prevalent in exhaled breath. It is noteworthy that this is the first luminescent MOF material capable of selectively detecting acetone vapor in the diabetic range via a turn‐on mechanism. The material can be reused within a matter of minutes under ambient conditions. Industrially pertinent electrospun luminescent fibers are likewise fabricated alongside various luminescent films for selective detection of ultratrace quantities of acetone vapor present in the air. Ab initio theoretical calculations combined with in situ synchrotron‐based dosing studies uncovered the material's remarkable hypersensitivity toward acetone vapor. Finally, a freshly designed prototype fluorescence‐based portable optical sensor is utilized as a proof‐of‐concept for the rapid detection of acetone vapor within the diabetic range. Thin films of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) on polymer substrates and MOF/polymer mixed-matrix membranes play crucial roles in advancing the field of gas separation membranes. In this paper, we present a novel method for the direct formation of continuous ZIF-8 crystal films on a polymer substrate doped with Zn²+. Our approach involves ion exchange between the doped zinc ions within the substrate and sodium ions in the presence of a CH3COONa additive, as well as interfacial complexation with eluted zinc ions and 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIM). The key factors affecting the formation of ZIF-8 crystals on the substrate were the concentrations of CH3COONa and 2-MeIM. A time-course analysis revealed that the nucleation rate during the early stages of the reaction significantly affected the surface morphology of the resulting ZIF-8 crystal films. Specifically, a higher nucleation rate led to the formation of continuous small ZIF-8 crystal films. This innovative approach enables the fabrication of densely packed, uniform ZIF-8 crystal films. Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a unique class of porous materials with tremendous potential for diverse applications. A key factor contributing to their versatility is their ability to precisely introduce functional groups at specific positions within pores and crystals. This review explores two prominent strategies for achieving the positional functionalization of MOFs: post‐synthetic ligand exchange (PSE) and MOF‐on‐MOF. In PSE, the existing ligands within solid‐state MOFs can be selectively replaced by the desired functional groups in solution through ligand dynamics. This invasive functionalization provides a flexible approach to fine‐tuning the surface of the MOFs with the target functionality. Conversely, MOF‐on‐MOF strategies are additive methodologies involving the controlled growth of one MOF layer onto another. The functionality of the core and shell (or surface) can be independently controlled. This review critically examines the examples, strengths, limitations, and applications of these strategies, emphasizing their significance in advancing the field of MOF functionalization and paving the way for tailored multifunctional materials with precise and specific properties.

Microbial infections, particularly those caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens, pose a critical global health threat. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), porous crystalline structures built from metal ions and organic linkers, initially developed for gas adsorption, have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics. This review, covering research up to 2023, explores the potential of MOFs and MOF-based materials as broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites. It delves into the historical context of antimicrobial agents, recent advancements in MOF research, and the diverse synthesis techniques employed for their production. Furthermore, the review comprehensively analyzes the mechanisms of action by which MOFs combat various microbial threats. By highlighting the vast potential of MOFs, their diverse synthesis methods, and their effectiveness against various pathogens, this study underscores their potential as a novel solution to the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with their large surface area and numerous active sites have attracted significant research attention. Recently, the application of MOFs for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants has provided effective solutions to address diverse environmental problems. In this review, the latest progress in MOF-based removal and degradation of organic pollutants is summarized according to the different roles of MOFs in the removal reaction systems, such as physical adsorbents, enzyme-immobilization carriers, nanozymes, catalysts for photocatalysis, photo-Fenton and sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). Finally, the opportunities and challenges of developing advanced MOFs for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed and anticipated. Graphical Abstract

The growing presence of diverse pollutants, including heavy metals, organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, and emerging contaminants, poses significant environmental and health risks. Traditional methods for pollutant removal often face limitations in efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in innovative adsorbents designed to address these challenges. It explores a wide array of non-conventional adsorbent materials, such as nanocellulose, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene-based composites, and biochar, emphasizing their sources, structural characteristics, and unique adsorption mechanisms. The review discusses adsorption processes, including the basic principles, kinetics, isotherms, and the factors influencing adsorption efficiency. It highlights the superior performance of these materials in removing specific pollutants across various environmental settings. The practical applications of these adsorbents are further explored through case studies in industrial settings, pilot studies, and field trials, showcasing their real-world effectiveness. Additionally, the review critically examines the economic considerations, technical challenges, and environmental impacts associated with these adsorbents, offering a balanced perspective on their viability and sustainability. The conclusion emphasizes future research directions, focusing on the development of scalable production methods, enhanced material stability, and sustainable regeneration techniques. This comprehensive assessment underscores the transformative potential of innovative adsorbents in pollutant remediation and their critical role in advancing environmental protection.

The solvothermal synthesis of LnCl3.nH2O with terephthalic acid (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, H2BDC) produced metal–organic frameworks (LnBDC), [Ln2(BDC)3(H2O)4]∞, where Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy. The materials obtained were characterized by a number of physico-chemical techniques. The influence of the ionic radius of the lanthanides on the microstructural characteristics of the Ln-MOFs was evaluated by performing Rietveld refinement. The MOFs obtained were tested as fluorescent sensors for numerous cations and anions in water. The highly luminescent EuBDC and TbBDC demonstrated multi-responsive luminescence sensing functions to detect Ag(I), Fe(III), Cr(III), and Cr(VI), which are essential for their environmental applications. By applying the non-linear Stern–Volmer equation, the fluorescent quenching mechanism was determined. The stability of the obtained materials in water in a wide pH range (acidity pH = 4 and alkalinity pH = 9 solutions) was confirmed.

A non-absorbable therapeutic candidate for the treatment of hyperammonemia has been identified and characterized. Conventional approaches to reducing ammonia concentration in the blood and colon include acidifying the colon, inhibiting the bacterial production of ammonia, and activation of the urea cycle. Addressing gaps in the literature around therapeutic ammonia adsorption, this study established assays for ammonia uptake from both NH4OH and NH4Cl solutions as well as interference and selectivity for potassium absorption. Performance was characterized for a large number and variety of materials, spanning zeolites, ion-exchange resins, metallopolymers, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and polymeric carboxylic acids. The latter class showed low potassium capacity (poly(acrylic acid): 10 mg/g, poly(maleic-co-acrylic acid): 4 mg/g) and a therapeutically relevant depression of pH in buffered simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) (poly(acrylic acid): −2.01 and poly(maleic-co-acrylic acid): −3.23) compared to lactulose (−3.46), an approved therapeutic for hyperammonemia that works by acidifying the colon. In the polymeric organic acids evaluated, pH depression correlated well with pKa and acid site density. Additionally, this class of candidates should avoid the undesirable side effects of lactulose, such as the potential for hyperglycemia in diabetic patients and incompatible use with galactosemic patients.

Through task-specific design and synthesis of mesoporous catalysts, we introduce a novel metal–organic framework serving as a heterogeneous catalyst. In this study, Co(BDC-NH(CH2)3SO3H was meticulously prepared through the condensation reaction of 1,4-butane sultone and Co(BDC-NH2) utilizing a post-modification method. The thorough examination of these parameters ensures a detailed understanding of the catalyst's properties. Subsequently, the catalytic activity was explored in the synthesis of chromeno[4,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives employing a cooperative vinylogous anomeric-based oxidation mechanism. This research not only presents a new and efficient catalyst but also contributes valuable insights into the synthesis of biologically relevant chromeno[4,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives.

The rising incidence of malignancies presents a significant global challenge for healthcare professionals. Current cancer treatment strategies often result in suboptimal survival rates and reduced quality of life for patients. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive approach with minimal cumulative toxicity, broad applicability, and potential for combination therapies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a versatile platform for PDT due to their unique composition and adjustable structure, enabling them to serve as a photosensitizers (PS) or carriers for therapeutic agents. By harnessing the potential of MOFs-based nanomaterials, PDT can be tailored to achieve multifunctionality. This review aims to explore strategies that enhance the effectiveness of PDT through optimizing the three essential components: PS, oxygen supply, and light activation. Specifically, we discuss approaches to boost reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, address challenges posed by hypoxic tumor environments, and develop synergistic therapies. Furthermore, we highlight potential clinical applications of nano-platforms in PDT and examine the associated challenges.

Chlorination is a versatile technique to combat water-borne pathogens. Over the last years, there has been continued research interest to abate the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). To prevent hazardous DBPs in drinking water, it is decided to diminish organic precursors, among which humic acids (HA) resulting from the decomposition and transformation of biomass. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently received tremendous attention in water purification. Herein, customized ZIF-67 MOFs possessing various physicochemical properties were prepared by changing the cobalt source. The HA removal by ZIF-67-Cl, ZIF-67-OAc, ZIF-67-NO3, and ZIF-67-SO4 were 85.6%, 68.9%, 86.1%, and 87.4%, respectively, evidently affected by the specific surface area. HA uptake by ZIF-67-SO4 indicated a removal efficiency beyond 90% in 4 90% after 60 min mixing the solution with 0.3 g L−1 ZIF-67-SO4. Notably, an acceptable removal performance (∼72.3%) was obtained even at HA concentrations up to 100 mg L−1. The equilibrium data fitted well with the isotherm models in the order of Langmuir> Hill > BET> Khan > Redlich-Peterson> Jovanovic> Freundlich > and Temkin. The maximum adsorption capacity qm for HA uptake by ZIF-67-SO4 was 175.89 mg g−1, well above the majority of adsorbents. The pseudo-first-order model described the rate of HA adsorption by time. In conclusion, ZIF-67-SO4 presented promising adsorptive properties against HA. Further studies would be needed to minimize cobalt leaching from the ZIF-67-SO4 structure and improve its reusability safely, to ensure its effectiveness and the economy of adsorption system.

Advanced oxidation (AOPs) utilizing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are efficient processes for the degradation of organic pollutants. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), graphene oxide (GO), MIL-101(Fe), and their composite structures. The nanomaterials were applied as catalysts by PMS for triclosan (TCS) decomposition. The maximum removal rates of TCS were 49.29, 66.13, 84.04, 89.73, and 100% for PMS alone, CoFe2O4, GO, MIL-101(Fe), and CoFe2O4/MIL-101(Fe)/GO with PMS, respectively. Metal ions leaching declined in CoFe2O4/MIL-101(Fe)/GO/PMS compared with others. Hence, the composite nanomaterials appear to be effective catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants by PMS activation.

In this review, the latest progress in MOF-based removal and degradation of organic pollutants is summarized according to the different roles of MOFs in the removal reaction systems, such as physical adsorbents, enzyme-immobilization carriers, nanozymes, catalysts for photocatalysis, photo-Fenton and sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). ZIF-67/CNF/PANI composite has been prepared by simple hydrothermal method at room temperature and successfully applied as an electrochemical sensor in the measurement of trace-level dopamine. The composite has been characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Elemental analysis, and BET surface area studies. The composite exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards dopamine due to the synergistic effect between ZIF-67 and CNF/PANI materials. It showed an excellent peak current response in the measurement of dopamine in the presence of interferants such as uric acid, ascorbic acid, glucose, and some inorganic ions. The proposed sensor showed wide linearity in the concentration range, 3–160 µM with a limit of detection, 0.047 µM and sensitivity of 10.8 μA mM−1 cm−2. The developed sensor has been successfully utilized to measure dopamine levels from dopamine hydrochloride injection and blood serum samples to demonstrate the practical utility of the sensor.
