Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) synergizes the retrieval of pertinent data with the generative capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), ensuring that the generated output is not only contextually relevant but also accurate and current. We introduce XRAG, an open-source, modular codebase that facilitates exhaustive evaluation of the performance of foundational components of advanced RAG modules. These components are systematically categorized into four core phases: pre-retrieval, retrieval, post-retrieval, and generation. We systematically analyse them across reconfigured datasets, providing a comprehensive benchmark for their effectiveness. As the complexity of RAG systems continues to escalate, we underscore the critical need to identify potential failure points in RAG systems. We formulate a suite of experimental methodologies and diagnostic testing protocols to dissect the failure points inherent in RAG engineering. Subsequently, we proffer bespoke solutions aimed at bolstering the overall performance of these modules. Our work thoroughly evaluates the performance of advanced core components in RAG systems, providing insights into optimizations for prevalent failure points.

Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Lambda polarization can be measured through its self-analyzing weak decay, making it an ideal candidate for studying spin effects in high energy scatterings. In lepton-nucleon deeply inelastic scatterings (DIS), Lambda polarization measurements can probe the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the polarized fragmentation functions (FFs). One of the most promising facilities for high-energy nuclear physics research is the proposed Electron-ion collider in China (EicC). As a next-generation facility, EicC is set to propel our understandings of nuclear physics to new heights. In this article, we study the Lambda production in electron-proton collision at EicC energy, in particular Lambda's reconstruction based on the performance of the designed EicC detector. In addition, taking spontaneous transverse polarization as an example, we provide a theoretical prediction with statistical projection based on one month of EicC data taking, offering valuable insights into future research prospects., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We estimate the impact of asymmetry measurements of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) with transversely polarized proton beam taken at a future Electron Ion Collider in China (EicC) on the extraction of Compton Form Factors (CFFs). The CFFs extracted from an analysis based on artificial neural-network approach are reweighted by means of pseudo-data generated in the expected kinematic region of EicC. We find a remarkable improvement in the extraction of CFF $\textbf{Im} {\mathcal E}$, especially at the range of parton momentum fraction $x \sim$ 0.01, thus hinting for a future experimental probe of the parton orbital angular momentum. The 2021-22 High-Energy Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. ``Snowmass 2021'') was organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Snowmass 2021 was a scientific study that provided an opportunity for the entire U.S. particle physics community, along with its international partners, to identify the most important scientific questions in High Energy Physics for the following decade, with an eye to the decade after that, and the experiments, facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. This Snowmass summary report synthesizes the lessons learned and the main conclusions of the Community Planning Exercise as a whole and presents a community-informed synopsis of U.S. particle physics at the beginning of 2023. This document, along with the Snowmass reports from the various subfields, will provide input to the 2023 Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) subpanel of the U.S. High-Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), and will help to guide and inform the activity of the U.S. particle physics community during the next decade and beyond., Comment: 75 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Detector instrumentation is at the heart of scientific discoveries. Cutting edge technologies enable US particle physics to play a leading role worldwide. This report summarizes the current status of instrumentation for High Energy Physics (HEP), the challenges and needs of future experiments and indicates high priority research areas. The Snowmass Instrumentation Frontier studies detector technologies and Research and Development (R&D) needed for future experiments in collider physics, neutrino physics, rare and precision physics and at the cosmic frontier. It is divided into more or less diagonal areas with some overlap among a few of them. Charged lepton flavor violation has long been recognized as unambiguous signature of New Physics. Here we describe the physics capabilities and discovery potential of New Physics models with charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector as its experimental signature. Current experimental status from the B-Factory experiments BaBar, Belle and Belle II, and future prospects at Super Tau Charm Factory, LHC, EIC and FCC-ee experiments to discover New Physics via charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector are discussed in detail. It is already known from phenomenological studies that in exclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclei there appears to be a scaling behavior of vector meson production cross section in both nuclear mass number, $A$, and photon virtuality, $Q^{2}$, which is strongly modified due to gluon saturation effects. In this work we continue those studies in a realistic setup based upon using the Monte Carlo event generator Sar{\em t}re. We make quantitative predictions for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider, focusing on this $A$ and $Q^{2}$ scaling picture, along with establishing a small region of squared momentum transfer, $t$, where there are signs of this scaling that may potentially be observed at the EIC. Our results are represented as pseudo-data of vector meson production diffractive cross section and/or their ratios, which are obtained by parsing data collected by the event generator through smearing functions, emulating the proposed detector resolutions for the future EIC., Comment: 26 pages and 18 figures

We provide a comprehensive overview of transversely polarized $\Lambda$ production at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In particular, we study both spontaneous transverse $\Lambda$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer within the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) factorization region. To describe spontaneous $\Lambda$ polarization, we consider the contribution from the TMD Polarizing Fragmentation Function (TMD PFF). Similarly, we study the contribution of the transverse spin transfer originating from the transversity TMD Fragmentation Function (TMD FF). We provide projections for the statistical uncertainties in the corresponding spin observables at the future EIC. Using these statistical uncertainties, we characterize the role that the future EIC will play in constraining these distributions. We perform an impact study in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process for spontaneous $\Lambda$ polarization with a proton beam. We find that the projected experimental data leads to a significant decrease in the uncertainties for the $u$ and sea TMD PFFs. Furthermore, to access the impact of the EIC on the transversity TMD FF, we perform the first extraction of the transversity TMD FF from the recent COMPASS data. We compare the statistical uncertainties of the future EIC with the theoretical uncertainties from our extraction and find that the EIC could have a significant role in constraining this distribution. Finally, we also provide projections for both spontaneous $\Lambda$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer inside the jets in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC., Comment: 19 pages 15 figures
