In the face of labour-force ageing, understanding labour-market characteristics and the health status of middle-aged and older workers is important for sustainable social and economic development. Self-rated health (SRH) is a widely-used instrument to detect health problems and predict mortality. This study investigated labour-market characteristics that may have an impact on the SRH among Chinese middle-aged and older workers, using data from the national baseline wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytical sample included 3864 individuals who at the time held at least one non-agricultural job. Fourteen labour-market characteristics were clearly defined and investigated. Multiple logistic regression models of the associations of each labour-market characteristic with SRH were estimated. Seven labour-market characteristics were associated with higher odds of poor SRH when controlled for age and sex. Employment status and earned income remained significantly associated with poor SRH, when controlling for all the sociodemographic factors and health behaviours. Doing unpaid work in family businesses is associated with 2.07 (95% CI, 1.51–2.84) times probability of poor SRH, compared with employed individuals. Compared with more affluent individuals (highest quintile of earned income), people in the fourth and fifth quintiles had 1.92 (95% CI, 1.29–2.86) times and 2.72 (95% CI, 1.83–4.02) times higher chance, respectively, of poor SRH. In addition, residence type and region were important confounders. Measures improving adverse working conditions should be taken to prevent future risk of impaired health among the Chinese middle-aged and older workforce.

bRationale:/bDysregulation of signaling that governs self-renewal and differentiation of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) is a major cause of colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation and progression.bMethods:/bqRT-PCR, western blotting,iin situ/ihybridization, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence assays were used to detect the expression levels of MEX3A, KLF4 and E2F3 in CRC tissues. The biological functions of MEX3A were studied usingiMex3a/iknockout (KO) and intestinal epithelium specific conditional knockout (cKO) mice, AOM-DSS mouse colorectal tumor model, Apc floxed mouse tumor model and intestinal and tumor organoids. Transcriptomic RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), RNA crosslinking immunoprecipitation (CLIP) and luciferase reporter assays were performed to explore the molecular mechanisms of MEX3A.bResults:/bRNA-binding protein MEX3A, a specific ISC marker gene, becomes ectopically upregulated upon CRC and its levels negatively correlate with patient survival prognosis. MEX3A functions as an oncoprotein that retains cancer cells in undifferentiated and proliferative status and it enhances their radioresistance to DNA damage. Mechanistically, a rate limiting factor of cellular proliferation E2F3 induces MEX3A, which in turn activates WNT pathway by directly suppressing expression of its pro-differentiation transcription factor KLF4. Knockdown ofiMEX3A/iwith siRNA or addition of KLF4 agonist significantly suppressed tumor growth both by increasing differentiation status of cancer cells and by suppressing their proliferation.bConclusions:/bIt identifies E2F3-MEX3A-KLF4 axis as an essential coordinator of cancer stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, representing a potent new druggable target for cancer differentiation therapy.

Metal-free activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for degrading organic pollutants in water has received increasing attention because it can prevent secondary pollution. However, most of the catalysts that are efficient are derived from non-renewable fossil resources, are very expensive and have complex preparation processes. Also, the emerging non-radical mechanism is still unclear. Herein, 3D sucrose-derived N-doped carbon xerogels (NCXs) were synthesized by a simple and sustainable hydrothermal process and then employed as novel metal-free PDS activators to degrade organic pollutants. The structure, composition and performance of NCXs were regulated by changing the carbonization temperature. The sample carbonized at 900 °C (NCX900) exhibited the best catalytic performance, completely removing bisphenol A in 60 min. Quenching experiments and linear sweep voltammograms demonstrated that PDS was activated mainly through an electron-transfer non-radical mechanism. It was found that graphitic N played a critical role in activating PDS. With this non-radical mechanism, the NCX900/PDS system could adapt well to the wide pH range (3–11) and high Cl− concentration; it selectively oxidized organic pollutants with low ionization potentials. This work provides a sustainable approach to the low-cost and efficient metal-free catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Tracking genomic sequences as microbial biomarkers in wastewater has been used to determine community prevalence of infectious diseases, contributing to public health surveillance programs. Here we report upon a low-cost, rapid, and user-friendly paper microfluidic platform for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza detection, using a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), with the signal read simply using a mobile phone camera. Sample-to-answer results were collected in -1. The device was subsequently used for on-site testing of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples from four quarantine hotels at London Heathrow Airport, showing comparable results to those obtained using a gold-standard polymerase chain reaction assay, as reference. Our sensing platform, which enables rapid and localized wastewater surveillance and does not require the sample to be sent to a centralized laboratory, is potentially an important public health tool for a wide variety of future applications, in community settings.

A reduced-order model (ROM) is developed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) considering the non-isothermal two-phase effects, with the goal of enhancing computational efficiency and thus accelerating fuel cell design development. Using analytical order reduction and approximation methods, the fluxes and source terms in conventional 1D conservation equations are reduced to six computing nodes at the interfaces between each cell component. The errors associated with order reduction are minimized by introducing new approximation methods for the potential distribution, the transport properties, and the membrane hydration status. The trade-off between model accuracy and computational efficiency is studied by comparing the simulation results and computational times of the new model with a full 1D model. Late-stage carotid atherosclerosis has a high incidence rate and may lead to various cerebrovascular diseases. The gene expression profile GSE100927 was selected to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in carotid atherosclerosis. Subsequently, protein-protein interaction, Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were conducted. Furthermore, experimental verification was performed using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), human aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (HAVSMCs) and Tohoku Hospital Pediatrics-1 (THP-1)-induced macrophages. The groups were as follows: Control group, solvent control group and palmitic acid group. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the three cell types were detected by flow cytometry or fluorescence microscopy. Furthermore, apoptosis of HUVECs and HAVSMCs was assessed by flow cytometry and the nuclear Hoechst 33258 staining of THP-1-induced macrophages was performed. Male late-stage carotid atherosclerosis samples, including 10 control samples and 21 atherosclerosis samples, were selected. Pathway enrichment analysis demonstrated that 'Toll-like receptor signaling pathway' was the top pathway associated with the DEGs. MMP7, MMP9, IL1β, C-C motif chemokine ligand 4 (CCL4), secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), CCL3 and interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) were selected for experimental verification. Palmitic acid increased the ROS levels and the apoptosis rates of HUVECs and HAVSMCs. However, it did not increase the levels of ROS and did not shrink the nuclei of THP-1-induced macrophages. Furthermore, palmitic acid increased the mRNA levels of IL1β, CCL4, SPP1, CCL3, IRF5, MMP7 and MMP9 in HUVECs and THP-1-induced macrophages, and increased the mRNA levels of CCL4 and MMP9 in HAVSMCs. In conclusion, IL1β, CCL3, CCL4, SPP1, IRF5, MMP7 and MMP9 are important markers of late-stage carotid atherosclerosis.

In this study, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was used to enhance UV/Fe0/H2O2 process for highly salty wastewater at neutral pH. The addition of Fe0 could not accelerate the UV/H2O2 process for salty wastewater treatment at neutral pH due to the precipitation of Fe ions. While NTA added into UV/Fe0/H2O2 process which could form complex with Fe ion, the tartrazine removal could increase from 45.7% to 84.7% within 60 min. The k-value of the UV/Fe0-NTA/H2O2 system to remove tartrazine is also 2.2 times higher than that in UV/Fe0/H2O2 system. Meanwhile, the UV/Fe0-NTA/H2O2 process could obtain good performance for salt wastewater treatment under a wide salt concentration level of 0–0.2 M. It can also expand the application range of pH to neutral pH. SEM and XPS characterization showed that the corrosion rate of Fe0 in salty system was faster, and the presence of NTA could accelerate the recirculation of Fe3+/Fe2+ on the Fe0 surface. EPR spectroscopic analysis and scavenge experiments showed that •OH was the main reactive radical for the removal of tartrazine in the UV/Fe0-NTA/H2O2 system. In addition, the k-value for removing tartrazine in various types of salt systems in the UV/Fe0-NTA/H2O2 system was 3.2–4.2 times that of the UV/Fe0/H2O2 system. It demonstrated UV/Fe0-NTA/H2O2 processes fits to different types of salt system. Therefore, this study will provide a new method for the treatment of saline wastewater at neutral pH.

For nearly three decades, zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been used in wastewater treatment and groundwater and soil remediation. ZVI can degrade contaminants by reactions of adsorption, redox, and co-precipitation. It can also react with oxidants like hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, and ozone to produce highly reactive radicals that can rapidly remove and even mineralize organic contaminants. However, the application of ZVI is also limited by factors such as the narrow pH range and surface passivation. The addition of chelating agents such as nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), or citrate to the ZVI-based processes has been identified to greatly increase the iron stability and improve the efficiency of contaminant degradation. From the perspective of commonly used organic and inorganic chelating agents in ZVI applications, the review addresses the current status of ligand-enhanced ZVI degradation of organic contaminants, illustrates the possible reaction mechanism, and provides perspectives for further research.

Biosensors and nanoscale analytical tools have shown huge growth in literature in the past 20 years, with a large number of reports on the topic of ‘ultrasensitive’, ‘cost-effective’, and ‘early detection’ tools with a potential of ‘mass-production’ cited on the web of science. Yet none of these tools are commercially available in the market or practically viable for mass production and use in pandemic diseases such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this context, we review the technological challenges and opportunities of current bio/chemical sensors and analytical tools by critically analyzing the bottlenecks which have hindered the implementation of advanced sensing technologies in pandemic diseases. We also describe in brief COVID-19 by comparing it with other pandemic strains such as that of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) for the identification of features that enable biosensing. Moreover, we discuss visualization and characterization tools that can potentially be used not only for sensing applications but also to assist in speeding up the drug discovery and vaccine development process. Furthermore, we discuss the emerging monitoring mechanism, namely wastewater-based epidemiology, for early warning of the outbreak, focusing on sensors for rapid and on-site analysis of SARS-CoV2 in sewage. To conclude, we provide holistic insights into challenges associated with the quick translation of sensing technologies, policies, ethical issues, technology adoption, and an overall outlook of the role of the sensing technologies in pandemics.

Sulfamethazine (SMT) is extensively used as growth promoters and antibacterial drugs. In this study, premagnetized Fe0 was used to catalyze H2O2 decomposition (pre-Fe0/H2O2) in the presence of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) to remove SMT at neutral pH conditions. In all, 30.3% and 99.8% of SMT were removed by the pre-Fe0/H2O2 process (60 min) and the pre-Fe0-NTA/H2O2 process (30 min), respectively. The removal rate of SMT in the pre-Fe0-NTA/H2O2 process was 2.5 times larger than that in the Fe0-NTA/H2O2 process. Electron paramagnetic resonance signals indicated that more radicals were generated in the pre-Fe0-NTA/H2O2 system. SMT and NTA and their degradation by-products adsorbed on pre-Fe0 reduced the contact angle of the particle and prevented the formation of Fe3O4 on the particle surface, thus accelerating Fe0 corrosion. Tafel scan images confirmed the enhancement of Fe0 corrosion in the presence of NTA and magnetic field. The Fe0 corrosion rate (109) after 20 min of reaction was 6.61 cm/s in pre-Fe0-NTA/H2O2, much higher than that in Fe0/H2O2 (0.73 cm/s), pre-Fe0/H2O2 (1.47 cm/s) and Fe0-NTA/H2O2 (2.94 cm/s). Pre-Fe0-NTA/H2O2 could also keep the fast SMT removal with eight consecutive runs without the addition of pre-Fe0 and NTA and presented high efficiency for SMT removal in real municipal wastewater.

Therapeutic drugs of chronic neuralgia have a high risk of addiction, making it crucial to identify novel drugs for chronic neuralgia. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of paeoniflorin on chronic sciatica via inhibiting Schwann cell apoptosis. 28 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups, including the sham operation group, chronic constriction injury (CCI) group, mecobalamin group, and paeoniflorin group. The therapeutic effect and mechanism of paeoniflorin were evaluated via rat and cell experiments. Mechanical, hot, or cold hyperalgesia was induced in the rats after CCI operation, while paeoniflorin relieved chronic neuralgia. Besides, paeoniflorin decreased the levels of IL1, IL6, TNF-α, CRP, and LPS and increased the level of IL10 in serum. As for the sciatic nerve, the number of inflammatory cells was decreased, and Schwann cells were present after paeoniflorin treatment, and paeoniflorin promoted the recovery of nerve structure. In cell experiments, LPS induced Schwann cell apoptosis via the TLR4/NF-kB pathway. And paeoniflorin attenuated LPS-induced Schwann cell apoptosis by decreasing the levels of TLR4, p-NF-kB, caspase3, cleaved-caspase3, and cleaved-caspase7. Overall, these results suggest that paeoniflorin alleviates chronic sciatica by decreasing inflammatory factor levels and promotes the repair of damaged nerves by reducing Schwann cell apoptosis.

Purpose: Carotid atherosclerosis is a serious vascular disease, leading to various cerebrovascular diseases. Methods: Gene expression profile of GSE100927 was selected to conduct differentially expressed genes. Then we performed protein-protein interactions, Gene ontology, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis. Then we used HUVEC, HAVSMC, and THP-1 induced macrophages cells to conduct experimental verification. The experimental groups were as follows: Control group, Solvent control group, and Palmitic acid group. We measured the levels of reactive oxygen species in three cells via flow cytometer or fluorescence microscope. Then we detected apoptosis of HUVEC cells and HAVSMC cells or observed nucleus of THP-1 induced macrophages cells. Results: We selected male carotid atherosclerosis, with 10 control samples and 21 atherosclerosis samples. The results of pathway enrichment showed that “Toll-like receptor signaling pathway” ranked first. We chose IL1β, CCL4, SPP1, CCL3, IRF5. MMP7 and MMP9 for experimental verification. Palmitic acid increased the reactive oxygen species levels and the apoptosis rates of HUVEC cells and HAVSMC cells while increasing the activity of THP-1 induced macrophages cells, and it cannot increase the level of reactive oxygen species, and shrink the nucleus. Palmitic acid increased mRNA levels of IL1β, CCL4, SPP1, CCL3, IRF5. MMP7 and MMP9 in HUVEC cells and THP-1 induced macrophages, and increased the mRNA levels of CCL4 and MMP9 in HAVSMC cells，not changed the mRNA level of IRF5. Conclusion: IL1β，CCL3, CCL4, SPP1, IRF5, MMP7, and MMP9 are significant markers of carotid atherosclerosis.

Purpose. We explored the role of ROS in cold-induced vasoconstriction and corresponding mechanism. Methods. Three experiments were performed. First, we measured blood flow in human hands before and after cold exposure. Second, 24 mice were randomly divided into 3 groups: 8 mice received saline injection, 8 received subcutaneous Tempol injection, and 8 received intrathecal Tempol injection. After 30 min, we determined blood flow in the skin before and after cold exposure. Finally, we used Tempol, CCG-1423, and Go 6983 to pretreat HAVSMCs and HUVECs for 24 h. Then, cells in the corresponding groups were exposed to cold (6 h, 4°C). After cold exposure, the cytoskeleton was stained. Intracellular Ca2+ and ROS levels were measured by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. We measured protein expression via Western blotting. Results. In the first experiment, after cold exposure, maximum skin blood flow decreased to 118.4 ± 50.97 flux units. Then, Tempol or normal saline pretreatment did not change skin blood flow. Unlike intrathecal Tempol injection, subcutaneous Tempol injection increased skin blood flow after cold exposure. Finally, cold exposure for 6 h shrank the cells, making them narrower, and increased intracellular Ca2+ and ROS levels in HUVECs and HAVSMCs. Tempol reduced cell shrinkage and decreased intracellular Ca2+ levels. In addition, Tempol decreased intracellular ROS levels. Cold exposure increased RhoA, Rock1, p-MLC-2, ET-1, iNOS, and p-PKC expression and decreased eNOS expression. Tempol or CCG-1423 pretreatment decreased RhoA, Rock1, and p-MLC-2 levels in HAVSMCs. Furthermore, Tempol or Go 6983 pretreatment decreased ET-1, iNOS, and p-PKC expression and increased eNOS expression in HUVECs. Conclusion. ROS mediate the vasoconstrictor response within the cold-induced vascular response, and ROS in blood vessel tissues rather than nerve fibers are involved in vasoconstriction via the ROS/RhoA/ROCK1 and ROS/PKC/ET-1 pathways in VSMCs and endothelial cells.

Gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) is a common malignant tumor, accounting for 95% of gastric cancers. However, the effects and regulatory mechanisms of long non-coding RNA TRPM2-AS (TRPM2-AS) in GAC have not been fully explored. Our study investigates the action mechanism of TRPM2-AS in GAC. After performing quantitative Real-Time polymerase chain reaction or western blotting, we found that the levels of TRPM2-AS and Plasminogen Activator, Urokinase (PLAU) were upregulated in GAC, whereas the level of miR-138-5p was downregulated. Cell function experiments proved that silencing TRPM2-AS suppressed proliferation and migration and induced apoptosis in GAC cells. Bioinformatic analysis and luciferase assay identified the interaction between TRPM2-AS, miR-138-5p, and PLAU. In addition, the inhibitory effect of silencing TRPM2-AS on GAC cells could be partially relieved by PLAU overexpression. In conclusion, our study revealed that TRPM2-AS sponging miR-138-5p to upregulate PLAU could contribute to GAC progression, which might be useful for identifying biomarkers for GAC therapy. Nutrients and heavy metals (HM) in the sediment have an impact on microbial diversity and community structure. In this study, the distribution characteristics of nutrients, HM, and microbial community in the sediments along the Longsha River, a tributary of the Pearl River (or Zhu Jiang), China were investigated by analyzing samples from 11 sites. On the basis of the HM-contamination level, the 11 sampling sites were divided into three groups to explore the changes in microbial communities at different ecological risk levels. Results indicated that nutrient concentrations were higher near farmlands and residential lands, while the ecological risk of HM at the 11 sampling sites was from high to low as S10 S2 S9 S6 S11 S7 S5 S8 S3 S4 S1. Among these HM, Cu, Cr, and Ni had intense ecological risks. In addition, the results of Variance Partitioning Analysis (VPA) revealed a higher contribution of HM (35.93%) to microbial community variation than nutrients (12.08%) and pH (4.08%). Furthermore, the HM-tolerant microbial taxa (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Romboutsia, norank_o__Gaiellales, and etc.) were the dominant genera, and they were more dynamic around industrial lands, while microbes involved in the C, N, and S cycles (e.g., Smithella, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, Bacter oidetes_vadinHA17, and Syntrophorhabdus) were inhibited by HM, while their abundance was lower near industrial lands and highway but higher around residential lands. A three-unit monitoring program of land-use types, pollutants, and microbial communities was proposed. These results provide a new perspective on the control of riparian land-use types based on contaminants and microbes, and different microbial community response patterns may provide a reference for contaminant control in sediments with intensive industrial activities.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been considered as a promising power source for electric vehicles. However, the widespread use of PEMFCs requires a significant improvement in durability. As a key component of PEMFCs, gas diffusion layer (GDL) does not only provide a mechanical support for other fuel cell components, but also governs the mass, heat, and electron transport that directly affect cell performance. In this paper, the latest research progress of GDL durability is reviewed from three aspects: degradation mechanisms, experimental methods, and modelling approaches. The six degradation modes of GDLs, namely chemical oxidation, electrochemical carbon corrosion, freezing/thawing, mechanical degradation, material dissolution and erosion by gas flow are discussed under different cell operating conditions. Experimental techniques, including the long-term and accelerated stress tests (AST) and methods for measuring property deterioration are then introduced. Several AST protocols have been developed to decouple the above degradation modes, but few have tried to relate these tests with GDL degradation in practice. Modelling approaches relating to GDL degradation are also covered. Although various types of models have been developed for multiple purposes, a complete model from the mechanistic level to the cell performance is still missing.

The aim of the present study was to assess the protective effects of 18β-GA against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced injury. First, the SMILES annotation for 18β-GA was used to search PubChem and for reverse molecular docking in Swiss Target Prediction, the Similarity Ensemble Approach Search Server and the TargetNet database to obtain potential targets. Injury-related molecules were obtained from the GeneCards database and the predicted targets of 18β-GA for injury treatment were selected by Wayne diagram analysis. Subsequently, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis was performed by WebGestalt. The experimental cells were assorted into control, model, 10 µM SB203580-treated, 5 µM 18β-GA-treated and 10 µM 18β-GA-treated groups. Hoechst 33258 staining was performed and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, cell apoptosis, Bcl-xl, Bcl-2, Bad, Bax, cleaved-caspase 3, cleaved-caspase 7, transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) levels, as well as p38 MAPK phosphorylation were measured. The ‘Inflammatory mediator regulation of TRP channels’ pathway was selected for experimental verification. The results indicated that 10 µM 18β-GA significantly increased cell viability as compared with the H2O2-treated model group. As suggested by the difference in intracellular ROS fluorescence intensity, 18β-GA inhibited H2O2-induced ROS production in Schwann cells. Hoechst 33258 staining indicated that 18β-GA reversed chromatin condensation and the increase in apoptotic nuclei following H2O2 treatment. Furthermore, flow cytometry suggested that 18β-GA substantially inhibited H2O2-induced apoptosis. Pre-treatment with 18β-GA obviously reduced Bad, Bax, cleaved-caspase3, cleaved-caspase 7, TRPA1 and TRPV1 levels and p38 MAPK phosphorylation after H2O2 treatment and increased Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl levels. In conclusion, 18β-GA inhibited Schwann cell injury and apoptosis induced by H2O2 and may be a potential drug to prevent peripheral nerve injury.

This study presents a novel pre-magnetized Fe0/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/air (pre-Fe0/EDTA/air) Fenton-like system to remove sulfamethazine (SMT). SMT removal only reached 10.6% in pre-Fe0/air system (0.2 g L−1, SMT 3 mg L−1, pH 5) while reached 88.5% in pre-Fe0/EDTA/air system within 1 h (0.2 g L−1, SMT 3 mg L−1, EDTA 2 mM, pH 5). EDTA could combine with FeII or FeIII to keep iron soluble in the solution and the fast activation of molecular oxygen by Fe-EDTA complex could induce the fast and more production of H2O2. It was found that much more H2O2 (5.1 mg L−1) and OH radical (26.4 μM) were produced in the pre-Fe0/EDTA/air system than in the pre-Fe0/air system (0.06 mg L−1, 0.6 μM) within 1 h. The degradation rate of SMT (1 0 3) in pre-Fe0/EDTA/air system (38.4 min−1) was also 2.3 times as large as that in the Fe0/EDTA/air system (17.0 min−1), owing to the fast corrosion rate of pre-Fe0. 81.5 mgL−1 total Fe ions could be generated in pre-Fe0/EDTA/air while 53.6 mg L−1 in Fe0/EDTA/air. Fe0 dosage (0.05–0.8 g L−1) and EDTA dosage (0–8 mM) were optimized and the optimal dosage for Fe0 and EDTA was 0.2 g L−1 and 2 mM, respectively. The degradation rate of SMT in pre-Fe0/EDTA/air system were 1.6–2.9 times at different initial pH (3–6) and 2.3–3.1 times in the presence of inorganic ions (SO42−, Cl− and HCO3−) and natural organic matter (NOM) compared with Fe0/EDTA/air system. Decrease of Fe0 contact angle in the presence of magnetization and EDTA enhanced the corrosion rate of Fe0. Accordingly, pre-Fe0/EDTA/air system would be a cost-effective and promising eco-friendly alternative for removal of SMT.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) have been frequently detected in the aquatic environment and have adverse effect on the environment. In our present study, four ECs (800 μgL−1 oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC); 400 μgL−1 sulfadiazine (SD) and sulfamethazine (SMT)) spiked into the secondary wastewater effluent (SWE) were treated by novel UV/pre-magnetized Fe0/PS process (UV/pre-Fe0/PS). TC, OTC and SMT could be completely removed within 30 min and 98.4% SD could be removed within 60 min, while less than 10%, 20% and 60% ECs could be removed by Fe0/PS, pre-Fe0/PS and UV process within 60 min. Synergetic factor values (6.1–12.3) in UV/pre-Fe0/PS were much larger than in UV/Fe0/PS (2.3–5.4) to remove various ECs, achieving 0.7–2.2 times enhancement in degradation rate constants and 45%–86% reduction in treatment costs. EPR spectra and scavenging tests by tert-butyl alcohol and methanol confirmed that not only faster and more SO4 − and OH radicals were produced but also their contributions to SMT removal were enhanced. Optimization of dosage of Fe0 (0–0.4 mM) and dosage of PS (0–0.4 mM) indicated that 0.2 mM Fe0 and 0.2 mM PS was the optimal dosage. Meanwhile, this process not only could enhance 0.7–15.8 times degradation rate constant but also could reduce about 14.3–97.9% costs to remove various ECs compared with US/Fe0/PS, ozonation, VUV/UV/Fe3+ and UV/H2O2 process. Moreover, it could enhance 1.4 times of degradation rate constant and reduce about 62% cost to remove SMT in another SWE, indicating the applicability in different wastewaters. Therefore, UV/pre-Fe0/PS process is promising and cost-effective to remove ECs in SWEs.

Diclofenac sodium (DCF) is frequently detected as a non-steroidal pharmaceutical in the aquatic environment. In this study, the degradation of DCF in two heterogeneous systems, pre-magnetization Fe0/H2O2 (Pre-Fe0/H2O2) and Fe0/H2O2 system, was comparably studied. Our findings proved that Pre-Fe0 could significantly improve the degradation and dechlorination of DCF due to the change of Fe0 characteristics after pre-magnetization. Compared with Fe0/H2O2 process, Pre-Fe0/H2O2 process has 2.1-7.0 times higher rate constant for DCF degradation at different H2O2 dosages (0.25-2.0 mM), initial pH (3.0-6.0) and Fe0 dosages (0.25-1.5 mM). The characterizations by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance confirmed that the enhancement attributed to the increase of Fe0 corrosion and fast generation of OH. In addition, preliminary degradation mechanism was elucidated by major products identification using UPLC-MS, through which the degradation intermediates, such as 4-hydroxy-diclofenac or 5-hydroxydiclofenac, 2,6-dichloroaniline, phenylacetic acid, 1,3-dichlorobenzene and 2-aminophenylacetic acid were identified. Hydroxylation, decarboxylation, CN bond cleavage and ring-opening involving the attack of OH or other substances, were the main degradation mechanism. Therefore, Pre-Fe0/H2O2 process, which does not need extra energy and costly reagents, is an efficient and environmental-friendly process to degrade DCF.

Sulfamethazine (SMT) is widely used in human and veterinary medicine as growth promoters and antibacterial drugs and it can pose potential threats to human and ecosystem health. In this study, removal of SMT by ultrasound pre-magnetized Fe0/PS process was investigated for the first time. Degradation rate for removing SMT increased 3.3 folds and the synergy factor increased from 1.2 to 2.7 compared with US/Fe0/PS process. Affecting factors such as pH (3–10), Fe0 dosage (0–0.8 mM) and initial SMT concentration (0–10 mg L−1) were studied. Stronger signals of DMPO–OH and DMPO–SO4 adduct also illustrated more and faster SO4 − and OH radicals produced in the system. FeOOH was detected through the mossbauer spectrum which could both enhance the catalysis of H2O2 and activation of PS. The intermediates of the SMT degradation were investigated, and a degradation pathway was proposed. Higher correlation factor (△k and △S) in US/pre-magn-Fe0/PS system illustrated the good synergistic effect between US input power and magnetic field. Moreover, the process could efficiently remove SMT in municipal wastewater and keep pH neutral. So, US/pre-magn-Fe0/PS process is a energy saving and promising approach to remove antibiotics in real wastewater.

Osmotic pressure provided by salty wastewaters is an important influencing factor for alginate-like exopolysaccharides (ALE) in aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Therefore, research on the influence of salinity (NaCl 0 R1, 10 g/L R2, 30 g/L R3) on AGS and its ALE formation was conducted. A salinity of 1% induced larger particle size with smooth spheroidal shape and enhanced granular strength in R2. The TOC and ammonia removal were unaffected in both R2 and R3, but the P removal was greatly enhanced. ALE was much enriched at moderate salinity (1% NaCl). The amount of ALE reached 49.8 mg/g VSS at 140 d in R2, which was much higher than in R1 (26.8 mg/g VSS) and R3 (28.9 mg/g VSS), possibly due to the activation of gene algC expression in AGS of R2. ALE also showed the largest GG block fractionation and MW in R2, which indicated the greatest enhancement of mechanical properties. Moreover, enrichment of glucosamine, lipid content, and octadecanamide derivative in ALE of R2 endowed it with medicinal potential, stronger water-barrier property, and reduction of the products’ friction coefficients, respectively. Therefore, AGS based on ALE is a potential technology for treatment of salty wastewater.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment is a global concern for public health and recent studies have shown that various soil pollutants (e.g. heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons) can cause the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistance genes in the soil. This emergence of AMR in soil is therefore prompting the research community for the development of rapid and real-time monitoring tools to better understand the source, fate and transfer pathway of AMR in contaminated soils. In this respect, the recent development of rapid sensors-based methods has been critically reviewed. The analytical performance of each sensing technique along with their advantages and limitations is further discussed to inform future development needs for the next generation sensors that would allow rapid and multiplexed detection of AMR in contaminated soils. By doing so, it would assist the decision making during remediation project and provide crucial insights into the risk assessment for contaminated sites.

Public health is attracting increasing attention due to the current global pandemic, and wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a powerful tool for monitoring of public health by analysis of a variety of biomarkers (e.g., chemicals and pathogens) in wastewater. Rapid development of WBE requires rapid and on-site analytical tools for monitoring of sewage biomarkers to provide immediate decision and intervention. Biosensors have been demonstrated to be highly sensitive and selective tools for the analysis of sewage biomarkers due to their fast response, ease-to-use, low cost and the potential for field-testing. This paper presents biosensors as effective tools for wastewater analysis of potential biomarkers and monitoring of public health via WBE. In particular, we discuss the use of sewage sensors for rapid detection of a range of targets, including rapid monitoring of community-wide illicit drug consumption and pathogens for early warning of infectious diseases outbreaks. Finally, we provide a perspective on the future use of the biosensor technology for WBE to enable rapid on-site monitoring of sewage, which will provide nearly real-time data for public health assessment and effective intervention.

The Fe2+/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process always faced the major drawbacks of slow Fe2+ regeneration, reagent waste and strict pH requirement. Significant synergy was found by combining the visible light driven g-C3N4 photocatalysis with Fe2+(or Fe3+)/PMS at very low amount of reagent dosages. The synergistic mechanisms were investigated systematically. It was found that visible light played a minor role and the photoelectrons excited from g-C3N4 played the dominant role in the fast regeneration of Fe2+, and iron species should be the dominant activator for PMS compared with g-C3N4 in the combined process. For the complete degradation of 0.01 mM Bisphenol A (BPA), the consumption of PMS and Fe2+ in the combined process accounted for only 1/27 and 1/198 as that consumed in Fe2+/PMS process. The O2•–, 1O2 and Fe(IV) were found to be the dominant reactive species in Fe2+/PMS, while •OH was more preferably and continuously produced in the combined process. Moreover, the combined process showed significant advantages to maintain high efficiency over a wide pH range (3.0 ∼ 8.5) and to degrade pollutants with high concentrations. Stronger mineralization capability was also achieved by the combined process than the inclusive processes. Two degradation pathways of BPA degradation were proposed based on identifying the intermediates.
