In the Middle East, there remain many technical challenges in the water saturation evaluation of carbonate rocks and the effective identification of reservoir fluid properties. The traditional Archie equation is not applicable to carbonate reservoirs with complex pore structures and varying reservoir space distribution, as there are obvious “non-Archie” phenomena. In this paper, by analyzing the experimental data on the rock resistivity of the target formation in the study area and analyzing the relationship between stratigraphic factors and porosity, the previous fitting method was modified as a result of using the actual data while avoiding the cementation index as a way to improve Archie’s formula to evaluate the water saturation. Based on the improved Archie formula, the mathematical differential operation of water saturation and porosity was carried out using the formation resistivity. The calculation results of irreducible water saturation were used to calibrate the oil layer, and the water layer was calibrated when the water saturation was 100%, allowing for a novel reservoir fluid property identification method. This total differential method can effectively identify the oil-down-to (ODT) and water-up-to (WUT) levels in an oil–water system and then accurately divide the transition zone of the oil–water layer. When this method was applied, the identification results were in good agreement with production conclusions and test data with an accuracy rate of 89.95%. Although the use of geophysical logging data from open-hole wells combined with the total differential method is only applicable to wells with similar logging time and production time, it is possible to compare geophysical logging data from different periods to construct oil–water profiles to observe the changes in ODT over time to guide development and adjust production plans. The proposed reservoir fluid property identification method and the improved water saturation calculation formula can meet the requirements of water saturation evaluation in the target block with low calculation cost and easy implementation, which provides a new method for water saturation evaluation and rapid identification of reservoir fluid properties.

Based on the positive effect of both intergroup contact and ingroup identification on mental health and well-being, this article proposes and tests a new model of individual loneliness reduction through intergroup contact by promoting common ingroup identity.Methods: A total of 263 majority ethnic members and 275 minority ethnic members from China participated in the survey. Intergroup contact, common ingroup identity and loneliness were measured at three time-points (T1-T3) over an 8-month period. Longitudinal mediation analysis and parallel process Latent Growth Curve Model for mediation are used for the examination of the indirect effect of common ingroup identity.Results: Longitudinal mediation analysis showed that intergroup contact quality at T1 positively predicted common ingroup identity at T2, and common ingroup identity at T2 alleviated loneliness at T3. Intergroup contact quality at T1 was indirectly linked to loneliness at T3 via common ingroup identity at T2. The parallel process latent growth curve model for mediation confirmed the robustness of the indirect effect of common ingroup identity. In addition, the growth rate of the quality of intergroup contact increased the growth rate of common ingroup identity, but reduced the growth rate of loneliness.Conclusion: The current study revealed the protectiveness of intergroup contact and common ingroup identity on loneliness, viz., intergroup contact reduces individual loneliness by promoting common ingroup identity, the implication being that intergroup contact and common ingroup identity should be taken into account in intervening process of loneliness prevention so that an individual’s physical and mental health could be better safeguarded.Keywords: intergroup contact, common ingroup identity, loneliness, group-based intervention

Based on the terror management theory (TMT), this study integrated self-esteem and close relationships to explore the effects of group identification on death anxiety. Five hundred and four participants completed the Death Anxiety, Rosenberg Self-Esteem, Social Identity, and Inclusion of Other in the Self scales via online platforms. There were significant correlations among group identification, close relationship, self-esteem, and death anxiety. Group identification had a significant negative predictive effect on death anxiety. Specifically, group identification affects death anxiety through two pathways: the separate mediating role of self-esteem and the serial mediation pathway of close relationships → self-esteem. Our study provides direct evidence that group identification relieves death anxiety. The results showed that the alleviating function of group identification was mediated by self-esteem and close relationships. This study provides a new perspective concerning TMT as a defense mechanism against death anxiety.

Purpose Intergroup contact is an effective strategy to improve intergroup relationships. Although intergroup relationships have been studied extensively, the individual roles of quantity and quality of contact in relationships with cognition, emotion, and intention of behavior toward other ethnic minority groups are not fully understood. This study explores the situation via network analysis among Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities in Southwest China. Methods We investigated the quantity and quality of intergroup contact and cognition, emotion, and intention of behavior among a sample of 543 Zhuang and 490 Yao ethnic group members. Data were analyzed using the R-package. Network structures were analyzed via the Qgraph package, and the accuracy and stability of the network were measured via the Bootnet package; communities were detected via the Igraph package; bridge analyses were conducted via the Networktools package; and the network difference was compared via the Network Comparison Test package. Results The results indicated perceived intimacy is the central node. Quantity of contact constructed a community with “perceived connection,” “sense of community,” “knowledge about out-group,” and “perceived similarity.” Meanwhile, quality of contact constructed a community with “intergroup attitude” and a “feeling thermometer.” The remainder of the nodes constructed two additional communities. The network global connectivity and structure between the two ethnic groups were highly similar. Conclusion The study examined the quantity and quality of intergroup contact via network analysis for two ethnic minority groups. It was shown that the two groups’ global network structures of intergroup contact and their effects are highly similar. Specifically, quantity and quality of contact produce different effects on intergroup relations. Quantity of contact has proximal effects, including instant cognitive and emotional response without depth cognition, while quality of contact has proximal effects that may change deep-seated cognition and subsequently improve intergroup relations., Video abstract Point your SmartPhone at the code above. Objective: To analyze the contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) characteristics and microvessel density (MVD) of thyroid carcinomas vs. benign thyroid lesions, and to determine the value of CEUS in the clinical diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma. Methods: Forty-five patients (34 women, 11 men; mean age, 45.95 ± 12.20 years) with 57 thyroid nodules underwent preoperative CEUS with SonoVue (injected as a bolus via an elbow vein). The CEUS data were analyzed using QLAB quantitative analysis software. The enhancement patterns and quantitative parameters of thyroid carcinoma were evaluated.Additionally, immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate MVD. Results: Most malignant nodules showed hypo-enhancement, and this enhancement pattern had 68.18% sensitivity and 92.31% specificity in diagnosing thyroid carcinomas. Most benign nodules showed ring enhancement, which had 46.15% sensitivity and 100% specificity in diagnosing benign nodules. Compared with the peripheral glandular tissue, thyroid carcinomas had significantly smaller peak intensities (PI) and wash-in slopes (P ＜ 0.05). Malignant nodules had significantly lower MVD than benign nodules (P ＜ 0.05). A positive correlation was between the PI and MVD (P ＜ 0.01). Conclusion: CEUS can improve the diagnosis of thyroid carcinomas, and is a useful complement to conventional ultrasonography.

Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) play a key role in regulating gene expression, and SINE RNAs are involved in age-related diseases. We investigated the anti-aging effects of a genetically engineered murine SINE B1 antisense RNA (B1as RNA) and explored its mechanism of action in naturally senescent BALB/c (≥14 months) and moderately senscent C57BL/6N (≥9 months) mice. After tail vein injection, B1as RNA was available in the blood of mice for approximately 30 min, persisted for approximately 2–4 h in most detected tissues and persisted approximately 48 h in lungs. We found that treatment with B1as RNA improved stamina and promoted hair re-growth in aged mice. Treatment with B1as RNA also partially rescued the increase in mitochondrial DNA copy number in liver and spleen tissues observed in aged and moderately senescent mice. Finally, treatment with B1as RNA increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in aged and moderately senescent mice, reduced these animals’ malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species levels, and modulated the expression of several aging-associated genes, including Sirtuin 1, p21, p16Ink4a, p15Ink4b and p19Arf, and anti-oxidant genes (Sesn1 and Sesn 2). These data suggest that B1as RNA inhibits the aging process by enhancing antioxidant activity, promoting the scavenging of free radicals, and modulating the expression of aging-associated genes. This is the first report describing the anti-aging activity of SINE antisense RNA, which may serve as an effective nucleic acid drug for the treatment of age-related diseases.

Neuroinflammation is one of the major processes that trigger neuropathological amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) progression. Naked mole rats, which are the longest living rodents and exhibit negligible senescence, have a special brain microenvironment characterized by high-molecular-mass hyaluronan (HMM-HA) and high levels of neuregulin 1 (NRG1), which are related to resistance to neuroinflammation and Aβ deposition, leading to protection from AD. Thus, mimicking the unique brain microenvironment of the naked mole rat as a strategy for AD treatment is of critical interest. Here, naked mole rat HMM-HA and NRG1 were used to establish an injectable neuroinflammation-responsive triglycerol monostearate (TM)-HA-NRG1 hydrogel to alter the brain microenvironment in the early to late stages of AD. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) delivery of the hydrogel resulted in significant mitigation of Aβ plaque formation and complement C1q deposition in the hippocampus. Interestingly, we found that C1q deposition on pericytes was probably associated with capillary dysfunction. Furthermore, continuous intervention obviously reduced C1q deposition on pericytes and improved the oxygen supply to the brain. Importantly, in 16-month-old AD mice, cognitive decline was significantly ameliorated after TM-HA-NRG1 hydrogel treatment. Thus, the work reported here provides a potential early intervention strategy for retarding later AD progression.

The establishment of functional neuronal connectivity is dependent on the neuronal migration and the accurate positioning of neurons in the developing brain. Abnormal neuronal migration can trigger neuronal maturation defects and apoptosis. However, many genetic bases remain unclear in neuronal migration disorders during brain development. In this study, we reported that MARVELD1-defected mice displayed motor and cognitive dysfunction resulting from aberrant neuronal migration during brain development. The laminar organization of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum in MARVELD1 knockout (KO) mice is disrupted, indicating impaired radial neuronal migration. Furthermore, we used the cerebellum as a model to explore the radial neuronal migration processes, and the results demonstrated that the proper neuronal migration depended on MARVELD1 expression in glial cells of the developing brain. MARVELD1 suppressed the expression of ITGB1 and FAK Tyr397 phosphorylation in glia-dependent manner. The inhibition of the MARVELD1/ITGB1/FAK signalling pathway in MARVELD1 KO mice could reverse the defects in neuronal migration in vitro. Our findings revealed that MARVELD1 regulated neuronal migration by mediating the formation of glial fibres and ITGB1/FAK signalling pathway. The depletion of MARVELD1 during mouse brain development led to the abnormity of motor and cognition functions.

Summary: Immune and inflammation dysregulation have been associated with the aging process and contribute to age-related disorders, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we employed late-generation Terc knockout (Terc−/−) mice to investigate the impact of telomere dysfunction on the host defense and function of innate immune cells. Terc−/− mice displayed exaggerated lung inflammation and increased mortality upon respiratory staphylococcal infection, although their pathogen-clearing capacity was uncompromised. Mechanistically, we found that telomere dysfunction caused macrophage mitochondrial abnormality, oxidative stress, and hyperactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The ubiquitin-editing enzyme TNFAIP3, together with PGC-1α, was critically involved in the regulation of mitochondrial and inflammatory gene expression and essential for the homeostatic role of telomeres. Together, the study reveals a regulatory paradigm that connects telomeres to mitochondrial metabolism, innate immunity, and inflammation, shedding light on age-related pathologies. : Kang et al. show that dysfunctional telomeres cause macrophage mitochondrial distress, metabolic imbalance, and hyperactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. They identify the PGC1α/TNFAIP3 axis as a mechanism responsible for the homeostatic role of the telomere, the disturbance of which leads to inflammatory Terc−/− macrophages and severe bacterial pneumonia in Terc−/− mice. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease that causes unremitting deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, thus resulting in distortion of the pulmonary architecture and impaired gas exchange. Associated with high morbidity and mortality, IPF is generally refractory to current pharmacological therapies. Lefty A, a potent inhibitor of transforming growth factor-β signaling, has been shown to have promising antifibrotic ability in vitro for the treatment of renal fibrosis and other potential organ fibroses. Here, we determined whether Lefty A can attenuate bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in vivo based on a novel therapeutic strategy where human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells are genetically engineered with the Lefty A-associated GFP gene. The engineered HEK293 cells were encapsulated in alginate microcapsules and then subcutaneously implanted in ICR mice that had 1 wk earlier been intratracheally administered BLM to induce pulmonary fibrosis. The severity of fibrosis in lung tissue was assessed using pathological morphology and collagen expression to examine the effect of Lefty A released from the microencapsulated cells. The engineered HEK293 cells with Lefty A significantly reduced the expression of connective tissue growth factor and collagen type I mRNA, lessened the morphological fibrotic effects induced by BLM, and increased the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9. This illustrates that engineered HEK293 cells with Lefty A can attenuate pulmonary fibrosis in vivo, thus providing a novel method to treat human pulmonary fibrotic disease and other organ fibroses.

However, most therapeutic agents are only able to kill a small proportion of CSCs by targeting one or two cell surface markers or dysregulated CSC pathways, which are usually shared with normal stem cells (NSCs). In this study, we developed a novel nondrug delivery system for the dual targeting of CSCs by conjugating hyaluronic acid (HA) and grafting the doublecortin-like kinase 1 (DCLK1) monoclonal antibody to the surface of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs), which can specifically target CD44 receptors and the DCLK1 surface marker – the latter was shown to possess the capacity to distinguish between CSCSs and NSCs. The size and morphology of these NPs were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This was followed by studies of NP encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release properties. Then, the cytotoxicity of the NPs was tested via Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. Finally, the 4T1 CSCs were obtained from the alginate-based platform, which we developed as an in vitro tumor model. Tumor-bearing nudemice were used as in vivo models to systematically detect the ability of NPs to target CSCs. Our results showed that the DCLK1–HA–PEG–PLGA NPs exhibited a targeting effect toward CSCs both in vitro and in vivo. Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures developed with living cells and scaffolds have demonstrated outstanding potential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. However, no suitable tools are available to monitor dynamically variable cell behavior in such a complex microenvironment. In particular, simultaneously assessing cell behavior, cell secretion, and the general state of a 3D culture system is of a really challenging task. This paper presents our development of a dual-transduction-integrated biosensing system that assesses electrical impedance in conjunction with imaging techniques to simultaneously investigate the 3D cell-culture for bone regeneration. First, we created models to mimic the dynamic deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in 3D culture, which underwent osteogenesis by incorporating different amounts of bone-ECM components (collagen, hydroxyapatite [HAp], and hyaluronic acid [HA]) into alginate-based hydrogels. The formed models were investigated by means of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), with the results showing that the impedances increased linearly with collagen and hyaluronan, but changed in a more complex manner with HAp. Thereafter, we created two models that consisted of primary osteoblast cells (OBs), which expressed the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), and 4T1 cells, which secreted the EGFP-HA, in the alginate hydrogel. We found the capacitance (associated with impedance and measured by EIS) increased with the increases in initial embedded OBs, and also confirmed the cell proliferation over 3 days with the EGFP signal as monitored by the fluorescent imaging component in our system. Interestingly, the change in capacitance is found to be associated with OB migration following stimulation. Also, we show higher capacitance in 4T1 cells that secret HA when compared to control 4T1 cells after a 3-day culture. Taken together, we demonstrate that our biosensing system is able to investigate the dynamic process of 3D culture in a non-invasive and real-time manner.

The naked mole rat (nmr) is cancer resistant due to the abundant production of extremely high-molecular-weight hyaluronan (EHMW-HA). However, whether EHMW-HA has similar anti-cancer effects in mice and humans remains to be determined. The present study used breast cancer cells to clarify the effect of EHMW-HA on breast cancer. First, the overexpression of nmrHas2 in 4T1 and BT549 cell lines in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models to mimic tumor microenvironment was established. The 4T1/BT549-nmrHas2 cells could secrete EHMW-HA (with a molecular weight of up to 6 MDa), which was similar to that found in the naked mole rat. Second, EHMW-HA altering tumor microenvironment in both 2D monolayers and 3D spheroids significantly enhanced apoptosis, inhibiting the proliferation of 4T1 and BT549 cells. The prominent anticancer effects of EHMW-HA on the cancer-cell apoptosis phenotype were further confirmed by inhibiting tumor formation in nude mice. Finally, EHMW-HA significantly induced higher p53 protein expression, which enhanced pro-apoptotic proteins p21 and Bax in breast cancer cells; this is in contrast with the triggering of hypersensitivity of the naked mole rat cells to early contact inhibition (ECI). These results have important implications for the design of therapeutic approaches based on the application of EHMW-HA.

Visual tracking is a fundamental vision task that tries to figure out instances of several object classes from videos and images. It has attracted much attention for providing the basic semantic information for numerous applications. Over the past 10 years, visual tracking has made a great progress, but huge challenges still exist in many real-world applications. The facade of a target can be transformed significantly by pose changing, occlusion, and sudden movement, which possibly leads to a sudden target loss. This paper builds a hybrid tracker combining the deep feature method and correlation filter to solve this challenge, and verifies its powerful characteristics. Specifically, an effective visual tracking method is proposed to address the problem of low tracking accuracy due to the limitations of traditional artificial feature models, then rich hiearchical features of Convolutional Neural Networks are used to make the multi-layer features fusion improve the tracker learning accuracy. Finally, a large number of experiments are conducted on benchmark data sets OBT-100 and OBT-50, and show that our proposed algorithm is effective.

Self-conscious emotions are a distinct category of emotional responses that are rooted in social contexts. Previous findings suggest that negative self-conscious emotions might be elicited by a specific social factor, that is, symbolic intergroup threat. The present study tested the hypothesis that this is true, with three experiments conducted in the Chinese-context. In particular, the Mandarin words for shame (羞愧), guilt (内疚) and loss of face (丢脸) were examined. Symbolic threats were manipulated in all three experiments, with participants randomly divided into a symbolic threat condition and a control condition in each experiment. As expected, participants in the symbolic threat condition always reported more negative self-conscious emotions compared to participants in the control condition. These results suggest that symbolic intergroup threat can lead to self-conscious emotions as well as basic emotions, as was demonstrated by previous research.

Transplanted stem cells constitute a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of neurological disorders. Emerging evidence indicates that a negative microenvironment, particularly one characterized by the acute inflammation/immune response caused by physical injuries or transplanted stem cells, severely impacts the survival of transplanted stem cells. In this study, to avoid the influence of the increased inflammation following physical injuries, an intelligent, double-layer, alginate hydrogel system is designed. This system fosters the matrix metalloproeinases (MMP) secreted by transplanted stem cell reactions with MMP peptide grafted on the inner layer and destroys the structure of the inner hydrogel layer during the inflammatory storm. Meanwhile, the optimum concentration of the arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide is also immobilized to the inner hydrogels to obtain more stem cells before arriving to the outer hydrogel layer. It is found that blocking Cripto-1, which promotes embryonic stem cell differentiation to dopamine neurons, also accelerates this process in neural stem cells. More interesting is the fact that neural stem cell differentiation can be conducted in astrocyte-differentiation medium without other treatments. In addition, the system can be adjusted according to the different parameters of transplanted stem cells and can expand on the clinical application of stem cells in the treatment of this neurological disorder.

Although the explicit attitudes of Chinese people toward the self over time are known (i.e., past = present < future), little is known about their implicit attitudes. Two studies were conducted to measure the implicit subjective temporal trajectory (STT) of Chinese undergraduates. Study 1 used a Go/No-go association task to measure participants’ implicit attitudes toward their past, present, and future selves. The obtained implicit STT was different from the explicit pattern found in former research. It showed that the future self was viewed to be identical to the present self and participants implicitly evaluated their present self as better than the past self. Since this comparison of the past and present selves suggested a cultural difference, we aimed to replicate this finding in Study 2. Using an implicit association test, we again found that the present self was more easily associated with positive valence than the past self. Overall, both studies reveal an implicitly inclining-flat STT (i.e., past < present = future) for Chinese undergraduates. Implications of this difference in explicit-implicit measures and the cultural differences of temporal self appraisals are discussed.

Pyroptosis is a type of proinflammatory programmed cell death mediated by caspase 1 activity and occurs in several types of eukaryotic tumor cells, including gliomas. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small endogenous noncoding RNAs, have been demonstrated to be advantageous in glioma therapy. However, the question of whether miRNAs regulate pyroptosis in glioma remains unknown. The current study found that caspase 1 expression was substantially increased in both glioma tissues and glioma cell lines, U87 and T98G, while miR-214 expression was significantly downregulated. Luciferase reporter assay recognized caspase 1 as a target gene of miR-214. These findings demonstrate that miR-214 could inhibit cell proliferation and migration through the regulation of pyroptosis intermediated by caspase 1 in glioma U87 and T98G cells and may suggest a novel therapeutic for the intervention of glioma.

Previous gaze-cuing studies found that intergroup threat is one of the modulators of gaze cuing. These findings indicate that intergroup threat would gate social attention by activating a network resembling that is thought to be involved in drawing or/and holding attention. The present study tested this hypothesis using a gaze-cuing task in which a particular in-group participants observed threatening out-group and nonthreatening out-group gazes, while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. As expected, greater gaze cuing effect only emerged for threatening out-group when the in-group participants only felt inergroup threat from that out-group. Behaviorally, we found intergroup threatening out-group gazes did not draw attention faster than nonthreatening in-group gazes does. However, participants took more time to suppress the influence of the gaze direction of threatening out-group gazes, compared to nonthreatening in-group gazes, in the incongruent condition, which means intergroup threatening gaze holds attention longer than nonthreatening gaze does. Imaging results demonstrated that threatening cues recruited a fronto-parietal network, previously implicated in holding attention and execution functions. Our results, therefore, suggest that the mechanisms underpinning gaze cuing evolved to be sensitive to intergroup threatening stimuli, possibly because it is hard to disengage from such intergroup threatening cues once they are detected.

As the primary determinants of the clinical behaviors of human cancers, the discovery of cancer stem cells (CSCs) represents an ideal target for novel anti-cancer therapies (Kievit et al., 2014). Notably, CSCs are difficult to propagate in vitro , which severely restricts the study of CSC biology and the development of therapeutic agents. Emerging evidence indicates that CSCs rely on a niche that controls their differentiation and proliferation, as is the case with normal stem cells (NSCs). Replicating the in vivo CSC microenvironment in vitro using three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds can provide means to effectively generate CSCs, thus enabling the discovery of CSC biology. This paper presents our study on a novel alginate-based platform for mimicking the CSC niche to promote CSC proliferation and enrichment. In this study, we used a versatile mouse 4T1 breast cancer model to independently evaluate the matrix parameters of a CSC niche – including the material’s mechanical properties, cytokine immobilization, and the composition of the extracellular matrix’s (ECM’s) molecular impact – on CSC proliferation and enrichment. On this basis, the optimal stiffness and concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA), as well as epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor immobilization, were identified to establish the platform for mimicking the 4T1 breast CSCs (4T1 CSCs) niche. The 4T1 CSCs obtained from the platform show increased expression of the genes involved in breast CSC and NSC, as compared to general 2D or 3D culture, and 4T1 CSCs were also demonstrated to have the ability to quickly form a subcutaneous tumor in homologous Balb/c mice in vivo . In addition, the platform can be adjusted according to different parameters for CSC screening. Our results indicate that our platform offers a simple and efficient means to isolate and enrich CSCs in vitro , which can help researchers better understand CSC biology and thus develop more effective therapeutic agents to treat cancer. This paper addresses a new problem, called semi-continuous batch scheduling, which arises in the heating-operation of tube-billets in the steel industry. Each heating furnace can be regarded as a semi-continuous batching machine, which can handle up to C jobs simultaneously. The jobs in the same batch enter and leave the machine semi-continuously, which differs from the traditional batching machine scheduling where the jobs in same batch have a starting time and a finishing time. In this paper the processing time of a batch depends on the capacity of the semi-continuous batching machine, the longest processing time of jobs in the batch and its size. The objectives are to schedule jobs on the machine so that the makespan and the total completion time are minimized. A schedule for a semi-continuous batching machine consists of a batching and sequencing for the batches. We propose the optimal properties of two different objective functions and present the different dynamic programming algorithms with a running time of O ( n 2 ) , respectively.

The present research investigated the relationship between intergroup threat and prosocial actions toward out-group members. We proposed that intergroup threat not only results in direct negative intergroup attitudes and behavior, but also promotes an indirect reduction in out-group helping. Study 1 (N = 54) was conducted in a realistic setting, whereas Study 2 (N = 92) employed an experimental context. Willingness to help (help intent) and monetary donation (help behavior) was compared between the threatening out-group and the non-threatening out-group. The results showed that when intergroup threat was experienced, more help was offered to the non-threatening out-group than the threatening out-group. The findings suggest that perceived intergroup threat attenuates prosocial behavior toward out-group members.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded to investigate electrophysiological correlates of aggression in high and low socioeconomic status (SES) participants who responded to violent and nonviolent images by using a choice reaction time paradigm. ERP data showed that violent images elicited a smaller N2 deflection than did nonviolent images in both high and low SES groups, but there was no difference in N2 amplitudes to aggressive and non-aggressive information as a function of SES. Notably, the latency of N2 in the low SES group was longer than that of the high SES group, suggesting slowness by the low SES group in deploying control responses. In addition, the low SES group exhibited significantly smaller P3 amplitudes to violent images, suggesting a reduction in brain activity known to reflect activation of the aversive motivational system, and this findings link this brain activity to aggressive behavior. As a whole the present findings show that participants low in SES seem to display similar psychophysiological responses to individuals high in aggression.

Previous studies have suggested the cross-cultural generalizability of a 5-factor structure for personality traits. In this article, we analyzed the utility of 2 versions (100-item and 50-item) of the IPIP Big-Five factor markers in both heterosexual (N = 633) and homosexual (N = 437) samples in China. Factor analysis within versions showed that both versions of these IPIP measures showed clear 5-factor orthogonal structures that were nearly identical to the American structure in both subject samples. The reliabilities of the five factors were quite high except for the 50-item measure of Agreeableness. The part-whole correlations between the 100-item and 50-item factors were high, as were the factor congruence coefficients between the heterosexual and the homosexual samples. Both versions of the IPIP Big-Five factor markers were strongly correlated with the scales from the Big-Five Inventory (BFI: John, Donahue, & Kentle, 1991), thus providing some concurrent validation in a Chinese context.

Humans shift their attention to follow another person's gaze direction, a phenomenon called gaze cueing. This study examined whether a particular social factor, intergroup threat, modulates gaze cueing. As expected, stronger responses of a particular in-group to a threatening out-group were observed when the in-group, conditioned to perceive threat from one of two out-groups, was presented with facial stimuli from the threatening and non-threatening out-groups. These results suggest that intergroup threat plays an important role in shaping social attention. Furthermore, larger gaze-cueing effects were found for threatening out-group faces than for in-group faces only at the 200 ms but not the 800 ms stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA); the specificity of the gaze-cueing effects at the short SOA suggests that threat cues modulate the involuntary component of gaze cueing.
