A novel design principle and fabrication method for whispering gallery mode optical multiple-resonator arrays have been proposed and demonstrated. The proposed design involves an inline cascade of optical micro-resonators (ICOMRs) coupled to multiple tapered sections along a single optical fiber. The multiple micro-resonators can be used for sensing of several parameters or a single parameter at multiple locations simultaneously. A simple and robust packaging technique has been developed ensuring stable and repeatable operation of the device. In order to demonstrate the capability of simultaneous multi- parameter sensing of the proposed ICOMRs structure, strain and temperature measurements were carried out using an inline cascade of two cylindrical micro-resonators: a tapered polymer optical fiber based micro-cylinder and a polydimethylsiloxane coated silica cylindrical micro-resonator. An Axial tensile strain sensitivity of 1.4 ± 0.04 pm/μe and temperature sensitivity of 330 ± 18 pm/°C have been demonstrated experimentally. The proposed ICOMRs design has many potential applications in distributed sensing, lab-on-a-fiber technology and optical communications.

This paper experimentally demonstrates a method for geometrical profiling of asymmetries in fabricated thin microfiber tapers with waist diameters ranging from ∼10 to ∼50 µm with submicron accuracy. The method is based on the analysis of whispering gallery mode resonances excited in cylindrical fiber resonators as a result of evanescent coupling of light propagating through the fiber taper. The submicron accuracy of the proposed method has been verified by SEM studies. The method can be applied as a quality control tool in fabrication of microfiber based devices and sensors or for fine-tuning of microfiber fabrication set-ups.

A silica gel coated microsphere resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measurements of ammonia (NH3) concentration in air with ultra-high sensitivity. The optical properties of the porous silica gel layer change when it is exposed to low (parts per million (ppm)) and even ultra-low (parts per billion (ppb)) concentrations of ammonia vapor, leading to a spectral shift of the WGM resonances in the transmission spectrum of the fiber taper. The experimentally demonstrated sensitivity of the proposed sensor to ammonia is estimated as 34.46 pm/ppm in the low ammonia concentrations range from 4 ppm to 30 ppm using an optical spectrum analyser (OSA), and as 800 pm/ppm in the ultra-low range of ammonia concentrations from 2.5 ppb to 12 ppb using the frequency detuning method, resulting in the lowest detection limit (by two orders of magnitude) reported to date equal to 0.16 ppb of ammonia in air. In addition, the sensor exhibits excellent selectivity to ammonia and very fast response and recovery times measured at 1.5 and 3.6 seconds, respectively. Other attractive features of the proposed sensor are its compact nature, simplicity of fabrication.

Monitoring of multiple physical parameters, such as humidity, temperature, strain, concentrations of certain chemicals or gases in various environments is of great importance in many industrial applications both for minimizing adverse effects on human health as well as for maintaining production levels and quality of products. In this paper we demonstrate two different approaches to the design of multi-parametric sensors using coupled whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical fiber micro-resonators. In the first approach, a small array of micro-resonators is coupled to a single fiber taper, while in the second approach each of the micro-resonators within an array is coupled to a different tapered fiber section fabricated along the same fiber length. Simultaneous measurement of relative humidity and ammonia concentration in air is demonstrated with an array of two microspheres with different functional coatings coupled to a single fiber taper. Sensitivity to ammonia of 19.07 pm/ppm ammonia molecules and sensitivity to relative humidity of 1.07 pm/% RH have been demonstrated experimentally. In the second approach, an inline cascade of two cylindrical micro-resonators fabricated by coupling to multiple tapered sections along a single optical fiber is demonstrated for measurement of strain and temperature simultaneously. A strain sensitivity of 1.4 pm/μe and temperature sensitivity of 330 pm/oC have been demonstrated experimentally. Both the proposed sensing systems have the potential for increase of the number of microresonators within an array for sensing of a larger number of parameters allowing for reduction of the overall cost of sensing system.

This paper presents a novel approach to measurements of low relative humidity (RH) values based on the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) effect in a small silica microsphere coated with a thin layer of Agarose hydrogel. The light from a narrow-linewidth tunable laser with a few GHz tuning range is launched into an adiabatic tapered fiber, which excites WGMs in the Agarose layer via evanescent coupling. Adsorption and desorption of water vapor by the Agarose layer in response to changes in ambient humidity lead to changes in the layer's refractive index, which in turn leads to a spectral shift of the WGM resonances. We experimentally demonstrate the WGMs spectral shift over a range of RH values from 1%RH to 25%RH. The proposed sensor displays linear response and is capable of measurement of low concentrations of water vapor (corresponding to about 11.7 ± 0.32 ppm water molecules in air). In addition, the proposed sensor offers the advantages of a very small form factor and good repeatability. Detailed studies of the sensor stability, cross sensitivity to temperature, response times, and hysteresis are also presented.

We propose a whispering gallery mode (WGM) strain sensor formed by a polymer-wire cylindrical micro resonator for strain measurement applications. WGMs are generated by evanescently coupling light into the polymer-wire resonator from a silica fiber taper fabricated by the micro heater brushing technique. Accurate and repeatable measurements of a strains up to one free spectral range (FSR) shift of the WGMs (corresponding to 0.33 % of the polymer-wire elongation, 3250 μɛ) are demonstrated experimentally with the proposed sensor. Practical packaging method for the proposed strain sensor on a glass microscope slide has also been realized making the sensor portable and easy to handle. The robustness of the packaged coupling system is confirmed by vibration tests. The performance of the packaged strain sensor is evaluated and compared with that for an unpackaged sensor.

A novel fiber optic sensing configuration for simultaneously measuring ammonia vapor (NH3) concentration and relative humidity (RH) in air is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system comprised two silica whispering gallery mode (WGM) microsphere resonators coated with different polymer layers. One of the microspheres was dip-coated with sol gel silica polymer and another with a 0.5 % wt./vol. agarose hydrogel. WGMs in both microspheres were excited simultaneously by evanescent coupling using a single adiabatic fiber taper. The optical properties of both coating layers change due to their exposure to ammonia and water molecules in the surrounding atmosphere, resulting in the spectral shifts of the WGM resonances relevant to each of the microspheres. By measuring the relevant WGMs' spectral shifts, the NH3 concentration in air and the RH can be determined simultaneously. The experimentally demonstrated sensitivity of the proposed sensor array to ammonia was estimated as 19.07 pm/ppm (NH3 molecules in air) and its sensitivity to relative humidity as 1.07 pm/% RH. Detailed studies of the coatings' cross-sensitivity and temperature dependence are also presented. The proposed sensor array is compact, highly sensitive and potentially low cost.

Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) excitation in a cylindrical microresonator formed by a section of silica optical fiber has been studied. Evanescent light coupling into the microresonator is realized using a tapered optical fiber, fabricated by a microheater brushing technique. Several types of silica fibers with different diameters are studied as microresonators, and the influence of the resonator's diameter on the excitation of WGMs is investigated. The excitation of WGMs in a cylindrical fiber resonator were studied with changes to the tilt angle between the microcylinder and the fiber taper in the range of angles from a perpendicular position (0 degrees) to large tilt angles (24 degrees). The evolution of the fiber taper transmission spectrum with the change of the tilt angle results in changes in the intensity, broadening of and a blue shift in the WGM resonance spectra. Overall losses in the taper transmission spectrum decrease with the increase of the taper tilt angle from its perpendicular position, followed by a complete disappearance of the WGM resonances at large tilt angles greater than 20 degrees.

An all-fiber magnetic field sensor based on whispering-gallery modes (WGM) in a fiber micro-resonator infiltrated with ferronematic liquid crystal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The cylindrical microresonator is formed by a 1 cm-long section of a photonic crystal fiber infiltrated with ferronematic materials. Both ferronematics suspensions are prepared based on the nematic liquid crystal 1-(trans-4-Hexylcyclohexyl)-4-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT) doped with rod-like magnetic particles in the first case and with spherical magnetic particles in the second case. WGMs are excited in the fiber microresonator by evanescent light coupling using a tapered fiber with a micron-size diameter. The Q-factor of the microresonator determined from the experimentaly measured transmission spectrum of the tapered fiber was 1.975 × 103. Under the influence of an applied magnetic field the WGM resonances experience spectral shift towards shorter wavelengths. The experimentally demonstrated sensitivity of the proposed sensor was −39.6 pm/mT and −37.3 pm/mT for samples infiltrated with rod like and spherical like ferromagnetic suspensions respectively for a magnetic field range (0-47) mT. Reducing the diameter of the cylindrical micro-resonator by tapering leads to enhancement of the magnetic field sensitivity up to −61.86 pm/mT and −49.88 pm/mT for samples infiltrated with rod like and spherical like ferromagnetic suspensions respectively for the magnetic field range (0-44.7) mT.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to measurements of low relative humidity (RH) levels based on the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) phenomenon in a silica microsphere resonator coated with Agarose. The spectral dips of the WGM resonances excited in the proposed sensor depend strongly on the changes in the refractive index (RI) of the coating material as well as the surrounding RI. A study of the humidity-induced RI changes in a thin Agarose layer, applied to the surface of a 162 μm-diameter silica microsphere was carried out by correlating the experimental results and numerical simulations performed using the perturbation theory. We experimentally demonstrate a linear sensing characteristic in a low-humidity range from 10% to 45% RH. The estimated quality factor of the micro-resonator is 2.82×106 and detection limit for the sensor is 0.057% RH, corresponding to the RI resolution of 8.4× 10−7 RIU.

A mechanical strain assisted technique for spectral tuning of whispering gallery modes (WGM) in a cylindrical micro-resonator formed by a polymer optical fiber (POF) is investigated. WGMs in the POF-based micro-cylinder are excited by evanescent light coupling using a tapered single mode silica fiber. WGMs observed in the transmission spectrum of the silica fiber taper have a high extinction ratio of up to 19 dB and a quality factor (Q-factor) of up to 2.64 × 104. The application of tensile axial strain (με) in the range from 0 to 1746 με (0.17%) to the POF micro-resonator results in a linear shift of the WGM spectrum with a sensitivity of 0.66 pm/με. Under the influence of the applied strain, the WGMs undergo a blue shift and return to their initial spectral positions after the strain is decreased. The proposed strain tunable POF micro-resonator has potential applications in fiber optic sensing and tunable micro lasers.

A new type of fiber optic relative humidity (RH) sensor based on an agarose coated silica microsphere resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the micro resonator are excited by evanescent coupling using a tapered fiber with ~3.3 µm waist diameter. A change in the relative humidity of the surrounding the resonator air induces changes in the refractive index (RI) and thickness of the Agarose coating layer. These changes in turn lead to a spectral shift of the WGM resonances, which can be related to the RH value after a suitable calibration. Studies of the repeatability, long-term stability, measurement accuracy and temperature dependence of the proposed sensor are carried out. The RH sensitivity of the proposed sensor depends on the concentration of the agarose gel which determines the initial thickness of the deposited coating layer. Studies of the micro- resonators with coating layers fabricated from gels with three different Agarose concentrations of 0.5%, 1.125% and 2.25 wt./vol.% showed that an increase in the initial thickness of the coating material results in an increase in sensitivity but also leads to a decrease of quality factor (Q) of the micro resonator. The highest sensitivity achieved in our experiments was 518 pm/%RH in the RH range from 30% to 70%. The proposed sensor offers the advantages of a very compact form factor, low hysteresis, good repeatability, and low cross sensitivity to temperature.
