- Abstract
In this chapter, we develop the concept of ‘planetary literacies’ and suggest it is useful for thinking through critical literacies for the planet in response to the urgency of children’s concerns about climate change, as expressed in international protests led by Greta Thunberg. We draw on the concept of ‘the Anthropocene’, the proposed new geological age, prompted by human induced changes to the Earth’s biosphere. Drawing on posthuman and new materialist methodologies and the concept of ‘The Anthropocene’ acts as a provocation to more sustainably connect nature and culture, economy and ecology, and the natural and human sciences, in order to address species loss, environmental destruction and global warming. Through an example from teacher education in South Africa, we suggest that our concept of planetary literacies aims to incorporate new political understandings of subjectivity. In this sense, we propose that in pushing the boundaries, critical literacies could significantly include new posthuman, and new materialist approaches, to address the urgency of climate change.

- Abstract
Direct smelting of printed circuit boards (PCBs) could potentially be a viable method for recovering materials from electronic wastes, particularly in countries having no existing primary Cu smelter. A suitable slag system is required that could be an effective medium to dissolve refractory metals and oxides from complex PCBs into the molten stream while producing a metal alloy containing the more valuable components. The metal and slag streams could then be separated by their gravitational differences. Addition of a suitable flux could lower the liquidus temperature of the generated slag and bring operational flexibility as well as a reduction in energy consumption. Phase equilibria of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2O slags were studied by thermal equilibration and quenching. The primary phases of the quenched slags were identified, and their equilibrium compositions determined by electron probe microanalysis. Liquidus temperatures of the slags were bracketed within an uncertainty of ± 10–20 degrees C. Anorthite (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2), gehlenite (2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2), pseudowollastonite (CaO·SiO2) and larnite (2CaO·SiO2) were observed as primary phases. Progressive doping by Na2O substantially changed the slag liquidus temperature, shifting the primary phase from anorthite to pseudowollastonite and larnite, and gehlenite to larnite. The liquidus temperature decreased significantly with increasing Na2O in slags with CaO/SiO2 (C/S) ratios of 0.3 and 0.6, while the liquidus temperature increased for slags with a C/S ratio of 1.0. The solid solubility of Na2O in the phases was quantified. Finally, the relevance of the phase equilibria study of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2O system was discussed with regard to the optimum design of smelting with a focus on value recovery from e-waste., Direct smelting of printed circuit boards (PCBs) could potentially be a viable method for recovering materials from electronic wastes, particularly in countries having no existing primary Cu smelter. - Abstract
This paper addresses the entanglements of the earth’s becoming in a multi site cross hemisphere study of the infinite moments of young children’s world making, recorded in multimodal videos, still images, and children’s productions. The postqualitative project was informed by new materialist and posthuman theorising. The researchers conducted their research at seven different early learning centres in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and Finland. At the end of the project the researchers came together to make sense of the data across all sites and realised that their postqualitative data was BIG and that their ‘little big data’ was generated in the context of the increasing impact of ‘big Big Data.’ We discuss our approaches to posthuman and new materialist big data in order to create a conversation between the two and to highlight the alternative methodological processes we developed to make sense of large bodies of postqualitative data.

- Abstract
Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Methods: We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515. Findings: Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were

Camouflaging is a frequently reported behaviour in autistic people, which entails the use of strategies to compensate for and mask autistic traits in social situations. Camouflaging is associated with poor mental health in autistic people. This study examined the manifestation of camouflaging in a non-autistic sample, examining the relationship between autistic traits, camouflaging, and mental health. In addition, the role of executive functions as a mechanism underpinning camouflaging was explored. Sixty-three non-autistic adults completed standardised self-report questionnaires which measured: autistic traits, mental health symptoms, and camouflaging behaviours. In addition, a subset (n=51) completed three tests of executive function measuring inhibition, working memory, and set-shifting. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyse data. Results indicated that autistic traits are not associated with mental health symptoms when controlling for camouflaging, and camouflaging predicted increased mental health symptoms. Camouflaging did not correlate with any measure of executive function. These findings have implications for understanding the relationship between autistic traits and mental health in non-autistic people and add to the growing development of theory and knowledge about the mechanism and effects of camouflaging.

- Abstract
Effective environmental assessment and management requires quantifiable biodiversity targets. Biodiversity benchmarks define these targets by focusing on specific biodiversity metrics, such as species richness. However, setting fixed targets can be challenging because many biodiversity metrics are highly variable, both spatially and temporally. We present a multivariate, hierarchical Bayesian method to estimate biodiversity benchmarks based on the species richness and cover of native terrestrial vegetation growth forms. This approach uses existing data to quantify the empirical distributions of species richness and cover within growth forms, and we use the upper quantiles of these distributions to estimate contemporary, "best-on-offer" biodiversity benchmarks. Importantly, we allow benchmarks to differ among vegetation types, regions, and seasons, and with changes in recent rainfall. We apply our method to data collected over 30 yr at ~35,000 floristic plots in southeastern Australia. Our estimated benchmarks were broadly consistent with existing expert-elicited benchmarks, available for a small subset of vegetation types. However, in comparison with expert-elicited benchmarks, our data-driven approach is transparent, repeatable, and updatable; accommodates important spatial and temporal variation; aligns modeled benchmarks directly with field data and the concept of best-on-offer benchmarks; and, where many benchmarks are required, is likely to be more efficient. Our approach is general and could be used broadly to estimate biodiversity targets from existing data in highly variable environments, which is especially relevant given rapid changes in global environmental conditions.

- Abstract
Habitat assessments often require observers to estimate tree hollows in situ, which can be costly, destructive and prone to bias. An alternative is to count the number of trees above a specific size. The size at which a tree develops hollows differs substantially among tree species. To assist with setting standards for habitat assessment we defined a large tree as the size at which a species has a 50% probability of supporting a 2-cm diameter hollow. We estimated this size for 68 species using a meta-analysis based on 18 data sources. We found that large tree size ranged from 21 to 106 cm diameter at breast height (DBH). Each species was attributed to vegetation types (formations and classes) to explore variation in large tree sizes. Despite considerable variation within vegetation classes and formations, our results suggest that a large tree size of approximately 50 cm DBH may be appropriate for most vegetation types, with lower estimates in semi-arid vegetation (~30 cm) and higher estimates in wet sclerophyll forests (~80 cm). Our estimates provide empirical support for defining large trees at species vegetation class and formation levels within New South Wales, and highlights the need for more empirical data.

- Abstract
Direct-to-blister becomes economical when the total slag fall is low as a proportion of the copper produced. As the slag fall is influenced by the amount of iron in the concentrate, the process is more useful for chalcocite and bornite concentrates than for those containing chalcopyrite. Tests of the ISASMELT direct-to-blister process at the Mufulira copper smelter (Zambia) suggested it would not be suitable due to a high proportion of Si in the oxide minerals in comparison with Fe contained in the sulphides. It was thought that the slag would be prone to sudden uncontrollable foaming, Thermodynamic modelling has been carried out of various slag systems, which were subsequently tested at pilot scale. A lime-silica-iron oxide slag was found to have the lowest slag make, lower dissolved copper and hence lowest copper losses. A future smelter flowsheet has been defined, comprising a single ISASMELT direct-to-blister furnace, an electric slag cleaning furnace, and appropriately designed anode furnaces. The process will be used at the Mutanda smelter (Democratic Republic of Congo) where the carrolite content is significant, with provision made for a possible second stage of electrothermic reduction., Direct-to-blister becomes economical when the total slag fall is low as a proportion of the copper produced. - Abstract
This paper examines the potential of posthumanism to enable a reconceptualization of young children’s literacies from the starting point of movement and sound in the more-than-human world. We propose movement as communicative practice that always occurs as a more complex entanglement of relations within more-than-human worlds. Through our analysis, an understanding of sound emerged as a more-than-human practice that encompasses children’s linguistic and non-linguistic utterances, and which occurs through, with, alongside movement. This paper draws on data from two different research studies; in the first two year old children in the UK banged on drums and marched in a museum. In the second study, two young children in Australia chose sites for their own research and produce a range of emergent literacies from vocalisation and ongoing stories to installations. We present examples of ways in which speaking, gesturing and sounding, as emergent literacy practices, were not so much about transmitting information or intentionally designed signs, but about embodied and sensory experiences in which communication about and in place occurred through the body being and moving in place. This paper contributes to the field of posthuman early childhood literacies by foregrounding movement as central to in-the-moment becoming. Movement and sound exist beyond parameters of human perception, within a flat ontology (MacLure, 2013) in which humans are decentred and everything exists on the same plane, in constant motion. Starting from movement in order to conceptualise literacy offers, therefore, an expanded field of inquiry into early childhood literacy. In the multimodal literacy practices analysed in this paper, meaning and world emerge simultaneously, offering new forms of literacy and representation and suggesting possibilities for defining or conceptualising literacy in ways that resist anthropocentric or logocentric framings.

Current production of metallurgical-grade Si relies on an energy-intensive process based on complex solid-liquid-gas reactions in an electric submerged arc furnace using graphite electrodes. This is followed by a slow Siemens process to grow ultra-high purity solar-grade silicon. Due to increasing decarbonization and environmental pressures that the metal industry is facing, new sustainable process technologies are required. This study is part of a broader investigation on pyrometallurgical electrorefining of silicon in the presence of slag and provides the basis for impurity behaviour in Si-slag system without an imposed electromotive force. For the first time, experimental technique of drop-quenching followed by direct phase analysis techniques of electron microprobe analyzer (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) were employed in silicon processing environment. The experiments were carried out to define the distribution coefficients of minor elements (B, P) between Si and SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 at silica and alumina crucibles under inert Ar gas at 1500 °C. The results presented are highly novel and show the influence of slag composition and process conditions on the element properties. The experimental results were compared to the computational simulation results by FactSage© using its FToxid and FSupsi databases. The results can be utilized to design Si–slag process for primary ore resources and for secondary silicon-rich scraps in pyrometallurgical smelting environment, as well as to potentially improve the thermochemical databases of computational simulation programs.

This paper examines the institutionalisation of psychiatric treatment in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Taking up the work of Michel Foucault, the paper examines how those suffering from mental illness were classified as disruptive and unfit for society, subsequently labelled mad and institutionalised in facilities more akin to semi-judicial structures than medical facilities. McMurphy, having manipulated a transfer for himself from a state work farm to what he perceives will be the less rigorous confines of a mental institution, epitomises the disruptive presence of the madmen, bringing a world of disorder and chaos to the staff and patients of the mental ward. Self-proclaimed as the head “bull goose looney”, McMurphy reflects the counter-culture movements of the 1960s in the United States in his rejection of the rules and regulations imposed upon him by what amounts to a totalitarian system of control. A wild indomitable force of nature, McMurphy becomes a totem for Chief and the other patients, an embodiment of the human spirit the patients have forfeited inside the institutional system.

- Abstract
Aim: A ‘good’ classification should provide information about the composition and abundance of the species within communities, if it serves as an informative surrogate for biodiversity. A natural way to formalize this is with a predictive model, where group membership (clusters) is the predictor, and multivariate species data (site by species matrix) is the response. In this study, we aimed to develop a predictive model-based framework for evaluating the predictive performance of alternative classifications of vegetation communities, and apply it to make objective and automated decisions about classification structure. Methods: We used GLMs fit to multivariate species data to predict occurrence of individual species with site groupings. We used AIC to estimate predictive performance of alternative models to: (1) identify optimal partitioning of sites among multiple competing flexible-β clustering solutions; (2) identify species that contribute most to compositional differences between clusters (i.e. characteristic species); and (3) automatically merge clusters to maximize expected predictive performance using an iterative pruning approach. Using field data from southeastern Australia, and simulated data, we demonstrate our approach for common ecological data types (presence/absence, counts, cover–abundance scores, percentage cover). We supply all code and data required for these analyses. Results: AIC was a useful metric for assessing competing classification solutions. Our method produced outputs that were simple to interpret and required few subjective choices to be made by the user, while performing similarly to the popular OptimClass assessment methodology. Characteristic species defined by predictive performance were consistent between data types, and had good general agreement with existing methods for defining characteristic species. Using model performance to iteratively refine clustering produced classifications with better than expected predictive performa

Background Communication between professionals, patients and families about palliative and end-of-life care after stroke is complex and there is a need for educational resources in this area. Methods To explore the key learning needs of healthcare professionals, a multidisciplinary, expert group developed a short electronic survey with open and closed questions, and then distributed it to six UK multiprofessional networks and two groups of local clinicians. Results A total of 599 healthcare professionals responded. Educational topics that were either definitely or probably needed were: ensuring consistent messages to families and patients (88%); resolving confiicts among family members (83%); handling unrealistic expectations (88%); involving families in discussions without them feeling responsible for decisions (82%); discussion of prognostic uncertainties (79%); likely mode of death (72%); and oral feeding for 'comfort' in patients at risk of aspiration (71%). The free-text responses (n = 489) and 82 'memorable' cases identified similar themes. Conclusion Key topics of unmet need for education in end-of-life care in stroke have been identified and these have infiuenced the content of an open access, web-based educational resource. This is a travel story - it is specif-ic, particular, and yet situated also in the flows of people, media, languages, disciplines and ideas in a globalised world. It concerns the travel of English language teachers from Australia to work in international aid programs in East Timor; it tells of a teacher's mission, and how that mission was translated into a spatial practice through experiences of embodied engagement in the contact zone (Pratt, J 992). I start the story by outlining the way English language teaching practices arc shaped within dominant narratives that privilege time over space, and then take a closer look at how one teacher slipped the temporal bonds to engage with an embodied sense of place.

ING-INF/01 Elettronica - Abstract
At this time, GaAs PHEMTs exhibit higher power output than InP HEMTs at 60 and 94 GHz. InP HEMTs, however, feature power-added efficiency values that exceed GaAs PHEMTs by about 5 to 20 percentage points at 94 GHz. As a consequence, InP HEMTs remain a superior candidate for millimeter-wave power applications. The reason for the inferior output power of InP HEMTs lies in their relatively small on-state and off-state breakdown voltages. This paper reviews the state of the art of millimeter-wave power HEMT technology as well as recent advances in understanding of breakdown phenomena. It also discusses the prospects and challenges facing InP HEMTs in performance, reliability and low-cost manufacturing.

We have developed a methodology to diagnose the physical mechanisms limiting the manufacturing yield of millimeter-wave power InAlAs/InGaAs HEMTs on InP. A statistical analysis was carried out on DC figures of merit obtained from a large number of actual devices on an experimental wafer. Correlation studies and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the results indicated that variations in Si delta-doping concentration introduced during MBE accounted for more than half of the manufacturing variance. Variations in the gate-source distance that is determined by the electron-beam alignment in the gate formation process were the second leading source of manufacturing variance.

- Abstract
In the continuous converting of copper concentrates to blister copper (single-stage copper making), some copper reports to the slag phase. Copper recovery from slag can be by flotation and recycle, leaching and electrowinning, and thermal reduction. The flotation option is compared with thermal reduction in an electric arc furnace. Operating and capital costs of industrial copper-making processes are compared and used to determine the optimum single-stage copper-making flowsheet. It is found that the most economical slag treatment option is flotation., In the continuous converting of copper concentrates to blister copper (single-stage copper making), some copper reports to the slag phase.
