Nanostructured Co3O4 with near-cubic morphology was synthesised using the solvothermal method, and a non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensor (Co3O4–CuNPs/Pt) was successfully constructed by dropping and potentiostatic depositing technologies. The obtained Co3O4 and Co3O4–CuNPs were characterised and investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis of glucose was performed using the amperometric (i–t) method, and a plot of current difference versus concentration of glucose was linear in the range 0.5–336 μM, with a linear correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9989 and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.43 μM. When the linear range was reduced to 0.5–76.5 μM, R2 and LOD were 0.9997 and 0.17 μM, respectively. The sensitivity of the sensor was evaluated as 3.58 × 104 and 4.03 × 104 μA μM−1 cm−2 for the above two linear ranges, respectively. This novel sensor produced satisfactory reproducibility and stability and was applied to monitor trace amounts of glucose in human serum samples.

A novel 3D nano-flower-like Cu/multi-layer molybdenum disulfide composite (CuNFs/MoS2) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) has been successfully constructed. It was a highly sensitive and selective non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose biosensor. The morphology of the obtained CuNFs-MoS2 nano-particles was investigated with the use of a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The physicochemical properties of the modified electrode were characterized at each of the construction stages with the use of an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The new sensor combined the advantages of MoS2 and CuNFs, and exhibited high electro-catalytic activity toward H2O2 and glucose. Quantitative analysis of H2O2 and glucose was carried out with the use of the amperometric i-t method. Linear ranges were obtained between 0.04-1.88 μM and 1.88-35.6 μM for H2O2 and 1-20 μM and 20-70 μM for glucose, and their corresponding limits of detection (LOD) were 0.021 μM and 0.32 μM. This novel sensor was successfully applied for the quantitative analysis of H2O2 in tap water and glucose in human serum samples.

A simple, environmentally friendly hydrothermal method was used to prepare strongly luminescent, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with the use of Chinese yams as a source of carbon and nitrogen. Such NCDs have an average size of 2.7±1.4 nm; they emit blue light at 420 nm and have a quantum yield of up to 9.3%. Thus, carboxyfluorescein (FAM)-DNA macro-molecules were assembled on the surfaces of the NCDs, and stabilised by strong π-π stacking; the so formed hybrid nano-sensors were found to have an ultra-sensitive response to 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). A strong emission and enhancement of yellow radiation was observed from FAM. Furthermore, due to the specific interactions between DNA and Hg(2+), which resulted in the formation of the T-Hg(2+)-T (T: thymine base) complex - a large, conjugated system, which formed between NCDs, DNA and 6-MP, was broken up. Thus, the fluorescence from FAM was quenched. The detection limits for 6-MP and Hg(2+) were 0.67 and 1.26 nM, respectively. The proposed method was applied for the determination of 6-MP in human serum and Hg(2+) in water samples with satisfactory results.

A novel electrochemical sensor was constructed by depositing copper/copper oxide nano-particles on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to produce a Cu@CuO/GCE. The morphology and composition of this modified electrode were characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The electrochemical properties of the novel modified GCE electrode were studied using various electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The catalytic performance of the sensor was studied with the use of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) under optimized conditions. The constructed Cu@CuO/GCE sensor showed significantly better electrocatalytic activity for the analysis of the H 2 O 2 in comparison to the Cu/GCE or GCE. The novel sensor produced a linear response for H 2 O 2 analysis in the range of 0.005–8 mM and the detection limit was 0.23 μM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained for H 2 O 2 analyses of tap and lake waters. This performance compares very favorably with the results from several other commonly used techniques for analysis of H 2 O 2 .

Solids are widely identified as a carrier of harmful pollutants in stormwater runoff exerting a significant risk to receiving waters. This paper outlines the findings of an in-depth investigation on heavy metal adsorption to solids surfaces. Pollutant build-up samples collected from 16 road sites in residential, industrial, and commercial land uses were separated into four particle size ranges and analyzed for a range of physicochemical parameters and nine heavy metals including Iron (Fe), Aluminum (Al), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni), and Copper (Cu). High specific surface area (SSA) and total organic carbon (TOC) content in finer particle size ranges were noted, thus confirming strong correlations with heavy metals. On the basis of their physicochemical characteristics, two different types of solids originating from traffic and soil sources were identified. Interaction of isoprenaline (ISO) with calf-thymus DNA was studied by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. The behavior of ISO was investigated at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPSV); ISO was oxidized and an irreversible oxidation peak was observed. The binding constant K and the stoichiometric coefficient m of ISO with DNA were evaluated. Also, with the addition of DNA, hyperchromicity of the UV-vis absorption spectra of ISO was noted, while the fluorescence intensity decreased significantly. Multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) chemometrics method was applied to resolve the combined spectroscopic data matrix, which was obtained by the UV-vis and fluorescence methods. Pure spectra of ISO, DNA and ISO-DNA complex, and their concentration profiles were then successfully obtained. The results indicated that the ISO molecule intercalated into the base-pairs of DNA, and the complex of ISO-DNA was formed.

Zeolite-based technology can provide a cost effective solution for stormwater treatment for the removal of toxic heavy metals under increasing demand of safe water from alternative sources. This paper reviews the currently available knowledge relating to the effect of properties of zeolites such as pore size, surface area and Si:Al ratio and the physico-chemical conditions of the system such as pH, temperature, initial metal concentration and zeolite concentration on heavy metal removal performance. The primary aims are, to consolidate available knowledge and identify knowledge gaps. It was established that an in-depth understanding of operational issues such as, diffusion of metal ions into the zeolite pore structure, pore clogging, zeolite surface coverage by particulates in stormwater as well as the effect of pH on stormwater quality in the presence of zeolites is essential for developing a zeolite-based technology for the treatment of polluted stormwater. The optimum zeolite concentration to treat typical volumes of stormwater and initial heavy metal concentrations in stormwater should also be considered as operational issues in this regard. Additionally, leaching of aluminium and sodium ions from the zeolite structure to solution were identified as key issues requiring further research in the effort to develop cost effective solutions for the removal of heavy metals from stormwater.

This article discusses the outcomes of a research project on nutrients build-up on urban road surfaces. Nutrient build-up was investigated on road sites belonging to residential, industrial and commercial land use. Collected build-up samples were separated into five particle size ranges and were tested for total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and sub species of nutrients, namely, NO2-, NO3-, TKN and PO4(3-). Multivariate analytical techniques were used to analyse the data and to develop detailed understanding on buildup. Data analysis revealed that the solids loads on urban road surfaces are highly influenced by factors such as land use, antecedent dry period and traffic volume. However, the nutrient build-up process was found to be independent of the type of land use. It was solely dependent on the particle size of solids build-up. Most of the nutrients were associated with the particle size range150 microm. Therefore, the removal of particles below 150 microm from road surfaces is of importance for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from road surface solids build-up. It is also important to consider the difference in the composition of nitrogen and phosphorus build-up in the context of designing effective stormwater quality mitigation strategies.

This overview focuses on the application of chemometrics techniques to the investigation of soils contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals, because these two important and very diverse groups of pollutants are ubiquitous in soils. We highlight the salient features of studies carried out in the microenvironments and recreational environments of humans in the context of the multivariate statistical techniques available across the boundaries of disciplines used in soil studies. We pay particular attention to techniques employed in the geosciences that may be effectively utilized for environmental soil studies. We also discuss classical multivariate approaches that may be used in isolation or as complementary methods to these. Chemometrics techniques widely applied in atmospheric studies for identifying sources of pollutants or for determining the importance of contributions of contaminant sources to a particular site have seen little use in soil studies, but they may be employed effectively in such investigations. Suitable programs are also available for suggesting measures of mitigation in cases of soil contamination, and we also consider these. Specific techniques reviewed include: • pattern-recognition techniques [e.g., Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Fuzzy Clustering (FC) and Cluster Analysis (CA); • geostatistical tools [e.g., variograms, Geographical Information Systems (GISs), contour mapping and kriging]; and, • source-identification and contribution-estimation methods [e.g., Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF), and PCA on Absolute Principal Component Scores (PCA/APCS)]. Mitigating measures to limit or to eliminate pollutant sources may be suggested through the use of ranking analysis and multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDMs), mainly represented in this review by studies employing the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) and its associated graphic output, Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid (GAIA).

Photochemistry has made significant contributions to our understanding of many important natural processes as well as the scientific discoveries of the man-made world. The measurements from such studies are often complex and may require advanced data interpretation with the use of multivariate or chemometrics methods. In general, such methods have been applied successfully for data display, classification, multivariate curve resolution and prediction in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, engineering, medical research and industry. However, in photochemistry, by comparison, applications of such multivariate approaches were found to be less frequent although a variety of methods have been used, especially with spectroscopic photochemical applications. The methods include Principal Component Analysis (PCA; data display), Partial Least Squares (PLS; prediction), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN; prediction) and several models for multivariate curve resolution related to Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC; decomposition of complex responses). Applications of such methods are discussed in this overview and typical examples include photodegradation of herbicides, prediction of antibiotics in human fluids (fluorescence spectroscopy), non-destructive in- and on-line monitoring (near infrared spectroscopy) and fast-time resolution of spectroscopic signals from photochemical reactions. It is also quite clear from the literature that the scope of spectroscopic photochemistry was enhanced by the application of chemometrics. To highlight and encourage further applications of chemometrics in photochemistry, several additional chemometrics approaches are discussed using data collected by the authors. The use of a PCA biplot is illustrated with an analysis of a matrix containing data on the performance of photocatalysts developed for water splitting and hydrogen production. In addition, the applications of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) ranking methods and Fuzzy Clustering are demonstrated with an analysis of water quality data matrix. Other examples of topics include the application of simultaneous kinetic spectroscopic methods for prediction of pesticides, and the use of response fingerprinting approach for classification of medicinal preparations. In general, the overview endeavours to emphasise the advantages of chemometrics’ interpretation of multivariate photochemical data, and an Appendix of references and summaries of common and less usual chemometrics methods noted in this work, is provided.

Naturally occurring macromolecules present at the epicuticular wax/stalk tissue interface of sugarcane were investigated using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Investigations of water, cellulose, and wax-cellulose interrelationships were possible using NIRS methods, where in the past many different techniques have been required. The sugarcane complex interface was used as an example of typical phenomena found at plant leaf/stalk interfaces. This detailed study showed that sugarcane cultivars exhibit spectral differences in the CH(n), water OH, and cellulose OH regions, reflecting the presence of epicuticular wax, epidermis, and ground tissue. Spectrally complex water bands (5276 cm(-1) and 7500-6000 cm(-1)) were investigated via freeze-drying experiments which revealed sequentially a complex band substructure (7500-6000 cm(-1)), a developing weak H-bonding system ( approximately 7301 cm(-1)), and strong H-bonding ( approximately 7062 cm(-1)) assigned to water-cellulose interactions. Principal component analysis techniques clarified complex band trends that developed during the desorption experiment. Bands from wax-free stalk were minimized in the 4327-4080 cm(-1) region (C--H(n) vibrational modes associated with long chain fatty compounds), while bands from the stalk tissue (particularly lignin and moisture) became more pronounced. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry have been applied to determine the adsorption of oil on selected adsorbates: sand, organo-clay and raw cotton. Thermal analysis provides evidence for the interaction and physical adsorption of the diesel oil on the adsorbates. Sand adsorbed diesel to around 33% by mass through weak physical interactions and appeared to fractionate the diesel components. The organo-clays more strongly adsorbed the diesel as evidenced by higher thermal decomposition temperatures. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows a strong interaction between the organo-clay and the diesel oil. Diesel is effectively adsorbed on organo-clay through adsorption and partitioning and is not removed from the organo-clay until significantly higher temperatures. Cotton displayed a very high adsorption/absorption capacity. A shift in the peak at 110°C (compared with pure diesel at 90°C) suggests an interaction between the diesel compounds and the cotton fibres as diesel is being retained at higher temperatures and more energy is required to evaporate the diesel. DSC was used to determine the strength of the diesel adsorption on the sand, organo-clay and cotton. The use of adsorbent materials to adsorb oil from oil spills is of great significance in modern society. One method of proving the effectiveness of an adsorbent material is through thermoanalytical techniques.

The need to find the most efficient material for the clean-up of oil/fuel spills both at sea and on land is of extreme importance. Generally, this requires material selection based upon the adsorption properties of selected sorbent materials such as sand, swelling clays, organo-clays and cotton fibres. These adsorption properties are a function of the surface characterisation where hydrophobic and oleophilic properties are essential. From BET analysis, the adsorption isotherm of the selected materials was Types II and IV in the IUPAC classification scheme. The main adsorption mechanism for these sorbents occurred on the external surface of the material in the pores or capillaries. ESEM studies indicate that cotton capillaries contribute significantly to the adsorption process of oil. In addition, the presence of surface wax on cotton–cellulose fibre facilitated the uptake by: (a) providing a relatively hydrophobic surface for sorption of organics; and (b) providing a low surface energy environment for the capillaries to aid in oil transport. Cotton fibre was observed to have several key properties such as hydrophobicity, good affinity for hydrocarbons, rapid adsorption on contact, and high adsorption and retention through interfibre capillaries. This research provides the basis for selection of cotton–cellulose fibres compared to common and other novel alternatives such as sand and organo-clays, respectively.

Summary Physico-chemical properties of surface water and groundwater samples from some developing countries have been subjected to multivariate analyses by the non-parametric multi-criteria decision-making methods, PROMETHEE and GAIA. Complete ranking information necessary to select one source of water in preference to all others was obtained, and this enabled relationships between the physico-chemical properties and water quality to be assessed. Thus, the ranking of the quality of the water bodies was found to be strongly dependent on the total dissolved solid, phosphate, sulfate, ammonia–nitrogen, calcium, iron, chloride, magnesium, zinc, nitrate and fluoride contents of the waters. However, potassium, manganese and zinc composition showed the least influence in differentiating the water bodies. To model and predict the water quality influencing parameters, partial least squares analyses were carried out on a matrix made up of the results of water quality assessment studies carried out in Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Egypt, Thailand and India/Pakistan. The results showed that the total dissolved solid, calcium, sulfate, sodium and chloride contents can be used to predict a wide range of physico-chemical characteristics of water. The potential implications of these observations on the financial and opportunity costs associated with elaborate water quality monitoring are discussed.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common age-associated pathologies, which inevitably leads to dementia and death. The aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides on plaques in brain tissue is strongly associated with AD. The possible link between aluminum and AD still remains controversial. In this work, the aggregation of Aβ40 induced by Al(III) was investigated with the use of the fluorescence quenching method, UV–visible and circular dichroism spectroscopies as well as the atomic force microscopy technique. The results demonstrated that Al(III) induced the transformation of the initial random coil structure to the β-sheet configuration in the Aβ40 peptides. These structural changes facilitated the aggregation of Aβ40. Also, the binding constant was calculated with the use of the multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) chemometrics method. Studies of kaolinite surfaces are of industrial importance. One useful method for studying the changes in kaolinite surface properties is to apply chemometric analyses to the kaolinite surface infrared spectra. A comparison is made between the mechanochemical activation of Kiralyhegy kaolinites with significant amounts of natural quartz and the mechanochemical activation of Zettlitz kaolinite with added quartz. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, the preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluations (PROMETHEE) and geometrical analysis for interactive assistance (GAIA). The clear discrimination of the Kiralyhegy spectral objects on the two PC scores plots (400–800 and 800–2030 cm−1) indicated the dominance of quartz. Importantly, no ordering of any spectral objects appeared to be related to grinding time in the PC plots of these spectral regions. Thus, neither the kaolinite nor the quartz are systematically responsive to grinding time according to the spectral criteria investigated. The third spectral region (2600–3800 cm−1, OH vibrations), showed apparent systematic ordering of the Kiralyhegy and, to a lesser extent, Zettlitz spectral objects with grinding time. This was attributed to the effect of the natural quartz on the delamination of kaolinite and the accompanying phenomena (i.e., formation of kaolinite spheres and water). The mechanochemical activation of kaolinite and quartz, through dry grinding, results in changes to the surface structure. Different grinding times were adopted to study the rate of destruction of the kaolinite and quartz structures. This relationship (i.e., grinding time) was classified using PROMETHEE and GAIA methodology.

Elements emitted from the exhausts of new Ford Falcon Forte cars powered by unleaded petrol (ULP) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were measured on a chassis dynamometer. The measurements were carried out in February, June and August 2001, and at two steady state driving conditions (60 and 80kmh1). Thirty seven elements were quantified in the exhaust samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The total emission factors of the elements from the exhausts of ULP cars were higher than those of LPG cars at both engine speeds even though high variability in the exhaust emissions from different cars was noted. The effect of the operating conditions such as mileage of the cars, engine speed, fuel and lubricating oil compositions on the emissions was studied. To investigate the effects of these conditions, multivariate data analysis methods were employed including exploratory principal component analysis (PCA), and the multi-criteria decision making methods (MCDM), preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE) and geometrical analysis for interactive aid (GAIA), for ranking the cars on the basis of the emission factors of the elements. PCA biplot of the complete data matrix showed a clear discrimination of the February, June and August emission test results. In addition, (i) platinum group elements (PGE) emissions were separated from each other in the three different clusters viz. Pt with February, Pd with June and Rh with August; (ii) the motor oil related elements, Zn and P, were particularly associated with the June and August tests (these vectors were also grouped with V, Al and Cu); and (iii) highest emissions of most major elements were associated with the August test after the cars have recorded their highest mileage. Extensive analysis with the aid of the MCDM ranking methods demonstrated clearly that cars powered by LPG outperform those powered by ULP. In general, cars tested in June perform better than those tested in August, which suggested that mileage was the key criterion of car performance on the basis of elemental emission factors.

Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate raw cotton acetylation using acetic anhydride/4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) catalyst blend without solvent. The Raman data further confirm successful acetylation as shown by FTIR that was demonstrated previously to be highly sensitive for determining the level of acetylation. However, the Raman peaks are much weaker than the FTIR bands. Nevertheless, the variations of the extent of acetylation estimated from both Raman and FTIR spectra with weight percent gain due to acetylation (WPG) were observed to follow the same pattern. The degrees of acetylation calculated from Raman data were also found to increase linearly with that calculated from the more sensitive FTIR technique. Raman technique is thus suitable for further development as an analytical tool for determining the acetylation level of natural cellulose fibres. Raman data have also shown that the acetylation reaction reduces the crystallinity of cotton.

A magnetic and fluorescent nano-composite was prepared. It comprised of a core of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), a silica shell and satellitic Au nano-clusters (AuNCs) capped with bovine serum albumin (BSA). This nano-composite has many desirable properties, e.g. magnetism, red emission, high water solubility, and high resistance to photo-bleaching. On addition of the analyte, 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) or indeed other similar thiols, AuNCs formed aggregates because the existing cross-links within the Fe3O4 NPs@SiO2 and AuNC structure were broken in favor of the gold-thiol bonds. On suitable irradiation of such aggregates, red fluorescence was emitted at 613 nm. It decreased significantly as a function of the added 6-MP concentration, and the quenching ratio (F0 - F) / F0 was related linearly to the concentration of 6-MP in the range of 0.01 to 0.5 μmol L(-1). The detection limit was 0.004 μmol L(-1) (S/N=3). The method was strongly selective for 6-MP in the presence of oxidants, phenols, heavy-metal ions, and especially bio-thiols.

The effectiveness of hydrothermal treatment for the destruction of the organic content of sludge waste was investigated. The sludge sampled in this study contained approximately 2% solids. The experimental program consisted of hydrothermal treatment experiments conducted in a batch reactor at temperatures between 100 and 250 °C, with the addition of an oxidant (hydrogen peroxide) in the range of 0–150% with reference to TCOD, and reaction times of up to 60 min. The results suggested that the availability of oxidant, reaction temperature and reaction time were the determining factors for COD removal. A significant fraction of the COD remaining after treatment consisted of the dissolved COD. The results confirmed that hydrothermal treatment proceeds through hydrolysis resulting in the production of dissolved organic products followed by COD removal through oxidation. Two MCDM chemometrics methods, PROMETHEE and GAIA, were applied to process the large data matrix so as to facilitate the selection of the most suitable hydrothermal conditions for sludge destruction. Two possible scenarios were produced from this analysis—one depended on the use of high temperatures and no oxidant, while the second offered a choice of compromise solutions at lower temperatures but with the use of at least some oxidant. Thus, for the final choice of operating conditions, the decision maker needs local knowledge of the costs and available infrastructure. In principle, such information could be added as further criteria to the data matrix and new rankings obtained.

This paper presents a study undertaken to evaluate site suitability for sewage effluent renovation based on physico-chemical characteristics of the soil. The results obtained showed that as the soil becomes acidic, the phosphorus concentration in the soil reduces accordingly. The chloride ion concentration was found to be a reliable indicator for evaluating the soil capacity to remove nitrogen. A high cation exchange capacity (CEC) can enhance the renovation of sewage effluent. Soils with high quartz content had a low CEC with high organic matter content (OM) being able to compensate. Therefore, an understanding of the micro-nutrients in the soil, organic matter content and chloride ion concentration are important. To facilitate a multi-variate approach for site selection, multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, PROMETHEE and GAIA, were applied for analysis of a sequence of three matrices consisting of 8, 16, and 48 soil site objects, respectively, and seven soil property parameters. Matrix models and the interpretation of results are discussed in detail. From these analyses, PROMETHEE II net outranking flows, ϕ , found that two sites were always among the top three ranks of the three matrix models, which suggested that they were the most suitable for sewage effluent renovation. The criteria CEC and OM, were particularly important for the selection of these better sites, but pH and Cl − attributes discriminated the weaker performing sites from the better ones; as well the PO 4 3− and the NH 3 –N criteria were in general opposition to CEC, OM, pH and Cl − but were much less effective as discriminators. Consideration of net outranking flows suggested an approach method for the selection of other possibly suitable sites for sewage effluent renovation.

This paper reviews the synthesis and the absorbing properties of the wide variety of porous sorbent materials that have been studied for application in the removal of organics, particularly in the area of oil spill cleanup. The discussion is especially focused on hydrophobic silica aerogels, zeolites, organoclays and natural sorbents many of which have been demonstrated to exhibit (or show potential to exhibit) excellent oil absorption properties. The areas for further development of some of these materials are identified.

The self-assembly of layered molybdenum disulfide-graphene (MoS2-Gr) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by electrostatic attraction into a novel hybrid nanomaterial (HRP-MoS2-Gr) is reported. The properties of the MoS2-Gr were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). UV-vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicate that the native structure of the HRP is maintained after the assembly, implying good biocompatibility of MoS2-Gr nanocomposite. Furthermore, the HRP-MoS2-Gr composite is utilized as a biosensor, which displays electrocatalytic activity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with high sensitivity (679.7 μA mM(-1)cm(-2)), wide linear range (0.2 μM-1.103 mM), low detection limit (0.049 μM), and fast amperometric response. In addition, the biosensor also exhibits strong anti-interference ability, satisfactory stability and reproducibility. These desirable electrochemical properties are attributed to the good biocompatibility and electron transport efficiency of the MoS2-Gr composite, as well as the high loading of HRP. Therefore, this biosensor is potentially suitable for H2O2 analysis in environmental, pharmaceutical, food or industrial applications.

The degradation of azo dyes such as Orange I_??_IV was investigated in an electrolyte solution containing chloride or bromide ions as halide ions with electrolysis. In the presence of halide ions, the electrolyzed degradation was accomplished because of the generated electrophilic halonium ions as active species with electrolysis that involve initial attack at azo groups. It was presumed that these degradations were due to the molecular structure of dyes relating to the existence of azo-hydrazone equilibria in hydroxyazo dyes and electron-donating group in aminoazo dyes. In the case of an electrolyte solution containing chloride ion, the degradation of dyes was significantly influenced by the pH of this electrolyte and decrease with rising pH. The ability of degradation with electrolysis was larger in bromide ion than that in chloride ion and the pH of electrolyte had no influence on the degradation in the case of bromide ion, compared with chloride ion.

A novel, simple and direct fluorescence method for analysis of complex substances and their potential substitutes has been researched and developed. Measurements involved excitation and emission (EEM) fluorescence spectra of powdered, complex, medicinal herbs, Cortex Phellodendri Chinensis (CPC) and the similar Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis (CPA); these substances were compared and discriminated from each other and the potentially adulterated samples (Caulis mahoniae (CM) and David poplar bark (DPB)). Different chemometrics methods were applied for resolution of the complex spectra, and the excitation spectra were found to be the most informative; only the rank-ordering PROMETHEE method was able to classify the samples with single ingredients (CPA, CPC, CM) or those with binary mixtures (CPA/CPC, CPA/CM, CPC/CM). Interestingly, it was essential to use the geometrical analysis for interactive aid (GAIA) display for a full understanding of the classification results. However, these two methods, like the other chemometrics models, were unable to classify composite spectral matrices consisting of data from samples of single ingredients and binary mixtures; this suggested that the excitation spectra of the different samples were very similar. However, the method is useful for classification of single-ingredient samples and, separately, their binary mixtures; it may also be applied for similar classification work with other complex substances.

Electrochemical behavior of nitrofurazone (NFZ) was investigated with the use of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods. The pH-dependence of NFZ was studied at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in ethanol/Britton–Robinson buffer (30:70), and short-lived nitro-radicals were generated by the reduction of NFZ at high pHs (>7.0). In the presence of DNA, the DPV peak current of NFZ decreased and the peak potential shifted negatively, which indicated that there was an electrostatic interaction between NFZ and DNA. An electrochemical dsDNA/GCE biosensor was prepared to study the DNA damage produced in the presence NFZ; this process was followed with the use of the Co(phen) 3 2+ electroactive probe. Also, the oxidation peaks of guanosine (750 mV) and adenosine (980 mV) indicated that DNA damage was related directly to the nitro-radicals. Experiments demonstrated that DNA damage occurred via two different steps while NFZ was metabolized and nitro-radicals were produced. Novel work with AFM on the NFZ/DNA interaction supported the suggestion that in vivo , the nitro-radicals were more cytotoxic than the NFZ molecules. A linear DPV calibration plot was obtained for NFZ analysis at a modified dsDNA/GCE (concentration range: 2.50×10 −6 –3.75×10 −5 mol L −1 ; limit of detection: 8.0×10 −7 mol L −1 ), and NFZ was determined successfully in pharmaceutical samples.

Authentication of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) has become important because they can be adulterated with relatively cheap herbal medicines similar in appearance. Detection of such adulterated samples is needed because their presence is likely to reduce the pharmacological potency of the original TCM and, in the worst cases, the samples may be harmful. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) analytical method which was supported by multi-variate calibration, e.g. partial least squares regression (PLSR) and radial basis function artificial neural networks (RBF-ANN), in order to quantify the TCM and the adulterants. In this work, Cynanchum stauntonii (CS), a commonly used TCM, in mixtures with one or two adulterants — two morphological types of TCM, Cynanchum atrati (CA) and Cynanchum paniculati (CP), were determined using NIR reflectance spectroscopy. The three sample sets, CS adulterated with CA or CP, and CS with both CA and CP, were measured in the range of 800–2500 nm. Both PLSR and RBF-ANN calibration models provided satisfactory results, even at an adulteration level of 5 mass %, but the RBF-ANN models with better root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values for CS, CA, and CP arguably performed better. Consequently, this work demonstrates that the NIR method of sampling complex mixtures of similar substances such as CS adulterated by CA and/or CP is capable of producing data suitable for the quantitative analysis of mixtures consisting of the original TCM adulterated by one or two similar substances, provided the spectral data are interrogated by multi-variate methods of data analysis such as PLS or RBF-ANN.

A sensitive kinetic spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of four flavor enhancers—maltol, ethyl maltol, vanillin, and ethyl vanillin—in food samples. The method was based on the reduction of iron(III) by the four analytes in a sulfuric acid medium (0.012 mol/L), and the subsequent interaction of iron(II) with hexacyanoferrate(III) to form the strongly colored Prussian blue complex, which exhibited an absorption maximum at 800 nm. The optimized method had linear calibrations over the concentration ranges of 0.2–2.8 mg/L for maltol, ethyl maltol, and vanillin, as well as 0.2–1.8 mg/L for ethyl vanillin; the corresponding detection limits were 0.07, 0.07, 0.06, and 0.06 mg/L, respectively. Calibration models were constructed from the original and frst-derivative spectral data with the use of partial least-squares (PLS) and principal component regression chemometrics methods. Ultimately, the proposed analytical procedure was successively applied for the determination of the four compounds in commercial food samples with the use of a PLS calibration based on the frst-derivative spectral data. The results were comparable with those from a reference HPLC method.

Road dust contain potentially toxic pollutants originating from a range of anthropogenic sources common to urban land uses and soil inputs from surrounding areas. The research study analysed the mineralogy and morphology of dust samples from road surfaces from different land uses and background soil samples to characterise the relative source contributions to road dust. The road dust consist primarily of soil derived minerals (60%) with quartz averaging 40-50% and remainder being clay forming minerals of albite, microcline, chlorite and muscovite originating from surrounding soils. About 2% was organic matter primarily originating from plant matter. Potentially toxic pollutants represented about 30% of the build-up. These pollutants consist of brake and tire wear, combustion emissions and fly ash from asphalt. Heavy metals such as Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd primarily originate from vehicular traffic while Fe, Al and Mn primarily originate from surrounding soils. The research study confirmed the significant contribution of vehicular traffic to dust deposited on urban road surfaces.

A rapid kinetic method for the simultaneous determination of levodopa, dopamine, and dobutamine was examined and developed. It was based on a consecutive reaction of a reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) by catecholamines, followed by the complexation of Cu(I) with neocuproine to form a yellow product in an acetic acid-acetate buffer. Spectrophotometric data were recorded at 453 nm (wavelength at the yellow complex absorption maximum) for 300 s. Linear calibrations were obtained in the concentration ranges of (0.08–1.44) × 10−5 mol L−1, (0.08–1.44) × 10−5 mol L−1, and (0.16–1.44) × 10−5 mol L−1 for levodopa, dopamine, and dobutamine, respectively. A variety of multivariate calibration models was developed for simultaneous analysis of the three analytes; while most models produced satisfactory prediction results for synthetic samples, the hybrid linear analysis method was arguably the best-performing (relative prediction error, RPET = 6.6 %). The proposed method was applied to an analysis of spiked rabbit serum samples and the results showed good agreement with the high performance liquid chromatography measurements.

The interaction of salbutamol (Sal), an animal growth promoter, with DNA was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and fluorescence spectroscopy. An irreversible reduction was observed from the cyclic voltammograms, and the reaction mechanism involved a one-electron change irreversible oxidation. In the presence of DNA, the DPV peak current decreased and the Sal peak shifted to higher potentials, indicating that Sal interacted with DNA to form an intercalation Sal-DNA complex. In addition, reaction binding parameters were extracted from the DPV data with the use of the multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) method; the binding constant and ratio were found to be (2.0±0.5)×10(5) M(-1) and 1:1, respectively. Quantitative voltammetric analysis of Sal was performed in the concentration range of 3.02×10(-6) to 1.23×10(-4) molL(-1), and it was found that the detection limit was 5.11×10(-7) molL(-1) in the presence of 1.00×10(-6) molL(-1) DNA. The method was applied for the determination of Sal in spiked urine and human serum samples, and the calibration was successfully verified.

A study of the polarization of copper and mild steel electrodes in the absence and presence of cotton fabric in an alkaline environment has been carried out. In each case passive film formation on the metal substrate is followed by the OER reaction. For those experiments in which the electrodes were in loose contact with the fabric, exhaustion of OH− ion in the solution between the metal substrate and the fabric resulted in a decrease in the rate of the OER. This can be attributed to a change in mechanism from that in an alkaline to that in an acid environment. The interaction of the electrogenerated O2 with the cotton cellulose leads to degradation of the latter; this is comparable to the “catalytic damage” observed during H2O2 bleaching of cellulose. The increased damage observed to the fabric compared to when the O2 is generated on Pt supports the role of both Cu and Fe as catalysts for the O2 cellulose reaction.

Catalytic damage observed during normal hydrogen peroxide bleaching of cotton fabric can be duplicated in experiments in which a cotton fabric, loosely wrapped about a platinum anode, comes in contact with electro-generated oxygen. Polarization of the anode up to +4000 mV(SSE) in an alkaline environment results in the formation of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) oxides followed by evolution of O 2 . Due to rapid exhaustion of OH − ion (the source of the O 2 ) the pH at the Pt/fabric interface drops from approx. 11 to 3. The polarization curve reveals the formation of a peak and this behaviour is explained in terms of a change in the mechanism of the OER from that in an alkaline environment to one in an acid medium.

Organo-clays synthesised by the ion exchange of sodium in Wyoming Na-montmorillonite (SWy-2-MMT) with three surfactants: (a) octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (ODTMA), formula C(21)H(46)NBr; (b) dodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDDMA), formula C(22)H(48)BrN; and (c) di(hydrogenated tallow)dimethylammonium chloride were tested for hydrocarbon adsorption. Using diesel, hydraulic oil, and engine oil an evaluation was made of the effectiveness of the sorbent materials for a range of hydrocarbon products that are likely to be involved in land-based oil spills. It was found that the hydrocarbon sorption capacity of the organo-clays depended upon the materials and surfactants used in the organo-clay synthesis. Greater adsorption was obtained if the surfactant contained two or more hydrocarbon long chains. Extensive utilisation of chemometrics principally with the aid of MCDM methods, produced models which consistently ranked the organo-clays well above any of the competitors including commercial benchmark materials. Thus, the use of organo-clays for cleaning up oil spills is feasible due to its many desirable properties such as high hydrocarbon sorption and retention capacities, hydrophobicity. The negative effects of the use of organo-clays for oil-spill cleanup are the cost, the biodegradability, and recyclability of the organo-clays.

The binding of trazodone hydrochloride (TZH), an antidepressant drug, to bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been investigated by fluorescence spectroscopic analysis. The fluorescence emission of BSA (λem=350 nm) was quenched by TZH while that of this ligand was enhanced (λem=443 nm). The spectral behavior was consistent with the static quenching mechanism, and the apparent binding constant, K a (1.05×104 l mol−1) as well as binding site number, n (∼1), were estimated. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from the measured data at different temperatures showed that the binding of TZH to BSA involved predominantly hydrophobic interactions as well as smaller contributions from electrostatic forces. Phenylbutazone and ibuprofen were utilized as competitive markers for sites I and II, respectively, in the interaction of TZH with BSA. This competitive displacement procedure indicated that the likely binding was site I, i.e., subdomain IIA, and this was supported by the observation that up to 50% of this site ...

The interaction of quercetin-Cu(II) complex with calf thymus DNA was investigated with the use of Neutral Red (NR) dye as a spectral probe by the application of UV-vis spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that both quercetin-Cu(II) complex and the NR molecule can intercalate into the double helix of the DNA. The 2:1 quercetin:Cu(II) complex (estimated binding constant = 2.85 x 10(9)) is stabilized by intercalation in the DNA (binding constant, K[quercetin-Cu(II)-DNA] = (1.82 +/- 0.20) x 10(5) M-1), and displaces the NR dye from the NR-DNA complex in a competitive reaction. Cyclic voltammetry studies confirm the intercalation reaction and show that the ratio (K-R/K-O) of binding constants for the reduced and oxidized forms of the metal complex is 2.05. Furthermore, the alternative least squares (ALS) method was applied to resolve a complex two-way array of the absorption spectra data. This yielded the equilibrium concentration profiles of each component in the reaction (NR, NR-DNA and quercetin-Cu(II)) as well as the corresponding pure spectra. The extracted profiles showed that at equilibrium the [NR-DNA] and [NR] trends decreased and increased symmetrically, respectively, with approximately linear behaviour being observed below 10 x 10(-6) mol L-1 of the added quercetin-Cu2+ complex. Thereafter, these trends converged asymptotically. The free [quercetin-Cu(II)] trend-line at equilibrium was linear over the whole range of the complex added. It was possible to estimate the approximate value of the equilibrium constant of the exchange process (approximately 5 x 10(-1)) involving the intercalation of the quercetin-Cu(II) complex. The study of kaolinite surfaces is of industrial importance. In this work we report the application of chemometrics to the study of modified kaolinite surfaces. DRIFT spectra of mechanochemically activated kaolinites (Kiralyhegy, Zettlitz, Szeg, and Birdwood) were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and multicriteria decision making (MCDM) methods, PROMETHEE and GAIA. The clear discrimination of the Kiralyhegy spectral objects on the two PC scores plots (400-800 and 800-2030 cm(-1)) indicated the dominance of quartz. Importantly, no ordering of any spectral objects appeared to be related to grinding time in the PC plots of these spectral regions. Thus, neither the kaolinite nor the quartz, are systematically responsive to grinding time according to the spectral criteria investigated. The third spectral region (2600-3800 cm(-1)OH vibrations), showed apparent systematic ordering of the Kiralyhegy and, to a lesser extent, Zettlitz spectral objects with grinding time. This was attributed to the effect of the natural quartz on the delamination of kaolinite and the accompanying phenomena (i.e., formation of kaolinite spheres and water). With the MCDM methods, it was shown that useful information on the basis of chemical composition, physical properties and grinding time can be obtained. For example, the effects of the minor chemical components (e.g., MgO, K(2)O, etc.) indicated that the Birdwood kaolinite is arguably the most pure one analyzed. In another MCDM experiment, some support was obtained for the apparent trend with grinding time noted in the PC plot of the OH spectral region.
