This study analyses Compound Fins (CFs) in turbulent airflows using numerical and experimental methods. CFs combine Novel Plate Fin Heatsinks (NPFHSs) [1] and Slotted fins (S8 and S9) [2] and are compared to plain plate fins. Numerical modelling of turbulent airflow is conducted using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and ANSYS is used for the analysis. The CFs are manufactured using selective laser melting and validated experimentally. CF variations are categorized as CF18, CF19, CF28 and CF29 as described in Table 1. CFs outperform plain fins, with CF18, CF19, CF28, and CF29 showing higher Nu numbers by 52.7%, 51.2%, 44.8%, and 47.9%, respectively. CF18 and CF19 have 22.9% and 21.7% higher heat transfer coefficients than NPFHS1, respectively. CF28 and CF29 have 19.1% and 22.4% higher heat transfer coefficients than NPFHS2, respectively. CF18 and CF19 have higher air pressure drops than plain fins, while CF28 and CF29 have lesser pressure loss. The study concludes that CFs perform better than plain fins and are lighter. The methodology ensures the accuracy and reliability of the findings, making the study a valuable contribution to electronic cooling.

Abstract In this research nylon fibers wastes (NF) were fabricated into porous sheet using a phase inversion technique to be utilized as an adsorbent materials for Congo red dye (CR). The fabricated sheet denoted as NS was characterized using FTIR and XRD. The surface studies of the adsorbent materials using SEM and BET analysis reveals a highly pores structure with an average pore volume 0.61 cc/g and BET surface area of 767 m2/g. The adsorption studies of fabricated NS were employed into CR at different parameters as pH, effect of time and dye concentration. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies were more fit to Langmuir and pseudo second order models. The maximum adsorption capacity qmax reached 188 mg/g with removal percentage of 95 for CR concentration of 400 mg/L at pH 6 and 0.025 g NS dose for 10 ml CR solution. The regeneration study reveals a prominent adsorption behavior of NS with removal % of 88.6 for CR (300 mg/L) after four adsorption desorption cycles. Effect of incorporation of NaonFil Clay to NS was studied using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) modeling and reveals that 98.4% removal of CR could be achieved by using 19.35% wt. of fiber with 8.2 g/L dose and zero clay, thus at a predetermined parameters studies of NanoFil clay embedded into NS, there are no significant effect for %R for CR.

Gas to Liquid (GTL) fuel is considered a clean alternative fuel and has been given much attention to replacing conventional fuel. Evaporation behaviour and droplet lifetime are critical aspects that need to be determined as these aspects can affect the fuel spray properties and improve the combustion process. In this study, a set of GTL–diesel fuel blends are prepared, which are G20, G50, G80, and G100 (the number represents the GTL percentage fuel ratio in the fuel blends). Subsequently, using a single droplet drop test on the hot plate (Leidenfrost effect), the GTL fuel blends droplet lifetime and evaporation behaviour are visualised using a high-speed camera connected to long-distance microscopy. An image processing system and a MatLab were used to measure and analyse the droplet evaporation data. Comparing the fuel characterisation of the GTL fuel and conventional diesel fuel, the GTL fuel shows a lower value in all properties tested except for the calorific value, cetane number, and vapour pressure. The qualitative results through the Leidenfrost effect have shown that increasing the GTL fuel ratio (20% to 100%) decreases the heating phase duration (37.3 % to 14.4 %) and evaporation rate (1.29 mm 2/s to 1.10 mm 2/s) while increasing their steady evaporation phase duration and droplet lifetime. The shorter period to achieve steady evaporation is beneficial as the spray inside the chamber has a limited time to evaporate for combustion.

Abstract Purpose We aimed to compare the impact of urethral transection after different techniques of bulbar urethroplasty on erectile function outcome. Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed the records for 245 patients who underwent different urethroplasty techniques for bulbar urethral stricture between February 2013 and January 2021. The comparison between the transecting and non-transecting cohorts included patients’ demographics, clinicopathological features of the urethral stricture, post-urethroplasty erectile function, and success of urethroplasty. Outcomes were erectile function status verified by IIEF5-15 score at preoperative, three months, and 12 months post-surgery. We defined Post-urethroplasty ED as a decrease of 5 points or more. Results The urethroplasty success rate of the entire cohort was 86.9% after a mean follow-up of 45.59 ± 21 months. Out of 245 patients, 18 (7.3%) experienced 90-day complications. Transecting bulbar urethroplasty techniques were performed in 74 patients (30.2%), while non-transecting techniques were performed in 171 patients (69.8%). there were no differences between the cohorts regarding urethroplasty success (87.8% Vs. 86.5%, Mantel-Cox test p = 0.93) or postoperative complications (8.1% Vs. 7%, p = 0.73). Transient ED was evident in the transecting cohort as reported in 8.1% compared to 2.9% for the non-transecting (p = 0.07).Still, but de novo permanent ED was comparable (4.1% Vs. 2.9%, p = 0.65), for transecting and non-transecting, respectively. Conclusions Unfortunately, some patients who undergo transecting techniques of bulbar urethroplasty experience transient erectile dysfunction that can improve within the first post- urethroplasty year; however, de novo permanent erectile dysfunction is uncommon after different techniques of bulbar urethroplasty and is not predisposed by urethral transection.

Gas to Liquid (GTL) fuel is considered a clean and alternative fuel and has been given much attention as a replacement for conventional fuels. This paper reviews and discusses the GTL fuel characteristics and the effects of GTL fuel on performance and emission in engines, considering previous research works. The properties of GTL fuel, such as a higher cetane number than diesel, improve its ignition and, therefore, burn more efficiently. It also helps to eliminate the knock and noise produced by the engine, resulting in lower emissions of pollutants. The energy density of GTL can potentially be higher than that of diesel, depending on its specific chemical composition and carbon cuts in the fuel, which provides more energy per unit volume, resulting in better brake-specific fuel consumption. The major finding is that the ability of GTL fuel to be implemented in existing ICE without significant modification should enhance the involvement of GTL in the automotive sector. GTL fuel has lower emissions of particulate matter, sulphur oxides, and nitrogen oxides, which are harmful pollutants that contribute to air pollution and respiratory problems. In contrast, the brake power from the usage of GTL has shown a lower value than diesel. This is caused by the lower volumetric heating value of the GTL fuel. The production process is expensive and requires significant energy, which may offset some of the environmental benefits. Additionally, the infrastructure for producing and distributing GTL fuel has yet to be widely available, which makes it difficult to adopt as a widespread replacement for conventional fuels.

Abstract THz radiation detection using FET devices has attracted increasing attention lately. In this paper, we further study a simulated model of FET rectification detection in short channel length. To achieve this, both physics-based analytic model and a detailed TCAD simulation were contacted and compared. The analytical model provided detailed dependence of the response on the channel length below the extension length of the radiation. However, the simulation results were validated by comparison with the experimental data to confirm the validity of the theoretical model. These results present a new model of rectification for short channel lengths and its dependence on the extinction of AC signal through the channel.

Background Although cardiovascular mortality (CVM) rates in the United States have been declining overall, our study evaluated whether this holds true for areas with increased social deprivation. Methods and Results We used county‐level cross‐sectional age‐adjusted CVM rates (aa‐CVM) (2000–2019) linked to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Social Vulnerability Index (SVI–2010). We grouped counties as per SVI (Groups I 0–0.2, II 0.21–0.4, III 0.41–0.6, IV 0.61–0.8, and V 0.81–1) and calculated the relative change in the aa‐CVM between 2000 to 2003 and 2016 to 2019. We used adjusted linear regression analyses to explore the association between a higher SVI and temporal aa‐CVM improvement; we studied this temporal change in aa‐CVM across subgroups of race, sex, and location. The median aa‐CVM rate (per 100 000) was 272.6 (interquartile range [IQR]: 237.5–311.7). The aa‐CVM was higher in men (315.6 [IQR: 273.4–363.9]) than women (221.3 [IQR: 189.6–256.7]), and in Black residents (347.2 [IQR: 301.1–391.1]; P

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a unique type of concrete that has a lot of advantages in the construction sector. There is no risk for reinforced UHPC elements in an aggressive environment or coastal region, unless cracking occurs due to extra-loading or inaccurate structural design. For that, there is a need for this study to be considered. The core concentration of this study is towards understanding the shear behavior of pre-cracked beams cast with UHPC as affected by durability. This program presents materials used to reach the main aim of the present study. 72 specimens were conducted to study UHPC physical and mechanical properties to be compared with traditional normal concrete (NC). Moreover, 10 RC beams were cast to investigate the shear behavior of RC-UHPC beams with dimensions of 100 mm, 150 mm, and 1300 mm. Five non-exposure beams and five exposure beams were corroded by an accelerated corrosion cell, and half the potential cell readings were recorded. Obtained results for specimens provide that; UHPC eliminates deflection with high modulus of elasticity, in chloride penetration test UHPC is 200 times less than NC, and the reduction in bond strength test after corrosion exposure is 66.24 % and 1.69 % for NC and UHPC specimens, respectively. For pre-carking UHPC beams at 80 % of experimental ultimate load; cracking resistance for un-corroded beams exceeds the corroded beams by 250 %. The residual flexural capacities for corroded beams pre-cracking up to 80 % of E.U.L. are 61.6 % and 119 % for NC and UHPC beams, respectively. UHPC is much better than NC in corrosive environments.

Therapeutic Area: ASCVD/CVD Risk Reduction Background: Increased place-based social deprivation is known to be associated with higher cardiovascular mortality (CVM) rates. While CVM rates in the US have been declining overall, our study evaluated whether this holds true for areas with increased social deprivation. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we used county-level CVM rates between 2000 and 2019 and linked it to the CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), and analyzed data from 3052 counties nationwide. We grouped counties as per their SVI (Group I 0 - 0.2, Group II 0.21 - 0.4, Group III 0.41 - 0.6, Group IV 0.61 - 0.8,and Group V 0.81 – 1) and obtained the relative change in the age adjusted CVM between 2000-2003 and 2016-2019. We studied the temporal change in CVM across SVI groups, overall and separately according to race (white vs black), sex (men vs women) and county location (metro vs non-metro). We used adjusted linear regression analyses to explore the association between increasing SVI and the relative change in CVM. Results: The median county-level age-adjusted CVM (aa-CVM) rate (per 100,000) overall was 272.6 [IQR: 237.5, 311.7]. Men (315.6 [IQR: 273.4, 363.9]) had higher aa-CVM rates than women (221.3 [IQR: 189.6, 256.7]), and blacks (347.2 [IQR: 301.1, 391.1]) had higher aa-CVM rates than whites (258.9 [IQR: 226, 299.1], p < 0.001). The aa-CVM for SVI I (233.6 [IQR: 214.8, 257.0]) was significantly higher than group V (323.6 [IQR: 277.2, 359.2], p < 0.001). The relative reduction in CVM was significantly higher for SVI group I (32.2% [IQR: 24.2%, 38.4%]) than SVI group V (27.2% [IQR: 19%, 34.1%]) counties. An increasing SVI index was associated with lower relative percent decline in the age-adjusted CVM (model coefficient -6.01 [0.73], p < 0.001). Conclusions: We observed higher age-adjusted CVM in more socially deprived counties in the US. While the overall age-adjusted CVM has declined in the past 20 years, this improvement is substantially lesser in more socially deprived counties.

The present work is a biodiversity study on some caprellids from the Northern Red Sea coast with their occurrence and distribution in different habitats in relation to water depth. From late 2019 to early 2020, a total of 67 individuals were collected from Hurghada and Shalateen, Red Sea coast by snorkeling and SCUBA diving, from five different depths (0.5, 5, 15, 25, and 35 m). A total of 7 caprellid species belonging to six genera and two subfamilies were recorded from Hurghada site, and only 5 species were recorded from Shalateen site. Phtisica marina Slabber, 1769, Metaprotella sp., and Deutella sp. were recorded for the first time from the Red Sea waters. These new records are significant in terms of increasing the known species diversity of the Red Sea fauna. Paradeutella multispinosa was the most abundant caprellid and was represented by 46.3% at Shalateen, followed by Hemiaegina minuta (31.7%) at Shalateen and (50.0%) at Hurghada. SIMPER analysis showed that the caprellids, P. multispinosa, H. minuta and P. marina, were the most contributing species to the dissimilarity between the two studied sites. Depth and habitat composition directly influenced the total caprellid abundance and diversity at both sites.

This study aimed to detect the impact of bacteriospermia on semen parameters and sperm DNA fragmentation. This prospective case–control study was conducted over a period of 9 months. Samples were collected from andrology outpatient clinic attendants of Cairo University Hospitals. We enrolled 68 semen samples divided into two groups: a study group (34 semen samples with bacteriospermia) and a control group (34 semen samples without bacteriospermia). The characteristics of the semen, including morphology, motility, count, liquefaction, viscosity, pH, volume, and appearance, were evaluated according to the standard protocols. Patients with and without bacteriospermia had a comparable liquefaction time ( p = .343), semen appearance and color ( p = 1.00), semen pH ( p = 1.00), velocity ( p = .163), and total sperm count ( p = .451). Patients with bacteriospermia were associated with lower progressive motility ( p = .001), nonprogressive motility ( p = .032), total motility ( p = .001), and normal forms ( p = .001). The prevalence of abnormal semen analysis was 64.71% in the study group compared with 35.29% in the control group. Staphylococcus aureus (67.6%) and Escherichia coli (14.7%) were the most commonly detected organisms. Samples from which Methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated showed significant abnormalities in both progressive motility and normal morphology of sperm. Bacteriospermia has deteriorative effects on sperm quality parameters, such as semen volume, sperm motility, and sperm normal morphology.

Abstract Background Urethral reconstruction in complex hypospadias poses a significant challenge. We report our 10-year experience with buccal mucosa graft (BMG) in the two-stage repair of complex hypospadias and compare its results to the skin graft. Methods We retrieved the data of 15 patients with complex hypospadias who underwent two-stage repair using the BMG at our institution. The data were compared to 13 patients who underwent skin graft during the same period. Results The median follow-up duration was 14 (12–17) months in the BMG group and 16 (13.5–22.5) months in the skin graft group. Patients in the BMG had a numerically lower incidence of the diverticulum, wound dehiscence, fistula, and infection than the skin graft group, however, without statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). On the other hand, the incidence of meatal stenosis and urethral stricture was significantly lower in the BMG group (0% each) compared to the skin graft group (30.8% each; p = 0.02). At the same time, there were no reported cases of graft contracture. The frequency of donor site morbidity was significantly higher in the skin graft group compared to the BMG group (p = 0.003). The BMG led to a lower incidence of postoperative straining than the skin graft (0% vs. 38.5%, p = 0.03). Only one patient needed revision surgery after skin graft, compared to no case in the BMG (p = 0.27). Conclusion The present study demonstrates the feasibility and durable outcomes of the BMG in the setting of two-stage repair of complex hypospadias.

Purposes: Penile fracture (PF) with associated urethral injury has been described as a rare condition yet a serious urological emergency. We conducted this systematic review to address the current literature concerning the etiology, presentations, intra-operative findings, site of injury, and complications of PF with associated urethral injury, Materials and Methods: The present systematic review was limited to human-based studies published in English language, and reporting clinical data on PF cases with associated urethral injuries. A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted on five electronic databases from their inception to May 2022: Medline via PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and EBSCO host. Results: A total of 15 studies were included encompassing 1671 patients with PF. Out of 1665 patients with PF retrieved from the case series studies, 65 patients had associated urethral injuries giving a point prevalence of 3.9%. The vast majority of the patients had blood on the meatus and hematuria suggestive of urethral injury (57/59; 96.6%). Forty patients had partial urethral disruption and the rest of the patients had a complete rupture. All patients received primary urethroplasty as the main modality of treatment. The median hospital stay was two days and the median duration of transurethral catheterization was 21 days. Five patients (8.5%) developed urethral stricture; other complications included penile curvature (6.7%), palpable fibrosis (6.7%), and erectile dysfunction (3.4%). Conclusions: Urethral injuries are uncommon, but serious findings, in patients with PF. Primary urethroplasty appears to achieve satisfactory outcomes with a low incidence of short and long-term complications.

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of surgeon-tailored polypropylene mesh (STM) through a needle-less single incision mini-slings (SIMS) vs. standard trans-obturator tape (TOT) in the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Methods: We conducted an open-label randomized controlled trial that included women with SUI. Eligible women were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either standard TOT or SIMS techniques. All procedures were performed using a surgeon-tailored polypropylene mesh and monofilament tape. Results: A total of 60 women were included. The mean operative time was significantly longer in the standard TOT group. The mean bleeding rate was significantly higher in the standard TOT group (87.6 ± 10.6 cc) compared to the SIMS group (60.0 ± 8.1 cc). There was no urethral injury in both groups. Transient thigh pain occurs in 12 cases (40 %) of the standard TOT and no cases in the SIMS group (p < 0.001). After three months, there was no significant statistical difference between the result of the two groups as regard to cure or improvement rate. No failed cases were reported in both groups (p = 0.64). Likewise, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding patients' satisfaction rate. Conclusions: SIMS was not inferior to standard TOT. STM SIMS is a mini-invasive, relatively safe, reproducible, easy to perform in a short time, with excellent patient tolerability and minimal pain, allowing early return to work and economically effective surgical procedure for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria isolated from Saudi Arabian patients in the Al-Qassim region. We also examine the application of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA- Polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) in genetic diversity of the strains in use. In this study, we have used 29 different clinical samples from Al-Qassim hospitals which consists of wound swabs, blood, sputum and urine. Clinical samples were streaked onto sterile Petri dishes containing nutrient agar media using sterile dry swabs. Additionally antibiotic sensitivity tests, micro scan walkway susceptibility tests and extraction of genomic DNA, amplification of RAPD and Inter simple sequence repeat assay were performed in this study. This study results confirmed from the clinical samples were streaked onto sterile Petri dishes containing nutrient agar media using sterile dry swabs. The PCR analysis in ISSR was confirmed that 30–70% of E. coli in Asia and Africa carried ESBLs in the GLASS 2020 study, which is on par with the 59% in VINARES 2016–2017. Comparing VINARES 2016–2017 to other nations, the prevalence of ESBL carriage among K. pneumoniae was 35%. However, RAPD results showed that all employed strains and primers could successfully fingerprint DNA. Between isolated bacterial strains, similarity dendrograms were produced. The technique generated bands with the same intensity as the typical PCR carried out using pure DNA, and it worked for all 29 bacterial strains examined. In conclusion, the results show that all of the isolates have at least one antibiotic-resistance gene, and that the PCR approach is a quick, easy, and reliable way to identify genes.

The free-piston linear generator (FPLG) with a dual-piston air-driven system is a novel type of energy conversion device that converts mechanical energy into electric power through a linear generator. This paper investigates a novel FPLG utilising different generator stator core configurations (GA, GB, GC, GD, and GD) with an optimised valve opening control and the inlet pressure of 5 bar and 8 bar. The effect of generator configuration on the translator motion characteristics, root mean square (RMS) power output, as well as the system stability and the conversion efficiency, are duly discussed. The results show that the piston motion is affected by the generator configuration and the inlet pressure. The maximum RMS power achieved is 203.9 W when GB is used, whereas the maximum operating frequency of 13.8 Hz and a peak power output of 396 W are achieved when GD is used. The FPLG stability within the range for all generator configurations except for GA when the inlet pressure is 5 bar. The FPLG system conversion efficiency (thermal to work and work to electrical) is duly discussed.

Methods: We performed a non-randomized comparative trial that recruited infertile men with varicocele who were scheduled to undergo MSV. Eligible patients were allocated by the investigators in a 1:1 ratio to receive intraoperative Doppler (group I) or intraoperative Doppler plus hydrodissection (group II). Results: Sixty men were included in each group. The two study groups showed a comparable number of ligated veins on the right (4.22 ±1.57 versus 4.42 ± 1.65; p = 0.49) and left side (6.77 ± 2.14 versus 6.98 ± 2.29; p = 0.59). On the contrary, group II showed a significantly higher number of preserved arteries on the right (2.42 ± 0.56 versus 1.47 ±0.5 in group I) and left side (2.6 ± 0.53 versus 1.63 ± 0.55 in group I), with p-value < 0.001. The sperm motility was significantly higher in group II than in group I (21.25 ± 13.73 versus 13.85 ± 12.25, respectively; p = 0.002). In both groups, the sperm motility increased significantly at the end of follow-up compared to the preoperative period. The postoperative sperm mortality remained significantly higher in group II than in group I (p = 0.008). Conclusions: Intraoperative Doppler plus hydrodissection (D+IH-MSV) has advantages in preserving more arteries and enhancing the motility of sperms. Based on these findings, we strongly recommend D+IH-MSV when treating infertile men with varicocele.

We described here the assemblage patterns accompanying the soft-bottom amphipods on both spatial and vertical scales. During winter 2020, 6820 individuals were collected from Hurghada and Shalateen, the Red Sea coast from five different depths ranging from 0.5 to 35 m. Twenty two amphipod species were recorded of which 18 (82 %) and 9 (41%) species were from Hurghada and Shalateen, respectively. Perioculodes aequimanus was the most abundant sand amphipod amounting to 17% and 39% in Hurghada and Shalateen, respectively, followed by Ceradocus rubromaculatus (27%) in Shalateen, and Metaphoxus sp. and Bemlos sp. (15%) in Hurghada. Depth influenced the total amphipod abundance in Hurghada, while, in Shalateen it showed an opposite assemblage pattern. The multivariate approach based on Non-Metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) was helpful to detect differences between the study sites against depths. Sandy bottom composition, temperature, and depth variations were the main factors that influenced the amphipod assemblages according to the PCA and ANOSIM outputs. The SIMPER analysis showed that the amphipod Lysianassa ceratina and Lembos sp. were the most contributing species to the dissimilarity between the two study sites, while Guernea petalocera was the most contributing species to the similarity between Hurghada and Shalateen.

Leptin (LEP) gene polymorphisms is associated with higher risk of multiple disorders. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) exerts comedogenic effect by stimulating the sebaceous glands. Isotretinoin is an effective oral therapy for AV with many side effects including hyperlipidemia and increased serum levels of liver enzymes.Purpose: To evaluate the impact of LEP gene rs7799039 polymorphism in acne patients’ clinical response lipid profile and liver enzymes following 6 months oral isotretinoin therapy in Egyptian AV patients.Methods: One hundred eligible AV patients received 0.5 mg/kg oral isotretinoin for 6 months. Patients’ demographics and clinical data were obtained. Body mass index (BMI), lipid profile, liver enzymes and IGF-1 were measured at baseline and after 6 months of therapy. Genotyping was done for LEP gene rs 7799039.Results: Six month administration of oral isotretinoin in Egyptian AV patients is associated with significantly elevated aspartate transaminase (AST) in CC and AC genotypes (P< 0.001). Significant alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevation was observed in CC, AC and AA genotypes (P < 0.001, 0.004, 0.002, respectively). Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) were elevated significantly P< 0.001) in the three genotypes. IGF-1 was decreased significantly in CC and AC genotypes (P< 0.001). CC genotype is associated with highest response (P< 0.001).Conclusion: LEP rs7799039 gene had an impact on the clinical response, lipid profile and liver enzymes in AV patients treated with oral isotretinoin. Background: Previously, we highlighted the benefits of magnified subinguinal varicocelectomy over conservative treatment on the semen of a small group of adolescents with varicoceles. In this report, we presented changes of semen parameters of 47 adolescents who underwent magnified subinguinal varicocelectomy (MSV) and followed-up for 6 months. Methods: The present prospective controlled study was conducted on 47 adolescents with varicocele who underwent MSV and were followed up for 6 months. In addition, age and sex-matched patients were added as control group. The primary outcome of this study was to assess the postoperative change in semen analysis parameters. Results: A significant increase in sperm volume from 2.5 (1.9–3) to 3.2 (2.6–4) mL at the end of the sixth month of follow-up. Likewise, the sperm count increased from 10.8 (3.51–21.6) to 20.3 (9.6–35) million. Notably, the percentage of rapid and slow sperms increased significantly from a median of 5% (0%–10%) and 15% (10 -20%) to a median of 10% (5%–15%) and 17.5% (15%–25%), respectively. The percentage of sperm with progressive movement increased from 35% (30%–40%) to 59% (45%–69%). The vitality of the sperms increased significantly as well. While the percentage of sperms with abnormal morphology decreased significantly at the end of follow-up. Conclusion Our findings support the safety and efficacy of MSV in patients with clinically detectable varicocele. MSV has improved the semen parameters of the included patients, including sperm motility, volume, count, and total progressive motility, which may positively impact their fertility potential.

Introduction: In this paper, MgO@AgO/Ag2O nanoparticles were greenly synthesized, the current idea is to replace the harmful chemical technique with an ecofriendly synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing biogenic sources.Methods: The current investigation was conducted to create silver oxide NPs decorated by MgO NPs (namely, MgO@AgO/Ag2O nanocom-posite) using the leaves extract of Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea) as the reducing and capping agent. The nanopowder was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron mi-croscope, BET surface area, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-vis spectrophotom-eter studies. XRD studies reveal the monophasic nature of these highly crystalline silver nano-particles. SEM studies the shape and morphology of the synthesis AgO/Ag2O and MgO@AgO/Ag2O NPs. The presence of magnesium and oxygen was further confirmed by EDS profile.Results and discussion: The surface area was found to be 9.1787 m2/g and 7.7166 m2/g, respectively. FTIR analysis showed the presence of specific functional groups. UV-vis spectrophotometer studies show the absorption band at 450 nm due to surface plasmon resonance. The results have also indicated the high performance of the greenly synthesized AgO/Ag2O NPs and MgO@AgO/Ag2O NPs for photocatalytic activity dye degradation (methylene blue and toluidine blue).

Abstract Background Previously, we presented the short-term outcomes of surgeon-tailored mesh in patients with SUI undergoing TOT. In this report, we aim to highlight the two-year outcomes of surgeon tailored mesh in terms of subjective and objective cure rates, as well as late complications. Methods We performed a randomized, open-label comparative trial that recruited women with SUI who were scheduled to undergo TOT. Eligible patients were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive traditional TOT mesh or surgeon-tailored polyethylene mesh. All patients were followed up for two years. Results At the end of the follow-up, there were 13 women in the traditional TOT mesh group and 14 patients in the surgeon-tailored polyethylene mesh group. Concerning the primary outcome of the present study, the cure rate was 100% in the surgeon-tailored polyethylene mesh (n = 14) and 92.9% in the traditional TOT mesh group (p = 0.39). One woman reported improved symptoms in the traditional TOT mesh group. There were no reported failures in both groups. Concerning safety, the incidence of de novo urgency was 0% in the surgeon-tailored polyethylene mesh group, compared to 7.1% in the traditional TOT mesh group (p = 0.34). None of the women in both groups reported mesh erosions, dyspareunia, or need for reoperation. Conclusion Surgeon-tailored mesh for patients undergoing TOT is a cost-effective technique, which has comparable long-term outcomes, in terms of cure rate and complications, to the traditional costly meshes. Larger multicentre studies should confirm our results.

In this paper, an experimental test rig has been developed by utilising the free-piston linear generator (FPLG) principle of a dual-piston air-driven system. The mechanical energy of the FPLG is converted into electric power through a linear generator. The piston motion, root mean square (RMS) power output, operating frequency, system stability and the conversion efficiency of the FPLG at various inlet pressure and valve opening duration (VOD) are duly discussed in the paper. It is noticed that the piston displacement (stroke) is associated with the VOD and inlet pressure, which have the greatest effect on the FPLG motion characteristics. A long VOD leads to a high piston speed, causing high peak power output. However, the RMS power shows an approximately linear decline with the increase in VOD due to the free-piston dwelling for a certain time at the dead centre position before the exhaust process starts. The FPLG can be achieved a maximum RMS power of 120 W when the inlet pressure is 8 bar and VOD is 30 ms. When the inlet pressure changed from 8 bar to 5 bar, the FPLG operating frequency shows a similar trend and values because it is associated with the piston velocity and stroke. The FPLG Cycle-to-Cycle variation (COV) is low when the inlet pressure is high, and the system stability increases with decreases in VOD. As the VOD increases, the indicated efficiency and work to electrical efficiency increase, whereas the thermal to work efficiency decreases. The maximum indicated efficiency, work to electrical efficiency and thermal to work efficiency achieved are 59.9%, 14.7% and 14.6 %, respectively.

A free-piston linear generator (FPLG) is an energy conversion device that can generate electrical energy utilizing different types of fuel. Natural gas fields with high carbon dioxide (CO2) content are being simulated for study, knowing that the presence of CO2 in natural gas contributes to a reduction in NOx emission while improving the compression ratio. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the performance and combustion characteristics of a spark ignition (SI) FPLG fuelled with two different fuels, namely compressed natural gas (CNG) and a mixture of CNG and CO2 (CNG-CO2). A test was conducted on the FPLG to study the engine performance and combustion at various lambda ratios. It is clarified that lambda variation significantly affects the piston motion and combustion of CNG and CNG-CO2, resulting in a variation in FPLG engine stability. When a lambda tends toward a rich mixture, the translator attains a peak velocity of 5.0 and 6.25 m/s, for the CNG-CO2 and CNG, respectively, resulting in output power (rms) of 257.2 and 295.7 W at λ = 0.86 and 0.85. Also, the presence of CO2 in CNG increases the compression ratio. The engine could attain ITE of 22.8% and 15.1% for CNG-CO2 and CNG, respectively.

Crank-rocker (CR) engine is a new kind of combustion engine that has a curved-cylinder combustion chamber. To enhance CR engine development and performance, high accuracy modeling which accurately predicts combustion characteristics is required. Due to the difference in cylinder configurations, the first empirical-model used to predict the combustion characteristics of a conventional engine may not be applicable. Currently, only a single correlation model has been proposed for CR engine. The main aims of this study are to improve the existing developed CR engine model and to investigate the impact of various heat transfer correlations in predicting combustion characteristics using single-zone combustion modeling. The model has been improved by including a sub-model of the specific heat ratio which varies with temperatures. Four cases of models incorporating various heat transfer correlations namely Woschni, Sitkei, Hohenberg, and Annand have been simulated. Then, the results were analyzed and compared with experimental data. Further simulations have been carried out to predict maximum pressures, temperatures, heat transfer coefficients, etc. under various loads. Annand’s model was found to yield the best prediction for the combustion characteristics and it is considered the best choice concerning the accuracy and other criteria such as time and ease of usage.

This paper presents the volumetric and Marshall Stability characteristics of irradiated waste polyethylene terephthalate fiber-reinforced asphalt mix utilizing the analysis of variance. Exposing polymers to gamma radiation boosts its mechanical and thermal properties which have a direct impact on improving its strength. The influences of irradiated fiber and binder contents on the volumetric and strength properties have been identified via response surface methods (RSM). The RSM was used to determine the optimized contents of irradiated fiber and binder through central composite design (CCD). The results indicate that the interactions between the two independent variables are both influential. The high values of the coefficient of determination (R2) show a good agreement between the actual and predicted values. The numerical optimization elucidates that the optimal irradiated fiber and binder contents were 0.53% and 5.25% respectively. The absolute percent errors between the actual and predicted values were observed to be less than 7% for all the responses.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection associated with multisystemic involvement including renal manifestations has been described in the literature. The recent data show a high mortality rate of 60%–90% once renal function begins to deteriorate. We report on three patients who were admitted to intensive care unit due to severe COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome and developed distal renal tubular acidosis. The three COVID-19 patients had hyperchloremic acidosis which was investigated thoroughly through a biochemical analysis of arterial blood gases and urine test as well as serological tests for autoimmune diseases and chronic infections, in addition to renal ultrasound. Metabolic acidosis was managed through repeated doses of intravenous sodium bicarbonate therapy; however, continuous renal replacement therapy was initiated for two refractory cases. We found that severe COVID-19 infection may be accompanied by hyperchloremic acidosis due to the cytopathic damage of the distal renal tubules, making the buffering system nonefficient and if not managed adequately, it may lead to poor prognosis.

This work aimed to study the effects of recreational diving and snorkeling on the distribution, diversity, and abundance of surgeonfishes in six northern islands, different in their diving and snorkeling load, at the Hurghada area in the Egyptian Red Sea waters. SCUBA diving survey was conducted in summer 2019 using transect technique in the reef flat and reef slope in the study sites to compare total and single surgeonfish species census among sites and microhabitats. A total of six species of surgeonfish belonging to three genera were recorded during the current survey, including Zebrasoma xanthurum, Zebrasoma desjardinii, Acanthurus gahhm, Acanthurus sohal, Naso lituratus, and Naso unicornis. Z. desjardinii was the most abundant species, recording 41.2% relative abundance, followed by Acanthurus sohal (19%). In all sites, surgeonfish species diversity and average/total abundance in reef flat was always higher than that recorded in the reef slope. Meanwhile, the recreational effect results showed that, in reef flat habitats, surgeonfishes total/average abundance was inversely related to the numbers of divers and snorkelers across survey sites. In contrast, deeper habitat at the opened reef edge exhibited inverse distribution pattern, whereas, the obtained results showed that surgeonfish preferred the reef edge when the diving activities load increased.

The green biosynthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (GBS ZnO NPs) using Ziziphus jujuba leaves extract assisted by ultrasonic irradiation was reported in this research work. The green biosynthesized ZnO NPs were characterized using different techniques and the results revealed the synthesis of hexagonal wurtzite crystal of GBS ZnO nanoparticles; per the XRD measurement, with average practice size of 90 ± 10 nm; based on both SEM and TEM images, and with specific surface area of 14.23 m2/g; per the nitrogen gas adsorption/desorption isotherms. The antibacterial activity of the prepared GBS ZnO NPs was explored against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria using different evaluation methods; disc diffusion, column (filter), and aqueous solution, and the results showed the effective antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria, as the inhibition zones were 15 mm and 11 mm for the E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. Moreover, the anticancer activity of the green biosynthesized ZnO NPs was evaluated on two different cancer cells; human colon cancer cell lines (HCT-116) and the human liver cancer (HepG2) cells, and the experiments showed that GBS ZnO NPs had an outstanding cytotoxic effect on both cancer cell lines, as well as dose-dependent behavior, as the viability of the cancer cells decreased by using GBS ZnO NPs at concentrations of 10 and 20 µg/mL. Cell lines (HCT-116) and the human liver cancer (HepG2) cells, and the experiments showed that GBS ZnO NPs had an outstanding cytotoxic effect on both cancer cell lines, as the GBS ZnO NPs enhanced the cytotoxicity mechanism by generating ROS as the nanoparticles interact with cells, lower its cellular defense mechanism, and accordingly cause apoptosis to the cell.

Soil is a real treasure that humans cannot live without. Therefore, it is very important to sustain and conserve soils to guarantee food, fiber, fuel, and other human necessities. Healthy or high-quality soils that include adequate fertility, diverse ecosystems, and good physical properties are important to allow soil to produce healthy food in support of human health. When a soil suffers from degradation, the soil’s productivity decreases. Soil restoration refers to the reversal of degradational processes. This study is a pictorial review on the nano-restoration of soil to return its fertility. Restoring soil fertility for zero hunger and restoration of degraded soils are also discussed. Sustainable production of nanoparticles using plants and microbes is part of the process of soil nano-restoration. The nexus of nanoparticle–plant–microbe (NPM) is a crucial issue for soil fertility. This nexus itself has several internal interactions or relationships, which control the bioavailability of nutrients, agrochemicals, or pollutants for cultivated plants. The NPM nexus is also controlled by many factors that are related to soil fertility and its restoration. This is the first photographic review on nano-restoration to return and sustain soil fertility. However, several additional open questions need to be answered and will be discussed in this work.

Objective: Cost and expense stickiness is an important issue in accounting and economics research, and the literature has shown that cost stickiness cannot be separated from managers’ motivations. This study examines the relationship between managerial short-termism and Cost Stickiness. Method: To measure managerial short-termism were used three criteria discretionary accruals and the actual items (through manipulation of sales and a reduction in discretionary spending) and also other control variables affecting cost stickiness such as the number of the staff, the amount of assets, and sales decline continuous, natural logarithm 1 in addition to the yield of initial annual share, free cash flow, constant payment to managers. Sampling population of the present study includes 95 accepted companies at Tehran stock exchange and manufacturing parts in the time period of 2005-2014. Results: Based on the findings the effects of earnings management based on actual items through reduction in discretionary spending on cost Stickiness is confirmed and can say managerial short-termism has a negative and meaningful relationship with cost stickiness.

The hybrid type of pavement called semi-flexible or grouted macadam has gained popularity over the last few decades in various countries, as it provides significant advantages over both rigid and conventional flexible pavements. The semi-flexible pavement surface consists of an open-graded asphalt mixture with high percentage voids into which flowable cementitious slurry is allowed to penetrate due to gravitational effect. Several researchers have conducted laboratory, as well as field, experiments on evaluating the performance of semi-flexible layers using different compositions of cementitious grouts. The composition of grouts (i.e., water/cement ratio, superplasticizer, polymers, admixtures, and other supplementary materials) has a significant effect on the performance of grouts and semi-flexible mixtures. A comprehensive review of cementitious grouts and their effect on the performance of semi-flexible layers are presented and summarized in this review study. The effect of byproducts and other admixtures/additives on the mechanical properties of grouts are also discussed. Finally, recommendations on the composition of cementitious grouts have been suggested.

The present study evaluates the effect of nickel oxide nanoparticles on some biochemical parameters and midgut tissues in the ground beetle Blaps polychresta as an indicator organism for nanotoxicity. Serial doses of the NiO-NPs colloid (0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.06 mg/g) were prepared for injecting into the adult beetles. Insect survival was reported daily for 30 days, and the sublethal dose of 0.02 mg/g NiO-NPs was selected for the tested parameters. After the treatment, nickel was detected in the midgut tissues by X-ray microanalysis. The treated group demonstrated a significant increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities when compared to the untreated group. However, the treated group demonstrated a significant decrease in ascorbate peroxidase (APOX) activity when compared to the untreated group. Histological and ultrastructural changes in the midgut tissues of treated and untreated beetles were also observed. The current findings provide a precedent for describing the physiological and histological changes caused by NiO-NPs in the ground beetle B. polychresta.

Surprisingly, there is no clear data about the impact of multiple E-GWs on quality of life in immune-competent adult patients in comparison to GWs, which have been frequently reported to exhibit a strong negative impact on life quality. Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study investigated the impact of multiple E-GWs on quality of life in immune-competent adults as they are more commonly encountered in daily practice than their genital counterpart in the Egyptian population. Hundred patients with multiple E-GWs (aged 18–67 years, 46 females, 54 males) and 100 patients with multiple GWs (aged 18–55 years, 56 females, 44 males) were included. Cause for immune suppression in the patients was not known. A hard copy of the validated Arabic (Egypt) version of Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaire was used with permission. Results: The DLQI total scores range was 5–14 with a mean of 11.2 ± 2.5 in GWs and 1–24 with a mean of 13.0 ± 5.8 in E-GWs, which are statistically significant (P=0.009). To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the impact of E-GWs on life quality of immune-competent adults. Conclusion: E-GWs can have a very strong negative impact on patients’ daily life. We highly encourage all treating physicians to use the “bio-psycho-social” model when facing patients with E-GWs in an attempt to secure the best life quality for our patients.Keywords: HPV, DLQI, warts

Rumex vesicarius L. (Polygonaceae), an edible plant has many important medicinal uses in the southeast of Algeria. The medicinal importance of this plant is a reflection of its chemical composition since the plant contains many bioactive substances. This research investigated the polyphenols profiling (total phenolic content, flavonoids, and condensed tannins), antioxidant and antibacterial properties of ethanolic extracts of seed, flower, leaf and stem from Rumex Vesicarius L. The total phenolic, flavonoid, condensed tannins contents, and antioxidant activity of all the parts extract was quantified. All extracts showed the presence of phenolic compounds and exhibited different levels of free radical scavenging activity against ABTS and superoxide radicals. In addition, for antibacterial activity, the following bacteria were tested: Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 13311), Escherichia coli (ATCC 35210), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 10907), Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 12228), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Results showed that all extracts possessed concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. The study concludes that Rumex vesicarius L possess diverse therapeutic potentials that might be used as natural antioxidant and antibacterial.

The utilization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (WPET) as aggregate substitutes in pavement has been extensively promoted because of its environmental advantages. However, previous studies have shown that a high percentage of WPET reduces the performance of the pavement. To increase the durability of pavement and mitigate the environmental issues caused by WPET, WPET is treated with gamma-irradiation as a component in asphalt mixtures. The study objectives were to investigate the feasibility of using WPET granules as a sustainable aggregate on asphalt mixture stiffness and rutting and predict the asphalt mixture performance containing irradiated WPET via an RSM-ANN-framework. To achieve the objectives, stiffness and rutting tests were conducted to evaluate the WPET modified mixtures’ performance. The result indicated that samples containing 40% irradiated WPET provided a better performance compared to mixtures containing 20% non-irradiated WPET, increasing the stiffness by 27% and 21% at 25 °C and 40 °C, respectively, and rutting resistance by 11% at 45 °C. Furthermore, both predictive models developed demonstrated excellent reliability. The ANN exhibited superior performance than the RSM. The utilization of WPET as aggregate in asphalt mixtures represents a way to addressing related recycling issues while also improving performance. With gamma-irradiation treatment, the utilization of WPET can be increased with improved asphalt mixture performance.

The ostrich oil of Struthio camelus (Ratite) found uses in folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory in eczema and contact dermatitis. The anti-inflammatory effect of a γ-lactone (5-hexyl-3H-furan-2-one) isolated from ostrich oil and its formulated nano-emulsion in formalin-induced paw edema was investigated in this study. Ostrich oil was saponified using a standard procedure; the aqueous residue was fractionated, purified, and characterized as γ-lactone (5-hexyl-3H-furan-2-one) through the interpretation of IR, NMR, and MS analyses. The γ-lactone was formulated as nano-emulsion using methylcellulose (MC) for oral solubilized form. The γ-lactone methylcellulose nanoparticles (γ-lactone-MC-NPs) were characterized for their size, shape, and encapsulation efficiency with a uniform size of 300 nm and 59.9% drug content. The γ-lactone was applied topically, while the formulated nanoparticles (NPs) were administered orally to rats. A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac gel) was used as a reference drug for topical use and ibuprofen suspension for oral administration. Edema was measured using the plethysmograph method. Both γ-lactone and γ-lactone-MC-NPs showed reduction of formalin-induced paw edema in rats and proved to be better than the reference drugs; diclofenac gel and ibuprofen emulsion. Histological examination of the skin tissue revealed increased skin thickness with subepidermal edema and mixed inflammatory cellular infiltration, which were significantly reduced by the γ-lactone compared to the positive control (p-value = 0.00013). Diuretic and toxicity studies of oral γ-lactone-MC-NPs were performed. No diuretic activity was observed. However, lethargy, drowsiness, and refusal to feeding observed may limit its oral administration.

It is known that changes in temperature may produce stresses in concrete structures of mainly the same order of magnitude as the dead and live loads in some cases. However, the stresses due to temperature are produced only when the thermal expansion or contraction is restrained. In this paper, the behavior of reinforced concrete beams and frames is studied under thermal loads, with the presence of dead and live loads, in order to examine the effect of temperature variation. The beams and frames are modeled properly by accounting for material nonlinearity, particularly cracking. Different temperature gradients, uniform, linear and nonlinear, are considered. The finite element method is employed for conducting the analysis utilizing the computer code ABAQUS. The obtained results of the studied cases reveal that material modeling of reinforced concrete beams and frames plays a major role in how these structures react to temperature variation. Cracking contributes to the release of significant portion of temperature restrain and in some cases this restrain is almost eliminated. The response of beams and frames deviates significantly based on the temperature gradient, linear or nonlinear; hence, the nonlinear temperature gradient which is the realistic profile is important to implement in the analysis.

The incorporation of nondestructive and cost-effective tools in genetic drought studies in combination with reliable indirect screening criteria that exhibit high heritability and genetic correlations will be critical for addressing the water deficit challenges of the agricultural sector under arid conditions and ensuring the success of genotype development. In this study, the proximal spectral reflectance data were exploited to assess three destructive agronomic parameters [dry weight (DW) and water content (WC) of the aboveground biomass and grain yield (GY)] in 30 recombinant F7 and F8 inbred lines (RILs) growing under full (FL) and limited (LM) irrigation regimes. The utility of different groups of spectral reflectance indices (SRIs) as an indirect assessment tool was tested based on heritability and genetic correlations. The performance of the SRIs and different models of partial least squares regression (PLSR) and stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) in estimating the destructive parameters was considered. Generally, all groups of SRIs, as well as different models of PLSR and SMLR, generated better estimations for destructive parameters under LM and combined FL+LM than under FL. Even though most of the SRIs exhibited a low association with destructive parameters under FL, they exhibited moderate to high genetic correlations and also had high heritability. The SRIs based on near-infrared (NIR)/visible (VIS) and NIR/NIR, especially those developed in this study, spectral band intervals extracted within VIS, red edge, and NIR spectral range, or individual effective wavelengths relevant to green, red, red edge, and middle NIR spectral region, were found to be more effective in estimating the destructive parameters under all conditions. Five models of SMLR and PLSR for each condition explained most of the variation in the three destructive parameters among genotypes. These models explained 42% to 46%, 19% to 30%, and 39% to 46% of the variation in DW, WC, and GY among genotypes under FL, 69% to 72%, 59% to 61%, and 77% to 81% under LM, and 71% to 75%, 61% to 71%, and 74% to 78% under FL+LM, respectively. Overall, these results confirmed that application of hyperspectral reflectance sensing in breeding programs is not only important for evaluating a sufficient number of genotypes in an expeditious and cost-effective manner but also could be exploited to develop indirect breeding traits that aid in accelerating the development of genotypes for application under adverse environmental conditions.

Alternative splicing and alternative polyadenylation (APA) contribute to mRNA diversity but are difficult to assess using short read RNA-seq data. Here, the authors use single molecule long-read isoform sequencing and develop a computational pipeline to identify full-length splice isoforms and APA sites in sorghum.

Aortic valve replacement in patients with dextrocardia and situs inversus totalis is technically challenging due to anatomical considerations. Modifications of the cannulation strategy and operative tool sets are helpful. We report a 47-year-old man who had dextrocardia with situs inversus totalis with severe aortic regurgitation. Our approach was precisely planned depending on the clear anatomy outlined by preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest. We used a surgical approach in which the main surgeon was standing on the left side of the patient. Left sided approach provided excellent exposure for aortic valve replacement in this case scenario.

Selenium is an essential micronutrient required for the health of humans and lower plants, but its importance for higher plants is still being investigated. The biological functions of Se related to human health revolve around its presence in 25 known selenoproteins (e.g., selenocysteine or the 21st amino acid). Humans may receive their required Se through plant uptake of soil Se, foods enriched in Se, or Se dietary supplements. Selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) have been applied to biofortified foods and feeds. Due to low toxicity and high efficiency, Se-NPs are used in applications such as cancer therapy and nano-medicines. Selenium and nano-selenium may be able to support and enhance the productivity of cultivated plants and animals under stressful conditions because they are antimicrobial and anti-carcinogenic agents, with antioxidant capacity and immune-modulatory efficacy. Thus, nano-selenium could be inserted in the feeds of fish and livestock to improvise stress resilience and productivity. This review offers new insights in Se and Se-NPs biofortification for edible plants and farm animals under stressful environments. Further, extensive research on Se-NPs is required to identify possible adverse effects on humans and their cytotoxicity.

High unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, on account of the premixed air-fuel mixture entering the crevices and pre-mature combustion, are setbacks to reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion at a low load. The influence of direct-injected B5 and port injection of biogas at the intake valve was, experimentally, examined in the RCCI mode. The port injection at the valve was to elevate the temperature at low load and eliminate premixing for reduced pre-mature combustion and fuel entering the crevices. An advanced injection timing of 21° crank angle before top dead centre and fraction of 50% each of the fuels, were maintained at speeds of 1600, 1800 and 2000 rpm and varied the load from 4.5 to 6.5 bar indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP). The result shows slow combustion as the load increases with the highest indicated thermal efficiency of 36.33% at 5.5 bar IMEP. The carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions increased, but UHC emission decreased, significantly, as the load increases. However, CO emission rose from 4.5 to 5.5 bar IMEP, then reduced as the load increases. The use of these fuels and biogas injection at the valve were capable of averagely reducing the persistent challenge of the CO and UHC emissions, by 20.33% and 10% respectively, compared to the conventional premixed mode.

Copper is an essential element in plants. When scarce, copper is acquired from extracellular environment or remobilized from intracellular sites, through members of the high affinity copper transporters family COPT located at the plasma membrane and internal membrane, respectively. Here, we show that COPT3 is an intracellular copper transporter, located at a compartment of the secretory pathway, that is mainly expressed in pollen grains and vascular bundles. Contrary to the COPT1 plasma membrane member, the expression of the internal COPT3 membrane transporter was higher at 12 h than at 0 h of a neutral photoperiod day under copper deficiency. The screening of a library of conditionally overexpressed transcription factors implicated members of the TCP family in the COPT3 differential temporal expression pattern. Particularly, in vitro, TCP16 was found to bind to the COPT3 promoter and down-regulated its expression. Accordingly, TCP16 was mainly expressed at 0 h under copper deficiency and induced at 12 h by copper excess. Moreover, TCP16 overexpression resulted in increased sensitivity to copper deficiency, whereas the tcp16 mutant was sensitive to copper excess. Both copper content and the expression of particular copper status markers were altered in plants with modified levels of TCP16. Consistent with TCP16 affecting pollen development, the lack of COPT3 function led to altered pollen morphology. Furthermore, analysis of copt3 and COPT3 overexpressing plants revealed that COPT3 function exerted a negative effect on TCP16 expression. Taken together, these results suggest a differential daily regulation of copper uptake depending on the external and internal copper pools, in which TCP16 inhibits copper remobilization at dawn through repression of intracellular transporters.

Background: Gastric cancer is common malignancy and exhibits a poor prognosis. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of patients present with metastatic disease which precludes curative treatment. Non-invasive biomarkers which discriminate early from advanced stages or predict the response to treatment are urgently required. This study explored the cytokeratin-18 fragment M30 and full-length cytokeratin-18 M65 in predicting treatment response and survival in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of advanced gastric cancer. Methods: Patients enrolled in the SUN-CASE study received sunitinib or placebo as an adjunct to standard therapy with leucovorin (Ca-folinate), 5-fluorouracil, and irinotecan in second or third line. Treatment response rates, progression-free survival and overall survival were assessed during a follow-up period of 12 months. Cytokeratin-18 fragments were analyzed in 52 patients at baseline and day 14 of therapy. Results: Levels of M30 correlated with the presence of metastasis and lymph node involvement and decreased significantly during chemotherapy. Importantly, baseline levels of M30 were significantly higher in patients who failed therapy. In addition, patients who did not respond to treatment were also identifiable at day 14 based on elevated M30 levels. By stepwise regression analysis, M30 at day 14 was identified as independent predictor of treatment response. Likewise, serum levels of full-length cytokeratin-18 M65 at baseline also correlated with treatment failure and progression-free survival. The addition of sunitinib did not exert any effects on serum levels of M30 or M65. Conclusion: The cytokeratin-18 fragment M30 at day 14 identifies patients that fail to second- or third-line therapy for advanced gastric cancer. Validation of this non-invasive biomarker in gastric cancer is warranted.

Ischemic stroke following cardiac surgery is one of the devastating complications that surgeons may encounter, and may lead to serious disabilities for the patient. The clinical course of such a complication may be prolonged if it is not treated properly. Making a quick decision when choosing a revascularization method is very helpful in this matter. Effective treatment options are usually limited. Neurointerventional maneuvers have recently emerged as a possible therapeutic modality in this field. We present the case of a 52-year-old woman who had open heart surgery in Queen Alia Heart Institute, Jordan, to replace a severely stenotic rheumatic mitral valve and repair a leaking tricuspid valve. Her surgery went smoothly with no major event. However, she developed a massive ischemic stroke during her recovery period despite being on adequate anticoagulation therapy. Urgent radiological work-up confirmed the diagnosis of ischemic stroke in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery. We chose a neuro-interventional method for her treatment, and mechanical thrombectomy was performed with a successful outcome and no apparent complications.

This study was conducted during 2010 and 2011 in North and South Kordofan States with objectives of to identify and assess the most important agroforestry systems, to characterize major tree species in different agroforestry system, to prioritize major constraints on agroforestry systems in the region, and to study the current status of gum Arabic trees and their contribution on farmers livelihood. Data were collected through community meeting, individual interviews and direct field observation. The common agroforestry systems in the region are scatter trees on farm land, followed by wind breaks and boundary planting. The important trees in the study area are Acacia senegal83%, followed by Fadherbia albida 46%, Ziziphus spina- christia43% and Balanites aegyptiaca 41%. The most important field crops that cultivated in agroforestry system are groundnuts, millet, sorghum, sesame and roselle. The environmental benefits of trees in farm which was identified by the respondents include protection of farm against wind erosion, improvement of the soil properties, improvement of the micro-climate and providing a source for income which was indicated by the majority of respondents. Across all sites 93% of respondents showed that gum Arabic have a significant contribution to their family income. The study recommended that a multi-purpose tree species such as Acacia senegal should be maintained for amelioration of soils fertility and increase crop productivity in the fragile ecosystems such as that of the study sites. The reproductive cycle of the eared horse mussel, Modiolus auriculatus, was followed for one year from February, 2011 to January, 2012 based on 240 individuals collected from Hurghada, north coast of Red Sea, Egypt. The gonadal maturation of M. auriculatus was examined by means of macroscopic and histological preparations of the mantle. Annual cycle with periods of growth, maturity and discharge of gonadic products occurs simultaneously in both sexes. Ripe individuals were observed throughout the year. The largest number of spawning for the individuals occurred from March to June and July for the population. So, it was clear to identify one heavy spawning period for this species. Sexation of M. auriculatus did not differ significantly from 1:1. Sexes were distinguishable in all individuals at the ripe stage with a shell length greater than 3.00 cm. A direct positive correlation was observed between gonad index and water temperature.
