Endothermic chemical reactions taking place at temperatures above 1000 K are candidates for the utilization of solar energy in highly concentrating solar furnaces. Special interest is focussed onto the question of whether light drives the reaction differently from heat. To observe such an effect it is important to monitor the chemical process of the sample under irradiation. In this paper we propose spectral reflectivity as a probe for chemical changes. We present laboratory measurements showing reflectivity changes associated with the oxidation of magnetite. We observed significant changes at temperatures coinciding with the oxidation temperature of magnetite. We further observed a change of the reflectivity associated with the phase transition of maghemite to hematite. Imaging systems are inherently prone to aberrations. We present an optimization method to design two-dimensional (2D) freeform reflectors that minimize aberrations for various parallel ray beams incident on the optical system. We iteratively design reflectors using inverse methods from non-imaging optics and optimize them to obtain a system that produces minimal aberrations. This is done by minimizing a merit function that quantifies aberrations and is dependent on the energy distributions at the source and target of an optical system, which are input parameters essential for inverse freeform design. The proposed method is tested for two configurations: a single-reflector system and a double-reflector system. Classical designs consisting of aspheric elements are well-known for their ability to minimize aberrations. We compare the performance of our freeform optical elements with classical designs. We analyse ambient-noise seismic data from 23 three-component seismic nodes to study firn velocity structure and seismic anisotropy near the EastGRIP camp along the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS). Using nine-component correlation tensors, we derive dispersion curves of Rayleigh and Love wave group velocities from 3 to 40 Hz. These velocity distributions exhibit anisotropy along and across the flow. To assess these variations, we invert dispersion curves for shear wave velocities (Vsh and Vsv) in the top 150 m of the NEGIS using a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach. The reconstructed 1-D shear velocity model reveals radial anisotropy in the firn, with Vsh 12 %–15 % greater than Vsv , peaking at the critical density (550 kg m−3). We combine density data from firn cores drilled in 2016 and 2018 to create a new density parameterisation for the NEGIS, serving as a reference for our results. We link seismic anisotropy in the NEGIS to effective and intrinsic causes. Seasonal densification, wind crusts, and melt layers induce effective anisotropy, leading to faster Vsh waves. Changes in firn recrystallisation cause intrinsic anisotropy, altering the Vsv / Vsh ratio. We observe a shallower firn–ice transition across the flow (≈ 50 m) compared with along the flow (≈ 60 m), suggesting increased firn compaction due to the predominant wind direction and increased deformation towards the shear margin. We demonstrate that short-duration (9 d minimum), passive, seismic deployments and noise-based analysis can determine seismic anisotropy in firn, and we reveal 2-D firn structure and variability. In boundary lubrication, adsorbed molecular films formed by lubricant additives on the metal surfaces of sliding parts effectively reduce friction and wear. A method is presented for simultaneously measuring friction and the gap at a metal-lubricant interface under boundary lubrication conditions using atomic force microscopy. In this method, line-and-space patterns are microfabricated in Cu films on Si substrates, and the gap is evaluated from the step height change when scanning in base oil and in base oil with an additive. Neutron reflectometry showed that whereas both stearic acid and stearyl alcohol formed molecular film about 2 nm thick on Cu film in a static state, the gap increased only with stearic acid due to maintaining a molecular film on the Cu film. This demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method as means for visualizing the gap and shows that there is a difference between the two additives in their film-forming ability in a static state and their durability against friction. The proposed method for simultaneously measuring friction and the gap at a metal-lubricant interface is thus an effective way to investigate the tribological performance of additives under boundary lubrication conditions. Background: Healthy siblings of children with life-limiting conditions often experience emotional and behavioural struggles over the course of the ill child's condition(s). Resources to support these siblings are limited due to a lack of understanding about their needs. Therefore, this study was designed to characterize the emotional and behavioural trajectories among siblings of children with progressive, life-limiting genetic, metabolic, or neurological conditions over a 12-month observation period. Methods: Seventy siblings were recruited from a large-survey based study (Charting the Territory) that examined the bio-psychosocial health outcomes of parents and siblings. Linear mixed effect models were used to assess the association between siblings' emotions and behaviour trajectories and selected demographic variables. Siblings' emotions and behaviour were measured with Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). Results: Siblings' mean age was 11.2 years at baseline and Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Behaviour Problems mean scores were within normal ranges across time. However, 7–25% of siblings had scores within the clinical range. Brothers had higher levels of Internalizing Problems than sisters, whereas sisters had higher levels of Externalizing Problems than brothers. When treatment was first sought for the ill child less than a year prior to study participation, siblings had higher levels of Internalizing and Externalizing Problems compared with siblings who participated more than one year after treatment was sought. Conclusion: Healthy siblings experience emotional and behavioural problems early in the child's disease trajectory. Although these problems improve with time, our findings show that brothers and sisters experience different types of challenges. Linear Fresnel concentrators (LFR) are widely seen by the scientific community as one of the most promising systems for the production of solar energy via thermal plants or concentrated photovoltaics. The produced energy depends on the optical efficiency of the LFR, which is mainly dictated by the geometry of the plant. For this reason, the analysis of LFR geometry and its effects on optical behavior is a crucial step in the design and optimization of a Fresnel plant. The theoretical and computational tools used to model the optics of a LFR are fundamental in research on energy production. In this review, geometrical aspects of the optics of linear Fresnel concentrators are presented, with a detailed discussion of the parameters required to define the geometry of a plant and of the main optical concepts. After an overview of the literature on the subject, the main part of the review is dedicated to summarising useful formulas and outlining general procedures for optical simulations. These include (i) a ray-tracing procedure to simulate a mirror field, and (ii) a fast quasi-analytical method useful for optimizations and on-the-fly computations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) glazing systems with intelligent window technologies enhance building energy efficiency by generating electricity and managing daylighting. This study explores advanced BIPV glazing, focusing on building-integrated concentrating photovoltaic (BICPV) systems. BICPV integrates concentrating optics, such as holographic films, luminescent solar concentrators (LSC), Fresnel lenses, and compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs), with photovoltaic cells. Notable results include achieving 17.9% electrical efficiency using cylindrical holographic optical elements and crystalline silicon cells at a 3.5× concentration ratio. Dielectric CPCs showed 97.7% angular acceptance efficiency in simulations and 94.4% experimentally, increasing short-circuit current and maximum power by 87.0% and 96.6%, respectively, across 0° to 85° incidence angles. Thermochromic hydrogels and thermotropic smart glazing systems demonstrated significant HVAC energy savings. Large-area 1 m2 PNIPAm-based thermotropic window outperformed conventional double glazing in Singapore. The thermotropic parallel slat transparent insulation material (TT PS-TIM) improved energy efficiency by up to 21.5% compared to double glazing in climates like London and Rome. Emerging dynamic glazing technologies combine BIPV with smart functions, balancing transparency and efficiency. Photothermally controlled methylammonium lead iodide PV windows achieved 68% visible light transmission, 11.3% power conversion efficiency, and quick switching in under 3 min. Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal smart windows provided 41–68% visible transmission with self-powered operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recycling of light allows the luminance (radiance) emitted by a light source to be increased at the cost of reducing the total luminous flux (radiant power). Recycling of light means returning part of the emitted light to the source, where part of it will escape absorption. An optical design that is suitable for multiple and controlled recycling is described. Carambola optics is named for its resemblance to star fruit. Several pairs of mirrors or prisms redirect light repeatedly onto the source, thus achieving multiple transits of the light through the source. This recycled light exits the carambola in the same phase space as light directly emitted and not recycled.

Light guides are employed to homogenize an illumination distribution, to translate cross-sectional beam shapes, and to provide concentration. Microstructures enhance the performance of light guides based on the selective mixing of direction vector components in the two-dimensional phase space (etendue) that is perpendicular to the system's optical axis. For linear concentrators we find that the microstructured light guide beats the two-dimensional concentration limit and roughly allows for a three-dimensional concentration ratio. This result is verified in simulation and experiment.

An optical measurement method for nonimaging radiation concentrators is proposed. A Lambertian light source is placed in the exit aperture of the concentrator. Looking into the concentrator's entrance aperture from a remote position, one can photograph the transmission patterns. The patterns show the transmission of radiation through the concentrator with the full resolution of the four-dimensional phase space of geometric optics. By matching ray-tracing simulations to the measurement, one can achieve detailed and accurate information about the geometry of the concentrator. This is a remote, noncontact measurement and can be performed in situ for installed concentrators. Additional information regarding small-scale reflector waviness and surface reflectivity can also be obtained from the same measurement with additional analysis.

For technical reasons, large three-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (CPC's) are often built from facets with either no or only one-dimensional curvature. We analyze CPC approximations made with various numbers of axial and circumferential subdivisions. Incident radiation within half-angles of 10 degrees and 30 degrees is considered. The reflectivity of the mirrors is assumed to be 90% or 95%. The performance of faceted concentrators can be significantly improved by optimization as compared with heuristic CPC approaches. The highest increase in transmission that we observed was 19% greater as compared with that of a heuristic CPC approximation. The shapes of the optimized concentrators differ from that of a classic CPC, and most of the optimized concentrators are longer than a classic CPC. For practical concentrators with a small number of facets, the optimized geometry provides better performance than a heuristic approximation of the CPC shape.

Designs for flexible, high-power-density, remote irradiation systems are presented. Applications include industrial infrared heating such as in semiconductor processing, alternatives to laser light for certain medical procedures, and general remote high-brightness lighting. The high power densities in herent to the small active radiating regions of conventional metal-halide, halogen, xenon, microwave-sulfur, and related lamps can be restored with nonimaging concentrators with little loss of power. These high fluxlevels can then be transported at high transmissivity with light channels such as optical fibers or lightpipes, and reshaped into luminaires that can deliver prescribed angular and spatial flux distributions onto desired targets. Details for nominally two- and three-dimensional systems are developed, along with estimates ofoptical performance.

The article presents information on the case State v. Sharp. In this case the Supreme Court of Louisiana held that a defendant convicted of violating a police jury ordinance, upon whom sentence was suspended, was not entitled to an appeal, on the ground that there had been no final judgment, and, therefore, no appeal would lie. However, in this particular case, there was a statute relative to the suspension of sentence, which expressly provided that, if sentence is suspended, neither the verdict of conviction nor the judgment entered thereon shall become final, except upon the conviction of the defendant of another felony or misdemeanor. Whether or not the holding of the court in the absence of this act would have been the same, depends upon the question whether or not the suspension of sentence is to be considered a final judgment. It will be seen then that, although the rules in the various jurisdictions differ, the matter of appeal is almost wholly within the determination of the defendant.

The maximum concentration of radiation is proportional to the square of the refractive index of the medium in which it propagates. A medium with a high refractive index can also serve as a lightguide for concentrated radiation. However, if concentrated radiation is extracted from one medium, with a high refractive index, to another, whose index is lower (e.g., from fused silica into air), part of the radiation may be lost because of the total internal reflection at the interface. We present polygonal shapes suitable for efficient extraction of the concentrated radiation in a controllable way, without increasing the cross-section area (or diameter) of the lightguide. It is shown analytically and experimentally that the use of a secondary concentrator, followed by such a light extractor, both having a high refractive index, can provide considerably more power to a solar receiver with a specific aperture.

For parabolic trough solar collectors with tubular absorbers, we design new tailored secondary concentrators. The design is applicable for any rim angle of a parabolic reflector. With the secondary, the concentration can be increased by a factor of more than 2 with a compact secondary reflector consisting of a single piece, even for the important case of a rim angle of 90 deg. The parabolic reflector can be used without changes; the reduced absorber is still tubular but smaller than the original absorber and slightly displaced toward the primary.
