In yeasts, the Leu3 transcriptional factor regulates the expression of genes encoding enzymes of the leucine biosynthetic pathway, in which the first committed step is catalyzed by α-isopropylmalate synthase (α-IPMS). This enzyme is feedback inhibited by leucine, and its product, α-isopropylmalate (α-IPM), constitutes a Leu3 co-activator. In S. cerevisiae, the ScBAT1 and ScBAT2 genes encode branched-chain aminotransferase isozymes. ScBAT1 transcriptional activation is dependent on the α-IPM concentration and independent of chromatin organization, while that of ScBAT2 is α-IPM-independent but dependent on chromatin organization. This study aimed at understanding whether chromatin remodeling determines the transcriptional regulation of orthologous KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 genes in Kluyveromyces lactis and Lachancea kluyveri under conditions in which the branched-chain amino acids are synthesized or degraded. The results indicate that, in K. lactis, KlBAT1 expression is reduced under catabolic conditions, while in L. kluyveri, LkBAT1 displays a constitutive expression profile. The chromatin organization of KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 promoters did not change, maintaining the Leu3-binding sites free of nucleosomes. Comparison of the α-IPMS sensitivities to feedback inhibition suggested that the main determinant of transcriptional activation of the KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 genes might be the availability of the α-IPM co-activator, as reported previously for the ScBAT1 gene of S. cerevisiae.

El estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar las principales percepciones y el grado de experiencia que tienen los profesores respecto a la Inteligencia Artificial (IA), considerada una herramienta válida en el ámbito de la Educación Superior. Los datos se recopilaron durante el segundo semestre del año 2023, utilizando una metodología cualitativa y de tipo analítico descriptivo, con el apoyo de la herramienta Power Bi. Los resultados indican que se requiere mayor capacitación para los profesores a fin de implementar efectivamente la IA en las diferentes universidades paraguayas.

The need to reduce overall energy consumption motivates the search for ways to improve energy use by transportation. Electrification has helped to significantly reduce the energy intensity of rail transportation. On today’s high-speed lines, power flows between trains and traction transformers are generally transmitted through the 2x25 electrification system. Although most of the energy provided to the railway system is consumed by the moving trains, a part of the energy is lost in the electrification system itself. In this study, dynamic computer simulations of realistic high-speed rail operating scenarios are developed and the energy losses in the electrification system are evaluated. The results show that power transmission losses are significant, and their value depends on the operation scenario. Finally, a method for selecting the minimum transmission loss operating scenarios is proposed, without modifying the transportation capacity offered or altering the resources required for the operation of a high-speed rail.

Abstract Astronauts travelling in space will be exposed to mixed beams of particle radiation and photons. Exposure limits that correspond to defined cancer risk are calculated by multiplying absorbed doses by a radiation-type specific quality factor that reflects the biological effectiveness of the particle without considering possible interaction with photons. We have shown previously that alpha radiation and X-rays may interact resulting in synergistic DNA damage responses in human peripheral blood lymphocytes but the level of intra-individual variability was high. In order to assess the variability and validate the synergism, blood from two male donors was drawn at 9 time points during 3 seasons of the year and exposed to 0–2 Gy of X-rays, alpha particles or 1:1 mixture of both (half the dose each). DNA damage response was quantified by chromosomal aberrations and by mRNA levels of 3 radiation-responsive genes FDXR, CDKN1A and MDM2 measured 24 h post exposure. The quality of response in terms of differential expression of alternative transcripts was assessed by using two primer pairs per gene. A consistently higher than expected effect of mixed beams was found in both donors for chromosomal aberrations and gene expression with some seasonal variability for the latter. No synergy was detected for alternative transcription.

The purpose of this study is to describe the management style, performance appraisal and employee development of selected personnel from an academic institution in Central Luzon, Philippines. The study used a descriptive-correlation research design with survey as the primary instrument for data gathering. 75 personnel took part in the survey with the use of convenience sampling technique. The researchers used an adapted and modified instrument to gather data. The instrument underwent a reliability test and generated an overall coefficient of 0.925. This study used SPSS 20 to analyze the data. The study found that the personnel agreed on the context of management style in the organization. They also shared the same response on how their performance appraisal works and how the organization plans for employee development. There is also a significant difference in performance appraisal and employee development when grouped according to years in service and employment status. In terms of relationship, there is a low-moderate positive relationship between management style, performance appraisal and employee development. Based on the results of the study, the researchers presented some general recommendations for human resource management and for the institutions.

This study aimed to assess the emotional intelligence and work values of the selected instructors from a teacher education institution. The researcher used a descriptive correlational design in this study with the questionnaire as the main instrument of gathering data. Thirty instructors took part in the survey via convenience sampling. For the instrument, an adapted and modified version of the Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment Questionnaire (1998) and Work Values Inventory (2006) was used. The researcher subjected the data with the following tools: Weighted Mean, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson-r with the help of SPSS 20. This study generated the following results: instructors agree moderately on the different indicators of emotional intelligence. The instructors also stated that all the indicators are important for the work values inventory. There are no significant differences found in the emotional intelligence and work values when grouped according to sex, civil status, educational attainment, and length of service. However, in terms of age, emotional intelligence got a significant difference. There is also no significant relationship found between the demographic profile, emotional intelligence, and work values of the instructors. Based on the results, the researcher endorsed relevant recommendations.

This study aimed to analyze the supervisory relationship, organizational climate and satisfaction of employees in a local community college. The researcher used a descriptive-correlational design with the survey as the instrument and considered 60 respondents using a convenience sampling technique. An adopted and modified instrument was used to gather data. For the statistical treatment, the study used SPSS 22 to analyze the gathered data with the use of the following tools: frequency, percentage, weighted mean, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson-r. The study generated the following results: the respondents answered, "Agree" that they have a good and suitable supervisory relationship, organizational climate and overall satisfaction. In addition, there are significant findings observed in supervisory relationships and organizational climate when grouped according to demographic profiles. Furthermore, relationship exist between some of the demographic profiles of the respondents, supervisory relationship, organizational climate and overall satisfaction. With the forgoing results, the researcher recommended important suggestions for this study.

Abstract Seeking to enhance the strength of the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IL-DMI) through a combination of atomic and Rashba type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) we studied the strength and the thickness evolution of effective interlayer coupling in Co/Ag/Co trilayers by means of surface sensitive magneto-optical measurements that take advantage of the light penetration depth. Here, we report the observation of oscillatory, thickness-dependent chiral interaction between ferromagnetic layers. Despite the weakness of the Ag atomic SOC, the IL-DMI in our trilayers is orders of magnitude larger than that of known systems using heavy metals as a spacer except of recently reported −0.15 mJ/m2 in Co/Pt/Ru(t)/Pt/Co and varies between ≈ ±0.2 mJ/m2. In contrast to known multilayers Co/Ag/Co promotes in-plane chirality between magnetic layers. The strength of IL-DMI opens up new routes for design of three-dimensional chiral spin structures combining intra- and interlayer DMI and paves the way for enhancements of the DMI strength.

Abstract Evidence on the impact of chemotherapy on radiotherapy-induced second malignant neoplasms is controversial. We estimated how cisplatin modulates the in vitro response of two normal cell types to fractionated radiation. AHH-1 lymphoblasts and VH10 fibroblasts were irradiated at 1 Gy/fraction 5 and 3 times per week during 12 and 19 days, respectively, and simultaneously treated with 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.7 and 3.3 µM of cisplatin twice a week. Cell growth during treatment was monitored. Cell growth/cell death and endpoints related to accumulation of DNA damage and, thus, carcinogenesis, were studied up to 21 days post treatment in cells exposed to radiation and the lowest cisplatin doses. Radiation alone significantly reduced cell growth. The impact of cisplatin alone below 3.3 µM was minimal. Except the lowest dose of cisplatin in VH10 cells, cisplatin reduced the inhibitory effect of radiation on cell growth. Delayed cell death was highest in the combination groups while the accumulation of DNA damage did not reveal a clear pattern. In conclusion, fractionated, concomitant exposure to radiation and cisplatin reduces the inhibitory effect of radiation on cell proliferation of normal cells and does not potentiate delayed effects resulting from accumulation of DNA damage.

Arterial hypertension is a highly prevalent chronic disease worldwide, with several etiologies and treatments that may eventually have side effects or result in patients developing tolerance. There is growing interest in traditional medicine and functional foods to isolate biomolecules that could be useful as coadjuvants for treating several aliments. Pitaya, a desert fruit endemic in Mexico, is a rich source of bioactive molecules (betalains and phenolic compounds). In this work, the vasorelaxation properties of pitaya juice concentrate and fraction one were investigated using aortic and mesenteric rings from rats. The incubation of rings with pitaya juice concentrate or fraction one induced significant vasorelaxation, independent of the endothelium, and showed resistance to potassium channel blockers. This vasorelaxation was associated with the transmembrane influx of extracellular calcium through the vascular smooth muscle cells, with an inhibitory effect on the voltage-dependent calcium channel currents. Also, 400 mg/mL of pitaya juice concentrate in spontaneous hypertensive rats reduced their blood pressure for 48 h. Phytochemical analyses showed that the primary compounds in F1 were glycosidic in nature, and could be a complex mixture of disaccharides, dimeric disaccharides, or even tetrasaccharides. The glycosidic compounds found in F1 primarily contributed to vasodilatation, establishing a voltage-dependent calcium channel inhibition as a possible molecular target.

Specific T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 provided an overview of acquired immunity during the pandemic. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunity determines the severity of acute illness, but also might be related to the possible persistence of symptoms (long COVID). We retrospectively analyzed ex vivo longitudinal CD8+ T cell responses in 26 COVID-19 patients diagnosed with severe disease, initially (1 month) and long-term (10 months), and in a cohort of 32 vaccinated healthcare workers without previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. We used peptide-human leukocyte antigen (pHLA) dextramers recognizing 26 SARS-CoV-2-derived epitopes of viral and other non-structural proteins. Most patients responded to at least one of the peptides studied, mainly derived from non-structural ORF1ab proteins. After 10 months follow-up, CD8+ T cell responses were maintained at long term and reaction against certain epitopes (A*01:01-ORF1ab1637) was still detected and functional, showing a memory-like phenotype (CD127+ PD-1+). The total number of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells was significantly associated with protection against long COVID in these patients. Compared with vaccination, infected patients showed a less effective immune response to spike protein-derived peptides restricted by HLA. So, the A*01:01-S865 and A*24:02-S1208 dextramers were only recognized in vaccinated individuals. We conclude that initial SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cell response could be used as a marker to understand the evolution of severe disease and post-acute sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Advanced materials are most likely to bring future economic, environmental and social benefits. At the same time, they may pose challenges regarding their safety and sustainability along the entire lifecycle. This needs to be timely addressed by the stakeholders (industry, research, policy, funding and regulatory bodies). As part of a larger foresight project, this study aimed to identify areas of scientific research and technological development related to advanced materials, in particular advanced nanomaterials and the sub-group of smart nanomaterials. The study identified and collected data to build relevant research and innovation indicators and analyse trends, impact and other implications. Methods: This study consisted of an iterative process including a documentation phase followed by the identification, description and development of a set of core research and innovation indicators regarding scientific publications, EU projects and patents. The data was extracted mainly from SCOPUS, CORDIS and PATSTAT databases using a predefined search string that included representative keywords. The trends, distributions and other aspects reflected in the final version of the indicators were analysed, e.g. the number of items in a period of time, geographical distribution, organisations involved, categories of journals, funding programmes, costs and technology areas. Results: Generally, for smart nanomaterials the data used represent around 3.5% of the advanced nanomaterials data, while for each field analysed, they represent 4.4% for publications, 13% for projects and 1.1% for patents. The study shows current trends for advanced nanomaterials at a top-level information that can be further extended with sub-indicators. Generally, the results indicated a significant growth in research into advanced nanomaterials, including smart nanomaterials, in the last decade, leading to an increased availability of information. Conclusion: These indicators identify trends regarding scientific and technological achievements and represent an important element when examining possible impacts on society and policy implications associated to these areas.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known.ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison.ResultsProcedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

ObjectivesThis study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-U.S. institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.MethodsData were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States.ResultsReductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p

The educators of the 21st century have a great task ahead. In today's world, the educators are expected to have a great deal of professional and personal qualities, and extraordinary skills. This descriptive-correlational study aimed to determine perceptions of college students on a well-qualified educator. The study included 123 selected college students from different colleges in Central Luzon, Philippines using a convenience sampling technique. As data collection tool, a questionnaire prepared by the researcher team was used. Some of the findings of the study include: (1) the respondents answered agree on the context of professional and personal qualities that a teacher should have; (2) while in terms of the skills exhibited by an educator, it got an answer to Very Satisfactory. We also found significant differences in professional qualities, learning and innovation skills and life and career skills when grouped according to the respondent's profile. There was low-to-moderate evidence of the relationship that existed between the qualities and skills of an educator. The results further confirmed the relationship through regression analysis and found that communication skills affect the qualities of an educator. Based on the results, we discussed and recommended practical suggestions on professional, personal and skills improvements of an educator.

IntroductionExperimental studies complement epidemiological data on the biological effects of low doses and dose rates of ionizing radiation and help in determining the dose and dose rate effectiveness factor.MethodsHuman VH10 skin fibroblasts exposed to 25, 50, and 100 mGy of 137Cs gamma radiation at 1.6, 8, 12 mGy/h, and at a high dose rate of 23.4 Gy/h, were analyzed for radiation-induced short- and long-term effects. Two sample cohorts, i.e., discovery (n = 30) and validation (n = 12), were subjected to RNA sequencing. The pool of the results from those six experiments with shared conditions (1.6 mGy/h; 24 h), together with an earlier time point (0 h), constituted a third cohort (n = 12).ResultsThe 100 mGy-exposed cells at all abovementioned dose rates, harvested at 0/24 h and 21 days after exposure, showed no strong gene expression changes. DMXL2, involved in the regulation of the NOTCH signaling pathway, presented a consistent upregulation among both the discovery and validation cohorts, and was validated by qPCR. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that the NOTCH pathway was upregulated in the pooled cohort (p = 0.76, normalized enrichment score (NES) = 0.86). Apart from upregulated apical junction and downregulated DNA repair, few pathways were consistently changed across exposed cohorts. Concurringly, cell viability assays, performed 1, 3, and 6 days post irradiation, and colony forming assay, seeded just after exposure, did not reveal any statistically significant early effects on cell growth or survival patterns. Tendencies of increased viability (day 6) and reduced colony size (day 21) were observed at 12 mGy/h and 23.4 Gy/min. Furthermore, no long-term changes were observed in cell growth curves generated up to 70 days after exposure.DiscussionIn conclusion, low doses of gamma radiation given at low dose rates had no strong cytotoxic effects on radioresistant VH10 cells.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected diagnosis and treatment of noncommunicable diseases. Its effects on delivery of diagnostic care for cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death worldwide, have not been quantified.ObjectivesThe study sought to assess COVID-19's impact on global cardiovascular diagnostic procedural volumes and safety practices.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations in cardiovascular procedure volumes and safety practices resulting from COVID-19. Noninvasive and invasive cardiac testing volumes were obtained from participating sites for March and April 2020 and compared with those from March 2019. Availability of personal protective equipment and pandemic-related testing practice changes were ascertained.ResultsSurveys were submitted from 909 inpatient and outpatient centers performing cardiac diagnostic procedures, in 108 countries. Procedure volumes decreased 42% from March 2019 to March 2020, and 64% from March 2019 to April 2020. Transthoracic echocardiography decreased by 59%, transesophageal echocardiography 76%, and stress tests 78%, which varied between stress modalities. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the transcriptional repressor Nrg1 (Negative Regulator of Glucose-repressed genes) and the β-Zip transcription factor Rtg3 (ReTroGrade regulation) mediate glucose repression and signalling from the mitochondria to the nucleus, respectively. Here, we show a novel function of these two proteins, in which alanine promotes the formation of a chimeric Nrg1/Rtg3 regulator that represses the ALT2 gene (encoding an alanine transaminase paralog of unknown function). An NRG1/NRG2 paralogous pair, resulting from a post-wide genome small-scale duplication event, is present in the Saccharomyces genus. Neo-functionalization of only one paralog resulted in the ability of Nrg1 to interact with Rtg3. Both nrg1Δ and rtg3Δ single mutant strains were unable to use ethanol and showed a typical petite (small) phenotype on glucose. Neither of the wild-type genes complemented the petite phenotype, suggesting irreversible mitochondrial DNA damage in these mutants. Neither nrg1Δ nor rtg3Δ mutant strains expressed genes encoded by any of the five polycistronic units transcribed from mitochondrial DNA in S. cerevisiae. This, and the direct measurement of the mitochondrial DNA gene complement, confirmed that irreversible damage of the mitochondrial DNA occurred in both mutant strains, which is consistent with the essential role of the chimeric Nrg1/Rtg3 regulator in mitochondrial DNA maintenance.

Offensiveness Per [...], How do we judge whether a violation of someone's privacy is offensive? Currently, U.S. tort law requires privacy violations be "highly offensive to a reasonable person" to afford redress. However, our research reveals that there is no effective analysis--or rhyme or reason--to determine what conduct, disclosure, or implication is offensive. Our review of hundreds of privacy tort cases concludes that the ambiguity of the offensiveness prong has created opportunity for both significant legal errors and thriving biases, which often lead to discriminatory and neglectful treatment of women, racial minorities, and other marginalized groups. This is particularly alarming because the offensiveness analysis figures prominently in not only the most consequential privacy-related cases of our day, including data collection, geolocation tracking, revenge porn, sexual harassment, and transgender bathroom access, but also in corporate boardrooms, universities and schools, and policymaking bodies. This Article argues that we must develop a systematic mechanism to judge offensiveness, if the concept is to continue as a gatekeeper for privacy violations. Despite the concept's social significance and pervasiveness, alarmingly few legal scholars have written about offensiveness vis-a-vis privacy and its effects in entrenching social privilege and questionable norms. This Article seeks to fill this gap in privacy law with a view towards informing legal reform (including the upcoming Restatement (Third) of Torts) and providing guidelines for an unbiased analysis for judges and other decision-makers who must increasingly decide whether an alleged invasion of privacy is offensive. Guided by social science and philosophy, the Article proposes a factor-based rubric to guide decision-makers in determining whether conduct or content is highly offensive in the privacy context.

En el presente artículo se utiliza una perspectiva de rectoría de la salud, con el fin de interpretar las fortalezas y los obstáculos relativos a las capacidades de las autoridades nacionales de salud para responder ante la pandemia de COVID-19, a través del marco renovado de las funciones esenciales de salud pública (FESP). Sobre la base de una revisión bibliográfica, se sostiene que las capacidades institucionales que necesitan los países de la Región de las Américas para responder ante la pandemia de COVID-19 incluyen las cuatro etapas del nuevo ciclo de políticas en las FESP: la evaluación, la formulación de políticas, la asignación de recursos y el acceso. Aunque las autoridades de salud proporcionaron las funciones esenciales (por ejemplo, análisis de datos, diálogos intersectoriales en materia de políticas y asignación de fondos adicionales), las intervenciones que se implementaron estuvieron sujetas a las estructuras institucionales de cada país. Las autoridades de salud tuvieron que hacer frente a desafíos considerables como la fragmentación y la falta de capacidades institucionales y de personal, lo que pone en peligro la ejecución de actividades de respuesta eficaces y equitativas. Además, la respuesta a la pandemia ha sido desigual debido a algunas debilidades en la capacidad central de liderazgo y coordinación, la politización de las actividades de respuesta y las diferencias en la capacidad de respuesta a nivel subnacional. Esos desafíos son el reflejo de deficiencias estructurales que ya existían antes de que comenzara la pandemia, así como de la asignación de una prioridad baja a la salud pública en la agenda para el fortalecimiento de los sistemas de salud. En las agendas que se elaboren en el futuro debe darse prioridad a mejorar los elementos estructurales, fortalecer las capacidades de rectoría de las autoridades de salud y crear estructuras institucionales que garanticen tanto el acceso universal a la atención de salud como la cobertura universal de salud.

Objetivo. Determinar si existe una asociación entre las barreras de acceso informadas por mujeres de 15-49 años y la utilización de servicios esenciales de salud para mujeres, niños y niñas en América Latina. Método. Estudio transversal con base en modelos de regresión multivariada logística a partir de las Encuestas de Demografía y Salud de Bolivia, Haití, Honduras, Guatemala, Guyana, Nicaragua, Perú y República Dominicana. Resultados. Las barreras geográficas y financieras, la necesidad de obtener permiso para visitar al médico o no querer ir sola al establecimiento redujo significativamente la probabilidad de completar los controles prenatales y de tener un parto asistido. Las mujeres que notificaron dificultades para obtener permiso para visitar al médico redujeron su probabilidad de tener un examen de Papanicolau en los últimos 2 o 3 años, completar la vacunación de niños y niñas, y la probabilidad de buscar atención para sus hijos e hijas con cuadros de infección respiratoria aguda. No querer ir sola al centro de salud redujo la probabilidad de usar métodos anticonceptivos modernos. Conclusiones. La notificación de barreras de acceso por parte de las mujeres redujo de forma estadísticamente significativa la posibilidad de utilizar servicios esenciales de salud para ellas y para sus hijos e hijas. Las estrategias orientadas a eliminar barreras no solo deben enfocarse en mejorar la oferta de servicios, sino también abordar aspectos relacionados con las normas, los roles de género y el empoderamiento de las mujeres si se espera avanzar de manera sostenible hacia el acceso universal.

Background: Advanced materials are most likely to bring future economic, environmental and social benefits. At the same time, they may pose challenges regarding their safety and sustainability along the entire lifecycle. This needs to be timely addressed by the stakeholders (industry, research, policy, funding and regulatory bodies). As part of a larger foresight project, this study aimed to identify areas of scientific research and technological development related to advanced materials, in particular advanced nanomaterials and the sub-group of smart nanomaterials. The study identified and collected data to build relevant research and innovation indicators and analyse trends, impact and other implications. Methods: This study consisted of an iterative process including a documentation phase followed by the identification, description and development of a set of core research and innovation indicators regarding scientific publications, EU projects and patents. The data was extracted mainly from SCOPUS, CORDIS and PATSTAT databases using a predefined search string that included representative keywords. The trends, distributions and other aspects reflected in the final version of the indicators were analysed, e.g. the number of items in a period of time, geographical distribution, organisations involved, categories of journals, funding programmes, costs and technology areas. Results: Generally, for smart nanomaterials the data used represent around 3.5% of the advanced nanomaterials data, while for each field analysed, they represent 4.4% for publications, 13% for projects and 1.1% for patents. The study shows current trends for advanced nanomaterials at a top-level information that can be further extended with sub-indicators. Generally, the results indicated a significant growth in research into advanced nanomaterials, including smart nanomaterials, in the last decade, leading to an increased availability of information. Conclusion: These indicators identify trends regarding scientific and technological achievements and represent an important element when examining possible impacts on society and policy implications associated to these areas.

Change of directions (COD) involves multidirectional and complex actions, with performance influenced by multiple factors. As lower limb strength is one of the most determinant of COD performance, the present study aimed to (a) explore the differences in strength outcomes across different lower limb muscle actions between faster and slower basketball players in COD actions at different angles and (b) analyse the relationship between isometric, concentric and eccentric strength outcomes and COD performance at different cutting angles. Twenty‐five basketball players (44% female) completed a battery of tests, encompassing isokinetic and isometric squat strength assessments, along with COD tests at 45°, 90° and 180°. Players were categorised as 'low‐performance' and 'high‐performance' groups based on execution time in COD, facilitating a comparison between performance groups. Results indicated that concentric strength showed the greatest differences between performance groups at 45° COD (effect size ≥ 0.813; p ≤ 0.034). Isometric and eccentric strength demonstrated a moderate‐to‐large relationship with 90° COD performance (Rho ≥ 0.394; p ≤ 0.045), and all muscle actions exhibited a large relationship with 180° COD (Rho ≥ 0.445; p ≤ 0.030). Moreover, the fastest players showed higher levels of concentric strength relative to eccentric strength, regardless of the cutting angle. These findings hold practical applications, suggesting that basketball coaches should train a specific kind of muscle action depending on the individual players' COD demands, focusing on improving the rapid eccentric force application while striving to reduce the eccentric/concentric ratio. Highlights: Strength is undeniably a key indicator in change of directions (COD) performance. The relationship between strength outcome measures and COD proficiency depends on the cutting angle.Cutting angles below 90° emphasise concentric strength, while those above 90° exhibit a stronger reliance on isometric and eccentric strength.Rapid eccentric force production strongly correlates with COD performance across all cutting angles. In yeasts, the Leu3 transcriptional factor regulates the expression of genes encoding enzymes of the leucine biosynthetic pathway, in which the first committed step is catalyzed by α-isopropylmalate synthase (α-IPMS). This enzyme is feedback inhibited by leucine, and its product, α-isopropylmalate (α-IPM), constitutes a Leu3 co-activator. In S. cerevisiae, the ScBAT1 and ScBAT2 genes encode branched-chain aminotransferase isozymes. ScBAT1 transcriptional activation is dependent on the α-IPM concentration and independent of chromatin organization, while that of ScBAT2 is α-IPM-independent but dependent on chromatin organization. This study aimed at understanding whether chromatin remodeling determines the transcriptional regulation of orthologous KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 genes in Kluyveromyces lactis and Lachancea kluyveri under conditions in which the branched-chain amino acids are synthesized or degraded. The results indicate that, in K. lactis, KlBAT1 expression is reduced under catabolic conditions, while in L. kluyveri, LkBAT1 displays a constitutive expression profile. The chromatin organization of KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 promoters did not change, maintaining the Leu3-binding sites free of nucleosomes. Comparison of the α-IPMS sensitivities to feedback inhibition suggested that the main determinant of transcriptional activation of the KlBAT1 and LkBAT1 genes might be the availability of the α-IPM co-activator, as reported previously for the ScBAT1 gene of S. cerevisiae.
