- Abstract
The energy resolution of the barrel part of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter has been studied using electrons of 20 to 250 GeV in a test beam. The incident electron's energy was reconstructed by summing the energy measured in arrays of 3×3 or 5×5 channels. There was no significant amount of correlated noise observed within these arrays. For electrons incident at the centre of the studied 3×3 arrays of crystals, the mean stochastic term was measured to be 2.8% and the mean constant term to be 0.3%. The amount of the incident electrons' energy which is contained within the array depends on its position of incidence. The variation of the containment with position is corrected for using the distribution of the measured energy within the array. For uniform illumination of a crystal with 120 GeV electrons a resolution of 0.5% was achieved. The energy resolution meets the design goal for the detector. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

To our knowledge, the study presented in this article is the first comprehensive comparative study examining several addictive substances or behaviours, evaluated from the standpoint of both harm and benefit, and considered from an individual and societal perspective. The authors studied 8 commonly used addictive substances: alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, heroin, amphetamines, ecstasy and the other synthetic drugs (all except ecstasy and amphetamines), and one common addictive behaviour, gambling, designated as an “addictive substance”. Six criteria were established to cover the whole spectrum of potential harm caused by the consumption of these substances. Three of them concern potential harm suffered by the user (acute and chronic health risks, addiction); the other 3 concern harm to society: health and social costs, legal costs, social consequences of behavioural problems.

- Abstract
Mineralogy offers a large database to search for Li- or Na-based compounds having suitable structural features for acting as electrode materials, LiFePO4 being one example. Here we further explore this avenue and report on the electrochemical properties of the bloedite type compounds Na 2M(SO4)2·4H2O (M = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) and their dehydrated phases Na2M(SO4) 2 (M = Fe, Co), whose structures have been solved via complementary synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Among these compounds, the hydrated and anhydrous iron-based phases show electrochemical activity with the reversible release/uptake of 1 Na+ or 1 Li+ at high voltages of ∼3.3 V vs. Na+/Na0 and ∼3.6 V vs. Li +/Li0, respectively. Although the reversible capacities remain lower than 100 mA h g-1, we hope this work will stress further the importance of mineralogy as a source of inspiration for designing eco-efficient electrode materials. © 2014 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

- Abstract
New materials initially designed for battery electrodes are often of interest for magnetic study, because their chemical compositions include 3d transition metals. We report here on the magnetic properties of marinite phases Li2M(SO4)2 (M = Fe, Co, Mn) and Li 1Fe(SO4)2, which all order antiferromagnetically at low temperature. From neutron powder diffraction, we propose a model for their ground-state magnetic structures. The magnetism of marinite Li2M(SO4)2 compounds unambiguously results from super-super-exchange interactions; therefore, these materials can be considered as a model case for which the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules can be tested. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

- Abstract
The oxygen to metal ratio (O/M) is directly related to oxygen potential, which strongly influences the sintering and irradiation performance of nuclear fuels. A better understanding of these two parameters is therefore of major interest. To further ascertain the correlation between O/M ratio and oxygen potential in Am-bearing MOX, several ther-modynamic descriptions are being developed. Despite their differences, they all involve the valence of actinide cations (e.g. U, Pu and Am) as essential parameters. However, as no experimental data on their valence is available, these models rely on assumptions. In the present work, we coupled X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to follow the behaviour of Pu and Am in three hypo-stoichiometric, U-free Pu1-yAmyO2-x compounds. We provide for the first time a quantitative determination of Pu and Am valences, demonstrating that plutonium reduction from Pu4+ to Pu3+ starts only, once americium reduction from Am4+ to Am3+ is completed. This result fills in an important gap in experimental data, thereby improving the thermodynamic description of nuclear fuels. At last, we suggest that the O/M ratio may still evolve at room temperature for high Am content, which is of main concern for the fabrication of Am-loaded MOX and their storage prior to irradiation.

- Abstract
We report on the preparation and electrochemical characterization of Li 2M(SO 4) 2 (M = Co, Fe), where the Fe-based phase was previously unknown. Both compounds can be made at low temperatures (< 320 °C) and the Fe-based phase displays an open circuit voltage of 3.83 V vs. Li +/Li 0 for the Fe 3+/Fe 2+ redox potential. This corresponds to the highest voltage ever obtained for the Fe 3+/Fe 2+ redox couple in an iron-based, fluorine-free compound and is only matched by the triplite phase of LiFeSO 4F. While the theoretical capacity of 102 mA h g - 1 will likely limit the commercial prospects for this phase, knowledge of the structure will provide useful insight into the structural origin of these increased potentials. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The development of new electrode materials, which are composed of Earth-abundant elements and that can be made via eco-efficient processes, is becoming absolutely necessary for reasons of sustainable production. The 3.9 V triplite-phase of LiFeSO 4F, compared to the 3.6 V tavorite-phase, could satisfy this requirement provided the currently complex synthetic pathway can be simplified. Here, we present our work aiming at better understanding the reaction mechanism that govern its formation as a way to optimize its preparation. We first demonstrate, using complementary X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies, that triplite-LiFeSO 4F can nucleate from tavorite-LiFeSO 4F via a reconstructive process whose kinetics are significantly influenced by moisture and particle morphology. Perhaps the most spectacular finding is that it is possible to prepare electrochemically active triplite-LiFeSO 4F from anhydrous precursors using either reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) synthesis in a mere 20 min at 320 °C or room-temperature ball milling for 3 h. These new pathways appear to be strongly driven by the easy formation of a disordered phase with higher entropy, as both techniques trigger disorder via rapid annealing steps or defect creation. Although a huge number of phases adopts the tavorite structure-type, this new finding offers both a potential way to prepare new compositions in the triplite structure and a wealth of opportunities for the synthesis of new materials which could benefit many domains beyond energy storage. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

- Abstract
Our work in metal fluorosulphate chemistry, which was triggered by the discovery of the tavorite-phase of LiFeSO 4F, has unveiled many novel Li- and Na-based phases with desirable electrochemical and/or transport properties. Further exploring this rich crystal chemistry, we have synthesized the Na-based magnesium, copper and zinc fluorosulphates, which crystallise in the maxwellite (tavorite-like framework) structure just as their Fe and Co counterparts, which were previously reported. These phases show ionic conductivities in the range of ∼10 -7 S cm -1 or ∼10 -11 S cm -1 depending upon their synthesis process and no reversible electrochemical activity versus Na. © 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
Recently unveiled 'alkali metal fluorosulphate (AMSO 4F)' class of compounds offers promising electrochemical and transport properties. Registering conductivity value as high as 10 -7 S cm -1 in NaMSO 4F phases, we explored the fluorosulphate group to design novel compounds with high Li-ion conductivity suitable for solid electrolyte applications. In the process, we produced sillimanite-structured LiZnSO 4F by low temperature synthesis (T ≤ 300 °C). Examining this phase, we accidentally discovered the possibility of improving the ionic conductivity of poor conductors by forming a monolayer of ionic liquid at their particle surface. This phenomenon was studied by solid-state NMR, XPS and AC impedance spectroscopy techniques. Further, similar trends were noticed in other fluorosulphate materials like tavorite LiCoSO 4F and triplite LiMnSO 4F. With this study, we propose 'ionic liquid grafting' as an interfacial route to enable good Li-ion conductivity in otherwise poor conducting ceramics.

- Abstract
Recently in the Li-ion battery community there has been an intense amount of attention focusing on developing positive electrodes which operate on the Fe 2+/Fe 3+ redox potential given that the environmental and economic advantages of Fe-based compounds compared to other transition metals are tremendous. Here we report that we have succeeded in preparing for the first time LiFeSO 4F in the triplite structure which shows an open circuit voltage of 3.9 V versus Li with a reversible capacity of approximately 85 mA h g - 1, still well below the theoretical value of 148 mA h g - 1 due to poor electrode kinetics. Nevertheless, we additionally found that the volume change on removal of Li is 0.6%. Once optimized, this triplite phase of LiFeSO 4F could stand as a promising contender to LiFePO 4. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel hydrated fluoroselenate NaCoSeO 4F•2H 2O has been synthesized, and its structure determined. Like its sulfate homologue, NaCoSO 4F•2H 2O, the structure contains one-dimensional chains of corner-sharing MO 4F 2 octahedra linked together through F atoms sitting in a trans configuration with respect to each other. The magnetic properties of the two phases have been investigated using powder neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements which indicate antiferromagnetic ordering along the length of the chains and result in a G-type antiferromagnetic ground state. Both compounds exhibit a Néel temperature near 4 K, and undergo a field-induced magnetic phase transition in fields greater than 3 kOe. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

- Abstract
Searching for possible new cathode materials with the ability to outperform LiFePO 4, our group has recently discovered LiFeSO 4F, a novel metal fluorosulphate compound. Needing no further optimization, it delivers excellent reversible capacity (∼140 mAh/g) involving a 3.6 V Fe II/III redox plateau. This parent fluorosulphate phase has been synthesized by three different routes; namely ionothermal synthesis, solid-state synthesis and polyol-assisted synthesis. These low temperature synthesis routes are described focusing on synthesis of LiFeSO 4F. Furthermore, these methods were successfully employed to unravel other LiMSO 4F compounds (M =Co/Ni/Mn/Zn) as well as sodium-based metal fluorosulphate NaMSO 4F compounds (M = Fe/Co/Ni/Mn). These syntheses were realized at temperature not exceeding 300°C. We have discovered many interesting and at times intriguing structural, electrochemical and transport properties in these fluorosulphate materials. A few of these findings are illustrated to show the richness of the metal fluorosulphate chemistry. ©The Electrochemical Society.

SFRs will be able to burn long-lived minor actinides (MA) such as Americium by adding them homogeneously to the fuel in a small amount (2 to 6%). Because oxygen to metal ratio (O/M) has a direct impact on irradiation performance, a thorough knowledge of its correlation with oxygen potential during manufacturing and especially sintering is of major concern. A study by Osaka et al. [ ] highlights a conflicting redox behaviour of Am and Pu cations responsible for an unusual oxygen potential vs. O/M ratio relationship in Am-doped MOX. The reason might be that interactions between U and Am predominate and those between Pu and Am can be neglected [ ]. According to the authors, this should result in U being oxidized to a pentavalent state since Am is likely to be trivalent [ ]. We recently performed a coupled X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) characterization on substoichiometric Am-containing MOX [ ]. Our results show that Am reduction to Am+III is completed before any reduction of Pu is yet observed. Surprisingly, no pentavalent U was evidenced and the behaviour of Am tends to solely influence that of Pu. In the present work, to go deeper into the underlying phenomenon involved in the correlated redox behavior of Pu and Am, we focused on U-free sub-stoichiometric (Pu,Am)O2-x compounds. Three compositions were prepared via conventional solid-state reaction under Ar/5%H2 (1800K; 50h): (Pu0.992Am0.008)O2-x, (Pu0.9Am0.1)O2-x and (Pu0.8Am0.2)O2-x. XRD and XAS analyses were combined to selectively probe the long-range and the short-range order and the local environment of both cations. In particular, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) allows to quantitatively determining the oxidation states for each cation. XRD shows a monophasic system fo

- Abstract
The synthesis of PuCrO3 compound starting from metallic or sesquioxide chromium and PuO2 powder mixtures in stoichiometric ratios has been studied at different temperatures under atmospheres with a varying oxygen potential (Ar, Ar + 5% H2, Ar + 5% H2 + 850 ppm H2O). The structure of the polycrystalline perovskite compound PuCrO3 was investigated by X-ray powder pattern fitting. A Rietveld analysis was performed using the computer program JANA 2000. PuCrO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbnm with a = 543±2 Å, b = 549±2 Å and c = 771±2 Å. A XAS study gave oxidation states +III for both chromium and plutonium. The heat capacity of PuCrO3 was measured by means of a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in the temperature range of 3731373 K. Debye temperature as well as electronic defect energies have been fitted from these measurements. Enthalpy increment, entropy and free energy function of PuCrO3 have been calculated from the measured heat capacity and estimated data as a function of temperature.

- Abstract
The amplitude of the signal collected from the PbWO4 crystals of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter is reconstructed by a digital filtering technique. The amplitude reconstruction has been studied with test beam data recorded from a fully equipped barrel supermodule. Issues specific to data taken in the test beam are investigated, and the implementation of the method for CMS data taking is discussed.

- Abstract
Performance tests of some aspects of the CMS ECAL were carried out on modules of the "barrel" sub-system in 2002 and 2003. A brief test with high energy electron beams was made in late 2003 to validate prototypes of the new Very Front End electronics. The final versions of the monitoring and cooling systems, and of the high and low voltage regulation were used in these tests. The results are consistent with the performance targets including those for noise and overall energy resolution, required to fulfil the physics programme of CMS at the LHC.

- Abstract
Pathogenicity of Eimeria mulardi Chauve et al., 1994 in experimentally infected mule-ducks. Precision on pathological stagesThe pathogenicity of Eimeria mulardi has been studied in mule-ducklings orally inoculated with sporulated oocysts. With two dose levels (105 or 106 oocysts per bird), a significant loss of body-weight was observed, whereas no loss of weight was observed with a dose level of 104.With a dose of 106 oocysts per bird, inflammatory and haemorrhagic changes associated with obstruction mainly involving the end of the jejunum, the ileum and the caeca were seen from day 5 post-inoculation. Pathogenicity of Eimeria mulardi is due to the last generation of meronts and essentially to gamonts.

International audience; The synthesis of PuCrO$_3$ compound starting from metallic and/or sesquioxide chromium and PuO2 powder mixtures in stoichiometric ratios has been studied at different temperatures under atmospheres with a varying oxygen potential (Ar, Ar + 5% H2, Ar + 5% H$_2$ + 850 ppm H$_2$O). The structure of the polycrystalline perovskite compound PuCrO$_3$ was investigated by means of an X ray powder pattern fitting. A Rietveld analysis was performed using the computer program JANA2000. PuCrO$_3$ crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbnm with a = 549.58(3) pm, b = 771.99(3) pm and c = 543.97(3) pm. A XAS study gave oxidation states +III for both chromium and plutonium. The heat capacity of PuCrO3 was measured by means of a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in the temperature range of 373-1373 K. Debye temperature as well as electronic defect energies have been fitted from these measurements. Enthalpy increment, entropy and free energy function of PuCrO$_3$ have been calculated from the measured heat capacity and estimated data as a function of temperature.
