This social studies curriculum with a science component contains two sections. The first section targets elementary schools and includes six lessons. The second section is intended for middle schools and high schools and contains four units. These two sections overlap with each other and can be used by teachers from any grade level. The content of the elementary school curriculum includes: (1) "The River Runs Wild and Scenic"; (2) "The River Flows through Life"; (3) "A Map of Our Own"; (4) "Stopping along the Lamprey: The Field Trip"; (5) "People of the River"; and (6) "A Message to the Lamprey River." The contents of the middle and high school curriculum include information on ongoing activities such as journal writing and field trips, background activities on watersheds and the Lamprey, research projects on wildlife, pollution issues, cultural and natural history, and land-use issues. The curriculum standards covered are also listed in each section. The featured videotape focuses on interactions between the river and people and the history of the river. (YDS)

This curriculum packet was developed to provide environmental education through a series of hands-on activities for the classroom and the outdoor setting of South Mountains State Park, North Carolina. Targeted for grades 4 through 7, this packet meets the established curriculum objectives of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Students are exposed to major concepts such as water quality, indicator species, stewardship of natural resources, watersheds, natural resource management, the Jacob's Fork River, river basins, riparian areas, and water pollution (point and nonpoint sources). The packet is divided into eight sections: (1) introduction to the North Carolina State Parks system, South Mountains State Park, and the activity packet; (2) activity summary and correlation chart showing how each activity correlates with Department of Public Instruction objectives; (3) pre-visit activities; (4) on-site activities; (5) post-visit activities; (6) vocabulary; (7) references; and (8) a scheduling worksheet, permission form, and program evaluation form. Each set of activities is comprised of three activities. The first activity includes curriculum objectives for grade levels 4-5. The second and third activities list learning skills and subject areas covered. All activities contain descriptions of location, group size, estimated time needed, appropriate season, materials needed, major concepts covered, and activity objectives, as well as background information for the educator, instructions, and worksheets. This student workbook is designed as a companion to a day of field studies investigating water quality and stream health for sixth grade students in several northeastern Tennessee counties. Nineteen environmental education activities cover topics including wildlife species, wildlife habitats (instream and riparian), connections between water quality and wildlife, water pollution, hydrology, land use, soil and water, wild plants and flowers, farming techniques, erosion prevention, forest ecology, waste disposal, household hazardous wastes, landfills, and precycling and recycling. The workbook provides the following information for each activity: objective, key words, summary (background information that refers to the northeastern Tennessee environment), and study questions. This activity guide is intended to increase student awareness and understanding about the Colorado River Basin. Each activity includes objectives, procedures, materials list, related activities, questions for students, and related information. The activities are varied to appeal to a wide range of learning styles and modalities and are interdisciplinary in design. The first chapter is an overview for teachers and the remaining chapters contain the activities: (1) "Wildlife Webs"; (2) "Big Basin Blues"; (3) "Rights and Wrongs"; (4) "Water in the Air"; (5) "Canyon Country Art"; (6) "Counting Water"; (7) "Ancient Waters"; (8) "Invisible Passengers"; and (9) "Habitat Hazards." This learning packet, one in a series of eight, was developed by the Eno River State Park in North Carolina for Grades 5-6 to teach about various aspects of water life on the Eno River. Loose-leaf pages are presented in nine sections that contain: (1) introductions to the North Carolina State Park System, the Eno River State Park, and to the park's activity packet; (2) a summary of the activities that includes major concepts and objectives covered; (3) pre-visit activities on map trivia and dichotomous classification keys; (4) on-site activities on river flow, pH values, water bugs and river sediment; (5) post-visit activities on water pollution; (6) a list of 69 related vocabulary words; (7) park and parental permission forms for the visit; and (8) blank pages for taking notes. This activity booklet was designed to accompany a floating barge exhibition entitled "Always a River" that brought together the experiences of the past, the opportunities of the present, and the hopes of the future afforded by the Ohio River. The interdisciplinary activities in this booklet aim at enriching the lives of young people and making them more knowledgeable of the ecological and environmental impact that the Ohio River exerts on their lives. Topics include: the river and its tributaries; geology; prehistoric dwellers; surveying and mapping; human-made changes; settlement; environment and ecosystem; commerce, navigation, and industry; imagination; organizations; and local cities and towns. The materials in this packet are designed to aid teachers in the implementation of a science field studies unit concerning tidal rivers. The packet consists of the following: (1) background material for the teacher; (2) lab exercises; (3) field activities; and (4) classroom activities. The overall purpose of this packet is to provide information for organizing and conducting a marine field study, and interpreting and using data gathered from the study. Concepts such as tidal flow theory, the relation of specific gravity to salinity, proper field procedure, and data correlations are included. The activity is designed for secondary school students. Included are objectives, student activity materials, data sheets, discussion topics, a posttest, and a selected bibliography. (RH)

This teacher's guide, one of nine teacher packages developed for use in the sequential, hands-on, field-oriented, K-8 environmental education program of the Martin County Schools in Florida, was developed for use with elementary children in grade six prior to and after a visit to an environmental studies center located near an estuarine area. The grade six program centers around the theme "River Investigations" and includes the use of a survey boat to investigate the siltation of a river bottom, changes in salinity, and other factors of the estuarine ecosystem. This guide contains teacher instructions, scripts, tests with keys, and a copy of all student materials. Three slide/tape programs are not included. General and specific program objectives are stated and a program outline, including learning activities to be completed at the school and environmental studies center, is detailed. (BT)

This module is part of a series designed to be used by life science students for instruction in the application of physical theory to ecosystem operation. Most modules contain computer programs which are built around a particular application of a physical process. This module deals specifically with concepts that are basic to fluid flow and streams. The objective is to be able to describe the types of flow, as well as the velocity and discharge of particular streams. These characteristics are used in comparisons of streams, stream classification, flood control, control of sedimentation, and gauging of available water for downstream use. A method used for determining discharge and velocity for a section of a stream, the concept of continuity, is presented. This concept also forms the basis for understanding the relationships of aquatic organisms to running water. Basic concepts included in this module are developed and used in later modules. In this investigation, students examine the topographic characteristics, water quality and human developments along Ohio's Olentangy River. They then learn about the Ohio Scenic Rivers Act and attempt to classify the Olentangy in accordance with this legislation. Presented are both a students' guide and a teacher's guide. The latter includes an overview of the unit, a materials list, teaching suggestions, answers to discussion questions and eight evaluation items. These activities can be modified to deal with almost any river in Ohio. (Author/WB)

The materials in this educational packet consist of an overview, three lesson plans, student data sheets, and a poster. The overview describes the flow of a river from its source to its mouth. A glossary and list of reference materials are included. The lesson plans provide a statement of purpose, list of learning outcomes, and instructional strategies. The first two lessons (involving a treasure hunt in which students match objects in the environment to a list of characteristics, and survey a river/stream and evaluate it from the point of view of a plant or animal) include a quiz and student data sheet. The third lesson is a water resources game in which students learn about the management problems of rivers and streams regarding water use. Ready-to-duplicate game items (including the game board) are provided. The two-sided poster has (on side 1) three pictures showing a river from its source to its mouth and (on side 2) background information for the water resources game in the third lesson. An additional student sheet is also included with a maze to complete on one side and instructions for making a note on a piece of driftwood on the other side. (JN)

This teacher's guide for the instruction of economic concepts at the seventh grade level uses Evansville's (Indiana) historical development to further the study of concepts such as economic needs and wants, factors of production, and opportunity cost. The first part of the guide, "Introducing Basic Economic Concepts," uses the text "Enterprise Island: A Simple Economy" and the student activity booklet "A Study of Basic Economics." The corresponding chapters from the activity booklet are reproduced for each unit. The second part of the guide focuses on Evansville, and the reading materials and student activity sheets are reproduced as student handouts. An 18-item test on economic terms and a 49-item examination on Evansville are included. (DJC)

Designed to help teachers develop students' awareness and understanding of some of Hawaii's endangered aquatic resources, this module contains activities and instructional suggestions for use with intermediate as well as high school students. The module is divided into two sections which explore the streams and estuaries of Kauai. Activities in each section contain a learning objective, material list, procedures, and in most cases discussion questions. Many of the activities provide opportunities for students and teachers to interact directly with the environment. Although the module deals with specific sites on Kauai, the information and activities presented are applicable to comparable sites on any of the other islands. Appendices contain several instructional directives among which are: (1) identification guide to exotic stream fuana; (2) identification and biology of native stream animals; (3) plankton net construction; (4) identification guide to life in Hawaiian estuaries; (5) tables for conversion of specific gravity to salinity and (6) suggested additional activities for estuary field trips. This investigation is designed to help students learn landmarks and possible dangers for settlers who traveled down the Ohio River in 1789. The document describes a simulation in which the students attempt to survive a flatboat trip from Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) to Losantiville (Cincinnati, Ohio). Along the trail are points of historical interest. At each site the students can find out more about the river and the lives of the people who used it as a route into the interior of the continent. The activities in the student booklet are designed to enable students to: (1) list the natural and human factors that determined whether a flatboat family could survive a river trek in 1789; (2) use compass directions and distances to plot a map of a portion of the Ohio River; (3) describe some events and people important to Ohio's history in the late 1700s; (4) identify the modern names of towns and tributaries along the Ohio River; and (5) follow directions carefully to complete a computer program. The teacher guide includes the same activities as the student booklet, but is supplemented with some additional background information, a list of references, and the answers to the review questions for students. This curriculum guide is the last (Series VII) in a six-volume set that comprises the Sea Week Curriculum Series developed in Alaska. The guide lends itself to the sixth-grade curriculum but can be adapted to preschool, secondary, and adult education. Eight units contain 43 activities with worksheets that cover the following topics: (1) the values of rivers, wetlands, and the sea; (2) marine mammals; (3) logging, fisheries, and wildlife; (4) oil and oil development; (5) community planning along Alaska's coasts and rivers; (6) weather; (7) a review of Sea Week's past; and (8) a Sea Week camping experience. An introduction provides information designed to help teachers become familiar with the contents of the curriculum guide and to assist in planning. Each unit contains information on student objectives, and activity background, vocabulary, materials, and procedure. Activities engage students in interdisciplinary projects that involve the skills of classifying, identifying, comparing, computing, measuring, game playing, role playing, writing, observing, mapping, collecting data, recording data, and analyzing data. An annotated bibliography contains 200 resources. A packet of teacher reproducible worksheet masters accompanies the curriculum guide. (LZ)

This environmental unit is one of a series designed for integration within an existing curriculum. The unit is self-contained and requires minimal teacher preparation. The philosophy of the units is based on an experience-oriented process that encourages self-paced independent student work. In this unit, students construct a stream profile based on information collected at a portion of a local stream. Teams of three, working ten feet apart, are responsible for recording data on temperature, elevation, type of stream bottom, and plants and animals in the section. The data are then combined with the rest of the class and the profile drawn. Students are prompted to note patterns described by the stream profile and to relate that information to other similar streams. For teachers, the unit includes directions for building the equipment needed, ways of organizing a field trip to the stream area, methods of collecting and recording data, and questions for discussion. The activities can be used with students in grades 4-9. (MA)
