Background: Guidelines recommend switching the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) estimation from the CKiD-U25 to the CKD-EPI formula at age 18. We investigated how this would affect chronic kidney disease (CKD) classification. Methods: Serum creatinine was enzymatically measured in 1061 samples from 914 community-based 10–23-year-olds from Tlaxcala, Mexico, a region where urinary biomarkers demonstrated early kidney damage associated with exposure to inorganic toxins in a pediatric population. We calculated their eGFR using CKiD-U25, modified Schwartz, the first and modified Pottel full-age spectrum (FAS), and CKD-EPI formulae. Correlation analysis characterized the CKD stage stratified by age and sex. Results: At baseline, the median age was 13 (IQR: 12, 15) years, and 55% were female. Median CKiD-U25 eGFR was 96.9 (IQR: 83.3, 113.3) mL/min/1.73 m2, significantly lower than the CKD-EPI eGFR, which was 140.8 (IQR: 129.9, 149.3) mL/min/1.73 m2 (p < 0.0001, Wilcoxon rank test). The mean bias was 36.99 ± 12.89 mL/min/1.73 m2. Pearson correlation was r = 0.8296 (95% confidence interval 0.0898–0.8474). There was a better correlation between the modified Schwartz (r = 0.9421 (0.9349, 0.9485)) and the Pottel FAS (r = 0.9299 (0.9212, 0.9376)) formulae. Agreement was deficient when the eGFR was >75 mL/min/1.73 m2 in younger age and female sex. Modified Schwartz identified 281 (26.4%) measurements as having CKD 2 and 3 (2+), U25 identified 401 (37.7%) measurements as having CKD 2+, FAS identified 267 (25.1%) and modified FAS identified 282 (30%) measurements as having CKD 2+, and CKD-EPI identified 51 (4.8%) measurements as having CKD 2+, respectively. Conclusions: In this population, there needed to be better agreement between the various eGFR formulae. CKD-EPI identifies substantially fewer at-risk participants as having CKD. Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) are transforming the landscape of modern catalysis and offer sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. Owing to their exceptional surface area-to-volume ratio, PdNPs exhibit superior catalytic activity, selectivity, and recyclability, making them ideal for greener chemical processes. Recent innovations have focused on improving the stability and reusability of PdNPs through environmentally benign approaches, such as water-based reactions, renewable stabilizers, and magnetic nanoparticle supports. Advances in catalyst design, including PdNP immobilization on magnetic nanosilica for enhanced recyclability in Suzuki–Miyaura reactions, nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets achieving up to ninefold improvements in turnover frequencies, and biodegradable biopolymer matrices that reduce environmental impact, have effectively addressed key challenges such as catalyst leaching, support degradation, and agglomeration. The shift from conventional catalysis to these cutting-edge nanocatalytic techniques signifies a critical movement toward sustainable chemistry, positioning PdNPs at the forefront of industrial applications and the future of eco-friendly chemical synthesis. The electrochemical reduction from nitrate (NO3RR) to ammonia (NH3) provides a decentralized and environmentally friendly route for sustainable ammonia production while addressing the urgent issue of nitrate pollution in water bodies. Recent advancements in NO3RR research have improved catalyst designs, mechanistic understanding, and electrolyzer technologies, enhancing selectivity, yield, and energy efficiency. This review explores cutting-edge developments, focusing on innovative designs for catalysts and electrolyzers, such as membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and electrolyzer configurations, understanding the role of membranes in MEA designs, and various types of hybrid and membrane-free reactors. Furthermore, the integration of NO3RR with anodic oxidation reactions has been demonstrated to improve overall efficiency by generating valuable co-products. However, challenges such as competitive hydrogen evolution, catalyst degradation, and scalability remain critical barriers to large-scale adoption. We provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress, evaluate current limitations, and identify future research directions for realizing the full potential of NO3RR in sustainable nitrogen cycling and ammonia synthesis. The Qidong Liver Cancer Institute (QDLCI) and the Qidong Cancer Registry were established in 1972 with input from doctors, other medical practitioners, and non-medical investigators arriving from urban centers such as Shanghai and Nanjing. Medical teams were established to quantify the extent of primary liver cancer in Qidong, a corn-growing peninsula on the north side of the Yangtze River. High rates of liver cancer were documented and linked to several etiologic agents, including aflatoxins. Local corn, the primary dietary staple, was found to be consistently contaminated with high levels of aflatoxins, and bioassays using this corn established its carcinogenicity in ducks and rats. Observational studies noted a positive association between levels of aflatoxin in corn and incidence of liver cancer across townships. Biomarker studies measuring aflatoxin B1 and its metabolite aflatoxin M1 in biofluids reflected the exposures. Approaches to decontamination of corn from aflatoxins were also studied. In 1993, investigators from Johns Hopkins University were invited to visit the QDLCI to discuss chemoprevention studies in some townships. A series of placebo-controlled clinical trials were conducted using oltipraz (a repurposed drug), chlorophyllin (an over-the-counter drug), and beverages prepared from 3-day-old broccoli sprouts (rich in the precursor phytochemical for sulforaphane). Modulation of biomarkers of aflatoxin DNA and albumin adducts established proof of principle for the efficacy of these agents in enhancing aflatoxin detoxication. Serendipitously, by 2012, aflatoxin exposures quantified using biomarker measurements documented a many hundred-fold reduction. In turn, the Cancer Registry documents that the age-standardized incidence rate of liver cancer is now 75% lower than that seen in the 1970s. This reduction is seen in Qidongese who have never received the hepatitis B vaccination. Aflatoxin mitigation driven by economic changes switched the dietary staple of contaminated corn to rice coupled with subsequent dietary diversity leading to lower aflatoxin exposures. This 50-year effort to understand the etiology of liver cancer in Qidong provides the strongest evidence for aflatoxin mitigation as a public health strategy for reducing liver cancer burden in exposed, high-risk populations. Background/Objectives: Novel boron dipyrromethene derivatives with a heterocyclic, benzoxadiazole substituent were obtained as potential candidates for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancers. Photochemical properties (e.g., singlet oxygen generation quantum yields (ΦΔ), absorption, and emission spectra) and cytotoxic activity studies in normoxic and hypoxic conditions were performed to verify the potential of novel BODIPYs as photosensitizers for PDT. Methods: Obtained dyes were characterized using mass spectrometry and various NMR techniques. The relative method with Rose Bengal as a reference and 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran as a singlet oxygen quencher was used to determine ΦΔ values. The in vitro studies were conducted on human ovarian carcinoma (A2780) and human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) cells. Results: Photochemical studies showed that the presence of benzoxadiazole moiety only slightly affected the localization of the absorption maxima but resulted in fluorescence quenching compared with meso-phenyl-substituted analogs. In addition, brominated and iodinated analogs revealed a high ability to generate singlet oxygen. Anticancer studies showed high light-induced cytotoxicity of BODIPYs containing heavy atoms with very low IC50 values in the 3.5–10.3 nM range. Further experiments revealed that both compounds also demonstrated phototoxic activity under hypoxic conditions. The most potent cytotoxic effect in these conditions was observed in the iodinated BODIPY analog with IC50 values of about 0.3 and 0.4 μM for A2780 and MDA-MB-231 cells, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study highlighted the advantages and some potential drawbacks of BODIPY compounds with heavy atoms and benzoxadiazole moiety as a useful scaffold in medicinal chemistry for designing new photosensitizers. Developmental expression of the CD4 gene in mature T cells is controlled by at least four transcriptional control elements: a promoter, two enhancers and a silencer. In this report we use a transgenic approach to study the mechanisms in which these elements interact to convey appropriate tissue- and cell-specific expression at all stages of T cell development. Our data indicate that the control of CD4 gene expression requires the interaction of multiple elements functioning in different combinations at different stages of T cell development. Expression of the CD4 gene in immature CD4+CD8+ thymocytes requires a third enhancer element located in the 3' flanking region of the CD4 gene. Interestingly, the CD4 promoter and proximal/distal enhancers first begin to function at the HSAlo CD69lo H-2Khi CD4 single-positive stage; cells of this phenotype are believed to have survived positive selection. These data indicate that the CD4 promoter and late enhancer elements are induced by positive selection; thus, the final maturation process is an active event that requires the initiation of a novel program of gene expression. Objective: To evaluate the relation between chorioamnionitis and hypotension in very low birthweight infants. Methods: Retrospective cohort study in infants with a birth weight of <1500 g born between January 2002 and September 2004. The placentas were examined for evidence of chorioamnionitis and funisitis. Hypotension was defined by the use of vasopressors. Results: Of 105 infants, 37 (35%) were chorioamnionitis positive. The onset of hypotension had a skewed distribution: day 1 for 30 episodes and scattered from day 2 to day 19 for the remaining 22. Of the 30 infants who developed hypotension on day 1, 17 (57%) were chorioamnionitis positive. The mean maturity of the chorioamnionitis positive group was 27.91 weeks, marginally less than the mean maturity of 29.05 weeks of the chorioamnionitis negative group (p = 0.05). After adjustment of the effects for confounding variables (birth weight, gestation, surfactant therapy, mechanical ventilation on day 1, high frequency oscillatory ventilation, patent ductus arteriosus), chorioamnionitis was the significant factor in line with hypotension developing on day 1 (adjusted odds ratio 5.14, 95% confidence interval 1.51 to 17.50). There was no evidence that hypotension developing after day 1 was associated with chorioamnionitis. Introduction: The identification of effective, selective biomarkers and therapeutics is dependent on truly deep, comprehensive analysis of proteomes at the proteoform level. Methods: Bovine serum albumin (BSA) isolated by two different protocols, cold ethanol fractionation and heat shock fractionation, was resolved and identified using Integrative Top-down Proteomics, the tight coupling of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) with liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results and discussion: Numerous proteoforms were identified in both "purified" samples, across a broad range of isoelectric points and molecular weights. The data highlight several concerns regarding proteome analyses using currently popular analytical approaches and what it means to (i) purify a "protein" if the isolate consists of a wide variety of proteoforms and/or co-purifying species; and (ii) use these preparations as analytical standards or therapeutics. Failure to widely recognize and accept proteome complexity has likely delayed the identification of effective biomarkers and new, more selective drug targets. iTDP is the most logical available analytical technique to effectively provide the necessary critical depth and breadth for complex proteome analyses. Introduction: While randomized controlled trials remain the reference standard for evaluating treatment efficacy, there is an increased interest in the use of external control arms (ECA), namely in oncology, using real-world data (RWD). Challenges related to measurement of real-world oncology endpoints, like progression-free survival (PFS), are one factor limiting the use and acceptance of ECAs as comparators to trial populations. Differences in how and when disease assessments occur in the real-world may introduce measurement error and limit the comparability of real-world PFS (rwPFS) to trial progression-free survival. While measurement error is a known challenge when conducting an externally-controlled trial with real-world data, there is limited literature describing key contributing factors, particularly in the context of multiple myeloma (MM). Methods: We distinguish between biases attributed to how endpoints are derived or ascertained (misclassification bias) and when outcomes are observed or assessed (surveillance bias). We further describe how misclassification of progression events (i.e., false positives, false negatives) and irregular assessment frequencies in multiple myeloma RWD can contribute to these biases, respectively. We conduct a simulation study to illustrate how these biases may behave, both individually and together. Results: We observe in simulation that certain types of measurement error may have more substantial impacts on comparability between mismeasured median PFS (mPFS) and true mPFS than others. For instance, when the observed progression events are misclassified as either false positives or false negatives, mismeasured mPFS may be biased towards earlier (mPFS bias = −6.4 months) or later times (mPFS bias = 13 months), respectively. However, when events are correctly classified but assessment frequencies are irregular, mismeasured mPFS is more similar to the true mPFS (mPFS bias = 0.67 months). Discussion: When misclassified progression events and irregular assessment times occur simultaneously, they may generate bias that is greater than the sum of their parts. Improved understanding of endpoint measurement error and how resulting biases manifest in RWD is important to the robust construction of ECAs in oncology and beyond. Simulations that quantify the impact of measurement error can help when planning for ECA studies and can contextualize results in the presence of endpoint measurement differences. Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); however, high costs and limited availability restrict its use for routine screening. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the accuracy of overnight oximetry for the diagnosis of pediatric OSA. Studies evaluating overnight oximetry against PSG-derived apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in subjects aged ≤18 years were considered in the qualitative analysis and evaluated with the QUADAS-2 tool. Only oximetry parameters adopted by at least four studies using the currently accepted diagnostic thresholds for pediatric OSA (AHI of 1, 5 and 10 events/h) were included for quantitative analyses. A bivariate meta-analysis was used to estimate sensitivity and specificity, as well as to construct summary receiver operator characteristic curves. The positive and negative predictive values were calculated. A total of 28 studies (9122 participants) were included in qualitative analyses. Only 3% oxygen desaturation index (ODI3) was eligible for the quantitative analyses (six studies, 1276 participants). As OSA severity increases sensitivity, specificity and the negative predictive value also increase, reaching values of 79%, 84%, and 89% at AHI ≥ 10, respectively. Oximetry displays a good performance as a screening tool for pediatric OSA, especially with moderate-to-severe disease. ODI3 is particularly effective at ruling out OSA in children who test negative. In recent years, the incidence of cancer has been increasing year by year, and the burden of the disease and the economic burden caused by it has been worsening. Although chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and other therapeutic means continue to progress, they still inevitably have problems such as high toxicity and side effects, susceptibility to drug resistance, and high price. Photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy have demonstrated considerable advantages in cancer imaging and treatment due to their minimally invasive and selective nature. However, their development has been constrained by challenges related to drug delivery. In recent times, drug delivery systems constructed based on supramolecular chemistry have been the subject of considerable interest, particularly in view of their compatibility with the high permeability and long retention effect of tumors. Furthermore, the advantage of dissociating the active ingredient under pH, light and other stimuli makes them unique in cancer therapy. This paper reviews the current status of supramolecular nanomedicines in cancer therapy, elucidating the challenges faced and providing a theoretical basis for the efficient and precise treatment of malignant tumors. The power-to-gas (P2G) technology transforms the unidirectional coupling of power network and natural gas network into bidirectional coupling, and its operational characteristics provide an effective way for wind and solar energy accommodation. The paper proposes a bi-level optimal dispatch model for the integrated energy system with carbon capture system and P2G facility. The upper model is an optimal allocation model for coal-fired units, and the lower model is an economic dispatch model for the integrated energy system. Moreover, the upper model is solved by transforming the model into a mixed-integer linear programming problem and calling CPLEX, and the lower model is a multi-objective planning problem, which is solved by improving the small-habitat particle swarm algorithm. Finally, the simulation is validated by the MATLAB platform, and the results show that the simultaneous consideration of carbon capture system and P2G facility improves the economics of the integrated energy system and the capacity of wind and solar energy accommodation. The state of the environment and human behavior today contributes to a wide range of diseases that affect people. Medical professionals often find it challenging to detect disorders by themselves appropriately; it is crucial to recognize and anticipate them early on. This paper aims to detect and predict people with more widespread chronic illnesses. To prevent such diseases from worsening, this research proposes a new deep learning-based technique to predict chronic diseases. Initially, patient data will be collected using Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Then, the missing values from input data are eliminated, and categorical data encoding, outlier detection, and data transformation are performed in the pre-processing stage. After that, the necessary attributes are selected to optimize the performance by eliminating unnecessary features using Binary Grasshopper Whale Optimization Algorithm (BGWOA), which combines the benefits of the Binary Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (BGOA) and Binary Whale Optimization Algorithm (BWOA) algorithms. Then, the disease can be classified as chronic or not, utilizing a three-layer stacked bidirectional long short-term memory (TLSBLSTM) technique. The performance is evaluated on two chronic disease datasets that are publicly available. It successfully obtained good results by preparing the dataset on heart disease and comparing the findings using the most recent state-of-the-art approaches. According to the experimental findings, the proposed approach performs better in evaluating performance measures than the existing approaches. The observed accuracy of the proposed method is 99.87% and 99.84% for chronic kidney disease dataset and cardiovascular disease dataset, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Palm oil is a widely used agricultural crop in the world, and most of them are produced in Malaysia and Indonesia covering millions of hectares. However, climate change which induces water stress and extreme weather such as El Niño poses a risk to oil palm production. Therefore, it is crucial to identify areas vulnerable to climate change to prioritize adaptation actions for sustainable palm oil production. Several studies have implemented vulnerability assessments for climate change using a limited number of climate variables, despite the complex relationships among vegetation and various water components. Given these situations, this study aims to identify areas vulnerable to climate change for oil palms by analyzing the relationship between vegetation productivity and climate variables, and their changes from 2002 to 2012 and from 2013 to 2022. This analysis utilized satellite-based multiple water components and applied principal component analysis. The identified vulnerable areas were then compared with the biophysical suitability map from another study. Severe El Niño impacts from 2015 to 2016 were also assessed as an indicator of the actual decline in productivity. The results showed that more than half of the study area had experienced water stress recently, particularly in Java, southern Borneo, and the southern New Guinea islands. There was a discrepancy between the biophysical suitability map and the identified vulnerable areas in this study, especially in the southern part of Borneo. These findings highlighted the importance of considering multiple water components in tropical regions and future projections for appropriate palm oil cultivation areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Napier grass is crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by substituting non-renewable resources. When Napier grass is burned, the carbon dioxide (CO2) released is roughly equal to the amount absorbed during its growth, making it a potentially carbon-neutral energy source. This study investigates the impact of ratooning (repeated harvesting) on various aspects of Napier grass, including growth, physiology, biomass production, nutrient content, and chemical analysis. It also explored the interaction between elevated CO2 levels and ratooning. Two experiments were conducted over 12 months. Experiment 1 took place in an open field at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), with two treatments: no ratooning and ratooning at three months after planting (MAP). Experiment 2 was conducted in an open field at UPM and a greenhouse at Tenaga National Berhad Research, Kajang, Selangor. Eight combination treatments were studied: (T1) 1-month elevated CO2 (MECO2) - no ratooned, (T2) 1 MECO2-R at 3 MAP, (T3) 2 MECO2-noR, (T4) 2 MECO2-R at 3 MAP, (T5) 5 MECO2-noR, (T6) 5 MECO2-R at 3 MAP, (T7) 12 MECO2-noR, and (T8) 12 MECO2-R at 3 MAP. The results indicated that, in Experiment 1, no ratooning was more favourable for all parameters compared to ratooning. In Experiment 2, a 1-month exposure to elevated CO2 showed better results compared to longer exposure periods. In conclusion, Napier grass performed better when not subjected to ratooning and exposed to short-term elevated CO2 levels. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with the progressive loss of functional nephrons and hypertension (HTN). Clinical studies demonstrate calcium channel blocker (CCB) therapy mitigates the decline in renal function in humans with essential HTN. However, there are few long-term clinical studies that determine the impact of CCBs in patients with hypertensive CKD. African Americans (AA) have a higher prevalence of CKD and a faster progression to total kidney failure as compared to the white population but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Both clinical evidence (the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension, or AASK trial) and experimental studies have demonstrated that CCB may expose glomerular capillaries to high systemic pressures and exacerbate CKD progression. Therefore, using a large physiological model, we set out to replicate the AASK trial findings, predict renal hemodynamic responses and the role of the renin-angiotensin system during CCB antihypertensive therapy in a virtual population, and hypothesize mechanisms underlying those findings. Our current mathematical model, HumMod, is comprised of integrated systems that play an integral role in long-term blood pressure (BP) control such as neural, endocrine, circulatory, and renal systems. Parameters (n = 341) that control these systems were randomly varied and resulted in 1,400 unique models that we define as a virtual population. We calibrated these models to individual patient level data from the AASK trial: BP and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) before and after 3 years of amlodipine (10 mg/day). After calibration, the new virtual population (n = 165) was associated with statistically similar BP and GFR before and after CCB. Baseline factors such as elevated single nephron GFR and low tubuloglomerular feedback were correlated with greater declines in renal function and increased glomerulosclerosis after 3 years of CCB. Blocking the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the virtual population decreased glomerular pressure, limited glomerular damage, and further decreased BP (-14 ± 8 mmHg) as compared to CCB alone (-11 ± 9 mmHg). Our simulations echo the potential risk of CCB monotherapy in AA CKD patients and support blockade of the renin angiotensin system as a valuable tool in renal disease treatment when combined with CCB therapy. Background/Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the global prevalence of sleep bruxism and awake bruxism in pediatric and adult populations. Methods: This systematic review was conducted by analyzing studies published from 2003 to 2023. The following keyword combination was utilized: prevalence, epidemiology, population, and bruxism. The PubMed database was analyzed, supplemented by manual searches using the Google search. Additionally, the snowballing procedure method was applied. A double assessment of the quality of publications was carried out to preserve the highest possible quality of evidence (e.g., Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist). Analyses were conducted using the R statistical language. Results: The global bruxism (sleep and awake) prevalence is 22.22%. The global sleep bruxism prevalence is 21% and awake prevalence is 23%. The occurrence of sleep bruxism, based on polysomnography, was estimated at 43%. The highest prevalence of sleep bruxism was observed in North America at 31%, followed by South America at 23%, Europe at 21%, and Asia at 19%. The prevalence of awake bruxism was highest in South America at 30%, followed by Asia at 25% and Europe at 18%. Conclusions: One in four individuals may experience awake bruxism. Bruxism is a significant factor among women. It was observed that age is a significant factor for the occurrence of sleep bruxism in women. Among the limitations of the study is the lack of analysis of the prevalence of bruxism in Africa and Australia due to not collecting an adequate sample for analysis. In the past century, the key technologies that shaped societal and economic transformation were mechanical, electrical, and automation technologies. In the current century, there are strong trends indicating the prominence of artificial intelligence technology. Therefore, artificial intelligence technology has become more important for all countries. The success of countries in artificial intelligence technology is only possible with well-designed artificial intelligence policy tools. It is important to measure the level of technological advancement for the formulation of policies. However, efforts to measure the scientific and technological advancement of artificial intelligence technology are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to develop a framework to measure the scientific and technological progress of AI technology. The developed framework includes the number of publications and citations, the number of high-impact scientific journals, the number of patent applications, the number of universities ranked in the top thousand in the field of computer science, the number of international high-impact conferences, and the total number of researchers in higher education. Through these criteria, the level of scientific and technological progress of the countries has been analysed in detail. The findings clearly revealed the leading position of the USA in this field. China followed the USA. These two countries are clearly and positively differentiated from the other countries. Other countries with good performance are the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the number of cancer cases and deaths worldwide is predicted to nearly double by 2030, reaching 21.7 million cases and 13 million fatalities. The increase in cancer mortality is due to limitations in the diagnosis and treatment options that are currently available. The close relationship between diagnostics and medicine has made it possible for cancer patients to receive precise diagnoses and individualized care. This article discusses newly developed compounds with potential for photodynamic therapy and diagnostic applications, as well as those already in use.
