4. Impact of the anterior commissure involvement on the survival of early glottic cancer treated with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy: a retrospective study

However, the treatment of early glottic tumors with the involvement of the anterior commissure remains controversial. The studies about the role of anterior commissure involvement in oncologic outcomes in patients with early glottic cancer treated with supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL) are very few. For this reason, we conducted a retrospective study to evaluate local recurrence-free survival and specific survival in patients with and without involvement of the anterior commissure who underwent SCL with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy.Methods: This retrospective study has been carried out on patients with T1b–T2 glottic squamous cell carcinoma submitted to SCL with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy. The patients’ demographic and clinical data were collected, and the histological findings of the surgical specimens were reviewed to identify patients who had involvement of the anterior commissure.Results: A total of 72 patients were included in the study; two of them were female and 70 were male. The mean age at diagnosis was 61.5±8.0 SD years. In 26 of the 72 (36.2%) patients, anterior commissure was not pathologically involved (group A), while in 46 (63.8%) patients, it was involved (group B). The 5-year local recurrence-free survival rate was 96.1% and 93.48% in groups A and B, respectively, P=0.09. The 5-year disease-specific survival rate was 92.31% and 95.65% in groups A and B, respectively, P=0.057.Conclusion: SCL with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy seems to be an adequate treatment modality, even for T1b–T2 glottic tumors with anterior commissure involvement. 10. Polymyalgia rheumatica and cancer risk: the importance of the diagnostic set

In particular, in 2010, Ji et al examined the overall and specific cancer risks among Swedish subjects following hospitalization for PMR and giant cell arteritis and noted that the risk of cancer was highest in the first year after hospitalization (of 3941 total cancer diagnoses, 783 [19.1%] were in the first year). In 2013, Muller et al, using data from General Practice Research Database, highlighted that elderly patients with a PMR diagnosis were significantly more likely to receive a cancer diagnosis in the year after PMR diagnosis (313/667 cancer cases [69%]). In a series of 200 patients with PMR consecutively observed in our geriatric rheumatologic outpatient clinic from 2004 to 2014, we have observed 51 cancer cases; five of these were observed in the first year after diagnosis of PMR (percentage equal to 9.8%). In our article, we point out the importance of the diagnostic set. PMR is a disease that can be managed in a rheumatologic outpatient clinic without patients’ hospitalization. On the other hand, hospitalization of the elderly with PMR is useful when there are grounds for suspicion for a paraneoplastic syndrome, and this represents per se an important inclusion bias. The studies from institutional databases such as those of Ji et al and Muller et al have a very large series but diagnoses of the various diseases are based on coding and not always confirmed by individual medical record review. On the other hand, studies based on cohorts followed by single rheumatologic outpatient clinics can have much smaller data but have a higher diagnostic accuracy, because all patients are visited by rheumatologists and data are usually more accurate. The specificity of geriatric rheumatologic outpatient clinics with respect to elderly patients and to disease with an outpatient management (such as PMR) is often underestimated. In the health care organization of the geographic area that belongs to the hospital “Mariano Lauro”, the majority of patients for whom the general practitioner suspects a PMR are visited by a rheumatologist, as a consequence of an active collaboration between the general practitioner and the rheumatologist and thanks to the very short (5–7 days on average) waiting lists. In our cohort, diagnosis of PMR must be confirmed at least by a second rheumatologist. No change in the initial diagnosis was observed in any of our patients with PMR over the years and even after being examined by other colleagues from different centers. The repercussions of cancer risk in the elderly with PMR on health policies are easily understandable, and therefore the detection of all potential bias is mandatory. Abstract

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) following neoadjuvant treatment (NACT) has been questioned by many studies that reported heterogeneous identification (IR) and false negative rates (FNR). As a result, some patients receive axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) regardless of response to NACT, leading to a potential overtreatment. To better assess reliability and clinical significance of SLNB status on ycN0 patients, we retrospectively analyzed oncological outcomes of 399 patients treated between January 2016 and December 2019 that were either cN0-ycN0 (219 pa-tients) or cN1/2-ycN0 (180 patients). The Endpoints of our study were to assess, furthermore than IR: oncological outcomes as Overall Survival (OS); Distant Disease Free Survival (DDFS); and Regional Disease Free Survival (RDFS) according to SLNB status. SLN identification rate was 96.8% (98.2% in patients cN0-ycN0 and 95.2% in patients cN+-ycN0). A median number of three lymph nodes were identified and removed. Among cN0-ycN0 patients, 149 (68%) were confirmed ypN0(sn), whereas regarding cN1/2-ycN0 cases 86 (47.8%) confirmed an effective downstaging to ypN0. Three year OS, DDFS and RDFS were significantly related to SLNB positivity. Our data seemed to confirm SLNB feasibility following NACT in ycN0 patients, furthermore reinforcing its predictive role in a short observation timing.

Abstract

Oncoplastic surgery level II techniques (OPSII) are used in patients with operable breast cancer. There is no evidence regarding their safety and efficacy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). The aim of this study was to compare the oncological and aesthetic outcomes of this technique compared with those observed in mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (MIBR), in post-NAC patients undergoing surgery between January 2016 and March 2021. Local disease-free survival (L-DFS), regional disease-free survival (R-DFS), distant disease-free survival (D-DFS), and overall survival (OS) were compared; the aesthetic results and quality of life (QoL) were evaluated using BREAST-Q. A total of 297 patients were included, 87 of whom underwent OPSII and 210 of whom underwent MIBR. After a median follow-up of 39.5 months, local recurrence had occurred in 3 patients in the OPSII group (3.4%), and in 13 patients in the MIBR group (6.1%) (p = 0.408). The three-year L-DFS rates were 95.1% for OPSII and 96.2% for MIBR (p = 0.286). The three-year R-DFS rates were 100% and 96.4%, respectively (p = 0.559). The three-year D-DFS rate were 90.7% and 89.7% (p = 0.849). The three-year OS rates were 95.7% and 95% (p = 0.394). BREAST-Q highlighted significant advantages in physical well-being for OPSII. No difference was shown for satisfaction with breasts (p = 0.656) or psychosocial well-being (p = 0.444). OPSII is safe and effective after NAC. It allows oncological and aesthetic outcomes with a high QoL, and is a safe alternative for locally advanced tumors which are partial responders to NAC.

Abstract

Purpose: Proper evaluation of polyphenols intake at the population level is a necessary step in order to establish possible associations with health outcomes. Available data are limited, and so far no study has been performed in people with diabetes. The aim of this work was to document the intake of polyphenols and their major food sources in a cohort of people with type 2 diabetes and in socio-demographic subgroups. Methods: We studied 2573 men and women aged 50–75 years. Among others, anthropometry was measured by standard protocol and dietary habits were investigated by food frequency questionnaire (EPIC). The intake of polyphenols was evaluated using US Department of Agriculture and Phenol-Explorer databases. Results: The mean total polyphenol intake was 683.3 ± 5.8 mg/day. Non-alcoholic beverages represented the main food source of dietary polyphenols and provided 35.5% of total polyphenol intake, followed by fruits (23.0%), alcoholic beverages (14.0%), vegetables (12.4%), cereal products and tubers (4.6%), legumes (3.7%) and oils (2.1%); chocolate, cakes and nuts are negligible sources of polyphenols in this cohort. The two most important polyphenol classes contributing to the total intake were flavonoids (47.5%) and phenolic acids (47.4%). Polyphenol intake increased with age and education level and decreased with BMI; furthermore, in the northern regions of Italy, the polyphenol intake was slightly, but significantly higher than in the central or southern regions. Conclusions: The study documents for the first time the intake of polyphenols and their main food sources in people with diabetes using validated and complete databases of the polyphenol content of food. Compared with published data, collected in people without diabetes, these results suggest a lower intake and a different pattern of intake in people with diabetes.

24. Conservative surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with operable breast cancer

Abstract

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is being used with increasing frequency in the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with operable breast cancer. Although large clinical trials have shown no differences between the same systemic therapy given pre- or post-surgery on diseasefree and overall survival, neoadjuvant therapy may have several advantages. By downstaging of the tumor, chemotherapy can convert patients who are candidates for mastectomy to breast-conserving surgery candidates. Furthermore, it has potential to reduce excision volumes in patients with large cancer who are already candidates for breast conserving surgery improving cosmetic outcomes. Another surgical advantage is downstaging of the axilla so that lymph node dissection can be avoided in selected patients reducing surgical morbidity. Neoadjuvant therapy also allows to monitor response to therapy at an early stage; potentially allowing time and flexibility to switch therapies if patients do not respond. All early stage breast cancer patients identified as likely to require adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered for neoadjuvant therapy, as they may potentially benefit from treatment before surgery. Factors favouring neoadjuvant therapy in patients with operable breast cancer include: lymph node-positive disease; high tumor volume-to-breast ratio; specific biological features of primary cancer (high grade, hormone receptor-negative, HER2-positive, triple negative cancer); younger age. Patients with HER2-positive and triple negative cancers have the highest probability of achieving pathological complete response after neoadjuvant therapy making them good candidates for consideration. The two main goals of the surgeon when performing BCS after neaodiuvant chemotherapy are to obtain tumor-free margins and achieve a good cosmetic outcome by keeping the amount of healthy breast tissue excision as low as possible. Abstract

The article describes the somatic polymorphism in Crotalaria retusa L. seeds. Each individual may produce yellow dormant seeds, brown quiescent seeds and unviable dark brown ones. Therefore, regarding physiology it is a dimorphism. We show that autogamy reduces dimorphism, favoring the formation of dormant seeds. However, the significant variation in dimorphism is seasonal as consequence of increased viability of dormant seeds under drier weather conditions. The variation is a phenotypic response to changes of humidity in the environment during plant reproduction, a mechanism inducing the prevalence of dormant seeds in the dry season and quiescent seeds during the rainy season. The seasonal alternation between dormancy and quiescence in seasonally dry environments has an apparent adaptive value. The chromatic polymorphism increases on the more humid coast and during the rainy season, due to increased mortality of dormant seeds under wetter weather conditions. Unviable seeds accumulate oxidized phenols in their seed coat that possibly act as induced chemical defenses. Its proportion increases with humidity, accentuating polymorphism, also in response to the increase in the predation rate by larvae of U. ornatrix during the rainy season.

The primary causes of death in cases of laryngeal cancer are the recurrence of locoregional disease and distant metastasis. Anatomic and tissue alterations resulting from surgery and/or radiotherapy of primary laryngeal tumors can make it difficult to determine a locoregional recurrence or residual disease by physical examination or computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The majority of studies have shown a high accuracy in the detection of local and regional recurrence of head and neck cancer after different treatment modalities, using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)/CT.Aim: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of PET/CT in patients with suspicion of locoregional recurrence from laryngeal carcinoma after surgery with or without adjuvant radiotherapy.Materials and methods: This was a retrospective study. Forty-five patients who previously underwent surgical treatment with or without adjuvant radiotherapy for primary laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and who underwent examination using FDG-PET/CT imaging after clinical and instrumental (CT/MRI) suspicion of locoregional recurrence (T or N) were recruited.Results: Overall specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of PET/CT were found to be 88%, 100%, and 93.3%, respectively. With respect to the suspected cases of recurrence in the primary site, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of PET/CT were found to be 100%, 87.5%, and 91.6%, respectively. In patients with suspected metastatic neck disease, PET/CT revealed a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 100%, 90%, and 95.4%, respectively.Conclusion: According to the results of this study, PET/CT imaging in laryngeal tumors is a useful tool in case of suspected locoregional recurrence where conventional imaging (CT and MRI) is unable to resolve the diagnostic doubt. BACKGROUND: Muscarinic receptor 1 positive allosteric modulators (M1PAMs) enhance colonic propulsive contractions and defecation through the facilitation of M1 receptor (M1R)-mediated signaling. We examined M1R expression in the colons of 5 species and compared colonic propulsion and defecation caused by the M1PAM, T440, the 5-HT4 agonist, prucalopride, and the cholinesterase inhibitor, neostigmine, in rats and dogs. METHODS: M1R expression was profiled by immunostaining and in situ hybridization. In vivo studies utilized male SD rats and beagle dogs. Colonic propulsive contractions were recorded by manometry in anesthetized rats. Gut contractions in dogs were assessed using implanted force transducers in the ileum, proximal, mid, and distal colons. KEY RESULTS: M1R was localized to neurons of myenteric and submucosal plexuses and the epithelium of the human colon. A similar receptor localization was observed in rat, dog, mouse, and pig. T440 enhanced normal defecation in rats in a dose-dependent manner. Prucalopride also enhanced defecation in rats, but the maximum effect was half that of T440. Neostigmine and T440 were similarly effective in enhancing defecation, but the effective dose of neostigmine was close to its lethal dose. In rats, all 3 compounds induced colonic contractions, but the associated propulsion was strongest with T440. In dogs, intestinal contractions elicited by T440 propagated from ileum to distal colon. Prucalopride and neostigmine also induced intestinal contractions, but these were less well coordinated. No loss of effectiveness of T440 on defecation occurred after 5 days of repeated dosing. CONCLUSION AND INFERENCES: These results suggest that M1PAMs produce highly coordinated propagating contraction by actions on the enteric nervous system of the colon. 30. Investigation of nerve pathways mediating colorectal dysfunction in Parkinson's disease model produced by lesion of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction, including constipation, is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). The toxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6OHDA) produces the symptoms of PD, surprisingly including constipation, after it is injected into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB). However, the mechanisms involved in PD-associated constipation caused by central application of 6OHDA remain unknown. We investigated effects of 6OHDA lesioning of the MFB on motor performance and GI function. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were unilaterally injected with 6OHDA in the MFB. Colorectal propulsion was assessed by bead expulsion after 4 weeks and by recording colorectal contractions and propulsion after 5 weeks. Enteric nervous system (ENS) neuropathy was examined by immunohistochemistry. KEY RESULTS: When compared to shams, 6OHDA-lesioned rats had significantly increased times of bead expulsion from the colorectum, indicative of colon dysmotility. Administration of the colokinetic, capromorelin, that stimulates defecation centers in the spinal cord, increased the number of contractions and colorectal propulsion in both groups compared to baseline; however, the effectiveness of capromorelin in 6OHDA-lesioned rats was significantly reduced in comparison with shams, indicating that 6OHDA animals have reduced responsiveness of the spinal defecation centers. Enteric neuropathy was observed in the distal colon, revealing that lesion of the MFB has downstream effects at the cellular level, remote from the site of 6OHDA administration. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: We conclude that there are trans-synaptic effects of the proximal, forebrain, lesion of pathways from the brain that send signals down the spinal cord, at the levels of the defecation centers and the ENS.

Abstract

When electrochemical techniques are used to probe the surface of corroding magnesium with the aim of obtaining quantitative information on the corrosion process, two peculiarities are generally observed: i) with anodic polarization, the rate of hydrogen evolution increases instead of decreasing and ii) during electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, an inductive contribution is often observed at the low-frequency end of the spectra. The presence of these two phenomena clearly has an impact on the methodology that should be applied to correctly estimate corrosion rates from electrochemical data. The aim of this work is to provide a general mathematical description of the corroding magnesium surface that, under minimal a priori assumptions regarding the reaction kinetics, can account simultaneously for both superfluous hydrogen evolution and inductive response. The mathematical results are consistent with the suggestion that the superfluous hydrogen evolution is mainly related to the increase of the surface of the active corrosion front during anodic polarization. Further, the obtained results show that the inductive response is expected when, at the corrosion front, oxidation of magnesium proceeds faster than hydrogen evolution.

Abstract

The choice of the operational wavelength for a soft-x-ray projection lithography system affects a wide variety of system parameters such as optical design, sources, resists, and multilayer mirrors. Several system constraints limit the choice for the operational wavelength. In particular, optical imaging requirements place an upper limit and throughput issues place a lower limit on the wavelength selection. We have determined that there are several discrete wavelength regions between 10 and 25 nm that satisfy the system-imposed constraints of high resolution, large depth of focus, and high throughput.

Abstract

A molybdenum silicon multilayer is irradiated with 13.4-nm radiation to investigate changes in multilayer performance under simulated soft-x-ray projection lithography (SXPL) conditions. The wiggler-undulator at the Berlin electron storage ring BESSY is used as a quasi-monochromatic source of calculable spectral radiant intensity and is configured to simulate an incident SXPL x-ray spectrum. The test multilayer receives a radiant exposure of 240 J/mm squared in an exposure lasting 8.9 h. The corresponding average incident power density is 7.5 mW/mm squared. The absorbed dose of 7.8 X 10 to the tenth power J/kg (7.8 X 10 to the twelfth power rad) is equivalent to 1.2 times the dose that would be absorbed by a multilayer coating on the first imaging optic in a hypothetical SXPL system during 1 year of operation. Surface temperature increases do not exceed 2 degrees C during the exposure. Normal-incidence reflectance measurements at Lambda(sub 0) = 13.4 nm performed before radiation exposure are in agreement with measurements performed after the exposure, indicating that no significant damage had occurred.

Abstract

Background The best treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes in whom treatment with metformin alone fails to achieve adequate glycaemic control is debated. We aimed to compare the long-term effects of pioglitazone versus sulfonylureas, given in addition to metformin, on cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods TOSCA.IT was a multicentre, randomised, pragmatic clinical trial, in which patients aged 50–75 years with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin monotherapy (2–3 g per day) were recruited from 57 diabetes clinics in Italy. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1), by permuted blocks randomisation (block size 10), stratified by site and previous cardiovascular events, to add-on pioglitazone (15–45 mg) or a sulfonylurea (5–15 mg glibenclamide, 2–6 mg glimepiride, or 30–120 mg gliclazide, in accordance with local practice). The trial was unblinded, but event adjudicators were unaware of treatment assignment. The primary outcome, assessed with a Cox proportional-hazards model, was a composite of first occurrence of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or urgent coronary revascularisation, assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population (all randomly assigned participants with baseline data available and without any protocol violations in relation to inclusion or exclusion criteria). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00700856. Findings Between Sept 18, 2008, and Jan 15, 2014, 3028 patients were randomly assigned and included in the analyses. 1535 were assigned to pioglitazone and 1493 to sulfonylureas (glibenclamide 24 [2%], glimepiride 723 [48%], gliclazide 745 [50%]). At baseline, 335 (11%) participants had a previous cardiovascular event. The study was stopped early on the basis of a futility analysis after a median follow-up of 57·3 months. Abstract

Aims Insulin pump failure and/or malfunction requiring replacement have not been thoroughly investigated. This study evaluated pump replacement in children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes using insulin pump therapy. Methods Data were collected for all participants younger than 19 years, starting insulin pump therapy before 31 December 2013. For each child, age, disease duration, date of insulin pump therapy initiation, insulin pump model, failure/malfunction/replacement yes/no and reason were considered for the year 2013. Results Data were returned by 40 of 43 paediatric centres belonging to the Diabetes Study Group of the Italian Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology. In total, 1574 of 11 311 (13.9%) children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes were using an insulin pump: 29.2% Animas VIBE™, 9.4% Medtronic MiniMed 715/515™, 34.3% Medtronic MiniMed VEO™, 24.3% Accu-Check Spirit Combo™ and 2.8% other models. In 2013, 0.165 insulin pump replacements per patient-year (11.8% due to pump failure/malfunction and 4.7% due to accidental damage) were recorded. Animas VIBE™ (22.1%) and Medtronic MiniMed VEO™ (17.7%) were the most replaced. Conclusions In a large cohort of Italian children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes, insulin pump failure/malfunction and consequent replacement are aligned with rates previously reported and higher in more sophisticated pump models. Abstract

Chronic stress is a known suppressor of female reproductive function. However, attempts to isolate single causal links between stress and reproductive dysfunction have not yet been successful due to their multi-faceted aetiologies. The gut-derived hormone ghrelin regulates stress and reproductive function and may therefore be pivotal in the neuroendocrine integration of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) and –gonadal (HPG) axes. Here, we hypothesised that chronic stress disrupts ovarian follicle maturation and that this effect is mediated by a stress-induced increase in acyl ghrelin and activation of the growth hormone secretatogue receptor (GHSR). We gave C57BL/6J female mice 30 min daily chronic predator stress for 4 weeks, or no stress, and gave them daily GHSR antagonist (d-Lys3-GHRP-6) or saline. Exposure to chronic predator stress reduced circulating corticosterone, elevated acyl ghrelin levels and led to significantly depleted primordial follicle numbers. GHSR antagonism stress-dependently altered the expression of genes regulating ovarian responsiveness to gonadotropins and was able to attenuate the stress-induced depletion of primordial follicles. These findings suggest that chronic stress-induced elevations of acyl ghrelin may be detrimental for ovarian follicle maturation.

Abstract

The achievement on the biological behaviour and natural history of breast cancer demonstrates the same effectiveness and oncological safety of breast conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy than mastectomy. The goal of BCS for patients with early-stage breast cancer is the complete removal of the tumor keeping sufficient surgical margins and maintaining at the same time the natural shape and appearance of the breast. In particular oncoplastic surgery (OPS) is a hybrid approach that combines oncologic principles and plastic surgical technique in order to ensure oncologically safe resection and satisfying cosmetic results. Oncoplastic breast surgeons need to become familiar with main techniques: volume displacement techniques and volume replacement techniques. Based on our experience and reviewing existent literature we described different oncoplastic techniques with specific indications and contraindications in order to standardized them. We also focused our attention on outcomes of OPS. Nowadays, it's not acceptable in the surgical management of breast cancer not taking care of oncological and cosmetic needs of individual patients. Oncoplastic preserving surgery is oncologically safe and allows to excise the tumor with negative margins without compromising aesthetic outcome. Oncoplastic breast surgery can be applied in larger tumors, resulting in comparable postoperative complications, resection margins and re-excision rates compared to standard lumpectomy. The excitement related to this procedure comes from reported data that seem to demonstrate a higher oncological safety and better cosmetic efficacy.

Abstract

We present the geochemical composition and the stable isotope signature (18O/16O and 2H/1H) of waters sampled from six lakes (Caldonazzo, Levico, Lases, Santa Colomba, Lamar and Santo) located in the Province of Trento. The chemical compositions invariably revealed a HCO3-Ca hydrochemical facies; however slight differences were observed among the lakes, in relation to the lithologies distinguishing each lakes’drainage basin. Elemental ratios and in particular the Rb/Sr provide a discriminative tool to recognize the rocks that have been weathered; for example this ratio is high in water that interacted with volcanic ignimbrites (rhyolites), and low in rocks that interacted with carbonate rocks. Many other trace elements were analyzed, thus providing baseline data, and only arsenic displayed concentrations higher than the legislative threshold defined for drinking water (10mg/l), especially in Lake Levico (10-19 mg/l). As concerns the stable isotopes δD and δ18O, the obtained results approach the meteoric signature for waters sampled during the 2012 winter season. The waters sampled during two summers (2011 and 2012) displayed distinctive trends, reflecting the significant influence of evaporative processes. We emphasize that the annual differences recorded in the isotopic composition of distinct years are plausibly related to temperature changes and type of precipitation that recharged the lakes. In this light, the peculiar isotopic signature recorded in the year 2011 is possibly related to a significant snowy period, which greatly contributed to the lakes’ water budget. Abstract

In this work, an experimental and modelling analysis of Toluene/Naphthalene adsorption from water solution on a commercial activated carbon both in single and binary systems was carried out. All the experimental tests were conducted at constant pH=7 and temperature (20 °C). Experimental results indicate that Toluene has the highest adsorption capacity in single compound systems and competitive effects arise when the two analytes are adsorbed simultaneously. Abstract

The Mediterranean freshwater ichthyofauna includes many interesting but poorly known species, because of little interest for sport fishing and culinary purposes. Salaria fluviatilis is the most widespread freshwater blenny of the Mediterranean. This species is found in rivers, brooks and low altitude lakes rich in branches and with stone bottom. Average lifespan is up to 5 years; larvae are planktonic until the size of about 1.5 cm and live in quiet waters. They reach a size of 12 cm on average and males are larger than females, and have a small ridge on the head. S. fluviatilis feeds on benthic organisms like small snails and shrimps, on fish and all kinds of insect larvae; it is itself prey of birds (migratory and resident), tortoise (e.g. Emys orbicularis) and snakes (e.g. Natrix spp). The population is very fragmented, and few data are available due to the difficulties to catch or to observe this fish; consequently, it is difficult to know its conservation status. It is included in Annex III of the Bern Convention and is considered a locally endangered species, listed by the IUCN Red List. The species is included in the overall plan of action for the conservation of freshwater Italian fishes. In South Italy, the main threat factors are water pollution, habitat destruction (gravel extraction, damming, canalization of rivers, etc.) and introduction of non-native predatory fish species like catfish (Ameiurus melas), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), of two allochthonous decapod crustaceans (Procambarus clarkii and Orconectes limosus) and two Testudines (Trachemys spp.). Due to their important ecological and trophic role of connection between benthic invertebrates, migratory birds and reptiles, we started a monitoring scientific program, capture of breeding animals, setting up of dedicated mesocosms and reproduction as well as rearing of juveniles for, local or in larger scale, restocking purpose allowed by the low genetic divergence of the species.
