The non-predictable BTcP (NP-BTcP) subtype occurs in the absence of any specific activity. Evidence showed that gender differences exist in pain response sensitivity and clinical pain risk. This analysis aimed to signify the gender differences for the NP-BTcP phenomenon.Patients and Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the Italian Oncologic Pain multiSetting-Multicentric Survey (IOPS-MS), the largest study on BTcP. The subset of NP-BTcP cases for non-gender-specific cancer was considered. Univariable and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify gender differences for the NP-BTcP profile about its intensity, number of episodes per day, and type. A metastatic status-stratified analysis was performed to compare gender with the main clinical variables among the population with NP-BTcP.Results: Males exhibited a higher occurrence of BTcP in the thorax region compared to females (15% vs 11%, respectively, p = 0.03). Males also had a higher onset of BTcP, a higher BTcP therapy dosage (33% vs 28%, p = 0.04, mean: 201 vs 186, p = 0.02) and a lower Karnofsky score (mean: 46.9 vs 49.2, p = 0.03) compared to females. Similar gender differences were found for metastatic patients in the BTcP site (14% vs 8.5%, respectively; p = 0.01), peak onset (33% vs 27%, p = 0.02), BTcP therapy dosage (199 vs 185, p=0.04), and Karnofsky score (mean 47.5 vs 50.4, p = 0.009). Phenotype 2 was more characterized by non-metastatic males (41% vs 23%, p = 0.020) while non-metastatic females presence was predominant among others.Conclusion: In this study, gender differences according to site, onset and dosage of BTcP were found. The phenotype characterization of BTcP needs to be further investigated for a possible useful function in the management of cancer-related pain in non-metastatic patients.Keywords: non-predictable breakthrough cancer pain, gender cancer pain, cluster analysis

Abstract Strongly correlated electron materials are often characterized by competition and interplay of multiple quantum states. For example, in high-temperature cuprate superconductors unconventional superconductivity, spin- and charge-density wave orders coexist. A key question is whether competing states coexist on the atomic scale or if they segregate into distinct regions. Using X-ray diffraction, we investigate the competition between charge order and superconductivity in the archetypal cuprate La2−x BaxCuO4, around x = 1/8-doping, where uniaxial stress restores optimal 3D superconductivity at σ 3D ≈ 0.06 GPa. We find that the charge order peaks and the correlation length along the stripe are strongly reduced up to σ 3D. Upon the increase of stress beyond this point, no further changes were observed. Simultaneously, the charge order onset temperature only shows a modest decrease. Our findings suggest that optimal 3D superconductivity is not linked to the absence of charge stripes but instead requires their arrangement into smaller regions. Our results provide insight into the length scales over which the interplay between superconductivity and charge order takes place.

The article presents a practical method that combines low-cost camera systems with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to accomplish a comprehensive but economically feasible underwater survey of large hydropower infrastructures. Typically, inspecting reservoirs entails draining them off to allow for visual inspections, which are time-intensive, pose risks to operators' safety and are associated with generation losses. In this regard, ROVs are a much safer and more efficient alternative to traditional methods. The study was conducted at the Pack reservoir in Austria, where a reference framework was set up using terrestrial laser scanning and checkerboard markings for the above-water components. A ROV equipped with a GoPro camera and lighting system for the underwater recordings has been employed. Via a close-range photogrammetric approach, it was possible to generate 3D point clouds of the submerged infrastructure with a survey-grade accuracy level. Various strategies were explored to perform bundle block adjustment (BBA), among these were strategies where ground control points (GCPs) were used, strategies without the use of GCPs but pre-calibrated initial camera parameters and strategies with a combination of using both GCPs and pre-calibrated camera parameters in the BBA. The deployment of an inspection technique using low-cost sensors that can generate highly detailed three-dimensional models of submerged infrastructure areas is presented and discussed, allowing easy detection and localization for maintenance inspection, all while being cost-effective. The paper strengthens the suggestion of best practices that optimize camera settings, considering the effect of electronic image stabilization, suggesting its avoidance, and using advanced calibration methods.

Photogrammetry is a valuable tool for 3D documentation, mapping, and monitoring of underwater environments. However, the ground control surveys necessary for georeferencing and validation of the reconstructed bathymetry are difficult and time consuming to perform underwater, and thus impractical to scale to larger areas. Underwater direct georeferencing, using a differential GNSS receiver synchronized with an underwater camera system, offers an attractive alternative to surveying underwater ground control points in conditions when the seafloor is clearly visible from the surface. In this paper, the design of an underwater direct georeferencing system using mostly commercial off the shelf components is presented. The accuracy of the system is evaluated against geodetic survey based on trilateration and leveling, as well as by RTK (real time kinematic) positioning using a tilt-compensated GNSS receiver mounted on an extended pole to allow measurements of points in up to 7 m in water depth. Tests were conducted in a controlled outdoor pool setting with depths from 1–3 m, as well as in a 10 m × 10 m test plot established on the seafloor in a near-shore environment by Catalina Island, California at depths from 4–10 m. Comparing the geometry of the photogrammetric reconstruction with the geodetic survey yielded sub centimeter consistency, and 1 mm accuracy in length measurement was achieved when compared with calibrated 0.5 m scale bars. Through repeated surveys of the same area, repeatability of georeferencing is demonstrated within expectations for differential GNSS positioning, with horizontal errors at sub centimeter level, and vertical errors of up to 3 cm in the worst cases. These tests demonstrate the benefits of the underwater direct georeferencing approach in shallow waters, which can be scaled up much more easily than measuring underwater ground control points with traditional approaches, making this an ideal option for collecting accurate bathymetry of the seafloor over large coastal areas with clear waters.

Three-dimensional reference points (RPs) are fundamental for datum definition and metric validation in many photogrammetric applications, often used as ground control points (GCPs) to constrain the bundle adjustment solution. Nevertheless, survey operations underwater present challenges due to the physical characteristics of the water itself and the technological limitations of available instruments. Traditional methods to collect RPs underwater rely on direct geodetic measurements like slope distances, height differences, and depths from a dive computer. These methods can be time-consuming and impractical to scale up to large areas, particularly in deeper waters. This paper reports on the use of a custom-developed low-cost pressure sensor to measure depths and height differences of underwater RPs with survey-grade accuracy. Laboratory and open water tests demonstrated the method's potential, achieving an RMSEZ of less than 1 mm over a 1.5 m height range in the laboratory in static water and a sub-centimetre RMSE of relative depth differences in shallow water tests carried out in two different locations at sea with maximum significant wave height of 9 cm. The sensor proved its effectiveness also for constraining a corridor-like underwater photogrammetric survey reducing the bending of the 3D model with respect to the free network solution (RMSEZ lowered from 10 cm to less than 1 cm). The preliminary tests with the presented approach proved several advantages against other consolidated methods, including cost reduction (compared to commercial survey instruments), rapidity, safety, and accuracy, especially at depths greater than 3–5 m where other approaches (e.g., GNSS or topographic measures) cannot be applied.

Underwater photogrammetry presents unique challenges due to the optical properties of water that, if not correctly taken into account, might affect the quality of the survey and the related 2D and 3D products. It is recognized nowadays the importance to train newcomers to underwater surveying, and extend and consolidate the knowledge of best practices for underwater data acquisition. Starting from this consideration, we propose the development of POSER, a 3D simulation framework designed to facilitate the teaching of underwater imaging principles. The project, an ISPRS Educational and Capacity Building Initiative, is built upon the open-source platform Blender, incorporating realistic modelling of the physical properties of water, including light refraction, scattering, and absorption phenomena, to simulate underwater surveying conditions. We foster a learning-by-doing approach, providing users with ready-to-use application scenarios inspired by real-life case studies. They will cover a range of application fields, from marine ecology to archaeology and subsea metrology, and allow users to address the complexities of underwater surveying practices. This paper introduces POSER to the community, presenting its educational vocation and describing its constituent components.

Benchmark datasets have become increasingly widespread in the scientific community as a method of comparison, validation, and improvement of theories and techniques thanks to more affordable means for sharing. While this especially holds for test sites and data collected above the water, publicly accessible benchmark activities for geospatial analyses in the underwater environment are not very common. Applying geomatic techniques underwater is challenging and expensive, especially when dealing with deep water and offshore operations. Moreover, benchmarking requires ground truth data for which, in water, several open issues exist concerning geometry and radiometry. Recognizing this scientific and technological challenge, the NAUTILUS (uNder And throUgh waTer datasets for geospatIaL stUdieS) project aims to create guidelines for new multi-sensor/cross-modality benchmark datasets. The project focuses on (i) surveying the actual needs and gaps in through and under-the-water geospatial applications through a questionnaire and interviews, (ii) launching a unique publicly available database collecting already existing datasets scattered across the web and literature, (iii) designing and identifying proper test site(s) and methodologies to deliver to the extended underwater community a brand-new multi-sensor/cross-modality benchmark dataset. The project outputs are available to researchers and practitioners in underwater measurements-related domains, as they can now access a comprehensive tool providing a synthesis of open questions and data already available. In doing so, past research efforts to collect and publish datasets have received additional credit and visibility.

Underwater photogrammetry is often hampered by chromatic aberration, leading to degraded 2D and 3D products. This study investigates the effectiveness of various color enhancement methods in addressing these challenges.Theoretical considerations indicate that light penetration depth varies inversely with wavelength, causing underwater images to exhibit a blue or green cast with increasing depth. Color enhancement techniques can restore natural colors by compensating for this spectral attenuation. Additionally, scattering, caused by light reflected by particles in the water, can introduce haze into underwater images. Color enhancement can mitigate scatter and improve image clarity. In this contribution, to quantitatively evaluate color enhancement methods, we compare original images with images processed using gray-world assumption methods and physical methods that account for the physical properties of light underwater. Using artificial intelligence (AI) for underwater image color enhancement, a data-driven approach was also employed. These methods were applied to a case study concerning a Roman Navis Lapidaria shipwreck carrying five monumental cipollino marble columns at a depth of 4.5 meters in the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area (Italy). These methods were compared quantitatively and qualitatively, and the results are presented and discussed.

In the framework of mapping underwater environments, Posidonia Oceanica (PO) is a fundamental indicator for environmental monitoring and related studies and analyses for climate change. The POSEIDON project aims to study, develop and test new methodologies to provide knowledge, as well as ultra-high-resolution (UHR) and beyond ultra-high-resolution (BUHR) mapping and monitoring data for the conservation of the PO and related meadows and banquettes in the Mediterranean area. The project is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and stems from the recommendation of international organizations (European Environmental Directives, Mediterranean PO Network, International Partnership for Blue Carbon, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO in the Save the Wave project). Starting from new integrated survey methods and legacy data, the PO, ichthyofauna and seagrass banquettes will be mapped to understand their evolution and extract indicators and useful trends. Furthermore, the produced information will be stored and shared in a webGIS and a dedicated app to prevent unexpected damages during sailing or other activities. POSEIDON will use imaging sensors (RGB and multi/hyperspectral cameras) to extract information. With specific lighting equipment for significant water depths, these sensors will be conducted (by scuba divers or Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) next to the object to acquire BUHR data. Finally, to monitor the fauna (fish, other species, invertebrates), terrestrial and underwater videogrammetry will be applied using mono and stereo-cameras with object detection algorithms.

Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in the gut microbiome (GM) play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of pediatric food allergy (FA). This scoping review analyzes the current evidence on GM features associated with pediatric FAs and highlights the importance of the GM as a potential target of intervention for preventing and treating this common condition in the pediatric age. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, we searched PubMed and Embase using the keywords (gut microbiome OR dysbiosis OR gut microbiota OR microbiome signatures) AND (food allergy OR IgE-mediated food allergy OR food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis OR food protein-induced enterocolitis OR non-IgE food allergy OR cow milk allergy OR hen egg allergy OR peanut allergy OR fish allergy OR shellfish allergy OR tree nut allergy OR soy allergy OR wheat allergy OR rice allergy OR food sensitization). We included 34 studies reporting alterations in the GM in children affected by FA compared with healthy controls. The GM in pediatric FAs is characterized by a higher abundance of harmful microorganisms (e.g., Enterobacteriaceae, Clostridium sensu stricto, Ruminococcus gnavus, and Blautia spp.) and lower abundance of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Bifidobacteriaceae, Lactobacillaceae, some Bacteroides species). Moreover, we provide an overview of the mechanisms of action elicited by these bacterial species in regulating immune tolerance and of the main environmental factors that can modulate the composition and function of the GM in early life. Altogether, these data improve our knowledge of the pathogenesis of FA and can open the way to innovative diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic strategies for managing these conditions.

Background: Updated epidemiologic data are important for defining effective public health strategies for pediatric food allergy (FA). Objective: The Epidemiology of Paediatric Italian Food Allergy (EPIFA) study was designed to investigate the epidemiology of pediatric FA in one of the most heavily populated Italian regions. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed in collaboration with family pediatricians aimed at investigating the epidemiology of Italian pediatric FA during 2009 to 2021. Family pediatricians in the Campania region were invited to use the Google Forms platform for online compilation of data forms. Data forms were reviewed by experienced pediatric allergists at the coordinating center. Results: A total population of 105,151 subjects (aged 0-14 years) was screened during the study period. Data from 752 FA patients were evaluated. A progressive increase in FA incidence and prevalence was observed from 2009 to 2021, with a relative increase up to 34% and 113.6%, respectively, at the end of study period. The relative increase in FA prevalence was higher in the 0-3-year-old age group in the same study period (+120.8%). The most frequent allergens were cow’s milk, hen’s egg, and nuts. Conclusion: The results of the EPIFA study showed an increase in pediatric FA incidence and prevalence from 2009 to 2021 in Italy. These results underline the necessity of new effective strategies for preventing and managing these conditions.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus, is one of the most widespread zoonoses in Mediterranean countries. Baiting not-owned dogs with praziquantel (PZQ), due to their key role in the maintaining the transmission of CE, currently appears to be the most effective way to limit the transmission of CE, as well as an important aspect to introduce for the control of this parasitic disease. Therefore, this study aims to test 3 types of PZQ-based baits by evaluating different parameters (integrity over time, attractiveness and palatability for dogs, and mechanical resistance after release to different altitudes) and the bait acceptance in field by target animals, i.e. not-owned dogs, by using camera traps. The double PZQ-laced baits (with a double layer of highly palatable chews) showed the greatest resistance in the environment while also preserving the attractiveness and palatability up to 10 days, also withstood heights of 25 m, thus resulting as the most suitable also for drone delivery. The results on the field showed that most of the baits were consumed by not-owned dogs (82.2%), while the remaining were consumed by wild boars (8.9%), foxes (6.7%), badgers (1.1%) and hedgehogs (1.1%), confirming the specific and high attractiveness of the double PZQ-laced baits for the target population and highlights how an anthelmintic baiting programme may be a viable tool for the management of E. granulosus among free-ranging dog populations in endemic rural areas.

Abstract Background Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a zoonotic parasitic disease of economic and public health importance worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean area. Canids are the main definitive hosts of the adult cestode contaminating the environment with parasite eggs released with feces. In rural and peri-urban areas, the risk of transmission to livestock as well as humans is high because of the free-roaming behavior of owned/not owned dogs. Collecting data on animal movements and behavior using GPS dataloggers could be a milestone to contain the spread of this parasitosis. Thus, this study aims to develop a comprehensive control strategy, focused on deworming a dog population in a pilot area of southern Italy (Campania region) highly endemic for CE. Methods Accordingly, five sheep farms, tested to be positive for CE, were selected. In each sheep farm, all shepherd dogs present were treated every 2 months with praziquantel. Furthermore, 15 GPS dataloggers were applied to sheep and dogs, and their movements were tracked for 1 month; the distances that they traveled and their respective home ranges were determined using minimum convex polygon (MCP) analysis with a convex hull geometry as output. Results The results showed that the mean daily walking distances traveled by sheep and dogs did not significantly differ. Over 90% of the point locations collected by GPS fell within 1500 mt of the farm, and the longest distances were traveled between 10:00 and 17:00. In all the sheep farms monitored, the area traversed by the animals during their daily activities showed an extension of < 250 hectares. Based on the home range of the animals, the area with the highest risk of access from canids (minimum safe convex polygon) was estimated around the centroid of each farm, and a potential scheme for the delivery of praziquantel-laced baits for the treatment of not owned dogs gravitating around the grazing area was designed. Conclusions This study documents the usefulness of geospatial technology in supporting parasite control strategies to reduce disease transmission. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Obesity and metabolic disorders have been associated with poor outcomes in non-Mediterranean breast cancer (BC) patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic potential of anthropometric variables in patients with early BC living in Southern Mediterranean region of Italy. We enrolled 955 consecutive early BC patients treated in hospitals in Naples between 2009 and 2013 (median follow-up 11.8-year ending 15/09/2022). Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) were collected. All-cause and BC-specific mortality were calculated. At the last day of contact 208 (22%) patients had died, 131 (14%) from BC. High WC (≥ 88 cm) or WHR (> 0.85) and the MetS were significantly associated with moderately increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR=1.39, 1.62, 1.61, respectively). A significant increased risk of BC-specific mortality was found in obese patients, in those with high WC, high WHR and those with MetS (HR=1.72, 1.71, 1.80, 1.81, respectively). Central obesity significantly increased total and BC-specific mortality particularly in pre-menopausal women and in luminal subtypes, while in post-menopause MetS was a stronger risk factor. Obesity and MetS may impair the effectiveness of BC therapies hence active lifestyle interventions are encouraged.

Abstract β2‐microglobulin (β2‐m) is a plasma protein derived from physiological shedding of the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHCI), causing human systemic amyloidosis either due to persistently high concentrations of the wild‐type (WT) protein in hemodialyzed patients, or in presence of mutations, such as D76N β2‐m, which favor protein deposition in the adulthood, despite normal plasma levels. Here we describe a new transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) strain expressing human WT β2‐m at high concentrations, mimicking the condition that underlies dialysis‐related amyloidosis (DRA) and we compare it to a previously established strain expressing the highly amyloidogenic D76N β2‐m at lower concentrations. Both strains exhibit behavioral defects, the severity of which correlates with β2‐m levels rather than with the presence of mutations, being more pronounced in WT β2‐m worms. β2‐m expression also has a deep impact on the nematodes' proteomic and metabolic profiles. Most significantly affected processes include protein degradation and stress response, amino acids metabolism, and bioenergetics. Molecular alterations are more pronounced in worms expressing WT β2‐m at high concentration compared to D76N β2‐m worms. Altogether, these data show that β2‐m is a proteotoxic protein in vivo also in its wild‐type form, and that concentration plays a key role in modulating pathogenicity. Our transgenic nematodes recapitulate the distinctive features subtending DRA compared to hereditary β2‐m amyloidosis (high levels of non‐mutated β2‐m vs. normal levels of variant β2‐m) and provide important clues on the molecular bases of these human diseases.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and food neophobia present significant challenges in pediatric healthcare, particularly among children with food allergies (FAs). These eating disorders, characterized by the persistent avoidance or restriction of food, can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies and psychosocial impairments. The presence of FAs further complicates these eating behaviors, as the fear of allergic reactions exacerbates avoidance and restrictive patterns. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on ARFID and food neophobia, focusing on their definitions, characteristics, and the unique challenges they present in the context of FAs. The review explores the critical role of healthcare professionals, especially nurses, in integrating psychological and clinical care to improve outcomes for affected children. A multidisciplinary approach, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Family-Based Therapy (FBT), is emphasized as essential in addressing the complex needs of these patients. The review also highlights the need for standardized treatment protocols and further research on the long-term outcomes of these disorders, aiming to enhance therapeutic strategies and family support systems. Effective management of ARFID and food neophobia in the context of FAs requires a holistic and integrated approach to mitigate the profound impacts on a child’s growth, development, and overall well-being.

Abstract Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are promising candidates for next‐generation photovoltaic materials. However, there is a debate regarding the impact of interactions between the organic center and the surrounding inorganic cage on the solar cell's high diffusion lengths. It remains unclear whether the diffusion mechanism is consistent across various halide perovskite families and how light illumination affects carrier lifetimes. The focus is on ion kinetics of (CH3NH3)PbX3 (X = Br, Cl) perovskite halide single crystals. Muon spectroscopy (μ+SR)is employed to investigate the fluctuations and diffusion of ions via the relaxation of muon spins in local nuclear field environments. Within a temperature range of 30–340 K, ion kinetics are studied with and without white‐light illumination. The results show a temperature shift of the tetragonal‐orthorhombic phase transition on the illuminated samples, as an effect of increased organic molecule fluctuations. This relation is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations along the reduction of the nuclear field distribution width between the phase transitions. The analysis shows that, depending on the halide ion, the motional narrowing from H and N nuclear moments represents the molecular fluctuations. The results demonstrate the importance of the halide ion and the effect of illumination on the compound's structural stability and electronic properties.

Summary: The synthesis of metallic plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) faces challenges in stability and reproducibility, especially with silver. Here, we present a protocol for tunable synthesis of spherical silver NPs (AgNPs) with stable optical properties. We describe steps for preparing solutions, morphological characterization of AgNPs by transmission electron microscopy, and testing stability. AgNPs exhibit enduring stability and compatibility with various pH values. Moreover, they can be functionalized for optical biosensing applications, offering versatility in nanomaterial applications. : Publisher’s note: Undertaking any experimental protocol requires adherence to local institutional guidelines for laboratory safety and ethics.

Abstract LiCrSe2 constitutes a recent valuable addition to the ensemble of two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the low temperature nuclear and magnetic structure established in this material. Being subject to a strong magnetoelastic coupling, LiCrSe2 was found to undergo a first order structural transition from a trigonal crystal system ( $$P\bar{3}m1$$ P 3 ¯ m 1 ) to a monoclinic one (C2/m) at T s = 30 K. Such restructuring of the lattice is accompanied by a magnetic transition at T N = 30 K. Refinement of the magnetic structure with neutron diffraction data and complementary muon spin rotation analysis reveal the presence of a complex incommensurate magnetic structure with a up-up-down-down arrangement of the chromium moments with ferromagnetic double chains coupled antiferromagnetically. The spin axial vector is also modulated both in direction and modulus, resulting in a spin density wave-like order with periodic suppression of the chromium moment along the chains. This behavior is believed to appear as a result of strong competition between direct exchange antiferromagnetic and superexchange ferromagnetic couplings established between both nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor Cr3+ ions. We finally conjecture that the resulting magnetic order is stabilized via subtle vacancy/charge order within the lithium layers, potentially causing a mix of two co-existing magnetic phases within the sample.

Parasites and parasitologists have always lived together in good and bad luck in a sort of forced marriage. In recent times bad luck certainly prevailed, because of increasing man-made emergencies such as wars, chemical disasters, but also because of natural disasters, amplified by climate change, that condition more and more parasite–host equilibrium. The symposium at the National Congress of the Italian Society for Parasitology, was a first occasion for Italian parasitologists to reason about ‘disaster parasitology’ and researchers’ responsibilities. Extreme weather events and their impacts on parasites’ epidemiology are illustrated, comparing disasters that recently occurred in Italy with literature data. In particular, the Sardinian Island was hit subsequently by fires and floods exacerbating the effects on ecosystems and parasite–host-relationships. Examples of Cryptosporidium outbreaks in man and Fasciola hepatica infections in various hosts after heavy rains are reviewed and effects of droughts on pasture borne parasites, such as gastro-intestinal nematodes of ruminants are discussed. Heavy rains may also cause dissemination of toxic substances released accidentally from chemical plants as happened e.g. in Milan province (IT) after the dioxin hazard. The overlapping effects of strictly man-made disasters with climate change dependent extreme weather events is further challenging the understanding of what are the consequences of disasters on ecosystems and parasite epidemiology.

Abstract The quasi-2D platinum-based rare earth intermetallic LaPt2Si2 has attracted attention as it exhibits strong interplay between charge density wave order and superconductivity. However, most of the results reported on this material come from theoretical calculations, preliminary bulk investigations and powder samples, which makes it difficult to uniquely determine the temperature evolution of its crystal structure and, consequently, of its charge density wave transition. Therefore, the published literature around LaPt2Si2 is often controversial. Here, by means of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, we clarify some of the poorly or partially understood aspects of the physics of LaPt2Si2. In particular, we resolve the complex evolution of its crystal structure and superstructures, identifying the temperature dependence of multiple density wave transitions in good quality LaPt2Si2 single crystals. According to our findings, on cooling from room temperature LaPt2Si2 undergoes a series of subtle structural transitions which can be summarised as follows: second order commensurate tetragonal (P4/n m m)-to-incommensurate structure followed by a first order incommensurate-to-commensurate orthorhombic (P m m n) transition and then a first order commensurate orthorhombic (P m m n)-to-commensurate tetragonal (P4/n m m). The structural transitions are accompanied by both incommensurate and commensurate superstructural distortions of the lattice. The observed behavior is compatible with discommensuration of the CDW in this material.
