The excavation and maintenance of buried natural gas pipelines can lead to deformation and stress redistribution of the pipelines and even cause secondary damage to the pipes with issues. To clarify the impact of excavation unloading on buried pipelines, this study established a finite element three-dimensional pipe-soil model, investigated the mechanical response of pipelines under layered excavation and evaluated various parameters impacting the response. The parameters analyzed include the diameter-thickness ratio of the pipe, excavation length and width, thickness of top covering soil, elastic modulus of soil, specific weight of soil and initial displacement of the pipeline. The study results showed that the pipeline bulges upwards during excavation unloading, the pipe top in the middle is under tension, and the bottom of the pipe is under compression. Therefore, the axial stress and vertical displacement both increase first and then decrease, and they are distributed symmetrically along the pipeline axis; excavating the initially compressed pipeline leads to high strain areas in the pipeline and even local buckling. The response to slope excavation is more pronounced than that to straight trench excavation; the additional response of the pipeline increases with the increase of diameter-thickness ratio, excavation width, thickness of pipe top covering soil and specific weight of soil, but it decreases with the increasing soil elastic modulus. The additional response is closely related to excavation length and the initial displacement. Hydrogen is an ideal energy carrier manufactured mainly by the natural gas steam reforming hydrogen production process. The concentrations of  CH 4 ,  CO ,  CO 2 , and  H 2  in this process are key variables related to product quality, which thus need to be controlled accurately in real-time. However, conventional measurement methods for these concentrations suffer from significant delays or huge acquisition and upkeep costs. Virtual sensors effectively compensate for these shortcomings. Unfortunately, previously developed virtual sensors have not fully considered the complex characteristics of the hydrogen production process. Therefore, a virtual sensor model, called "moving window-based dynamic variational Bayesian principal component analysis (MW-DVBPCA)" is developed for key gas concentration estimation. The MW-DVBPCA considers complicated characteristics of the hydrogen production process, involving dynamics, time variations, and transportation delays. Specifically, the dynamics are modeled by the finite impulse response paradigm, the transportation delays are automatically determined using the differential evolution algorithm, and the time variations are captured by the moving window method. Moreover, a comparative study of data-driven virtual sensors is carried out, which is sporadically discussed in the literature. Egypt has the potential to generate a significant amount of energy from renewable technologies, in particular solar PV, concentrated solar power (CSP), and onshore and offshore wind. The energy sector is reliant on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, for electricity production and is at risk of locking itself into a high carbon pathway. Globally, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with national energy sectors is a target outlined in the UN's Paris Agreement. To reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with a higher dependence on fossil fuels, Egypt must consider upscaling renewable energy technologies (RETs) to achieve a clean energy transition (CET). This research modelled six scenarios using clicSAND for OSeMOSYS to identify the technologies and policy target improvements that are needed to upscale RETs within Egypt's energy sector. The results showed that solar PV and onshore wind are key technologies to be upscaled to contribute towards Egypt's CET. The optimal renewable target is the International Renewable Energy Agency's (IRENA) target of 53% of electricity being sourced from RETs by 2030, which will cost USD 16.4 billion more up to 2035 than Egypt's current Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) target of 42% by 2035; it also saves 732.0 MtCO2 over the entire modelling period to 2070. Socio-economic barriers to this transition are considered, such as recent discoveries of natural gas reserves combined with a history of energy insecurity, political instability impacting investor confidence, and a lack of international climate funding. Effective decarbonization of the power generation sector requires a multi-pronged approach, including the implementation of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technologies. The Graz cycle features oxy-combustion CO2 capture in a power production scheme which can result in higher thermal efficiencies than that of a combined cycle. However, the auxiliary consumption required by the air separation unit to provide pure O2 results in a significant energy penalty relative to an unabated plant. In order to mitigate this penalty, the present study explores the possibility of chemical looping combustion (CLC) as an alternative means to supply oxygen for conversion of the fuel. For a midscale power plant, despite reducing the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) by approximately 12.6% at a CO2 tax of EUR 100/ton and a natural gas price of EUR 6.5/GJ and eliminating the energy penalty of CCS relative to an unabated combined cycle, the cost reductions of CLC in the Graz cycle were not compelling relative to commercially available post-combustion CO2 capture with amines. Although the central assumptions yielded a 3% lower cost for the Graz-CLC cycle, an uncertainty quantification study revealed an 85.3% overlap in the interquartile LCOE range with that of the amine benchmark, indicating that the potential economic benefit is small compared to the uncertainty of the assessment. Thus, this study indicates that the potential of CLC in gas-fired power production is limited, even when considering highly efficient advanced configurations like the Graz cycle. Hydrogen is a carbon-free energy source that can be obtained from various sources. The blending of hydrogen represents a transitional phase in the shift from natural gas systems to hydrogen-based systems. However, concerns about the safety implications of introducing hydrogen have led to extensive discussions. This paper utilizes Fluent 17.0 numerical simulation software to simulate the leakage of hydrogen-blended natural gas in a closed domestic kitchen and analyze the concentration distribution and its variation pattern after a leakage. An experimental platform is set up, and a mixture of nitrogen and helium gas is used as a substitute for hydrogen-blended natural gas for the simulations and experiments. The simulation results demonstrate that the leaked gas spreads and accumulates towards the top of the space, gradually filling the entire area as the leak persists. As the hydrogen content in the leaked gas increases, the dispersion capacity of the gas in the confined space also increases. Furthermore, as the flow rate of the leaked gas increases, the average concentration of the leaked gas rises, and the gas stratification in the confined kitchen diminishes. The concentration distribution observed in the experiments aligns with the simulation results. After establishing the feasibility conditions of the model, the dispersion of the hydrogen-blended natural gas in the kitchen is further simulated. The results suggest that blending hydrogen into the gas enhances the dispersion of the gas after a leak, leading to a wider distribution within the kitchen and an increased risk in the event of a leak. Additionally, this paper employs the CASD module of FLACS 11.0 software to construct a three-dimensional geometric model of the domestic kitchen for simulation studies on the explosion of hydrogen-blended natural gas in a confined space. By adjusting the hydrogen ratio in the combustible gases present in the space and examining the variations in hydrogen concentration and external conditions, such as opening or closing the door, the influence on parameters including the peak explosion pressure, explosion overpressure, explosion flame temperature, and explosion response time are examined. This paper addresses the problem of hydrogen generation from hydrocarbon gases using Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) with byproduct CO2 injected into and stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir. It focuses on the reservoir aspects of the problem using numerical simulation of the processes. To this aim, a numerical model of a real oil reservoir was constructed and calibrated based on its 30-year production history. An algorithm was developed to quantify the CO2 amount from the SMR process as well as from the produced fluids, and optionally, from external sources. Multiple simulation forecasts were performed for oil and gas production from the reservoir, hydrogen generation, and concomitant injection of the byproduct CO2 back to the same reservoir. EOR from miscible oil displacement was found to occur in the reservoir. Various scenarios of the forecasts confirmed the effectiveness of the adopted strategy for the same source of hydrocarbons and CO2 sink. Detailed simulation results are discussed, and both the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed approach for blue hydrogen generation are concluded. In particular, the question of reservoir fluid balance was emphasized, and its consequences were presented. The presented technology, using CO2 from hydrogen production and other sources to increase oil production, also has a significant impact on the protection of the natural environment via the elimination of CO2 emission to the atmosphere with concomitant production of H2. Reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are required globally. Under this background, the Multilayer Perceptron machine-learning algorithm was used to predict liquid natural gas consumption to improve energy consumption efficiency. Setting hyperparameters remains challenging in machine-learning-based prediction. Here, to improve prediction efficiency, hyperparameter autotuning via Bayesian optimization was used to identify the optimal combination of the eight key hyperparameters. The autotuned model was validated by comparing its predictive performance with that of a base model (with all hyperparameters set to the default values) using the coefficient of variation of root-mean-square error (CvRMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) based on the Measurement and Verification Guideline evaluation metrics. To confirm the model's industrial applicability, its predictions were compared with values measured at a small-to-medium-sized food factory. The optimized model performed better than the base model, achieving a CvRMSE of 12.30% and an R2 of 0.94, and achieving a predictive accuracy of 91.49%. In diesel-ignited natural gas marine dual-fuel engines, the pilot diesel injection timing (PDIT) determines the premixing time and ignition moment of the combustible mixture in the cylinder. The PDIT plays a crucial role in the subsequent development of natural gas flame combustion. In this paper, four PDITs (− 8 °CA, − 6 °CA, − 4 °CA, and − 2 °CA) were studied. The results show that the advancement of PDIT increased the engine's power, thermal efficiency, and natural gas flame spread velocity, and increased NO emissions and CH4 emissions of the marine engine. The PDIT affected the ignition delay period and the rapid combustion period to a greater extent than the slow combustion period and the post combustion period. With each 2 °CA advancement of PDIT, the engine's power increased by 69.87 kW, thermal efficiency increased by 0.42%, radial flame spread velocity increased by 2 m/s, axial flame spread velocity increased by 1.7 m/s, NO emissions increased by 6.1%, and CH4 emissions increased by 3.75%. The use of hydrogen-blended natural gas presents an efficacious pathway toward the rapid, large-scale implementation of hydrogen energy, with pipeline transportation being the principal method of conveyance. However, pipeline materials are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement in high-pressure hydrogen environments. Natural gas contains various impurity gases that can either exacerbate or mitigate sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, we analyzed the mechanisms through which multiple impurity gases could affect the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of pipeline steel. We examined the effects of O2 and CO2 on the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of L360 pipeline steel through a series of fatigue crack growth tests conducted in various environments. We analyzed the fracture surfaces and assessed the fracture mechanisms involved. We discovered that CO2 promoted the hydrogen embrittlement of the material, whereas O2 inhibited it. O2 mitigated the enhancing effect of CO2 when both gases were mixed with hydrogen. As the fatigue crack growth rate increased, the influence of impurity gases on the hydrogen embrittlement of the material diminished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent increases in gas-fired power generation have engendered increased interdependencies between natural gas and power transmission systems. These interdependencies have amplified existing vulnerabilities in gas and power grids, where disruptions can require the curtailment of load in one or both systems. Although typically operated independently, coordination of these systems during severe disruptions can allow for targeted delivery to lifeline services, including gas delivery for residential heating and power delivery for critical facilities. To address the challenge of estimating maximum joint network capacities under such disruptions, we consider the task of determining feasible steady-state operating points for severely damaged systems while ensuring the maximal delivery of gas and power loads simultaneously, represented mathematically as the nonconvex joint Maximal Load Delivery (MLD) problem. To increase its tractability, we present a mixed-integer convex relaxation of the MLD problem. Then, to demonstrate the relaxation's effectiveness in determining bounds on network capacities, exact and relaxed MLD formulations are compared across various multi-contingency scenarios on nine joint networks ranging in size from 25 to 1191 nodes. The relaxation-based methodology is observed to accurately and efficiently estimate the impacts of severe joint network disruptions, often converging to the relaxed MLD problem's globally optimal solution within ten seconds. Methane Number (MN) is a fuel rating technique for gaseous fuels analogous to Octane Number. This study establishes and shares a repeatable and reproducible method for MN determination of a gaseous fuel using a modified Cooperative Fuel Research Engine (CFR). Adaptations required to convert a CFR engine for use in the MN test procedure are identified. The investigation includes allowable environmental parameters and operating variation limits. An essential aspect of the MN method involves identifying and quantifying Knock Intensity (KI) during engine operation. CFR engines, originally designed for gasoline testing, come equipped with their own knock measurement systems utilizing a capacitive detonation sensor. The original system is compared with a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) approach that uses a piezoelectric pressure transducer. Quantification of methane number requires an accurate assessment of the reference fuel blend (CH4 + H2). Technologies used in the transport sector have a substantial impact on air pollution and global warming. Due to the immense impact of air pollution on Earth, it is crucial to investigate novel ways to reduce emissions. One way to reduce pollution from ICE is to use alternative fuels. However, blends of alternative fuels in different proportions are known to improve some emissions' parameters, while others remain unchanged or even worsen. It is therefore necessary to find ways of reducing all the main pollutants. For SI engines, mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas can be used as alternative fuels. The use of such fuel mixtures makes it possible to reduce CO, HC, and CO2 emissions from the engine, but the unique properties of hydrogen tend to increase NOx emissions. One way to address this challenge is to use port water injection (PWI). This paper describes studies carried out under laboratory conditions on an SI engine fuelled with CNG and CNG + H2 mixtures (H2 = 5, 10, 15% by volume) and injected with 60 and 120 mL/min of water into the engine. The tests showed that the additional water injection reduced CO and NOx emissions by about 20% and 4–5 times, respectively. But, the results also show that water injection at the rate of 120 mL/min increases fuel consumption by between 2.5% and 7% in all cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of diagnostic tests under steady-state speed conditions of an unloaded engine do not fully reflect the emissivity of vehicles adapted to run on natural gas. Therefore, it is reasonable to pay attention to the emissions performance of these vehicles under dynamic conditions. In this regard, the tests were carried out on a chassis dynamometer with the engine fueled by gasoline and natural gas. Due to the area of operation of natural gas vehicles being usually limited to urban areas, the urban phases of the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) and WLTC (Worldwide harmonized Light-duty vehicles Test Cycle) were adapted. While CO2 emissions are lower when fueled by natural gas, CH4 emissions can be high, which is related to momentary changes in the composition of the combustible mixture. Although CH4 emissions are higher when the engine runs on natural gas, the CO2eq value is, depending on the driving cycle, about 15–25% lower than when running on petrol. Additionally, studies have shown that in engines adapted to run on CNG (compressed natural gas), it is advisable to consider the use of catalytic converters optimized to run on natural gas, as is the case with vehicles which are factory–adapted to run on CNG. The present paper provides a brief overview of the existing methods for energy separation and an analysis of the possibility of the practical application of the Hartmann–Sprenger effect to provide quasi-isothermal pressure reduction of natural gas at the facilities within a gas transmission system. The recommendations of external authors are analyzed. A variant of a quasi-isothermal pressure regulator is proposed, which assumes the mixing of flows after energy separation. Using a numerical simulation of gas dynamics, it is demonstrated that the position of the resonators can be determined on the basis of calculations of the structure of the underexpanded jet without taking into account the resonator and, accordingly, without the need for time-consuming calculations of the dynamics of the processes. Based on the results of simulating the gas dynamics of two nozzle–resonator pairs installed in a single flow housing, it is shown that, in order to optimize the regulator length, the width of the passage between the two nearest resonators should be greater than or equal to the sum of diameters of the critical sections of the nozzles. Context: The solubility variations of elemental sulfur are of great importance in the prevention of sulfur deposition during the development of high-sulfur gas formations. It has been observed that the solubility varies with H2S content, which is the main solvent of elemental sulfur in natural gas. Moreover, the addition of small amounts of CH4 and/or CO2 in H2S leads to a dramatic solubility reduction of which the mechanism remains unclear. Using a modified direct coexistence method, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to uncover the molecular mechanism of the solubility reduction. The observed solubility variations with H2S content are reproduced, and the solubility reduction is interpreted by the antisolvent effect of CH4 and CO2. While the H2S content varies in a wide range in the known high-sulfur gas formation, our simulations provide useful information for controlling the sulfur deposition in gas development. Methods: Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out using the LAMMPS package. The initial models are constructed with the Packmol software. The Ballone and Jones' potential is used for S8, the Galliero's potential for H2S and CO2, and the transferable potentials for phase equilibria-united atom (TraPPE-UA) force field for CH4. We present a new term-structure model for commodity futures prices based on Trolle and Schwartz (2009), which we extend by incorporating seasonal stochastic volatility represented with two different sinusoidal expressions. We obtain a quasi-analytical representation of the characteristic function of the futures log-prices and closed-form expressions for standard European options' prices using the fast Fourier transform algorithm. We price plain vanilla options on the Henry Hub natural gas futures contracts, using our model and extant models. We obtain higher accuracy levels with our model than with the extant models. Aqueous phase trapping (APT), which is one of the most prominent damages, seriously restricts the natural gas production in tight gas sandstone with low permeability. Pore size and microscopic pore structures are the most important factors to determine the water blocking damage. In this paper, 9 core samples from tight gas sandstone with various physical properties were employed, and the pore size distribution (PSD) of the core samples were investigated by high pressure mercury intrusion tests (HPMI). Results showed that the porosity of core samples ranges from 5.68% to 13.7%, and the permeability ranges from 0.00456 to 7.86 mD, which is a typical tight reservoir with strong heterogeneity. According to the HPMI capillary curve, the cores can be divided into two types: Type I and Type II, and the pore sizes of type I are larger than that of type II. Fractal distributions were obtained using HPMI data to further determine the pore structure characteristics of tight reservoirs. The pore structures of tight sandstones display the multifractal fractal feature: D1 corresponding to macro-pores, and D2 corresponding to fractal dimension of micro-pores. Furthermore, APT damage was determined by the permeability recovery ratios (Kr) after gas flooding tests. The correlation of Kr and PSD and fractal dimensions were jointly analyzed in tight gas sandstone. Although positive correlations between pore size parameters and the permeability recovery ratios were observed with relatively weak correlations, for those core samples with very close permeability, pore size parameters (both permeability and PSD) is inadequate in clarifying this damage. The fractal dimension can well describe the complexity and heterogeneity of flow channels in pores, which can become the determining factor to distinguish the flow capacity of tight sandstone. The D2 for samples of type I and type II exhibited a good negative relation with Kr with a correlation coefficient of 0.9878 and 0.7723, respectively. The significance of this finding is that for tight gas sandstone, fractal dimensions, especially the small pore fractal dimension (D2), can be used to predict the possible APT damage very well. Opportunity for future green hydrogen development in Nepal comes with end- use infrastructural challenges. The heavy reliance of industries on fossil fuels (63.4%) despite the abundance of hydroelectricity poses an additional challenge to the green transition of Nepal. The presented work aims to study the possibility of storing and utilizing spilled hydroelectricity due to runoff rivers as a compatible alternative to imported petroleum fuels. This is achieved by converting green hydrogen from water electrolysis and carbon dioxide from carbon capture of hard-to-abate industries into synthetic methane for heating applications via the Sabatier process. An economy-of-scale study was conducted to identify the optimal scale for the reference case (Industries in Makwanpur District Nepal) for establishing the Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) production industry. The techno- economic assessment was carried out for pilot scale and reference scale production unit individually. Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses were performed to study the project profitability and the sensitivity of the parameters influencing the feasibility of the production plant. The reference scale for the production of Synthetic Natural Gas was determined to be 40 Tons Per Day (TPD), with a total capital investment of around 72.15 Million USD. Electricity was identified as the most sensitive parameter affecting the levelized cost of production (LCOP). The 40 TPD plant was found to be price competitive to LPG when electricity price is subsidized below 3.55 NPR/unit (2.7 c/unit) from 12 NPR/unit (9.2 c/unit). In the case of the 2 TPD plant, for it to be profitable, the price of electricity must be subsidized to well below 2 NPR/kWh. The study concludes that the possibility of SNG production in Nepal is profitable and price-competitive at large scales and at the same time limited by the low round efficiency due to conversion losses. This study evaluated multiple commercially available continuous monitoring (CM) point sensor network (PSN) solutions under single-blind controlled release testing conducted at operational upstream and midstream oil and natural gas (O&G) sites. During releases, PSNs reported site-level emission rate estimates of 0 kg/h between 38 and 86% of the time. When non-zero site-level emission rate estimates were provided, no linear correlation between the release rate and the reported emission rate estimate was observed. The average, aggregated across all PSN solutions during releases, shows 5% of the mixing ratio readings at downwind sensors were greater than the site's baseline plus two standard deviations. Four of seven total PSN solutions tested during this field campaign provided site-level emission rate estimates with the site average relative error ranging from −100% to 24% for solution D, −100% to −43% for solution E, −25% for solution F (solution F was only at one site), and −99% to 430% for solution G, with an overall average of −29% across all sites and solutions. Of all the individual site-level emission rate estimates, only 11% were within ±2.5 kg/h of the study team's best estimate of site-level emissions at the time of the releases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiphase flow entrainment in natural gas engineering significantly influences the safety and efficiency of oil companies since it affects both the flow and the heat transfer process, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. Additionally, current computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodologies seldom consider entrainment behavioral changes in pipe elbows. In this article, a verified CFD method is used to study the entrainment behavior, mechanism, and changes in an elbow. The results show that droplet diameter in a developed annular flow follows a negative skewness distribution; as the radial distance (from the wall) increases, the fluctuation in the droplets becomes stronger, and the velocity difference between the gas and the droplets increases linearly. Turbulence bursts and vortices sucking near the wall jointly contribute to droplet entrainment. As the annular flow enters the elbow, the secondary flow promotes the film expansion to the upper and lower parts of the pipe. Droplets re-occur near the elbow exit intrados, and their size is much smaller than those in the upstream pipe. Vortices sucking under low gas velocity play an important role in this process. These findings provide guidelines for safety and flow assurance issues in natural gas production and transportation and bridge the gap between multiphase flow theory and natural gas engineering. In the context of "dual carbon", restrictions on carbon emissions have attracted widespread attention from researchers. In order to solve the issue of the insufficient exploration of the synergistic emission reduction effects of various low-carbon policies and technologies applied to multiple microgrids, we propose a multi-microgrid electricity cooperation optimization scheduling strategy based on stepped carbon trading, a hydrogen-doped natural gas system and P2G–CCS coupled operation. Firstly, a multi-energy microgrid model is developed, coupled with hydrogen-doped natural gas system and P2G–CCS, and then carbon trading and a carbon emission restriction mechanism are introduced. Based on this, a model for multi-microgrid electricity cooperation is established. Secondly, design optimization strategies for solving the model are divided into the day-ahead stage and the intraday stage. In the day-ahead stage, an improved alternating direction multiplier method is used to distribute the model to minimize the cooperative costs of multiple microgrids. In the intraday stage, based on the day-ahead scheduling results, an intraday scheduling model is established and a rolling optimization strategy to adjust the output of microgrid equipment and energy purchases is adopted, which reduces the impact of uncertainties in new energy output and load forecasting and improves the economic and low-carbon operation of multiple microgrids. Setting up different scenarios for experimental validation demonstrates the effectiveness of the introduced low-carbon policies and technologies as well as the effectiveness of their synergistic interaction. Dual-fuel low-temperature combustion is a possible solution for alleviating the tradeoff between oxides of nitrogen and soot emissions in conventional diesel combustion, albeit with poor combustion stability, high carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbon emissions at low engine loads. The present work compares emissions and combustion (heat release and other metrics) of both diesel and poly-oxy methylene dimethyl ether as high-reactivity fuels to ignite natural gas while leveraging spray-targeted reactivity stratification, which involved multiple injections of the high-reactivity fuels. The experiments included six parametric sweeps of: (1) start of first injection, (2) start of second injection, (3) percentage of energy substitution of natural gas, (4) commanded injection duration ratio, (5) rail pressure, and (6) intake pressure. The experiments were performed on a 1.8 L heavy-duty single-cylinder research engine operating at a medium speed of 1339 rev/min. Not-to-exceed limits for the indicated oxides of nitrogen emissions, maximum pressure rise rate, and the coefficient of variation of the indicated mean effective pressure were set to 1 g/kWh, 10 bar/CAD, and 10%, respectively. In the context of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, in order to achieve low carbon emissions and promote the efficient utilization of wind energy, hydrogen energy as an important energy carrier is proposed to mix hydrogen and natural gas to form hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG). It is also injected into the natural gas pipeline network to achieve the transmission and utilization of hydrogen energy. At the same time, the participation of demand response is considered, the load's peak and trough periods are adjusted, and the large-scale consumption of renewable energy and the reduction in carbon emissions are achieved. First of all, a fine model of hydrogen production and hydrogen use equipment is established to analyze the impact of adding hydrogen mixing on the economy and the low-carbon property of the system. With green certificates and demand response, the utilization rate of hydrogen energy is improved to further explore the energy utilization rate and emission reduction capacity of the system. Secondly, on the basis of modeling, the optimal scheduling strategy is proposed with the sum of energy purchase cost, equipment operation cost, carbon emission cost, wind curtailment cost, and green certificate income as the lowest objective function. Considering the constraints such as hydrogen blending ratio and flexible load ratio of the pipeline network, a low-carbon economic scheduling model of hydrogen mixed natural gas was established. The model was linearized and solved by using MATLAB 2021a and CPLEX solver. By comparing different scenarios, the superiority of the model and the effectiveness of the strategy are verified. Natural gas is the primary fuel used in U.S. residences, yet little is known about its consumption patterns and drivers. We use daily county-level gas consumption data to assess the spatial patterns of the relationships and the sensitivities of gas consumption to outdoor air temperature across U.S. households. We fitted linear-plus-plateau functions to daily gas consumption data in 1000 counties, and derived two key coefficients: the heating temperature threshold (Tcrit) and the gas consumption rate change per 1°C temperature drop (Slope). We identified the main predictors of Tcrit and Slope (like income, employment rate, and building type) using interpretable machine learning models built on census data. Finally, we estimated a potential 2.47 million MtCO2 annual emission reduction in U.S. residences by gas savings due to household insulation improvements and hypothetical behavioral change toward reduced consumption by adopting a 1°C lower Tcrit than the current value. Ultra‐deep Sinian carbonate rocks are rich in natural gas, and the Deng‐4 Member of the Central Sichuan Basin has been shown to have an extremely high degree of thermal evolution. They are characterized by dry gas produced due to the thermal cracking of palaeo‐oil reservoirs (PORs). The distribution of PORs as materials for the formation of cracked gas reservoirs remains unclear. The complex multistage evolution process and limited drilling data make it challenging to precisely and systematically recover a range of PORs. Based on basin and petroleum system modelling (BPSM), the bottom‐up migration and accumulation method was used to investigate the distribution of PORs. Research shows that the PORs in the Sinian Deng‐4 Member were mainly formed in the Early–Middle Triassic under the mixed contribution of Cambrian and Sinian source rocks, and the coupling of palaeostructural and trap settings controlled its accumulation. Generally, the distribution of PORs can be divided into two categories: one is located at the core of the uplift zone and is controlled by structural‐stratigraphic composite traps, whereas the other is controlled by a series of lithologic traps formed in the slope area. Sensitivity analysis showed that the distribution patterns of the PORs were mostly related to the facies conditions (physical characteristics) of the reservoirs. The widely distributed PORs provide necessary and sufficient material conditions for the formation of cracked Sinian gas reservoirs in the Central Sichuan Basin, and the North Slope area has great potential for natural gas exploration in the future. Recently, the application of cryogenic hoses in the field of cryogenic media has become a hot topic, especially in the industry of offshore liquefied natural gas and aerospace field. However, the structure of cryogenic hoses is complex, and reasonable structural properties are required due to the harsh working conditions. There is still plenty of scope for further development to improve the performance in all aspects. In this paper, the current development status of cryogenic hoses for liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation is reviewed first, including the types, manufacturers, structural forms, performance, and key technical challenges. And then, the recent progress and prospect of cryogenic hoses for cryogenic liquid transportation (such as LNG and liquid oxygen) are summarized, including structure design, low-temperature resistant polymers, liquid oxygen compatible polymers, and leakage monitoring technologies. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the research development and application of cryogenic hoses. This study investigates the dispersion of natural gas leakages in urban environments under varying wind conditions (Beaufort levels 1, 2, and 6) and street layouts, with a focus on the implications for mobile leak detection at a height of 0.3 m above ground. Through numerical simulations, we analyze how urban canyons influence wind field and methane (CH4) concentration distributions, highlighting the impact of wind speed and urban geometry on gas dispersion. The key findings indicate that urban structures significantly affect gas dispersion patterns, with higher wind speeds facilitating better dispersion and reducing the risk of high-concentration gas buildups. The study underscores the need to consider both meteorological conditions and urban design in enhancing gas leak detection and safety measures in cities. Natural gas is known as a widely used energy source in residential, business and industrial areas. During the transportation of natural gas by pipelines, accidents occur due to various reasons, which can also lead to gas output. These accidents are events that have the potential to pose important risks in terms of life and property safety, particularly in urban areas and surrounding of pipeline routings. In this study, accident scenarios were generated based on a natural gas distribution pipeline fire that occurred in Istanbul (NW Türkiye) on 28 April 2020 and the impact areas of the jet fire were calculated using the ALOHA program. The effects of source release factors (i.e., pipe length and diameter) and atmospheric conditions (i.e., wind speed, cloud cover, air temperature and relative humidity) on the thermal radiation threat distances associated with jet fire were calculated for the current and worst scenarios. As a result, it was found that pipe length and diameter have a significant effect on threat distances. In addition to the role of the synoptic circulation mechanism on the jet fire for the selected episodic event (position of low/high pressure centers), local atmospheric conditions also have an effect on the threat distance. From the modeling analysis, significant impact of wind speed, air temperature and relative humidity values on the threat distances were found. In the worst scenario, if there were strong northeasterly winds reaching 30.9 m per hour at the time of the jet fire, the threat distances would have been 21 m (red), 28 m (orange) and 42 m (yellow). This case shows that if a natural gas jet fire occurs under the influence of strong northeasterly winds (passing over the Black Sea without encountering any topographic obstacles), poisonous gas will be transported to long distances in a short time and will negatively affect social life and economy. To align with climate initiatives, multiple reporting programs are transitioning from generic activity-based emission factors to site-specific measured emissions data to estimate greenhouse gas emissions at oil and gas facilities. This study contemporaneously deployed two top-down (TD) aerial methods across 14 midstream facilities, building upon previous research in the field. The methods produced multiple whole-facility estimates at each facility, resulting in 773 individual paired estimates (same facility, same day), and robust mean estimates for each facility. Mean estimates for each facility, aggregated across all facilities, differed by nearly 2:1 (49% [32% to 69%]). At 6 of 14 facilities, the methods produced mean estimates that differed by more than a factor of two. These data suggest that one or both methods did not produce accurate facility-level estimates at a majority of facilities and in aggregate across all facilities. The overall results are augmented with two case studies where TD estimates at two pre-selected facilities were coupled with comprehensive onsite measurements to understand the factors driving the divergence between TD and bottom-up (BU) emissions estimates. In 3 of 4 paired comparisons between the intensive onsite estimates and one of the TD methods, the intensive onsite surveys did not conclusively diagnose the difference in estimates. In these cases, our work suggests that the TD methods mis-estimate emissions an unknown fraction of the time, for unknown reasons. While two methods were selected for this study, it is unlikely that the issues identified here are confined to these two methods; similar issues may exist for other similar whole-facility methods on midstream and/or other facility types. These findings have important implications for the construction of voluntary and regulatory reporting programs that rely on emission estimates for reporting fees or penalties, or for studies using whole-facility estimates to aggregate TD emissions to basin or regional estimates. Sulfide stress cracking (SSC) failure is a main concern for the pressure vessel steel Q345 used in harsh sour oil and gas environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Methods used to improve the strength of steel usually decrease their SSC resistance. In this work, a quenching and tempering (Q&T) processing method is proposed to provide higher strength combined with better SSC resistance for hot-rolled Q345 pressure vessel steel. Compared to the initial hot-rolled plates having a yield strength (YS) of ~372 MPa, the Q&T counterparts had a YS of ~463 MPa, achieving a remarkable improvement in the strength level. Meanwhile, there was a resulting SSC failure in the initial hot-rolled plates, which was not present in the Q&T counterparts. The SSC failure was not only determined by the strength. The carbon-rich zone, residual stress, and sensitive hardness in the banded structure largely determined the susceptibility to SSC failure. The mechanism of the property amelioration might be ascribed to microstructural modification by the Q&T processing. Western Hunan province and its surrounding areas are significant targets for shale gas exploration and development in southern China, where the black shale of the lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation and Wunitang Formation is extensively distributed. Geochemical analysis was conducted on the lower Cambrian black shale from a new exploration well of XAD1 located at the southeast margin of the Yangtze paraplatform, followed by a discussion on gas-bearing properties using molecular dynamics simulation. The geochemical characteristics indicate that the black shale in well XAD1 was primarily deposited in a strongly reducing marine environment, with organic matter predominantly composed of type I kerogen derived from algae. Currently, it has reached a stage of high to over maturity with limited potential for liquid hydrocarbon generation. The recovery of the original hydrocarbon generation potential shows that they are excellent source rocks and have completed the main hydrocarbon generation evolution. Despite the favorable conditions for shale gas formation observed in well XAD1, the low measured gas content within the Niutitang Formation suggests that other geological factors may have contributed to a substantial loss of shale gas. Gas adsorption simulation reveals that the maximum methane adsorption capacity (15.77 m3/t) was achieved by Niutitang shale during the late Silurian period when there was an abundant source of natural gas without any influence from CO2, H2O or other molecules. However, due to a lack of natural gas replenishment and subsequent tectonic uplift and subsidence causing variations in temperature and pressure, the methane adsorption capacity gradually decreased (to 6.56 m3/t). Furthermore, water occurrence within the shale reservoir further reduced the methane adsorption capacity (below 2 m3/t), while tectonic activities exacerbated the loss of shale gas potential within this study area. The findings indicate that the dynamic alteration of gas-bearing properties in shale reservoirs due to tectonic movements is a crucial factor influencing the success rate of shale gas exploration in the study area, provided that there are sufficient gas resources and superior reservoir conditions. This paper presents the findings of fifteen energy audits conducted on industrial sites in Canada's Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The audits covered a range of industries including food processing, packaged goods, and finishing processes (powder-coating). The primary focus of the audits was to analyze the natural gas consumption and the performance of major-gas-consuming equipment. The audits identified natural-gas-consuming equipment that could be optimized to yield energy and operational cost savings and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction opportunities. Food production plants' energy intensity ranges from 5.59 m3/ft2 to 17.73 m3/ft2. Therefore, there is a significant opportunity to improve energy consumption through better technology integration. The results of the audits indicate a trend of an increase in the percentage of non-productive consumption with non-productive time. The proposed energy-saving measures include reducing non-productive natural gas consumption, gas-fired equipment tune-up, optimizing boiler loads, and reducing oven exhaust by using variable frequency drives (VFDs). The findings of this study could be used to develop a demand-side management program specifically for small- and medium-sized industrial facilities in the Greater Toronto Area and other parts of Canada. Hydrogen is an emerging technology changing the context of heating with cleaner combustion than traditional fossil fuels. Studies indicate the potential to repurpose the existing natural gas infrastructure, offering consumers a sustainable, economically viable option in the future. The integration of hydrogen in combined heat and power systems could provide residential energy demand and reduce environmental emissions. However, the widespread adoption of hydrogen will face several challenges, such as carbon dioxide emissions from the current production methods and the need for infrastructure modification for transport and safety. Researchers indicated the viability of hydrogen in decarbonizing heat, while some studies also challenged its long-term role in the future of heating. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review is carried out by identifying the following key aspects, which could impact the conclusion on the overall role of hydrogen in heat decarbonization: (i) a holistic view of the energy system, considering factors such as renewable integration and system balancing; (ii) consumer-oriented approaches often overlook the broader benefits of hydrogen in emission reduction and grid stability; (iii) carbon capture and storage scalability is a key factor for large-scale production of low-emission blue hydrogen; (iv) technological improvements could increase the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen; (v) the role of hydrogen in enhancing resilience, especially during extreme weather conditions, raises the potential of hydrogen as a flexible asset in the energy infrastructure for future energy supply; and finally, when considering the UK as a basis case, (vi) incorporating factors such as the extensive gas network and unique climate conditions, necessitates specific strategies. Energy, gases, and solids in underground sites are stored in mining excavations, natural caverns, salt caverns, and in the pore spaces of rock formations. Aquifer formations are mainly isolated aquifers with significant spreading, permeability, and thickness, possessing highly mineralized non-potable waters. This study discusses the most important aspects that determine the storage of natural gas, hydrogen, or carbon dioxide in deep aquifers. In particular, the selection and characterization of the structure chosen for underground storage, the storage capacity, and the safety of the process are considered. The choice of underground sites is made on the basis of the following factors and criteria: geological, technical, economic, environmental, social, political, or administrative–legal. The geological and dynamic model of the storage site is then drawn based on the characteristics of the structure. Another important factor in choosing a structure for the storage of natural gas, hydrogen, or carbon dioxide is its capacity. In addition to the type and dimensions of the structure and the petrophysical parameters of the reservoir rock, the storage capacity is influenced by the properties of the stored gases and the operating parameters of the storage facility. Underground gas storage is a process fraught with natural and technical hazards. Therefore, the geological integrity of the structure under consideration should be documented and verified. This article also presents an analysis of the location and the basic parameters of gas storage and carbon dioxide storage facilities currently operating in underground aquifers. To date, there have been no successful attempts to store hydrogen under analogous conditions. The search for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources is increasingly growing. Aligning this demand with another environmental problem, such as sewage treatment/disposal, is a strategic priority. In light of this, the aim of this study was to estimate the energy potential of sewage generated in the Brazilian state of São Paulo (SP) by using it to produce biomethane. The study also evaluated the viability of using this byproduct of sewage treatment (biomethane) as a substitute for natural gas (NG), as both of them have similar lower heat values. To do this, information was gathered regarding the population, gross domestic product per capita, sewage collected, and natural gas consumption for each of the state's 645 cities, and, based on this, the sewage energy potential, the amount of NG to be substituted by biomethane, and the reduction in CO2 emissions were calculated. Moreover, in order to address a possible allocation of biomethane that could potentially be produced in each SP city and sent to currently NG-consuming cities, an optimization algorithm was proposed. The results indicated a sewage energy potential of 4.68 × 109 kWh/yr for the entire SP state, which would be enough to supply around 10% of the energy value of all the NG currently consumed. It was also observed that from 130 cities with NG consumption, 10 could produce enough biomethane to fully satisfy the natural gas demand. In the elected scenario of optimization, 291 cities were found to be capable of supplying the demand of 26 cities that currently use NG. The potential to reduce CO2 emissions is between 1.81 × 106 and 2.42 × 106 ton/yr, and this range could increase if sewage treatment coverage grows. Despite the challenges inherent in extrapolating a potential study to scenarios that require significative investment, the results obtained are useful for formulating public policies for decarbonization in the near future. Conventional recovery enhancement techniques are aimed at reducing the abandonment pressure, but there is an upper limit for recovery enhancement due to the energy limitation of reservoirs. Gas injection for energy supplementation has become an effective way to enhance gas recovery by reducing hydrocarbon saturation in gas reservoirs. This review systematically investigates progress in gas injection for enhanced gas recovery in three aspects: experiments, numerical simulations and field examples. It summarizes and analyzes the current research results on gas injection for EGR and explores further prospects for future research. The research results show the following: (1) Based on the differences in the physical properties of CO2, N2 and natural gas, effective cushion gas can be formed in bottom reservoirs after gas injection to achieve the effects of pressurization, energy replenishment and gravity differentiation water resistance. However, further experimental evaluation is needed for the degree of increase in penetration ability. (2) It is more beneficial to inject N2 before CO2 or the mixture of N2 and CO2 in terms of EGR effect and cost. (3) According to numerical simulation studies, water drive and condensate gas reservoirs exhibit significant recovery effects, while CO2-EGR in depleted gas reservoirs is more advantageous for burial and storage; current numerical simulations only focus on mobility mass and saturation changes and lack a mixed-phase percolation model, which leads to insufficient analysis of injection strategies and a lack of distinction among different gas extraction effects. Therefore, a mixed-phase-driven percolation model that can characterize the fluid flow path is worth studying in depth. (4) The De Wijk and Budafa Szinfelleti projects have shown that gas injection into water drive and depleted reservoirs has a large advantage for EGR, as it can enhance recovery by more than 10%. The different reservoirs in deep Songliao Basin have non-homogeneous lithologies and include multiple layers with a high content of hydrogen gas. The gas composition and stable isotope characteristics vary significantly, but the origin analysis of different gas types has previously been weak. Based on the geochemical parameters of gas samples from different depths and the analysis of geological settings, this research covers the diverse origins of natural gas in different strata. The gas components are mainly methane with a small amount of C2+, and non-hydrocarbon gases, including nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and helium (He). At greater depth, the carbon isotope of methane becomes heavier, and the hydrogen isotope points to a lacustrine sedimentary environment. With increasing depth, the origins of N2 and CO2 change gradually from a mixture of organic and inorganic to inorganic. The origins of hydrogen gas are complex and include organic sources, water radiolysis, water-rock (Fe2+containing minerals) reactions, and mantle-derived. The shales of Denglouku and Shahezi Formations, as source rocks, provide the premise for generation and occurrence of organic gas. Furthermore, the deep faults and fluid activities in Basement Formation control the generation and migration of mantle-derived gas. The discovery of a high content of H2 in study area not only reveals the organic and inorganic association of natural-gas generation, but also provides a scientific basis for the exploration of deep hydrogen-rich gas. The Zhongjiang gas field is a typical large gas field in terrigenous strata of the Western Sichuan Depression. It remains debatable which member of the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation served as the source rocks and how significant the member contributed to the gas accumulations in the Zhongjiang gas field. In this study, we analyzed the essential characteristics of the Lower Jurassic source rocks and the geochemical features of light hydrocarbons in natural gas from the 2nd (T3x²) and 4th members (T3x4) of the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation (T3x), as well as the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao (J2s) and Qianfoya (J2q) formations. Based on this, we explored the sources of the natural gas in the Zhongjiang gas field and determined the natural gas migration patterns and their effects on the properties of light hydrocarbons in the natural gas. The results indicate that the Lower Jurassic lacustrine source rocks of the Zhongjiang gas field contain humic organic matter, with vitrinite reflectance (Ro) values ranging from 0.86% to 0.98%. Samples meeting the criterion for effective source rocks [total organic carbon (TOC) content ≥0.75%] exhibited an average TOC content of merely 1.02%, suggesting significantly lower hydrocarbon generation potential than source rocks in the underlying T3x, which show higher thermal maturity and TOC contents. For natural gas samples from T3x², T3x4, J2s, and J2q reservoirs, their C5-7 iso-alkane content was significantly higher than their n-alkane content, and their methylcyclohexane (MCH) index ranged from 59.0% to 77.3%, indicating the predominance of methylcyclohexane in C7 light hydrocarbons. As indicated by the origin identification and gas-source correlation based on the geochemical features of light hydrocarbons, the natural gas in the Zhongjiang gas field is typical coal-derived gas. The gas from the primary pay zone of the Shaximiao Formation, with significantly high K1, (P2 + N2)/C7, and P3/C7 values, predominantly originated from the 5th member of the T3x and migrated in the free phase, with a small amount possibly sourced from the Lower Jurassic source rocks. The dissolution and adsorption during gas migration led to a decrease in the aromatic content in C6-7 light hydrocarbons and an increase in the isoheptane values. Therefore, their effects must be considered when determining the gas origin and thermal maturity based on the aromatic content in C6-7 light hydrocarbons and iso-heptane values. The right bank of the Amu Darya Basin enjoys abundant natural gas resources, on which the Callovian-Oxfordian strata in the middle of Block B serve as the major horizons for natural gas production. However, the characteristics and distribution patterns of the sedimentary microfacies in these strata are yet to be further explored. Based on the analysis of data on drilling, logging, cores, and thin sections from 29 typical wells, as well as the regional sedimentary background, this study inferred that the middle of Block B evolved from the Callovian ramp platform into the Oxfordian rimmed platform. Moreover, this study determined that the inner-ramp intertidal-subtidal shallow-water subfacies mainly developed during the Callovian and transitioned into the shallow shelf subfacies during the Oxfordian. This study identified eight sedimentary microfacies, namely reef knoll, reef-shoal complex, bioclastic shoal, psammitic shoal, bioherm, lime mud mound, intershoal (intermound), and static-water mud. Based on research into the high-precision sequence-sedimentary microfacies framework, this study built a geological model for the development of sedimentary microfacies in the study area. According to this geological model, the sedimentary microfacies in the study area are characterized by vertical alternation of reef-shoal complex, bioclastic (psammitic) shoal, bioherm, and intershoal microfacies. Moreover, they show the development of reef knoll, reef-shoal complex, bioclastic (psammitic) shoal, and bioherm (or lime mud mound) laterally from west to east, with the physical properties of the reservoirs deteriorating from west to east accordingly. The microfacies of reef-shoal complex and the bioclastic (psammitic) shoal predominate in the study area, and their deposition and development are controlled by sequence boundaries and are also affected by paleo-landforms. Accurate and comprehensive quantification of oil and gas methane emissions is pivotal in informing effective methane mitigation policies, while also supporting the assessment and tracking of progress towards emissions reduction targets set by governments and industry. While national bottom-up source-level inventories are useful for understanding the sources of methane emissions, they are often unrepresentative across spatial scales, and their reliance on generic emission factors produces underestimations when compared with measurement-based inventories. Here, we compile and analyze previously reported ground-based facility-level methane emissions measurements in the major US oil and gas producing basins and develop representative methane emission profiles for key facility categories in the US oil and gas supply chain, including well sites, natural gas compressor stations, processing plants, crude oil refineries, and pipelines. We then integrate these emissions data with comprehensive spatial data on national oil and gas activity to estimate each facility's mean total methane emissions and uncertainties, from which we develop a mean estimate of national methane emissions, resolved at 0.1° × 0.1° spatial scales (~10 km × 10 km). From this measurement-based methane emissions inventory (EI-ME), we estimate total US national oil/gas methane emissions of 15.7 Tg (95 % confidence interval of 14–18 Tg) in 2021 which is 2.5 times greater than the EPA Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Our estimate represents a mean gas production-normalized methane loss rate of 2.6 %, consistent with recent satellite-based estimates. We find significant variability in both the magnitude and spatial distribution of basin-level methane emissions, ranging from <1 % methane loss rates in the gas-dominant Appalachian and Haynesville regions to >3–6 % in oil-dominant basins, including the Permian, Bakken, and the Uinta. Additionally, we present and compare novel comprehensive wide-area airborne remote sensing data and results of total area methane emissions and the relative contributions of diffuse and concentrated methane point sources as quantified using MethaneAIR in sub-regions of the Permian and Uinta basins that together indicate diffuse area sources accounting for the majority of total regional oil and gas emissions. Our assessment offers key insights into plausible underlying drivers of basin-to-basin variabilities in oil and gas methane emissions, emphasizing the importance of integrating measurement-based data in developing high-resolution, spatially explicit methane inventories in support of accurate methane assessment, attribution, and mitigation. High speed motors are widely used in industrial applications owing to their unique features, such as compact framework, high performance, and high reliability. Based on the finite volume method and numerical heat transfer theory, this study establishes a stator-air gap-rotor model, and the flow and heat transfer in the air gap between the stator and rotor in a high speed motor are investigated with high pressure natural gas as the cooling medium. Meanwhile, the "radial tri-vortex partition, alternating axial distribution" feature of the turbulent Taylor-Couette vortex in the air gap of the motor is determined. Then, the optimal structural parameters which can realize the heat transfer enhancement of motor air gap are obtained. Finally, an optical fiber grating temperature measurement system based on the wavelength division multiplexing technology is utilized to attain the temperature distributions on the stator and rotor surfaces. [Display omitted] Utilizing catalytic combustion to convert methane (CH 4) into CO 2 and H 2 O stands as one of the most effective approaches for mitigating unburnt CH 4 emissions from natural gas engines. Supported Pd catalysts have been extensively researched for their role in low-temperature CH 4 combustion, with their catalytic activity greatly influenced by metal-support interactions. Surface interaction Pd phases, as a special type of Pd species originating from metal-support interactions on supported Pd catalysts, show controversial catalytic performance in CH 4 combustion. Moreover, the impact of electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI, which refers to metal-support interactions associated with electron transfer) remains unclear. Hence, we opted for Ce-Zr solid solutions with different Ce:Zr molar ratios as supports and synthesized a range of supported Pd catalysts with varying EMSI intensities. Characterization revealed that as the oxygen vacancy concentration on the support increased, electron transfer weakened, leading to a higher Pd-O-Ce content, resulting in a lower CH 4 activation barrier and better catalytic performance. Energy security plays a key role in the functioning of societies; therefore, every country should strive to ensure it. The Russian–Ukrainian dispute has destabilised the fuel market in Europe. In particular, the natural gas sector in Central and Eastern European countries (CEEs) has been disrupted. Poland was forced to reorganise its gas distribution from the eastern to the northern direction. Other Central European countries are also actively working towards independence from Russian gas. Certainly, a viable alternative for most CEEs is to access hydrocarbons located in the Eastern Mediterranean. The development of the gas transmission infrastructure between this region and the CEE can strengthen their energy security. This article provides an SWOT analysis showing that the commissioning of a new gas infrastructure for distributing gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to CEEs is important for their energy security and provides the opportunity to disconnect from Russian gas. Remote sensing detection of natural gas leaks remains challenging when using ground vegetation stress to detect underground pipeline leaks. Other natural stressors may co-present and complicate gas leak detection. This study explores the feasibility of identifying and distinguishing gas-induced stress from other natural stresses by analyzing the hyperspectral reflectance of vegetation. The effectiveness of this discrimination is assessed across three distinct spectral ranges (VNIR, SWIR, and Full spectra). Greenhouse experiments subjected three plant species to controlled environmental stressors, including gas leakage, salinity impact, heavy-metal contamination, and drought exposure. Spectral curves obtained from the experiments underwent preprocessing techniques such as standard normal variate, first-order derivative, and second-order derivative. Principal component analysis was then employed to reduce dimensionality in the spectral feature space, facilitating input for linear/quadratic discriminant analysis (LDA/QDA) to identify and discriminate gas leaks. Results demonstrate an average accuracy of 80% in identifying gas-stressed plants from unstressed ones using LDA. Gas leakage can be discriminated from scenarios involving a single distracting stressor with an accuracy ranging from 76.4% to 84.6%, with drought treatment proving the most successful. The ability to efficiently separate CO2 from other light gases using membrane technology has received a great deal of attention due to its importance in applications such as improving the efficiency of natural gas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A wide range of materials has been employed for the fabrication of membranes. This paper highlights the work carried out to develop novel advanced membranes with improved separation performance. We integrated a polymerizable and amino acid ionic liquid (AAIL) with zeolite to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The MMMs were prepared with (vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride [VBTMA][Cl] and (vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium glycine [VBTMA][Gly] as the polymeric support with 5 wt% zeolite particles, and varying concentrations of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium glycine, [BMIM][Gly] (5–20 wt%) blended together. The membranes were fabricated through photopolymerization. The extent of polymerization was confirmed using FTIR. FESEM confirmed the membranes formed are dense in structure. The thermal properties of the membranes were measured using TGA and DSC. CO2 and CH4 permeation was studied at room temperature and with a feed side pressure of 2 bar. [VBTMA][Gly]-based membranes recorded higher CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity compared to [VBTMA][Cl]-based membranes due to the facilitated transport of CO2. Methane emissions from natural gas systems are increasingly scrutinized, and accurate reporting requires quantification of site- and source-level measurement. We evaluate the performance of 10 available state-of-the-art CH 4 emission quantification approaches against a blind controlled-release experiment at an inerted natural gas compressor station in 2021. The experiment consisted of 17 blind 2 h releases at a single exhaust point or multiple simultaneous ones. The controlled releases covered a range of methane flow rates from 0.01 to 50 kg h -1. Measurement platforms included aircraft, drones, trucks, vans, ground-based stations, and handheld systems. Herewith, we compare their respective strengths, weaknesses, and potential complementarity depending on the emission rates and atmospheric conditions. Most systems were able to quantify the releases within an order of magnitude. The level of errors from the different systems was not significantly influenced by release rates larger than 0.1 kg h -1 , with much poorer results for the 0.01 kg h -1 release. It was found that handheld optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras underestimated the emissions. In contrast, the "site-level" systems, relying on atmospheric dispersion, tended to overestimate the emission rates. We assess the dependence of emission quantification performance on key parameters such as wind speed, deployment constraints, and measurement duration. At the low wind speeds encountered (below 2 m s -1), the experiments did not reveal a significant dependence on wind speed. The ability to quantify individual sources degraded during multiple-source releases. Compliance with the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership's (OGMP 2.0) highest level of reporting may require a combination of the specific advantages of each measurement technique and will depend on reconciliation approaches. Self-reported uncertainties were either not available or were based on the standard deviation in a series of independent realizations or fixed values from expert judgment or theoretical considerations. This study investigated dual-fuel engine performance at high altitude. The test engine was modified from a high-pressure common-rail diesel engine and fuelled with diesel and natural gas. The impact of fuel substitution rate, which is the most critical calibration parameter of dual-fuel engines, on the fuel economy and emissions was studied. Pilot diesel fuel and natural gas flow rates were optimized to minimize fuel consumption while ensuring good combustion stability, emissions, and durability. The advantages of full-load power capability, fuel consumption, and emissions of the dual-fuel engine were revealed with a comparison to the pure diesel engine. This paper also addresses the performance of the dual-fuel engine at high altitudes and reveals its advantages. With an in-cylinder pressure analysis, the test results showed that the dual-fuel engine could achieve higher brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) in a wide range of engine speed compared to the pure diesel engine. The Outer Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is populated with numerous oil and natural gas (ONG) platforms which produce NOx (NOx = NO + NO2), a major component of air pollution. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is mandated to ensure that the air quality of coastal states is not degraded by these emissions. As part of a NASA‐BOEM collaboration, we conducted a satellite data‐based analysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) patterns and trends in the GOM. Data from the OMI and TROPOMI sensors were used to obtain 18+ year records of tropospheric column (TrC) NO2 in three GOM regions: (a) Houston urban area, (b) near shore area off the Louisiana coast, and a (c) deepwater area off the Louisiana coast. The 2004–2022 time series show a decreasing trend for the urban (−0.027 DU/decade) and near shore (−0.0022 DU/decade) areas, and an increasing trend (0.0019 DU/decade) for the deepwater area. MERRA‐2 wind and TROPOMI NO2 data were used to reveal several NO2 hotspots (up to 25% above background values) under calm wind conditions near individual platforms. The NO2 signals from these deepwater platforms and the high density of shallow water platforms closer to shore were confirmed by TrC NO2 anomalies of up to 10%, taking into account the monthly TrC NO2 climatology over the GOM. The results presented in this study establish a baseline for future estimates of emissions from the ONG hotspots and provide a methodology for analyzing NO2 measurements from the new geostationary TEMPO instrument. In collaboration with BOEM, we used satellite data from the OMI and TROPOMI sensors to construct an 18+ year record of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a proxy for NOx, in the Gulf Coast region. These time series focused on three areas: (a) Houston urban, (b) off the Louisiana coast, and (c) deepwater Gulf off Louisiana. These regions experienced changes in tropospheric column NO2 of −13.7%, −5.8%, and +5.4% per decade, respectively. We also identified NO2 hotspots from ONG platforms using TROPOMI NO2 averages under calm wind conditions. The ONG deepwater platforms enhance NO2 background amounts by 7%–13% on average, and up to 25% for the Mars and Olympus platforms combined. The results presented here will facilitate our work on emissions estimates from these sources and on applications to the recently launched TEMPO instrument. Decarbonizing the current steel and power sectors through the development of the hydrogen direct-reduction iron ore–electric arc furnace route and the 100% hydrogen-fired gas turbine cycle is crucial. The current study focuses on three clusters of research works. The first cluster covers the investigation of the mass and energy balance of the route and the subsequent application of these values in experiments to optimize the reduction yield of iron ore. In the second cluster, the existing gas turbine unit was selected for the complete replacement of natural gas with hydrogen and for finding the most optimal mass and energy balance in the cycle through an Aspen HYSYS model. In addition, the chemical kinetics in the hydrogen combustion process were simulated using Ansys Chemkin Pro to research the emissions. In the last cluster, a comparative economic analysis was conducted to identify the levelized cost of production of the route and the levelized cost of electricity of the cycle. The findings in the economic analysis provided good insight into the details of the capital and operational expenditures of each industrial sector in understanding the impact of each kg of hydrogen consumed in the plants. These findings provide a good basis for future research on reducing the cost of hydrogen-based steel and power sectors. Moreover, the outcomes of this study can also assist ongoing, large-scale hydrogen and ammonia projects in Uzbekistan in terms of designing novel hydrogen-based industries with cost-effective solutions. Thanks to investments in diversifying the supply of natural gas, Poland did not encounter any gas supply issues in 2022 when gas imports from Russia were ceased due to the Russian Federation's armed intervention in Ukraine. Over the past few years, the supply of gas from routes other than the eastern route has substantially grown, particularly the supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) via the LNG terminal in Świnoujście. The growing proportion of LNG in Poland's gas supply leads to a rise in ethane levels in natural gas, as verified by the review of data taken at a specific location within the gas system over the years 2015, 2020, and 2022. Using measurements of natural gas composition, the effectiveness of the steam hydrocarbon reforming process was simulated in the Gibbs reactor via Aspen HYSYS. The simulations confirmed that as the concentration of ethane in the natural gas increased, the amount of hydrogen produced, and the heat required for reactions in the reformer also increased. This article aims to analyze the influence of the changes in natural gas quality in the Polish transmission network caused by changes in supply structures on the mass and heat balance of the theoretical steam reforming reactor. Nowadays, the chemical composition of natural gas may be significantly different from that assumed years ago at the plant's design stage. The consequence of such a situation may be difficulties in operating, especially when controlling the quantity of incoming natural gas to the reactor based on volumetric flow without considering changes in chemical composition.
