In the Appendix to his dissertation, with respect to Kant, Marx provided an in-depth analysis of the ontological proof of the existence of God. Here, we explore this analysis in detail. Firstly, we argue that "faith" (Glaube) is the foundation of Marx's interpretation of the ontological proof of God and its difference from that of Kant. On one hand, Marx's understanding of the ontological argument can be called the "Realization of Belief" (RB). The object of faith is, for the believer, endowed with some kind of real power; that is to say, the object is real for the believer who has faith in it. This line of argument differs from the Kantian Hypostatization of Idea (HI), which attempts to prove the transcendental God as an a priori concept that implies itself as an empirical being or a posteriori phenomenon. On the other hand, "faith" was also the foundation upon which Marx based his interpretation of Kant. Subsequently, in the context of Marx's dissertation, we clarify the connotations of "reality", "belief", and "faith". "Reality" refers to objects exerting a real force that works on those with faith in their imagination while not necessarily entailing that the imagined object of belief is an empirical one. "Belief" refers either to an opinion (doxa) based on "faith" or to an idea without necessity in the sense of David Hume's philosophy. As for "faith", Marx uses this term in the Protestant sense, meaning obedience to the object one believes in, where obedience refers to the absence of self-righteousness. In a state of "faith", the faithful one possesses "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1). Finally, on the basis of these two considerations, we reflect on the existing academic interpretations of the theme of this article and highlight some differences between these interpretations and the present article. We show that existing interpretations of Marx's summary either conflate the two theories of the HI and RB or miss the importance of "faith" in Marx's arguments. We conclude that Marx, at the time of his dissertation, interpreted the ontological argument by way of the RB, which was based on the concept of "faith", and that his critical understanding of Kant's refutation of the ontological proof was founded on the same interpretation. The term 'breakthrough generation' was coined by the German philosopher Hugo Fischer (1897–1975) in 1930, at the very beginning of the Great Depression. This structural notion represents a timeless, emancipation oriented ideal that effectively integrates the relevant positive qualities and abilities of modern and critically thinking man, which he has potentially picked up in the course of his historical development towards a higher humanity as a European and realist, and which he actually possesses as qualities and norms. This complex ethos is intended to form the initial basis on which the modern idea of a European federation is consciously realised. The purpose of this paper is not only to creatively point to these concrete and supporting motivational starting points and qualitative-historical assumptions of the modern European and to place them in a functional framework of intelligibility, but also to recall the important historical-philosophical fact that Fischer's specifically grasped and developed idea of the formation of post-war Europe is very closely linked to the thinking of T. G. Masaryk, whom Fischer admired and respected as a philosopher and statesman and whose democratizing idea of a 'new' Central European space fundamentally inspired him in many ways. Most scholars interpret Marx's prices of production as those which achieve simple reproduction assuming profit rates are equal and all capitals turn over completely each year. The dynamics of equalization, as circulation intertwines with production over the business cycle, is absent. The traditional 'Marxist' equation for the profit rate likewise considers only simple reproduction. This leaves a gap in our understanding of Marx, particularly regarding the impact of turnover time on the profit rate, one of Ricardo's original problems which Marx claimed to solve. Starting from a critique of Veronese Passarella's and Baron's attempt to extend the traditional equation to expanded reproduction, I develop a more general equation showing how changes in turnover times, rate of surplus value and accumulation affect the equalization process, the formation of the general profit rate and hence of prices of production. Finally, considering Moseley's introduction to the recently published translation of a 27-page excerpt from Marx's Economic Manuscript of 1867–1868, I suggest an equation for decomposing the profit adjustment during equalization. This article systematically presents Marx's ideas about political economy and historical materialism in the "Introduction" to the Grundrisse. Two questions are posed and addressed. The first one is: what implications does the "Introduction" have for the contemporary Marxist discussions on economic crisis, and on primitive accumulation? Underlying these two topics is the question of the importance of production relative to distribution, exchange and consumption. Marx sometimes appears to be ambivalent in his treatment of this question, and this partly explains why some Marxists can suggest that the production of commodities under capitalism is not the main aspect of late capitalism, and find the main reason for economic crisis outside of production. Read carefully, however, the "Introduction" does provide enough ground to critique these views. The second question addressed is: what implications might Marx's discussion on political economy and historical materialism, including the relation between culture and economic development, have for the fight for socialism? Using the philosophies of Louis Althusser and István Mészáros, this article seeks to interpret Marx's theory of the transformation of value into price based on a philosophical view that emphasizes both the base/superstructure dialectic (Althusser) and alienation under capitalism (Mészáros). According to the logic of dialectical materialism, the economic base of the capitalist mode of production is determined by a historical dialectic (alienated labor) that produces an unsolvable contradiction with the capitalist imperatives of the superstructure. The alienation of the workers is perpetuated through their active subordination to the ideal and material power of the capitalist superstructure (including its ideal "law of value" which postulates the domination of exchange value over use value). They are led to believe that the profit-embedded prices of the commodities they produce have nothing to do with them. The illusion is that these prices are decided by an abstract "free market." In reality, the laborers, due to their alienation, contribute directly to the formation of these prices by allowing the capitalists to freely compete with each other by lowering their respective "price of production." Drawing on Karl Marx's ecological concepts of the "metabolic rift" and the "emancipation of senses", this paper explores an alternative ecocinema that integrates the ecological with the social and the economic. Early Hollywood films, such as Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) and The Good Earth (1937), represent the metabolic rift in human relationships as a byproduct of the metabolic rift with nature created in the process of urbanization; hence, they can be regarded as precursors to an alternative ecocinema, which I refer to as "metabolic cinema". The Story of the Golden Bell (Jinling Zhuan), a comedy film produced during the Chinese Great Leap Forward in 1958, offers an intriguing case for socialist metabolic cinema as a multisensory medianature that participates in and facilitates the metabolic process between humans and nature, as well as the social metabolism among humans, despite the period's notorious ecological record. The film not only consciously moves away from the visual-centric model associated with capitalist consumerism by using the aural to rectify the once-aberrant visual but also demonstrates how romantic love, as one of the human senses, must be emancipated along with other senses through denouncing utilitarianism and commercialism and, subsequently, returning to need-based labor as the universal condition for the metabolic interaction between humans and nature. This article explores the theory of exploitation which Marx sets out in Capital. It argues that Marx assumes that there are five modes of extraction of surplus value. These are associated with the following principles: (1) extended duration of the working day; (2) enhanced productivity (due to the introduction of new technology); (3) efficient organization of the process of production; (4) increased intensity of labour and (5) depressed consumption of the labourer. The article argues that Marx's theory of exploitation is not as systematic as it could have been. For this reason it is ripe for a theoretical reconstruction. The article also discusses the views of recent commentators who have developed the idea of 'super-exploitation', which is taken from Marx's writings. There is a tendency in this literature to associate this notion with the principle of depressed consumption and to argue that it is especially relevant for understanding of what is happening in the societies of the Global South. Those concerned identify this as a third mode of extracting surplus value, in addition to the principle of extended duration (absolute surplus value) and enhanced productivity (relative surplus value). The article argues that this procedure overlooks certain aspects of Marx's theory of exploitation, especially those having to do with the efficient organization or rational administration of labour within the process of production. Based on a case study of taxi platforms in Oslo, Norway comprised of interviews with drivers and an ethnographic fieldwork working a driver, this article explores the platformization of the Norwegian taxi industry and the drivers' working conditions through Marx's concept of subsumption. In Norway, taxi platforms emerged in an already formally subsumed industry. The platforms have developed a new market segment, and also introduced an additional element in the subsumption of labor, whereby the platforms exert control over the market relations (by determining number of rides, earnings, and potential exclusions) through digital technology. While the platforms' 'algorithmic management' is often described as a technology that might reorganize the world of work, the analysis finds that this form of control does not radically transform the drivers' labor processes and cannot be seen as an example of what Marx termed real subsumption. However, the platformization of the industry, wherein the platforms appropriate the social and technological conditions of production, might result in a reorganization and transformation corresponding to a real subsumption in the future. The article concludes that exploring platform work through Marx's notion of subsumption highlights, on one hand, the relation between platforms and workers as characterized by subordination and domination and, on the other, that a detailed and critical assessment of the actual consequences of platform-based control is necessary to capture the contextual dynamics of platformization. The term 'counter-power' is widely used in political debates and social struggles. Scientifically, however, there is no clear distinction between powers and counter-powers. In the academic debate, largely based on methodological individualism, power is mostly conceived as an interpersonal relation, and counter-powers have no specific role, unless as opposing powers. In this paper, I develop an ontology of capitalist power, based on Marx's critique of capital, and I clarify the role of counter-powers in this ontology. With these lenses, I reconsider critically the debate on power in economics and I discuss the limits of the individualist approach, from neoclassical ultra-liberalism to radical political economics. Vygotsky straddled the period of the Russian Revolution and found himself facing the Marxist materialist ideology of the Soviet Union with the need for a new method of psychology. Ironically, the Soviet Union's need for a Marxist based method of psychology coincided with Vygotsky's prior research on methods of interpretation which were inspired by Hegel and primarily based on the role of consciousness and culture. As a result of Vygotsky's pre-revolutionary work and inspiration from Hegel clashing with the postrevolutionary need for a new methodology for psychology, Vygotsky developed his Cultural Historical Theory. In presenting his new theory, Vygotsky attempted to resolve a fundamental ideological conflict between idealism and materialism. Furthermore, Vygotsky worked to create an effective new research method by drawing inspiration from Gestalt psychology, Hegel, Marx, and Engels. The result of Vygotsky's efforts was a theory based on psychology of consciousness and mind rather than a biology-based psychology focused entirely on analysis of stimuli and responses. In analyzing Vygotsky's theory, it is useful to draw inspiration from Vygotsky's criticism of pure empiricism, and to be inspired by Vygotsky's demonstration on how deeply rooted differences between societies may be bridged by finding unexpected commonalities within opposing ideologies. The global ecological crisis has posed unprecedented survival challenges to human being. Consequently, ecological issues have naturally become central concerns in philosophy. From the methodological perspective of constructive engagement in comparative philosophy, we have chosen to compare the ecological thoughts of two thinkers--Karl Marx and Lao Zi (...)--who are separated by vast spans of time and cultural tradition. We argue that Karl Marx holds a mild anthropocentric ecological view, while Lao Zi holds a transcendental ecological view. In addressing ecological issues, Lao Zi's transcendental methodological guiding principles can provide negative methodological constraints for Karl Marx's constructive ideals, while Karl Marx's constructive ideals can supplement Lao Zi's transcendental methodological guiding principles with positive practical strategies. The article argues that religion is a classic theme of sociology, present in the three founding fathers of the discipline, and in Simmel, although the latter is being revisited as a canon of the discipline. Initially, we explore religion in Marx's thought, beyond the famous phrase "the opium of the people". Then, we approach Durkheim and his search for the structures of religion, but we emphasize the limit of his understanding of the religious phenomenon linked to an institution, something that the concept of religiosity presented by Simmel can help in the understanding of contemporary phenomena, such as Young people without Religion in Brazil. Thorstein Veblen gave special importance to work. He claimed that once humans became tool users, their work activity was driven by an instinct of workmanship. This instinct is 'an object of attention and sentiment in its own right' beyond providing provisioning and serving another instinct, that of parental bent, or society's wellbeing. Given appropriate social institutions, 'labor might... assume that character of nobility in the eyes of society at large'. Yet, Veblen took little notice that during his lifetime between 1857 and 1929, the rapid industrialisation of the American economy massively proletarianised workers, greatly degrading their work experience. In Europe, this proletarianisation and degradation of the work process had begun centuries earlier with the rise of capitalism, and greatly accelerated with rapid industrialisation during Veblen's lifetime. Although Veblen addressed how capitalism, as the latest predatory society, exploited workers, he presented industrialisation of the work process as positive for workers. This article first surveys the process of proletarianisation, focussing on the American experience. It then explores Veblen's understanding of the impact of industrialisation on workers and how he missed a far-reaching labour-degrading process that was important in provoking massive violent insurrection, and which had earlier been addressed by political economists as diverse as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. Because he failed to recognise the degradation of the work process that accompanied industrialisation, he missed its contributing role in the explosion of conspicuous consumption by Americans of all classes, the subject of his most renowned work, The Theory of the Leisure Class. The effects of generating pulsed radiation by a long spark discharge are important for the development of lightning models and applications related to lightning protection. In experiments with a Marx generator simulating a lightning discharge, we detected the radiation in the form of a single ultrawideband electromagnetic pulse (UWB EMP) about 200 ps in duration, and rising time about 100 ps. UWB EMP generation occurs during the breakdown of a "rod–rod" 4 m long gap. Pulses of almost unipolar shape are observed in more than half of all positive discharges. EMP emission occurs before the main stage, and corresponds to the start of the upward leader from a grounded electrode. In negative discharges, pulses are also observed, but less frequently and with a smaller amplitude. The UWB EMPs, given their large amplitude (more than 100 V/m at a distance of 90 m from the discharge), can be considered as possible new lightning damage factors. Plain Language Summary: A Marx generator with an operating voltage of several megavolts is used to simulate a lightning stroke of a grounded object. The generation of a short electromagnetic pulse (several hundreds of picoseconds long) has been detected during a breakdown of a long air gap using special electromagnetic probes. Such a pulse is observed in the majority of positive discharges in the "rod–rod" gap. Subnanosecond pulse can be regarded as possible new damage factor of lightning strokes. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess clinical and functional outcomes in separate cohorts of operatively and nonoperatively managed pediatric patella fractures. Methods: A retrospective review was completed for patients aged 5–19 years treated for a unilateral patella fracture at a single pediatric level-1 trauma center. Patients were excluded for osteochondral fracture associated with patellar dislocation, polytrauma presentation with additional fractures, or <3 months of clinical follow-up. Functional outcomes were assessed via the Pediatric International Knee Documentation Committee form and the Marx Knee Activity Scale. Results: A total of 53 patients met inclusion criteria; 30 patients were treated operatively and 23 patients were treated nonoperatively. Patients with patellar sleeve/pole fractures were significantly younger by 5.2 years (p < 0.01) and presented with greater variability in mechanism of injury (p < 0.01). The nonoperative cohort achieved bony healing and returned to sports at a median (interquartile range) of 1.7 (1.2–2.3) months and 2.8 (2.3–3.3) months, respectively, post-injury. The operative group achieved bony healing and returned to sports at 2.8 (2.1–3.5) months and 5.9 (4.0–7.1) months, respectively, following surgery. Median (interquartile range) Pediatric International Knee Documentation Committee and Marx scores were 98 (89–100) and 14 (10–16), respectively, for the nonoperative group, and 92 (84–99) and 13 (12–16), respectively, for the operative group. No significant differences in patient-reported outcomes were observed between fracture patterns or treatment cohorts. Conclusion: Pediatric and adolescent patients sustaining patella fractures reported long-term functional outcomes comparable to normative values, across multiple fracture patterns and with appropriate operative and nonoperative treatment. Although the neglect of Marxism has been a pervasive characteristic of IR theory, there has been a marked revival of interest in Marxism. Marx's materialist insights into the general historical development of societies, as well as his critique of capitalism and political economy, have served as alternative starting points for different critical approaches to IR and offers a welcome alternative to neorealism, constructivism, and poststructuralism that have dominated IR for several decades. Marxism provides a redefinition of IR by focusing on changes in material circumstances, historical conditions, and society instead of assuming unchanging and fixed structures of anarchy or the state. Marx's analysis and insights into the dynamics of international relations have become even more important given the ongoing crisis of neoliberal capitalism, the rise of authoritarianism, right-wing nationalist populisms, and the racial and gendered subordinations accompanying them pointing to the importance of Marxifying IR and IRifying Marxism. The paper examines how theoretical misunderstandings of Karl Marx's theory of value have affected scholarly debates on sweatshops and labour-exploitation more broadly. Participants to these debates tend to overlook the distinction between the form of value and the substance of value. The paper further analyses problems with an exchange-based conceptualization of the labour-process, adopted by many sweatshop-defenders. Rather than posit Marx's own perspective as the exclusively correct position, this paper seeks to foster a more informed dialogue on the issue of labour-exploitation in global sweatshops. Only by adhering to the scientific concept of capital as explained by Marx in Capital, and by drawing a clear line between the two different views of capital based on materialist and idealist conceptions of history, can we understand the phenomenon of capital in the real economy of contemporary China. In the real economy of developing commodity production, public and private capital share some common features, but there are differences in their nature. The misunderstanding, created by Western bourgeois economics, of the relationship between public and private capital harms efforts to achieve a scientific regulation of the healthy development of various types of capital, and needs to be clarified. Where the practical work of regulating and guiding the healthy development of capital is concerned, great importance should be attached to restoring and guaranteeing the dominant position of public capital within social capital as a whole; to ensuring that state-owned capital effectively fulfills the dominant role; to strictly governing the otherwise disorderly development of private capital; to strengthening control over the quantity and quality of foreign capital introduced to the economy; and to keeping state-owned capital firmly in control of the national financial system. This article aims to illuminate temporality in value determination and stratification of value and price in the transformation of value into price. This leads to an understanding of value-relocating through the two concepts presented in this study: current-value-relocating (CVR) and integrated-value-relocating (IVR). Based on Marx's exploration of the labor process and social reproduction and focusing on two components of a commodity's value and the relation between the individual and aggregate level, the article seeks to propose a non-linear conception of temporality in value determination, which justifies the application of simultaneous equations in value determination. Furthermore, through the depiction of the stratification of value and price, the study insists on retaining the relations among their components in different layers. High voltage (HV) generators are used in multiple industrial and scientific facilities. Recent publications have demonstrated that triggering industrial thyristors (relatively slow switching devices) in overvoltage mode, also called impact ionization mode, significantly enhances their dU/dt and dI/dt characteristics. This novel triggering methodology necessitates the application of substantial overvoltage between the thyristor's anode and cathode, delivered with a swift slew rate exceeding 1 kV/ns. The adoption of compact pulse generators constructed from commercially available off-the-shelf components (COTS) opens up avenues for deploying this technology across various domains, including the implementation of high-speed kicker generators in particle accelerators. In our methodology, we employed commercially available high-voltage SiC MOSFETs along with a custom-designed fast gate driver. This driver was conceptualized based on the recent development of gate boosting techniques, featuring a driving voltage exceeding 600 V. The gate driver for these MOSFETs comprises three key components: a level-shifter with NMOS and PMOS transistors, a compact Marx generator with two avalanche transistors, and a GaN HEMT in a high input and low output impedance configuration. The proposed gate-boosting driver achieves a slew rate exceeding 1 kV/ns for the driving pulse. Furthermore, we demonstrate that with this driver, a  1.7  kV rated SiC MOSFET can produce an output pulse of  1.45  kV and a maximum slew rate of ≈ 2.5  kV/ns. This article seeks to reflect on the educational dimension of Social Work in social protection policy, which, although not an impossible mission, is quite complex and due to its multiple determinations, especially in the Angolan context. And the reflection arises from the interest in better understanding how it is effective in this reality, specifically in the Kuzola Children’s Home, starting from the logic of understanding universality to achieve (understand) the singularity, which is the Angolan territory our current space of intervention as a social worker. Even with limitations, this reflection was based on Marx’s theory of historical-dialectical materialism and is the result of a bibliographical and documentary research. The analysis indicates that the insertion of the social worker in the social protection policy, through the educational- pedagogical dimension, especially the emancipatory one, at the same time that it produces and reproduces the prevailing ideology, can provide a space to make the working class aware of the need for a continuous struggle for their rights and to break with this degrading system. undertaking a revolutionary break towards human emancipation. Rosenberg AA, Marx A, Bronstein AM (Codon-specific Ramachandran plots show amino acid backbone conformation depends on identity of the translated codon. Nat Commun. 2022:13:2815) recently found a surprising correlation between synonymous codon usage and the dihedral bond angles of the resulting amino acid. However, their analysis did not account for the strongest known correlate of codon usage: gene expression. We re-examined the relationship between bond angles and codon usage by applying the approach of Rosenberg et al. to simulated protein-coding sequences that (i) have random codon usage, (ii) codon usage determined by mutation biases, and (iii) maintain the general relationship between codon usage and gene expression via the assumption of selection-mutation-drift equilibrium. We observed correlations between dihedral bond angle and codon usage when codon usage is entirely random, indicating possible conflation of noise with differences in bond angle distributions between synonymous codons. More relevant to the general analysis of codon usage patterns, we found surprisingly good agreement between the analysis of the real sequences and the analysis of sequences simulated assuming selection-mutation-drift equilibrium, with 91% of significant synonymous codon pairs detected in the former were also detected in the latter. We believe the correlation between codon usage and dihedral bond angles resulted from the variation in codon usage across genes due to the interplay between mutation bias, natural selection for translation efficiency, and gene expression, further underscoring these factors must be controlled for when looking for novel patterns related to codon usage. A comparative analysis of the attachment efficacy of sharpened vs blunted air terminals under a strong background DC electric field, similar to conditions found in naturally occurring lightning events, is presented. Testing was conducted using an oil-free, 17-stage, 1.4 MV bipolar Marx generator with a biased discharge plane that emulated the conditions found prior to the lightning return stroke. The biased discharge plane allowed the introduction of a strong DC electric field and subsequent corona formation on a time scale much longer than the brief duration over which the downward leader propagates. Initial observations indicate that despite a higher background electric field at the sharpened terminals, leading to pre-discharge corona formation where none is seen on the blunt terminal, both the sharpened and blunted terminals exhibit similar attachment probabilities during discharge events, with some discharge events attaching to both terminals. The Estonian philosopher Rein Vihalemm (1938-2015) wished to reform realism in the philosophy of science. He was dissatisfied with the mainstream analytic philosophy of science--scientific realism and the various anti-realisms alike. He considered these approaches theory-driven and hence too distanced from actual scientific practice. His alternative, which he called practical realism, was inspired and influenced by Joseph Rouse's original reading of Thomas Kuhn. Moreover, Vihalemm viewed as important some lessons from Marxism, which was prevalent in Estonian philosophy during the Soviet occupation. For him, Marx himself inaugurated practical realism with his novel notion of practice that does not consider agency distinct from nature. He also mentions Kant, interpreted in a realistic manner, as a significant influence for his thesis that concepts only apply to practice. In this article, I will critically examine practical realism from the standpoint of classical pragmatism. My primary question is: what kind of realism practical realism can possibly be. This article investigates Marx's method in the analysis of the circuits of capital, as it is carried out in Capital vol. 2, in an attempt to clarify some key aspects of the well-known problem in Marxist literature on the relation between the logical and the historical. The central question on this topic is whether Marx's analysis is logical/structural or historical. The approach elaborated upon in this article extends beyond the one-sidedness of both views which deny any kind of correlation between logical and historical sequences and the views claiming that the articulation of Capital's argument exposes a set of historical stages. We will argue that dialectic, namely, the method of ascent from the abstract to the concrete, represents, first and foremost, the inner articulation of the structure of a given self-developing object, and at the same time implicitly represents its historical development. Hence, taking Marx's analysis of the circuits of capital as a case study, this article aspires to identify the fundamental movement of the systematic dialectic, which characterizes the entire Capital and explains the fundamental function of the relation between the logical and the historical. The publication of Marx's Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts (EPM) in German in 1933 immediately triggered off debate as to where the document fitted in Marx's theories generally. The obvious possibilities were first, that these writings could be dismissed as juvenilia, and that Marxism as understood by figures as diverse as Lenin, Kautsky, Bernstein, Rosa Luxemburg and Trotsky, none of whom said anything significant about alienation, could be studied and argued about while disregarding the EPM. Second, there were actually numerous reappearances of the theory of alienation in the writings of Marx after 1847, and the alienation theory must be very important in his mature writings. In what follows, I will argue the case for the unfashionable first alternative, but also be reviewing many of the arguments for and against continuity in Marx's work, hopefully making the article useful irrespective of which side one takes. In this article, an interpretation of Marx's notions of abstraction and concretization is presented. Unlike Leszek Nowak's approach, Marx's use of idealizations is not a reversible process of adding and removing idealizing assumptions. Marx had a richer use of the term abstraction, one in which concretization involves a creative moment of conceptual innovation. Marx adds new variables and new assumptions and elaborates new categories at different levels of abstraction in order to show the unity between appearances and essences. De-idealization, according to Marx, involves both recomposition and de-isolation. Also, concretization, for Marx, does not follow a linear approximation to reality, but rather a hermeneutical circle that is constantly in the process of reframing categories to provide answers to different questions. Inspired by a width invariant defined on permutations by Guillemot and Marx [SODA'14], we introduce the notion of twin-width on graphs and on matrices. Proper minor-closed classes, bounded rank-width graphs, map graphs, Kt -free unit d-dimensional ball graphs, posets with antichains of bounded size, and proper subclasses of dimension-2 posets all have bounded twin-width. On all these classes (except map graphs without geometric embedding) we show how to compute in polynomial time a sequence of d-contractions, witness that the twin-width is at most d. We show that FO model checking, that is deciding if a given first-order formula ϕ evaluates to true for a given binary structure G on a domain D, is FPT in |ϕ| on classes of bounded twin-width, provided the witness is given. More precisely, being given a d-contraction sequence for G, our algorithm runs in time f (d, |ϕ|) · |D| where f is a computable but non-elementary function. We also prove that bounded twin-width is preserved under FO interpretations and transductions (allowing operations such as squaring or complementing a graph). This unifies and significantly extends the knowledge on fixed-parameter tractability of FO model checking on non-monotone classes, such as the FPT algorithm on bounded-width posets by Gajarský et al. Materialist approaches to aesthetics historicize our sensuous capacities, orientations, and objects by attending to their ongoing production. This article begins by articulating capital not as an "economic" system but as a broader perceptual ecology that produces particular correspondences between subjects and the world. In response to the clear limits of ideology critique we argue that not only is capitalist ideology reproduced educationally but that pedagogical challenges to capital need to generate experiences with alternative collective perceptual realities that exist in the present. In our current conjuncture, such experiences are political insofar as they help rejuvenate the belief in the possibility and reality of revolutionary transformation. We offer the pedagogy of unlearning as one potential educational philosophy and practice that interrupts our inauguration into capital's sensuous regime. Moreover, we read Marx's Capital as a text that is guided by an aesthetic pedagogy to help us understand capital as a totality in shifting and partial ways and that, more importantly, produces a gap in the reader between our presumed sensuous certainty and other possible perceptual configurations. Few ideas have figured more centrally in the history of social theory than that of the division of labor. Here we ask whether conversational interaction, like other forms of social activity, exhibits a division of labor and, if so, what functions this serves and how it might be understood in relation to the theories of Marx and Durkheim. We begin by noting that, though conversational participants actively work to achieve and sustain understanding, much of the time this work is invisible and only its products are displayed in the form of sequentially fitted next turns at talk. However, in sequences of other-initiated repair, the work involved in the maintenance of intersubjectivity rises to the surface. On these occasions, we can see and thus describe what participants do to achieve and sustain what they take to be adequate understanding. In our data, which consist of video recordings of casual conversations among Vietnamese same-generation peers, participants continuously display an orientation to relations of relative seniority through the selection of terms used to accomplish interlocutor reference. This pervasive orientation is also reflected in practices of repair initiation. Specifically, seniors regularly initiate repair with so-called "open class" forms such as "huh?" and "ha?" which display a minimal grasp of the talk targeted, require little effort to produce and, at the same time, push responsibility for resolving the problem onto the trouble source speaker (i.e., the junior member of the dyad). In contrast, juniors often initiate repair of a senior participant's talk by displaying a detailed understanding of what has been said, either in the form of a repeat or a reformulation, and inviting the senior to confirm. We suggest then that this asymmetry in the distribution of initiation practices reflects a "division of intersubjective labor". We conclude with some thoughts on the theoretical implications of our findings and relate them not only to the theories of Marx and Durkheimbut also to the writings of feminist sociolinguists who sought to describe the way in which women seemto be burdenedmore thanmen with what Fishman called "interactional shitwork."
