Organ-on-Chips (OoCs) have emerged as a human-specific experimental platform for preclinical research and therapeutics testing that will reduce the cost of pre-clinical drug development, provide better physiological relevance and replace animal testing. Yet, the lack of standardization and cost-effective fabrication technologies can hamper wide-spread adoption of OoCs. In this work we validate the use of flat panel display (FPD) technology as an enabling and cost-effective technology platform for biomedical applications by demonstrating facile integration of key OoC modules like microfluidics and micro electrode arrays (MEAs) in the standardized 96-well plate format. Individual and integrated modules were tested for their biological applicability in OoCs. For microelectrode arrays we demonstrate 90–95% confluency, 3 days after cell seeding and >70% of the initial mitochondrial cell activity for microfluidic devices. Thus highlighting the biocompatibility of these modules fabricated using FPD technology. Furthermore, we provide two examples of monolithically integrated microfluidics and microelectronics, i.e. integrated electronic valves and integrated MEAs, that showcase the strength of FPD technology applied to biomedical device fabrication. Finally, the merits and opportunities provided by FPD technology are discussed through examples of advanced structures and functionalities that are unique to this enabling platform.

Going towards high-resolution, uniform displays with a high-brightness range requires optimizations on different topics. This work presents an overview on this subject. To achieve a good uniformity, a compensation method is proposed using a 2T1C pixel circuit, compatible with high-resolution requirements, improving uniformity by a factor 52.5. In order to further increase the achievable resolution, a new technology stack, using a planar and a vertical TFT is introduced. In this work, we demonstrate a capacitive coupled data transfer with flexible thin-film electronics using touchscreen as ubiquitous reader interface. The capacitive communication to the touchscreen is proven using a 64-bit metal-oxide thin-film capacitive-coupled identification tag. The tag is powered by a thin film battery or thin-film photovoltaic cell that is converting the light of the screen. The thin-film integrated tag has on-chip monolithic electrodes (0.8cm2), and the integrated circuit employs 409 transistors and dissipates only 140nW of power at 600mV supply voltage. The asynchronous data rate of the chip is up to 35bps, strictly limited by the touchscreen readout electronics.

Thanks to the improving performance of thin-film metal-oxide NFC tags and data processing chips on foil [1], [2], fabs are considering the large-scale production of flexible logic circuits. However, these systems require a memory, but metal-oxide technology lacks reliable, large memory arrays. Today, data storage is limited to ROMs, flipflops and SRAMs. No memory array has been demonstrated with sufficient storage capacity and speed within the typical power and area budget. High-resolution RGB organic light-emitting diode frontplane is a key enabler for direct-view transparent augmented reality displays. In this paper, we demonstrate 1250 ppi passive displays and semi-transparent active displays. Organic light-emitting diode photolithography can provide pixel density above 1000 ppi while keeping effective emission area high because of high aperture ratio. Patterns with 2 μm line pitch were successfully transferred to emission layers, indicating possible further pixel density scaling. Lifetime after patterning, key parameter enabling industrialization, is above 150 h (T90 at 1000 nit).

A novel external VT compensation method, using a simple driving scheme, is presented, enabling high resolution, yet uniform displays, regardless of the size. The uniformity can be maintained for initial VT nonuniformities as well as VT shifts occurring during operation, like bias stress. The characterized display area shows a significant reduction in current variation, transforming ~23% variation without compensation into 0.56% variation after calibration.

In this article we discuss the synthesis of four new low band-gap co-polymers based on the diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and benzotriazole (BTZ) monomer unit., In this article we discuss the synthesis of four new low band-gap co-polymers based on the diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and benzotriazole (BTZ) monomer unit. We demonstrate that the BTZ unit allows for additional solubilizing side-chains on the co-monomer and show that the introduction of a linear side-chain on the DPP-unit leads to an increase in thin-film order and charge-carrier mobility if a sufficiently solubilizing, branched, side chain is attached to the BTZ. We compare two different synthetic routes, direct arylation and Suzuki-polycondensation, by a direct comparison of polymers obtained via the two routes and show that direct arylation produces polymers with lower electrical performance which we attribute to a higher density of chain Furthermore we demonstrate that a polymer utilizing this design motif and synthesized via Suzuki-polycondensation ((l-C18)-DPP-(b-C17)-BTZ) exhibits exceptionally high and near balanced average electron and hole mobilities >2 cm2 V–1 s–1 which are among the highest, robustly extracted mobility values reported for DPP copolymers in a top-gate configuration to date. Our results demonstrate clearly that linear side chain substitution of the DPP unit together with co-monomers that allow for the use of sufficiently long or branched solubilizing side chains can be an attractive design motif for solution processable, high mobility DPP copolymers.

We report a combined Non-Equilibrium Green's Function - Density Functional Theory study of molecular junctions made of photochromic diarylethenes between gold electrodes. The impact of derivatization of the molecule on the transmission spectrum is assessed by introducing: (i) substituents on the diarylethene core; and (ii) linker substituents between the gold surface and the diarylethene. We illustrate that substituents on the core shift considerably the HOMO/LUMO level energies in gas phase but do not change the I-V characteristics of the molecular junctions; this behaviour has been rationalized by establishing links between the transmission spectrum and interfacial electronic reorganization upon chemisorption. In contrast, the different linker substituents under study modulate the conductivity of the junction by changing the degree of orbital hybridization with the metallic electrodes and the degree of orbital polarization.

The ultimate target of molecular electronics is to combine different types of functional molecules into integrated circuits, preferably through an autonomous self-assembly process. Charge transport through self-assembled monolayers has been investigated previously, but problems remain with reliability, stability and yield, preventing further progress in the integration of discrete molecular junctions. Here we present a technology to simultaneously fabricate over 20,000 molecular junctions-each consisting of a gold bottom electrode, a self-assembled alkanethiol monolayer, a conducting polymer layer and a gold top electrode-on a single 150-mm wafer. Their integration is demonstrated in strings where up to 200 junctions are connected in series with a yield of unity. The statistical analysis on these molecular junctions, for which the processing parameters were varied and the influence on the junction resistance was measured, allows for the tentative interpretation that the perpendicular electrical transport through these monolayer junctions is factorized.

The focus of this chapter is to consider additional functionalities beyond the regular display function of an active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display. We will discuss how to improve the resolution of the array with OLED lithography pushing to AR/VR standards. Also, the chapter will give an insight into pixel design and layout with a strong focus on high resolution, enabling open areas in pixels for additional functionalities. An example of such additional functionalities would be to include a photodetector in pixel, requiring the need to include in-panel TFT readout at the peripherals of the full-display sensor array for applications such as finger and palmprint sensing.
