Abstract

The idea of a multiverse -- an ensemble of universes or universe domains -- has received increasing attention in cosmology, both as the outcome of the originating process that generated our own universe, and as an explanation for why our universe appears to be fine-tuned for life and consciousness. Here we carefully consider how multiverses should be defined, stressing the distinction between the collection of all possible universes, and ensembles of really existing universes, which are essential for an anthropic argument. We show that such realised multiverses are by no means unique, and in general require the existence of a well-defined and physically motivated distribution function on the space of all possible universes. Furthermore, a proper measure on these spaces is also needed, so that probabilities can be calculated. We then discuss several other major physical and philosophical problems which arise in the context of ensembles of universes, including the emergence and causal effectiveness of self-consciousness, realized infinities, and fine- tuning, or the apparent need for very special initial conditions for our universe -- whether they or generalized generic primordial conditions are more fundamental. Then we briefly summarise scenarios like chaotic inflation, which suggest how ensembles of universe domains may be generated, and point out that the regularities which must underlie any systematic description of truly disjoint multiverses must imply some kind of common generating mechanism. Abstract

The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic - eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored - from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation - are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

A heterogeneous source of several chlorine oxides, in particular OCIO and CICIO2, from CIO radicals passed over water-ice surfaces at low pressures is demonstrated. CIO radicals are generated in a flow system and reaction products are monitored by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and time-of-flight mass spectrometry using electron-impact and resonance-enhanced mulitphoton ionization, respectively.

Abstract

Soot samples from a spark generator, a flame and a diesel passenger car were collected and investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy mounting on 10 cm vacuum cell connected to a standard flow system with He as carrier gas. The reaction probability on diesel engine soot was of slower magnitude and the reaction of soot with NO2 cannot account for the HONO levels observed in urban air.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE--To assess the effects of three different antianginal drugs on heart rate, blood pressure, and heart rate variability. DESIGN--Randomised, single blind, placebo controlled, cross over study. SETTING--University hospital. PARTICIPANTS--Nine healthy male volunteers. INTERVENTIONS--Oral administration of either 50 mg gallopamil, 20 mg nifedipine, 100 mg metoprolol, or placebo according to a random crossover plan. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Time intervals between consecutive R waves in electrocardiograms measured with an accuracy of 5 ms from digital Holter recordings. Blood pressure monitored continuously by finger plethysmography. RESULTS--Metoprolol lowered heart rate from 62(6) to 51(5) beats/min (p = 0.003) after 78(23) minutes. Nifedipine provoked reflex tachycardia from 56(5) to 94(18) beats/min (p < 0.001) at 10(3) minutes after treatment followed by an exponential decline in heart rate to baseline values with a time constant of 34(7) min in seven subjects but 83 minutes in one volunteer. One subject showed no exponential decline in heart rate. Nifedipine significantly lowered the supine mean arterial pressure from 86(6) to 67(6) mm Hg (p = 0.004) after 11(2) minutes, indicating an acute reduction in arterial resistance. Gallopamil did not significantly change mean heart rate or blood pressure. In the sitting position three hours after administration gallopamil and metoprolol significantly lowered power spectral density in the low frequency band (0.03 Hz to 0.15 Hz) compared with placebo (p < 0.05). Nifedipine did not produce such an effect. CONCLUSIONS--Gallopamil and metoprolol both inhibit cardiac sympathetic activation compared with placebo, whereas nifedipine causes reflex sympathetic activation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

20. Mechanism and Kinetics of the Reactions of NO<INF>2</INF> or HNO<INF>3</INF> with Alumina as a Mineral Dust Model Compound

Abstract

The reaction of alumina as a model substance for mineral aerosols with NO2 or HNO3 was studied using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The formation of nitrate on the Al2O3 surface was observed in both cases. In addition, during the initial phase of the NO2 reaction, intermediate nitrite formation was observed. The DRIFTS data provide insight into the reaction mechanism, which involves reaction of surface OH groups, the formation of a {AlOOH···NO2} adduct, and the formation of acidic OH groups. The reaction order in NO2 of 1.86 ± 0.1 was determined from a quantitative kinetic evaluation of a series of experiments with NO2 concentrations in the range of 1013 to 1015 molecules cm-3. The reactive uptake coefficient, γ, was determined from the infrared absorbance, which was calibrated by ion chromatography, and from the Al2O3 Brunauer−Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. γ depended linearly on the NO2 concentration and varied from γ = 7.3 × 10-10 to 1.3 × 10-8 for [NO2] = 2.5 × 1013 to 8.5 × 1014 molecules cm-3. Estimations of the atmospheric impact showed that at these above conditions (γ = 10-9) nitrate formation on mineral aerosol from the NO2 reaction would be negligible.

Abstract

The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

A novel phenol hydroxylase (PheA) that catalyzes the first step in the degradation of phenol in Bacillus thermoglucosidasius A7 is described. The two-protein system, encoded by the pheA1 and pheA2 genes, consists of an oxygenase (PheA1) and a flavin reductase (PheA2) and is optimally active at 55 degrees C. PheA1 and PheA2 were separately expressed in recombinant Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) pLysS cells and purified to apparent homogeneity. The pheA1 gene codes for a protein of 504 amino acids with a predicted mass of 57.2 kDa. PheA1 exists as a homodimer in solution and has no enzyme activity on its own. PheA1 catalyzes the efficient ortho-hydroxylation of phenol to catechol when supplemented with PheA2 and FAD/NADH. The hydroxylase activity is strictly FAD-dependent, and neither FMN nor riboflavin can replace FAD in this reaction. The pheA2 gene codes for a protein of 161 amino acids with a predicted mass of 17.7 kDa. PheA2 is also a homodimer, with each subunit containing a highly fluorescent FAD prosthetic group. PheA2 catalyzes the NADH-dependent reduction of free flavins according to a Ping Pong Bi Bi mechanism. PheA2 is structurally related to ferric reductase, an NAD(P)H-dependent reductase from the hyperthermophilic Archaea Archaeoglobus fulgidus that catalyzes the flavin-mediated reduction of iron complexes. However, PheA2 displays no ferric reductase activity and is the first member of a newly recognized family of short-chain flavin reductases that use FAD both as a substrate and as a prosthetic group.
