Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. This review demonstrates the unique role of the neutrino by discussing in detail the physics of and with neutrinos. We deal with neutrino sources, neutrino oscillations, absolute masses, interactions, the possible existence of sterile neutrinos, and theoretical implications. To deliver on the promise of next generation gravitational-wave observatories, a sustained and coordinated detector research and development program is required. This report examines in detail the wide range of nearer- and longer-term detector R&D programs needed for next generation GW detectors commensurate with the key science targets presented in "The Next Generation Global Gravitational Wave Observatory: The Science Book", including considerations of site selection and large-scale vacuum infrastructure. The report makes a series of detailed recommendations on the needed advances in detector technology and the timescales needed to achieve those advances. It also identifies areas where larger-scale globally coordinated R&D efforts will be critical to ensuring success while minimizing costs. The next generation of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors will observe coalescences of black holes and neutron stars throughout the cosmos, thousands of them with exceptional fidelity. The Science Book is the result of a 3-year effort to study the science capabilities of networks of next generation detectors. Such networks would make it possible to address unsolved problems in numerous areas of physics and astronomy, from Cosmology to Beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, and how they could provide insights into workings of strongly gravitating systems, astrophysics of compact objects and the nature of dense matter. It is inevitable that observatories of such depth and finesse will make new discoveries inaccessible to other windows of observation. In addition to laying out the rich science potential of the next generation of detectors, this report provides specific science targets in five different areas in physics and astronomy and the sensitivity requirements to accomplish those science goals. The construction of a global network of detectors is the cornerstone to scientific success for 3rd generation gravitational wave astronomy. If carried out with a vision to the future, the third generation implementation, in its infrastructure, technology base and governance can provide the point of departure for subsequent developments beyond the third generation, a path to the long and revolutionary future of gravitational wave astrophysics. The goal of this document is to lay out considerations that influence the optimal choice of governance and to lay out a possible path that can lead the community to an optimal governance model. Planning for the development of a 3rd generation global gravitational-wave detector array is a multifaceted and complex effort that will necessarily need a high level of community input. Interfacing to extant and new stakeholders in the broader scientific constituencies is necessary to keep them aware of the activities taking place in the ground-based gravitational-wave community and receive input to inform and evolve the planning. In this report, we present the approaches GWIC and gravitational-wave collaborations and projects should consider taking to engage with broader community. Cyber infrastructure will be a critical consideration in the development of next generation gravitational-wave detectors. The demand for data analysis computing in the 3G era will be driven by the high number of detections as well as the expanded search parameter space for compact astrophysical objects and the subsequent parameter estimation follow-up required to extract the nature of the sources. Additionally, there will be an increased need to develop appropriate and scalable computing cyberinfrastructure, including data access and transfer protocols, and storage and management of software tools, that have sustainable development, support, and management processes. This report identifies the major challenges and opportunities facing 3G gravitational-wave observatories and presents recommendations for addressing them. The first direct detection of gravitational waves emitted from a pair of merging black holes in 2015 has been heralded as one of most significant scientific breakthroughs in physics and astronomy of the 21st century. Motivated by the tremendous scientific opportunities now opened by gravitational-wave observatories and recognizing that to fully exploit the new field will require new observatories that may take 15 to 20 years from conception until operations begin, the Gravitational Wave International Committee (GWIC) convened a subcommittee to examine the path to build and operate a network of future ground-based observatories, capable of extending the observational GW horizon well beyond that currently attainable with the current generation of detectors. We developed a soft and high thermal conductive heat link for cryogenic applications. The measured maximum thermal conductivity was approximately 18500 W/m/K at 10 K. This spring constant was 1/43 of that of a single thick wire with the same cross-sectional area at room temperature. We realized these performances by utilizing high purity aluminum (99.9999 %, 6N) and by stranding many thin wires that are 0.15 mm in diameter. The electrical Residual Resistivity Ratio (RRR) was also measured and used to estimate the thermal conductivity by Wiedemann-Franz law. We observed the size effect on the electrical conductivity, and evaluated the effect of mechanical deformation to the RRR. These evaluations allow us to design a pragmatic heat link for cryogenic application., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Detuning the signal-recycling cavity length from a cavity resonance significantly improves the quantum noise beyond the standard quantum limit, while there is no km-scale gravitational-wave detector successfully implemented the technique. The detuning technique is known to introduce great excess noise, and such noise can be reduced by a laser modulation system with two Mach-Zehnder interferometers in series. This modulation system, termed Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM), also makes the control of the gravitational-wave detector more robust by introducing the third modulation field which is non-resonant in any part of the main interferometer. On the other hand, mirror displacements of the Mach-Zehnder interferometers arise a new kind of noise source coupled to the gravitational-wave signal port. KAGRA is a 3-km cryogenic interferometric gravitational wave telescope located at an underground site in Japan. In order to achieve its target sensitivity, the relative positions of the mirrors of the interferometer must be finely adjusted with attached actuators. We have developed a model to simulate the length control loops of the KAGRA interferometer with realistic suspension responses and various noises for mirror actuation. Using our model, we have designed the actuation parameters to have sufficient force range to acquire lock as well as to control all the length degrees of freedom without introducing excess noise., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures (typo in p.12 on magnetic field gradient fixed for v3)

We present the calculation of the atmospheric neutrino fluxes with an interaction model named JAM, which is used in PHITS (Particle and Heavy-Ion Transport code System). The JAM interaction model agrees with the HARP experiment a little better than DPMJET-III. After some modifications, it reproduces the muon flux below 1~GeV/c at balloon altitudes better than the modified-DPMJET-III which we used for the calculation of atmospheric neutrino flux in previous works. The discovery potentials of non-standard physics (NSP) which might be possessed by neutrinos are examined by taking a concrete setting of Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea (T2KK) two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC. We restrict ourselves into \nu_{\mu} and \bar{\nu}_{\mu} disappearance measurement. We describe here only the non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter and the quantum decoherence. It is shown in some favorable cases T2KK can significantly improve the current bounds on NSP. The Kamioka-Korea two detector system is a powerful experimental setup for resolving neutrino parameter degeneracies and probing CP violation in neutrino oscillation. In this paper, we study sensitivities of this same setup to several nonstandard neutrino physics such as quantum decoherence, tiny violation of Lorentz symmetry, and nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with matter. In most cases, the Kamioka-Korea two-detector setup is more sensitive than the one-detector setup, except for the Lorentz symmetry violation with CPT violation, and the nonstandard neutrino interactions with matter. It can achieve significant improvement on the current bounds on nonstandard neutrino physics., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We have shown in a previous paper that two identical detectors with each fiducial mass of 0.27 megaton water, one in Kamioka and the other in Korea, which receive the (anti-) muon neutrino beam of 4 MW power from J-PARC facility have potential of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and discovering CP violation by resolving the degeneracies associated with them. In this paper, we point out that the same setting has capability of resolving the \theta_{23} octant degeneracy in region where sin^2 2\theta_{23} \lsim 0.97 at 2 standard deviation confidence level even for very small values of \theta_{13}. Altogether, it is demonstrated that one can solve all the eight-fold neutrino parameter degeneracies in situ by using the Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea setting if \theta_{13} is within reach by the next generation superbeam experiments. We also prove the property called ``decoupling between the degeneracies'', which is valid to first order in perturbation theory of the earth matter effect, that guarantees approximate independence between analyses to solve any one of the three different type of degeneracies., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

We explore the possibility of simultaneous determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and the CP violating phase by using two identical detectors placed at different baseline distances. We focus on a possible experimental setup using neutrino beam from J-PARC facility in Japan with beam power of 4MW and megaton (Mton)-class water Cherenkov detectors, one placed in Kamioka and the other at somewhere in Korea. We demonstrate, under reasonable assumptions of systematic uncertainties, that the two-detector complex with each fiducial volume of 0.27 Mton has potential of resolving neutrino mass hierarchy up to sin^2 2theta_{13} > 0.03 (0.055) at 2\sigma (3\sigma) CL for any values of delta and at the same time has the sensitivity to CP violation by 4 + 4 years running of nu_e and nu_e-bar appearance measurement. The significantly enhanced sensitivity is due to clean detection of modulation of neutrino energy spectrum, which is enabled by cancellation of systematic uncertainties between two identical detectors which receive the neutrino beam with the same energy spectrum in the absence of oscillations., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, version published in PRD

We point out that determination of the MNS matrix element |U_{e3}| = s_{13} in long-baseline \nu_{\mu} \to \nu_e neutrino oscillation experiments suffers from large intrinsic uncertainty due to the unknown CP violating phase \delta and sign of \Delta m^2_{13}. We propose a new strategy for accurate determination of $\theta_{13}$; tune the beam energy at the oscillation maximum and do the measurement both in neutrino and antineutrino channels. New atmospheric neutrino results from Super-Kamiokande are presented. Results from Kamiokande on upward going muons are also presented. All these data, together with the Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data give evidence for neutrino oscillations.
