The atomizer is a crucial component in spray columns used in mass transfer applications. Proper function of the atomizer can enhance mass transfer and reduce sorbent evaporation and droplet drift (physical loss). Commonly used atomizers for spray column application suffer from excessive droplet drift and high spray polydispersity. Flat fan sprays were beneficially used to reduce droplet drift in agricultural applications and in studies dealing with CO2 capture. Six 3D printed flat fan atomizers with different internal channel geometry (elliptical, cone-shaped) were tested at four inlet pressures in this study. The liquid sheet breakup length and spray cone angle derived from high-speed visualization are compared for each atomizer design. No systematic difference was found between the elliptical and cone-shaped channels. The spray cone angle and breakup length were corelated only with experimental regimes (Reynolds number and Weber number). Perforations were responsible for the breakup of the liquid sheet at lower injection pressures, whereas the combined effect of perforations and waves dominated the liquid sheet breakup at higher injection pressures.

With recent advance in print resolution of stereo lithography (SLA) 3D printers, a cheap and fast prototyping method of many industrial components is available. This paper examines the limits of the low- end SLA printer with a pixel resolution of 35 μm for the prototyping of pressure-swirl atomizers. Several differently sized atomizers with exit orifice diameter in range from 0.3 to 1.2 mm were produced with all dimensions evenly scaled. The circularity of the exit orifices was inspected by an optical microscope. Atomizers were operated under the same Reynolds numbers, which were selected to cover a pressure range between 4 and 10 bar for the smallest atomizer. The generated spray was observed with a high-speed camera. The discharge coefficient, spray cone angle (SCA) and circumferential liquid distribution were compared. Even the atomizer with 0.46 mm exit orifice produced a decent spray, almost comparable to the machined version. The discharge coefficient was slightly dependent on the size of the atomizer up to the exit orifice of 0.6 mm with the indices to print inaccuracies.

Respimat soft mist inhaler (SMI) is an inhaler producing a soft mist with low velocity. The liquid drug solution is emitted by the mechanical energy of compressed spring, so the device is propellant-free. This paper describes the measurement of particle fraction penetrating through the model of the upper respiratory tract (mouth cavity, pharynx, larynx trachea). The solution inside the cartridge was marked by fluorescein in order to evaluate the regional particle deposition in the model. After the exposition, segments of the model, as well as the filter, were washed out and the deposited fluorescein was extracted into water. The analysis showed that the fraction of particles penetrating through the upper respiratory tract was 64.7±6.7 %. However, the real inhalation pattern was not simulated and measurement was provided with continual “inhalation” without “exhalation”.

Laser diagnostics techniques are widely used in experimental fluid mechanics. By far the most widely used systems for getting spatial velocity fields and turbulence data are laser Doppler anemometers (LDA). Further, in the cases of two-phase flows phase Doppler analysers (PDA) are typically chosen to measure the size and velocity of the droplets or bubbles. The PDA system is non-intrusive laser technique with high spatial and temporal resolution. Moreover, the PDA system does not require additional calibration as, for example, hot-wire anemometers. However, with a growing number of PDA users, there is a need for verification of the results among the workplaces and systems themselves. The current paper deals with the comparison of two fibre-based PDA systems. The main scope of the investigation is an evaluation of the system's age and the influence of lasers type. One of the systems is older, operated with Argon-Ion laser and the second one is brand new equipped with Diode-pumped solid-state lasers. Both have the same optics and were manufactured by the same company. Various properties of the PDA system are tested to show particular influence on the quality of results when measuring in a spray generated by a small air-blast atomizer.

Inhaled fibres can potentially cause inflammation of the lung tissue and interstitium which, after long-term exposure, may lead to lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma or pulmonary and pleural fibrosis. For risk reduction and correct setting of occupational hygiene regulations, it is important to be able to precisely calculate the fate of inhaled fibres depending on their physical characteristics and inhalation conditions. As there is a lack of experimental data on the orientation of fibres, a new test rig has been assembled for visualization and recording of flowing fibres in a replica of the human trachea. Fibres prepared from regular glass fibres produced commercially for blown thermal insulation have been processed, dispersed and introduced into the glass tube with dimensions of the trachea. Visualization was performed using a powerful LED light and a high-speed camera. Angles of the fibres have been evaluated for six different flowrates and the dependence of the angles on the flow Reynolds number was searched for. The angles of fibres agreed with expected values, i.e. only vertically and horizontally oriented fibres were recorded. However, the number of vertically and horizontally oriented fibres did not seem to be correlated with the flow Reynolds number.

A Monte Carlo simulation of Phase Doppler systems has been developed. It consists of three sections, the droplet flow description, generation of the photomultiplier signals and then their processing to determine droplet velocities and the time shift between the signals from the three scattered light detection apertures. With highly realistic Doppler bursts being simulated and processed, the question arises as to whether the signal processing software could be used to process ‘real-world’ experimental signals. In a preliminary assessment of its capabilities in such a situation, actual spray Doppler signals (from a Dantec fibre-based PDA system with a BSA signal processor) were recorded and used as input to the software signal processor. The signals from the three photomultipliers were input first into a Picoscope and then into the BSA processor. In this way droplet velocities and size estimates would be available from the BSA as control data. The signal outputs were taken as csv files, and input directly into the software signal processor. Initially the software determined the time location of the centre of each signal burst envelop. This approach was shown to measure signal delays from single cycle to multiple cycles. For this experiment, the software was modified by adding a zero-crossing approach to measure the single cycle delays. The introduction of this method should establish the accuracy of the complete software package in the real world as the results from the preliminary experiment show good agreement between the two techniques.

Both pulmonary airway geometry and breathing pattern evolve from birth to adulthood. These gradual changes significantly influence airflow dynamics and subsequently particle transport and deposition. Regarding the airway structure, the differences between infants and adults are most profound till 5 years of age. Since that age the child airway geometry can be downsized from adult lungs. The objective of the present work was to investigate airflow patterns in child airways. The digital model of male respiratory airways was downsized to dimensionally correspond to a 5–year old child. Airflow simulations with properly validated RANS k–ω turbulence model were performed under steady inhalation boundary conditions. The inspiratory flow rate was 12.5 L/min. The velocity profiles just upstream of the first bifurcation were validated by Laser–Doppler anemometry (LDA) experiments. A replica of the same geometry as the one used in the simulation was 3D printed and part of the trachea was replaced by a glass tube. LDA measurements in several points upstream of the first bifurcation were carried out. The validated flow patterns were compared to the ones obtained in adult lungs.

The ability to precisely predict the fate of inhaled fibres is important for toxicologists as well as for pharmaceutists struggling to utilize fibres as carriers of a medication. However, the complexity of fibre movement in human airways still represents a significant challenge for programmers of codes for simulation of fibre flow. This conference contribution introduces the theoretical equations of fibre motion which can be used for calculation of the fate of inhaled fibres, and also, in the second part, first results of high-speed camera recorded trajectories of fibres downstream of a realistic human airway bifurcation are presented as an illustration of the real behaviour of fibres in the lungs.

This paper compares 2D axisymmetric and 3D numerical models used to predict the internal flow of a pressure-swirl atomizer using a commercial software Ansys Fluent 18.1. The computed results are compared with experimental data in terms of spray cone angle (SCA), discharge coefficient (CD), internal air-core dimensions and swirl velocity profile. The swirl velocity was experimentally studied using a Laser Doppler Anemometry in a scaled transparent model of the atomizer. The internal air-core was visualized at high temporal and spatial resolution by a high-speed camera with backlit illumination. The internal flow was numerically treated as transient two-phase flow. The gas-liquid interface was captured with Volume of Fluid scheme. The numerical solver used both laminar and turbulent approach. Turbulence was modelled using k-ε, k-ω, Reynolds Stress model (RSM) and coarse Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The laminar solver was capable to predict all the parameters with an error less than 5% compared with the experimental results in both 2D and 3D simulation. However, it overpredicted the velocity of the discharged liquid sheet. The LES model performed similarly to the laminar solver, but the liquid sheet velocity was 10% lower. The two-equation models k-ε and k-ω overpredicted the turbulence viscosity and the internal air-core was not predicted.

Particles exposed to an electric field experience forces that influence their movement. This effect can be used for filtration of air, or for size classification of aerosols. The motion of charged particles in a non-uniform electric field is called electrophoresis. Two processes are involved in this phenomenon: 1) charging of particles and 2) electrical mobility separation. If fibres are exposed to electrophoresis, they are separated on the basis of two parameters: diameter and length. Regrettably, as naturally occurring fibres are polydisperse both in diameter and length, the electrophoresis is not very efficient in length classification. In contrast, dielectrophoresis is the motion of electrically neutral particles in a non-uniform electric field due to the induced charge separation within the particles. As deposition velocity of fibres induced by dielectrophoretic force strongly depends on length and only weakly on diameter, it can be used for efficient length classification. Principles of length classification of conducting and non-conducting fibres are presented together with design of a fibre classifier. Lastly, images of motion of fibres recorded by high-speed camera are depicted.

Inhalers are hand-held devices which are used for administration of therapeutic aerosols via inhalation. Nebulizers are larger devices serving for home and hospital care using inhaled medication. This contribution describes the basic principles of dispersion of aerosol particles used in various types of inhalers and nebulizers, and lists the basic physical mechanisms contributing to the deposition of inhaled particles in the human airways. The second part of this article presents experimental setup, methodology and preliminary results of particle size distributions produced by several selected inhalers and nebulizers.

The efficiency of drug delivery administered by inhalation depends, among other factors, such as size and shape of aerosol particles, significantly also on the flow in the airways. As many lung diseases change both the breathing pattern and the shape of airways, we focus in this study on the influence of several selected diseases on the distribution of flow between the lung lobes and on changes the diseases induce on the course of flowrate. First, we present results of a literature survey focused on the published records of pathological breathing patterns. In the second part, we describe the newly designed breathing simulator and the implementation of the patterns into it. The last part is focused on the experimental verification of fidelity of the simulated breathing patterns.

The presence of aerosol deposition hot-spots in human airways presumably contributes to development of various diseases. The overall aerosol deposition in human lungs can be predicted with sufficient accuracy nowadays. However, the prediction of localized aerosol deposition poses arduous challenge, namely in diseased lungs. Numerical simulation is considered to be a promising tool for the successful prediction. Yet, the validation of such simulations is difficult to perform, as not enough experimental data acquired using realistic airway replicas is available. This paper presents a first comparison of localized deposition measurement and simulation performed on the identical realistic geometry. The analysis indicates that both approaches yield similar results for low Reynolds number flows.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become very popular recently because they are marketed as a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking and as a useful tool to smoking cessation. E-cigarettes use a heating element to create an aerosol from a solution usually consisting of propylene glycol, glycerol, and nicotine. Despite the wide spread of e-cigarettes, information about aerosol size distributions is rather sparse. This can be caused by the relative newness of e-cigarettes and by the difficulty of the measurements, in which one has to deal with high concentration aerosol containing volatile compounds. Therefore, we assembled an experimental setup for size measurements of e-cigarette aerosol in conjunction with a piston based machine in order to simulate a typical puff. A TSI scanning mobility particle sizer 3936 was employed to provide information about particle concentrations and sizes. An e-cigarette commercially available on the Czech Republic market was tested and the results were compared with a conventional tobacco cigarette. The particles emitted from the e-cigarette were smaller than those of the conventional cigarette having a CMD of 150 and 200 nm. However, the total concentration of particles from e-cigarette was higher.

Presented paper focuses on spraying of two viscous liquids (μ = 60 and 143 mPa·s) by two types of twinfluid atomizers with internal mixing. We compared the well-known Y-jet atomizer with the less known, “outside in liquid” (OIL), configuration of the effervescent atomizer. The required liquid viscosity was achieved by using the water-maltodextrin solutions of different concentrations. Both the liquids were sprayed at two gas inlet pressures (Δp = 0.14 and 0.28 MPa) and various gas-to-liquid ratios (GLR = 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20%). The comparison was focused on four characteristics: liquid flow-rate (for the same working regimes, defined by Δp and GLR), internal flow regimes, Weber numbers of a liquid breakup (We) and droplet sizes. A high-speed camera and Malvern Spraytec laser diffraction system were used to obtain necessary experimental data. Comparing the results of our experiments, we can state that for both the liquids the OIL atomizer reached higher liquid flow-rates at corresponding working regimes, it was typical by annular internal flow and higher We in the near-nozzle region at all the working regimes. As a result, it produced considerably smaller droplets than the second tested atomizing device, especially for GLR < 10%.

Correct definition of boundary conditions is crucial for the appropriate simulation of a flow. It is a common practice that simulation of sufficiently long upstream entrance section is performed instead of experimental investigation of the actual conditions at the boundary of the examined area, in the case that the measurement is either impossible or extremely demanding. We focused on the case of a benchmark channel with ventilation outlet, which models a regular automotive ventilation system. At first, measurements of air velocity and turbulence intensity were performed at the boundary of the examined area, i.e. in the rectangular channel 272.5 mm upstream the ventilation outlet. Then, the experimentally acquired results were compared with results obtained by numerical simulation of further upstream entrance section defined according to generally approved theoretical suggestions. The comparison showed that despite the simple geometry and general agreement of average axial velocity, certain difference was found in the shape of the velocity profile. The difference was attributed to the simplifications of the numerical model and the isotropic turbulence assumption of the used turbulence model. The appropriate recommendations were stated for the future work.

A separation of the flow region from the surroundings is an essential step in the analysis of smoke visualization images. The separation can be performed using several detection methods from the image segmentation group. This paper deals with the border detection of the air flow downstream of a benchmark automotive vent using different threshold-based detection methods. An assessment of the methods on the basis of the resulting image quality is also addressed. The quality level depends on the quantity and brightness of disturbances in the background area. The disturbance is usually an isolated region of smoke, which naturally cannot be a part of the flow. Three representative images of different quality levels were selected for the detection, and three methods were used for the evaluation. Each of the methods was used to determine the threshold differently (by the level, by the ratio, and by the change of brightness). It is demonstrated that the change-based method with an appropriately selected parameter is the most convenient for images with the worst quality level while level- and ratio-based methods are only applicable for images of good quality.

Measurement of velocity in human lungs during breathing cycle is a challenging task for researchers, since the measuring location is accessible only with significant difficulties. A special measuring rig consisting of optically transparent replica of human lungs, breathing simulator, particle generator and Laser-Doppler anemometer was developed and used for investigation of the velocity in specific locations of lungs during simulated breathing cycle. Experiments were performed on two different replicas of human lungs in corresponding measuring points to facilitate the analysis of the influence of the geometry and its simplification on the flow. The analysis of velocity course and turbulence intensity revealed that special attention should be devoted to the modelling of vocal cords position during breathing, as the position of laryngeal jet created by vocal cords significantly influences velocity profiles in trachea. The shapes of velocity courses during expiration proved to be consistent for both replicas; however magnitudes of peak expiratory velocity differ between the corresponding measuring points in both the replicas.

The article deals with a numerical simulation and its verification by experiments in the trachea of idealized geometry of tracheobronchial airways by using unsteady RANS method. The breathing cycle was simulated by sinusoidal function with period of 4 seconds and tidal volume of 0.5 litres of air, which corresponds to breathing during resting condition. Results were compared with experiments measured by laser-Doppler velocimeter in eight points of four cross sections in the trachea. Model consists of the mouth cavity, larynx and tracheobronchial tree down to fourth generation of branching.

Passenger comfort in cars depends on appropriate function of the cabin HVAC system. A great attention is therefore paid to the effective function of automotive vents and proper formation of the flow behind the ventilation outlet. The article deals with the visualization of air flow from the automotive benchmark vent. The visualization was made for two different shapes of the inlet channel connected to the benchmark vent. The smoke visualization with the laser knife was used. The influence of the shape of the inlet channel to the airflow direction, its enlargement and position of air flow axis were investigated.

It seems to be very convenient to receive a medicine by inhalation instead of injection. Unfortunately transport of particles and targeted delivery of a drug in human respiratory airways is very complicated task. Therefore we carried out experiments and tested different methods for evaluation of particle deposition in a model of human lungs. The model included respiratory airways from oral cavity to 7th generation of branching. Particles were dispersed by TSI Small-scale Powder Disperser 3433 and delivered to the model. The model was disassembled into segments after the deposition of the particles and local deposition was measured. Two methods were used to analyse the samples, fluorescence spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The first method was based on measuring the intensity of luminescence, which represented the particle deposition. The second method used the optical microscope with phase-contrast objective. A dispersion of isopropanol and particles was filtrated using a vacuum filtration unit, a filter was placed on glass slide and made transparent. The particles on the filter were counted manually and the deposition was calculated afterwards. The results of the methods were compared and both methods proved to be useful.

In the present work, global as well as spatially resolved parameters of a spray produced by a pressure-swirl atomizer are obtained. Small pressure-swirl atomizer for aircraft combustion chambers was run on a newly designed test bench with Jet A-1 kerosene type aviation fuel. The atomizer was tested in four regimes based on typical operation conditions of the engine. Spray characteristics were studied using two optical measurement systems, Particle Image velocimetry (PIV) and Phase-Doppler Particle Analyzer (P/DPA). The results obtained with P/DPA include information about Sauter Mean Diameter of droplets and spray velocity profiles in one plane perpendicular to the spray axis. Velocity magnitudes of droplets in an axial section of the spray were obtained using PIV. The experimental outputs also show a good confirmation of velocity profiles obtained with both instruments in the test plane. These data together will elucidate impact of the spray quality on the whole combustion process, its efficiency and exhaust gas emissions.
