Abstract

We use a neural network approach to explore the inverse problem of Bloch oscillations in a monoatomic linear chain: given a signal describing the path of oscillations of electrons as a function of time, we determine the strength of the applied field along the direction of motion or, equivalently, the lattice spacing. We find that the proposed approach has more than 80% of accuracy classifying the studied physical parameters., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. 6. The Union of the Cultures in the School: Education and Audio-Visual Communication

Abstract

The item in the environment which is going to turn this work is multiculturalism, namely, the existence of several different cultures in one nation or in the same geographical reality, which accepts diversity and tolerates the maintenance of the cultural identity of all and each of minority groups ("Advanced Teaching English Dictionary," 1998 edition, Ed. SM page. 841). This happens in the school due to the current immigration movement. Therefore, after establishing the legal and theoretical base of our work, we will record the importance that schools have remedial education, thus justifying the need to implement our project. This first part will be more theoretical, and, with it, we will give rise to a second practice that is to be proposed in a draft standard for those centers that are displayed in various cultures. Our intention is that through it, our students (whether immigrants or not) be prepared to function in different social networks in which, within a dynamic of dialogue, contact with other schools exposures and via videoconference, so our students will have the opportunity to learn more about other cultures.

Abstract

The unexpected discovery of hairy black hole solutions in theories with scalar fields simply by considering asymptotically Anti de-Sitter, rather than asymptotically flat, boundary conditions is analyzed in a way that exhibits in a clear manner the differences between the two situations. It is shown that the trivial Schwarzschild Anti de Sitter becomes unstable in some of these situations, and the possible relevance of this fact for the ADS/CFT conjecture is pointed out., Comment: 12 pages. Abstract

This bachelor's degree final project involves the design and implementation of the necessary system to simulate a flight of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft in the FS2020 simulator. The simulator is based on the use of an actual DC-9 cockpit, which is sectioned and located in the facilities of the INS Illa dels Banyols institute in Prat de Llobregat. Starting from the initial requirements outlined by INS Illa dels Banyols, the data acquisition system is designed for all primary aircraft controls and some secondary controls, as well as the landing gear actuation position. Within this design, the implementation carried out must be able to use the original aircraft motion mechanisms (original control cables) as realistically as possible, as provided by the DC-9 section. Data is captured using a Raspberry Pi and an extension with 10 analog-to-digital converters. The data is sent via Ethernet cable to the computer running the simulator. Both the Raspberry Pi and the control computer have required the programming of local applications to perform these tasks. The entire hardware design, application code, as well as the arrangement of mechanisms throughout the cockpit section and configuration, have been documented in this project so that future developments of the DC-9 simulator can continue successfully based on the foundations established by this project., Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::9 - Indústria, Innovació i Infraestructura

Abstract

The appearance of resources of information in electronic formats has made it necessary to come in a substantive way to the documentary languages and especially to the thesauri as a tool for indexation and the recovery both of textual documents and programming tools. On the part of the document makers it has become necessary to rethink the thesauri and adapt them not only to the recovery of new informative objects but to new forms of access and to the new capacities of hypertext navigation. The situation is described and evaluated for the evolution of thesauri to adapt to this new reality with special emphasis on conceptual maps and topic maps as dynamic environments better adapted to a more semantic recovery inside contextual environments of distributed information.

Abstract

Background: Convalescent plasma has been widely used to treat COVID-19 and is under investigation in numerous randomized clinical trials, but results are publicly available only for a small number of trials. The objective of this study was to assess the benefits of convalescent plasma treatment compared to placebo or no treatment and all-cause mortality in patients with COVID-19, using data from all available randomized clinical trials, including unpublished and ongoing trials (Open Science Framework, https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/GEHFX). Methods: In this collaborative systematic review and meta-analysis, clinical trial registries (ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform), the Cochrane COVID-19 register, the LOVE database, and PubMed were searched until April 8, 2021. Investigators of trials registered by March 1, 2021, without published results were contacted via email. Eligible were ongoing, discontinued and completed randomized clinical trials that compared convalescent plasma with placebo or no treatment in COVID-19 patients, regardless of setting or treatment schedule. Aggregated mortality data were extracted from publications or provided by investigators of unpublished trials and combined using the Hartung–Knapp–Sidik–Jonkman random effects model. We investigated the contribution of unpublished trials to the overall evidence. Results: A total of 16,477 patients were included in 33 trials (20 unpublished with 3190 patients, 13 published with 13,287 patients). 32 trials enrolled only hospitalized patients (including 3 with only intensive care unit patients). Risk of bias was low for 29/33 trials. Of 8495 patients who received convalescent plasma, 1997 died (23%), and of 7982 control patients, 1952 died (24%). The combined risk ratio for all-cause mortality was 0.97 (95% confidence interval: 0.92; 1.02) with between-study heterogeneity not beyond chance (I2 = 0%). Abstract

Steel trusses are the preferred structures when large distances are required to span due to its lightweight, the reduced deflection and its load bearing capacity. Although nowadays with the help of computational tools more efficient designs can be achieved, the geometrical shape of trusses has barely changed. This is mainly due to the ease of the required structural calculations and due to the available standard manufacturing and assembly procedures. Although a standard shape could be seen as an advantage, studies suggest that the relationship between the efficient use of material and design rationalization is not balanced, leading to design-overcapacity of the structure. The use of optimization procedures provides new opportunities to engineers. New design solutions and near-optimal structures can be achieved when implementing optimization processes. Optimization processes could generate economical alternatives in terms of weight reduction. Despite optimization techniques are becoming increasingly available, optimized structures are not commonly used in real practice due to the complex configuration an optimized structure might have, especially when using layout optimization. Due to the non-conventional node-members configuration, realizing these optimized trusses in real practice with conventional joining mechanisms, such as bolted and welded connections, will probably lead to complex designs and higher costs. Therefore, innovative joining technologies are required to be implemented. Snap-fit connections are widely used connecting mechanism for joining plastic components. Due to its simplicity and efficiency while connecting two or more elements together are suitable for different applications. Despite it is not commonly used in the building industry and it is frequently used on small scale applications, the principle based on snap-fit connections could be used to connect the structural members of optimized trusses. 27. The prediction of applied force and torque during flat hot rolling

Abstract

A mathematical model has been used to calculate the roll force and torque produced under a wide range of flat hot rolling conditions. The technique used is based on the numerical solution to the Von Karman equation developed by Alexander and applied to cold rolling conditions. In the present work, extensions have been made that allow the use of a yield .stress which is dependent upon temperature, rate of deformation and extent of inhomogeneity of the deformation process. Like Alexander, the present model considers also the effect of both: the elastic zone at each end of the deformation region and of roll flattening on force and torque. A prerequisite for these calculations has been the experimental determination of the temperature gradients in the plate during rolling, the coefficient of friction between plate and rolls and the flow stress of the material at relevant temperatures and strain rates; the last named data being supplemented by published data on similar material. The results have been compared with experimentally determined force and torque required to roll mild steel plates at temperatures between 900C and 1200C, under uniubricated conditions. The coefficients of friction associated with percentage reductions of between 30 and were within the range 0.2--0.5. The thickness of the scale, the rolling velocity and the temperatures at the plate surface appeared to control the magnitude of the coefficient of friction. The peripheral layers of the plates underwent a severe quench, caused by rapid heat transfer to the rolls: the associated temperature reduction increased with increasing roll pressures and contact time. The resulting temperature gradient was implied in the calculation using a geometric mean of the individual temperature measurements. At rolling temperatures between 900 °C and 1000°C and reductions up to 35 the degree of agreement between the experimental and calculated roll forces and torques were +/-1 Jfo and +/-1% respectively, although the use of Suzuki's flow stress data reduced these discrepancies to about4 6% and4 11% respectively in most cases. However the use of higher reductions or higher, temperatures led to poorer agreement between calculation and experiment 2% and 4 35- in the case of roll force and torque respectively).

Abstract

Tau is the major constituent of neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanism underlying tau-associated neural damage remains unclear. Here, we show that tau can directly interact with nucleoporins of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) and affect their structural and functional integrity. Pathological tau impairs nuclear import and export in tau-overexpressing transgenic mice and in human AD brain tissue. Furthermore, the nucleoporin Nup98 accumulates in the cell bodies of some tangle-bearing neurons and can facilitate tau aggregation in vitro. These data support the hypothesis that tau can directly interact with NPC components, leading to their mislocalization and consequent disruption of NPC function. This raises the possibility that NPC dysfunction contributes to tau-induced neurotoxicity in AD and tauopathies.

Heterologous hybridization facilitates the cloning of the Aspergillus terreus gla1 gene, which encodes a glucoamylase. Transcriptional analysis of the gene reveals the presence of a protein having a C-terminus starch-binding domain and N-terminal catalytic domain. Examination of the influence of carbon sources on gla1 regulation reveals that starch and maltose stimulate the expression of the gene, while glucose represses the expression.

A novel method to induce genetic metamorphosis in industrial wine dry yeast is based on the resistance of the yeast mold to the antibiotic cycloheximide. The altered strain produces wine in an identical fashion to the old strain. The recombinant wine yeast strain emits a fungal enzyme during the microvivification process, and therefore, an increase in the flavor of the wine can be detected.

Background and Aim. Levetiracetam is a second-generation antiepileptic drug. It is approved as an adjunctive treatment of partial onset seizures with or without secondary generalization. It is considered safe with less than 1% of patients with transient elevations of liver enzymes. Methods. We report a case of acute liver failure secondary to Levetiracetam in combination with Lacosamide documented with a liver biopsy. Results. Liver biopsy demonstrated acute liver injury with a predominant submassive necrosis pattern and features of a drug-induced hepatitis. Conclusions. This is the first published case of acute liver failure due to antiepileptic therapy with Levetiracetam in combination with Lacosamide.

Abstract

NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning.

En mi presentación, les planteo un nuevo enfoque en que el riesgo se evalúa en cada etapa de la cadena de valor del proyecto, desde la exploración hasta el cierre de la mina, lo que permite la gestión de riesgo como un proceso escalonado de optimización del valor añadido.

Abstract

The success of a sustainable business project depends on different factors but there is no doubt that the excellence of business management is the single most critical factor, because of it is what connects all the others. In a constantly changing world, a new way of doing things will be proposed setting criteria for taking decisions that create value today and in the future. Professional ethics and transparency must be applied to employees, suppliers, customers and shareholders. A change organizational culture is necessary to respect social and environmental concerns, avoiding erroneous business decisions that endanger the well-being of future generations. In this paper, a model based on excellence and sustainability is proposed, which is based on a diagnostics tool to determine defects and problems, where the areas for improvement are identified and defined both qualitatively and quantitatively, so an action plan could be designed. Subsequently, both solutions and the right tools are applied to move progressively toward our proposed model. The model proposed in this paper represents a new approach to sustainable business management based on excellence, is applied specifically to mining companies.
