The Berry phase understanding of electronic properties has attracted special interest in condensed matter physics, leading to phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect and the topological Hall effect. A non-vanishing Berry phase, induced in momentum space by the band structure or in real space by a non-coplanar spin structure, is the origin of both effects. Here, we report a sign conversion of the anomalous Hall effect and a large topological Hall effect in (Cr0.9B0.1)Te single crystals. The spin reorientation from an easy-axis structure at high temperature to an easy-cone structure below 140 K leads to conversion of the Berry curvature, which influences both, anomalous and topological, Hall effects in the presence of an applied magnetic field and current. We compare and summarize the topological Hall effect in four categories with different mechanisms and have a discussion into the possible artificial fake effect of topological Hall effect in polycrystalline samples, which provides a deep understanding of the relation between spin structure and Hall properties., Comment: 4 figures, 1 table

The topological Hall effect (THE), induced by the Berry curvature, which originates from non-zero scalar spin chirality, is an important feature for mesoscopic topological structures, such as skyrmions. However, the THE might also arise from other microscopic non-coplanar spin structures in the lattice. Thus, the origin of the THE inevitably needs to be determined to fully understand skyrmions and find new host materials. Here, we examine the Hall effect in both bulk- and micron-sized lamellar samples of MnBi. The sample size affects the temperature and field range in which the THE is detectable. Although bulk sample exhibits the THE only upon exposure to weak fields in the easy-cone state, in thin lamella the THE exists across a wide temperature range and occurs at fields near saturation. Our results show that both the non-coplanar spin structure in the lattice and topologically non-trivial skyrmion bubbles are responsible for the THE, and that the dominant mechanism depends on the sample size. Hence, the magnetic phase diagram for MnBi is strongly size-dependent. Our study provides an example in which the THE is simultaneously induced by two mechanisms, and builds a bridge between mesoscopic and microscopic magnetic structures.

The development of high-density magnetic recording media is limited by the superparamagnetism in very small ferromagnetic crystals. Hard magnetic materials with strong perpendicular anisotropy offer stability and high recording density. To overcome the difficulty of writing media with a large coercivity, heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) has been developed, rapidly heating the media to the Curie temperature Tc before writing, followed by rapid cooling. Requirements are a suitable Tc, coupled with anisotropic thermal conductivity and hard magnetic properties. Here we introduce Rh2CoSb as a new hard magnet with potential for thin film magnetic recording. A magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3.6 MJm-3 is combined with a saturation magnetization of {\mu}0Ms = 0.52 T at 2 K (2.2 MJm-3 and 0.44 T at room-temperature). The magnetic hardness parameter of 3.7 at room temperature is the highest observed for any rare-earth free hard magnet. The anisotropy is related to an unquenched orbital moment of 0.42 {\mu}B on Co, which is hybridized with neighbouring Rh atoms with a large spin-orbit interaction. Moreover, the pronounced temperature-dependence of the anisotropy that follows from its Tc of 450 K, together with a high thermal conductivity of 20 Wm-1K-1, makes Rh2CoSb a candidate for development for heat assisted writing with a recording density in excess of 10 Tb/in2.

This work reports on first principles calculations of the electronic and magnetic structure of tetragonal Heusler compounds with the composition Rh$_2$Fe$_{x}$Co$_{1-x}$Sb ($0\leq x\leq1$). It is found that the magnetic moments increase from 2 to 3.4~$\mu_B$ and the Curie temperature decreases from 500 to 464~K with increasing Fe content $x$. The $3d$ transition metals make the main contribution to the magnetic moments, whereas Rh contributes only approximately 0.2~$\mu_B$ per atom, independent of the composition. The paper focuses on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the borderline compounds Rh$_2$FeSb, Rh$_2$Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Sb, and Rh$_2$CoSb. A transition from easy-axis to easy-plane anisotropy is observed when the composition changes from Rh$_2$CoSb to Rh$_2$FeSb. Tetragonal Mn-based Heusler compounds feature rich exchange interactions and exotic topological magnetic textures, such as antiskyrmions, complimented by the chiral-type Hall effects. This makes the material class interesting for device applications. We report the relation of the magnetic exchange interactions to the thickness and Mn concentration of Mn$_{x}$PtSn films, grown by magnetron sputtering. The competition of the magnetic exchange interactions determines the finite temperature magnetic texture and thereby the chiral-type Hall effects in external magnetic fields. We investigate the magnetic and transport properties as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We focus on the anomalous and chiral-type Hall effects and the behavior of the dc-magnetization, in relation to chiral spin textures. We further determine the stable crystal phase for a relative Mn concentration between 1.5 and 1.85 in the $I\overline{4}2d$ structure. We observe a spin-reorientation transition in all compounds studied, which is due to the competition of exchange interactions on different Mn sublattices. Since the discovery of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) has been thought to be zero when there is no net magnetization. However, the recently found relation between the intrinsic AHE and the Berry curvature predicts other possibilities, such as a large AHC in non-colinear antiferromagnets with no net magnetization but net Berry curvature. Vice versa, the AHE in principle could be tuned to zero, irrespective of a finite magnetization. Here, we experimentally investigate this possibility and demonstrate that, the symmetry elements of Heusler magnets can be changed such that the Berry curvature and all the associated properties are switched while leaving the magnetization unaffected. This enables us to tune the AHC from 0 {\Omega}-1cm-1 up to 1600 {\Omega}-1cm-1 with an exceptionally high anomalous Hall angle up to 12 %, while keeping the magnetization same. We present an ab-initio study of the temperature-dependent longitudinal and anomalous Hall resistivities in the compensated collinear ferrimagnet Mn$_{1.5}$V$_{0.5}$FeAl. Its transport properties are calculated using the general fully relativistic Kubo--Bastin formalism and their temperature dependency is accounted for magnetic and structural disorder. Both scattering sources, together with the residual chemical disorder, were treated equally provided by the CPA (Coherent Potential Approximation) SPR-KKR (Spin-Polarized Relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker) method. All calculated properties showed good agreement with a recent experimental results, providing useful specific information on the chemical and magnetic arrangement as well as on the influence of disorder. Finally, we demonstrated that the anomalous Hall effect in such compensated systems occurs regardless of the vanishing net spin moment., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Various Co2 based Heusler compounds are predicted to be Weyl materials. These systems with broken symmetry possess a large Berry curvature, and introduce exotic transport properties. The present study on epitaxially grown Co2TiSn films is an initial approach to understand and explore this possibility. The anomalous Hall effect in the well-ordered Co2TiSn films has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The measured Hall conductivity is in good agreement to the calculated Berry curvature. Small deviations between them are due to the influence of skew scattering on the Hall effect. From theoretical point of view, the main contribution to the anomalous Hall effect originates from slightly gapped nodal lines, due to a symmetry reduction induced by the magnetization. It has been found that only part of the nodal lines contributed near to the anomalous Hall conductivity at a fixed Fermi energy which can be explained from a magnetic symmetry analysis. Furthermore, from hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we establish the electronic structure in the film that is comparable to the theoretical density of states calculations. The topological phases of matter provide the opportunity to observe many exotic properties, like the existence of two dimensional topological surface states in the form of Dirac cone in topological insulators, chiral transport through open Fermi arc in Weyl semimetals etc. However, these properties can only affect the transport characteristics and therefore can be useful for applications only if the topological phenomena occur near the Fermi level. CaAgAs is a promising candidate, wherein the ab-initio calculations predict line-node at the Fermi level which on including spin-orbit coupling transforms into a topological insulator. In this report, we study the electronic structure of CaAgAs with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), ab-initio calculations and transport measurements. The ARPES results show that the bulk valence band crosses the Fermi energy at gamma-point and the band dispersion matches the ab-initio calculations closely on shifting the Fermi energy by -0.5 eV. This work reports on the structural and magnetic properties of Mn$_{2.7-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ga$_{1.3}$ Heusler films with different Fe content x (0 $\leqslant$ x $\leqslant$ 1.2). The films were deposited heteroepitaxially on MgO single crystal substrates, by magnetron sputtering. Mn$_{2.7-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ga$_{1.3}$ films with the thickness of 35 nm were crystallized in tetragonal D0$_{22}$ structure with (001) preferred orientation. Tunable magnetic properties were achieved by changing the Fe content x. Mn$_{2.7-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ga$_{1.3}$ thins films exhibit high uniaxial anisotropy Ku $\geqslant$ 1.4 MJ/m3, coercivity from 0.95 to 0.3 T and saturation magnetization from 290 to 570 kA/m. The film with Mn$_{1.6}$Fe$_{1.1}$Ga$_{1.3}$ composition shows high Ku of 1.47 MJ/m3 and energy product ${(BH)_{max}}$ of 37 kJ/m3, at room temperature. These findings demonstrate that Mn$_{2.7-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ga$_{1.3}$ films have promising properties for mid-range permanent magnet and spintronic applications., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables

Elastic constants and their derived properties of various cubic Heusler compounds were calculated using first-principles density functional theory. To begin with, Cu$_2$MnAl is used as a case study to explain the interpretation of the basic quantities and compare them with experiments. The main part of the work focuses on Co$_2$-based compounds that are Co$_2$Mn$M$ with the main group elements $M=$~Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, and Co$_2TM$ with the main group elements Si or Ge, and the $3d$ transition metals $T=$~Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe. It is found that many properties of Heusler compounds correlate to the mass or nuclear charge $Z$ of the main group element. Blackman's and Every's diagrams are used to compare the elastic properties of the materials, whereas Pugh's and Poisson's ratios are used to analyze the relationship between interatomic bonding and physical properties. It is found that the {\it Pugh's criterion} on brittleness needs to be revised whereas {\it Christensen's criterion} describes the ductile--brittle transition of Heusler compounds very well. The calculated elastic properties give hint on a metallic bonding with an intermediate brittleness for the studied Heusler compounds. The universal anisotropy of the stable compounds has values in the range of $0.57

In the present work, the elastic constants and derived properties of tetragonal and cubic Heusler compounds were calculated using the high accuracy of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW). To find the criteria required for an accurate calculation, the consequences of increasing the numbers of $k$-points and plane waves on the convergence of the calculated elastic constants were explored. Once accurate elastic constants were calculated, elastic anisotropies, sound velocities, Debye temperatures, malleability, and other measurable physical properties were determined for the studied systems. The elastic properties suggested metallic bonding with intermediate malleability, between brittle and ductile, for the studied Heusler compounds. To address the effect of off-stoichiometry on the mechanical properties, the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) was used to calculate the elastic constants. The results indicated that an extreme correlation exists between the anisotropy ratio and the stoichiometry of the Heusler compounds, especially in the case of Ni$_{2}$MnGa.

The superconducting phase in iron based high Tc superconductors (FeSC) as in other unconventional superconductors such as the cuprates neighbours a magnetically ordered one in the phase diagram. This proximity hints at the importance of electron correlation effects in these materials, and Hund exchange interaction has been suggested to be the dominant correlation effect in FeSCs because of their multiband nature. By this reasoning, correlation should be strongest for materials closest to a half filled 3d shell (Mn compounds, hole doped FeSCs) and decrease for systems with both higher (electron doped FeSCs) and lower (Cr pnictides) 3d counts. Here we address the strength of correlation effects in BaCr2As2 by means of angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and first principles calculations. This combination provides us with two handles on the strength of correlation, First, a comparison of the experimental and calculated effective masses yields the correlation induced mass renormalisation. In addition, the lifetime broadening of the experimentally observed dispersions provides another measure of the correlation strength. Both approaches reveal a reduction of electron correlation in BaCr2As2 with respect to systems with a 3d count closer to five. Our results thereby support the theoretical predictions that Hund's exchange interaction is important in these materials., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The chromium arsenides BaCr2As2 and BaCrFeAs2 with ThCr2Si2 type structure (space group I4/mmm; also adopted by '122' iron arsenide superconductors) have been suggested as mother compounds for possible new superconductors. DFT-based calculations of the electronic structure evidence metallic antiferromagnetic ground states for both compounds. By powder neutron diffraction we confirm for BaCr2As2 a robust ordering in the antiferromagnetic G-type structure at T_N = 580 K with mu_Cr = 1.9 mu_B at T = 2K. Anomalies in the lattice parameters point to magneto-structural coupling effects. In BaCrFeAs2 the Cr and Fe atoms randomly occupy the transition-metal site and G-type order is found below 265 K with mu_Cr/Fe = 1.1 mu_B. 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy demonstrates that only a small ordered moment is associated with the Fe atoms, in agreement with electronic structure calculations with mu_Fe ~ 0. The temperature dependence of the hyperfine field does not follow that of the total moments. Both compounds are metallic but show large enhancements of the linear specific heat coefficient gamma with respect to the band structure values. The metallic state and the electrical transport in BaCrFeAs2 is dominated by the atomic disorder of Cr and Fe and partial magnetic disorder of Fe. Our results indicate that Neel-type order is unfavorable for the Fe moments and thus it is destabilized with increasing iron content., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

The Slater-Pauling rule states that L21 Heusler compounds with 24 valence electrons do never exhibit a total spin magnetic moment. In case of strongly localized magnetic moments at one of the atoms (here Mn) they will exhibit a fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnetic state instead, in particular, when symmetry does not allow for antiferromagnetic order. With aid of magnetic and anomalous Hall effect measurements it is experimentally demonstrated that Mn1.5V0.5FeAl follows such a scenario. The ferrimagnetic state is tuned by the composition. A small residual magnetization, that arises due to a slight mismatch of the magnetic moments in the different sublattices results in a pronounced change of the temperature dependence of the ferrimagnet. A compensation point is confirmed by observation of magnetic reversal and sign change of the anomalous Hall effect. Theoretical models are presented that correlate the electronic structure and the compensation mechanisms of the different half-metallic ferrimagnetic states in the Mn-V-Fe-Al Heusler system., Comment: Under review

The rare-earth monopnictide LaBi exhibits exotic magneto-transport properties including an extremely large and anisotropic magnetoresistance. Experimental evidence for topological surface states is still missing although band inversions have been postulated to induce a topological phase in LaBi. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in conjunction with $ab~initio$ calculations, we have revealed the existence of surface states of LaBi through the observation of three Dirac cones: two coexist at the corners and one appears at the center of the Brillouin zone. The odd number of surface Dirac cones is a direct consequence of the odd number of band inversions in the bulk band structure, thereby proving that LaBi is a topological, compensated semi-metal, which is equivalent to a time-reversal invariant topological insulator. The local atomic environments and magnetic properties were investigated for a series of Co(1+x)Fe(2-x)Si (0

A novel design of high-voltage compatible polarimeter for spin-resolved hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (Spin-HAXPES) went into operation at beamline BL09XU of SPring-8 in Hyogo, Japan. The detector is based on the well-established principle of electron diffraction from a W(001) single-crystal at a scattering energy of 103.5 eV. Its special feature is that it can be operated at a high negative bias potential up to 10 kV, necessary to access the HAXPES range. The polarimeter is operated behind a large hemispherical analyzer (Scienta R-4000). It was optimized for high transmission of the transfer optics. The exit plane of the analyzer contains a delay-line detector (20 mm dia.) for conventional multichannel intensity spectroscopy simultaneously with single-channel spin analysis. The performance of the combined setup is demonstrated by the first spin-resolved data for the valence-region of a FeCo functional layer of a tunneling device, buried beneath 3 nm of oxidic material. The well-structured spin polarization spectrum validates Spin-HAXPES in the valence energy range as powerful method for bulk electronic structure analysis. The spin polarization spectrum exhibits a rich structure, originating from clearly discernible transitions in the majority and minority partial spin spectra.

The half-metallic Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi is a very attractive material for spintronic devices because it exhibits very high tunnelling magnetoresistance ratios. This work reports on a spectroscopic investigation of thin Co$_2$MnSi films as they are used as electrodes in magnetic tunnel junctions. The investigated films exhibit a remanent in-plane magnetisation with a magnetic moment of about 5~$\mu_B$ when saturated, as expected. The low coercive field of only 4~mT indicates soft magnetic behaviour. Magnetic dichroism in emission and absorption was measured at the Co and Mn $2p$ core levels. The photoelectron spectra were excited by circularly polarised hard X-rays with an energy of of 6~keV and taken from the remanently magnetised film. The soft X-ray absorption spectra were taken in an induction field of 4~T. Both methods yielded large dichroism effects. An analysis reveals the localised character of the electrons and magnetic moments attributed to the Mn atoms, whereas the electrons related to the Co atoms contribute an itinerant part to the total magnetic moment.

Using circularly polarised radiation and a combination of bulk-sensitive hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) we studied the electronic and magnetic structure of epitaxial Mn$_{1.8}$Co$_{1.2}$Ga thin films. Spin resolved Bloch spectral functions, density of states as well as charge and magnetisation densities were investigated by a first-principles analysis of full potential, fully relativistic Korringa--Kohn--Rostoker calculations of the electronic structure. The valence states were experimentally investigated by using linear dichroism in the angular distribution and comparing the results to spin-resolved densities of states. The linear dichroism in the valence band enabled a symmetry analysis of the contributing states. The spectra were in good agreement with the theoretical partial density of states. The element-specific, spin-resolved, unoccupied densities of states for Co and Mn were analysed by using XAS and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the $L_{3,2}$ edges. The spectra were influenced by strong correlation effects. XMCD was used to extract the site resolved magnetic moments. The experimental values of $m_{\rm Mn}=0.7\:\mu_B$ and $m_{\rm Co}=1.05\:\mu_B$ agree very well with the calculated magnetic moments. Magnetic circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at the Mn and Co $2p$ core level exhibited a pronounced magnetic dichroism and confirmed the localised character of the Mn $d$ valence states.

The static and dynamic magnetic properties of tetragonally distorted Mn--Ga based alloys were investigated. Static properties are determined in magnetic fields up to 6.5~T using SQUID magnetometry. For the pure Mn$_{1.6}$Ga film, the saturation magnetisation is 0.36~MA/m and the coercivity is 0.29~T. Partial substitution of Mn by Co results in Mn$_{2.6}$Co$_{0.3}$Ga$_{1.1}$. The saturation magnetisation of those films drops to 0.2~MA/m and the coercivity is increased to 1~T. Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) is used to probe the high-frequency dynamics of Mn--Ga. The ferromagnetic resonance frequency extrapolated to zero-field is found to be 125~GHz with a Gilbert damping, $\alpha$, of 0.019. The anisotropy field is determined from both SQUID and TR-MOKE to be 4.5~T, corresponding to an effective anisotropy density of 0.81~MJ/m$^3$. Given the large anisotropy field of the Mn$_{2.6}$Co$_{0.3}$Ga$_{1.1}$ film, pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T are used to determine the field strength required to saturate the film in the plane. For this, the extraordinary Hall effect was employed as a probe of the local magnetisation. By integrating the reconstructed in--plane magnetisation curve, the effective anisotropy energy density for Mn$_{2.6}$Co$_{0.3}$Ga$_{1.1}$ is determined to be 1.23~MJ/m$^3$., Comment: J. Phys. Our study highlights spin-polarization mechanisms in metals, by focusing on the mobilities of conducting electrons with different spins instead of their quantities. Here, we engineer electron mobility by applying chemical disorder induced by non-stoichiometric variations. As a practical example, we discuss the scheme that establishes such variations in tetragonal Mn3Ga Heusler material. We justify this approach using first-principles calculations of the spin-projected conductivity components based on the Kubo-Greenwood formalism. It follows that, in majority of the cases, even a small substitution of some other transition element instead of Mn may lead to a substantial increase in spin-polarization along the tetragonal axis.

Topological insulators are known to their metallic surface states, a result of strong-spin-orbital coupling, that show unique surface transport phenomenon. But these surface transports are buried in presence of metallic bulk conduction. We synthesized very high quality Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystals by modified Bridgman method, that possess high bulk resistivity of $>$20~$\Omega$cm below 20~K, whereas the bulk is mostly inactive and surface transport dominates. Temperature dependence resistivity follows the activation law like a gap semiconductor in temperature range 20-300~K. We designed a special measurement geometry, which aims to extract the surface transport from the bulk. This special geometry is applied to measure the resistance and found that Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystal exhibits a cross over from bulk to surface conduction at 20~K. Simultaneously, the material also shows strong evidence of weak anti-localization in magneto-transport due to the protection against scattering by conducting surface states. This novel simple geometry is an easy route to find the evidence of surface transport in topological insulators, which are the promising materials for future spintronic applications., Comment: 6 Pages, 4 Figures

Based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we analyze the chemical and magnetic mechanisms stabilizing the cubic phase in Fe$_2$-based Heusler materials, which were previously predicted to be tetragonal when being chemically ordered. In agreement with recent experimental data, we found that these compounds crystallize within the so-called "inverted" cubic Heusler structure perturbed by a certain portion of the intrinsic chemical disorder. Understanding these mechanisms is a necessary step to guide towards the successful future synthesis of the stable Fe$_2$-based tetragonal phases, which are very promising candidates for the fabrication of rare-earth-free permanent magnets.

The composition dependence of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of epitaxially grown Mn-Co-Ga films were investigated. The crystal structure was observed to change from tetragonal to cubic as the Co content was increased. In terms of the dependence of saturation magnetization on the Co content, relatively small value was obtained for the Mn$_{2.3}$Co$_{0.4}$Ga$_{1.3}$ film at a large {\it K}$_\textrm u$ value of 9.2 Merg/cm$^3$. Electrical resistivity of Mn-Co-Ga films was larger than that of pure Mn-Ga film. The maximum value of the resistivity was 490 $\mu\Omega$cm for Mn$_{2.2}$Co$_{0.6}$Ga$_{1.2}$ film. The high resistivity of Mn-Co-Ga might be due to the presence of localized electron states in the films due to chemical disordering caused by the Co substitution., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures. Mn$_{3-x}$Co$_{x}$Ga epitaxial thin films were grown on MgO substrates by magnetron co-sputtering. Structures were tetragonal or cubic depending on Co content. Composition dependence of saturation magnetization and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy $K_u$ of the films were investigated. A high $K_u$ (1.2 MJ m$^{-3}$) was achieved for the Mn$_{2.6}$Co$_{0.3}$Ga$_{1.1}$ film with the magnetic moment 0.84$\mu_B$. Valence band spectra were obtained by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Sharp peaks in the cubic case, which were absent in the tetragonal case, prove that a van Hove singularity causes a band Jahn-Teller effect with tetragonal distortion. Observations agree well with the first-principles calculations.

This work reports on the measurement of magnetic dichroism in angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from in-plane magnetized buried thin films. The high bulk sensitivity of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in combination with circularly polarized radiation enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of buried layers. Angular distributions of high kinetic energy (7 to 8 keV) photoelectrons in a range of about 60 deg were recorded in parallel to the energy distribution. Depending on purpose, energy and angular resolutions of 150 to 250 meV and 0.17 to 2 deg can be accomplished simultaneously in such experiments. Experiments were performed on exchange-biased magnetic layers covered by thin oxide films. More specifically, the angular distribution of photoelectrons from the ferromagnetic layer Co2FeAl layer grown on MnIr exchange-biasing layer was investigated where the magnetic structure is buried beneath a MgO layer. Pronounced magnetic dichroism is found in the Co and Fe 2p states for all angles of emission. Fully epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with off-stoichiometric Co2-based Heusler alloy shows a intense dependency of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) on the Mn composition, demonstrating giant TMR ratios of up to 1995% at 4.2 K for 1. This work reports on the electronic structure of non-stoichiometric CoxMnyGez thin films with a fixed Co/Ge ratio of x : z = 2 : 0.38. The electronic structure was investigated by high energy, hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The high-resolution measurements of the valence band of the non-stoichiometric CoxMnyGez films close to the Fermi energy indicate a shift of the spectral weight compared to bulk Co2MnGe. This is in agreement with the changes in the density of states predicted by the calculations. Furthermore it is shown that the co-sputtering of Co2MnGe together with additional Mn is an appropriate technique to adjust the stoichiometry of the CoxMnyGez film composition. The resulting changes of the electronic structure within the valence band will allow to tune the magnetoresistive characteristics of CoxMnyGez based tunnel junctions as verified by the calculations and photoemission experiments.

Recent studies have reported an interesting class of semiconductor materials that bridge the gap between semiconductors and halfmetallic ferromagnets. These materials, called spin gapless semiconductors, exhibit a bandgap in one of the spin channels and a zero bandgap in the other and thus allow for tunable spin transport. Here, a theoretical and experimental study of the spin gapless Heusler compound Mn2CoAl is presented. It turns out that Mn2CoAl is a very peculiar ferrimagnetic semiconductor with a magnetic moment of 2 {\mu}B and a high Curie temperature of 720 K. Below 300 K, the compound exhibits nearly temperature-independent conductivity, very low, temperature-independent carrier concentration, and a vanishing Seebeck coefficient. The magnetoresistance changes sign with temperature. In high fields, it is positive and non-saturating at low temperatures, but negative and saturating at high temperatures. The anomalous Hall effect is comparatively low, which is explained by the close antisymmetry of the Berry curvature for kz of opposite sign.

The semiconducting half Heusler compound YPtSb was predicted theoretically to be capable of changing into topological insulator under proper strain. In this work, p type semiconducting half-Heusler YPtSb thin films were prepared by magnetron co-sputtering method from a specially designed target for the first time. Textured structure with (111) plane paralleling with (001) of MgO substrate was observed when YPtSb thin films were grown on MgO (100) substrate at 600{\deg}C.Electrical measurements show that the resistivity of YPtSb films decreases with increasing temperature, indicating a semiconductor-like behavior. The carrier density is as high as 1.15 X 10^21 cm-3 at 300 K. The band gap of YPtSb thin films obtained by infrared spectroscopy is around 0.1 - 0.15 eV, which is well in agreement with the theoretical prediction and the value measured in bulk YPtSb., Comment: Phys. Epitaxial semiconducting NiYBi thin films were directly prepared on MgO(100) substrates by magnetron sputtering. The intensity ratio of the (200) and (400) diffraction peaks, I(200)/I(400) = 2.93, was close to the theoretical value (3.03). The electronic structure of NiYBi was calculated using WIEN2k and a narrow indirect band gap of width 210 meV was found. The valence band spectra of the films obtained by linear dichroism in hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy exhibit clear structures that are in good agreement with the calculated band structure of NiYBi.

Thin films of the proposed topological insulator PdLuBi - a Heusler compound with the C1b structure - were prepared on Ta-Mo-buffered MgO(100) substrates by co-sputtering from PdBi2 and Lu targets. Epitaxial growth of high-quality PdLuBi films was confirmed by X-ray spectrometry and reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The root-mean-square roughness of the films was as low as 1.45 nm, although the films were deposited at high temperature. The film composition is close to the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The valence band spectra of the PdLuBi films, observed by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, correspond perfectly to the ab-initio-calculated density of states.

The electronic band structure of thin films and superlattices made of Heusler compounds with NiTiSn and NiZr$_{0.5}$Hf$_{0.5}$Sn composition was studied by means of polarization dependent hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The linear dichroism allowed to distinguish the symmetry of the valence states of the different types of layered structures. The films exhibit a larger amount of {\it "in-gap"} states compared to bulk samples. It is shown that the films and superlattices grown with NiTiSn as starting layer exhibit an electronic structure close to bulk materials.

Two types of structures were investigated with the IrMn exchange-biasing layer either above or below the ferromagnetic layer: one with a CoFe layer on top and another with a Co$_2$FeAl layer buried beneath the IrMn layer. A pronounced magnetic dichroism is found in the Co and Fe $2p$ states of both materials. The localization of the magnetic moments at the Fe site conditioning the peculiar characteristics of the Co$_2$FeAl Heusler compound, predicted to be a half-metallic ferromagnet, is revealed from the magnetic dichroism detected in the Fe $2p$ states.

We present the rational design scheme intended to provide the stable high spin-polarization at the interfaces of the magneto-resistive junctions by fulfilling the criteria of structural and chemical compatibilities at the interface. This can be realized by joining the semiconducting and half-metallic Heusler materials with similar structures. The present first-principal calculations verify that interface remains half-metallic if the nearest interface layers effectively form a stable Heusler material with the properties intermediate between the surrounding bulk parts. This leads to a simple rule for selecting the proper combinations.

Functionalized polcyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an interesting class of molecules in which the electronic state of the graphene-like hydrocarbon part is tuned by the functional group. Searching for new types of donor and acceptor molecules, a set of new PAHs has recently been investigated experimentally using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). In this work, the electronic structure of the PAHs is studied numerically with the help of B3LYP hybrid density functionals. Using the DELTA-SCF method, electron binding energies have been determined which affirm, specify and complement the UPS data. Symmetry properties of molecular orbitals are analyzed for a categorization and an estimate of the related signal strength. While SIGMA-like orbitals are difficult to detect in UPS spectra of condensed film, calculation provides a detailed insight into the hidden parts of the electronic structure of donor and acceptor molecules. In addition, a diffuse basis set (6-311++G**) was used to calculate electron affinity and LUMO eigenvalues. The calculated electron affinity (EA) provides a classification of the donor/acceptor properties of the studied molecules. Coronene-hexaone shows a high EA, comparable to TCNQ, which is a well-known classical acceptor. Calculated HOMO-LUMO gaps using the related eigenvalues have a good agreement with the experimental lowest excitation energies. In this report the Co2 based Heusler compounds are discussed as potential materials for spin voltage generation. The compounds were synthesized by arcmelting and consequent annealing. Band structure calculations were performed and revealed the compounds to be half-metallic ferromagnets. Magnetometry was performed on the samples and the Curie temperatures and the magnetic moments were determined. The Seebeck coefficients were measured from low to ambient temperatures for all compounds. In this work the theoretical and experimental investigations of Co2TiZ (Z = Si, Ge, or Sn) compounds are reported. Half-metallic ferromagnetism is predicted for all three compounds with only two bands crossing the Fermi energy in the majority channel. The magnetic moments fulfill the Slater-Pauling rule and the Curie temperatures are well above room temperature. All compounds show a metallic like resistivity for low temperatures up to their Curie temperature, above the resistivity changes to semiconducting like behavior. A large negative magnetoresistance of 55% is observed for Co2TiSn at room temperature in an applied magnetic field of 4T which is comparable to the large negative magnetoresistances of the manganites. The Seebeck coefficients are negative for all three compounds and reach their maximum values at their respective Curie temperatures and stay almost constant up to 950 K. The highest value achieved is -52muV/K m for Co2TiSn which is large for a metal. The combination of half-metallicity and the constant large Seebeck coefficient over a wide temperature range makes these compounds interesting materials for thermoelectric applications and further spincaloric investigations., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

Among the various alkali oxides the sesquioxides Rb4O6 and Cs4O6 are of special interest. Electronic structure calculations using the local spin-density approximation predicted that Rb4O6 should be a half-metallic ferromagnet, which was later contradicted when an experimental investigation of the temperature dependent magnetization of Rb4O6 showed a low-temperature magnetic transition and differences between zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) measurements. Such behavior is known from spin glasses and frustrated systems. Rb4O6 and Cs4O6 comprise two different types of dioxygen anions, the hyperoxide and the peroxide anions. The nonmagnetic peroxide anions do not contain unpaired electrons while the hyperoxide anions contain unpaired electrons in antibonding pi*-orbitals. High electron localization (narrow bands) suggests that electronic correlations are of major importance in these open shell p-electron systems. Correlations and charge ordering due to the mixed valency render p-electron-based anionogenic magnetic order possible in the sesquioxides. In this work we present an experimental comparison of Rb4O6 and the related Cs4O6. The crystal structures are verified using powder x-ray diffraction. The mixed valency of both compounds is confirmed using Raman spectroscopy, and time-dependent magnetization experiments indicate that both compounds show magnetic frustration, a feature only previously known from d- and f-electron systems.

This work reports on the novel Heusler superconductor ZrNi2Ga. Compared to other nickel-based superconductors with Heusler structure, ZrNi2Ga exhibits a relatively high superconducting transition temperature of Tc=2.9 K and an upper critical field of 1.5 T. Electronic structure calculations show that this relatively high transition temperature is caused by a van Hove singularity, which leads to an enhanced density of states at the Fermi energy. The van Hove singularity originates from a higher order valence instability at the L-point in the electronic structure. The enhanced density of states at the Fermi level was confirmed by specific heat and susceptibility measurements. Although many Heusler compounds are ferromagnetic, our measurements of ZrNi2Ga indicate a paramagnetic state above Tc and could not reveal any traces of magnetic order down to temperatures of at least 0.35 K. We investigated in detail the superconducting state with specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. Results of first-principles electronic structure calculations for the isotypic compounds GdAuX (ZrNiAl type, X = Mg, Cd, and In) are presented. We report on a systematic examination of the electronic structure and nature of the bonding in these intermetallics. Our calculations indicate a metallic state for all of the compounds. We find that the indium in GdAuIn and magnesium in GdAuMg have significant bonding interactions with Au. We have also identified In s lone pair in GdAuIn has more localized behaviour as compared with Mg s in GdAuMg. In this work, results of {\it ab-initio} band structure calculations for $A_2BC$ Heusler compounds that have $A$ and $B$ sites occupied by transition metals and $C$ by a main group element are presented. This class of materials includes some interesting half-metallic and ferromagnetic properties. The calculations have been performed in order to understand the properties of the minority band gap and the peculiar magnetic behavior found in these materials. Among the interesting aspects of the electronic structure of the materials are the contributions from both $A$ and $B$ atoms to states near the Fermi energy and to the total magnetic moment. The magnitude of the total magnetic moment, which depends as well on the kind of $C$ atoms, shows a trend consistent with the Slater-Pauling type behavior in several classes of these compounds. The localized moment in these magnetic compounds resides at the $B$ site. Other than in the classical Cu$_2$-based Heusler compounds, the $A$ atoms in Co$_2$, Fe$_2$, and Mn$_2$ based compounds may contribute pronounced to the total magnetic moment., Comment: 12 figures, one tex file, one bbl file, one bib file

This work reports on high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy for the valence band of Co2Mn(1-x)Fe(x)Si (x=0,0.5,1) excited by photons of about 8 keV energy. The measurements show a good agreement to calculations of the electronic structure using the LDA+U scheme. It is shown that the high energy spectra reveal the bulk electronic structure better compared to low energy XPS spectra. The high resolution measurements of the valence band close to the Fermi energy indicate the existence of the gap in the minority states for all three alloys., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to J. This work reports about bulk-sensitive, high energy photoelectron spectroscopy from the valence band of CoTiSb excited by photons from 1.2 to 5 keV energy. The high energy photoelectron spectra were taken at the KMC-1 high energy beamline of BESSY II employing the recently developed Phoibos 225 HV analyser. The measurements show a good agreement to calculations of the electronic structure using the LDA scheme. Half-Heusler compounds with 18 valence electrons are semi-conducting. It will be shown that doping with electrons results in half-metallic ferromagnets, similar to the case of diluted semi-conductors. CoTiSb is known to be a semi-conducting Half-Heusler compound. Doping by Fe is expected to result in ferromagnetic order. It was found that Ti can be replaced by up to about 10% Fe while its crystal structure still remains C1b, which was proved by X-ray powder diffraction. This work reports on the bulk properties of the quaternary Heusler alloy Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si with the Fe concentration $x=$. All samples, which were prepared by arc melting, exhibit $L2_1$ long range order over the complete range of Fe concentration. Structural and magnetic properties of Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si Heusler alloys were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, high and low temperature magnetometry, M{\"o\ss}bauer spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The electronic structure was explored by means of high energy photo emission spectroscopy at about 8 keV photon energy. This ensures true bulk sensitivity of the measurements. The magnetization of the Fe doped Heusler alloys is in agreement with the values of the magnetic moments expected for a Slater-Pauling like behavior of half-metallic ferromagnets. The experimental findings are discussed on the hand of self-consistent calculations of the electronic and magnetic structure. To achieve good agreement with experiment, the calculations indicate that on-site electron-electron correlation must be taken into account, even at low Fe concentration. The present investigation focuses on searching for the quaternary compound where the half-metallic behavior is stable against outside influences. Quaternary Heusler alloys Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Al with varying Cr to Fe ratio $x$ were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic structure and spectroscopic properties were calculated using the full relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method with coherent potential approximation to account for the random distribution of Cr and Fe atoms as well as random disorder. Magnetic effects are included by the use of spin dependent potentials in the local spin density approximation. Magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray absorption was measured at the $L_{2,3}$ edges of Co, Fe, and Cr of the pure compounds and the $x=0.4$ alloy in order to determine element specific magnetic moments. Calculations and measurements show an increase of the magnetic moments with increasing iron content. Resonant (560eV - 800eV) soft X-ray as well as high resolution - high energy ($\geq 3.5$keV) hard X-ray photo emission was used to probe the density of the occupied states in Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al., Comment: J.Phys.D_Appl.Phys. accepted
