Recent voyages of the Australian R/V Investigator across the remote Southern Ocean have provided unprecedented observations of precipitation made with both an Ocean Rainfall and Ice-Phase Precipitation Measurement Network (OceanRAIN) maritime disdrometer and a dual-polarization C-band weather radar (OceanPOL). This present study employs these observations to evaluate the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and the fifth major global reanalysis produced by ECMWF (ERA5) precipitation products. Working at a resolution of 60 min and 0.25° (∼25 km), light rain and drizzle are most frequently observed across the region. The IMERG product overestimated precipitation intensity when evaluated against the OceanRAIN but captured the frequency of occurrence well. Looking at the synoptic/process scale, IMERG was found to be the least accurate (overestimated intensity) under warm-frontal and high-latitude cyclone conditions, where multilayer clouds were commonly present. Under postfrontal conditions, IMERG underestimated the precipitation frequency. In comparison, ERA5's skill was more consistent across various synoptic conditions, except for high pressure conditions where the precipitation frequency (intensity) was highly overestimated (underestimated). Using the OceanPOL radar, an area-to-area analysis (fractional skill score) finds that ERA5 has greater skill than IMERG. There is little agreement in the phase classification between the OceanRAIN disdrometer, IMERG, and ERA5. The comparisons are complicated by the various assumptions for phase classification in the different datasets. Significance Statement: Our best quantitative estimates of precipitation over the remote, pristine Southern Ocean (SO) continue to suffer from a high degree of uncertainty, with large differences present among satellite-based and reanalysis products. New instrumentation on the R/V Investigator, specifically a dual-polarization C-band weather radar (OceanPOL) and a maritime disdrometer (OceanRAIN), provide unprecedented high-quality observations of precipitation across the SO that will aid in improving precipitation estimates in this region. We use these observations to evaluate the IMERG and ERA5 precipitation products. We find that, in general, IMERG overestimated precipitation intensity, but captured the frequency of occurrence well. Se pretende conocer los efectos de la terapia ortopedica maxilar temprana en niiios menores de un alio, con sindrome de Down, empleando una placa de acetato blando con estimulador palatino tipo Castillo-Morales, que bused mejorar la posiciOn lingual por medio de un estimulo exteroceptivo. Se tomaron modelos de estudio, medidas antropometricas y registro filmico a 34 nitios, evaluando cambios craneales, faciales y de arcos dentales durante seis meses. Los niiios que recibieron la terapia evidenciaron mejoria en la posicion lingual, algunos incluso obtuvieron selle labial; ademits presentaron mayores dimensiones faciales en las medidas antropometricas: altura facial, diametro bicigomcitico, diametro bigonial e indice facial. Las mediciones de modelos no mostraron diferencias estadisticamente significativas entre el grupo con tratamiento y el grupo sin tratamiento. Los pacientes mOs pequeiios se adaptaron mejor a la placa, lo cual indica que la terapia puede ser favorable si se inicia a edades tempranas. Traditional societies are characterized by the predominance of religious worldviews, in contrast to modern societies, which open up other avenues of sense, besides religious expression. This study aims to determine the influence of the values of modern societies on religious changes, between 1990 and 2000. We have recourse to data from the European Values Survey for eight Catholic countries. The EVS questionnaire provides a set of guidelines in various areas of life. Several scales have been built with the aim of presenting value orientations. In our analysis we selected two constructs: following Inglehart's thesis, which enables us to explain the change in values, and the Rokeach set of questions to determine the values that individuals considered essential for life. The results allowed us to conclude that we are witnessing a reconfiguration of the mindset that has a decisive influence on younger generations who have assimilated the values of independence and determination and the values of welfare and selfrealization, once the socio-cultural and economic context was favourable. El actual conjunto de Normas que regulan la oferta de servicios de planificación familiar por parte de los organismos oficiales de salud en Colombia, tuvo su origen a mediados de 1984. Pese a que los documentos técnicos que especificaban las normas y procedimientos de dicha actividad fueron preparados en el año mencionado, sólo hasta 1987 la División Materno Infantil del Ministerio de Salud Pública pudo contar con una publicación especialmente preparada para hacer conocer las normas de la mayoría de los organismos oficiales de salud, instituciones de educación superior, escuelas de auxiliares de enfermería y otros en el país.

From the teachers' point of view one of the key issues concerning the teaching/ learning process is the students' lack of motivation, either because of the inadequacy of the teaching methods, which do not create involving situations, or because the students simply don't want to study and consequently don't want to learn. To study motivation in learning involves a deeper understanding of a complex system of interrelated factors which operate as a whole in the students' motivation. We have based the present study on Boruchovitch and Neves (2006), Siqueira and Wechsler (2006) and Simões and Alarcão (2011), who defend the use of a quantitative scale to measure students' motivation, with the aim of setting up and validating evaluation tools on students' learning motivation. Our practical procedure consisted on the designing of these instruments, following the theoretical models; its application to a determined number of subjects; the application of other psychological tools for the study of convergent validity and for the verification of theoretical hypothesis; a factor analysis for item construction in the factors which will determine the final instruments and, finally, the study of the time stability for the test application and re-testing after a determined time lapse. The final results allow us to verify that it is possible to measure motivation for learning. We consider it is relevant to continue this research so that we may understand the students' real motivations. The need to compare and combine data quantitatively is becoming morefrequent in studies of animal behaviour, ecology and conservation. Using a hypothetical data set, I point out some limitations of combining and comparing data using Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST). First, I discuss three different aspects of data analysis that should regularly be considered: (1) effect size estimation, (2) confidence intervals estimation and, (3) power analysis. I then suggest meta- analysis as a sensible alternative method to account for some limitations of NHST. Meta-analysis is a quantitative technique for the combination and comparison of independent but similar studies. Meta-analysis allows comparison and summary of effect sizes across studies. When testing hypotheses framed in evolutionary theory, where small effects may have profound consequences, a knowledge of the magnitude of the association may be as important as knowing whether the data complywith the arbitrary, sacred and dogmatic significance criterion of p < 0.05. Natal dispersal is an important life-history stage influencing individual fitness, social dynamics of groups and population structure. Understanding factors influencing dispersal is essential for evaluating explanations for the evolution and maintenance of social organization, including parental care and mating systems. The social and mating systems of Azara's owl monkeys ( Aotus azarae ) are infrequent among mammals; these primates are pair-living, serially and genetically monogamous and both sexes directly care for offspring. To evaluate the role that competition and inbreeding avoidance play in shaping dispersal patterns, we used 25 years of demographic and genetic data to examine how variation in timing of natal dispersal is related to social (adult replacements, step-parents, births and group size) and ecological factors (seasonal abundance of resources) in a wild population of A. azarae in Formosa, Argentina. We found that all males and females dispersed from their natal groups, but subadults delayed dispersal when a step-parent of the opposite sex joined the group, indicating that they may perceive these step-parents as potential mates. Dispersal was more probable when resource conditions were better, regardless of age. Objectives: Blunt abdominal trauma is a common cause of emergency department admission. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is the gold standard method for identifying intra-abdominal injuries in patients experiencing blunt trauma, especially those with high-energy trauma. Although the diagnostic accuracy of this imaging technique is very high, patient admission and prolonged observation protocols are still common practices worldwide. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of intra-abdominal injury in hemodynamically stable patients with high-energy blunt trauma and a normal abdominal CT scan at a Level-1 Trauma Center in Colombia, South America, to assess the relevance of a prolonged observation period., Methods: We performed a retrospective study of patients admitted to the emergency department for blunt trauma between 2021 and 2022. All consecutive patients with high-energy mechanisms of trauma and a normal CT scan at admission were included. Our primary outcomes were the incidence of intra-abdominal injury identified during a 24-hour observation period or hospital stay, ICU admission, and death., Results: We included 480 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The median age was 33 (IQR 25.5, 47), and 74.2% were male. The most common mechanisms of injury were motor vehicle accidents (64.2%), falls from height (26%), and falls from bikes (3.1%). A total of 99.2% of patients had a Revised Trauma Score of 8. Only 1 patient (0.2%) (95% CI: 0.01-1.16) presented with an abdominal injury during the observation period. No ICU admissions or deaths were reported., Conclusion: The incidence of intra-abdominal injury in patients with hemodynamically stable blunt trauma and a negative abdominal CT scan is extremely low, and prolonged observation may not be justified in these patients., (© 2024. Background: Petrochemicals contribute to environmental issues, with concerns ranging from energy consumption and carbon emission to pollution. In contrast, microbial biorefineries offer eco-friendly alternatives. The solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas putida DOT-T1E serves as a suitable host for producing aromatic compounds, specifically L-phenylalanine and its derivative, 2-phenylethanol (2-PE), which find widespread applications in various industries., Results: This study focuses on enhancing 2-PE production in two L-phenylalanine overproducing strains of DOT-T1E, namely CM12-5 and CM12-5Δgcd (xylABE), which grow with glucose and glucose-xylose, respectively. To synthesize 2-PE from L-phenylalanine, these strains were transformed with plasmid pPE-1, bearing the Ehrlich pathway genes, and it was found higher 2-PE production with glucose (about 50-60 ppm) than with xylose (< 3 ppm). To understand the limiting factors, we tested the addition of phenylalanine and intermediates from the Ehrlich and shikimate pathways. The results identified intracellular L-phenylalanine as a key limiting factor for 2-PE production. To overcame this limitation, a chorismate mutase/prephenate dehydratase variant-insentive to feedback inhibition by aromatic amino acids-was introduced in the producing strains. This led to increased L-phenylalanine production and subsequently produced more 2-PE (100 ppm). Random mutagenesis of the strains also produced strains with higher L-phenylalanine titers and increased 2-PE production (up to 120 ppm). The improvements resulted from preventing dead-end product accumulation from shikimate and limiting the catabolism of potential pathway intermediates in the Ehrlich pathway. The study explored agricultural waste substrates, such as corn stover, sugarcane straw and corn-syrup as potential C sources. The best results were obtained using 2G substrates at 3% (between 82 and 100 ppm 2-PE), with glucose being the preferred sugar for 2-PE production among the monomeric sugars in these substrates., Conclusions: The findings of this study offer strategies to enhance phenylalanine production, a key substrate for the synthesis of aromatic compounds. The ability of P. putida DOT-T1E to thrive with various C-sources and its tolerance to substrates, products, and potential toxicants in industrial wastes, are highlighted. The study identified and overcome possible bottlenecks for 2-PE production. Acid phosphatases are enzymes that play a crucial role in the hydrolysis of various organophosphorous molecules. A putative acid phosphatase called FS6 was identified using genetic profiles and sequences from different environments. FS6 showed high sequence similarity to type C acid phosphatases and retained more than 30% of consensus residues in its protein sequence. A histidine-tagged recombinant FS6 produced in Escherichia coli exhibited extremophile properties, functioning effectively in a broad pH range between 3.5 and 8.5. The enzyme demonstrated optimal activity at temperatures between 25 and 50°C, with a melting temperature of 51.6°C. Kinetic parameters were determined using various substrates, and the reaction catalysed by FS6 with physiological substrates was at least 100-fold more efficient than with p-nitrophenyl phosphate. Objectives: A deeper understanding of the lived experiences of Hispanic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can help guide the development of behavioural programmes that facilitate NAFLD management. This paper explores Hispanic women's experiences living with NAFLD., Design, Setting, Participants: We collected brief sociodemographic questionnaires and conducted in-depth interviews with 12 low-income (all had household income ≤USD$55 000 per year) Hispanic women with NAFLD from the Houston area. Transcripts were audio-recorded and transcribed. We developed a coding scheme and used thematic analysis to identify emergent themes, supported by Atlas.ti., Results: Participants identified physicians as their main information source on NAFLD but also consulted the internet, family, friends and peers. Many were still left wanting more information. Participants identified family history, sedentary lifestyles, poor diet and comorbid conditions as causes for their NAFLD. Participants also reported emotional distress after diagnosis. Participants experienced both successes and challenges in making lifestyle changes in nutrition and physical activity. We are interested in converting second generation feedstocks into styrene, a valuable chemical compound, using the solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas putida DOT-T1E as a chassis. Styrene biosynthesis takes place from L-phenylalanine in two steps: firstly, L-phenylalanine is converted into trans-cinnamic acid (tCA) by PAL enzymes and secondly, a decarboxylase yields styrene. This study focuses on designing and synthesizing a functional trans-cinnamic acid decarboxylase in Pseudomonas putida. To achieve this, we utilized the "wholesale" method, involving deriving two consensus sequences from multi-alignments of homologous yeast ferulate decarboxylase FDC1 sequences with > 60% and > 50% identity, respectively. These consensus sequences were used to design Pseudomonas codon-optimized genes named psc1 and psd1 and assays were conducted to test the activity in P. putida. Our results show that the PSC1 enzyme effectively decarboxylates tCA into styrene, whilst the PSD1 enzyme does not. The optimal conditions for the PSC1 enzyme, including pH and temperature were determined. The L-phenylalanine DOT-T1E derivative Pseudomonas putida CM12-5 that overproduces L-phenylalanine was used as the host for expression of pal/psc1 genes to efficiently convert L-phenylalanine into tCA, and the aromatic carboxylic acid into styrene. The highest styrene production was achieved when the pal and psc1 genes were co-expressed as an operon in P. putida CM12-5. This construction yielded styrene production exceeding 220 mg L -1 . This study serves as a successful demonstration of our strategy to tailor functional enzymes for novel host organisms, thereby broadening their metabolic capabilities. The purpose of this study is to explore the working conditions and attitudes towards work among the youth of Braga, Portugal. Focusing on residents of the Municipality of Braga born between 1990 and 2000, we employed a quantitative approach using a non-probabilistic convenience sampling method, with a sample size of 406 people. The survey, conducted through questionnaires, reveals a complex interplay between the youth's work attitudes and their conditions. Despite the predominance of precarious employment, their work experiences and expectations do not entirely reflect this instability. Our findings suggest a shift in the role of work in the youths' identity compared to previous generations. Noncoding DNA is central to our understanding of human gene regulation and complex diseases 1,2 , and measuring the evolutionary sequence constraint can establish the functional relevance of putative regulatory elements in the human genome 3-9 . Identifying the genomic elements that have become constrained specifically in primates has been hampered by the faster evolution of noncoding DNA compared to protein-coding DNA 10 , the relatively short timescales separating primate species 11 , and the previously limited availability of whole-genome sequences 12 . Here we construct a whole-genome alignment of 239 species, representing nearly half of all extant species in the primate order. Using this resource, we identified human regulatory elements that are under selective constraint across primates and other mammals at a 5% false discovery rate. We detected 111,318 DNase I hypersensitivity sites and 267,410 transcription factor binding sites that are constrained specifically in primates but not across other placental mammals and validate their cis-regulatory effects on gene expression. These regulatory elements are enriched for human genetic variants that affect gene expression and complex traits and diseases. (1) Background: Heart failure is an extremely impactful health issue from both a social and quality-of-life point of view and the rate of patients with this condition is destined to rise in the next few years. Transplantation remains the mainstay of treatment for end-stage heart failure, but a shortage of organs represents a significant problem that prolongs time spent on the waiting list. In view of this, the selection of donor and recipient must be extremely meticulous, considering all factors that could predispose to organ failure. One of the main considerations regarding heart transplants is the risk of graft rejection and the need for immunosuppression therapy to mitigate that risk. In this study, we aimed to assess the characteristics of patients who need immunosuppression treatment for rejection within one year of heart transplantation and its impact on mid-term and long-term mortality. (2) Methods: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Registry was queried to identify patients who solely underwent a heart transplant in the US between 2000 and 2021. Patients were divided into two groups according to the need for anti-rejection treatment within one year of heart transplantation. Patients' characteristics in the two groups were assessed, and 1 year and 10 year mortality rates were compared. (3) Results: A total of 43,763 patients underwent isolated heart transplantation in the study period, and 9946 (22.7%) needed anti-rejection treatment in the first year. Patients who required treatment for rejection within one year after transplant were more frequently younger (49 ± 14 vs. 52 ± 14 years, p < 0.001), women (31% vs. 23%, p < 0.001), and had a higher CPRA value (14 ± 26 vs. 11 ± 23, p < 0.001). Also, the rate of prior cardiac surgery was more than double in this group (27% vs. 12%, p < 0.001), while prior LVAD (12% vs. 11%, p < 0.001) and IABP (10% vs. 9%, p < 0.01) were more frequent in patients who did not receive anti-rejection treatment in the first year. Finally, pre-transplantation creatinine was significantly higher in patients who did not need treatment for rejection in the first year (1.4 vs. 1.3, p < 0.01). Most patients who did not require anti-rejection treatment underwent heart transplantation during the new allocation era, while less than half of the patients who required treatment underwent transplantation after the new allocation policy implementation (65% vs. 49%, p < 0.001). Patients who needed rejection treatment in the first year had a higher risk of unadjusted 1 year (HR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.88-2.70; p < 0.001), 5 year (HR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.60-1.79; p < 0.001), and 10 year (HR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.41-1.54, p < 0.001) mortality, and this was confirmed at the adjusted analysis at all three time-points. (4) Conclusions: Medical treatment of acute rejection was associated with significantly increased 1 year mortality compared to patients who did not require anti-rejection therapy. The higher risk of mortality was confirmed at a 10 year follow-up. Further studies and newer follow-up data are required to investigate the role of anti-rejection therapy in the heart transplant population.
