Monopropargyloxy-tripropoxy-calix[4]arene 1 was subjected to a propargyl Claisen rearrangement to give unusual calix[3]arene[1]chromene and homocalix[3]arene[1]benzofuran macrocycles. Quantum mechanical density functional theory calculations indicated that an initial [3,3] sigmatropic reaction affords a highly reactive allene intermediate, stabilized by two main diradical pathways leading to six- and five-membered oxygenated rings. In the presence of a n-butylammonium guest, calix[3]-arene[1]chromane 6 forms two stereoisomeric complexes stabilized by +N−H···O and cation···π interactions.

A multistable molecular switching system based on an anthracene-extended bis-thiaxanthylidene with three individually addressable states that can be interconverted by electrochemical, thermal, and photochemical reactions is reported. Besides reversible switching between an open-shell diradical- and a closed-shell electronic configuration, our findings include a third dicationic state and control by multiple actuators. This dicationic state with an orthogonal conformation can be switched electrochemically with the neutral open-shell triplet state with orthogonal conformation, which was characterized by EPR. The remarkably stable diradical shows kinetic stability as a result of a significant activation barrier for isomerization to a more stable neutral closed-shell folded geometry. We ascribe this activation barrier of ΔG‡(293 K) = 25.7 kcal mol-1 to steric hindrance in the fjord region of the overcrowded alkene structure. The folded closed-shell state can be converted back to the diradical state by irradiation with 385 nm. The folded state can also be oxidized to the dicationic state. These types of molecules with multiple switchable states and in particular stable diradicals show great potential in the design of new functional materials such as memory devices, logic gates, and OFETs.

Most organic semiconductors have closed-shell electronic structures, however, studies have revealed open-shell character emanating from design paradigms such as narrowing the bandgap and controlling the quinoidal-aromatic resonance of the π-system. A fundamental challenge is understanding and identifying the molecular and electronic basis for the transition from a closed- to open-shell electronic structure and connecting the physicochemical properties with (opto)electronic functionality. Here, we report donor-acceptor organic semiconductors comprised of diketopyrrolopyrrole and naphthobisthiadiazole acceptors and various electron-rich donors commonly utilized in constructing high-performance organic semiconductors. Nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, single-crystal X-ray studies, and computational investigations connect the bandgap, π-extension, structural, and electronic features with the emergence of various degrees of diradical character. This work systematically demonstrates the widespread diradical character in the classical donor-acceptor organic semiconductors and provides distinctive insights into their ground state structure-property relationship., The classical narrow bandgap donor-acceptor organic semiconductors show great application potential in organic electronics, bio-imaging and other fields. Here, the authors systematically and rigorously demonstrate their open-shell diradical character via experimental and theoretical investigation.

Enediynes are widely studied to understand their cycloaromatization and the trapping of the resulting p-dehydrobenzene diradical. However, few model substrates are known, and they are hard to synthesize and difficult to handle. Herein we report cyclohexeno[3,4]cyclodec-1,5-diyne-3-ene as a convenient model for studying the reactivity of enediynes. It can be easily synthesized from 1,2-diethynylcyclohexene and 1,4-diiodobutane. It is a solid that is stable at room temperature. In solution the p-dehydrobenzene diradical derived from its cycloaromatization can be trapped by nucleophiles. The rate-limiting step is the cyclization, which is slightly slower than that of the parent cyclodec-1,5-diyne-3-ene but faster than that of its benzo analogue, consistent with the distances between the reacting carbon atoms.

Roussi's landmark work on the generation of 1,3-dipoles from tertiary amine N-oxides has not reached its full potential since its underlying mechanism is neither well explored nor understood. Two competing mechanisms were previously proposed to explain the transformation involving either an iminium ion or a diradical intermediate. Our investigation has revealed an alternative mechanistic pathway that explains experimental results and provides significant insights to guide the creation of new N-oxide reagents beyond tertiary alkylamines for direct synthetic transformations. Truhlar's M06-2x functional and Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory with Dunning's [jul,aug]-cc-pv[D,T]z basis sets and discrete-continuum solvation models were employed to determine activation enthalpies and structures. During these mechanistic explorations, we discovered a unique multi-ion bridged pathway resulting from the rate-determining step, which was energetically more favorable than other alternate mechanisms. This newly proposed mechanism contains no electrophilic intermediates, strengthening the reaction potential by broadening the reagent scope and limiting the possible side reactions. This thoroughly defined general mechanism supports a more direct route for improving the use of N-oxides in generating azomethine ylide-dilithium oxide complexes with expanded functional group tolerance and breadth of chemistry.

The potential energy surfaces of the Vinylogous Wolff Rearrangement, an alternative process for the Wolff Rearrangement that takes place β,γ‐unsaturated diazoketones have been fully explored employing M062X model chemistry and in a complementary task by means of the CASSCF method. The NBO analysis has been invoked to reveal the alternations of orbital occupancies and their stabilization energies through some of the critical structures located on the pathways. The calculations establish a two steps process for each pathway involving a second higher energy transition state that seems likely to be the rate determining step in agreement with experimental results. Energy analysis indicates more feasibility of the pathway including diradical intermediate. The most striking feature of the study concerns the finding out a transition state providing a channel in between two pathways through interconversion of the two keys bicyclo[2.1.0]pentanone and diradical intermediates., Two competing reaction pathways of Vinylogous Wolff Rearrangement of β,γ‐Unsaturated α’‐Diazo Ketone into of β,γ‐Unsaturated Ketene have been explored. The calculations establish a two steps rearrangement for each pathway. The very low energy barriers for first transition states are remarkable. The second step of pathway B has lower energy barrier than pathway A. The interconversion of the two intermediates investigated and reasoned that the conversion of bicyclo[2.1.0] pentanone into diradical requires 8.09 Kcal mol−1 to be proceed.

According to the Aufbau principle, singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) are energetically higher lying than a highest doubly occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in the electronically ground state of radicals. However, in the last decade, SOMO-HOMO-converted species have been reported in a limited group of radicals, such as distonic anion radicals and nitroxides. In this study, SOMO-HOMO conversion was observed in triplet 2,2-difluorocyclopentane-1,3-diyl diradicals DR3F1, DR4F1, and 2-fluorocyclopentante-1,3-diyl diradical DR3HF1, which contain the anthracyl unit at the remote position. The high HOMO energy in the anthracyl moiety and the low-lying SOMO-1 due to the fluoro-substituent effect are the key to the SOMO-HOMO conversion phenomenon. Furthermore, the cation radical DR3F1+ generated through the one-electron oxidation of DR3F1 was found to be a SOMO-HOMO-converted monoradical.

This work describes the synthesis and properties of a dicyanomethylene‐substituted indolo[3,2‐b]carbazole diradical ICz‐CN. This quinoidal system dimerises almost completely to (ICz‐CN)2, which contains two long C(sp3)−C(sp3) σ‐bonds between the dicyanomethylene units. The minor open‐shell ICz‐CN component in the solid‐state mixture was identified by EPR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and UV–visible spectroelectrochemical data, as well as comparison with reference monomer ICz‐Br reveal that the nature of the one‐electron oxidation of (ICz‐CN)2 at ambient temperature and ICz‐CN at elevated temperature is very similar in all these compounds due to the prevailing localization of their HOMO on the ICz backbone. The peculiar cathodic behaviour reflects the co‐existence of (ICz‐CN)2 and ICz‐CN. The involvement of the dicyanomethylene groups stabilizes the close‐lying LUMO and LUMO+1 of (ICz‐CN)2 and especially ICz‐CN compared to ICz‐Br, resulting in a distinctive cathodic response at low overpotentials. Differently from neutral ICz‐CN, its radical anion and dianion are remarkably stable under ambient conditions. The UV/Vis(–NIR) electronic transitions in parent (ICz‐CN)2 and ICz‐CN and their different redox forms have been assigned convincingly with the aid of TD‐DFT calculations. The σ‐bond in neutral (ICz‐CN)2 is cleaved in solution and in the solid‐state upon soft external stimuli (temperature, pressure), showing a strong chromism from light yellow to blue–green. Notably, in the solid state, the monomeric diradical species is predominantly formed under high hydrostatic pressure (>1 GPa). The first SnI diradical [(ADCPh)Sn]2 (4) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADCPh={CN(Dipp)}2CPh; Dipp=2,6‐iPr2C6H3) scaffold has been isolated as a green crystalline solid by KC8 reduction of the corresponding bis‐chlorostannylene [(ADCPh)SnCl]2 (3). The six‐membered C4Sn2‐ring of 4 containing six π‐electrons shows a diatropic ring current, thus 4 may also be regarded as the first 1,4‐distannabenzene derivative. DFT calculations suggest an open‐shell singlet (OS) ground state of 4 with a remarkably small singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEOS–T=4.4 kcal mol−1), which is consistent with CASSCF (ΔES–T=6.6 kcal mol−1 and diradical character y=37 %) calculations. The diradical 4 splits H2 at room temperature to yield the bis‐hydridostannylene [(ADCPh)SnH]2 (5). Further reactivity of 4 has been studied with PhSeSePh and MeOTf., A 1,4‐distannabenzene derivative 4 with two‐coordinated SnI atoms has been isolated as a green crystalline solid. The ground state of 4 is an open‐shell singlet (OS) with the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE OS–T) of 4.4 kcal mol−1 (according to CASSCF, ΔE S–T=6.6 kcal mol−1). Consequently, 4 exhibits a half‐field EPR signal at 100 K and undergoes H2 splitting at room temperature to quantitatively yield the SnII hydride 5 as an orange solid.

Guanine is the most susceptible base to oxidation damage induced by reactive oxygen species including singlet oxygen (1O2, 1Δg). We clarify whether the first step of guanine oxidation in B−DNA proceeds via either a zwitterionic or a diradical intermediate. The free energy profiles are calculated by means of a combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) method coupled with the adaptive biasing force (ABF) method. To describe the open‐shell electronic structure of 1O2 correctly, the broken‐symmetry spin‐unrestricted density functional theory (BS−UDFT) with an approximate spin projection (AP) correction is applied to the QM region. We find that the effect of spin contamination on the activation and reaction free energies is up to ∼8 kcal mol−1, which is too large to be neglected. The QM(AP−ULC−BLYP)/MM‐based free energy calculations also reveal that the reaction proceeds through a diradical transition state, followed by a conversion to a zwitterionic intermediate. Our computed activation energy of 5.2 kcal mol−1 matches experimentally observed range (0∼6 kcal mol−1)., Realistic (free energy) profile: We demonstrate how singlet oxygen reacts with guanine in B−DNA by means of the spin‐projected QM(AP−ULC−BLYP)/MM free energy simulations. The present approach gives a realistic free energy profile, which agrees well with experimental findings. The rate‐limiting syn‐addition of 1O2 is found to proceed via a diradical transition state, followed by the smooth conversion from the open‐shell surface to the closed‐shell one.

The aromaticity of cyclic 4n pi-electron molecules in their first pi pi* triplet state (T-1), labeled Baird aromaticity, has gained growing attention in the past decade. Here we explore computationally the limitations of T-1 state Baird aromaticity in macrocyclic compounds, [n]CM's, which are cyclic oligomers of four different monocycles (M = p-phenylene (PP), 2,5-linked furan (FU), 1,4-linked cyclohexa-1,3-diene (CHD), and 1,4-linked cyclopentadiene (CPD)). We strive for conclusions that are general for various DFT functionals, although for macrocycles with up to 20 pi-electrons in their main conjugation paths we find that for their T-1 states single-point energies at both canonical UCCSD(T) and approximative DLPNO-UCCSD(T) levels are lowest when based on UB3LYP over UM06-2X and UCAM-B3LYP geometries. This finding is in contrast to what has earlier been observed for the electronic ground state of expanded porphyrins. Yet, irrespective of functional, macrocycles with 2,5-linked furans ([n]CFU's) retain Baird aromaticity until larger n than those composed of the other three monocycles. Also, when based on geometric, electronic and energetic aspects of aromaticity, a (3)[n]CFU with a specific n is more strongly Baird-aromatic than the analogous (3)[n]CPP while the magnetic indices tell the opposite. To construct large T-1 state Baird-aromatic [n]CM's, the design should be such that the T-1 state Baird aromaticity of the macrocyclic perimeter dominates over a situation with local closed-shell Hiickel aromaticity of one or a few monocycles and semilocalized triplet diradical character. Monomers with lower Hiickel aromaticity in S-0 than benzene (e.g., furan) that do not impose steric congestion are preferred. Structural confinement imposed by, e.g., methylene bridges is also an approach to larger Baird-aromatic macrocycles. Finally, by using the Zilberg-Haas description of T-1 state aromaticity, we reveal the analogy to the Bickel aromaticity of the corresponding closed-shell dications yet observe stronger Hiickel aromaticity in the macrocyclic dications than Baird aromaticity in the T-1 states of the neutral macrocycles.

A highly regioselective and diastereoselective [2 + 2] cross-photocycloaddition between electron-poor and electron-rich/electron-neutral alkenes under visible-light irradiation was developed. In the absence of an external photocatalyst, additive and solvent, the substrates 1 and 4 reacted with rigid cyclic alkoxyethenes to generate cis-anti-head-to-head heterocoupled [2 + 2] products in high yields with regiospecificity and good diastereoselectivity. Meanwhile, the reactions of 1 and 4 with (Z)- and (E)-1,2-diphenylethenes yielded the desired products in good yields with a high dr. It is important to note that no geometric isomerization of olefins was observed during the reaction. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations suggested that 1 and 4 having ortho-ethynyl and cyano groups as a self-photocatalyst play a very important role in the reaction and a five-membered ring diradical intermediate (Int1) was formed via an intramolecular radical addition. The obtained regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity were confirmed by X-ray structural analysis of the representative products.

Stable organic semiconductors (OSCs) with a high-spin ground-state can profoundly impact emerging technologies such as organic magnetism, spintronics, and medical imaging. Over the last decade, there has been a significant effort to design π-conjugated materials with unpaired spin centers. Here, we report new donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers comprising cyclopentadithiophene and cyclopentadiselenophene donors with benzobisthiadiazole (BBT) and iso-BBT acceptors. Density functional theory calculations show that the BBT-based polymers display a decreasing singlet–triplet energy gap with increasing oligomer chain length, with degenerate singlet and triplet states for a N = 8 repeat unit. Furthermore, a considerable distance between the unpaired electrons with a pure diradical character disrupts the π-bond covalency and localizes the unpaired spins at the polymer ends. However, replacing the BBT acceptor with iso-BBT leads to a closed-shell configuration with a low-spin ground-state and a localized spin density on the polymer cores. This study shows the significance of the judicious choice of π-conjugated scaffolds in generating low- (S = 0) and high-spin (S = 1) ground-states in the neutral form, by modulation of spin topology in extended π-conjugated D–A polymers for emergent optoelectronic applications.

Two-electron oxidation of five aniline-based compounds 4,4′′-p/m-terphenyldiamines afforded a class of terphenyldiamine dications 12+–52+. Their electronic structures were systematically investigated by theoretical calculations and various experiments, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements. p-Terphenyldiamine dications 12+–32+ are open-shell singlets in the ground state with large singlet–triplet energy gaps. The inherent instability of dication 42+ precludes the determination of its ground state, whereas the observed linear Curie plot for m-terphenyldiamine dication 52+ indicates that its ground state is triplet. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEOS–T) value is 1.27 kcal mol−1 for 42+ and 1.10 kcal mol−1 for 52+. This work provides the first examples of isolable aniline-based diradical dications.

The state-specific Brillouin-Wigner multireference perturbation theory [which employs Jeziorski-Monkhorst parametrization of the wave function] using improved virtual orbitals, denoted as IVO-BWMRPT, is applied to calculate excitation energies (EEs) for methylene, ethylene, trimethylenemethane, and benzyne systems exhibiting various degrees of diradical character. In IVO-BWMRPT, all of the parameters appearing in the wave function ansatz are optimized for a specific electronic state. For these systems, the IVO-BWMRPT method provides EEs that are in close agreement with the benchmark results and experiments, where available, indicating that the method does not introduce imbalance in the target-specific treatment of closed- and open-shell states involved. The good performance of the present methodology is primarily related to structural compactness of the formalism. Overall, present findings are encouraging for both further development of the approach and chemical applications on the energy differences of strongly correlated systems.

We explored the mechanism and the origin of chemoselectivity of the manganese porphyrin-catalyzed aliphatic C–H isocyanation reaction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this reaction, a diradical intermediate complex of a hydroxomanganese porphyrin and a substrate-derived radical is formed by the H-abstraction process. Then the axial ligand exchange of OH with NCO leads to a di-isocyanate manganese porphyrin intermediate, which provides the possibility for the NCO-rebound process to form the alkyl isocyanate product. The competition of different axial ligands rebounding to substrate-derived radicals is the origin of different products. The computational results suggest that the NCO-rebound pathway is more favorable than the OH-rebound pathway by 2.7 kcal mol−1, which is consistent with the experimental results that the major product is an alkyl isocyanate instead of the oxygenation product. The NCO-rebound pathway through the di-isocyanate manganese porphyrin intermediate is more favorable than that through the hydroxomanganese porphyrin by 5.9 kcal mol−1 due to the stronger trans effect of the axial ligand NCO compared to OH. We also found that the electron-donating aryl ligand can promote the C–H bond isocyanation. The mechanism and the controlling factors are also applicable to the manganese porphyrin-catalyzed C–H bond azidation reaction.

Diradical character and excited-state aromaticity serve as guidelines to identify molecules that show nonlinear optical properties. Cumulenes are known to have small singlet-triplet gaps resulting in significant diradical character. Herein, we report a computational investigation on the electronic structure and excited-state properties of cumulenes of different lengths and with various terminal carbene groups. Intriguingly, cumulenes with an even number of cumulative double bonds, which barely have been studied experimentally, are predicted to be thermodynamically more stable than their odd counterparts. We propose that this is due to the stabilizing effect of electron delocalization in the helical Möbius-type frontier orbitals. Accordingly, we delineate how to control the energies of the excited states by the choice of carbene and length of the cumulene. We find that π-acceptor carbenes decrease the diradical character, whereas donors as well as captodative substitution or potentially a biscationic charge leads to an open-shell ground state. We also predict that bent allenes are better in stabilizing organic radicals than carbenes. Eventually, we identify suitable candidates for experimental endeavors toward new singlet fission molecules.

The investigation of π-conjugated diradical compounds, featuring radical centers in the ground state, is key to understanding the nature of chemical bonds.[1] Occasionally, these systems can form long σ C-C bonds between two unpaired electrons resulting in macrocyclic or staircase oligomers or polymers by self-assembly processes. Furthermore, these new C-C bonds are longer than an ordinary bond between two sp3 carbon resulting in reversible dissociation/formation behavior between isolated radical species and cyclophane structures. Therefore, these materials are potential building blocks for dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC).[2] Hereinto, we present an experimental and theoretical study of carbazole and indolocarbazole-based diradicals (Figure 1) with dicyanomethylene (DCM) groups in different positions (para-DCM or meta-DCM) to identify new building blocks to obtain multi-responsive materials.[3-5] To this end, we investigated the dynamic interconversion between the isolated diradical and the cyclophane structures under external stimuli such as temperature, pressure and so on. Specifically, our main aim is to study how the DCM substitution and the elongation of the conjugated core affect the diradical character and to understand the connection between this parameter and the cyclophanes stability. Organic diradicals are uncommon species that have been intensely studied for their unique properties and potential applicability in a diverse range of innovative fields. While there is a growing class of stable and well characterized organic diradicals, there has been recent focus on how diradical character can be controlled or modulated with external stimuli. Here we demonstrate that a diiron complex bridged by the doubly oxidized ligand tetrathiafulvalene-2,3,6,7-tetrathiolate (TTFtt2−) undergoes a thermally induced Fe-centered spin-crossover which yields significant diradical character on TTFtt2−. UV-vis-Near-IR, Mössbauer, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies with magnetometry, crystallography, and advanced theoretical treatments suggest that this diradical character arises from a shrinking TTFtt2− π-manifold from the Fe(II)-centered spin-crossover. The TTFtt2− centered diradical is predicted to have a singlet ground state by theory and variable temperature EPR. This unusual phenomenon demonstrates that inorganic spin transitions can be used to modulate organic diradical character.

Metallonitrenes (M–N) are complexes with a subvalent atomic nitrogen ligand that have been proposed as key reactive intermediates in nitrogen atom transfer reactions. However, in contrast to the common classes of nitride complexes (M≡N) and organic nitrenes (R–N), structurally and spectroscopically well defined ‘authentic’ metallonitrenes with a monovalent atomic nitrogen ligand remain elusive. Here we report that the photolysis of a platinum(ii) pincer azide complex enabled the crystallographic, spectroscopic, magnetic and computational characterization of a metallonitrene that is best described as a singly bonded atomic nitrogen diradical ligand bound to platinum(ii). The photoproduct exhibits selective C–H, B–H and B–C nitrogen atom insertion reactivity. Despite the subvalent metallonitrene character, mechanistic analysis for aldehyde C–H amidation shows nucleophilic reactivity of the N-diradical ligand. Ambiphilic reactivity of the metallonitrene is indicated by reactions with CO and PMe3 to form isocyanate and phosphoraneiminato platinum(ii) complexes, respectively. Transient metallonitrenes (M–N) have been proposed as key intermediates in nitrogen atom transfer reactions, but well-defined examples have remained elusive. Now, a platinum complex with an atomic nitrogen ligand, best described as a subvalent nitrogen diradical singly bonded to a platinum(ii) ion (Pt–N), has been isolated and shows ambiphilic reactivity.

Reactions of α,β‐unsaturated aromatic thioketones 1 (thiochalcones) with Fe3(CO)12 leading to η4‐1‐thia‐1,3‐diene iron tricarbonyl complexes 2, [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics 3, and the thiopyrane adduct 4 are described. Obtained products have been characterized by X‐ray crystallography and by computational methods. Completely regio‐ and diastereoselective formation of the five‐membered ring system in products 3, containing four stereogenic centers, can be explained by an unprecedented, stepwise (3+2)‐cycloaddition of two thiochalcone molecules mediated by Fe3(CO)12. Quantum chemical calculations aimed at elucidation of the reaction mechanism, suggest that the formal (3+2)‐cycloaddition proceeds via sequential intramolecular radical transfer events upon homolytic cleavage of one carbon‐sulfur bond leading to a diradical intermediate., Making the rounds: A series of new cyclopentenes was obtained from thiochalcones via a Fe0‐mediated formal (3+2)‐cycloaddition. Reactions occurred diastereoselectively and the postulated reaction mechanism was elucidated by a combined experimental and theoretical approach.

he diradical and multiradical characters of a large and diverse set of 241 predicted singlet fission candidates are determined by multiconfigurational wavefunction methods, specifically natural orbital occupation number (NOON) analysis using the CASSCF method. The ascertained multiradical character strongly supports the current prediction that a good singlet fission candidate, independent of its structure, will tend to be of the weak biradicaloid class as well as having very little tetraradical character. Although the rule remains robust, it is not absolute as a small portion of our potential candidates are predicted to be closed shell. Additionally, a smaller handful of outliers with apparent tetraradical characters are identified, suggesting there may be the possibility, albeit rare, of singlet fission amongst weak tetraradicaloids.

Summary A fundamental understanding of the inherent electronic and magnetic properties of open-shell diradicaloids is essential so that these properties can be modified to create molecules that meet the potential needs of industry. However, there have been very few attempts to date to systematically accomplish this in diradicaloid compounds. Here, we present the synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational investigation of a series of molecules based on the diindeno[1,2-b:1′,2′-g]anthracene framework. Calculations suggest that by altering the transfer integral term, tab, we are able to manipulate the diradical character and, thus, ΔEST within this series of molecules. Experimentally determined values by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry show that we can effectively “tune” ΔEST of the five derivatives within a narrow 1.6 kcal mol−1 range.

An active-space variational calculation of the two-electron reduced density matrix (2-RDM) is derived and implemented where the active orbitals are correlated within the pair approximation. The pair approximation considers only doubly occupied configurations of the wave function, which enables the calculation of the 2-RDM at a computational cost of [Formula: see text]. Calculations were performed both with the pair active-space configuration interaction (PASCI) method and the pair active-space self-consistent field (PASSCF) method. The latter includes a mixing of the active and inactive orbitals through unitary transformations. The active-space pair 2-RDM method is applied to the nitrogen molecule, the p-benzyne diradical, a newly synthesized biscobalt complex, and the nitrogenase cofactor FeMoco. The FeMoco molecule is treated in a [120,120] active space. Fractional occupations are recovered in each of these systems, indicating the presence of strong electron correlation.

Quinoidal azaacenes with almost pure diradical character (y=0.95 to y=0.99) were synthesized. All compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior investigated by EPR and NMR spectroscopy, and SQUID measurements, revealing thermally populated triplet states with an extremely low‐energy gap ΔE ST′ of 0.58 to 1.0 kcal mol−1. The species are persistent in solution (half‐life≈14–21 h) and in the solid state they are stable for weeks., Best of two worlds: Lateral fusion of azaacenes onto a quinoidal system furnishes stable diradicals with a radical character (y) of up to 0.99. All compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior as determined by EPR and NMR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements, revealing thermally populated triplet states with an extremely low‐energy gap ΔE ST of 0.58 to 1.0 kcal mol−1. The species are persistent in solution (half‐life≈14–21 h), and they are stable for weeks in the solid state.

Herein, we present a new class of singlet fission (SF) materials based on diradicaloids of carbene scaffolds, namely cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs). Our modular approach allows the tuning of two key SF criteria: the steric factor and the diradical character. In turn, we modified the energy landscapes of excited states in a systematic manner to accommodate the needs for SF. We report the first example of intermolecular SF in solution by dimer self‐assembly at cryogenic temperatures., Diradicaloids derived from cyclic carbenes are singlet‐fission molecules with exceptionally large diradicaloid character, which self‐assemble at cryogenic temperatures in solution.

Thermally switchable redox properties have been reported to be due to a change in the spin state of newly designed overcrowded ethylenes, which can adopt closed-shell folded and open-shell twisted forms. In this study, tetrathienylanthraquinodimethane derivatives were designed to be in thermal equilibrium between a more stable folded form and less stable but more donating twisted diradical in solution, so that the oxidation potential can be controlled by heating/cooling. This is the first example of a switching of redox properties based on a thermally equilibrated twisted diradical, which can be more readily oxidized to the twisted dication.

Phenols are ubiquitous environmental pollutants, whose biotransformation involving phenol coupling catalyzed by cytochromes P450 may produce more lipophilic and toxic metabolites. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to explore the debated phenol-coupling mechanisms, taking triclosan as a model substrate. We find that a diradical pathway facilitated by compound I and protonated compound II of P450 is favored vs alternative radical addition or electron-transfer mechanisms. The identified diradical coupling resembles a "two-state reactivity" from compound I characterized by significantly high rebound barriers of the phenoxy radicals, which can be formulated into three equations for calculating the ratio [coupling]/[hydroxylation]. A higher barrier for rebound than for H-abstraction in high-spin triclosan can facilitate the phenoxy radical dissociation and thus enable phenol coupling, while H-abstraction/radical rebound causing phenol hydroxylation via minor rebound barriers mostly occurs via the low-spin state. Therefore, oxidation of triclosan by P450 fits the first equation with a ratio [coupling]/[hydroxylation] of 1:4, consistent with experimental data indicating different extents of triclosan coupling (6-40%). The high rebound barrier of phenoxy radicals, as a key for the mechanistic identification of phenol coupling vs hydroxylation, originates from their weak electron donor ability due to spin aromatic delocalization. We envision that the revealed mechanism can be extended to the cross-coupling reactions between different phenolic pollutants, and the coupling reactions of several other aromatic pollutants, to infer unknown metabolites.

A novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecule exhibiting manifold zwitterionic, diradical and quinoidal characteristics is designed and synthesized. Via reversible protonation, its pH-responsive magnetic properties are demonstrated., By integrating azulene with a quinoid moiety, a novel non-alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecule BCHF1 exhibiting manifold zwitterionic, quinoidal and diradical behaviors is designed and synthesized. Its zwitterionic feature is evidenced by the changes shown by the 1H-NMR and absorption spectra when the molecule undergoes reversible protonation and deprotonation reactions at varied pH. The diradical facet, manifesting a small singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔES–T), is characterized with a paramagnetic resonance signal detected by the EPR spectroscopy at room temperature. As the diradical properties are not observed in the protonated form, BCHF1+H+, a pH-controlled reversible magnetic switching behavior is illustrated by monitoring the on and off cycles of EPR signals upon successively adding bases and acids to a solution or exposing a thin film of BCHF1+H+ to base vapor followed by acid vapor.

Thiele, Chichibabin and Müller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekulé diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gaps are ΔES–T = −27.96, −3.70, −0.37 kcal mol−1, respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the π-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p′-biphenylene vs. p,p′′-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the π-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele's hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Müller's hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekulé diradicaloids., We report the synthesis of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-scaffold based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. Studies support that the singlet-triplet energy gap depends on the π-conjugated spacer between the ADC scaffolds.

A hydrophobic diradical-platinum(ii) complex was solubilized in aqueous solutions by using bovine serum albumin and exhibited photothermal conversion under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. The complex was introduced into cancer cells and induced cell death upon absorption of NIR. These results imply that the complex can function as a photothermal therapeutic agent.

Of particular interest in radiation-induced charge transfer processes in DNA is the extent of hole localization immediately after ionization and subsequent relaxation. To address this, we considered double stranded oligomers containing guanine (G) and 8-oxoguanine (8OG), i.e., ds(5'-GGG-3') and ds(5'-G8OGG-3') in B-DNA conformation. Using DFT, we calculated a variety of properties, viz., vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials, spin density distributions in oxidized stacks, solvent and solute reorganization energies and one-electron oxidation potential (E0) in the aqueous phase. Calculations for the vertical state of the -GGG- cation radical showed that the spin was found mainly (67%) on the middle G. However, upon relaxation to the adiabatic -GGG- cation radical, the spin localized (96%) on the 5'-G, as observed in experiments. Hole localizations on the middle G and 3'-G were higher in energy by 0.5 kcal mol-1 and 0.4 kcal mol-1, respectively, than that of 5'-G. In the -G8OGG- cation radical, the spin localized only on the 8OG in both vertical and adiabatic states. The calculated vertical ionization potentials of -GGG- and -G8OGG- stacks were found to be lower than that of the vertical ionization potential of a single G in DNA. The calculated E0 values of -GGG- and -G8OGG- stacks are 1.15 and 0.90 V, respectively, which owing to stacking effects are substantially lower than the corresponding experimental E0 values of their monomers (1.49 and 1.18 V, respectively). SOMO to HOMO level switching is observed in these oxidized stacks. Consequently, our calculations predict that local double oxidations in DNA will form triplet diradical states, which are especially significant for high LET radiations.

An N-heterocyclic-carbene-ligated 3-benzoborepin with a bridged structure has been synthesized by double radical trans-hydroboration of benzo[3,4]cycloundec-3-ene-1,5-diyne with an N-heterocyclic carbene borane. The thermal reaction of the NHC-ligated borepin at 150 °C gives an isolable NHC-boranorcaradiene. Experiments and density functional theory calculations support a mechanism whereby the borepin initially rearranges to a boranorcaradiene by a thermal 6π-electrocyclic reaction. This is followed by 1,5-boron shift to give a rearranged boranorcaradiene. This shift occurs with stereoinversion at boron through a transition state with open-shell diradical character. This is the first example of the isolation of a boranorcaradiene from a thermal reaction of a borepin.

We report an air-stable diradical dication of chiral D(2)-symmetric conjoined bis[5]diazahelicene with unprecedented high spin (triplet) ground state, singlet triplet energy gap, ΔE(ST) = 0.3 kcal mol(−1). The diradical dication possesses closed-shell (Kekulé) resonance forms with 16 π-electron perimeters. The diradical dication is monomeric in dibutylphthalate (DBP) matrix at low temperatures, and it has a half-life of more than two weeks at ambient conditions in the presence of excess oxidant. A barrier of ~35 kcal mol(−1) has been experimentally determined for inversion of configuration in the neutral conjoined bis[5]diazahelicene, while the inversion barriers in its radical cation and diradical dication were predicted by the DFT computations to be within a few kcal mol(−1) of that in the neutral species. Chiral HPLC resolution provides the chiral D(2)-symmetric conjoined bis[5]diazahelicene, enriched in (P,P)- or (M,M)-enantiomers. The enantiomerically enriched triplet diradical dication is configurationally stable for 48 h at room temperature, thus providing the lower limit for inversion barrier of configuration of 27 kcal mol(−1). The enantiomers of conjoined bis[5]diazahelicene and its diradical dication show strong chirooptical properties that are comparable to [6]helicene or carbon-sulfur [7]helicene, as determined by the anisotropy factors, |g| = |Δε|/ε = 0.007 at 348 nm (neutral) and |g| = 0.005 at 385 nm (diradical dication). DFT computations of the radical cation suggest that SOMO and HOMO energy levels are near-degenerate.

The recent accomplishments in the design of molecular nanowires characterised by an increasing conductance with length has embarked the origin of extraordinary new family of molecular junctions referred to as "anti-ohmic" wires. Herein, this highly desirable, non-classical behavior, has been examined for the longer enough molecules exhibiting pronounced diradical character in their ground state within the unrestricted DFT formalism with spin and spatial symmetry breaking. We demonstrate that highly conjugated acenes signals higher resistance in open-shell singlet (OSS) configuration as compared to their closed-shell counterparts. This anomaly has been further put to proof for experimentally certified cumulene wires, which reveals phenomenal modulation in the transport characteristics such that an increasing conductance is observed in closed-shell limit, while higher cumulenes in OSS ground state yields a regular decay of conductance.

Narrow bandgap donor-acceptor organic semiconductors are generally considered to show closed-shell singlet ground state and their radicals are reported as impurities, polarons, charge transfer state monoradical or defects. Herein, we reported the open-shell singlet diradical electronic ground state of two diketopyrrolopyrrole-based compounds Flu-TDPP and DTP-TDPP via the combination of variable temperature NMR, variable temperature electron spin spectroscopy (ESR), superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, and theoretical calculations. It is observed that the quinoid-diradical character is significantly enhanced in aggregation state because of the limitation of intramolecular rotation. Consequently, we propose a mechanism of aggregation-induced radical to understand the driving force of the open-shell diradical formation of DTP-TDPP based on the ESR spectroscopy test in different proportions of mixed solvents. Our results demonstrate the thermally-excited triplet state for donor-acceptor organic semiconductors, providing a novel view to comprehend the intrinsic chemical structure of donor-acceptor organic semiconductors, as well as the potential electronic transition process between ground state and excited state.

π−conjugated radicals have great promise for use in organic spintronics, however, the mechanisms of spin relaxation and mobility related to radical structural flexibility remain unexplored. Here, we describe a dumbbell shape azobenzene diradical and correlate its solid-state flexibility with spin relaxation and mobility. We employ a combination of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to determine the molecular changes with temperature. Heating leads to: i) a modulation of the spin distribution; and ii) a “normal” quinoidal → aromatic transformation at low temperatures driven by the intramolecular rotational vibrations of the azobenzene core and a “reversed” aromatic → quinoidal change at high temperatures activated by an azobenzene bicycle pedal motion amplified by anisotropic intermolecular interactions. Thermal excitation of these vibrational states modulates the diradical electronic and spin structures featuring vibronic coupling mechanisms that might be relevant for future design of high spin organic molecules with tunable magnetic properties for solid state spintronics., In this manuscript, Negri, Zheng, Casado et al develop a stable and flexible diradical. Using a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques, they show how heating leads to change in the electronic and spin delocalizations ocurring between quinoidal and aromatic forms, and elucidate a unique spin-vibrational coupling.
