In this article, we disrupt extractivist and privileged individualised knowledge production by decentering the human ‘I’ to ‘we’ through storying. Inspired by LeGuin (2019) and Haraway’s (2016) narrative baglady figuration, we explore a Baglady storytelling praxis. This means putting to work posthuman theories with the more-than-human, where knowledge-making is generated through the intra-actions of our collective's storying. Starting with the provocation of locking and unlocking, we story to make sense of political and ethical affectivities that disrupt and interrupt everyday materialities and spatialities. From here, we speculate with movements of response-ability as “intra-activism” (Renold & Ringrose, 2017, 631). For us, storying puts in motion intra-action, speculation, calls to act, relationality, and feminist community building that we frame as intra-storying-activism. Making and re-making stories within intra-storying-activism navigates non-hierarchical post-authorship to re-imagine, speculate with, and trouble the human from extractivist positions. By foregrounding relationality as a multiplying storying, we create playful, dynamic, and generative spaces for knowledge-making as a collective that both welcomes and provokes calls to act.

Information systems success is about understanding and measuring the impact of Information Technology which enables organisations to make intelligent decisions about technological investments (DeLone and McLean, 2003). The objective of this thesis was to understand the factors that contribute to information success of Learning Analytics (LA) systems at Australian universities. This interpretive qualitative research study also sought to understand what factors contributed to learning and teaching outcomes as well as identifying the factors critical to successful implementation and use. While substantial research exists on LA systems and their usages, there are still limited empirical studies that examine the success of LA implementations, as many Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are still in very early stages of their LA system implementations. This article asks the question of what documentation is doing, rather than what documentation means in the context of early childhood education. By focusing on the documentation of a young child’s playful exploration with water that inhabits a classroom wall, new materialist theories are put to work to ponder documentation’s agentive capacities and intra-activities. What is argued is that documentation is inviting powerful creating and resisting actions that offer senses of belonging for a child. Consequently, it is proposed that teachers both shift from and overlay matters of fact and matters of concern. The implication is that documentation can be put to work in influential ways when its actions (rather than meanings) within spaces are foregrounded. This article offers original contributions to contemporary debates regarding agentive readings of documentation practices that can influence forms of ethical and flourishing pedagogies in a policy climate that can otherwise confine.

A strategy for the UK's forest genetic resources

The dyadic nature of the teacher-child relationship is recognized as a significant factor in young children’s learning experiences. Less is known about how teachers’ own personal and professional identities and experiences influence their construction of teacher-child relationships. This article extends upon previous studies by exploring the concept of a networked dimension of teachers’ personal relationships and how they inform their perceptions of their relationships with children within a dynamic system. Through the interpretation of four teachers’ life history narratives and utilizing the lens of development systems theory, we present original insights regarding how they understand their personal and professional relationships with children. We illuminate how teacher’s lives are open, networked and overlapping in nature and that there are implications for teacher’s initial education and professional development.

We present BeechCOSTe52; a database of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) phenotypic measurements for several traits related to fitness measured in genetic trials planted across Europe. The dataset was compiled and harmonized during the COST-Action E52 (2006–2010), and subsequently cross-validated to ensure consistency of measurement data among trials and provenances. Phenotypic traits (height, diameter at breast height, basal diameter, mortality, phenology of spring bud burst and autumn–leaf discoloration) were recorded in 38 trial sites where 217 provenances covering the entire distribution of European beech were established in two consecutive series (1993/95 and 1996/98). The recorded data refer to 862,095 measurements of the same trees aged from 2 to 15 years old over multiple years. The BeechCOSTe52 includes phenotypic trait measurements from individual trees measured in an international network of provenance tests compiled by the COST Action E52 (2006 – 2010). It comprises 39 trial sites and 217 provenances covering the distribution of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). The BeechCOSTe52 database provides individual tree phenotypic measurements of height, diameter at breast height, basal diameter, mortality, spring and autumn leaf phenology.

Common walnut (Juglans regia L) is an economically important species cultivated worldwide for its high-quality wood and nuts. It is generally accepted that after the last glaciation J. regia survived and grew in almost completely isolated stands in Asia, and that ancient humans dispersed walnuts across Asia and into new habitats via trade and cultural expansion. The history of walnut in Europe is a matter of debate, however. In this study, we estimated the genetic diversity and structure of 91 Eurasian walnut populations using 14 neutral microsatellites. By integrating fossil pollen, cultural, and historical data with population genetics, and approximate Bayesian analysis, we reconstructed the demographic history of walnut and its routes of dispersal across Europe. The genetic data confirmed the presence of walnut in glacial refugia in the Balkans and western Europe. We conclude that human-mediated admixture between Anatolian and Balkan walnut germplasm started in the Early Bronze Age, and between western Europe and the Balkans in eastern Europe during the Roman Empire. A population size expansion and subsequent decline in northeastern and western Europe was detected in the last five centuries. The actual distribution of walnut in Europe resulted from the combined effects of expansion/contraction from multiple refugia after the Last Glacial Maximum and its human exploitation over the last 5,000 years.

Ash trees (genus Fraxinus, family Oleaceae) are widespread throughout the Northern Hemisphere, but are being devastated in Europe by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, causing ash dieback, and in North America by the herbivorous beetle Agrilus planipennis. Here we sequence the genome of a low-heterozygosity Fraxinus excelsior tree from Gloucestershire, UK, annotating 38,852 protein-coding genes of which 25% appear ash specific when compared with the genomes of ten other plant species. Analyses of paralogous genes suggest a whole-genome duplication shared with olive (Olea europaea, Oleaceae). We also re-sequence 37 F. excelsior trees from Europe, finding evidence for apparent long-term decline in effective population size. Using our reference sequence, we re-analyse association transcriptomic data, yielding improved markers for reduced susceptibility to ash dieback. Surveys of these markers in British populations suggest that reduced susceptibility to ash dieback may be more widespread in Great Britain than in Denmark. We also present evidence that susceptibility of trees to H. fraxineus is associated with their iridoid glycoside levels. This rapid, integrated, multidisciplinary research response to an emerging health threat in a non-model organism opens the way for mitigation of the epidemic.

Common walnut (Juglans regia L) is an economically important species cultivated worldwide for its wood and nuts. It is generally accepted that J. regia survived and grew spontaneously in almost completely isolated stands in its Asian native range after the Last Glacial Maximum. Despite its natural geographic isolation, J. regia evolved over many centuries under the influence of human management and exploitation. We evaluated the hypothesis that the current distribution of natural genetic resources of common walnut in Asia is, at least in part, the product of ancient anthropogenic dispersal, human cultural interactions, and afforestation. Genetic analysis combined with ethno-linguistic and historical data indicated that ancient trade routes such as the Persian Royal Road and Silk Road enabled long-distance dispersal of J. regia from Iran and Trans-Caucasus to Central Asia, and from Western to Eastern China. Ancient commerce also disrupted the local spatial genetic structure of autochthonous walnut populations between Tashkent and Samarkand (Central- Eastern Uzbekistan), where the northern and central routes of the Northern Silk Road converged. A significant association between ancient language phyla and the genetic structure of walnut populations is reported even after adjustment for geographic distances that could have affected both walnut gene flow and human commerce over the centuries. Beyond the economic importance of common walnut, our study delineates an alternative approach for understanding how the genetic resources of long-lived perennial tree species may be affected by the interaction of geography and human history.

The purpose of this project was to conduct an empirical study that would result in findings that inform systemic policy development aimed at improving tertiary participation and attainment by students from low socioeconomic status (LSES) backgrounds in Queensland. The project focuses on systemic policy, initiatives and programs that encourage tertiary education participation and attainment by individuals from LSES backgrounds, rather than on institution-specific initiatives or programs. While the broad remit was to consider tertiary education participation, the study particularly highlights issues pertaining to LSES student participation and attainment in the higher education sector, given the notable under representation of this demographic subgroup in Australian universities. This study supports the strategic priority of addressing professional skills shortages and innovations aiming to improve human and social capital in the state of Queensland. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of Queensland’s education and training system by maximising participation and attainment by people from LSES backgrounds in higher education, thereby improving their quality of life and future life choices and opportunities. The study addressed the following five research questions: 1. What are the major factors that promote or inhibit participation and attainment in tertiary education by LSES students in Queensland? 2. To what extent do systemic policies or practices(systemic factors) of Queensland’s tertiary education system promote or inhibit participation and attainment by LSES students? That is, what features of Queensland’s tertiary education system have a significant effect on participation and attainment by LSES students? 3. What system policies or practices are found to boost participation and attainment by LSES students in other jurisdictions? 4. What evidence is there to suggest that policies or practices that have boosted participation and attainment by LSE

This thesis is based on the field monitoring of a propped bored pile retaining wall installed in an overconsolidated clay. Pile bending moments, prop loads, pore water pressures and lateral earth pressures were logged automatically at intervals of up to 5 minutes throughout construction (and for 4 years afterwards) and wall deflections were measured during construction, making this the most comprehensive instrumentation project of its kind. The magnitude of the over-read associated with the use of spade cells (used to measure lateral earth and pore water pressures) in overconsolidated deposits was determined by comparing readings from a spade cell aligned to measure vertical stress with the estimated overburden acting on it as the overburden was excavated. This study adds significantly to the previous data as spade cells have not previously been \lsed in the Atherfield Clay, and the performance of spade cells under a known changing load has not previously been measured in the field. Analysis of the changes in lateral stress and pore water pressure during the wall installation process showed significant reductions in horizontal stress during wall installation, reducing the ratio of effective horizontal to effective vertical stress, K, from about 1 to nearly the active condition. Following wall installation there was no further change in horizontal stress over a period of about 10 months, during which time no further construction work took place. Analysis of the data yielded good agreement between pile bending moments estimated from inclinometer and strain gauge measurements in the piles, and the onset of concrete cracking was identified. The components of strain measured in the reinforced concrete props due to shrinkage, creep and applied load were also identified, allowing prop loads to be estimated.
