Automatic generation of discharge summaries presents significant challenges due to the length of clinical documentation, the dispersed nature of patient information, and the diverse terminology used in healthcare. This paper presents a hybrid solution for generating discharge summary sections as part of our participation in the "Discharge Me!" Challenge at the BioNLP 2024 Shared Task. We developed a two-stage generation method using both extractive and abstractive techniques, in which we first apply name entity recognition (NER) to extract key clinical concepts, which are then used as input for a prompt-tuning-based GatorTronGPT model to generate coherent text for two important sections including "Brief Hospital Course" and "Discharge Instructions". Our system was ranked 5th in this challenge, achieving an overall score of 0.284. We introduce Seed-TTS, a family of large-scale autoregressive text-to-speech (TTS) models capable of generating speech that is virtually indistinguishable from human speech. Seed-TTS serves as a foundation model for speech generation and excels in speech in-context learning, achieving performance in speaker similarity and naturalness that matches ground truth human speech in both objective and subjective evaluations. With fine-tuning, we achieve even higher subjective scores across these metrics. Seed-TTS offers superior controllability over various speech attributes such as emotion and is capable of generating highly expressive and diverse speech for speakers in the wild. Furthermore, we propose a self-distillation method for speech factorization, as well as a reinforcement learning approach to enhance model robustness, speaker similarity, and controllability. We additionally present a non-autoregressive (NAR) variant of the Seed-TTS model, named $\text{Seed-TTS}_\text{DiT}$, which utilizes a fully diffusion-based architecture. Unlike previous NAR-based TTS systems, $\text{Seed-TTS}_\text{DiT}$ does not depend on pre-estimated phoneme durations and performs speech generation through end-to-end processing. We demonstrate that this variant achieves comparable performance to the language model-based variant and showcase its effectiveness in speech editing. State-of-the-art neural implicit surface representations have achieved impressive results in indoor scene reconstruction by incorporating monocular geometric priors as additional supervision. However, we have observed that multi-view inconsistency between such priors poses a challenge for high-quality reconstructions. In response, we present NC-SDF, a neural signed distance field (SDF) 3D reconstruction framework with view-dependent normal compensation (NC). Specifically, we integrate view-dependent biases in monocular normal priors into the neural implicit representation of the scene. By adaptively learning and correcting the biases, our NC-SDF effectively mitigates the adverse impact of inconsistent supervision, enhancing both the global consistency and local details in the reconstructions. To further refine the details, we introduce an informative pixel sampling strategy to pay more attention to intricate geometry with higher information content. Additionally, we design a hybrid geometry modeling approach to improve the neural implicit representation. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that NC-SDF outperforms existing approaches in terms of reconstruction quality.

Robotics learning highly relies on human expertise and efforts, such as demonstrations, design of reward functions in reinforcement learning, performance evaluation using human feedback, etc. However, reliance on human assistance can lead to expensive learning costs and make skill learning difficult to scale. In this work, we introduce the Large Language Model Supervised Robotics Text2Skill Autonomous Learning (ARO) framework, which aims to replace human participation in the robot skill learning process with large-scale language models that incorporate reward function design and performance evaluation. We provide evidence that our approach enables fully autonomous robot skill learning, capable of completing partial tasks without human intervention. Cancer treatments are known to introduce cardiotoxicity, negatively impacting outcomes and survivorship. Identifying cancer patients at risk of heart failure (HF) is critical to improving cancer treatment outcomes and safety. This study examined machine learning (ML) models to identify cancer patients at risk of HF using electronic health records (EHRs), including traditional ML, Time-Aware long short-term memory (T-LSTM), and large language models (LLMs) using novel narrative features derived from the structured medical codes. We identified a cancer cohort of 12,806 patients from the University of Florida Health, diagnosed with lung, breast, and colorectal cancers, among which 1,602 individuals developed HF after cancer. The LLM, GatorTron-3.9B, achieved the best F1 scores, outperforming the traditional support vector machines by 39%, the T-LSTM deep learning model by 7%, and a widely used transformer model, BERT, by 5.6%. RAW to sRGB mapping, which aims to convert RAW images from smartphones into RGB form equivalent to that of Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras, has become an important area of research. However, current methods often ignore the difference between cell phone RAW images and DSLR camera RGB images, a difference that goes beyond the color matrix and extends to spatial structure due to resolution variations. Recent methods directly rebuild color mapping and spatial structure via shared deep representation, limiting optimal performance. Inspired by Image Signal Processing (ISP) pipeline, which distinguishes image restoration and enhancement, we present a novel Neural ISP framework, named FourierISP. This approach breaks the image down into style and structure within the frequency domain, allowing for independent optimization. FourierISP is comprised of three subnetworks: Phase Enhance Subnet for structural refinement, Amplitude Refine Subnet for color learning, and Color Adaptation Subnet for blending them in a smooth manner. This approach sharpens both color and structure, and extensive evaluations across varied datasets confirm that our approach realizes state-of-the-art results. In recent RAG approaches, rerankers play a pivotal role in refining retrieval accuracy with the ability of revealing logical relations for each pair of query and text. However, existing rerankers are required to repeatedly encode the query and a large number of long retrieved text. This results in high computational costs and limits the number of retrieved text, hindering accuracy. As a remedy of the problem, we introduce the Efficient Title Reranker via Broadcasting Query Encoder, a novel technique for title reranking that achieves a 20x-40x speedup over the vanilla passage reranker. Furthermore, we introduce Sigmoid Trick, a novel loss function customized for title reranking. Combining both techniques, we empirically validated their effectiveness, achieving state-of-the-art results on all four datasets we experimented with from the KILT knowledge benchmark.

Introduced to enhance the efficiency of large language model (LLM) inference, speculative decoding operates by having a smaller model generate a draft. A larger target model then reviews this draft to align with its output, and any acceptance by the target model results in a reduction of the number of the target model runs, ultimately improving efficiency. However, the drafting process in speculative decoding includes slow autoregressive generation and allocates equal time to generating tokens, irrespective of their importance. These inefficiencies collectively contribute to the suboptimal performance of speculative decoding. To further improve LLM inference, we introduce Cascade Speculative Drafting (CS Drafting), a speculative execution algorithm that incorporates two types of cascades. The Vertical Cascade eliminates autoregressive generation from neural models, while the Horizontal Cascade optimizes time allocation in drafting for improved efficiency. Combining both cascades, CS Drafting achieves up to an 81 percent additional speedup over speculative decoding in our experiments, while maintaining the same output distribution as the target model. The prediction of chemical synthesis pathways plays a pivotal role in materials science research. Challenges, such as the complexity of synthesis pathways and the lack of comprehensive datasets, currently hinder our ability to predict these chemical processes accurately. However, recent advancements in generative artificial intelligence (GAI), including automated text generation and question-answering systems, coupled with fine-tuning techniques, have facilitated the deployment of large-scale AI models tailored to specific domains. In this study, we harness the power of the LLaMA2-7B model and enhance it through a learning process that incorporates 13,878 pieces of structured material knowledge data. This specialized AI model, named MatChat, focuses on predicting inorganic material synthesis pathways. MatChat exhibits remarkable proficiency in generating and reasoning with knowledge in materials science. Although MatChat requires further refinement to meet the diverse material design needs, this research undeniably highlights its impressive reasoning capabilities and innovative potential in the field of materials science. MatChat is now accessible online and open for use, with both the model and its application framework available as open source. This study establishes a robust foundation for collaborative innovation in the integration of generative AI in materials science.

Various optimal gradient-based algorithms have been developed for smooth nonconvex optimization. However, many nonconvex machine learning problems do not belong to the class of smooth functions and therefore the existing algorithms are sub-optimal. Instead, these problems have been shown to satisfy certain generalized-smooth conditions, which have not been well understood in the existing literature. In this paper, we propose a notion of $\alpha$-symmetric generalized-smoothness that extends the existing notions and covers many important functions such as high-order polynomials and exponential functions. We study the fundamental properties and establish descent lemmas for the functions in this class. Then, to solve such a large class of nonconvex problems, we design a special deterministic normalized gradient descent algorithm that achieves the optimal iteration complexity $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-2})$, and also prove that the popular SPIDER variance reduction algorithm achieves the optimal sample complexity $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-3})$ in the stochastic setting. Depression is a widespread mental health issue, affecting an estimated 3.8% of the global population. It is also one of the main contributors to disability worldwide. Recently it is becoming popular for individuals to use social media platforms (e.g., Reddit) to express their difficulties and health issues (e.g., depression) and seek support from other users in online communities. It opens great opportunities to automatically identify social media users with depression by parsing millions of posts for potential interventions. Deep learning methods have begun to dominate in the field of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) because of their ease of use, efficient processing, and state-of-the-art results on many NLP tasks. In this work, we propose a hybrid deep learning model which combines a pretrained sentence BERT (SBERT) and convolutional neural network (CNN) to detect individuals with depression with their Reddit posts. The sentence BERT is used to learn the meaningful representation of semantic information in each post. CNN enables the further transformation of those embeddings and the temporal identification of behavioral patterns of users. We trained and evaluated the model performance to identify Reddit users with depression by utilizing the Self-reported Mental Health Diagnoses (SMHD) data. The hybrid deep learning model achieved an accuracy of 0.86 and an F1 score of 0.86 and outperformed the state-of-the-art documented result (F1 score of 0.79) by other machine learning models in the literature. The results show the feasibility of the hybrid model to identify individuals with depression. Although the hybrid model is validated to detect depression with Reddit posts, it can be easily tuned and applied to other text classification tasks and different clinical applications.

Accurate automated analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) would largely help clinicians effectively monitor and diagnose patients with various brain diseases. Compared to supervised learning with labelled disease EEG data which can train a model to analyze specific diseases but would fail to monitor previously unseen statuses, anomaly detection based on only normal EEGs can detect any potential anomaly in new EEGs. Different from existing anomaly detection strategies which do not consider any property of unavailable abnormal data during model development, a task-oriented self-supervised learning approach is proposed here which makes use of available normal EEGs and expert knowledge about abnormal EEGs to train a more effective feature extractor for the subsequent development of anomaly detector. In addition, a specific two branch convolutional neural network with larger kernels is designed as the feature extractor such that it can more easily extract both larger scale and small-scale features which often appear in unavailable abnormal EEGs. The effectively designed and trained feature extractor has shown to be able to extract better feature representations from EEGs for development of anomaly detector based on normal data and future anomaly detection for new EEGs, as demonstrated on three EEG datasets. Voice conversion models have developed for decades, and current mainstream research focuses on non-streaming voice conversion. However, streaming voice conversion is more suitable for practical application scenarios than non-streaming voice conversion. In this paper, we propose a streaming any-to-many voice conversion based on fully non-autoregressive model, which includes a streaming transformer based acoustic model and a streaming vocoder. Streaming transformer based acoustic model is composed of a pre-trained encoder from streaming end-to-end based automatic speech recognition model and a decoder modified on FastSpeech blocks. Streaming vocoder is designed for streaming task with pseudo quadrature mirror filter bank and causal convolution. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves significant performance both in latency and conversion quality and can be real-time on CPU and GPU.

Automatic pronunciation assessment is an important technology to help self-directed language learners. While pronunciation quality has multiple aspects including accuracy, fluency, completeness, and prosody, previous efforts typically only model one aspect (e.g., accuracy) at one granularity (e.g., at the phoneme-level). In this work, we explore modeling multi-aspect pronunciation assessment at multiple granularities. Specifically, we train a Goodness Of Pronunciation feature-based Transformer (GOPT) with multi-task learning. Conventional machine learning applications typically assume that data samples are independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.). However, practical scenarios often involve a data-generating process that produces highly dependent data samples, which are known to heavily bias the stochastic optimization process and slow down the convergence of learning. In this paper, we conduct a fundamental study on how different stochastic data sampling schemes affect the sample complexity of online stochastic gradient descent (SGD) over highly dependent data. Specifically, with a $\phi$-mixing model of data dependence, we show that online SGD with proper periodic data-subsampling achieves an improved sample complexity over the standard online SGD in the full spectrum of the data dependence level. Interestingly, even subsampling a subset of data samples can accelerate the convergence of online SGD over highly dependent data. Moreover, we show that online SGD with mini-batch sampling can further substantially improve the sample complexity over online SGD with periodic data-subsampling over highly dependent data. Numerical experiments validate our theoretical results.

Many important machine learning applications involve regularized nonconvex bi-level optimization. However, the existing gradient-based bi-level optimization algorithms cannot handle nonconvex or nonsmooth regularizers, and they suffer from a high computation complexity in nonconvex bi-level optimization. In this work, we study a proximal gradient-type algorithm that adopts the approximate implicit differentiation (AID) scheme for nonconvex bi-level optimization with possibly nonconvex and nonsmooth regularizers. In particular, the algorithm applies the Nesterov's momentum to accelerate the computation of the implicit gradient involved in AID. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the global convergence properties of this algorithm through identifying its intrinsic potential function. In particular, we formally establish the convergence of the model parameters to a critical point of the bi-level problem, and obtain an improved computation complexity $\mathcal{O}(\kappa^{3.5}\epsilon^{-2})$ over the state-of-the-art result. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic convergence rates of this algorithm under a class of local nonconvex geometries characterized by a {\L}ojasiewicz-type gradient inequality. The voice conversion task is to modify the speaker identity of continuous speech while preserving the linguistic content. Generally, the naturalness and similarity are two main metrics for evaluating the conversion quality, which has been improved significantly in recent years. This paper presents the HCCL-DKU entry for the fake audio generation task of the 2022 ICASSP ADD challenge. We propose a novel ppg-based voice conversion model that adopts a fully end-to-end structure. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other conversion models, including Tacotron-based and Fastspeech-based models, on conversion quality and spoofing performance against anti-spoofing systems. In addition, we investigate several post-processing methods for better spoofing power. Finally, we achieve second place with a deception success rate of 0.916 in the ADD challenge.

Alternating gradient-descent-ascent (AltGDA) is an optimization algorithm that has been widely used for model training in various machine learning applications, which aims to solve a nonconvex minimax optimization problem. However, the existing studies show that it suffers from a high computation complexity in nonconvex minimax optimization. In this paper, we develop a single-loop and fast AltGDA-type algorithm that leverages proximal gradient updates and momentum acceleration to solve regularized nonconvex minimax optimization problems. By leveraging the momentum acceleration technique, we prove that the algorithm converges to a critical point in nonconvex minimax optimization and achieves a computation complexity in the order of $\mathcal{O}(\kappa^{\frac{11}{6}}\epsilon^{-2})$, where $\epsilon$ is the desired level of accuracy and $\kappa$ is the problem's condition number. {Such a computation complexity improves the state-of-the-art complexities of single-loop GDA and AltGDA algorithms (see the summary of comparison in \Cref{table1})}. Gradient descent-ascent (GDA) is a widely used algorithm for minimax optimization. However, GDA has been proved to converge to stationary points for nonconvex minimax optimization, which are suboptimal compared with local minimax points. In this work, we develop cubic regularization (CR) type algorithms that globally converge to local minimax points in nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization. We first show that local minimax points are equivalent to second-order stationary points of a certain envelope function. Then, inspired by the classic cubic regularization algorithm, we propose an algorithm named Cubic-LocalMinimax for finding local minimax points, and provide a comprehensive convergence analysis by leveraging its intrinsic potential function. Specifically, we establish the global convergence of Cubic-LocalMinimax to a local minimax point at a sublinear convergence rate and characterize its iteration complexity. Also, we propose a GDA-based solver for solving the cubic subproblem involved in Cubic-LocalMinimax up to certain pre-defined accuracy, and analyze the overall gradient and Hessian-vector product computation complexities of such an inexact Cubic-LocalMinimax algorithm. Moreover, we propose a stochastic variant of Cubic-LocalMinimax for large-scale minimax optimization, and characterize its sample complexity under stochastic sub-sampling. Actor-critic (AC) algorithms have been widely adopted in decentralized multi-agent systems to learn the optimal joint control policy. However, existing decentralized AC algorithms either do not preserve the privacy of agents or are not sample and communication-efficient. In this work, we develop two decentralized AC and natural AC (NAC) algorithms that are private, and sample and communication-efficient. In both algorithms, agents share noisy information to preserve privacy and adopt mini-batch updates to improve sample and communication efficiency. Particularly for decentralized NAC, we develop a decentralized Markovian SGD algorithm with an adaptive mini-batch size to efficiently compute the natural policy gradient. Under Markovian sampling and linear function approximation, we prove the proposed decentralized AC and NAC algorithms achieve the state-of-the-art sample complexities $\mathcal{O}\big(\epsilon^{-2}\ln(\epsilon^{-1})\big)$ and $\mathcal{O}\big(\epsilon^{-3}\ln(\epsilon^{-1})\big)$, respectively, and the same small communication complexity $\mathcal{O}\big(\epsilon^{-1}\ln(\epsilon^{-1})\big)$. Greedy-GQ is a value-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm for optimal control. Recently, the finite-time analysis of Greedy-GQ has been developed under linear function approximation and Markovian sampling, and the algorithm is shown to achieve an $\epsilon$-stationary point with a sample complexity in the order of $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-3})$. Such a high sample complexity is due to the large variance induced by the Markovian samples. In this paper, we propose a variance-reduced Greedy-GQ (VR-Greedy-GQ) algorithm for off-policy optimal control. In particular, the algorithm applies the SVRG-based variance reduction scheme to reduce the stochastic variance of the two time-scale updates. We study the finite-time convergence of VR-Greedy-GQ under linear function approximation and Markovian sampling and show that the algorithm achieves a much smaller bias and variance error than the original Greedy-GQ. In particular, we prove that VR-Greedy-GQ achieves an improved sample complexity that is in the order of $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-2})$. The finite-time convergence of off-policy TD learning has been comprehensively studied recently. However, such a type of convergence has not been well established for off-policy TD learning in the multi-agent setting, which covers broader applications and is fundamentally more challenging. This work develops two decentralized TD with correction (TDC) algorithms for multi-agent off-policy TD learning under Markovian sampling. In particular, our algorithms preserve full privacy of the actions, policies and rewards of the agents, and adopt mini-batch sampling to reduce the sampling variance and communication frequency. Under Markovian sampling and linear function approximation, we proved that the finite-time sample complexity of both algorithms for achieving an $\epsilon$-accurate solution is in the order of $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-1}\ln \epsilon^{-1})$, matching the near-optimal sample complexity of centralized TD(0) and TDC. Importantly, the communication complexity of our algorithms is in the order of $\mathcal{O}(\ln \epsilon^{-1})$, which is significantly lower than the communication complexity $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-1}\ln \epsilon^{-1})$ of the existing decentralized TD(0). The gradient descent-ascent (GDA) algorithm has been widely applied to solve minimax optimization problems. In order to achieve convergent policy parameters for minimax optimization, it is important that GDA generates convergent variable sequences rather than convergent sequences of function values or gradient norms. However, the variable convergence of GDA has been proved only under convexity geometries, and there lacks understanding for general nonconvex minimax optimization. This paper fills such a gap by studying the convergence of a more general proximal-GDA for regularized nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization. Specifically, we show that proximal-GDA admits a novel Lyapunov function, which monotonically decreases in the minimax optimization process and drives the variable sequence to a critical point. By leveraging this Lyapunov function and the K{\L} geometry that parameterizes the local geometries of general nonconvex functions, we formally establish the variable convergence of proximal-GDA to a critical point $x^*$, i.e., $x_t\to x^*, y_t\to y^*(x^*)$. Furthermore, over the full spectrum of the K{\L}-parameterized geometry, we show that proximal-GDA achieves different types of convergence rates ranging from sublinear convergence up to finite-step convergence, depending on the geometry associated with the K{\L} parameter. The personnel rostering problem is the problem of finding an optimal way to assign employees to shifts, subject to a set of hard constraints which all valid solutions must follow, and a set of soft constraints which define the relative quality of valid solutions. The problem has received significant attention in the literature and is addressed by a large number of exact and metaheuristic methods. In order to make the complex and costly design of heuristics for the personnel rostering problem automatic, we propose a new method combined Deep Neural Network and Tree Search. By treating schedules as matrices, the neural network can predict the distance between the current solution and the optimal solution. It can select solution strategies by analyzing existing (near-)optimal solutions to personnel rostering problem instances. Combined with branch and bound, the network can give every node a probability which indicates the distance between it and the optimal one, so that a well-informed choice can be made on which branch to choose next and to prune the search tree., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

We develop FedCluster--a novel federated learning framework with improved optimization efficiency, and investigate its theoretical convergence properties. The FedCluster groups the devices into multiple clusters that perform federated learning cyclically in each learning round. Therefore, each learning round of FedCluster consists of multiple cycles of meta-update that boost the overall convergence. In nonconvex optimization, we show that FedCluster with the devices implementing the local {stochastic gradient descent (SGD)} algorithm achieves a faster convergence rate than the conventional {federated averaging (FedAvg)} algorithm in the presence of device-level data heterogeneity. We conduct experiments on deep learning applications and demonstrate that FedCluster converges significantly faster than the conventional federated learning under diverse levels of device-level data heterogeneity for a variety of local optimizers., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Composition optimization is widely-applied in nonconvex machine learning. Various advanced stochastic algorithms that adopt momentum and variance reduction techniques have been developed for composition optimization. However, these algorithms do not fully exploit both techniques to accelerate the convergence and are lack of convergence guarantee in nonconvex optimization. This paper complements the existing literature by developing various momentum schemes with SPIDER-based variance reduction for non-convex composition optimization. In particular, our momentum design requires less number of proximal mapping evaluations per-iteration than that required by the existing Katyusha momentum. Furthermore, our algorithm achieves near-optimal sample complexity results in both non-convex finite-sum and online composition optimization and achieves a linear convergence rate under the gradient dominant condition.
