Abstract

We investigate the construction and usage of mimetic operators in curvilinear staggered grids. Specifically, we extend the Corbino-Castillo operators so they can be utilized to solve problems in non-trivial geometries. We prove that the resulting curvilinear operators satisfy the discrete analog of the extended Gauss-Divergence theorem. In addition, we demonstrate energy and mass conservation in curvilinear coordinates for the acoustic wave equation. These findings are illustrated in two-dimensional and three-dimensional elliptic/hyperbolic equations and can be extended to other partial differential equations as well.

Abstract

We research into the clinical, biochemical and neuroimaging factors associated with the outcome of stroke patients to generate a predictive model using machine learning techniques for prediction of mortality and morbidity 3 months after admission. The dataset consisted of patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) admitted to Stroke Unit of a European Tertiary Hospital prospectively registered. We identified the main variables for machine learning Random Forest (RF), generating a predictive model that can estimate patient mortality/morbidity. In conclusion, machine learning algorithms RF can be effectively used in stroke patients for long-term outcome prediction of mortality and morbidity., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

3. High Order Mimetic Symplectic Methods For Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract

Hamiltonian systems are known to conserve the Hamiltonian function, which describes the energy evolution over time. Obtaining a numerical spatio-temporal scheme that accurately preserves the discretized Hamiltonian function is often a challenge. In this paper, the use of high order mimetic spatial schemes is investigated for the numerical solution of Hamiltonian equations. The mimetic operators are based on developing high order discrete analogs of the vector calculus quantities divergence and gradient. The resulting high order operators preserve the properties of their continuum ones, and are therefore said to mimic properties of conservation laws and symmetries. Symplectic fourth order schemes are implemented in this paper for the time integration of Hamiltonian systems. A theoretical framework for the energy preserving nature of the resulting schemes is also presented, followed by numerical examples.

De los diversos aspectos de la preservación digital, este artículo se centra en uno: el almacenamiento distribuido (creación de réplicas) como garantía de que al menos no se pierda, corrompa o sea inaccesible una única copia de los documentos. Miraremos cómo replican sus datos Internet Archive y Google, y evaluamos algunas de las herramientas de sofware que hemos encontrado, tanto las específicamente bibliotecarias (en especial LOCKSS), las propietarias orientadas al archivado empresarial, y algunas de las opciones de software libre. El artículo se detiene sobretodo en LOCKSS, ya que se ha creado un nombre como la solución estandarizada para preservación digital en el mundo bibliotecario, pero que a nosotros nos decepcionó por su poca claridad en sus objetivos e implementación, y sus requerimientos excesivos. Dado que de estas herramientas evaluadas, ninguna sirve para preservar (replicando) nuestros fondos, aportamos nuestra solución interina y líneas futuras de investigación.Of the various aspects of digital preservation, this article focuses on one; distributed storage (the creation of replicas) to ensure that there is back-up if documents are lost, corrupted, or inaccessible. We examine how Internet Archive and Google replicate their data and assess some of the software we have found – tools specifically for libraries such as LOCKSS, proprietary software for company archives, and some of the free software options. The article focuses primarily on LOCKSS, which has established itself as a standardized solution for digital preservation in the library environment. However, we were disappointed by the vagueness of its objectives and implementation, and by its excessive requirements. Since none of the tools evaluated can preserve our data by replicating them, we offer a temporary solution and suggest future lines for research.

L'article es deté sobretot en LOCKSS, que s'ha creat un nom com a solució estandarditzada per a preservació digital en el món bibliotecari, però que a nosaltres ens va decebre per la seva poca claredat en els objectius i implementació, i els seus requeriments excessius. The MWTP: Monterrey Weather, Traffic and Pollution Database contains a collection of historic weather conditions, and recent traffic and air pollution data of the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico. Collected data includes: temperature, humidity, raining conditions, wind speed, travel distance, travel time, PM2.5, PM10, O3, among many others. As of February 2017, the MWTP database contained more than 4 million records of weather data, more than 700 thousand records of traffic data and around 57 thousand of air pollution measurements. Abstract

The cloud forest (CF), a hugely biodiverse ecosystem, is a hotspot of unexplored plants with potential for discovering pharmacologically active compounds. Without sufficient ethnopharmacological information, developing strategies for rationally selecting plants for experimental studies is crucial. With this goal, a CF metabolites library was created, and a ligand-based virtual screening was conducted to identify molecules with potential hypoglycemic activity. From the most promising botanical families, plants were collected, methanolic extracts were prepared, and hypoglycemic activity was evaluated through in vitro enzyme inhibition assays on α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). Metabolomic analyses were performed to identify the dominant metabolites in the species with the best inhibitory activity profile, and their affinity for the molecular targets was evaluated using ensemble molecular docking. This strategy led to the identification of twelve plants (in four botanical families) with hypoglycemic activity. Sida rhombifolia (Malvaceae) stood out for its DPP-IV selective inhibition versus S. glabra. A comparison of chemical profiles led to the annotation of twenty-seven metabolites over-accumulated in S. rhombifolia compared to S. glabra, among which acanthoside D and cis-tiliroside were noteworthy for their potential selective inhibition due to their specific intermolecular interactions with relevant amino acids of DPP-IV. The workflow used in this study presents a novel targeting strategy for identifying novel bioactive natural sources, which can complement the conventional selection criteria used in Natural Product Chemistry.
