Abstract: We study the constraint on $f(R)$ gravity that can be obtained by photometric primary probes of the Euclid mission. Our focus is the dependence of the constraint on the theoretical modelling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum. In the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model, we consider four different predictions for the ratio between the power spectrum in $f(R)$ and that in $\Lambda$CDM: a fitting formula, the halo model reaction approach, ReACT and two emulators based on dark matter only $N$-body simulations, FORGE and e-Mantis. These predictions are added to the MontePython implementation to predict the angular power spectra for weak lensing (WL), photometric galaxy clustering and their cross-correlation. By running Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we compare constraints on parameters and investigate the bias of the recovered $f(R)$ parameter if the data are created by a different model. For the pessimistic setting of WL, one dimensional bias for the $f(R)$ parameter, $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$, is found to be $0.5 \sigma$ when FORGE is used to create the synthetic data with $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| =-5.301$ and fitted by e-Mantis. The impact of baryonic physics on WL is studied by using a baryonification emulator BCemu. For the optimistic setting, the $f(R)$ parameter and two main baryon parameters are well constrained despite the degeneracies among these parameters. However, the difference in the nonlinear dark matter prediction can be compensated by the adjustment of baryon parameters, and the one-dimensional marginalised constraint on $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|$ is biased. This bias can be avoided in the pessimistic setting at the expense of weaker constraints. For the pessimistic setting, using the $\Lambda$CDM synthetic data for WL, we obtain the prior-independent upper limit of $\log_{10}|f_{R0}|< -5.6$. Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. 3. Stage-IV Cosmic Shear with Modified Gravity and Model-independent Screening

Abstract: We forecast constraints on minimal model-independent parametrisations of several Modified Gravity theories using mock Stage-IV cosmic shear data. We include nonlinear effects and screening, which ensures recovery of General Relativity on small scales. We introduce a power spectrum emulator to accelerate our analysis and evaluate the robustness of the growth index parametrisation with respect to two cosmologies: $\Lambda$CDM and the normal branch of the DGP model. We forecast the uncertainties on the growth index $\gamma$ to be of the order $\sim 10\%$. We find that our halo-model based screening approach demonstrates excellent performance, meeting the precision requirements of Stage-IV surveys. However, neglecting the screening transition results in biased predictions for cosmological parameters. We find that the screening transition shows significant degeneracy with baryonic feedback, requiring a much better understanding of baryonic physics for its detection. 4. Dark Scattering: accelerated constraints from KiDS-1000 with $\tt{ReACT}$ and $\tt{CosmoPower}$

Abstract: We present constraints on the Dark Scattering model through cosmic shear measurements from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), using an accelerated pipeline with novel emulators produced with $\tt{CosmoPower}$. Our main emulator, for the Dark Scattering non-linear matter power spectrum, is trained on predictions from the halo model reaction framework, previously validated against simulations. Additionally, we include the effects of baryonic feedback from $\tt{HMcode2016}$, whose contribution is also emulated. We analyse the complete set of statistics of KiDS-1000, namely Band Powers, COSEBIs and Correlation Functions, for Dark Scattering in two distinct cases. In the first case, taking into account only KiDS cosmic shear data, we constrain the amplitude of the dark energy - dark matter interaction to be $\vert A_{\rm ds} \vert \lesssim 20$ $\rm b/GeV$ at 68% C.L. Furthermore, we add information from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from Planck, along with baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) from 6dFGS, SDSS and BOSS, approximating a combined weak lensing + CMB + BAO analysis. From this combination, we constrain $A_{\rm ds} = 10.6^{+4.5}_{-7.3}$ $\rm b/GeV$ at 68% C.L. We confirm that with this estimated value of $A_{\rm ds}$ the interacting model considered in this work offers a promising alternative to solve the $S_8$ tension., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, and 1 appendix. Abstract: We investigate the approximations needed to efficiently predict the large-scale clustering of matter and dark matter halos in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We examine the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model, a slowly evolving dark energy, an interacting dark energy model and massive neutrinos. For each, we test approximations for the perturbative kernel calculations, including the omission of screening terms and the use of perturbative kernels based on the Einstein-de Sitter universe; we explore different infrared-resummation schemes, tracer bias models and a linear treatment of massive neutrinos; we employ two models for redshift space distortions, the Taruya-Nishimishi-Saito prescription and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. This work further provides a preliminary validation of the codes being considered by Euclid for the spectroscopic clustering probe in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We calculate and compare the $\chi^2$ statistic to assess the different modelling choices. This is done by fitting the spectroscopic clustering predictions to measurements from numerical simulations and perturbation theory-based mock data. We compare the behaviour of this statistic in the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cases, as a function of the maximum scale included in the fit, to the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case. We find that the Einstein-de Sitter approximation without screening is surprisingly accurate for all cases when comparing to the halo clustering monopole and quadrupole obtained from simulations. Our results suggest that the inclusion of multiple redshift bins, higher-order multipoles, higher-order clustering statistics (such as the bispectrum) and photometric probes such as weak lensing, will be essential to extract information on massive neutrinos, modified gravity and dark energy., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, 3 appendices. Abstract: The current discrepancy between the CMB and weak lensing measurements of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, the so-called $S_8$ tension, has attracted a great deal of recent attention, as it may show a crack in the $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology. We review the evidence for this tension and describe potential solutions, focusing on extensions of the standard cosmological model, including interacting dark energy and modified gravity. We present a likelihood analysis of the BOSS DR12 data, probing these alternative models as well as $\Lambda$CDM. From this analysis, we show hints of non-standard cosmology compatible with those seen in weak lensing observations, demonstrating that interacting dark energy or modified gravity can explain them successfully. 15. Modified gravity and massive neutrinos: constraints from the full shape analysis of BOSS galaxies and forecasts for Stage IV surveys

Abstract: We constrain the growth index $\gamma$ by performing a full-shape analysis of the power spectrum multipoles measured from the BOSS DR12 data. We adopt a theoretical model based on the Effective Field theory of the Large Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) and focus on two different cosmologies: $\gamma$CDM and $\gamma \nu$CDM, where we also vary the total neutrino mass. We explore different choices for the priors on the primordial amplitude $A_s$ and spectral index $n_s$, finding that informative priors are necessary to alleviate degeneracies between the parameters and avoid strong projection effects in the posterior distributions. Our tightest constraints are obtained with 3$\sigma$ Planck priors on $A_s$ and $n_s$: we obtain $\gamma = 0.647 \pm 0.085$ for $\gamma$CDM and $\gamma = 0.612^{+0.075}_{-0.090}$, $M_\nu < 0.30$ for $\gamma \nu$CDM at 68\% c.l., in both cases $\sim 1\sigma$ consistent with the $\Lambda$CDM prediction $\gamma \simeq 0.55$. Additionally, we produce forecasts for a Stage-IV spectroscopic galaxy survey, focusing on a DESI-like sample. We fit synthetic data-vectors for three different galaxy samples generated at three different redshift bins, both individually and jointly. Focusing on the constraining power of the Large Scale Structure alone, we find that forthcoming data can give an improvement of up to $\sim 85\%$ in the measurement of $\gamma$ with respect to the BOSS dataset when no CMB priors are imposed. On the other hand, we find the neutrino mass constraints to be only marginally better than the current ones, with future data able to put an upper limit of $M_\nu < 0.27~{\rm eV}$. Abstract: Abstract Background SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is known to be associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, including pre-eclampsia (PE), prematurity, perinatal and maternal mortality. Data on the burden of SARS-CoV-2 infection among pregnant women and their offspring in Sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We aimed to estimate SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and determine PE biomarkers in Mozambican pregnant women with perinatal loss. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among women who had a fetal or an early neonatal death at the Maputo Central Hospital (MCH), Mozambique. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM were determined in maternal and umbilical cord blood and PE biomarkers (sFlt-1 and PIGF) in maternal blood. SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR was performed in placenta and fetal lung biopsies from participants found to be SARS-CoV-2 seropositive. Results A total of 100 COVID-19 unvaccinated women were included in the study from March 2021 to April 2022. Total SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were detected in 68 [68%; 95CI (58 – 76)] maternal and 55 [55%; 95CI (54 – 74)] cord blood samples. SARS-CoV-2 IgM was detected in 18 cord blood samples and a positive placental RT-PCR in three of these participants. The proportion of women with moderate to high sFlt-1/PIGF ratio was higher in SARS-CoV-2 seropositive women than in those seronegative (71.2% vs 28.8%, p = 0.339), although the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among Mozambican women with perinatal loss was high during the second pandemic year, and there was evidence of vertical transmission in stillbirths. Findings also suggest that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection may increase the risk of developing PE.

Abstract: Introdução: A mobilização e participação da comunidade é fundamental em programas de prevenção/controlo de doenças transmitidas por vetores. Em Portugal, mosquitos do género Aedes aegypti estão estabelecidos na Ilha da Madeira, tendo ocorrido em 2012 o primeiro surto de febre de dengue (DENV-1) nesta região, com 1084 casos confirmados laboratorialmente. Objetivos do estudo: Caracterizar opiniões e atitudes da população madeirense face à utilização de mosquitos geneticamente modificados (MGM) como estratégia de controlo vetorial. Materiais e métodos: Foi aplicado um questionário a adultos residentes nas freguesias com cota abaixo dos 200 metros do município do Funchal, Região Autónoma da Madeira (S.Martinho, Stª Maria Maior, Sé, S.Pedro, Stª Luzia, Imaculado Coração de Maria) em março-abril 2019. Selecionaram-se aleatoriamente as residências para aplicação do questionário; em cada residência foi selecionado aleatoriamente um indivíduo; utilizou-se uma amostragem estratificada por sexo. Os participantes indicaram o seu grau de concordância com afirmações existentes no questionário. Resultados: Participaram no estudo 1270 indivíduos, idade média 53,5 anos, 44,6% do género masculino, 52,4% com ≥ 12 anos de escolaridade. Concordância com as afirmações: “Se libertassem MGM na minha rua, sentiria receio” concordam (C) 58,8%, discordam (D) 16,8, indiferente (I) 8%; “O medo dos efeitos da utilização dos MGM faz com que prefira técnicas tradicionais” C 46,8%, D 20,5%, I 13,4%; “os MGM devem ser rejeitados por não serem naturais” C 33,7%, D 29,6%, I 11,9%; “Como a maioria dos casos de dengue não são graves devemos continuar a utilizar estratégias tradicionais” C 47,9%, D 30,5%, I 8,3%. As mulheres (p = 0,017) e os menos letrados (p < 0,001) mostram mais receio da utilização de MGM. A análise conjunta das 4 questões indica que 37% têm atitude anti-MGM, 17% são moderadamente contra MGM, 7% mostra atitude moderadamente favorável, 16% são totalmente a favor, 23% têm atitude indiferente/indefinida. 53/151 respondentes (35,1%) consideravam que após libertação de MGM a população pode sentir-se mais incomodada/picada. Conclusões: Mais de metade dos participantes no estudo encontra-se no espetro anti-MGM e 1/4 tem uma atitude indefinida quanto à utilização de MGM para controlo de vetores. Se no futuro se optar por esta estratégia de controlo de vetores na Madeira há que compreender os motivos geradores desta atitude de oposição e desenvolver ações educativas abrangentes. Respostas: “Os MGM não são compatíveis com uso de estratégias tradicionais” Desconheço (D) 15,2%, verdade (V) 16,5%, falso (F) 56,3%, possível (P) 6,6%; “Libertar MGM pode não ser suficiente para controlar o número de mosquitos e de doentes” D 5,3%, V 61,5%, F 3,3%, P 25,2%; “Utilizar MGM diminui o número de mosquitos e doentes apenas em situações/lugares específicos” D 13,9%, V 43%, F 11,3%, P 25,8%; “Com o tempo os MGM perdem eficácia” D 35,7%, V 15,2%, F 23,2%, P 17,2%; “Os custos de libertação de MGM são superiores aos das estratégias tradicionais” D 32%, V 43%, F 16%. Quem tem maior nível de escolaridade ouviu falar/leu sobre MGM (p < 0,001) e responde mais vezes adequadamente às questões colocadas (p < 0,005). Conclusões: A grande maioria da população da Madeira nunca ouviu falar/leu sobre MGM. Verifica-se elevado nível de desconhecimento do possível controlo de vetores com utilização de MGM e compatibilidade com as estratégias tradicionais. Torna-se essencial aumentar a informação da população para garantir os pressupostos de transparência, entendimento mútuo e envolvimento ativo da comunidade se no futuro se desejar utilizar esta abordagem de controlo de vetores no território. Abstract: BackgroundProper analysis and interpretation of health care data can significantly improve patient outcomes by enhancing services and revealing the impacts of new technologies and treatments. Understanding the substantial impact of temporal shifts in these data is crucial. For example, COVID-19 vaccination initially lowered the mean age of at-risk patients and later changed the characteristics of those who died. This highlights the importance of understanding these shifts for assessing factors that affect patient outcomes. ObjectiveThis study aims to propose detection, initial characterization, and semantic characterization (DIS), a new methodology for analyzing changes in health outcomes and variables over time while discovering contextual changes for outcomes in large volumes of data. MethodsThe DIS methodology involves 3 steps: detection, initial characterization, and semantic characterization. Detection uses metrics such as Jensen-Shannon divergence to identify significant data drifts. Initial characterization offers a global analysis of changes in data distribution and predictive feature significance over time. Semantic characterization uses natural language processing–inspired techniques to understand the local context of these changes, helping identify factors driving changes in patient outcomes. By integrating the outcomes from these 3 steps, our results can identify specific factors (eg, interventions and modifications in health care practices) that drive changes in patient outcomes. DIS was applied to the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry and the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care, version IV (MIMIC-IV) data sets. ResultsOur approach allowed us to (1) identify drifts effectively, especially using metrics such as the Jensen-Shannon divergence, and (2) uncover reasons for the decline in overall mortality in both the COVID-19 and MIMIC-IV data sets, as well as changes in the cooccurrence between different diseases and this particular outcome. Factors such as vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced iatrogenic events and cancer-related deaths in MIMIC-IV were highlighted. The methodology also pinpointed shifts in patient demographics and disease patterns, providing insights into the evolving health care landscape during the study period. ConclusionsWe developed a novel methodology combining machine learning and natural language processing techniques to detect, characterize, and understand temporal shifts in health care data. This understanding can enhance predictive algorithms, improve patient outcomes, and optimize health care resource allocation, ultimately improving the effectiveness of machine learning predictive algorithms applied to health care data. Our methodology can be applied to a variety of scenarios beyond those discussed in this paper.

We aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of a non-invasive spot-check hemoglobin (SpHb) meter, Masimo Rad-67® Pulse CO-Oximeter®, in the diagnosis of anemia in pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in Kilifi, Kenya.MethodsThis was a diagnostic accuracy study that retrospectively evaluated SpHb against a validated reference standard of laboratory assessed hemoglobin (Lab Hb) by a SYSMEX XN-330 automated hematology analyzer. The study was nested within a prospective pregnancy cohort study that recruited unselected pregnant women from antenatal care clinics in two public hospitals in Kilifi County, coastal Kenya. Records with both SpHb and Lab Hb were selected from pregnancy visits between May 2021 and December 2022. Linear regression and Bland-Altman analysis were performed to compare the two tests and diagnostic accuracy parameters obtained for the diagnosis of anemia.ResultsA total of 2,975 records (from 2,203 unique participants), with paired SpHb and Lab Hb were analyzed. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in ultraperipheral areas, as in this research exemplified by the Autonomous Region of Madeira (Madeira), which recently witnessed an intensification of migrant inflow, many originating from countries with a deep historical connection to the region.This research characterizes the entrepreneurial migrant community to discern factors that may contribute to formulating and enhancing political-social policies to foster entrepreneurship success, broadly relevant to generating wealth but of particular importance in facilitating migrants’ integration. 23. PD-L1 expression in squamous cervical carcinomas of Mozambican women living with or without HIV

Abstract: Abstract Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is overexpressed in squamous cervical cancer (SCC) and can be used for targeted immunotherapy. The highest mortality rates of SCC are reported in sub-Saharan Africa, where Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence is high. In Mozambique most SCC patients present at advanced stages. Thus, there is a need to introduce new treatment options. However, immunocompromised patients were frequently excluded in previous clinical trials. Our aim was to determine if PD-L1 expression in SCC is as prevalent among women living with HIV (WLWH) as among other patients. 575 SCC from Maputo Central Hospital were included. HIV status was available in 266 (46%) cases PD-L1 expression was scored through tumour proportion score (TPS) and combined positive score (CPS). PD-L1 was positive in 20.1% of the cases (n = 110), TPS (score ≥ 25%) and in 26.3% (n = 144), CPS (score ≥ 1). Stratifying according to the HIV status, WLWH were TPS positive in 16.7%, compared to 20.9%, p = 0.43, and concerning CPS 21.1% versus 28.7%, p = 0.19, respectively. PD-L1 status was not influenced by stage, Ki-67 or p16, CD8 expression influenced only CPS status. Our data indicates that the documented effect of PD-L1 therapy on SCC should be confirmed in randomized clinical trials in an HIV endemic milieu.

24. Molecular diagnosis and characterization of Anaplasma marginale and Ehrlichia ruminantium infecting beef cattle of Maputo Province, Mozambique

Abstract: Abstract Background Members of the Anaplasmataceae family, such as the Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species, cause economic losses and public health risks. However, the exact economic impact has not been comprehensively assessed in Mozambique due to limited data available on its basic epidemiology. Therefore, we investigated the molecular occurrence and identity of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia spp. infecting beef cattle in Maputo province, Mozambique. Methods A total of 200 whole blood samples were collected from apparently healthy beef cattle. Whole blood DNA was extracted and tested for presence of Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia ruminantium DNA through amplification of the 16S rRNA and map1 genes. Positive samples to Anaplasma spp. were subject to PCR assay targeting the A. marginale-msp5 gene. Amplicons obtained were purified, sequenced and subject to phylogenetic analyses. Results Anaplasma spp., A. marginale and E. ruminantium were detected in 153 (76.5%), 142 (71%) and 19 (9.5%) of all the samples analyzed, respectively. On this same sample group, 19 (9.5%) were co-infected with A. marginale and E. ruminantium. The 16S rRNA sequences of Anaplasma spp. obtained were phylogenetically related to A. marginale, A. centrale and A. platys. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. marginale-msp5 nucleotide sequences were grouped with sequences from Asia, Africa and Latin America, whereas E. ruminantium-map1 DNA nucleotide sequences were positioned in multiple clusters. Conclusion Cattle in Maputo Province are reservoirs for multiple Anaplasma species. A high positivity rate of infection by A. marginale was observed, as well as high genetic diversity of E. ruminantium. Furthermore, five new genotypes of E. ruminantium-map1 were identified.

25. Navigating complexity: looking at the potential contribution of a boundary organisation in Portugal to evidence-informed policy

Abstract: Abstract Governments deal increasingly with multidimensional problems involving high levels of complexity. These so-called wicked problems, such as climate change, demand coordinated and coherent government action, as well as multi-stakeholder approaches. Boundary Organisations (BO), working at the knowledge-interface of the science–policy–society nexus may contribute substantially to both ends. This paper considers the potential contribution of the recently created Competence Centre for Planning, Policy, and Foresight of the Public Administration (PlanAPP), a Portuguese BO at the centre of government, to evidence-informed policy. To this goal, we focus on two streams of literature, Policy Coordination and Coherence (PCC) and Knowledge Governance (KG). An analytical framework with two dimensions is proposed: the first dimension considers if and how PlanAPP engages in boundary work; the second dimension looks at the activities that PlanAPP implements and their potential for PCC and KG. Our results support the idea that PlanAPP is promoting work on the knowledge-interface for public policy, with the potential to become a main player in supporting governments to address policy issues, including wicked problems, whilst potentially triggering a shift to knowledge governance in Portugal’s public administration. Nevertheless, PlanAPP could further intensify boundary activities, especially by increasing civil society participation and producing shared outputs that all actors involved recognise as legitimate, increasing trust in policy and institutions. This study’s methodology may be replicated to improve understanding of BOs and their contribution to policymaking in other contexts.

26. Cosmology with the EFTofLSS and BOSS: dark energy constraints and a note on priors

Abstract: We analyse the BOSS DR12 galaxy power spectrum data jointly with BAO data for three models of dark energy. We use recent measurements using a windowless estimator, and an independent and fast pipeline based on EFTofLSS implemented via the FAST-PT algorithm to compute the redshift-space loop corrections. We accelerate our analysis by using the BACCO linear emulator instead of a Boltzmann solver. We perform two sets of analyses: one with $3\sigma$ Planck priors on $A_s$ and $n_s$, and another that is CMB-free, without such priors. Firstly, we study $\Lambda$CDM, reproducing previous results obtained with the same estimator. We find a low value of $A_s$ in the CMB-free case, in agreement with many previous full-shape analyses of the BOSS data. We then study $w$CDM, finding a lower value of the amplitude in the CMB-free run, coupled with a preference for phantom dark energy with $w=-1.17^{+0.12}_{-0.11}$, again in broad agreement with previous results. Finally, we investigate the dark scattering model, which we label $wA$CDM. In the CMB-free analysis, we find a large degeneracy between the interaction strength $A$ and the amplitude $A_s$, hampering measurements of those parameters. On the contrary, in our run with a CMB prior, we are able to constrain the dark energy parameters to be $w=-0.972^{+0.036}_{-0.029}$ and $A = 3.9^{+3.2}_{-3.7}$, which show a 1$\sigma$ hint of interacting dark energy. This is the first measurement of this parameter and demonstrates the ability of this model to alleviate the $\sigma_8$ tension. Our analysis can be used as a guide for any model with scale-independent growth. Finally, we study the dependence of the results on the priors of the nuisance parameters and find these priors to be informative, with their broadening creating shifts in the contours. Abstract: Interacting dark energy models have been suggested as alternatives to the standard cosmological model, $\Lambda$CDM. We focus on a phenomenologically interesting class of dark scattering models that is characterised by pure momentum exchange between dark energy and dark matter. This model extends the parameter space with respect to $\Lambda$CDM by two parameters, $w$ and $A$, which define the dark energy equation of state and the strength of the coupling between dark energy and dark matter, respectively. In order to test non-standard cosmologies with Stage-IV galaxy clustering surveys, it is crucial to model mildly nonlinear scales and perform precision vs accuracy tests. We use the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure, and we perform validation tests by means of an MCMC analysis using a large set of N-body simulations. We find that adding the bispectrum monopole to the power spectrum multipoles improves the constraints on the dark energy parameters by $\sim 30 \%$ for $k_{\mathrm{max}, B}^{l=0} = 0.11$ $h$ Mpc$^{-1}$ without introducing biases in the parameter estimation. We also find that the same improvement can be achieved with more moderate scale cuts and the use of bias relations, or with the addition of the bispectrum quadrupole. Abstract: A presente pesquisa pretende investigar o direito fundamental à igualdade de condições para o acesso e permanência no ensino superior, sob a perspectiva do direito fundamental à própria democracia. Sob os métodos de revisão de literatura, dedutivo e qualitativo, o objetivo principal do trabalho é analisar se o direito fundamental à igualdade de condições para o acesso e permanência no ensino superior pode contribuir e, em caso positivo, de que forma, para fortalecer a formação humanística dos alunos, que representa um dos pilares da missão das universidades públicas e particulares, e assegurar o próprio direito fundamental à democracia, que é mais do que uma “obrigação eleitoral” periódica, pois não se contemplam suas regras societais somente a cada dois/quatro anos. Mais do que o próprio diálogo – que é também o esforço que Paulo Freire, denota ao sentido de revolução (transformação radical em práxis) – uma vez que não é possível dialogar com antagônicos, por exemplo, os que se validam pela regra da exclusão absoluta, ou seja, não é possível tolerar (democraticamente) a intolerância negativa. Ao final, concluiu-se que o direito o direito fundamental à igualdade de condições para o acesso e permanência no ensino superior possui amplo fundamento constitucional e legal, com potencial para fortalecer a democracia defensiva, ligada à luta de defesa dos direitos mais básicos, bem como incrementar uma verdadeira democracia propositiva, promovendo resiliência em face de possíveis retrocessos presentes e futuros, sendo essencial ao exercício da própria democracia em si, enquanto direito humano e fundamental.

Both in-hospital and community pediatric deaths are investigated using MITS. For this, community-wide socio-demographic approaches (notification of community deaths by key informants, formative research involving several segments of the community, availability of free phone lines for notification of medical emergencies and deaths, etc.) are conducted alongside to foster community awareness, involvement and adherence as well as to compute mortality estimates and collect relevant information of health and mortality determinants. The main objective of this paper is to describe the Manhiça Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) site and the CHAMPS research environment in place including the local capacities among its reference hospital, laboratories, data center and other relevant areas involved in this ambitious surveillance and research project, whose ultimate aim is to improve child survival through public health actions derived from credible estimates and understanding of the major causes of childhood mortality in Mozambique.

Abstract: Background: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in patients with recurrent oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: Clinical studies on recurrent OSCC treated with PDT alone were included. Combined treatment strategies were excluded. The search was performed on Medline/Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov, manual search, and grey literature. Results: The eleven included studies were observational. The risk of bias and methodological quality were evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The studies reported the use of hematoporphyrin derivative, PhotofrinⓇ, FoscanⓇ and 5-aminolevulinic acid. Data on treatment response and survival was collected. Secondarily, postoperative courses and patient's quality of life/acceptance were reported whenever available. PhotofrinⓇ and FoscanⓇ were the most used photosensitisers, with more complete responses. Lesions responding less favourably were on posterior regions or deep-seated in the tissue. Conclusions: Although treatment response differs between treatment protocols, PDT stands as a viable treatment option to be considered, as it can achieve therapeutic results and disease-free, long-lasting periods. Partial treatment responses may be of interest when achieving eligibility for other treatment strategies. Despite this study's limitations, which considered four photosensitisers, PhotofrinⓇ was the most used but more recent photosensitisers like FoscanⓇ have greater chemical stability, tissue penetration, and may be more efficacious on recurrent OSCC.

Abstract: Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second cause of death worldwide. The increasing burden of stroke underscores the importance of optimising rehabilitation protocols. Virtual reality (VR) can improve poststroke prognosis. A VR software combining gamification, full immersion and stroke specificity (ie, the Development and validation of a novel viRtual rEality software for improving diSability and quality of lifE in patients with sTroke (RESET) software) might substantially improve disability and quality of life (QoL). However, this technology is still very scarce. The RESET trial aims to assess the effects of an early 10-week gamified, fully immersive and stroke-specific VR intervention (ie, starting at week 3 poststroke) on disability and QoL in people with stroke in the subacute phase. People with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke (n=94) aged ≥18 years will be randomised to receive (1) usual care (UC), (2) commercial VR or (3) gamified, fully immersive and stroke-specific VR (RESET). The three groups will receive UC (ie, three sessions/week of 90 min of standard rehabilitation). The VR groups will additionally receive three VR sessions of 20 min per week. The outcome measures will be assessed at baseline (week 2 from stroke occurrence), week 13 (approximately 90 days from the event) and week 26 (approximately 6 months from the event). The primary outcome is disability measured with the Barthel Index. Secondary outcomes include QoL, upper-extremity and lower-extremity motor function, gross manual dexterity, handgrip strength and cognitive function. This study will unravel the effects of a gamified, fully immersive and stroke-specific VR software on disability and QoL in patients with stroke in the early subacute phase.NCT06132399.

Abstract: Demand response (DR) and Energy Communities are highlighted as two key means to facilitate the energy transition in Europe by providing flexibility to the grid in a decentralized way. This paper uses a theoretical framework, the balanced readiness level assessment, to review five social and techno-economic dimensions regarding the status of demand response technology, emphasizing key challenges and opportunities. Focusing specifically on Energy Communities in Spain, issues such as the split-incentive problem in technology investments, market rules favouring large generators, and the imperative for improved coordination in the electricity market and network operations are identified as significant hurdles to further DR development. A balanced readiness level score of 7.25 is assessed for Spanish energy communities, composed of a 9 for the technological, a 7 for the regulatory and the acceptance, and a 5 for explicit and 7 for implicit market readiness level.The application of the balanced readiness level assessment methodology is novel to the energy industry and does not only prove the value it can create in this sector, but also provides insights for policymakers and stakeholders navigating the dynamic landscape of Demand Response for Spanish Energy Communities.

Abstract: Mucocele is a common benign pathology of the minor salivary glands, caused by trauma that leads to rupture or obstruction of the glandular ducts. It is commonly found in children due to oral habits, such as biting and sucking on lips and cheeks. The main treatment consists of complete surgical excision of the lesion and associated gland, which can be traumatic and invasive for children. Therefore, conversational and short-term techniques have been developed to reduce patient discomfort. The objective of this study was to present a simplified technique for treating mucocele in infants, called Ligature, in order to reflect on the choice of the operative technique that allows for better trans and postoperative conditions. A four month-old male infant was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine and Children's Dentistry at the State University of Londrina for diagnosis and treatment of a nodular lesion on the inner mucosa of the lower lip. According to the clinical characteristics, a diagnosis of mucocele was reached, with the Ligature Technique as the treatment of choice. Local disinfection was performed followed by topical anesthesia and the base of the lesion was tied with suture. Monitoring until complete remission was carried out via telemonitoring between appointments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ligature Technique is an excellent treatment option for pedicled mucoceles considering the importance of appropriate selection of dental techniques, in order to achieve the treatment goal in a less traumatic manner, and meet the specific needs of each patient.

Abstract: Introduction Determining aetiology of severe illness can be difficult, especially in settings with limited diagnostic resources, yet critical for providing life-saving care. Our objective was to describe the accuracy of antemortem clinical diagnoses in young children in high-mortality settings, compared with results of specific postmortem diagnoses obtained from Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS).Methods We analysed data collected during 2016–2022 from seven sites in Africa and South Asia. We compared antemortem clinical diagnoses from clinical records to a reference standard of postmortem diagnoses determined by expert panels at each site who reviewed the results of histopathological and microbiological testing of tissue, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. We calculated test characteristics and 95% CIs of antemortem clinical diagnostic accuracy for the 10 most common causes of death. We classified diagnostic discrepancies as major and minor, per Goldman criteria later modified by Battle.Results CHAMPS enrolled 1454 deceased young children aged 1–59 months during the study period; 881 had available clinical records and were analysed. The median age at death was 11 months (IQR 4–21 months) and 47.3% (n=417) were female. We identified a clinicopathological discrepancy in 39.5% (n=348) of deaths; 82.3% of diagnostic errors were major. The sensitivity of clinician antemortem diagnosis ranged from 26% (95% CI 14.6% to 40.3%) for non-infectious respiratory diseases (eg, aspiration pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, etc) to 82.2% (95% CI 72.7% to 89.5%) for diarrhoeal diseases. Antemortem clinical diagnostic specificity ranged from 75.2% (95% CI 72.1% to 78.2%) for diarrhoeal diseases to 99.0% (95% CI 98.1% to 99.6%) for HIV.Conclusions Antemortem clinical diagnostic errors were common for young children who died in areas with high childhood mortality rates. To further reduce childhood mortality in resource-limited settings, there is an urgent need to improve antemortem diagnostic capability through advances in the availability of diagnostic testing and clinical skills.

Abstract: The increasing prevalence of dementia demands innovative solutions; however, existing technological products often lack tailored support for individuals living with this condition. The Living Lab approach, as a collaborative innovation method, holds promise in addressing this issue by actively involving end-users in the design and development of solutions adapted to their needs. Despite this potential, the approach still faces challenges due to its lack of recognition as a research methodology and its absence of tailored guidelines, particularly in dementia care, prompting inquiries into its effectiveness. This narrative review aims to fill this gap by identifying and analysing digital health Living Labs focusing on dementia solutions. Additionally, it proposes guidelines for enhancing their operations, ensuring sustainability, scalability, and greater impact on dementia care. Fifteen Living Labs were identified and analyzed. Based on trends, best practices, and literature, the guidelines emphasize user engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, technological infrastructure, regulatory compliance, transparent innovation processes, impact measurement, sustainability, scalability, dissemination, and financial management. Implementing these guidelines can enhance the effectiveness and long-term impact of Living Labs in dementia care, fostering new collaborations globally.

Abstract: Abstract Background Several strategies for identifying biologically implausible values in longitudinal anthropometric data have recently been proposed, but the suitability of these strategies for large population datasets needs to be better understood. This study evaluated the impact of removing population outliers and the additional value of identifying and removing longitudinal outliers on the trajectories of length/height and weight and on the prevalence of child growth indicators in a large longitudinal dataset of child growth data. Methods Length/height and weight measurements of children aged 0 to 59 months from the Brazilian Food and Nutrition Surveillance System were analyzed. Population outliers were identified using z-scores from the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts. After identifying and removing population outliers, residuals from linear mixed-effects models were used to flag longitudinal outliers. The following cutoffs for residuals were tested to flag those: -3/+3, -4/+4, -5/+5, -6/+6. The selected child growth indicators included length/height-for-age z-scores and weight-for-age z-scores, classified according to the WHO charts. Results The dataset included 50,154,738 records from 10,775,496 children. Boys and girls had 5.74% and 5.31% of length/height and 5.19% and 4.74% of weight values flagged as population outliers, respectively. After removing those, the percentage of longitudinal outliers varied from 0.02% (+6) to 1.47% (+3) for length/height and from 0.07 to 1.44% for weight in boys. In girls, the percentage of longitudinal outliers varied from 0.01 to 1.50% for length/height and from 0.08 to 1.45% for weight. The initial removal of population outliers played the most substantial role in the growth trajectories as it was the first step in the cleaning process, while the additional removal of longitudinal outliers had lower influence on those, regardless of the cutoff adopted. The prevalence of the selected indicators were also affected by both population and longitudinal (to a lesser extent) outliers. Conclusions Although both population and longitudinal outliers can detect biologically implausible values in child growth data, removing population outliers seemed more relevant in this large administrative dataset, especially in calculating summary statistics. However, both types of outliers need to be identified and removed for the proper evaluation of trajectories.

Abstract: We review the topic of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which has been the subject of considerable interest over the past two years. Our review begins with a general introduction to Lovelock's theorem, and the subject of Gauss-Bonnet terms in the action for gravity. These areas are of fundamental importance for understanding modified theories of gravity, and inform our subsequent discussion of recent attempts to include the effects of a Gauss-Bonnet term in four space-time dimensions by re-scaling the appropriate coupling parameter. We discuss the mathematical complexities involved in implementing this idea, and review recent attempts at constructing well-defined, self-consistent theories that enact it. We then move on to consider the gravitational physics that results from these theories, in the context of black holes, cosmology, and weak-field gravity. Abstract: The emergence of pathological manifestations on facades persists globally, with recurring failures occurring often due to repeated construction details or design decisions. This study selected a building with a recurring architectural design and evaluated the stain pattern on its facade using a UAV with an infrared thermal camera. The results showed that advanced technology offers a non-invasive and efficient approach for comprehensive inspections, enabling early detection and targeted interventions to preserve architectural assets without requiring ancillary infrastructure or risking workers at height. The precise identification of damage clarified the real causes of the observed pathological manifestations. Capturing the images allowed accurate inspection, revealing hollow and damp spots not visible to the human eye. Novel results highlight patterns in the appearance of dirt on facades, related to water flow that could have been redirected through proper geometric element execution. The presented inspection methodology, staining standards, and construction details can be easily applied to any building, regardless of location. Sills, drip pans, and flashings must have drip cuts, adequate inclination, and projections to prevent building degradation.

42. Teacher Training for 'Augmented Reading': The Living Book Approach and Initial Results

Abstract: Living Book--Augmenting Reading for Life, a three-year EU-funded Erasmus + project (September 2016-August 2019), exploited the affordances of augmented reality (AR) and other emerging technologies in order to address the underachievement of European youth in reading skills. The program developed an innovative approach that empowers teachers from upper primary and lower secondary schools (ages 9-15) to 'augment' students' reading experiences through combining offline activities promoting reading literacy with online experiences of books' 'virtual augmentation' and with social dynamics. Various professional learning activities were designed within the project, aimed at strengthening European teachers' profile and competences in effectively integrating the Living Book approach into their classroom activities, and in dealing with diversified groups of learners, particularly pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Teachers also received training in how to involve parents, and particularly those from disadvantaged and/or migrant backgrounds, in proreading activities to back the overall Living Book strategy at home. The current article provides an overview of the main phases of the Living Book project implementation, and of the program's key activities and outputs. It also outlines the content and structure of the 'Augmented Teacher' and 'Augmented Parent-Trainer' training courses developed within the project. Finally, it reports on the main insights gained from the pilot testing of the courses and the follow-up classroom experimentation that took place in the project partner countries.

43. On the road to percent accuracy VI: the nonlinear power spectrum for interacting dark energy with baryonic feedback and massive neutrinos

Abstract: Understanding nonlinear structure formation is crucial for fully exploring the data generated by stage IV surveys, requiring accurate modelling of the power spectrum. This is challenging for deviations from $\Lambda$CDM, but we must ensure that alternatives are well tested, to avoid false detections. We present an extension of the halo model reaction framework for interacting dark energy. We modify the halo model including the additional force present in the Dark Scattering model and implement it into ReACT. The reaction is combined with a pseudo spectrum from EuclidEmulator2 and compared to N-body simulations. Using standard mass function and concentration-mass relation, we find predictions to be 1 % accurate at $z=0$ up to $k=0.8~h/{\rm Mpc}$ for the largest interaction strength tested ($\xi=50$ b/GeV), improving to $2~h/{\rm Mpc}$ at $z=1$. For smaller interaction strength ($10$ b/GeV), we find 1 % agreement at $z=1$ up to scales above $3.5~h/{\rm Mpc}$, being close to $1~h/{\rm Mpc}$ at $z=0$. Finally, we improve our predictions with the inclusion of baryonic feedback and massive neutrinos and study degeneracies between the effects of these contributions and those of the interaction. Limiting the scales to where our modelling is 1 % accurate, we find a degeneracy between the interaction and feedback, but not with massive neutrinos. We expect the degeneracy with feedback to be resolvable by including smaller scales. 44. A nutritional strategy to promote gilthead seabream performance under low temperatures

Abstract: Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) is vulnerable to low water temperature, which may occur in the Southern Europe and Mediterranean region during Winter. Fish are poikilothermic animals, so feed intake, digestion, metabolism and ultimately growth are affected by water temperature. This study aimed to evaluate growth performance, feed utilisation, nutrient apparent digestibility, and N losses to the environment in seabream juveniles reared under low temperature (13 degrees Celsius). Three isolipid and isoenergetic diets were formulated: a commercial-like diet (COM) with 44% crude protein and 27.5% fishmeal; and 2 diets with 42% CP (ECO and ECOSup), reduced FM inclusion, and 15% poultry meal. ECOSup diet was supplemented with a mix of feed additives intended to promote fish growth and feed intake. The ECO diets presented lower production costs than the COM diet and included more sustainable ingredients. Seabream juveniles (154.5 g) were randomly assigned to triplicate tanks and fed the diets for 84 days. Fish fed the ECOSup and COM diets attained a similar final body weight. ECOSup fed fish presented significantly higher HSI than COM fed fish, probably due to higher hepatic glycogen reserves. The VSI of ECOSup fed fish were significantly lower compared to COM fed fish, which is a positive achievement from a consumer point of view. Nutrient digestibility was similar in ECOSup and COM diets. Feeding fish with the ECO diets resulted in lower faecal N losses when compared to COM fed fish. Feeding seabream with an eco-friendly diet with a mix of feed additives promoted growth, improved fish nutritional status and minimised N losses to the environment whilst lowering production costs. Nutritional strategies that ultimately promote feed intake and diet utilisation are valuable tools that may help conditioning fish to sustain growth even under adverse conditions.

45. Non-Gaussianity in inflationary scenarios for primordial black holes

Abstract: Working in an idealised framework in which a series of phases of evolution defined by the second slow-roll parameter $\eta$ are matched together, we calculate the reduced bispectrum, $f_{\rm NL}$, for models of inflation with a large peak in their primordial power spectra. We find $f_{\rm NL}$ is typically approximately constant over scales at which the peak is located, and provide an analytic approximation for this value. This allows us to identify the conditions under which $f_{\rm NL}$ is large enough to have a significant impact on the resulting production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs). Abstract: Introduction The burden of severe maternal morbidity is highest in sub-Saharan Africa, and its relative contribution to maternal (ill) health may increase as maternal mortality continues to fall. Women’s perspective of their long-term recovery following severe morbidity beyond the standard 42-day postpartum period remains largely unexplored.Methods This woman-centred, grounded theory study was nested within the Pregnancy Care Integrating Translational Science Everywhere (PRECISE) study in Kilifi, Kenya. Purposive and theoretical sampling was used to recruit 20 women who experienced either a maternal near-miss event (n=11), potentially life-threatening condition (n=6) or no severe morbidity (n=3). Women were purposively selected between 6 and 36 months post partum at the time of interview to compare recovery trajectories. Using a constant comparative approach of line-by-line open codes, focused codes, super-categories and themes, we developed testable hypotheses of women’s postpartum recovery trajectories after severe maternal morbidity.Results Grounded in women’s accounts of their lived experience, we identify three phases of recovery following severe maternal morbidity: ‘loss’, ‘transition’ and ‘adaptation to a new normal’. These themes are supported by multiple, overlapping super-categories: loss of understanding of own health, functioning and autonomy; transition in women’s identity and relationships; and adaptation to a new physical, psychosocial and economic state. This recovery process is multidimensional, potentially cyclical and extends far beyond the standard 42-day postpartum period.Conclusion Women’s complex needs following severe maternal morbidity require a reconceptualisation of postpartum recovery as extending far beyond the standard 42-day postpartum period. Women’s accounts expose major deficiencies in the provision of postpartum and mental healthcare. Improved postpartum care provision at the primary healthcare level, with reach extended through community health workers, is essential to identify and treat chronic mental or physical health problems following severe maternal morbidity.

Abstract: Parkinson's disease is the second most frequent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide and is characterized by the presence of predominantly motor symptoms, the loss of dopaminergic neurons, and degeneration of the striatum. In addition to the motor symptoms of Parkinson´s disease, there are other non-motor symptoms such as hyposmia, sleep disorders, personality changes, pain, depression, gait, speech, and swallowing difficulties. Although there has been much research in the field, there is still no specific treatment for the disease. Current studies for new treatments use a variety of models, and the most used animals are rodents, primates, and non-mammals. This review aims to present the non-transgenic models for Parkinson's disease, providing an overview of each model, their advantages and disadvantages, and at last, how they could be helpful in the search for new treatments.

Abstract: RESUMO Objetivo Verificar o repertório lexical de crianças falantes do português brasileiro aos 24 e 30 meses e a associação entre a quantidade de palavras faladas e as variáveis: nível socioeconômico, escolaridade dos pais, presença de irmãos no convívio familiar, frequentar ou não escola e uso exacerbado de tablets e celulares pelas crianças. Método 30 pais de crianças com 24 meses, residentes no estado de São Paulo participaram do estudo. Por meio de plataformas de videoconferência eles foram submetidos à anamnese fonoaudiológica, entrevista com o serviço social e preencheram o “Inventário MacArthur de Desenvolvimento Comunicativo - Primeiras Palavras e Gestos”, quando seus filhos tinham 24 e 30 meses. Foi aplicada estatística indutiva inferencial, quantitativa e qualitativa. Resultados A mediana das palavras emitidas foi de 283 aos 24 meses e 401 aos 30 meses, indicando aumento em torno de 118 palavras após seis meses. A criança estar frequentando ambiente escolar apresentou relação significativa com o aumento do vocabulário. Conclusão O estudo reforça o crescimento do vocabulário conforme o avanço da idade e corrobora o fato de as crianças com 24 meses já possuírem um repertório maior que 50 palavras. Aqueles que frequentam escola diariamente produzem pelo menos 70 palavras a mais dos que não frequentam.

49. Correlation between the region of interest in digital radiography, Hounsfield units, and histological maturation on Wistar rats submitted to tibial fracture

Abstract: Objective: Study the relationship between the region of interest (ROI) and Hounsfield units (HU) in the tibial bone callus. Methods: Twenty-one adult Wistar rats were submitted to tibial fracture. The fracture was radiographed after their euthanasia, and the bone calluses were analyzed histologically after being stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Euthanasia occurred between the 2nd and 6th weeks after fracture and fixation, thus obtaining various consolidation stages. Histologically, vessels, chondroblasts, connective tissue (collagen), maximum size of the chondrocyte, and the concentration of chondrocytes were quantified. Results: It was observed that the higher the HU, the more mature and closer to bone consolidation it is, proving that the use of ROI and bone callus measurement with HU is reliable for the histological process of maturation of the bone callus and can be safely used as proof of evolution of the bone healing process. Abstract: Introduction/Justification: Rectal cancer (RC) is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide. Recent studies indicate that systemic inflammation and nutritional status are associated with the prognosis of cancer patients. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been increasingly studied as a predictor of survival outcome. However, despite these advances, there are few studies evaluating the prognostic capacity of this index in patients with RC. Objectives: To analyze the impact of PNI on the survival of patients with non-metastatic RC undergoing oncological treatment. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective, cross-sectional and analytical study. It included patients diagnosed with stage I, II and III rectal carcinoma who had been treated surgically, with or without neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, and who were attended to at the Clinical Oncology outpatient clinic of the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of Campinas between January 2000 and December 2016. Patients were categorized into low and high PNI, according to the median of the sample. PNI was calculated using the formula: PNI = (10xserum albumin [g/dl]) + 0.005xlymphocytes/μL). Clinical variables, body composition and systemic inflammatory indices were also analyzed. Body composition was analyzed using computed tomography, and skeletal muscle compartments and subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue were assessed using SliceOmatic software (Tomovision, Canada). Statistical analyses were carried out using Stata software version 12.0 (Stata Corp LP®). This research was approved by the UNICAMP Research Ethics Committee (CAAE: 22438319.9.0000.5404). Results: The sample consisted of 298 patients, 118 of whom had low PNI. The group with low PNI had a lower muscle mass index (p = 0.025) and subcutaneous adipose tissue index (p = 0.044), and higher subcutaneous (p =0.049) and visceral (p = 0.012) adipose tissue radiodensity. Median disease-free survival was 24.5 months for patients with low PNI (HR 1.85; CI 1.30-2.62; p = 0.001). Patients with low PNI had a lower median disease-free survival (mDS) of 24.5 months compared to 107.4 months for the high PNI group [HR 1.85; IC 1.30-2.62; p = 0.001]. Median overall survival (mOS) was 75.3 months for the low NPI group and 140.4 months for the high NPI group (HR 1.67; CI 1.13-2.48; p = 0.011). Conclusion: The PNI performed at diagnosis is a prognostic tool for assessing the clinical outcome of patients with non-metastatic RC. Nutritional status and systemic inflammation are associated with survival in cancer patients. The PNI is a marker that combines both conditions and has been shown to be an important prognostic tool for desease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in RC. The PNI is a simple, practical tool that uses low-cost clinical evaluation parameters and can therefore be easily implemented in clinical practice.
