These Web Tables provide the most recent national statistics on the availability of these academically rigorous courses and programs, the percentage of graduates who earn high school credits in them, and the postsecondary outcomes of students who earned varying numbers of such credits. They use nationally representative survey and transcript data collected through the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

This First Look presents findings from the base-year survey of the newly launched High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), the first round of a study that will follow a ninth-grade cohort through high school and into their postsecondary years. HSLS:09 is the fifth in a series of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) high school longitudinal studies that began in 1972 and have been continued with each new decade. The purpose of this report is to introduce new data, marking the release of the HSLS:09 base-year dataset, through the presentation of select descriptive tables. The findings presented here represent only a small sample of the relationships between data elements in a study that gathered extensive information from school administrators, counselors, teachers, and parents, in addition to students who were both surveyed and given a mathematics assessment focused on algebraic reasoning. This report provides a first look at selected findings from the base year of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09). The HSLS:09 project focuses on understanding students' trajectories from the beginning of high school into higher education and the workforce. The core research questions for the study explore secondary to postsecondary transition plans and the evolution of those plans; the paths into and out of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields of study and careers; and the educational and social experiences that are related to these shifts in plans or paths. The Data File Documentation reports on the procedures and methodologies employed during the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 base year, first, and second follow-ups, with special emphasis on the second follow-up (2006). The document is designed to provide guidance for users of the restricted-use data as released in Electronic Codebook (ECB) format (NCES 2008-346) and also contains information that will be valuable to users of the public-use Data Analysis System (DAS). This report presents information on similarities and differences between U.S. high school sophomores as studied at three points in time over the past 22 years, with a focus on cohort demographics, academic programs and performance, extracurricular activities, life values, and educational/occupational aspirations. It provides an update to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report published in 1993, "America's High School Sophomores: A Ten Year Comparison" (Rasinski et al. 1993). This report uses data from the following NCES studies: (1) sophomores in 1980, as studied in High School and Beyond (HS&B); (2) sophomores in 1990, as studied in the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88); and (3) sophomores in 2002, as studied in the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002). The report is descriptive, serving to update published information on the HS&B and NELS:88 sophomore surveys with additional information from ELS:2002 for selected comparable questionnaire items. Secondary purposes are to note qualifications and limitations to the survey-based data comparisons and also to note related additional information from other data sources, such as the Current Population Survey (CPS), over the same period. With a few additions, the topics selected for the report are based on those selected for inclusion in the previous report comparing the 1980 and 1990 sophomores (Rasinski et al. 1993). The primary focus of this report is observation of change over the period for national averages and for subgroupings that have been of traditional interest to the NCES longitudinal studies. The data for this report describe the tested achievement and educational status of a cohort based on a nationally representative probability sample of 15,362 10th-graders in 752 public, Catholic, and other private schools, who were studied in the spring term of the 2001-02 school year. The base-year data collection for the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) is the first wave of a new longitudinal study of high school students that continues a series of nationally representative longitudinal studies conducted by the United States Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) over recent decades. Future survey waves will follow both students and high school dropouts and will monitor the transition of the cohort to postsecondary education, the labor force, and family formation. Although the base-year study comprised surveys of parents, teachers, school administrators, and library media specialists, as well as the cohort of high school sophomores, to remain concise, this report draws primarily on data from students, the primary unit of analysis for the study. Este estudio analiza críticamente diversas cuestiones controvertidas relativas a la caracterización e implementación de los programas AICLE (Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenido y Lengua Extranjera) desde la perspectiva de los principales interesados (docentes, estudiantes y padres). Concretamente se examinan sus opiniones acerca de lo que supone la educación AICLE, sus beneficios en términos de competencia lingüística y de una mayor exposición y uso de la lengua, si el conocimiento del contenido mejora gracias a tales programas, si se enfatiza más el contenido que la lengua en la evaluación, y, por último, si los docentes y estudiantes se sienten motivados y satisfechos con la experiencia AICLE. Partiendo de la triangulación metodológica este artículo sigue un diseño de método mixto para investigar las coincidencias y diferencias de perspectiva. Mientras todos los interesados coinciden en los supuestos beneficios de AICLE en términos de mejora de la competencia lingüística, sorprendentemente no todos piensan lo mismo acerca de la necesidad de una mayor exposición y uso de la lengua y de si el conocimiento del contenido mejora con AICLE. En general, se valora positivamente la educación AICLE, si tales programas están bien articulados y se implementan eficazmente en la práctica, aunque siempre hay margen para mejoras de calidad y formación del profesorado según los profesores., This study aims to critically discuss some of the most controversial issues affecting the characterisation and implementation practices of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) programmes from key stakeholders’ perspective (teachers, learners and parents). The focus will be placed on examining their voices on what CLIL education actually means, its alleged potential benefits in terms of enhanced L2 competence and increased L2 exposure and use, whether content knowledge is improved by CLIL instruction, whether content is emphasised over language in CLIL assessment and, lastly, whether teachers and learners feel motivated and satisfied with the CLIL experience. With this in mind, and based on methodological triangulation, this paper follows a mixed-method research design for investigating the commonalities and differences of perspective. While all stakeholders agree with the alleged benefits of CLIL in terms of enhanced language competence, surprisingly not all think the same about the need for more L2 exposure and use in bilingual classes and whether content knowledge is improved by CLIL instruction. On the whole, CLIL is positively evaluated by all stakeholders, provided these educational programmes are well articulated and effectively implemented in practice, although there is always room for further quality improvement and teacher training, according to teachers.

Objective: Communicative language teaching (CLT) is an approach that emphasizes an active interaction in the classroom, including the practice of productive skills like interactive speaking, a skill that is particularly important in EMI classes. In this paper, we evaluated the effect of a continuous evaluation system based on receiving points for speaking in the second language in class, which offered a more instrumental motivation, and its relationship to students’ perceived willingness to communicate (WTC) in affective, cognitive and behavioral components. Methodology. Once the points system was in place, it was used to encourage students to improve their fluency by participating in class in English, avoiding Spanish. When the course finished, a questionnaire examined their perceptions of the system and how it affected their English use in class. Results. Our results indicated a high percentage of students, 81%,who evaluated the system positively overall and who would want to continue it in the future, though lower levels of agreement were seen when looking at comfort and enjoyment. Finally, the qualitative results echo this data while offering more nuance on how the system affects students WTC. Conclusions: We conclude that the system was positive for students’ perceptions of their WTC, despite it being an instrumental motivation that looks toward a more extrinsic orientation. Originality.
