Abstract Fresh onions are dehydrated to increase their shelf-life. Primarily, open dehydration techniques like solar dehydration come with the problem of contamination through natural air convection. A solar conduction dryer that uses conduction, convection, and radiation for dehydration of food samples is exploited in this study. The food samples are often contaminated by Bacillus and Aspergillus species spores. As a remedy, pulsed light treatment as a non-thermal technology and infrared treatment as a thermal technology are studied and compared. Bacillus cereus and Aspergillus niger spores are chosen as a representative of bacterial and fungal contamination in onions. Dehydrated onion shreds with varying water activities (0.4, 0.5, 0.6) were treated. The spore inactivation was best described by Weibull model as compared with first-order model. Scanning electron microscopy images of the microbial cells showed surface distortions on the bacterial and fungal spores. The effect of the treatment technologies on the colour, flavour (thiosulphinate and pyruvic acid concentration), total phenolic and flavonoid content, and ascorbic acid concentration are compared. Overall, pulsed light treatment showed promising inactivation with a maximum log reduction of 4.5 log B. cereus spores·g−1 and 3.1 log A. niger spores·g−1 at 2.131 J·cm−2 in samples with water activity 0.6. The inactivation rate increased with an increase in water activity. The colour was better retained in pulsed light treated samples. The thiosulphinate content (9.24 μmol·g−1), total phenolics (0.268 mg GAE·g−1), and flavonoid content (0.344 mg QE·g−1) in the sample were improved upon pulsed light exposure. Graphical Abstract

Processing of dehydrated onion shreds involves contamination during peeling, chopping, and dehydration. Pre-treatments such as blanching, dipping and soaking in chemical solutions reduce the contamination prior to dehydration. Post dehydration treatments include thermal and non-thermal technologies. Hot water blanching in presence of CaCl2 as pre-treatment followed by pulsed light of 2208 ± 0.5 J·cm−2 (2100 V, 120 s) as post-dehydration treatment is employed. Further, the microbial quality and other attributes were assessed during the storage at 25, 30, and 37 °C. The population for aerobic mesophiles and yeasts & molds crossed 5 and 4 log CFU∙g−1, respectively after 30, 27, 19 days of storage at 25, 30, and 37 °C, respectively. Browning index, pyruvic acid, total phenols and flavonoids were most sensitive among the color parameters and bioactive compounds degraded during storage. After 30 days of storage at 25 °C, there was reduction of 82% in ascorbic acid, 39% in pyruvic acid, 93% in thiosulphinate, 50% in total phenolics, and 52% in total flavonoids content of the shreds. At 37 °C, the rate of bioactive degradation was higher and the retention in bioactives after 19 days was 24, 56, 35, 35, and 52% of ascorbic acid, pyruvic acid, thiosulphinate, total phenolics, and total flavonoids content, respectively. The pyruvic acid, ascorbic acid, phenolic and flavonoid content in the onion shreds degraded following first order kinetics, whereas thiosulphinates followed zero order degradation. The shelf-life of the pulsed light decontaminated dehydrated onion shreds was 30, 27, 19 days at 25, 30, and 37 °C, respectively. Pulsed light treatment is recommended for dehydrated onion shreds as an effective technology for microbial inactivation.

Background: Vaginal dryness is common during and after menopause due to declining oestrogen, vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), up to about a year after delivery during breast feeding and in many other conditions. This can be distressing to painful for women and may cause discomfort and dyspareunia. This study was performed to evaluate the use and practicability of secretions of male bulbourethral glands (Cowper's glands) to alleviate the discomfort, dyspareunia or pain at sexual activity, because of inadequate lubrication of vagina. Method: When a healthy male is sexually aroused, Cowper's glands produce a mucous-like fluid called pre-ejaculate. This fluid is a clear, colourless, viscous, and salty liquid, which is emitted from the urethra of the penis. A lubrication free wet condom on penis during foreplay can prevent loss of these secretions during an extended foreplay and lubrication around penis due to these secretions can effectively serve as physiological lubricant during coitus. Result: This technique and secretion of Cowper’s glands are a good lubrication for dryness of vagina during coitus. Sexual function assessment revealed a marked improvement in all domains of sexual function to both partners. A physiological secretion being natural to the sexual act and providing motive for extending foreplay; it is arguably the best lubricant for coitus in situations of dry vagina. Conclusion: Supposedly the secretions may also help in reducing dose of HRT for menopause, extended foreplay adds to psychosexual benefits and a boost to sexual hormonal milieu.

Essential oils are natural volatiles extracted using steam. Steam generation is an energy-intensive process and is invariably based on fossil fuels, briquettes or biomass. Based on the volumes of essential oil extracted, it can be considered as significant contributor to greenhouse gases. Though a lot of work is reported on essential oil extraction and characterisation, method for quantification of exact steam requirement and means for achieving it through sustainable source is not much reported.Through this study, steam requirement of 750 g/ml of Betel leaf volatile oil extracted and quantification of energy requirements for the extraction process is determined. For adoption of sustainable and clean energy source, opto-geometric optimisation and concentrating solar collectors (CSC) area calculation are carried out. The design of three CSC, namely, Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR), parabolic dish collector (PDC) and parabolic trough collector (PTC), resulted in 78 m2, 122 m2 and 138.87 m2 of area to meet the steam requirement of the process.Adoption of CSC technologies for steam generation and replacing the prevalent technology needs detailed analysis and techno-economic comparison. This paper also focuses on cost-benefit analysis, taking into account CAPEX, OPEX, life-span, return on investment, levelized energy (steam) cost and the profitability index of net present value, payback period and internal rate of returns to check the economic feasibility of renewable energy. Analysis indicates that the cost associated with unit steam generation through CSC over the specified period is lower than a briquette-based steam generation. On adopting this sustainable technology for betel leaf oil extraction, even if the initial cost seems to be high, the payback period of LFR and PTC are 1.10 and 2.45 years, respectively. Based on this study, CSCs can provide a sustainable green solution for the extraction of essential oils.

Onion and dehydrated onion products are produced and consumed more than any other agriproduct in India. Massive losses are seen due to poor storage conditions, and thereby, economic loss. Dehydration of onion products is commonly employed to extend the shelf-life and facilitate bulk handling. However, spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms have been reported to contaminate onion and its dehydrated products throughout the process line. To comply with the stringent regulatory aspects, optimizing the decontamination process specific to onion products is necessary. This review corroborates the decontamination technologies applied for onion and dehydrated onion products, including thermal, non-thermal, chemical, and biological methods. Further, a comparison of the efficacy of these treatments on fresh and dehydrated onion products along with a general operating cost estimation has been discussed. This will help the industry select the suitable decontamination technique for dehydrated onion products and design the process thereof. The value added by the decontamination process to the industry and the regulatory bodies have been discussed.

ABSTRACT Objective: This bibliometric study aimed to analyze the citation metrics, journal and author characteristics, and subject domains of the 100 top-cited Systematic Reviews (SR) and Meta-Analysis (MA) in orthodontics. Material and Methods: An electronic database search was conducted for SR and MA in the Web of Science on 16th July 2023, without language and time restrictions. Of the 802 hits returned, the 100 top-cited orthodontic articles were shortlisted. They were analyzed for citation metrics, journal characteristics (journal, year of publication, impact factor-IF), author and affiliation characteristics (number, primary and corresponding author’s affiliation, and country), study domain, and keywords. Results: These articles were published from 1996 to 2021 in 20 journals, with an impact factor of 1.9 to 10.5, by 351 researchers affiliated with 104 universities. Their citations ranged from 45 to 344, and 34 poised to be classified as classic (≥ 100 citations). The maximum number of articles was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (n=38), the European Journal of Orthodontics (n=18), and the Angle Orthodontist (n=8). The authors for individual papers ranged from 1 to 10, with 5 being the most common (n=58). Europe had the highest contribution regarding the number of corresponding authors, institutions, and citations. Bone anchorage and orthodontic tooth movement/Biomechanics were the most frequently researched domains (n=11 each). The most common keyword used was Orthodontics (n=19), followed by Systematic Review (n=16) and Meta-analysis (n=9). Conclusion: In general, the top cited SR and MA were published in high-impact orthodontic journals, were multi-authored, and reflected the collaborative work from different universities.

This study aims to investigate the presence of Free-Living Amoebae (FLA), particularly Acanthamoeba spp., in diverse water systems and body fluids within a hospital. Water and body fluid samples were collected from various locations. Cultivation of FLA was performed using Non-Nutrient Agar (NNA) culture with Escherichia coli, and microscopic observations after staining. Microscopic observations revealed the presence of Acanthamoeba spp. in pre-dialysis tank water and dental flush water samples. The identification of Acanthamoeba in specific water sources underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and preventive strategies to mitigate potential health risks.

Plurimonism is a new philosophy and method of science. It holds that the revolution in computer science and artificial intelligence has reached the point that all the sciences in general can now account for the complex relations of an irreducible plurality of unique observers engaged in describing the same event. Plurimonism seeks to describe the conscious and unconscious relations of the scientific observer during the act of observation of a given event while preserving the historical uniqueness and indivisible identity of each such observer. Using the framework of plurimonism, we mathematically formulate the problem of empathy. This self-reflective mathematical model entails four components of the empathic process involving two observers. They are: 1) the self; 2) the self's-other; 3) the other; and 4) the other's-self. It measures the degree of accuracy of the therapist-observer's empathy, as well as conscious and unconscious processes involved in the patient-observer's idealization and the therapist-observer's confidence in clinical psychotherapy. Ratings are obtained from both patient and therapist from four different points of view. The plural views of the patient's global assessment of functioning (GAF) are from: 1) the therapist's view (TGAF); 2) the patient's view (PGAF); 3) the therapist empathic view (TEGAF), which represents the therapist's estimate of PGAF; and 4) the patient's empathic estimate of the TGAF. The GAF scale is the standard dimensional 100-point-scale measure used in psychiatry for recording a patient's functioning. The patient's estimate of the therapist's degree of accuracy as well as the therapist's confidence in his or her empathic accuracy is also represented. Three formulae are presented that describe the degree of the therapist's empathic accuracy, the patient's over-idealization/under-idealization, and the therapist's over-confidence/under-confidence. The concept of empathy is here restricted to mean the degree to which one observer can take the point of view of another observer when both are observing the same thing. ABSTRACTBlood-borne infections caused by the carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex (CR-ECC) are major public threats with respect to the challenges encountered during treatment. This study describes the whole genome sequencing-based molecular characteristics of blood isolates (n = 70) of CR-ECC from patients admitted to the intensive care unit of tertiary care hospitals in Kolkata, India, during 2017–2022 with respect to species identification, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiling, mechanism of drug resistance, and molecular subtypes. Vitek2 MALDI and species-specific PCR identified Enterobacter hormaechei subsp. xiangfangensis (47.14%) as the emerging CR-ECC subspecies in Kolkata. The predominating carbapenemase and extended-spectrum β-lactamase genes found were blaNDM-1 (51.42%) and blaCTX-M-15 (27%), respectively. Besides, blaNDM-4, blaNDM-5, blaNDM-7, blaCMH-3, blaSFO-1, blaOXA-181, blaOXA-232, blaKPC-3, and blaDHA-7 genes were also detected, which were not previously reported from India. A multitude of Class 1 integrons (including In180, In4874, In4887, and In4888, which were novel) and plasmid replicon types (IncFIB, IncFII, IncX3, IncHI1-HI2, IncC, and IncR) involved in AMR dissemination were identified. Reverse transcription-PCR and western blot revealed that carbapenem resistance in non-carbapenemase-producing CR-ECC isolates was contributed by elevated levels of ampC, overexpression of acrAB, and loss of ompF. A total of 30 distinct sequence types (STs) were ascertained by multi-locus sequence typing; of which, ST2011, ST2018, ST2055, ST2721, and ST2722 were novel STs. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis showed heterogeneity (69 pulsotypes with a similarity coefficient of 48.40%) among the circulating isolates, suggesting multiple reservoirs of infections in humans. Phylogenetically and genetically diverse CR-ECC with multiple AMR mechanisms mandates close monitoring of nosocomial infections caused by these isolates to forestall the transmission and dissemination of AMR.IMPORTANCEThe emergence and extensive dissemination of the carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex (CR-ECC) have positioned it as a critical nosocomial global pathogen. The dearth of a comprehensive molecular study pertaining to CR-ECC necessitated this study, which is the first of its kind from India. Characterization of blood isolates of CR-ECC over the last 6 years revealed Enterobacter hormaechei subsp. xiangfangensis as the most prevalent subsp., exhibiting resistance to almost all antibiotics currently in use and harboring diverse transmissible carbapenemase genes. Besides the predominating blaNDM-1 and blaCTX-M-15, we document diverse carbapenemase and AmpC genes, such as blaNDM-4, blaNDM-7, blaOXA-181, blaOXA-232, blaKPC-3, blaCMH-3, blaSFO-1, and blaDHA-7, in CR-ECC, which were not previously reported from India. Furthermore, novel integrons and sequence types were identified. Our findings emphasize the need for strengthened vigilance for molecular epidemiological surveillance of CR-ECC due to the presence of epidemic clones with a phylogenetically diverse and wide array of antimicrobial resistance genes in vulnerable populations.

Increasing CO2 concentration, temperature rise, and changes in rainfall due to climate change are expected to influence groundwater resources in irrigated agricultural regions. A simulation study using AquaCrop and MODFLOW models was undertaken to assess the combined effects of increasing CO2 concentrations, temperature, and rainfall changes on groundwater behavior in a rice–wheat cropping region of northwest India. Simulations were carried out for the 2016–2099 period under two scenarios: increasing CO2 concentrations corresponding to different RCPs (Scenario-I) and at a constant CO2 concentration of 369.4 ppm (Scenario-II). The results indicate that elevated CO2 negates the effect of rising temperature on evapotranspiration (ET) and water demand, and thus, lower ET is simulated under Scenario-I than Scenario-II for different RCPs during the future periods. The lower projected ET resulted in lower rice (2.3%–6.3%) and wheat (1.4%–16.1%) irrigation demand under Scenario-I than under Scenario-II. Of all RCPs, the lowest groundwater level (GWL) decline of 9.2, 20.5, and 24.4 m from the reference GWL (18.85 m) at the end of the early, mid-, and end-century periods, respectively, is projected under RCP8.5 and Scenario-I. Simulation results indicate that CO2 concentration plays an important role while assessing climate change effects on groundwater in irrigated agricultural systems. HIGHLIGHTS Quantified crop water budgeting components and their effect on groundwater levels in response to elevated CO2 concentration.; Rice irrigation requirement (IR) would decrease slightly while wheat IR significantly increased in future periods both in elevated CO2 and constant CO2 concentration scenarios.; Groundwater level is projected to decline less in elevated CO2 than in constant CO2 concentration scenario.;
