This article examines the value of externalities created by the presence of sex workers in the city. Although a legal paid‐sex industry might contribute to the economy, it may also generate negative externalities. To identify the net impact of overt prostitution, we estimate changes in housing prices following the sudden closure of the two red light districts (RLDs) in the Dutch City of Utrecht. Our results show that the capitalization effect of RLDs is spatially heterogeneous. While some areas are unaffected, others are up to 12% more expensive if far from operating brothels. Interestingly, though, evidence also shows that RLDs increase local employment in a variety of sectors. All the aversion to living near RLDs is instead explained by petty crimes. Like Bernstein, Hearne approaches the subject from both above and below, examining the bureaucratic structures and practices with which official institutions tried to manage the trade in sexual services, on the one hand, while investigating the experience of the various participants, on the other. It has been twenty-five years since the appearance of Laurie Bernstein's I Sonia's Daughters: Prostitutes and Their Regulation in Imperial Russia i (1996), a book that emerged in the context of the still relatively new fields of the history of sexuality and women's history. Second, it shows that the violence in these German military brothels existed within a broader framework of pervasive and ongoing sexualized violence that accompanied German occupation, which impacted all aspects of the German occupation regime in Rostov-on-Don. After this, soldiers waited in the main floor hall until a woman was available, at which point they would accompany them upstairs to the woman's assigned "cabinet."[24] Voronina reported that there were sometimes brawls involving soldiers in the downstairs hall, but that the commandant quickly calmed the men down.[25] As soon as one soldier left, a woman would immediately proceed to her next client. "In her work at the casino", Voronina explained, "she saw the only hope of escape from physical torture and begged [that I] help her get a job as a 'waitress.'" Knowing how the "waitresses" at the "casino" were treated, Voronina worked hard to calm the girl down and convince her not to work in the brothel.[69] Fear of deportation for forced labor seems to have been the animating motivation for many Rostov residents to volunteer to work in the city. By 1890, the French government under the Third Republic seemed on the brink of political and social disaster. Anarchists were planting bombs in Parisian cafes, the birthrate was declining, and Germany—who had won a war against France in 1870—was surpassing her economically. In this time of political and social anxiety, women became increasingly important in the rhetoric of the Third Republic, as the regime determined to actively support the decorative arts in an effort to revive France as the world’s producer of fine feminine luxury goods. This rhetoric relied on a clear social and physical separation between the bourgeois woman (purveyor of the home and mother of France’s future citizens) and the prostitute (society’s necessary receptacle for the dangerous male lust that found no place in the bourgeois home).Using two paintings of feminine interiors—one of a bourgeois home, the other of a brothel—by contemporary painters Edouard Vuillard and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, respectively, this paper explores the ways in which the opposition of the bourgeois woman to the prostitute became increasingly difficult to maintain as the century turned. The boundaries between the bourgeois home and the brothel began to rupture with the migration and mixing of social and class signifiers within these highly charged spaces, and with the threatening emergence of a new, highly independent bourgeois woman (femme nouvelle). The collapse of this rigid distinction between the two spaces reflected more serious social changes and threats as the Third Republic descended into the political turmoil that would lead ultimately to its war with Germany in 1914.

Since prostitution for Thai has been much less studied that sex tourism, this article propose a brief history of sex work in Thailand, from the kingdom of Ayutthaya (14th-18th century) to the present time. The aim is first to highlight—as all over the world—the foremost prominence of the commercial aspect, prostitution being a trading exchange of a sexual service against payment. However, in present-day Thailand, and, at least for the last half-century, money is just like the true god (ngoen khue prachao) and the prospect to obtain more money tolerates any behavior and any corruption. Still to comprehend better the unusual development of prostitution in Thailand it is necessary to unveil the socio-cultural fertilizers. One of them could be the peculiar situation of the mae may, a term inappropriately translated by widow in bilingual dictionaries, following the first lexicographers of the Thai who were all Christian missionaries.

The media have shown lately the problem of Brazilian women trade to work in brothels in Europe. Although it is seen as a current issue, the « white slave trade » as it became known historically dates back to the nineteenth century. Our work aims to show how it has developed during this time in reverse, ie bringing European women to Brazilian brothels, more specifically in Rio de Janeiro. Recruited with promises of good jobs or advantageous marriages, they became prey to powerful mafias led by Jews from Eastern Europe, Portuguese and Brazilian. From Rio de Janeiro, they went to brothels of Montevideo and Buenos Aires. Living in miserable conditions, and target of violence, trade prostitutes marked an era in the Rio venal sexuality scenario.

Miss Laura's Social Club is a restored Victorian brothel that serves as the visitors' center for Fort Smith, Arkansas. Miss Laura's reflects the values and power structures of the community in which it exists reinforcing the dominance of privileged white males. This qualitative study analyzed the results of three previous studies about Miss Laura's--a case study, a social science portraiture study, and an embedded thematic analysis. The primary research question was What is the master narrative of Miss Laura's Social Club? The original case study consisted of semi-structured interviews with three docents and 16 visitors to the site, four site visits, and a textual analysis of online marketing materials. Using emergent coding the researchers developed three key areas in which they critiqued and contested the narrative of Miss Laura's: (1) the madams were depicted as feminist figures; (2) the prostitutes were depicted using "Cinderella" imagery; and (3) the narrative explicitly excluded the stories of those who were not privileged and white. Discussion points included the conflict inherent in Miss Laura's dual roles as a marketing tool and as a museum, the transformative learning the researchers experienced, and the responsibilities of adult educators and museum staff to represent marginalized voices. La prostitución ha sido una conducta permitida por el derecho histórico español hasta el siglo XVII. Esta práctica suponía un importante negocio económico que fue aprovechado fundamentalmente por los poderes públicos municipales. Pero en el año 1623, el rey Felipe IV prohibió toda forma de prostitución, decretando el cierre de las mancebías públicas. Este artículo pretende buscar las causas que determinaron dicha prohibición y el radical cambio de tendencia en el derecho penal respecto a la persecución de esta conducta.

The article focuses on Master's thesis by Maren Röger on the analysis of the racist, sexist and classist dimensions of discrimination, which led to the transfer to the Wehrmacht brothel, and monograph on forced prostitution in Poland during World War II because of the chronological sequence.

The work is related to the existence of three Bjelovar Bordellos of early 20th century with epidemic/endemic existence of venereal disease, despite the then public health and police regulations. The article explores the feminist historiography of scholar Bettina Bradbury. The author reflects on the publication of books by Bradbury which include "Working Families: Age, Gender, and Daily Survival in Industrializing Montreal" and "Wife to Widow: Lives, Laws, and Politics in 19th-Century Montreal." Emphasis is given to the history of prostitution in relation to household economy, brothels in Montreal, Quebec, and the economic independence of Canadian women. Other topics include the retail sale of alcoholic beverages, women holding tavern licenses, and the drinking habits of women.

The article looks at the missionary reports of the New York Female Moral Reform Society (FMRS), with a particular focus on the group's missionary activities in brothels during the early 19th century. Details on missionaries' conceptions of gender roles and on themes of seduction and abandonment in the reports are presented. It is suggested that many brothel workers did not conform to missionaries' gendered expectations regarding agency and sexuality.

The present paper examines the household economies of male industrial workers of India after their sudden retrenchment. They had been victims of a defective industrial policy, and they did not get compensation as per the recruitment policy of the Government of India. As they were ill-prepared for retrenchment, they have struggled over extended periods. In a desperate attempt at household survival, their wives chose the sex trade. These women used a brothel in Kolkata to ply the sex trade as floating sex workers. They operated in a clandestine manner as the brothel was restricted to daytime use. They used their earnings to manage their households while their husbands were still unemployed. Thus, in an era of women's empowerment, women appeared to have no employment alternatives during crisis periods. As a result, the relationship between women and household management during a household's economic crisis has emerged as a new theme in the discourse on future socio-economic relations and the status of women.
