Abstract
- Like Bernstein, Hearne approaches the subject from both above and below, examining the bureaucratic structures and practices with which official institutions tried to manage the trade in sexual services, on the one hand, while investigating the experience of the various participants, on the other. It has been twenty-five years since the appearance of Laurie Bernstein's I Sonia's Daughters: Prostitutes and Their Regulation in Imperial Russia i (1996), a book that emerged in the context of the still relatively new fields of the history of sexuality and women's history.
