The continuous development of superconducting electronics is encouraging several studies on hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) based on superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) heterostructures, as either spintronic devices or switchable elements in quantum and classical circuits. Recent experimental evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling and of an incomplete 0-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition in tunnel-ferromagnetic spin-filter JJs could also enhance the capabilities of SFS JJs as active elements. Here, we provide a self-consistent electrodynamic characterization of $\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Gd}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$ spin-filter JJs as a function of the barrier thickness, disentangling the high-frequency dissipation effects due to the environment from the intrinsic low-frequency dissipation processes. The fitting of the $I$-$V$ characteristics at 4.2 K and at 300 mK by using the tunnel-junction-microscopic model allows us to determine the subgap resistance ${R}_{\mathrm{sg}}$, the quality factor $Q$, and the junction capacitance $C$. These results provide the scaling behavior of the electrodynamic parameters as a function of the barrier thickness, which represents a fundamental step for the feasibility of tunnel-ferromagnetic JJs as active elements in quantum and classical circuits, and are of general interest for tunnel junctions other than conventional SIS JJs.

The study of superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces has generated great interest in the last decades, leading to the observation of spin-aligned triplet supercurrents and $0--\ensuremath{\pi}$ transitions in Josephson junctions where two superconductors are separated by an itinerant ferromagnet. Recently, spin-filter Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic barriers have shown unique transport properties, when compared to standard metallic ferromagnetic junctions, due to the intrinsically nondissipative nature of the tunneling process. Here we present the first extensive characterization of spin polarized Josephson junctions down to 0.3 K, and the first evidence of an incomplete $0--\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition in highly spin polarized tunnel ferromagnetic junctions. Experimental data are consistent with a progressive enhancement of the magnetic activity with the increase of the barrier thickness, as neatly captured by the simplest theoretical approach including a nonuniform exchange field. For very long junctions, unconventional magnetic activity of the barrier points to the presence of spin-triplet correlations.

Recent discoveries from superconductor (S)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures include π-junctions, triplet pairing, critical temperature (Tc) control in FM/S/FM superconducting spin valves (SSVs) and critical current control in S/FM/N/FM/S spin valve Josephson junctions (N: normal metal). In all cases, the magnetic state of the device, generally set by the applied field, controls the superconducting response. We report here the observation of the converse effect, that is, direct superconducting control of the magnetic state in GdN/Nb/GdN SSVs. A model for an antiferromagnetic effective exchange interaction based on the coupling of the superconducting condensation energy to the magnetic state can explain the Nb thickness and temperature dependence of this effect. This superconducting exchange interaction is fundamentally different in origin from the various exchange coupling phenomena that underlie conventional spin electronics (spintronics), and provides a mechanism for the active control of the magnetic state in superconducting spintronics.

The interplay between superconducting and ferromagnetic order pa¬rameters in S/F interfaces gives rise to a wide range of peculiar properties with applications in high-efficiency computation and in the emerging field of super¬conducting spintronics. In NbN/GdN/NbN Josephson junctions, GdN barriers give unique properties due to the double insulting and ferromagnetic nature of the material, as demonstrated in previous works. Here we focus on tunneling spectroscopy of these junctions down to 0.3 K when changing the barrier thick¬ness, which contributes to complete a consistent picture on the physics of these junctions and supports the previous indications of equal-spin Cooper pairs con¬tributing to the total supercurrent of the devices.

Spin filter superconducting S/I/N tunnel junctions (NbN/GdN/TiN) show a robust and pronounced zero bias conductance peak at low temperatures, the magnitude of which is several times the normal state conductance of the junction. Interfacing superconductors with strongly spin-polarized magnetic materials opens the possibility to discover new spintronic devices in which spin-triplet Cooper pairs play a key role. Motivated by the recent derivation of spin-polarized quasiclassical boundary conditions capable of describing such a scenario in the diffusive limit, we consider the emergent physics in hybrid structures comprised of a conventional s-wave superconductor (e.g. Nb, Al) and either strongly spin-polarized ferromagnetic insulators (e.g. EuO, GdN) or halfmetallic ferromagnets (e.g. CrO2, LCMO). In contrast to most previous works, we focus on how the superconductor itself is influenced by the proximity effect, and how the generated triplet Cooper pairs manifest themselves in the self-consistently computed density of states (DOS) and the superconducting critical temperature Tc. We provide a comprehensive treatment of how the superconductor and its properties are affected by the triplet pairs, demonstrating that our theory can reproduce the recent observation of an unusually large zero-energy peak in a superconductor interfaced with a half-metal, which even exceeds the normal-state DOS. We also discuss the recent observation of a large superconducting spin-valve effect with a Tc change ~1K in superconductor/half-metal structures, in which case our results indicate that the experiment cannot be explained fully by a long-ranged triplet proximity effect., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, published version

The interfacial coupling of two materials with different ordered phases, such as a superconductor (S) and a ferromagnet (F) is driving new fundamental physics and innovative applications. For example, the creation of spin-filter Josephson junctions and the demonstration of triplet supercurrents have suggested the potential of a dissipationless version of spintronics based on unconventional superconductivity. Here we demonstrate evidence for active quantum applications of S-F-S junctions, through the observation of macroscopic quantum tunneling in Josephson junctions with GdN ferromagnetic insulator barriers. We prove a clear transition from thermal to quantum regime at a crossover temperature of about 100 mK at zero magnetic field in junctions which demonstrate a clear signature of unconventional superconductivity. Following previous demonstration of passive S-F-S phase shifters in a phase qubit, our result paves the way to the active use of spin filter Josephson systems in quantum hybrid circuits., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The differential conductance of NbN/GdN/TiN superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/normal-metal junctions, with a thick NbN layer shows a large zero-field voltage offset interpreted as a spin-filtered Zeeman splitting of the NbN density of states by an effective exchange field $({H}_{0})$ from the GdN. The splitting increases linearly, with applied field $({H}_{\mathrm{ext}})$ enabling the relative sign of ${H}_{0}$ and ${H}_{\mathrm{ext}}$ to be determined. We show that the short NbN coherence length concentrates ${H}_{0}$ at the NbN/GdN interface and eliminates any averaging over the GdN domain structure leading to a large zero-field splitting.

Considerable evidence for proximity-induced triplet superconductivity on the ferromagnetic side of a superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) interface now exists; however, the corresponding effect on the superconductor side has hardly been addressed. We have performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on NbN superconducting thin films proximity coupled to the half-metallic ferromagnet La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) as a function of magnetic field. We have found that at zero and low applied magnetic fields the tunneling spectra on NbN typically show an anomalous gap structure with suppressed coherence peaks and, in some cases, a zero-bias conductance peak. As the field increases to the magnetic saturation of LCMO where the magnetization is homogeneous, the spectra become more BCS-like and the critical temperature of the NbN increases, implying a reduced proximity effect. Our results therefore suggest that triplet-pairing correlations are also induced in the S side of an S-F bilayer., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We have investigated NbN-DyN-NbN junctions with 1 to 10 nm thick DyN barriers. A crossover from diffusive (hopping) to tunneling-type transport was found in these junctions as the DyN thickness is reduced below $\ensuremath{\sim}$4 nm. We have also made a detailed study of magnetic and electrical properties of thicker DyN thin films deposited under similar conditions; DyN films were found to be ferromagnetic with ${T}_{\text{Curie}}\ensuremath{\sim}35\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5$ K. Electrical transport of the junctions with $\ensuremath{\sim}$10 nm DyN was understood in terms of Shklovskii-Efros (SE)-type variable range hopping (VRH) at low temperature between 90 and 35 K. We estimated localization length $\ensuremath{\xi}=5.6$ nm in this temperature range. Temperature dependence of resistance was found to deviate from SE-VRH below 35 K along with large suppression of resistance with magnetic field. This is correlated with onset of magnetism below 35 K. Large butterfly-shaped MR up to $\ensuremath{\sim}$40$%$ was found for the $\ensuremath{\sim}$10 nm thick DyN junction at 2 K. In the tunneling regime, barrier height of the tunnel junction was estimated $\ensuremath{\sim}$50 meV from the Simmons model. Signatures of spin filtering was found in temperature dependence of resistance in tunnel junction with $\ensuremath{\sim}$3 nm thick DyN. Cooper pair tunneling in these junctions below ${T}_{C}$ ($\ensuremath{\sim}$10.8 K) of NbN was understood according to S-I-S tunneling current model. We found coherent tunneling of Cooper pairs through a $\ensuremath{\sim}$1 nm thick DyN tunnel barrier with critical current ${I}_{C}\ensuremath{\sim}12$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$A. The critical current also showed modulation with magnetic field.

Higher harmonics in current-phase relations of Josephson Junctions are predicted to be observed when the first harmonic is suppressed. Conventional theoretical models predict higher harmonics to be extremely sensitive to changes in barrier thickness, temperature, and so on. Here we report experiments with Josephson junctions incorporating a spin-dependent tunnelling barrier, revealing a current-phase relation for highly spin polarized barriers that is purely second harmonic in nature and is insensitive to changes in barrier thickness. This observation implies that the standard theory of Cooper pair transport through tunnelling barriers is not applicable for spin-dependent tunnelling barriers.

Tunnel junctions incorporating GdN ferromagnetic semiconductor barriers show a spin polarization exceeding 90% and a high conductance. These devices show an unusual low-bias conductance peak arising from a strong bias-dependence of the spin polarization. This originates from a strong magneto-electric coupling within a double Schottky barrier formed with the NbN electrodes.
