Precise electromagnetic transient simulation of induction motors (IMs) under voltage sag condition is necessary in Electro‐Magnetic Transient Programme. Although traditional fifth‐order model can accurately reflect the electromagnetic transient behaviour of IMs, the disadvantage of massive computation limits its application in the large‐scale system simulation. Considering voltage sag is a typical power quality issue, a novel reduced‐order electromagnetic transient model based on equivalent flux linkage derivative is proposed to shorten simulation time during voltage sag. When characteristic parameters of voltage sag are given, an equivalent flux linkage derivative can be obtained simply, and the proposed model can effectively shorten the simulation time while ensuring accuracy of the fifth‐order model. Simulation results of small capacity (5.5‐kW) and large capacity (315‐kW and 1600‐kW) IMs in simple system and IEEE 9‐bus system confirm the applicability of the proposed model. It is estimated that simulation time of the proposed model decreases by 76% compared with the fifth‐order model. In ultra‐high speed (UHS) motor applications, full SIC two‐level (2L) inverters with high switching frequencies are generally used due to their lower cost. However, even with the usage of all WBG power devices, high‐frequency hard‐switched 2L inverters still do not achieve optimal efficiency characteristics. As a result, in order to simultaneously reduce the switching frequency and enhance overall efficiency, recently three‐level (3L) topologies have emerged as a promising solution. Nevertheless, to fully meet the requirements of UHS applications, the switching frequency of 3L inverters should be increased beyond 30 kHz, which necessitates the usage of all SIC power devices. This, in turn, leads to a potential drawback where the cost of the drive system may become prohibitively high due to the requirement of all SIC switches. To address this issue and reduce the cost of a full SIC 3L inverter, a new 3L simplified sparse NPC (SSNPC) topology is proposed in this work. The operational principle of this topology, its distinctive control features, and the advantages it offers specifically for UHS applications are presented. Additionally, to further increase the efficiency and reduce the influence of dead time at low speeds, a new switching sequence is introduced. A stacked polyphase bridge converter consists of multiple standard, three‐phase two‐level voltage source inverters connected in series to the same dc voltage source. The authors present a decentralised and dynamic dc‐bus reconfiguration strategy for this type of converter. The innovation of the proposed strategy lies in its ability to isolate or reactivate one of the inverters in the series connection online, even in motoring mode, enabling increased fault tolerance and an extended speed range. Both the required hardware alterations and the multi‐agent control strategy are addressed. Its major benefits compared to the state‐of‐the‐art are that only two additional active, unidirectional semiconductor switches are required per inverter, and that the control is based on local computations, local measurements and neighbour‐to‐neighbour communication only. Hence, the scalability and reliability of the hardware are extended towards the control. Simulations and experimental results on a 4 kW modular axial‐flux PMSM prove the feasibility of the concept, and validate that the dc‐bus can be reconfigured in 100 ms, without torque interruption. Induction motors (IMs) are one of the most widely used motor types in the industry due to their low cost, high reliability, and efficiency. Nevertheless, like other types of AC motors, they are prone to various faults. In this article, a low-cost embedded system based on a microcontroller with the ARM Cortex-M4 core is proposed for the extraction of stator winding faults (interturn short circuits) and an unbalanced supply voltage of the induction motor drive. The voltage induced in the measurement coil by the axial flux was used as a source of diagnostic information. The process of signal measurement, acquisition, and processing using a cost-optimized embedded system (NUCLEO-L476RG), with the potential for industrial deployment, is described in detail. In addition, the analysis of the possibility of distinguishing between interturn short circuits and unbalanced supply voltage was carried out. The effect of motor operating conditions and fault severity on the symptom extraction process was also studied. The application of electrical drives in the control of centrifugal fans and pumps is a well-established area that leads to substantial energy savings. It requires electrical and automation engineers to have some knowledge relevant to drives about fan and pump modelling since ignoring or oversimplifying fan/pump modelling for the intended drive design compromises the required control quality. This paper improves the existing dynamical models of fans and pumps integrated with induction motors via neural network estimation of overall fan/pump efficiency; this estimation is based on the voltage frequency of the driving induction motor, pressure, and flow rate, followed by the separation of the fan's or pump's own efficiency for the motor load torque computation, enhancing the accuracy due to the correct reflection of the power balance. The model is developed with a view to being convenient for control design applications. For the first time for dynamical models, it is verified experimentally, justifying the necessity of the first-order nonlinear differential equation for the flow rate. The validation includes a direct approach based on analysis of transient behaviour caused by a small-step perturbation of the frequency of the motor voltages and an indirect approach based on the introduced concept of the dynamical flow rate and pressure estimators. In order to ensure the high precision and good dynamic characteristics of the dual‐axis linear motor when machining components, the tracking error and contour error should be reduced with more complex machining trajectory. In this study, the characteristic model of position control of the linear motor is established by using the modelling principle of the characteristic model, and the intelligent adaptive controller is designed. In addition, a new calculation method of the equivalent contour error is proposed innovatively, and the dual axis is compensated by proportional feedback control, to improve the contour accuracy of the permanent magnet synchronous linear motor dual‐axis control system. Finally, through the simulation and experiment of the dual‐axis motor platform, the effectiveness of the proposed contour error calculation method and the intelligent adaptive controller can make the dual‐axis motion control system have higher accuracy and strong robustness and can also make the motor run more smoothly. To solve the problems mechanically caused by parallel direct‐drive permanent magnet motors (DD‐PMSM). This paper proposes a concave‐core stator direct‐drive permanent magnet motor (CCSDD‐PMSM) structure. In this study, an auxiliary yoke structure is proposed to optimise the magnetic circuit and analyse the cogging torque to achieve the minimum detent force. Based on the unit motor and combined with the magnetomotive force to analyse the symmetry of different winding distributions, the stability characteristics of the motor are studied. The magnetic field distribution of the motor load air gap is calculated using the finite element method. The contribution of different spatial order harmonics to the motor output torque is calculated using the Maxwell tensor method. The torque calculation expression of the CCSDD‐PMSM is given. This article presents a comprehensive review of reduced device count multilevel inverter (RDC MLI) topologies for PV systems. Multilevel inverters are widely used in medium-voltage and high-power applications such as wireless power transform applications, flexible AC transmission (FACT), active filters, AC motor drives, high-voltage DC transmission (HVDC), and renewable energy sources due to their high modularity and high-power quality output. Multilevel inverters have the ability to diminish the harmonics content in the output voltage by applying various modulation techniques. The literature in this field showed that the high-power quality and high modularity of the output demand an undeniable need for multilevel inverter topology. Research in this field has identified various multilevel inverter topologies, each possessing their own merits and demerits. The ubiquitous availability of multilevel inverter topologies illustrates the complexity of their accurate selection. To avoid such complexity, this review shows the state of the art of various reduced device count (RDC) multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies. Details of the various RDC MLIs, along with their comparisons, are provided in this paper. This review will be an important reference tool for future work on RDC MLI for photovoltaic (PV) systems. Condition monitoring in electric motor drives is essential for operation continuity. This article provides a review of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) methods for electric motor drives. It first covers various types of faults, their mechanisms, and approaches to detect and diagnose them. The article categorizes faults into machine faults, power electronics (PE) faults, DC link capacitor faults, and sensor faults, and discusses FDD methods. FDD methods for machines are categorized as statistical methods, machine-learning methods, and deep-learning methods. PE FDD methods are divided into logic-based, residual-based, and controller-aided methods. DC link capacitor and sensor faults are briefly explained. Machine and PE faults are listed and presented as tables for easy comparison and fast referencing. Most papers are selected from the past five years but older references are added when necessary. Inverters are DC to AC power converters that are widely used in AC motor drives and distributed energy generation systems. Multi-Level Inverters (MLIs) have emerged as the preferred inverter technology because of their advantages of reduced switching losses and better harmonic profile. This paper deals with the Minimization of Total Harmonic Distortion (MTHD) of Symmetric Cascaded H-bridge Multi-Level Inverter (SCMLI) and Asymmetric Cascaded H-bridge Multi-Level Inverter (ACMLI). A hybrid memetic algorithm composed of heuristic PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm and traditional MAS (Mesh Adaptive direct Search) is proposed to optimize the switching angles. In Photo Voltaic (PV) system, the input DC voltage generally varies from its nominal value due to the change in temperature and irradiance. Thus, the sensitivity analysis of THD and harmonics is also carried out considering the variations with non-integer magnitudes of input DC sources. The experimental prototype of SCMLI and ACMLI topology is developed and validated with simulation results. The position sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), with its simple structure, is applied in the aerospace field with high reliability requirements. To drive PMSM safely, the three‐phase current measured from the driver needs to be isolated for the closed‐loop control. And then, the accuracy current measurement is crucial for achieving optimal motor performance. In the paper, current transformer (CT) with centre taps is employed to isolate and measure the high‐frequency current of the inverter switch. Additionally, an algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the switch current into the low‐frequency phase current. Subsequently, the measuring method and the algorithm are applied to an inverter platform, which drives a 100W PMSM. Finally, the reconstructed phase current waveform is compared with the measured phase current waveform, and the experimental results show that the above method is effective and feasible. The design and optimisation of a permanent magnet‐assisted synchronous reluctance (PMaSynR) traction machine is described to improve its energy efficiency over a selection of driving cycles, when installed on a four‐wheel‐drive electrically powered vehicle for urban use, with two on‐board powertrains. The driving cycle‐based optimisation is defined with the objective of minimising motor energy loss under strict size constraints, while maintaining the peak torque and restricting the torque ripple. The key design parameters that exert the most significant influence on the selected performance indicators are identified through a parametric sensitivity analysis. The optimisation brings a motor design that is characterised by an energy loss reduction of 8.2% over the WLTP Class 2 driving cycle and 11.7% over the NEDC and Artemis Urban driving cycles, at the price of a 4.7% peak torque reduction with respect to the baseline machine. Additional analysis, implemented outside the optimisation framework, revealed that different coil turn adjustments would reduce the energy loss along the considered driving cycles. In this study, speed control of alternative current (AC) universal motor is made in a computerized manner using PIC16F84A and PIC18F2550. AC universal motor speed control is realized by triggering the motor power circuit, triac with the phase angle control method by programming PIC16F84A. In the phase angle control method zero crossing points of AC line signal are detected by zero crossing detector and applied to the analog input of PIC16F84A. Zero crossing information applied to the microcontroller has provided phase control at a desired angle value in each alternance of the line. Motor speed control commands via computer are made by means of the control panel designed under Visual Basic 6.0 platform by using PIC18F2550 microcontroller based control card. Application results show that the speed control performed provides practical and easy control, is convenient, sensitive, and economic and also can immediately be adapted to different applications compared to the present analog control. Given the existence of detent force, the positioning accuracy of permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) with an iron core worsens in its application in the field of the precision drive. To address this problem, a method is proposed to weaken the detent force of PMLSM with a V‐shaped tooth‐slot structure. The models of the detent force, including the cogging force and end force, are established theoretically. The analytical expressions of cogging force and end force are obtained by analysing the ripple rule of the motor. Then, the tooth‐slot surface of the motor with the V‐shaped tooth‐slot structure conducts infinitesimal processing. The relationship between cogging force, end force, and the V‐shaped depth of the V‐shaped tooth‐slot PMLSM is deduced, respectively, using the integration method. Furthermore, Ansoft finite element simulation software Maxwell module is used to compare the conventional PMLSM, V‐shaped magnetic pole PMLSM, and V‐shaped tooth‐slot PMLSM. The comparison reveals that the V‐shaped tooth‐slot structure has the excellent characteristic of increasing the average value of thrust while reducing the ripple of thrust caused by detent force. A sampling error‐based finite‐set predictive current control (FS‐PCC) is proposed in this article for the open‐end winding induction motor (OEWIM) drive. The proposed scheme controls the zero‐sequence current (ZSC) alongside the stator currents. In a model‐free approach, this method predicts the future of ZSC and stator current components by the stator current and voltage sampling errors. In this way, the parameters of the OEWIM are not utilised in the prediction algorithm of the FS‐PCC. So, the proposed method is robust against the variation of the parameter. Moreover, this article presents a simple vector selection technique for the FS‐PCC of the OEWIM. The proposed technique has two cost functions and a simple algebraic equation to put the voltage vectors (VVs) in the prediction algorithm. The first cost function uses VVs that do not have the zero‐sequence voltage component. Then, the algebraic equation determines VVs that must be utilised in the second cost function. Finally, the optimum VV is selected by the second cost function. In the proposed scheme, the prediction algorithm is iterated 14 times instead of 27 iterations of the conventional predictive algorithm. So, besides establishing a novel model‐free prediction algorithm, the proposed method has almost 50% fewer calculations. The suppression of torque ripples in an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is essential to improve its efficiency and responsiveness. Here, we report on the development of an electromagnetic energy harvester incorporated into an IPMSM to suppress its torque ripples. The proposed harvester is driven to oscillations by the speed ripple of the AC motor. We derived the motion and circuit equations for the motor and the harvester according to Euler–Lagrange equations. We discussed the principle of electrical power generation and used MATLAB/Simulink numerical simulations to investigate the dynamic behavior of the proposed harvester. Our findings revealed that the active Coriolis force unnecessarily reduces the motor's original torque, leading to unsuccessful power generation. Nevertheless, our results demonstrated that the reactive Coriolis force successfully suppresses the motor torque ripple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents some advances in condition monitoring for rotary machines (particularly for a lathe headstock gearbox) running idle with a constant speed, based on the behaviour of a driving three-phase AC asynchronous induction motor used as a sensor of the mechanical power via the absorbed electrical power. The majority of the variable phenomena involved in this condition monitoring are periodical (machines having rotary parts) and should be mechanically supplied through a variable electrical power absorbed by a motor with periodical components (having frequencies equal to the rotational frequency of the machine parts). The paper proposes some signal processing and analysis methods for the variable part of the absorbed electrical power (or its constituents: active and instantaneous power, instantaneous current, power factor, etc.) in order to achieve a description of these periodical constituents, each one often described as a sum of sinusoidal components with a fundamental and some harmonics. In testing these methods, the paper confirms the hypothesis that the evolution of the electrical power (instantaneous and active) has a predominantly deterministic character. Two main signal analysis methods were used, with good, comparable results: the fast Fourier transform of short and long signal sequences (for the frequency domain) and the curve fitting estimation (in the time domain). The determination of the amplitude, frequency and phase at origin of time for each of these components helps to describe the condition (normal or abnormal) of the machine parts. Several achievements confirm the viability of this study: a characterization of a flat driving belt condition and a beating power phenomenon generated by two rotary shafts inside the gearbox. For comparison purposes, the same signal analysis methods were applied to describe the evolution of the vibration signal and the instantaneous angular speed signal at the gearbox output spindle. The modification of a Smith predictor for the control of plants with response-delay asymmetry has been proposed. It was developed for application in frequency converters for the control of the speed of the AC induction motor drives of pumps used in water- and liquefied-petroleum-gas-supply systems. Such plants are characterized by long response delays, and often these delays are asymmetric, i.e., the response delay to the rising and falling plant-control signal is different. A distinctive feature of the proposed modification is that the value of the response delay in the model of the plant used for the realization of the Smith predictor is switched. The operation of the proposed switched-delay Smith predictor, which was used with the proportional-integral controller, was analyzed using a simulation and experimentally in a real water-supply system. Aiming at the complex electromechanical coupling effect at the joints of RP (rotating parallel) flexible robot, the electromechanical coupling dynamics and vibration response characteristics driven by AC servo motor, as well as the dynamic starting characteristics of the motor are studied. The physical model including electromagnetic and mechanical system coupling is established, and the dynamic model of the whole system is derived based on the overall electromechanical coupling effect and Lagrange Maxwell equation. With the help of Matlab/Simulink, a virtual simulation platform is built to analyze the output speed characteristics of the motor drive end and the motion of the moving base. Finally, through the joint simulation of Matlab/Simulink dynamic simulation model and Adams/controls virtual prototype model, the vibration characteristics of flexible manipulator under electromechanical coupling are obtained. The simulation results show that the electromechanical coupling effect of the motor drive end has a significant impact on the dynamic characteristics of the flexible manipulator. Discrete space vector modulation (DSVM) is employed to synthesize large number of voltage vectors (VVs) to improve the steady-state performance of predictive torque control (PTC). However, enumerating all the VVs in the prediction process increases the computation load of the motor drive. To address this issue, this article proposes a unidirectional VV preselection (UVVP) method for optimizing the performance of DSVM-based PTC of ac motors. The proposed UVVP method divides both voltage space vector diagram (VSVD) and flux space trajectory into twelve 30° based sectors to reduce the impact of candidate VVs with negative effects. At each flux position, the UVVP strategy can restrict the nearest candidate VVs in the 30° based VSVD region within the circular flux trajectory. This is achieved by using the speed direction to avoid the candidate VVs, which are in the same flux sector for reverse flux rotation, hence resulting in significant flux and torque ripple reduction. The main benefit of the proposed method is its simplicity since it only requires the flux sector and speed information as well as it can generate the VV enumerations online while ensuring the reduction of computation burden. The switched reluctance motor (SRM) benefits from its magnet-free nature, robust construction, low cost, flexible controls, and the ability to operate in harsh environments such as high temperatures and high pressure. It has received increasing attention for all-electric or multi-electric aircraft systems and electric vehicles (EVs) as compared with permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and other AC motors in some required high reliability and fault tolerance applications. However, the SRM is prone to considerable wind resistance due to the convex pole structure of the rotor during high-speed rotation, high torque ripple, and also vibration noise. Thus, it is currently a trending topic to develop special SRMs, tailored with high reliability and fault tolerance. Recent research demonstrates several promising feasible solutions to reduce torque ripples and enhance torque density and power factors, including changing topology of SRM, using advanced control methods, as well as different winding configurations. Among these options, the segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM), as a deformation of the conventional topology, is shown to be capable of effectively optimizing the torque performance. Motivated by this advance, this paper aims to present a comprehensive literature review on the SSRM, first illustrating the development of the topology of the SRM, then providing a description as well as a classification according to the topology of the SSRM. In particular, we focus on the evolution of various kinds of segmental topology and improvement measures. Then, we discuss the performance, advantages, and disadvantages of various types of structures in terms of their electromagnetic aspects and their applications. Eventually, several promising future trends and application prospects of the SSRM are prospected, with the aim of shedding light on further research. In sum, the key contribution of this paper is to provide a valuable basis for detailed analyses of the structure and electromagnetic design of the SSRM that are expected to benefit future research. The main contribution of this paper is the verification of a new train control system applied to the drive with a.c. motors that is energy near optimal with respect to electrical and mechanical energy minimization. All simulations are related to the one traction motor yielding its best exploitation. Load torque treated as a state variable consists of constant, linear, and quadratic components as a function of rotor speed. The required performance of the energy-saving control is rendered straightforward using precomputed energy optimal state variables or a prediction of losses for a symmetrical trapezoidal speed profile as the second alternative. An energy-saving reference position generator provides the state variables, which are faithfully followed by a feedback control based on field orientation, which is completed with a matched zero dynamic lag pre-compensator yielding prescribed closed-loop dynamics. Simulation results mutually compared confirm the capability of an overall drive control system to follow generated state variables for two different service conditions and the possibility of energy savings. Continuous pulse width modulation (CPWM) and discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) strategies are used to control voltage source inverter operation. CPWM strategies allow for the reduction of total harmonic distortion values, while DPWM strategies provide a more effective reduction in inverter switching losses. The paper is devoted to the problem of improving the three-phase voltage source inverter efficiency by a controlled transition from CPWM to DPWM. The article proposes an adjustable discontinuous pulse width modulation (ADPWM) method, which means a transition from space vector PWM (refers to CPWM strategies) to DPWM in all inverter phases when the switches' temperatures exceed the allowable value in at least one of the inverter phases. The method flowchart is presented and an algorithm for modifying the envelope curve within one sector is given. In order to test the ADPWM method a Simulink-model of a three-phase voltage source inverter and its control system were developed. A study of the proposed ADPWM method's efficiency in comparison with CPWM, PCDPWM and NCDPWM methods was carried out using a Simulink-model. It was established that the proposed ADPWM method provides dynamic losses reduction in the inverter switches by 2.86 times compared to CPWM and by 1.89 times compared to PCDPWM and NCDPWM methods. Currently, AC motors are a key element of industrial and commercial drive systems. During normal operation, the machines may become damaged, which may pose a threat to the users. Therefore, it is important to develop a fault detection method that allows for the detection of a fault at an early stage. Among the currently used diagnostic systems, applications based on deep neural structures are dynamically developed. Despite many examples of applications of deep learning methods, there are no formal rules for selecting the network structure and parameters of the training process. Such methods would make it possible to shorten the implementation process of deep networks in diagnostic systems of AC machines. The article presents a detailed analysis of the influence of deep convolutional network hyperparameters and training procedures on the precision of the interturn short-circuits detection system. The studies take into account the direct analysis of phase currents through the convolutional network for induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. A novel pulse width modulation (PWM) overmodulation technique based on splitting variable modulating waveform is proposed in this paper. It aims to solve the disadvantages of complex and difficult application of the existing space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) overmodulation algorithm and offer a simpler implementation for overmodulation than classic SVPWM techniques. When the modulation index M is within the linear modulation range [0, 1], the modulating waveform is a sinusoidal wave. With the M is increasing within [1, 4/π], the modulating waveform area expands continuously until it becomes a square wave. The PWM output voltage of the vector control system is implemented by using triangle carrier-based sampling pulse width modulation. Furthermore, digital low-pass filters are used in the d-axis current and q-axis voltage of the system, in order to eliminate the negative influence of the PWM low-order harmonics on the proportion integration control in the overmodulation range. The control software is modified and improved to overcome the shortage of slow response speed. The basic logic of the software is to close the filtering process once the load or speed instructions changes and turn on the filtering process when the transient process ends. The contradiction between the filtering and dynamic responses is thus eliminated by using the basic logic. Compared with the SVPWM working in linear region, the constant torque speed regulating range of the AC motor has an improvement of 10% based on the proposed technique. This paper presents a comparison of an AC radial flux interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor with the distributed winding (DW) and concentrated winding (CW). From time to time, manufacturers of electric vehicles change the design of electric motors, such changes may include changing the DW into CW and vice versa. A change to the winding in a radial permanent magnet synchronous motor may lead to a change in motor parameters during motor operation and /or change in the distribution of the magnetic field and thermal circuit of the electrical machine. The electromagnetic analysis, efficiency map, mechanical stress, and thermal analysis of the machine with the DW and CW are presented in this paper. This article describes the advantages and disadvantages of selected stator winding designs and helps understand manufacturers' designers how the DW and CW play a key role in achieving the designed motor's operational parameters such as continuous performance. Analyzing the performance of both machines will help identify their advantages and disadvantages with regard to thermal phenomena, magnetic field and operational parameters of the presented IPM prototypes. Both prototypes are based on commonly used topologies such as 12/8 (slot/pole) and 30/8 (slot/pole) IPM motors consisting of magnets arranged in a V-shape. The AC IPM motor was designed for an 80 kW propulsion system to achieve 170 N·m at a base speed of 4 500 rpm. Modern CAD tools are utilized throughout the numerical computations based on 2-D finite element methods. Selected test data are used to verify and validate the accuracy of finite element models. With the wide application of inverter-fed motors (IFMs), it is necessary to monitor the groundwall (GW) insulation status to guarantee the reliable operation of motor drive system. This article first proposes a mathematical model of leakage current in IFM to analyze its time domain characteristics, and then an online GW insulation monitoring method is proposed based on the transient characteristics of leakage current. By using the initial oscillation amplitude, oscillation period, and attenuation time of leakage current, the phase, position, and severity of GW insulation degradation can be identified. The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has a structure, in which a permanent magnet is inserted inside the rotor and cogging torque is generated in its structure. To solve this problem, various methods for reducing the cogging torque are being studied. The first method is to reduce the cogging torque by increasing the air-gap length by applying tapering to the rotor or stator core. However, in case of reducing the cogging torque above a certain level, the tapering application method may cause a decrease in output because the position and shape of the permanent magnet are restricted. The second method is to apply skew to the stator or rotor. This is the most reliable way to reduce the cogging torque, but the magnetization rate of the permanent magnet is low, so the manufacturability is low. In this article, we describe a rotor with rotational tapering that fuses the advantages of tapering and skew and offsets the disadvantages. Three phase inverters with switching frequencies above 100 kHz have recently become feasible thanks to the significant progress made in wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor technology. The main drivers behind the intense research and development of these ultrahigh switching frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverters are the extraordinary gravimetric and volumetric power densities that can be achieved. On the other hand, not as much attention has been devoted to the loads that these inverters supply, quite frequently consisting in ac motors. The impact of sub-MHz PWM and of the associated tens of nanoseconds range switching transients on motor terminal overvoltage, common mode currents, and losses are still to be discussed exhaustively. The authors have thus decided to investigate what happens to induction motors (IM) supplied by inverters having switching frequencies up to 350 kHz. After an introduction on WBG semiconductor devices, the article presents some interesting experimental observations conducted on a 1.1 kW four-pole IM fed by a silicon carbide (SiC) inverter. Further insight is provided by tests on a laminated steel toroid, supplied by a single-phase full bridge SiC inverter. The winding segmented permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (WS-PMLSM) generally adopts three-phase windings and the length of the segment is greater than that of the passive mover. This article proposes an innovative design for the module motor, using two-phase integrated single-layer concentric distributed windings, no half-filled slots, and the influence of the pulsating magnetic field generated by the segmented windings is negligible. By analyzing the transition of the segment winding, a variable parameter mathematical model is established, and proportional resonance (PR) control is introduced to eliminate the influence of parameter changes on the model. Meanwhile, the concept of a multiphase motor is introduced for pass-through segment control, with the help of the double $\alpha $ – $\beta $ coordinate transformation method, a new effective coil selection and switching algorithms is constructed, and the thrust forces for the pass-through section are obtained. A novel traction AC motor is proposed by grouping magnets and coils in the stator design with aluminium as substantial for the housing of stator and end ring. The stator back iron is designed with silicon steel. As a result, the magnet can provide more repulsion when revolving the rotor, lowering the input side current. The configuration of the motor was changed to increase its effectiveness in terms of efficiency, and its performance appearances were investigated to compare it to the traditional design of motor. Magnet software was used to simulate the novel constructed induction motor. Most of the factories depend on this induction motor for its significant impact on industrial production and being an essential component of the plant for developing countries' economic development. Using motor solver software, this paper examines the performance characteristics of a novel constructed induction motor, including efficiency, power factor, and losses. Dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines (DTP-PMSMs) have received increasing attention from the industry and academia due to their advantages in lower burden on power inverters when operating in high power applications compared to the three-phase counterparts and low torque ripples. In this article, it reveals that the favorable low torque ripple characteristic of DTP-PMSM is undermined in the high power and overload operating mode. To solve this problem, this article proposes a novel torque ripple suppression strategy based on optimal harmonic current injection. A mathematical torque ripple model of DTP-PMSM considering the cross-coupling effects between d–q axis and dq-z1z2 axis is built. And based on this model, a detailed analysis is carried out to obtain the optimal harmonic current. The theoretical analysis also guarantees that the induced machine loss is minimum. Moreover, the proposed strategy has good dynamic performance since the algorithm involves no iterative computation and is computationally effective, which is proved on a laboratory DTP-PMSM system. The effect of parameter variation is also discussed and tested. The experiment results prove that the influence of magnetic saturation on torque ripple can be effectively suppressed. A laboratory modeled dryer fully automated was fabricated for monitoring and controlling the drying of agricultural products. Instrumentations were installed for monitoring the rate of moisture remover using Aluminum Load Cell, interfaced to a personal computer at an interval of 30 seconds. A voltage/frequency AC motor speed controller for air flow rate, temperature controller thermocouples were installed for monitoring the temperature at 8 different points on the sample tray which were later logged and displayed on a personal computer via the thermocouple Logger. Five treatments of the cassava mash samples in three replicates were dried and monitored within the automatic control dryer. The result of the evaluation for drying kinetics of Industrial Cassava mash shows that, the system allowed the modeled dryer to operate at a constant temperature with desired airflow and also provided full control of the temperature and drying airflow. Unavoidably, the controlsystem of any permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is subjected to perturbations, e.g., motor nonidealities and inverter nonlinearities. To reject these perturbations, a new super-twisting (ST) control variant, called speed adaptive super-twisting (S-AST) control, is proposed in this paper. In the S-AST control, a proportional-integral (PI) and a ST controllers are merged using an adaptive law that is based on the motor speed measurement. This is done to reduce the chattering problems that the standard ST control presents. In addition, a mathematical design for the S-AST control is proposed, where the relationship between the chattering amplitude, the switching frequency and the system perturbations is shown. The main contribution in this paper is the application of the S-AST controller to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THDi) of the PMSM currents. By comparing the S-AST control against PI control, the THDi is reduced from 9.9% to 1.27%, in simulation, and the THDi is reduced from 22.79% to 1.56%, experimentally. This work describes a frequency-dependent bearing voltage model for squirrel-cage induction motors. Previous research related to bearing voltages commonly considered the bearing voltage ratio (BVR) as a constant. However, it is important to analyze the frequency-dependent behavior of the BVR when dealing with systems excited by high-switching-frequency pulsewidth modulation voltages. First, we measure the BVR characteristic for a 1.5-kW test motor. The measurement data show that, in the mid-frequency range (100 kHz–6 MHz), the BVR values are smaller than the conventional low-frequency constant value, and at higher frequencies, the BVR value increases above the low-frequency value. Considering this BVR characteristic, an equivalent circuit has been built and analyzed from the perspective of the BVR. The proposed equivalent circuit has been verified by comparing simulation data with measurement data. Based on the analysis results of the equivalent circuit, a parametric study was done to examine the effects of motor system parameters on the bearing voltage. For the study, variations of the bearing voltage on the changes of the input voltage waveforms and the winding-to-stator capacitance are analyzed by using measurement and simulation data. AC motor drives fed from current-controlled power electronic converters are popular on account of their superior steady-state and transient performance. Hysteresis control is a popular current control technique, which needs modifications to compensate for its demerits. Appraisal of current error as a space phasor for implementing the hysteresis controller is one such modification. Current error space phasor (CESP)-based hysteresis controller for voltage source inverters-fed motor drives are capable of achieving superior dynamic performance. With the modified hysteresis current controller, the drive operates at a constant switching frequency and ensures an optimal switching vector selection. This article presents the analysis of CESP for a space vector-modulated indirect matrix converter (IMC). The modified algorithm for space vector modulation of IMC accommodates for the variations in dc-link voltage since CESP is input voltage dependent. The boundary for the hysteresis current controller is calculated from the computed values of CESP. The time-varying nature of the hysteresis boundary ensures a constant switching frequency operation for IMC. Thus, a CESP-based hysteresis controller is proposed for the vector control of the IMC-fed permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive. The bearing voltage brings premature failure of the motor bearings in the subway traction system, which is related to the stray capacitance of the motor. Therefore, the accurate calculation of stray capacitance parameters is of great significance for predicting bearing voltage. In previous studies, stray capacitances generally were acquired from simplified model of the motor. The effect of stator end‐winding and the bearing labyrinth seal on stray capacitance was usually ignored. In this study, the stray capacitance is analysed and the finite element calculation is carried out, and the improved finite element model of motor is proposed, which includes the end‐winding treatment and the bearing labyrinth seal. Then the feasibility of the improved model is verified by the measurement, and it is found that the accurate modelling of end windings has a great influence on the capacitance, and the bearing seal capacitance cannot be ignored while it is used in the motor. Finally, the influence of labyrinth seal parameters on the bearing voltage ratio of the motor is analysed, and it is concluded that the reduction of the radial gap width or the axial gap width of labyrinth seal can effectively reduce the risk of baring current. This article proposes and implements a novel wireless power and drive transfer system using orthogonal bipolar couplers and separately excited modulation (SEM). Specifically, two bipolar coils are orthogonally integrated and naturally decoupled to form a compact magnetic coupler which will be utilized in the transmitter and receiver, respectively. The key is to employ the SEM to alternatively energize bipolar coils in the transmitter while self-driven circuits in the receiver can directly extract the drive information to control receiver-side switches. Consequently, the concurrent wireless power transfer and wireless drive transfer can be skillfully realized via the shared transfer channel at the single resonant frequency. Moreover, the proposed system can effortlessly achieve the wireless dc motor drive with the capability of bidirectional motion, or the wireless ac motor drive with the variable-voltage variable-frequency control. Besides driving the dc and ac motors, a 200-W prototype is constructed with the transmission efficiency of 89.5% over the transfer distance of 100 mm for a resistive load of 40 Ω. This paper proposes an extended structure of a programmable low-pass filter (PLPF) for direct filtering of three-phase variables in automotive AC drives. The PLPF adjusts its cut-off frequency according to the synchronous frequency of the AC motors. Moreover, it compensates gain attenuation and phase delay of the fundamental component signal. The conventional PLPF can only be applied to variables in the stationary reference frame. In order to obtain filtered three-phase variables, an inverse reference frame transformation is required. However, the extended structure, which includes reference frame transformations, can be directly applied to three-phase variables and remove the noise in the earlier stage before transformation. The extended PLPF is more useful for making signal flows clear and intuitive when organizing an algorithm that directly requires three-phase variables. The extended PLPF requires a moderate computational load corresponding with that of the conventional PLPF because its formula is simplified by use of Kirchhoff's law. The reduction in the execution time is critical for implementing the filter based on low-cost microcontrollers. This article proposes and implements a brand-new wireless power and drive transfer (WPDT) system using wireless switches. A wireless piping network is conceived especially for pipeline transportations and in-pipe robots desiring wireless motor drive. Also, a multifrequency resonant network is newly explored to generate the variable-frequency-modulated magnetic fields where the wireless switches can extract the drive information directly. Differing from single-frequency T-circuits, this multifrequency network can offer different resonant frequencies which are not only coupling-independent but also large-scale load-independent. Importantly, it can realize both the power self-equalization and zero-phase-angle operation in transmitter and receiver circuits. To conduct the conceived WPDT, the magnetic resonant modulation is used to control the wireless switches automatically at the receiver side, thus flexibly enabling the bidirectional motions of dc motor and the variable-frequency speed control of ac induction motor. The experimental system efficiency can reach 83.5% based on a 200-W prototype at a 130-mm distance. Five-phase induction machines are attractive due to inherent benefits such as lower current rating than three-phase ones. On the other hand, ac motor drives often need to operate in the overmodulation (OVM) region, e.g., to increase the maximum speed or to work with reduced dc-link voltage. Most of the existing OVM strategies for five-phase drives are based on injecting low-order harmonics in the no-torque xy plane while avoiding low-order α−β harmonics (at least up to a modulation index of 1.2311 p.u.), so as to prevent the torque ripple associated with the α−β components. However, in practice the x−y impedance is very small, and hence, this approach can easily lead to overcurrent. This article proposes an OVM method for five-phase induction motors that adaptively modifies the injected components so that at each moment the addition of low-order x−y harmonics is favored over α−β ones but without surpassing the maximum current rms of the drive. In case the total stator copper loss (SCL) tends to exceed its rating during OVM in a given scenario, the proposed scheme automatically reduces the x−y injection to keep the SCL at its rated value.
