Let $n$ be a cubefree natural number and $p\geq 5$ be a prime number. Assume that $n$ is not expressible as a sum of the form $x^3+y^3$, where $x,y\in \mathbb{Q}$. In this note, we study the solutions (or lack thereof) to the equation $n=x^3+y^3$, where $x$ and $y$ belong to the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. As an application, consider the case when $n$ is not a sum of rational cubes. Many problems of arithmetic nature rely on the computation or analysis of values of $L$-functions attached to objects from geometry. Whilst basic analytic properties of the $L$-functions can be difficult to understand, recent research programs have shown that automorphic $L$-values are susceptible to study via algebraic methods linking them to Selmer groups. Iwasawa theory, pioneered first by Iwasawa in the 1960s and later Mazur and Wiles provides an algebraic recipe to obtain a $p$-adic analogue of the $L$-function. In this work we aim to adapt Iwasawa theory to a new context of representations of the unitary group GU(2,1) at primes inert in the respective imaginary quadratic field. This requires a novel approach using the Schneider--Venjakob regulator map, working over locally analytic distribution algebras. Subsequently, we show vanishing of some Bloch--Kato Selmer groups when a certain $p$-adic distribution is non-vanishing. These results verify cases of the Bloch--Kato conjecture for GU(2,1) at inert primes in rank 0.

Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension field of an algebraic number field $k$. Moreover, we take a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ over $k_\infty$. In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the pseudo-nullity of the $p$-ramified Iwasawa module for $p$-adic Lie extension of totally real fields. In this paper, we study the module-theoretic structure of classical Iwasawa modules. More precisely, for a finite abelian $p$-extension $K/k$ of totally real fields and the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_{\infty}/K$, we consider $X_{K_{\infty},S}={\rm Gal}(M_{K_{\infty},S}/K_{\infty})$ where $S$ is a finite set of places of $k$ containing all ramifying places in $K_{\infty}$ and archimedean places, and $M_{K_{\infty},S}$ is the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K_{\infty}$ unramified outside $S$. We give lower and upper bounds of the minimal numbers of generators and of relations of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module, using the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$. This result explains the complexity of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module when the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$ is large. Moreover, we prove an analogous theorem in the setting that $K/k$ is non-abelian. We also study the Iwasawa adjoint of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$, and the minus part of the unramified Iwasawa module for a CM-extension. In Iwasawa theory, the $\lambda$, $\mu$-invariants of various arithmetic modules are fundamental invariants that measure the size of the modules. Concerning the minus components of the unramified Iwasawa modules, Kida proved a formula that describes the behavior of those invariants with respect to field extensions. Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We study growth patterns associated with finitely ramified Galois groups considered over the various number fields varying in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower. These Galois groups can be considered as non-commutative analogues of ray class groups. For certain $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions in which a given prime above $p$ is completely split, we prove precise asymptotic lower bounds. Let $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ be an odd prime number at which $E$ has good ordinary reduction. Let $Sel_{p^\infty}(\mathbb{Q}_\infty, E)$ denote the $p$-primary Selmer group of $E$ considered over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. The (algebraic) \emph{$\mu$-invariant} of $Sel_{p^\infty}(\mathbb{Q}_\infty, E)$ is denoted $\mu_p(E)$. Denote by $\bar{\rho}_{E, p}:Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow GL_2(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ the Galois representation on the $p$-torsion subgroup of $E(\bar{\mathbb{Q}})$. Greenberg conjectured that if $\bar{\rho}_{E, p}$ is reducible, then there is a rational isogeny $E\rightarrow E'$ whose degree is a power of $p$, and such that $\mu_p(E')=0$. In this article, we study this conjecture by showing that it is satisfied provided some purely Galois theoretic conditions hold that are expressed in terms of the representation $\bar{\rho}_{E,p}$. In establishing our results, we leverage a theorem of Coates and Sujatha on the algebraic structure of the fine Selmer group. Furthermore, in the case when $\bar{\rho}_{E, p}$ is irreducible, we show that our hypotheses imply that $\mu_p(E)=0$ provided the classical Iwasawa $\mu$-invariant vanishes for the splitting field $\mathbb{Q}(E[p]):=\bar{\mathbb{Q}}^{ker\bar{\rho}_{E,p}}$., Comment: 23 pages, initial date of submission 28 May 2023

Given an odd prime number $p$ and an imaginary quadratic field $K$, we establish a relationship between the $p$-rank of the class group of $K$, and the classical $\lambda$-invariant of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Exploiting this relationship, we prove statistical results for the distribution of $\lambda$-invariants for imaginary quadratic fields ordered according to their discriminant. Some of our results are conditional since they rely on the original Cohen--Lenstra heuristics for the distribution of the $p$-parts of class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. This paper studies Iwasawa invariants in anti-cyclotomic towers. We do this by proposing two heuristics supported by computations. First we propose the Intersection Heuristics: these model `how often' the $p$-Hilbert class field of an imaginary quadratic field intersects the anti-cyclotomic tower and to what extent. Bleher et al. began studying higher codimension Iwasawa theory for classical Iwasawa modules. Subsequently, Lei and Palvannan studied an analogue for elliptic curves with supersingular reduction. In this paper, we obtain a vast generalization of the work of Lei and Palvannan. A key technique is an approach to the work of Bleher et al. that the author previously proposed. We compare the Iwasawa invariants of fine Selmer groups of $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible $p$-adic Lie extensions of a number field $K$ to the Iwasawa invariants of ideal class groups along these Lie extensions. More precisely, let $K$ be a number field, let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$, and choose a $G_K$-invariant lattice ${T \subseteq V}$. We study the fine Selmer groups of ${A = V/T}$ over suitable $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty/K$, comparing their corank and $\mu$-invariant to the corank and the $\mu$-invariant of the Iwasawa module of ideal class groups in $K_\infty/K$. In the second part of the article, we compare the Iwasawa $\mu$- and $l_0$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups of CM modular forms on the one hand and the Iwasawa invariants of ideal class groups on the other hand over trivialising multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$.

Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime, and $\mathfrak{p}$ a prime of $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ above $p$. Let $g_1$ and $g_2$ be $\mathfrak{p}$-ordinary, $\mathfrak{p}$-distinguished and $p$-stabilized cuspidal newforms of nebentype characters $\epsilon_1, \epsilon_2$ respectively, and weight $k\geq 2$, whose associated newforms have level prime to $p$. Assume that the residual representations at $\mathfrak{p}$ associated to $g_1$ and $g_2$ are absolutely irreducible and isomorphic. Then, the imprimitive $p$-adic L-functions associated with the symmetric square representations are shown to exhibit a congruence modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. Furthermore, the analytic and algebraic Iwasawa invariants associated to these representations of the $g_i$ are shown to be related. Along the way, we give a complete proof of the integrality of the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic L-function, normalized with Hida's canonical period. This fills a gap in the literature, since, despite the result being widely accepted, no complete proof seems to ever have been written down. On the algebraic side, we establish the corresponding congruence for Greenberg's Selmer groups, and verify that the Iwasawa main conjectures for the twisted symmetric square representations for $g_1$ and $g_2$ are compatible with the congruences., Comment: Accepted for publication in Research in the Mathematical Sciences

Let $K_\infty/K$ be a uniform $p$-adic Lie extension. We compare several arithmetic invariants of Iwasawa modules of ideal class groups on the one side and fine Selmer groups of abelian varieties on the other side. If $K_\infty$ contains sufficiently many $p$-power torsion points of $A$, then we can compare the ranks and the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of these modules over the Iwasawa algebra. In several special cases (e.g. multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions), we can also prove relations between suitable generalisations of the Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariant of the two types of Iwasawa modules. In the literature, different kinds of Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariants have been introduced for ideal class groups and Selmer groups. We define analogues of both concepts for fine Selmer groups and compare the resulting invariants. In order to obtain some of our main results, we prove new asymptotic formulas for the growth of ideal class groups and fine Selmer groups in multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions., Comment: 43 pages

We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $\pi$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $\mu$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations where the $\mu$-invariants are non-zero. In classical Iwasawa theory, we mainly study codimension one behavior of arithmetic modules. Relatively recently, F. M. Bleher, T. Chinburg, R. Greenberg, M. Kakde, G. Pappas, R. Sharifi, and M. J. Taylor started studying higher codimension behavior of unramified Iwasawa modules which are conjectured to be pseudo-null. In this paper, by developing a general algebraic theory on perfect complexes, we obtain a new perspective of their work. That allows us to extend the results to equivariant settings and, even in non-equivariant settings, to obtain more refined results concerning the higher codimension behavior., Comment: 31 pages. v2: exposition is improved

We discuss abelian equivariant Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ at good supersingular primes and non-anomalous good ordinary primes. Using Kobayashi's method, we construct equivariant Coleman maps, which send the Beilinson-Kato element to the equivariant $p$-adic $L$-functions. Then we propose equivariant main conjectures and, under certain assumptions, prove one divisibility via Euler system machinery. As an application, we prove a case of a conjecture of Mazur-Tate., Comment: 72 pages

We completely calculate the Fitting ideal of the classical $p$-ramified Iwasawa module for any abelian extension $K/k$ of totally real fields, using the shifted Fitting ideals recently developed by the second author. This generalizes former results by the first and third authors where we had to assume that only $p$-adic places may ramify in $K/k$. One of the important ingredients is the computation of some complexes in appropriate derived categories.

The notion of the truncated Euler characteristic for Iwasawa modules is an extension of the notion of the usual Euler characteristic to the case when the homology groups are not finite. This article explores congruence relations between the truncated Euler characteristics for dual Selmer groups of elliptic curves with isomorphic residual representations, over admissible $p$-adic Lie extensions. Let $\ell$ be a rational prime number and $K$ a number field. We prove that the logarithmic module $X_{d}$ attached to a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}^{d}$-extension $K_{d}$ of $K$ is a noetherian $\Lambda_{d}$-module. Moreover, under the Gross-Kuz'min conjecture we prove that it is also torsion. Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an algebraic number field $k$. We denote by $S$ a finite set of prime numbers which does not contain $p$, and $S(k_\infty)$ the set of primes of $k_\infty$ lying above $S$. In the present paper, we will study the structure of the Galois group $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ of the maximal pro-$p$ extension unramified outside $S (k_\infty)$ over $k_\infty$. For a prime number $p$ and a number field $k$, let $\tilde{k}$ be the compositum of all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. Greenberg's Generalized Conjecture (GGC) claims the pseudo-nullity of the unramified Iwasawa module $X(\tilde{k})$ of $\tilde{k}$. It is known that, when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic field, GGC has a consequence on the Iwasawa invariants associated to $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve---defined over a number field $K$---without complex multiplication and with good ordinary reduction at all the primes above a rational prime $p \geq 5$. We construct a pairing on the dual $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over any strongly admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $K_\infty/K$ under the assumption that it is a torsion module over the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group $G=\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. Under some mild additional hypotheses this gives an algebraic functional equation of the conjectured $p$-adic L-function. We produce generalizations of Iwasawa's `Riemann-Hurwitz' formula for number fields. These generalizations apply to cyclic extensions of number fields of degree p^n for any positive integer n. We first deduce some congruences and inequalities and then use these formulas to establish a vanishing criterion for Iwasawa \lambda-invariants which generalizes a result of Takashi Fukuda et. al. for totally real number fields., Comment: 13 pages

We prove a slight generalization of Iwasawa's `Riemann-Hurwitz' formula for number fields and use it to generalize Ferrero's and Kida's well-known computations of Iwasawa \lambda-invariants for the cyclotomic Z_2-extensions of imaginary quadratic number fields. In particular, we show that if p is a Fermat prime, then similar computations of Iwasawa \lambda-invariants hold for certain imaginary quadratic extensions of the unique subfield k of Q(\zeta_{p^2}) such that [k:Q] = p. In fact, we actually prove more by explicitly computing cohomology groups of principal ideals. The computation of lambda invariants obtained is a special case of a much more general result concerning relative lambda invariants for cyclotomic Z_2-extensions of CM number fields due to Yuji Kida. For a prime number p, we denote by K the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of a number field k. For a finite set S of prime numbers, we consider the S-ramified Iwasawa module which is the Galois group of the maximal abelian pro-p-extension of K unramified outside S. This paper treats the case where S does not contain p and k is the rational number field or an imaginary quadratic field. In this case, we prove the explicit formulae for the free ranks of the S-ramified Iwasawa modules as abelian pro-p groups, by using Brumer's p-adic version of Baker's theorem on the linear independence of logarithms of algebraic numbers.

We study the Selmer group of an elliptic curve over an admissible p-adic Lie extension of a number field F . We give a formula for the Akashi series attached to this module, in terms of the corresponding objects for the cyclotomic Zp-extension and certain correction terms. This extends our earlier work [arXiv:math/0404431], in particular since it applies to elliptic curves having split multiplicative reduction at some primes above p, in which case the Akashi series can have additional zeros., Comment: 13 pages

We study the variation of Mordell-Weil ranks in the Jacobians of curves in a pro-p tower over a fixed number field. In particular, we show that under mild conditions the Mordell-Weil rank of a Jacobian in the tower is bounded above by a constant multiple of its dimension. In the case of the tower of Fermat curves, we show that the constant can be taken arbitrarily close to 1. The main result is used in the forthcoming paper of Guillermo Mantilla-Soler on the Mordell-Weil rank of the modular Jacobian J(Np^m)., Comment: 8 pages

We study the torsion subgroup of the universal ordinary distribution related to a general number field. We describe a way to control this subgroup. We apply this method to the special case of an imaginary quadratic field, and we give examples of such fields where these torsion subgroups are non-trivial.

We give a necessary and sufficient "Galois descent" condition to the freeness of the Iwasawa module built from Sinnott's circular units. Then we describe explicit examples for which this condition is not fulfilled.

Iwasawa's classical asymptotical formula relates the orders of the $p$-parts $X_n$ of the ideal class groups along a $\ZM_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ of a number field $F$, to Iwasawa structural invariants $\la$ and $\mu$ attached to the inverse limit $X_\infty=\limpro X_n$. It relies on "good" descent properties satisfied by $X_n$. If $F$ is abelian and $F_\infty$ is cyclotomic it is known that the $p$-parts of the orders of the global units modulo circular units $U_n/C_n$ are asymptotically equivalent to the $p$-parts of the ideal class numbers. This suggests that these quotients $U_n/C_n$, so to speak unit class groups, satisfy also good descent properties. We show this directly, i.e. without using Iwasawa's Main Conjecture.

We establish formulae for the Iwasawa invariants of Mazur--Tate elements of cuspidal eigenforms, generalizing known results in weight 2. Our first theorem deals with forms of "medium" weight, and our second deals with forms of small slope . We give examples illustrating the strange behavior which can occur in the high weight, high slope case.

Recently Ritter and Weiss introduced an equivariant "main conjecture" than generalizes and refines the Main Conjecture of Iwasawa theory. In this paper, we show that, for the prime 2 and a dihedral extension of order 8 over Q, this conjecture is equivalent to a congruence condition on the coefficients of a power series with 2-adic integral coefficients constructed using the 2-adic L-series associated to the extension. We then verify that this congruence condition holds for the first coefficients in a large number of examples.
