Colorectal cancer (CRC) cells display remarkable adaptability, orchestrating metabolic changes that confer growth advantages, pro-tumor microenvironment, and therapeutic resistance. One such metabolic change occurs in glutamine metabolism. Colorectal tumors with high glutaminase (GLS) expression exhibited reduced T cell infiltration and cytotoxicity, leading to poor clinical outcomes. However, depletion of GLS in CRC cells has minimal effect on tumor growth in immunocompromised mice. By contrast, remarkable inhibition of tumor growth is observed in immunocompetent mice when GLS is knocked down. It is found that GLS knockdown in CRC cells enhanced the cytotoxicity of tumor-specific T cells. Furthermore, the single-cell flux estimation analysis (scFEA) of glutamine metabolism revealed that glutamate-to-glutathione (Glu-GSH) flux, downstream of GLS, rather than Glu-to-2-oxoglutarate flux plays a key role in regulating the immune response of CRC cells in the tumor. Mechanistically, inhibition of the Glu-GSH flux activated reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related signaling pathways in tumor cells, thereby increasing the tumor immunogenicity by promoting the activity of the immunoproteasome. The combinatorial therapy of Glu-GSH flux inhibitor and anti-PD-1 antibody exhibited a superior tumor growth inhibitory effect compared to either monotherapy. The broken time reversal symmetry states may result in the opening of a band gap in TlBiSe2 leading to several interesting phenomena which are potentially relevant for spintronic applications. In this work, the quantum interference and magnetic proximity effects have been studied in Ni80Fe20/p-TlBiSe2/p-Si (Magnetic/TI) heterostructure using physical vapor deposition technique. Raman analysis shows the symmetry breaking with the appearance of A21u mode. The electrical characteristics are investigated under dark and illumination conditions in the absence as well as in the presence of a magnetic field. The outcomes of the examined device reveal excellent photo response in both forward and reverse bias regions. Interestingly, under a magnetic field, the device shows a reduction in electrical conductivity at ambient conditions due to the crossover of weak localization and separation of weak antilocalization, which are experimentally confirmed by magnetoresistance measurement. Further, the photo response has also been assessed by the transient absorption spectroscopy through analysis of charge transfer and carrier relaxation mechanisms. Our results can be beneficial for quantum computation and further study of topological insulator/ferromagnet heterostructure and topological material based spintronic devices due to high spin orbit coupling along with dissipationless conduction channels at the surface states. The crystal family of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO 4 ) is a promising material group for applications in quantum and nonlinear optics. The fabrication of low-loss optical waveguides, as well as high-grade periodically poled ferroelectric domain structures, requires a profound understanding of the material properties and crystal structure. In this regard, Raman spectroscopy offers the possibility to study and visualize domain structures, strain, defects, and the local stoichiometry, which are all factors impacting device performance. However, the accurate interpretation of Raman spectra and their changes with respect to extrinsic and intrinsic defects requires a thorough assignment of the Raman modes to their respective crystal features, which to date is only partly conducted based on phenomenological modelling. To address this issue, we calculated the phonon spectra of potassium titanyl phosphate and the related compounds rubidium titanyl phosphate (RbTiOPO 4 ) and potassium titanyl arsenate (KTiOAsO 4 ) based on density functional theory and compared them with experimental data. Overall, this allows us to assign various spectral features to eigenmodes of lattice substructures with improved detail compared to previous assignments. Nevertheless, the analysis also shows that not all features of the spectra can unambigiously be explained yet. A possible explanation might be that defects or long range fields not included in the modeling play a crucial rule for the resulting Raman spectrum. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of height profiles, along the chains of Si atoms on the terrace edges of a perfectly ordered Si(553)-Au surface, reveal an STM bias-dependent mixed periodicity with periods of one, two and one and a half lattice constants. The simple linear chain model usually observed with STM cannot explain the unexpected fractional periodicity in the height profile. It was found that the edge Si chain stands for, in fact, a zigzag structure, which is composed of two neighboring rows of Si atoms and was detected in the STM experiments. Tight-binding calculations of the local density of states and charge occupancy along the chain explain the voltage-dependent modulations of the STM profiles and show that oscillation periods are determined mainly by the surface and STM tip Fermi energies. The article focuses on the incidental laboratory exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei in Arizona highlighting the increased risk for laboratory staff due to the rising cases of melioidosis and the discovery of B. pseudomallei reservoirs in the Gulf Coast Region. Topics include the misidentification of B. pseudomallei in nonendemic areas, the description of the laboratory exposure incident, and the evaluation and management of staff exposed to the bacterium.

Surface atomic arrangement and physical properties of aluminum ultrathin layers on c-Si(111)-7 × 7 and hydrogen-terminated c-Si(111)-1 × 1 surfaces deposited using molecular beam epitaxy were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra were collected in two configurations (take-off angle of 0° and 45°) to precisely determine the surface species. Moreover, 3D atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the air-exposed samples were acquired to investigate the clustering formations in film structure. The deposition of the Al layers was monitored in situ using a reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) experiments to confirm the surface crystalline structure of the c-Si(111). The analysis of the RHEED patterns during the growth process suggests the settlement of aluminum atoms in Al(111)-1 × 1 clustered formations on both types of surfaces. The surface electrical conductivity in both configurations was tested against atmospheric oxidation. Active optical control over matter is desirable in many scientific disciplines, with prominent examples in all-optical magnetic switching 1,2 , light-induced metastable or exotic phases of solids 3-8 and the coherent control of chemical reactions 9,10 . Typically, these approaches dynamically steer a system towards states or reaction products far from equilibrium. In solids, metal-to-insulator transitions are an important target for optical manipulation, offering ultrafast changes of the electronic 4 and lattice 11-16 properties. The impact of coherences on the efficiencies and thresholds of such transitions, however, remains a largely open subject. Here, we demonstrate coherent control over a metal-insulator structural phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional solid-state surface system. A femtosecond double-pulse excitation scheme 17-20 is used to switch the system from the insulating to a metastable metallic state, and the corresponding structural changes are monitored by ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction 21,22 . To govern the transition, we harness vibrational coherence in key structural modes connecting both phases, and observe delay-dependent oscillations in the double-pulse switching efficiency. Mode-selective coherent control of solids and surfaces could open new routes to switching chemical and physical functionalities, enabled by metastable and non-equilibrium states.

The microstructural and textural evolution of 60% cold-rolling-deformation Er metal (purity ≥ 99.7%) during annealing were investigated by electron-backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The research results showed that the texture of the (0001) plane orientation was strengthened, but there was no apparent enhancement of the (01 1 ¯ 0) and ( 1 ¯ 2 1 ¯ 0) plane orientations with increasing the annealing temperature. The recrystallization frequency and grain sizes gradually stabilized after the annealing duration of more than 1 h at 740 °C; the annealing duration and the recrystallization frequency were fitted to the equation: y = 1   −   exp   (− 0 . 3269 x 0. 2506 ) . HAGBs were predominant, and the distribution of grain sizes was the most uniform after annealing at 740 °C × 1 h, which was the optimal annealing process of the Er metal with 60% cold-rolling deformation. However, the recrystallization was transferred to the substructure due to grain boundary migration and twining under an excessive annealing temperature and duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, a new photovoltaic device was prepared. The device uses titanium (Ti) foil/TiO2 nanotubes as the photoanode and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a photosensitizer. Titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTs) were prepared by one-step anodic oxidation. Cut-MWCNTs with a length of less than 100 nm were obtained by the mixed-acid oxidation of MWCNTs. The two materials were combined to form a TiO2-NTs@cut-MWCNT heterostructure by electrophoresis. TiO2-NTs@cut-MWCNTs were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which showed that the two materials were effectively combined. We fabricated the heterostructure into a photovoltaic device, showing an enhanced photocurrent response and an efficiency of 0.0138%, and explained this phenomenon by performing UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical tests. Raman Spectroscopy is a well-known method for identifying molecules by their spectroscopic "fingerprint". In Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS), the presence of nanometallic surfaces in contact with the molecules enormously enhances the spectroscopic signal. Raman enhancing surfaces are often fabricated lithographically or chemically, but the throughput is low and the equipment is expensive. In this work a SERS layer was formed by the self-assembly of silver nanospheres from a hexane suspension onto an imprinted thermoplastic sheet (PET). In addition, the SERS layer was transferred and securely bonded to other surfaces. This is an important attribute for probes into solid specimen. Raman spectra were obtained with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) solution concentrations ranging from 1 mm to 1 nm. The methods described here produced robust and sensitive SERS surfaces with inexpensive equipment, readily available materials, and with no chemical or lithographic steps. Topics include the identification of event-associated case-patients, the relationship between sexual activity at the event and transmission, and the importance of completing vaccination before attending large events.

In the U.S., approximately half of maids and housekeeping cleaners are Latino or Hispanic, while the vast majority are women (88.3%). This largely immigrant, underserved workforce faces complex factors, which may contribute to adverse health outcomes. To understand relevant barriers and challenges, this mixed-methods study explored the environmental health needs of a heterogeneous group of Latinas in New Jersey (NJ) who clean occupationally, and consisted of 3 focus groups (N = 15) with a cross-sectional survey (N = 9), both conducted in Spanish. Participants were recruited from community-based English as a Second Language classes in Hackensack, NJ. Analysis of focus group audio recordings included descriptive and in vivo coding followed by inductive coding to explore thematic analysis. The survey responses were evaluated using descriptive statistics. As per the survey results, the environmental health needs of this population include sore muscles, back problems, asthma, other respiratory issues, migraine or headache, and skin issues (rash, etc.). In the group discussions, the roles of genetics, food, and chemical exposures in cancer etiology were of great interest and a variety of opinions on the topic were explored. Both the focus group discussions and survey responses suggested that this population also faces barriers including lack of training, chemical exposures and inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). These barriers are compounded by daily environmental exposures from personal home cleaning practices. The development of culturally- and linguistically-appropriate interventions are warranted to better protect the health of essential occupational cleaners who keep homes, businesses and schools clean. In the Jewish Antiquities (I, 1, 3), when paraphrasing the passage of Genesis 2, 10-15, Flavius Josephus notes that the four rivers springing in paradise are the Phison (Φεισὼν), which passes through India and is called Ganges by the Greeks, the Euphrates and Tigris, which flow into the Red Sea, and finally the Geon, which crosses Egypt and is called the Nile by the Greeks. Starting from Josephus' comments, this research focuses on the various interpretations of the Genesis passage, and in particular on the references to the Phison in the writings of the hellenised Jewish and Christian authors. The contents of these texts show common traits with Greco-Roman sources that describe India as a utopian space outside of history. Therefore, the analysis of the documents reveals how a sequence of texts developed over the centuries, starting from a utopian image of India and reaching a definition of a land close to paradise. A deep look at the Book of Ruth reveals a two-dimensional model that reflects two alternative realities of gender. One perception strives to manage the world and resolve its problems. It is an orientation based on justice, rules, and individualistic logic, and even a certain degree of manipulation. The other exists within human reality and is based on concern for others, sensitivity, and mutual responsibility. Although these perceptions are obviously not necessarily representative of different genders, they are often associated as such and can be referred to as masculine and feminine, respectively. This paper demonstrates how the story of Ruth in its entirety revolves around the tension between these two perceptions, until they ultimately merge into one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the tumor microenvironment, T cells, B cells, and many other cells play important and distinct roles in anti‐tumor immunotherapy. Although the immune checkpoint blockade and adoptive cell transfer can elicit durable clinical responses, only a few patients benefit from these therapies. Increased understanding of tumor‐infiltrating immune cells can provide novel therapies and drugs that induce a highly specific anti‐tumor immune response to certain groups of patients. Herein, the recent research progress on tumor‐infiltrating B cells and T cells, including CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, and exhausted T cells and their role in anti‐tumor immunity, is summarized.
