Sarcoidosis is a multisystem chronic inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that has the potential to involve every tissue in the body. Sarcoidosis in the gastrointestinal system, and particularly the colon, is very rare. Here, we report the case of a 57-year-old man with no previous diagnosis of sarcoidosis who presented with new onset of abdominal pain and constipation. A colonoscopy revealed that the abdominal pain was caused by an obstructing lesion in the cecum-ascending colon and lacked a clear histologic diagnosis. Radiologic investigation revealed concentric wall thickening of the cecum-ascending colon with multiple satellite lymphadenopathies, highly suggestive of a malignancy. The patient underwent a laparotomy and a right hemicolectomy was performed. A diagnosis of colonic sarcoidosis was made after the resected specimen was examined. Additionally, a chest computed tomography scan revealed lung involvement with atypical radiologic features in the absence of respiratory symptoms. Only histologic examination of the surgical specimen can yield a diagnosis of gastrointestinal sarcoidosis due to the non-specificity of endoscopic and radiologic findings.

Circadian rhythms play a crucial role in regulating behavior, physiology, and health. Sexual dimorphism, a widespread phenomenon across species, influences circadian behaviors. Additionally, post-mating physiological changes in females are known to modulate various behaviors, yet their effects on circadian rhythms remain underexplored. Here, using Drosophila melanogaster , a powerful model for studying circadian mechanisms, we systematically assessed the impact of sex and mating status on circadian behavior. We measured circadian period length and rhythm strength in virgin and mated males and females, including females mated to males lacking Sex Peptide (SP), a key mediator of post-mating changes. Across four wild-type and control strains, we found that males consistently exhibited shorter circadian periods than females, regardless of mating status, suggesting that circadian period length is a robust sexually dimorphic trait. In contrast, rhythm strength was influenced by the interaction between sex and mating status, with female mating generally reducing rhythm strength in the presence of SP signaling. Notably, genetic background significantly modulated these effects on rhythm strength. Our findings demonstrate that while circadian period length is a stable sex-specific trait, rhythm strength is shaped by a complex interplay between sex, mating status, and genetic background. This study advances our understanding of how sex and mating influence circadian rhythms in Drosophila and provides a foundation for future research into sexually dimorphic mechanisms underlying human diseases associated with circadian disruptions. We have previously demonstrated that the intracellular, non-GPI anchored CD59 isoforms IRIS-1 and IRIS-2 (Isoforms Rescuing Insulin Secretion 1 and 2) are necessary for insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. While investigating their expression across human tissues, we identified IRIS-1 and IRIS-2 mRNA in the human brain, though their protein expression and function remained unclear. This study shows the presence of both IRIS-1 and 2 proteins in the human brain, specifically in neurons and astrocytes. In the neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y), both isoforms are intracellular, and their expression increases upon differentiation into mature neurons. Silencing IRIS-1 and 2 in SH-SY5Y cells reduces the SNARE complex formation, essential for synaptic vesicle exocytosis, leading to a reduction in noradrenaline secretion. Notably, we observed diminished expression of neuronal IRIS-1 and 2 in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and non-demented individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In SH-SY5Y cells, knockdown of all isoforms of CD59 including IRIS-1 and 2 not only elevates phosphorylated tau but also increases cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) expression, known promoter of hyperphosphorylation and accumulation of tau, a key pathological feature of AD. Additionally, we found that prolonged exposure to high glucose or cytokines markedly reduces the expression of IRIS-1 and 2 in SH-SY5Y cells, suggesting a link between AD pathology and metabolic stress through modulation of these isoforms. Significance statement: The study reveals the existence of intracellular, non-GPI anchored CD59 isoforms IRIS-1 and IRIS-2 in neurons and astrocytes within the human brain. It also demonstrates decreased expression of IRIS-1 and 2 in neurons of individuals with AD and T2D, pointing to a link between aberrant expression of IRIS isoforms and deficiencies in neurotransmitter release in patients with AD. Identifying specific IRIS-1 and IRIS-2 binding partners within the neurons and the exact mechanism leading to its reduced expression in AD could provide new therapeutic targets to delay the symptomatic progression of Alzheimer's disease. The rhomboid intercostal block and the rhomboid intercostal subserratus block are novel blocks. These provide effective postoperative analgesia for a myriad of indications. It surpasses previous blocks by being away from the surgical site which soothes any fear of the surgeon – a possibility of infection at the site and also difficulty of postoperative catheter maintenance. The landmarks of this block are very lucid and understood easily. It is relatively a very safe block with rib acting as a safe barrier as well as a landmark. The catheter of the site does not interfere with patients' routine activity, thus increasing overall patient satisfaction. The authors discuss five cases in which RISS proved immensely effective in relieving pain from rib fractures and postoperative. Furthermore, details of the block including anatomical site, dermatomal coverage, and USG images are discussed. It has proved to be a boon for all patients offering an excellent analgesia. Rhomboid intercostal subserratus plane block is an excellent option for providing adequate postoperative analgesia for thoracoabdominal surgeries as well as patients with multiple rib fractures. Background: Albania is undergoing a demographic, epidemiological, and nutrition transition leading to an increased prevalence of overweight and obesity among new generations. Comprehensive studies on the nutritional status and dietary patterns of youths in the country are still lacking. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of students (10–18 years) attending secondary schools in rural and semi-urban areas (October–November 2024). Information collected included socio-demographic data, anthropometric measurements (weight, height), and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) (KIDMED). Factors influencing dietary patterns were investigated, with a multivariate logistic regression performed to identify key drivers for poor MD adherence (AOR 95% CI). Results: In total, 426 children (47.2% females) were interviewed. Over 20% of the sample was overweight or obese, with the prevalence of these diseases decreasing with age regardless of gender. The KIDMED score highlighted suboptimal MD adherence (4.6 ± 2.5 SD), with significant differences between females and males (4.1 ± 2.4 SD vs. 5.1 ± 2.4 SD, p < 0.001), especially in rural areas (3.9 ± 2.4 SD vs. 4.9 ± 2.5 SD, p = 0.003). Dietary quality tended to decline with age. Female gender was the strongest predictor of poor MD adherence (AOR 2.08 CI: 1.34–3.22; p = 0.001). Conclusions: The MD is a cornerstone for ensuring the Albanian population's long-term health and well-being. This study holds significant public health relevance in a country with high mortality rates due to cardiovascular diseases. Future nutrition interventions focused on the poor MD adherence of new generations should take into consideration geographic, cultural, and social dimensions, including gender equality. (1) Background: Exposure to blood carries the risk of transmission of many infectious diseases. Healthcare workers (HCWs), including hospital-based medical students, face high and often under-reported rates of exposure to needlestick and sharps injuries. Previous studies have shown that students' knowledge of infection control varies, highlighting the importance of pre-placement training. This study aims to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding these risks in a population of medical students from Albania. (2) Methods: A validated questionnaire was administered to 134 medical students in an Italian hospital in May 2023. It assessed HBV vaccination status, adherence to infection control practices, knowledge of pathogen transmission, exposure incidents and attitudes towards infected patients. Three additional questions addressed air-borne transmission of tuberculosis and vaccination recommendations for healthcare workers. (3) Results: Most students (64%) reported being aware of occupational exposure risks. While 93% and 87%, respectively, recognised HIV and HBV as blood-borne pathogens, fewer recognised Treponema pallidum (44%). Awareness of post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV was high (85%), but although 75% reported having received training, only 45% felt it was adequate. Statistical analysis revealed an association between knowledge of infection control, awareness of pathogen transmission and understanding of the importance of vaccination. (4) Conclusions: Our study highlights gaps in medical students' knowledge of occupational infections and highlights the need for improved pre-clerkship education. Adipokines related to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are an emerging area of interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between GDM and adipokine levels in human milk. This was an observational cohort study targeting mothers with gestational diabetes, which evaluated the association of maternal hyperglycemia severity, classified as GDM-G1 (diet treatment) and GDM-G2 (insulin treatment), with colostral adipokines involved in pro- and anti-inflammatory processes. Colostrum was collected from hyperglycemic (N = 34) and normoglycemic (N = 26) mothers, and adipokine levels were determined by immunoenzymatic assay. Among anti-inflammatory adipokines, only for irisin and vaspin, but not for obestatin and adropin, were significantly different levels noted between the GDM-G1, GDM-G2 and non-GDM cohorts. Colostrum of the GDM-G2 subgroup contained more vaspin (4.77 ng/mL) than that of normoglycemic mothers (3.12 ng/mL) and more irisin (26.95 μg/mL) than in the GDM-G1 subgroup (17.59 μg/mL). The levels of pro-inflammatory adipokines, namely, dermcidin, chemerin and visfatin, were at similar levels irrespective of maternal glycemia. Moreover, irisin showed a negative correlation with dermcidin in GDM-G2 and non-GDM cohorts. Associations were observed between colostral irisin and maternal preconception BMI, dermcidin and gestational age, and vaspin and maternal age. This study provides evidence that the way of restoring glucose homeostasis in pregnant women has an impact on the anti-inflammatory adipokines irisin and vaspin, but not on obestatin and adropin. Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disorder characterized by the presence of intraepidermal blisters and erosions, primarily affecting the mucosa and/or skin. There are no established Indian guidelines for the management of pemphigus, and Western guidelines cannot be directly applied due to differences in clinicodemographic profiles, comorbidities, and resource limitations. These guidelines aim to provide Indian dermatologists with evidence-based and consensus-driven recommendations for the management of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceous (PF), taking into account the unique challenges posed by the Indian healthcare setting. The guidelines focus on the comprehensive management of PV and PF, addressing diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and follow-up. It is intended for dermatologists working in both outpatient and inpatient settings across India. The first draft of the guidelines was prepared by the writing group and then reviewed by 19 national experts in pemphigus management, including inputs from allied specialties. Areas with limited evidence or anticipated variation in recommendations were subjected to rounds of voting, with responses categorized as "strongly agree," "agree," "neutral," "disagree," or "strongly disagree." Suggestions were incorporated, and statements were revised until a mean agreement score of 4 or higher was reached across 16 key areas after four voting rounds. These guidelines offer a structured approach to managing pemphigus in India, addressing the need for region-specific recommendations that account for unique challenges such as resource constraints and specific comorbidities in Indian patients. Electroosmosis and surcharge preloading represent two effective soil consolidation methodologies. Their combined application has been proven to be effective in shortening the consolidation period and mitigating the degradation of electroosmotic consolidation performance due to crack generation. In this study, an axisymmetric free-strain consolidation analytical model incorporating a continuous drainage top boundary was established. A semi-analytical solution was then derived utilizing Laplace–Hankel transform and boundary condition homogenization. The validity of the proposed solution was confirmed by comparing it with three cases documented in the existing literature. Additionally, a comparison with indoor model box test results demonstrated the rationality of setting the top boundary as a continuous drainage boundary. Parameter analysis revealed several key insights: firstly, under the free strain assumption, the spatiotemporal distribution of excess pore water pressure aptly captured the coupled effects of the radial electric field. Secondly, the combination of electro-osmosis and preloading technology significantly improved consolidation efficiency, with this effect becoming more pronounced as the applied voltage increased. Lastly, the general solution based on the continuous drainage boundary proved to be suitable for addressing the consolidation of soft soils enhanced by vertical drainage, applicable to real foundation consolidation problems with top boundaries exhibiting different permeabilities. The fibronectin domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5), or irisin, is an adipo-myokine hormone produced during exercise, which shows therapeutic potential for conditions like metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review explores its potential across various pathophysiological processes that are often considered independent. Elevated in healthy states but reduced in diseases, irisin improves muscle–adipose communication, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic balance by enhancing mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress. It promotes osteogenesis and mitigates bone loss in osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Irisin exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB signaling and countering insulin resistance. In the brain, it reduces amyloid-β toxicity, inflammation, and oxidative stress, enhancing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling, which improves cognition and synaptic health in AD models. It also regulates dopamine pathways, potentially alleviating neuropsychiatric symptoms like depression and apathy. By linking physical activity to systemic health, irisin emphasizes its role in the muscle–bone–brain axis. In India, there is an urgent need to meet the food production due to the country's rapidly expanding population. There is a downturn in the farming sector and the farmers are shifting to other firms due to insufficient output in the sector. Furthermore, traditional agricultural practices followed in India are insufficient to meet the increasing food demand. The costs and operational times generally increase as the majority of agricultural activities depend significantly on human labor. The increasing prevalence of machinery on farms is not a substitute for the necessity for human labor completely. This highlights the critical importance of agricultural automation. This study highlights the significant impact of UAVs on precision and smart agriculture through automation. The implementation of drones in diverse agricultural tasks has the potential to reduce labor demands and streamline operational efficiency. This review offers a comprehensive overview of conceptual design, command flow operation, micro-controller boards, remote-control systems, and attachments such as sensors, cameras, and motors in UAVs, aimed at automating agricultural activities. The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), alongside artificial intelligence and machine learning, enhances accuracy and precision in agricultural operations. Context: The correlation between neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disorders has been extensively documented. Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream have been demonstrated to impair memory function and heighten susceptibility to neurodegenerative disorders. Furthermore, elevated quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body, known as oxidative stress, exacerbate neurodegenerative illnesses and negatively affect learning and memory. Neuroprotection prevents neuronal cell death by intervening and blocking the pathogenetic process that leads to cellular malfunction and death. Methods: We evaluated several studies in the WEB of SCIENCE, SCOPUS, and PubMed. Furthermore, we identified the central genes and signaling pathways associated with neurogenesis, the neural system, and neuroplasticity through data mining, a literature review of artificial intelligence, and an in-silico study. Results: Physical exercise (PE) benefits various physiological systems, including the central nervous system. The beneficial impacts of physical activity on cognitive performance, neural well-being, and safeguarding neurons against different brain injuries are extensively documented. Furthermore, research has demonstrated that PE is a powerful non-pharmacological intervention that enhances cognitive function, including learning and memory, while decreasing the likelihood of developing neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, engaging in moderate physical activity that does not result in extreme fatigue has a beneficial impact on reducing inflammation and promoting antioxidant effects. According to the hormesis theory, physical inactivity and extreme overtraining can decrease physiological function. Conclusions: In summary, a combination of moderate aerobic exercise, HIIT, and resistance training, performed at appropriate intensities, is most beneficial for neuroprotection and cognitive health. The application of HBIM for the information management of historical buildings is often hindered by the presence of uncertainty due to limited geometric information and documentation at the time of modelling; controlling and organising this level of uncertainty, in view of future developments, becomes paramount. This paper presents an HBIM workflow to tackle uncertainty by capitalising on parametric modelling and 4D modelling. Parametric modelling is used as a dynamic tool that allows for an easy and quick update of the model when new data become available, while 4D modelling is used for disassembling the building backwards, establishing temporal relationships among building elements and organising them in successive phases, when uncertainty concerns the historical development of building elements and architectural interventions. The workflow was applied to a building of industrial archaeology in southern Italy, the ‘De Simone’ factory, which is abandoned and in a poor state of conservation, but represents a valuable historical testimony due to its rich stratification resulting from significant physical and functional transformations over time. This application shows that structuring the data implementation process to accommodate the available information and its future integration, through the use of parametric and 4D modelling, can be very efficient to support documentation, conservation and enhancement activities on built heritage. Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors (PBRs) has emerged as a promising and sustainable approach to address various environmental and energy challenges, offering a multitude of benefits across diverse applications. Recent developments in microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors have contributed substantially to the development and optimization of sustainable bioprocesses. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent innovations and breakthroughs in the field of microalgae cultivation, with a specific focus on their application in photobioreactors, aimed at paving the way for a greener future. This study in-depth examines the advantages of microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors, concentrating on its effectiveness in wastewater treatment, CO2 bioremediation, and the production of biofuels and high-value products. The review evaluates the effects of light, solar irradiation, temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in culture media, CO2 concentrations, and pH on microalgae growth performance, including specific growth and biomass productivity. The study also examines open systems like unstirred ponds, raceway ponds, and circular ponds and closed systems like horizontal tubular, vertical bubble-column, airlift, flat panel, and plastic-bag photobioreactors, comparing their pros and cons. To optimize microalgae cultivation, key factors in photobioreactor design, including photosynthetic effi- ciencies, light/dark (L/D) cycles, CO2 concentrations, mass transfer, hydrodynamics behavior, and pH, are extensively investigated. In addition, the review outlines recent developments in large-scale photobioreactors and highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with photobioreactor scale-up and design parameter optimization, including genetic engineering and economic feasibility. Background: Wildfire frequency, magnitude and impacts in wildland–urban interface (WUI) areas are increasing in the Mediterranean Basin. Aims: We investigated the role played by socio-economic, vegetation, climatic, and zootechnical drivers on WUI wildfire patterns (area burned and wildfire ignitions) in Sardinia, Italy. Methods: We defined WUI as the 100-m buffer area of the anthropic layers. We created a comprehensive and multi-year dataset of explanatory variables and wildfires, and then trained a set of models and evaluated their performances in predicting WUI fires. We used the best models to assess the single variable's importance and map wildfire patterns. Key results: Random Forest and Support Vector Machine were the best performing models. In broad terms, wildfire patterns at WUI were influenced by socio-economic factors and herbaceous vegetation types. Conclusions: Machine learning models can be useful tools to predict wildfire ignitions and area burned at WUI in Mediterranean areas. Implications: Improved knowledge of the main drivers of wildfires at WUI in fire-prone Mediterranean areas can foster the development or optimisation of wildfire risk reduction and prevention strategies. We modelled wildfire activity in wildland–urban interface areas of Sardinia, Italy by applying a set of predictive models to investigate how climatic, vegetation, zootechnical, and socio-economic drivers influence wildfire ignitions and area burned. The accurate prediction of mine water inflow is very important for mine design and safe production. The existing forecasting methods based on single factors are often less accurate and stable. Multi-factor data-driven models play a key role in predicting water inflow without taking physical changes into account. Therefore, a multi-factor prediction method based on an improved SSA-RG-MHA model is introduced in this study. The model uses two sets of data related to water inflow as the input to improve prediction accuracy and stability. The model first applies a residual network (ResNet) to mitigate the problems of disappearing gradients and explosions. Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) are then used to learn the characteristics of long-term sequence data. The model combines ResNet and GRU into a new network architecture and incorporates a multiple attention (MHA) mechanism to focus on information at different time scales. Finally, the optimized sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is used to optimize the network parameters to improve the global search ability and avoid local optimization. The mine water inflow is affected by many factors, among which the water level and microseismic energy data are particularly important. Therefore, these data types are selected as the key variables of mine water inflow prediction. The experimental results show that the improved SSA-RG-MHA model significantly reduces the prediction error: the mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were reduced to 4.42 m3/h, 7.17 m3/h, and 5%, respectively. The multi-factor water inflow prediction method is more stable and reliable than single-factor models as it comprehensively considers the factors affecting the water inflow of the working face. Compared with other multi-factor models, this model exhibits higher prediction accuracy and robustness, providing a basis for mine water hazard monitoring and early warning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide. Common comorbidities related to obesity, significantly polygenic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and heart conditions affect social and monetary systems. Over the past decade, research in drug discovery and development has opened new paths for alternative and conventional medicine. With a deeper comprehension of its underlying mechanisms, obesity is now recognized more as a chronic condition rather than merely a result of lifestyle choices. Nonetheless, addressing it solely through lifestyle changes is challenging due to the intricate nature of energy regulation dysfunction. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved six medications for the management of overweight and obesity. Seaweed are plants and algae that grow in oceans, rivers, and lakes. Studies have shown that seaweed has therapeutic potential in the management of body weight and obesity. Seaweed compounds such as carotenoids, xanthophyll, astaxanthin, fucoidans, and fucoxanthin have been demonstrated as potential bioactive components in the treatment of obesity. The abundance of natural seaweed bioactive compounds has been explored for their therapeutic potential for treating obesity worldwide. In electric powertrain traction applications, the adopted trend to improve the performance and efficiency of electromechanical power conversion systems is to increase supply voltages and inverter switching frequencies. As a result, electrical machine conductors are subjected to ever-increasing electrical stresses, leading to premature insulation degradation and eventual short-circuits. Winding condition monitoring is crucial to prevent such critical failures. Based on the scientific literature, several methods can be used for early identification of aging. A first solution is to monitor partial discharges. This method requires the use of a specific measurement device and an undisturbed test environment. A second solution is to monitor the inter-turn winding capacitance, which is directly related to the condition of the insulation and can cause a change in the stator impedance behavior. Several approaches can be used to estimate or characterize this impedance behavior. They must be performed on a machine at standstill, which limits their application. In this paper, a new characterization method is proposed to monitor the high-frequency stator impedance evolution of voltage source inverter-fed machines. This method can be applied at any time without removing the machine from its operating environment. The range and accuracy of the proposed frequency characterization depend in particular on the supply voltage level and the bandwidth of the measurement probes. The effects of parameters such as temperature, switching frequency, and DC voltage amplitude on the impedance characteristic were also studied and will be presented. Tests carried out on an automotive traction machine have shown that the first two series and parallel resonances of the high-frequency impedance can be accurately identified using the proposed technique. Background: The decision to initiate advanced systemics in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) is complex. Objectives: To explore disease burden and clinical characteristics of patients with moderate-to-severe AD and identify characteristics associated with initiating new systemics. Methods: Data from prospective, longitudinal, non-interventional CorEvitas AD Registry were evaluated. Differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidities, disease severity (vIGA-AD™; body surface area (BSA); Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI); SCORing AD [SCORAD]), and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were assessed between systemic and non-systemic therapy groups. Results: Of 883 patients, 673 were newly prescribed systemics and 210 were not. Non-systemic therapy group had higher than expected rates of severe disease at enrollment based on vIGA-AD = 4 (39%), mean BSA involvement (31%), and mean EASI (19). PROs for non-systemic therapy group indicated elevated burden from AD on quality of life and poor disease control. SCORAD, peak pruritus in the past 24 h, history of biologics, and facial pallor, were significantly associated with initiation of systemics at enrollment. Conclusion: While disease burden likely influences the initiation of systemic therapy, many patients with significant burden are not treated with systemics for unclear reasons. This study aimed to enhance the accuracy of forest fire susceptibility mapping (FSM) by innovatively applying recursive feature elimination (RFE) with an ensemble of machine learning models, specifically Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF), to identify key fire factors. The fire zones were derived from MODIS satellite imagery from 2012 to 2017. Further validation of these data has been provided by field surveys and reviews of land records in rangelands and forests; a total of 326 fire points were determined in this study. Seventeen factors involving topography, geomorphology, meteorology, hydrology, and human factors were identified as being effective primary factors in triggering and spreading fires in the selected mountainous case study area. As a first step, the RFE models RF, Extra Trees, Gradient Boosting, and AdaBoost were used to identify important fire factors among all selected primary factors. The SVM and RF models were applied once on all factors and secondly on those derived from the RFE model as the key factors in FSM. Training and testing data were divided tenfold, and the model's performance was evaluated using cross-validation. Various metrics, including recall, precision, F1 score, accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC), and Kappa, were employed to measure the performance of the models. The assessments demonstrate that leveraging RFE models enhances the FSM results by identifying key factors and excluding unnecessary ones. Notably, the SVM model exhibits significant improvement, achieving an increase of over 10.97% in accuracy and 8.61% in AUC metrics. The animal and plant biodiversity of the Italian territory is known to be one of the richest in the Mediterranean basin and Europe as a whole, but does the genetic diversity of extant human populations show a comparable pattern? According to a number of studies, the genetic structure of Italian populations retains the signatures of complex peopling processes which took place from the Paleolithic to modern era. Although the observed patterns highlight a remarkable degree of genetic heterogeneity, they do not, however, take into account an important source of variation. In fact, Italy is home to numerous ethnolinguistic minorities which have yet to be studied systematically. Due to their difference in geographical origin and demographic history, such groups not only signal the cultural and social diversity of our country, but they are also potential contributors to its bio-anthropological heterogeneity. To fill this gap, research groups from four Italian Universities (Bologna, Cagliari, Pisa and Roma Sapienza) started a collaborative study in 2007, which was funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and received partial support by the Istituto Italiano di Antropologia. In this paper, we present an account of the results obtained in the course of this initiative. Four case-studies relative to linguistic minorities from the Eastern Alps, Sardinia, Apennines and Southern Italy are first described and discussed, focusing on their micro-evolutionary and anthropological implications. Thereafter, we present the results of a systematic analysis of the relations between linguistic, geographic and genetic isolation. Integrating the data obtained in the course of the long-term study with literature and unpublished results on Italian populations, we show that a combination of linguistic and geographic factors is probably responsible for the presence of the most robust signatures of genetic isolation. Finally, we evaluate the magnitude of the diversity of Italian populations in the European context. The human genetic diversity of our country was found to be greater than observed throughout the continent at short (0-200 km) and intermediate (700-800km) distances, and accounted for most of the highest values of genetic distances observed at all geographic ranges. Interestingly, an important contribution to this pattern comes from the "linguistic islands"( e.g. German speaking groups of Sappada and Luserna from the Eastern Italian Alps), further proof of the importance of considering social and cultural factors when studying human genetic variation.

Aims/hypothesis: The mechanisms of the protective effects of exendin-4 on NEFA-induced beta cell apoptosis were investigated., Methods: The effects of exendin-4 and palmitate were evaluated in human and murine islets, rat insulin-secreting INS-1E cells and murine glucagon-secreting alpha-TC1-6 cells. mRNA and protein expression/phosphorylation were measured by real-time RT-PCR and immunoblotting or immunofluorescence, respectively. Small interfering (si)RNAs for Ib1 and Gpr40 were used. Cell apoptosis was quantified by two independent assays. Insulin release was assessed with an insulin ELISA., Results: Exposure of human and murine primary islets and INS-1E cells, but not alpha-TC1-6 cells, to exendin-4 inhibited phosphorylation of the stress kinases, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and prevented apoptosis in response to palmitate. Exendin-4 increased the protein content of islet-brain 1 (IB1), an endogenous JNK blocker; however, siRNA-mediated reduction of IB1 did not impair the ability of exendin-4 to inhibit JNK and prevent apoptosis. Exendin-4 reduced G-protein-coupled receptor 40 (GPR40) expression and inhibited palmitate-induced phosphorylation of mitogen-activated kinase kinase (MKK)4 and MKK7. The effects of exendin-4 were abrogated in the presence of the protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitors, H89 and KT5720. Knockdown of GPR40, as well as use of a specific GPR40 antagonist, resulted in diminished palmitate-induced JNK and p38 MAPK phosphorylation and apoptosis. Furthermore, inhibition of JNK and p38 MAPK activity prevented palmitate-induced apoptosis., Conclusions/interpretation: Exendin-4 counteracts the proapoptotic effects of palmitate in beta cells by reducing GPR40 expression and inhibiting MKK7- and MKK4-dependent phosphorylation of the stress kinases, JNK and p38 MAPK, in a PKA-dependent manner.

The activation of nuclear factor (NF)κB pathway and its transducing signaling cascade has been associated with the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases. The central role that IκBα and p65 phosphorylation play in regulating NFκB signalling in response to inflammatory stimuli made these proteins attractive targets for therapeutic strategies. Although several chemical classes of NFκB inhibitors have been identified, it is only for a few of those that a safety assessment based on a comprehensive understanding of their pharmacologic mechanism of action has been reported. Here, we describe the specific anti-inflammatory effect of bindarit, an indazolic derivative that has been proven to have anti-inflammatory activity in a variety of models of inflammatory diseases (including lupus nephritis, arthritis and pancreatitis). The therapeutic effects of bindarit have been associated with its ability to selectively interfere with monocyte recruitment and the "early inflammatory response," although its specific molecular mechanisms have remained ill-defined. For this purpose, we investigated the effect of bindarit on the LPS-induced production of inflammatory cytokines (MCP-1 and MCPs, IL-12β/p40, IL-6 and IL-8/KC) in both a mouse leukaemic monocyte-macrophage cell line and bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDM). Bindarit inhibits the LPS-induced MCP-1 and IL-12β/p40 expression without affecting other analyzed cytokines. The effect of bindarit is mediated by the downregulation of the classical NFκB pathway, involving a reduction of IκBα and p65 phosphorylation, a reduced activation of NFκB dimers and a subsequently reduced nuclear translocation and DNA binding. Bindarit showed a specific inhibitory effect on the p65 and p65/p50 induced MCP-1 promoter activation, with no effect on other tested activated promoters. We conclude that bindarit acts on a specific subpopulation of NFκB isoforms and selects its targets wihtin the whole NFκB inflammatory pathway. These findings pave the way for future applications of bindarit as modulator of the inflammatory response.

Objective: We have previously demonstrated that bindarit, a selective inhibitor of monocyte chemotactic proteins (MCPs), is effective in reducing neointimal formation in rodent models of vascular injury by reducing smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration and neointimal macrophage content, effects associated with the inhibition of MCP-1/CCL2 production. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of bindarit on in-stent stenosis in the preclinical porcine coronary stent model., Methods and Results: One or 2 bare metal stents (Multi-Link Vision, 3.5 mm) were deployed (1:1.2 oversize ratio) in the coronary arteries of 42 pigs (20 bindarit versus 22 controls). Bindarit (50 mg/kg per day) was administered orally from 2 days before stenting until the time of euthanasia at 7 and 28 days. Bindarit caused a significant reduction in neointimal area (39.4%, P<0.001, n=9 group), neointimal thickness (51%, P<0.001), stenosis area (37%, P<0.001), and inflammatory score (40%, P<0.001) compared with control animals, whereas there was no significant difference in the injury score between the 2 groups. Moreover, treatment with bindarit significantly reduced the number of proliferating cells (by 45%, P<0.05; n=6 group) and monocyte/macrophage content (by 55%, P<0.01; n=5-6 group) in stented arteries at day 7 and 28, respectively. These effects were associated with a significant (P<0.05) reduction of MCP-1 plasma levels at day 28. In vitro data showed that bindarit (10-300 μmol/L) reduced tumor necrosis factor-α (50 ng/mL)-induced pig coronary artery smooth muscle cell proliferation and inhibited MCP-1 production., Conclusion: Our results show the efficacy of bindarit in the prevention of porcine in-stent stenosis and support further investigation for clinical application of this compound.

Introduction: Acute thromboembolic occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery is a condition with an unfavorable prognosis. Treatment of this condition is focused on early diagnosis, surgical or intravascular restoration of blood flow to the ischemic intestine, surgical resection of the necrotic bowel and supportive intensive care. In this report, we describe a case of a 39-year-old woman who developed a small bowel infarct because of an acute thrombotic occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery, also involving the splenic artery., Case Presentation: A 39-year-old Caucasian woman presented with acute abdominal pain and signs of intestinal occlusion. The patient was given an abdominal computed tomography scan and ultrasonography in association with Doppler ultrasonography, highlighting a thrombosis of the celiac trunk, of the superior mesenteric artery, and of the splenic artery. She immediately underwent an explorative laparotomy, and revascularization was performed by thromboendarterectomy with a Fogarty catheter. In the following postoperative days, she was given a scheduled second and third look, evidencing necrotic jejunal and ileal handles. During all the surgical procedures, we performed intraoperative Doppler ultrasound of the superior mesenteric artery and celiac trunk to control the arterial flow without evidence of a new thrombosis., Conclusion: Acute mesenteric ischemia is a rare abdominal emergency that is characterized by a high mortality rate. Generally, acute mesenteric ischemia is due to an impaired blood supply to the intestine caused by thromboembolic phenomena. These phenomena may be associated with a variety of congenital prothrombotic disorders. A prompt diagnosis is a prerequisite for successful treatment. The treatment of choice remains laparotomy and thromboendarterectomy, although some prefer an endovascular approach. A second-look laparotomy could be required to evaluate viable intestinal handles. Some authors support a laparoscopic second-look. The possibility of evaluating the arteriotomy, during a repeated laparotomy with a Doppler ultrasound, is crucial to show a new thrombosis. Although the prognosis of acute mesenteric ischemia due to an acute arterial mesenteric thrombosis remains poor, a prompt diagnosis, aggressive surgical treatment and supportive intensive care unit could improve the outcome for patients with this condition.

The Tuareg of the Fezzan region (Libya) are characterized by an extremely high frequency (61%) of haplogroup H1, a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup that is common in all Western European populations. To define how and when H1 spread from Europe to North Africa up to the Central Sahara, in Fezzan, we investigated the complete mitochondrial genomes of eleven Libyan Tuareg belonging to H1. Coalescence time estimates suggest an arrival of the European H1 mtDNAs at about 8,000-9,000 years ago, while phylogenetic analyses reveal three novel H1 branches, termed H1v, H1w and H1x, which appear to be specific for North African populations, but whose frequencies can be extremely different even in relatively close Tuareg villages. Overall, these findings support the scenario of an arrival of haplogroup H1 in North Africa from Iberia at the beginning of the Holocene, as a consequence of the improvement in climate conditions after the Younger Dryas cold snap, followed by in situ formation of local H1 sub-haplogroups. This process of autochthonous differentiation continues in the Libyan Tuareg who, probably due to isolation and recent founder events, are characterized by village-specific maternal mtDNA lineages.

The Tuaregs are a semi-nomadic pastoralist people of northwest Africa. Their origins are still a matter of debate due to the scarcity of genetic and historical data. Here we report the first data on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic characterization of a Tuareg sample from Fezzan (Libyan Sahara). A total of 129 individuals from two villages in the Acacus region were genetically analysed. Both the hypervariable regions and the coding region of mtDNA were investigated. Phylogeographic investigation was carried out in order to reconstruct human migratory shifts in central Sahara, and to shed light on the origin of the Libyan Tuaregs. Our results clearly show low genetic diversity in the sample, possibly due to genetic drift and founder effect associated with the separation of Libyan Tuaregs from an ancestral population. Furthermore, the maternal genetic pool of the Libyan Tuaregs is characterized by a major "European" component shared with the Berbers that could be traced to the Iberian Peninsula, as well as a minor 'south Saharan' contribution possibly linked to both Eastern African and Near Eastern populations.

The construction of high rockfill dams on deep overburden in seismically active regions poses significant challenges. Currently, there are no standardized guidelines for defining the computational domain range in seismic analysis, necessitating the establishment of a universally applicable computational domain range that optimizes the balance between computational accuracy and efficiency. This has critical engineering implications for the seismic analysis of rockfill dams on deep overburden. This study employed the seismic wave input method to consider the dynamic interaction between the dam, overburden, and infinite domain. A systematic investigation was conducted on a concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) constructed on deep overburden, considering the influences of overburden thickness, dam height, overburden properties, soil layer configuration, ground motion intensity, and the frequency content of the seismic waves. The acceleration response and seismic deformation of the dam were analyzed. Subsequently, the computational domain range corresponding to various levels of acceptable engineering precision was established. The results indicated that the lateral boundary length should extend a minimum distance equal to the sum of 3 times the overburden depth and 1.2 times the maximum dam height. Additionally, the depth below the overburden–bedrock interface should extend at least 1.2 times the maximum dam height. This study provides a crucial foundation for determining the optimal computational domain range in the seismic analysis of rockfill dams constructed on deep overburden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a system for identifying dog emotions based on dogs' facial expressions and body posture. Towards that goal, we built a dataset with 2184 images of ten popular dog breeds, grouped into seven similarly sized primal mammalian emotion categories defined by neuroscientist and psychobiologist Jaak Panksepp as 'Exploring', 'Sadness', 'Playing', 'Rage', 'Fear', 'Affectionate' and 'Lust'. We modified the contrastive learning framework MoCo (Momentum Contrast for Unsupervised Visual Representation Learning) to train it on our original dataset and achieved an accuracy of 43.2% and a baseline of 14%. We also trained this model on a second publicly available dataset that resulted in an accuracy of 48.46% but had a baseline of 25%. We compared our unsupervised approach with a supervised model based on a ResNet50 architecture. To effectively manage the sustainable urban development of cities, it is crucial to quickly understand the geological and geotechnical attributes of the underground. Carrying out such studies entails significant investments and focused reconnaissance efforts, which might not align seamlessly with large-scale territorial planning initiatives within a city accommodating more than 3 million inhabitants, like Casablanca in Morocco. Additionally, various specific investigations have been conducted by municipal authorities in recent times. The primary aim of this study is to furnish city managers and planners with a tool for informed decision-making, enabling them to explore the geological and geotechnical properties of soil foundations using Geographic Information Systems (GISs) and geostatistics. This database, initially intended for utilization by developers and construction engineers, stands to economize a substantial amount of time and resources. During the urban planning of cities and prior to determining land usage (five- or seven-floor structures), comprehending the mechanical traits (bearing capacity, water levels, etc.) of the soil is crucial. To this end, geological and geotechnical maps, along with a collection of 100 surveys, were gathered and incorporated into a GIS system. These diverse data sources converged to reveal that the underlying composition of the surveyed area comprises silts, calcarenites, marls, graywackes, and siltstones. These formations are attributed to the Middle Cambrian and the Holocene epochs. The resultant geotechnical findings were integrated into the GIS and subjected to interpolation using ordinary kriging. This procedure yielded two distinct maps: one illustrating bearing capacity and the other depicting the substratum. The bearing capacity of the soil in the study zone is rated as moderate, fluctuating between two and four bars. The depth of the foundation remains relatively shallow, ranging from 0.8 m to 4.5 m. The outcomes are highly promising, affirming that the soil in Casablanca boasts commendable geotechnical attributes capable of enduring substantial loads and stresses. Consequently, redirecting future urban planning in the region toward vertical expansion seems judicious, safeguarding Casablanca's remaining green spaces and the small agricultural belt. The results of this work help to better plan the urban development of the city of Casablanca in a smarter way, thus preserving space, agriculture, and the environment while promoting sustainability. Background/Objectives: Weaning failure in elderly patients undergoing mechanical ventilation presents a complex clinical challenge due to age-related physiological changes and comorbidities. Understanding the dynamics of this phenomenon through systematic analysis can provide valuable insights for clinical management. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the factors contributing to weaning failure in elderly patients and to assess the efficacy of different strategies in mitigating this challenge. Design: The design of this study is a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies focusing on weaning failure in elderly patients. Studies reporting outcomes related to mechanical ventilation weaning failure were included. Data extraction, quality assessment, and statistical analysis were performed following established guidelines. Results: A total of 15 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The average age of participants throughout the studies was 66.24 ± 10.21 years. This suggests that the study population largely consisted of older adults and displayed a moderate range of ages centered around the mean. The rate of weaning failure across these studies was slightly above 31.56%, indicating a significant occurrence of this complication in the patient cohorts. The analysis revealed age-related physiological changes, such as decreased respiratory muscle strength and increased chest wall stiffness, as significant contributors to weaning failure in elderly patients. Comorbidities, including chronic pulmonary diseases and cardiovascular conditions, further exacerbated the challenge. Various interventions, including tailored weaning protocols and respiratory therapies, showed promising results in improving weaning outcomes in this population. Conclusions: Weaning failure in elderly patients undergoing mechanical ventilation is influenced by a combination of age-related physiological changes and comorbidities. Tailored interventions addressing these factors are essential for optimizing weaning success rates in this vulnerable population. The formation mechanism of glacial debris flows in alpine gorge mountain areas is complex, with varying characteristics across different regions. Due to the influence of mountain shadows and the accumulation and ablation of ice and snow, accurately identifying and rapidly extracting glacial debris flows using optical images remains challenging. This study utilizes the Random Forest method to develop a multi-feature spatiotemporal information extraction model based on Landsat-8 images and a glacial debris flow gully identification model. These models were applied to the Songzong–Tongmai section of the Sichuan–Tibet Highway to identify glacial debris flows. The results showed that (1) the multi-feature spatiotemporal extraction model effectively eliminated the interference of mountain shadows and ice–snow phase changes, resulting in a higher accuracy for identifying and extracting glacial debris flows in areas with significant information loss due to deep shadows. The total accuracy was 93.6%, which was 8.9% and 4.2% higher than that of the Neural Network and Support Vector Machine methods, respectively. (2) The accuracy of the glacial debris flow gully identification model achieved 92.6%. The proposed method can accurately and rapidly identify glacial debris flows in alpine gorge mountain areas, facilitating remote sensing dynamic monitoring. This approach reduces the damage caused by debris flows to both transportation and the environment, ensuring the safe passage of highways and promoting the sustainable development of the region. Background/Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a type 2 inflammatory disease often resistant to standard treatments. Dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the IL-4α receptor, has shown efficacy in CRSwNP, but a significant subset of patients do not respond to this therapy. This study aims to investigate pretreatment complete blood count (CBC)-based inflammatory biomarkers as predictors of response to dupilumab in patients with CRSwNP. Methods: This mono-centric, retrospective, single-arm longitudinal cohort study included 80 patients with uncontrolled CRSwNP who received dupilumab treatment at the Medical University of Graz. Patients were classified into responder and non-responder groups based on a reduction of >1 in nasal polyp score (NPS) and a sinonasal outcome test-22 (SNOT-22) score <40 points at six months. Pretreatment CBC-derived biomarkers, including eosinophil count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic inflammation indices including the aggregate inflammation systemic index (AISI), systemic inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), were analyzed for their predictive value. Results: Of the 80 patients, 72.5% were classified as responders, while 27.5% were non-responders. A significant positive correlation was found between baseline eosinophil count and NPS reduction (p = 0.027), suggesting that higher eosinophil levels may predict higher NPS reduction in dupilumab treatment. However, no significant associations were observed between NLR, PLR, and systemic inflammation indices with treatment outcomes. Conclusions: Pretreatment eosinophil count may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting nasal polyp reduction in dupilumab treatment of CRSwNP. Other CBC-based inflammatory markers did not show significant predictive value. Background/Objectives: Oleuropein, a secoiridoid polyphenol found in olive oil as well as the fruit and leaves of the olive tree, has been reported to have antioxidant, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic properties. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (TD2M) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by impaired insulin action, termed insulin resistance. The development of T2DM is closely associated with obesity and chronic low-grade inflammation. In recent years, a rise in sedentary lifestyles and diets rich in refined carbohydrates and saturated fats has contributed to an increase in the prevalence of obesity and TD2M. Currently, the strategies for treating T2DM and its prevention lack efficacy and are associated with adverse side effects. Hence, there is an urgent need for novel treatment strategies, including naturally occurring compounds possessing hypoglycemic and insulin-sensitizing properties. Methods: This review summarizes the evidence of the anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties of oleuropein from in vitro and in vivo animal studies, as well as the available clinical trials. Results: The existing evidence indicates that oleuropein may exert its anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in hepatic and adipose tissue. Additionally, the evidence suggests that oleuropein targets skeletal muscle and enhances glucose uptake and its related protein signalling cascades, improving glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Conclusions: Despite the evidence of oleuropein's anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potential, more animal and clinical studies are needed to proceed towards its clinical/therapeutic use for metabolic diseases confidently. The objective of this opinion was to determine if any wild caught fish species, originating from specific fishing grounds and consumed in the EU/EFTA could be considered free of zoonotic parasites. In this Opinion the term 'fishery products' only refers to fresh finfish. As there are multiple fish species and numerous potential parasites, Anisakis sp. was used as an indicator of zoonotic parasites in marine areas. This parasite species is particularly suited as it is common in marine environments, capable of infecting multiple fish species and is the subject of the majority of published studies. On the rare occasion where Anisakis sp. data were not available, or all tests were negative, other parasites such as Contracaecum osculatum (s.l.) and/or Phocanema spp. were considered. In freshwater systems, all zoonotic parasites were investigated. Consumption, import and landing data were used to determine the most relevant fish species and, where possible, the source fishing areas were identified. The most commonly consumed wild caught fish species in the EU/EFTA include tuna, cod, Alaskan pollock, hake, herring, sardines, mackerel, trout and saithe. Although the majority of these fish are caught in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (37) as well as several areas in the Indian Ocean, imported fish may originate from any global fishing areas, with the exception of Antarctica. Based on the data, at least one zoonotic parasite has been reported in at least one fish species in each of the FAO marine fishing areas. Thus, due to relative low fish host specificity of the zoonotic parasites, the panel concluded that all wild caught fish species may be exposed to and infected with zoonotic parasites. Background: This study analyzed weaning characteristics and assessed the association of clinical and ultrasonographic indices—maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), peak flow expiratory (PFE), diaphragm-thickening fraction (DTF), diaphragm thickness (DT), diaphragm excursion (DE), diaphragm-RSBI (D-RSBI), and lung ultrasound (LUS) patterns—with weaning failure. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included critically ill COVID-19 patients aged 18 and older who had been on invasive mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h and undergoing weaning. Exclusion criteria included absence of ultrasound assessments, neuromuscular diseases, and chronic cardio-respiratory dysfunction. Results: Among 61 patients, 44.3% experienced weaning failure, 27.9% failed the spontaneous breathing trial (SBT), 16.4% were re-intubated within 48 h, and 28% required tracheostomy. Weaning failure was associated with prolonged ventilation (29 vs. 7 days, p < 0.001), extended oxygen therapy, longer ICU stays, and higher ICU mortality. These patients had higher pressure support, lower oxygenation levels, a higher RSBI, and a lower MIP. While PEF, DTF, DE, and D-RSBI showed no significant differences, both right and left diaphragm thicknesses and the inspiratory thickness of the left diaphragm were reduced in failure cases. LUS scores were significantly higher before and after SBT in the failure group. Bivariate analysis identified RSBI [OR = 1.04 (95% CI = 1.01–1.07), p = 0.010], MIP [OR = 0.92 (95% CI = 0.86–0.99), p = 0.018], and LUS [OR = 1.15 (95% CI = 0.98–1.35), p = 0.025] as predictors of weaning failure; however, these associations were not confirmed in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Ultrasound provides supplementary information during weaning, but no definitive association between ultrasound indices and weaning failure was confirmed in this study. Background: Recent studies have unveiled the intricate and distinctive nature of fascia, no longer regarding it solely as a muscle container. Recent research highlights its complex innervation and structure, signifying its significance in chronic pain pathways. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search (updated on February 2024) to evaluate the role of fascial plane blocks in chronic pain treatment. All article types (randomized clinical trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies along with case reports and case series) were deemed eligible for inclusion if they referenced "fascial plane blocks" for the control of chronic pain conditions (persistent post-surgical, neuropathic, musculoskeletal-myofascial and cancer-related) and were published between 2010 and February 2024. Results: The search revealed an increasing evidence in the literature for the implementation of fascial blocks in chronic pain management, although still heavily limited to case reports or series. Conclusion: With the integration of ultrasound technology and a deeper understanding of their mechanisms of action, the fascial plane blocks continue to broaden their application also in chronic pain management, as a part of a multimodal strategy or as an alternative to conventional drugs or opioids.
