Soil texture affects rice nutrient uptake and yield formation by influencing soil structure, microbial activity, and soil nutrient supply capacity. Analyzing the relationship between soil texture, nutrient content, and rice agronomic traits is of great significance for precise and efficient fertilizer application. The tillage layer (0–20 cm) of 31 paddy fields in China's main rice-producing areas was collected to perform rice pot experiments, and soil texture characteristics, physicochemical properties, microbial-related indicators, and rice agronomic traits were measured and analyzed. The results showed that these soils could be classified into four types of soil texture: loamy sandy soil, sandy loam soil, silty loam soil, and silty soil. Analysis of variance showed that the available nitrogen (AN), available potassium (AK), and available phosphorus (AP) contents were the highest in silty loam, silty, and sandy loam soils, respectively, and silt loamy soil had the highest CEC. Principal component analysis (PCA) also showed that soil physicochemical properties can be distinguished to a certain extent according to soil texture types. For the relationship of soil texture parameters and soil physicochemical properties, soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), AN, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and microbial carbon (MBC) contents were positively correlated with soil clay content, AK was positively correlated with silt content, and soil phosphorus status was significantly related to pH. Mantel's test revealed significant correlations between rice N, P, and K nutrient status, dry matter accumulation, and yield, and soil available nutrient content, MBC, pH, and soil texture parameters. Structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that sand affected soil available nutrients by regulating pH, while clay can positively influence soil available nutrients by affecting soil organic matter mineralization and microbial activity, thus influencing nutrient absorption and yield formation in rice. Overall, in rice production, the silty and silty loam paddy soil with fine texture and higher clay content facilitates the mineralization of soil organic matter and the activity of soil microbes, resulting in more available soil nutrients, which benefits the rice absorption and accumulation of nutrients. Vegetation restoration in dryland regions may be a powerful way to control desertification and promote local habitat recovery. In these artificial revegetation systems, ecosystem processes and functioning are strongly determined by nitrogen (N) availability, while soil inorganic N (SIN) is the major available N form and is absorbed as a main N source for plants. However, SIN dynamics, their influencing factors, and their relative importance to the ecosystem of these N‐limited systems are not well understood. A field investigation was conducted to examine the monthly variations in SIN and its response to planting age and vegetation type in a typical artificial sand‐fixing system in northwestern China. The SIN content in topsoil (0–20 cm) during the growing season ranged from 7.10 to 95.65 mg kg−1, with a mean value of 27.14 mg kg−1. Soil nitrate N had a dominant role in determining SIN monthly dynamics, which showed a fluctuating trend with two peak values in early July and late August. SIN showed a significant increasing trend with the planting age of sand‐fixing vegetation, and it was highest for Nitraria sphaerocarpa (55.66 ± 5.76 mg kg−1), followed by Haloxylon ammodendron (29.81 ± 3.47 mg kg−1) and interspace (11.39 ± 1.13 mg kg−1). SIN displayed a hump‐shaped relationship with air temperature (R2 = 0.96, p < 0.01) and had a maximum at 19.88°C. The change rate of SIN was positively correlated with accumulated precipitation (R2 = 0.99, p < 0.05). SIN was correlated significantly with soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and soil clay content. Our results revealed that climatic (air temperature and precipitation), abiotic (soil texture), plant (planting age and vegetation type), and nutrient‐related (SOC and TN) factors regulate SIN dynamics in artificial sand‐fixing vegetation systems. Climate was the predominant factor affecting soil ammonium N, and soil nutrients (SOC and TN) were the predominant factor affecting soil nitrate N. Natural source zone depletion (NSZD) is the main process of LNAPL (Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) removal under natural conditions. The NSZD rates assessed ranged from 0.55 to 11.55 kg·m−2·a−1 (kilograms per square meter per year) in previous studies. However, most of these data were obtained from sandy sites, with few clayey sites. To gain knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil sites, the study assessed the NSZD of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated clayey soil site in China, combining the concentration gradient method with metagenomic sequencing technology. The results show that the abundance of methane-producing key enzyme mcrA gene in the source zone was more abundant than in background areas, which suggests that there was methanogenesis, the key process of NSZD. The concentration gradients of oxygen and carbon dioxide existed only in shallow soil (<0.7 m), which suggests that there was a thin methane oxidation zone in the shallow zone. The calculated NSZD rates range from 0.23 to 1.15 kg·m−2·a−1, which fall within the moderate range compared to previous NSZD sites. This study expands the knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil and enriches the attenuation rate data for contaminated sites, which is of significant importance in managing petroleum contaminants. Water-level fluctuation (WLF) can destroy soil aggregates and induce soil organic carbon (SOC) loss, potentially triggering impacts on the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. However, responses of soil aggregate content and aggregate-associated organic carbon to WLF have not been well studied, especially in the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Therefore, samples from different elevations (145 m, 155 m and 165 m) in the WLFZ of the TGR were collected for experiments. The wet sieving method was used to divide soil into silt and clay (<0.053 mm), micro-aggregate (0.053–0.25 mm) and macro-aggregate (>0.25 mm). The K2Cr2O7-H2SO4 oxidation method was used to measure total SOC content in different soil aggregates. A modified Walkley and Black method was used to measure labile carbon in different soil aggregates. Results showed that macro-aggregate content substantially decreased, while micro-aggregate content remained stable and silt and clay fraction accumulated with a decrease in water-level elevations. Moreover, total SOC content and labile carbon in macro-aggregate were obviously higher than those in the micro-aggregate and the silt and clay fraction. Macro-aggregate contributed the most to SOC sequestration, while micro-aggregate contributed the least, and the contribution of macro-aggregate increased with a decrease in water-level elevations. We concluded that the macro-aggregate was the most active participant in the SOC sequestration process, and preferentially increasing the macro-aggregate content of the lowest water-level elevation was conducive to an improvement in soil carbon sequestration potential and would mitigate climate change. Soil salinization affects more than 25% of land globally. Subsurface pipe drainage is known for its effectiveness in improving saline–alkali land. The red clay layer (RCL) hinders soil improvement in the Hetao Irrigation District of Inner Mongolia, China. The soil water and salt migration rules at different buried depths and RCL were studied based on the field subsurface pipe drainage test and simulation using the DRAINMOD-S model (Version 6.1). The following implications can be drawn from the results: (1) Although the RCL affected the accuracy of the model, the calibrated statistical results met the application requirements, and the DRAINMOD-S model can be used to analyze subsurface pipe drainage under different distribution conditions of the RCL. (2) The RCL can reduce the drainage efficiency of the subsurface pipe, specifically when the distribution is shallow. (3) The soil desalting rate increased with an increase in the buried depth of the subsurface pipe. The desalination effect of shallow soil was better than that of deep soil. The RCL reduced the drainage and salt removal efficiency of the subsurface pipe. Burying the subsurface pipe as far above the RCL as possible should be considered. Soil erosion and surface pollution near reservoirs can adversely affect water quality and safety. Soil aggregate stability is an important predictor of soil water loss and erosion resistance that is strongly influenced by land use. This study therefore aimed to identify factors affecting soil aggregate stability near reservoirs to provide empirical and theoretical insights that could guide the development of management measures to increase land quality, optimize land use, and maximize sustainability. This study focuses on the land around the Shitoukoumen Reservoir in China and examines the effects of six land use types, eleven soil physicochemical properties, and five environmental factors. Ninety-four sets of soil samples were collected in 2021 for analysis of soil aggregates and properties. Particle size classification of soil aggregates was carried out using the wet sieve method and four indicators were calculated to evaluate the effects of land use, soil physicochemical properties, and environmental factors on soil aggregate stability: water stable aggregates (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), geometric mean diameter (GMD), and fractal dimension (D). Descriptive statistics and geostatistics were used to explore the spatial distributions of soil aggregate stability around the reservoir and the influence of soil properties was studied using correlation analysis and path analysis. The conclusion indicates that land use type significantly affects aggregate stability. The most stable aggregates were found in paddy fields (WSA = 0.77, MWD = 0.76, GMD = 0.57) and forests (WSA = 0.75, MWD = 0.76, GMD = 0.55), followed by an orchard, irrigated land, and grassland. Aggregate stability was worst in upland sites (WSA = 0.61, D = 2.28), where soil aggregates were highly fragmented. There were clear spatial correlations between all four stability indicators. The environmental factors and soil physicochemical characteristics with the strongest influence on aggregate stability were soil organic matter, pH, soil clay content, total nitrogen, and temperature changes. Path analysis revealed that some soil properties affect aggregate stability indirectly, with particularly complex relationships between clay, soil organic matter, and pH. In conclusion, land use type, soil organic matter, pH, soil clay content, total nitrogen, these soil physicochemical properties, and environmental factors, especially temperature, significantly affect soil aggregate stability around reservoirs. Although a number of studies have provided information on soil texture, soil classification, and depth to bedrock throughout China, few studies have combined this information, which is the basis for agricultural field management. A total of 81% of China's cultivated lands are distributed among the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain (18.2%), arid and semiarid North China Plain (18.2%), Northeast Plain (17%), Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (16.1%), and Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau (11.6%). The Huang-Huai-Hai Plain has the highest density of agricultural land (58.5%) and the greatest depth to bedrock of cultivated land (243–402 m). The lowest cultivated depth to bedrock (4–84 m) is concentrated in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding regions. The main cultivated soil types are Anthrosols, Fluvisols, Cambisols, Phaeozems, Luvisols, Kastanozems, Leptosols, and Acrisols, under the main topsoil texture classes of loam, clay loam, silty clay loam, silt loam, sandy loam, and clay. The Fluvisols had the largest depth to bedrock (156 m) on the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain and Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, with the highest silt soil distributions but comparable lower sand contents. The Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau had the highest clay soil content. The cultivation under Kastanozems and Leptosols on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and in arid and semiarid North China and under Phaeozems on the Northeast Plain should be restricted and managed very cautiously facing erosion risk. The higher percentages of Anthrosols are on the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain (37%), in Southern China (32%), and on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau (26%). The same cultivation aim (i.e., more crop 0production) has produced a similar range of properties over time among the soils developed on agricultural fields, which are classified as Anthrosols. However, various soil types can still be found in agroecosystems because of the variations in climate and topography. Our results highlight that the agriculture-based soil climate and topography shape the interaction of the soil development and not only the pedogenic history of the soil development under variations in the soil depth to bedrock but also the cultivation of distinct pedogenic features. This study provides cultivated soil information on the depth to bedrock, soil classification, and soil texture in China, as well as instructions for field strategies for sustainable agricultural development. Soil moisture content (SWC) can change the diversity and composition of soil fungal communities by affecting soil texture and soil nutrients. To explore the response of soil fungal communities to moisture in the grassland ecosystem on the south shore of Hulun Lake, we set up a natural moisture gradient that was subdivided into high (HW), medium (MW), and low (LW) water contents. Vegetation was investigated by quadrat method, and aboveground biomass was collected by the mowing method. Soil physicochemical properties were obtained by internal experiments. The composition of the soil fungal community was determined using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed significant differences in soil texture, nutrients, and fungal species diversity under the moisture gradients. Although there was significant clustering of fungal communities in different treatments, the fungal community composition was not significantly different. According to the phylogenetic tree, the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most important branches. The fungal species diversity was smaller when SWC was higher, and in this environment (HW), the fungal-dominant species were significantly related to SWC and soil nutrients. At this time, soil clay formed a protective barrier for the survival of the dominant classes Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes and increased their relative abundance. In summary, the fungal community responded significantly to SWC on the southern shore of the Hulun Lake ecosystem in Inner Mongolia, China, and the fungal community composition of the HW group was stable and easier to survive. As one of the physical quantities concerned in agricultural production, soil moisture can effectively guide field irrigation and evaluate the distribution of water resources for crop growth in various regions. However, the spatial variability of soil moisture is dramatic, and its time series data are highly noisy, nonlinear, and nonstationary, and thus hard to predict accurately. In this study, taking Jiangsu Province in China as an example, the data of 70 meteorological and soil moisture automatic observation stations from 2014 to 2022 were used to establish prediction models of 0–10 cm soil relative humidity (RHs10cm) via the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. Before constructing the model, according to the measured soil physical characteristics, the soil moisture observation data were divided into three categories: sandy soil, loam soil, and clay soil. Based on the impacts of various factors on the soil water budget balance, 14 predictors were chosen for constructing the model, among which atmospheric and soil factors accounted for 10 and 4, respectively. Considering the differences in soil physical characteristics and the lagged effects of environmental impacts, the best influence times of the predictors for different soil types were determined through correlation analysis to improve the rationality of the model construction. To better evaluate the importance of soil factors, two sets of models (Model_soil&atmo and Model_atmo) were designed by taking soil factors as optional predictors put into the XGBoost model. Meanwhile, the contributions of predictors to the prediction results were analyzed with Shapley additive explanation (SHAP). Six prediction effect indicators, as well as a typical drought process that happened in 2022, were analyzed to evaluate the prediction accuracy. The results show that the time with the highest correlations between environmental predictors and RHs10cm varied but was similar between soil types. Among these predictors, the contribution rates of maximum air temperature (Tamax), cumulative precipitation (Psum), and air relative humidity (RHa) in atmospheric factors, which functioned as a critical factor affecting the variation in soil moisture, are relatively high in both models. In addition, adding soil factors could improve the accuracy of soil moisture prediction. To a certain extent, the XGBoost model performed better when compared with artificial neural networks (ANNs), random forests (RFs), and support vector machines (SVMs). The values of the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute relative error (MARE), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE), and accuracy (ACC) of Model_soil&atmo were 0.69, 11.11, 4.87, 0.12, 0.50, and 88%, respectively. This study verified that the XGBoost model is applicable to the prediction of soil moisture at the provincial level, as it could reasonably predict the development processes of the typical drought event. Over-fertilization has a significant impact on soil microbial properties and its ecological environment. However, the effects of long-term fertilization on microbial properties on a large scale are still vague. This meta-analysis collected 6211 data points from 109 long-term experimental sites in China to evaluate the effects of fertilizer type and fertilization duration, as well as soil and climate conditions, on the effect sizes on various microbial properties and indices. The organic fertilizers combined with straw (NPKS) and manure (NPKM) had the highest effect sizes, while the chemical fertilizers N (sole N fertilizer) and NPK (NPK fertilizer) had the lowest. When compared with the control, NPKM treatment had the highest effect size, while N treatment had the lowest effect size on MBN (111% vs. 19%), PLFA (110% vs. −7%), fungi (88% vs. 43%), Actinomycetes (97% vs. 44%), urease (77% vs. 25%), catalase (15% vs. −11%), and phosphatase (58% vs. 4%). NPKM treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on bacteria (123% vs. 33%). NPKS treatment had the highest while N treatment had the lowest effect sizes on MBC (77% vs. 8%) and invertase (59% vs. 0.2%). NPKS treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on the Shannon index (5% vs. 1%). The effect sizes of NPKM treatment were the highest predominantly in arid regions because of the naturally low organic carbon in soils of these regions. The effect sizes on various microbial properties were also highly dependent on soil texture. In coarse-textured soils the effect sizes on MBC and MBN peaked sooner compared with those of clayey or silty soils, although various enzymes were most active in silty soils during the first 10 years of fertilization. Effect sizes on microbial properties were generally higher under NPKM and NPKS treatments than under NPK or N treatments, with considerable effects due to climate conditions. The optimal field fertilizer regime could be determined based on the effects of fertilizer type on soil microorganisms under various climate conditions and soil textures. This will contribute to the microbial biodiversity and soil health of agricultural land. Such controls should be used for adaptation of fertilization strategies to global changes. Determining response patterns of plant leaf elements to environmental variables would be beneficial in understanding plant adaptive strategies and in predicting ecosystembiogeochemistry processes. Despite the vital role of microelements in life chemistry and ecosystem functioning, little is known about how plant microelement concentrations, especially their bioconcentration factors (BCFs, the ratio of plant to soil concentration of elements), respond to large-scale environmental gradients, such as aridity, soil properties and anthropogenic activities, in drylands. The aim of the present study was to fill this important gap. We determined leaf microelement BCFs by measuring the concentrations of Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn in soils from 33 sites and leaves of 111 plants from 67 species across the drylands of China. Leaf microelement concentrations were maintained within normal ranges to satisfy the basic requirements of plants, even in nutrient-poor soil. Aridity, soil organic carbon (SOC) and electrical conductivity (EC) had positive effects, while soil pH had a negative effect on leaf microelement concentrations. Except for Fe, aridity affected leaf microelement BCFs negatively and indirectly by increasing soil pH and SOC. Anthropogenic activities and soil clay contents had relatively weak impacts on both leaf microelement concentrations and BCFs. Moreover, leaf microelement concentrations and BCFs shifted with thresholds at 0.89 for aridity and 7.9 and 8.9 for soil pH. Woody plants were positive indicator species and herbaceous plants were mainly negative indicator species of leaf microelement concentrations and BCFs for aridity and soil pH. Our results suggest that increased aridity limits the absorption of microelements by plant leaves and enhances leaf microelement concentrations. The identification of indicator species for the response of plant microelements to aridity and key soil characteristics revealed that woody species in drylands were more tolerant to environmental changes than herbaceous species. Determining the best management practices (BMPs) for farmland under different soil textures can provide technical support for improving maize yield, water- and nitrogen-use efficiencies (WUE and NUE), and reducing environmental N losses. In this study, a two-year (2013–2014) maize cultivation experiment was conducted on two pieces of farmland with different textural soils (loamy clay and sandy loam) in the Phaeozems zone of Northeast China. Three N fertilizer treatments were designed for each farmland: N168, N240, and N312, with N rates of 168, 240, and 312 kg ha−1, respectively. The WHCNS (soil Water Heat Carbon Nitrogen Simulator) model was calibrated and validated using the observed soil water content, soil nitrate concentration, and crop biological indicators. Then, the effects of soil texture combined with different N rates on maize yield, water consumption, and N fates were simulated. The integrated index considering the agronomic, economic, and environmental impacts was used to determine the BMPs for two textural soils. Results indicated that simulated soil water content and nitrate concentration at different soil depths, leaf area index, dry matter, and grain yield all agreed well with the measured values. Both soil texture and N rates significantly affected maize yield, N fates, WUE, and NUE. The annual average grain yield, WUE, and NUE under three N rates in sandy loam soil were 8257 kg ha−1, 1.9 kg m−3, and 41.2 kg kg−1, respectively, which were lower than those of loam clay, 11440 kg ha−1, 2.7 kg m−3, and 46.7 kg kg−1. The order of annual average yield and WUE under two textural soils was N240 > N312 > N168. The average evapotranspiration of sandy loam (447.3 mm) was higher than that of loamy clay (404.9 mm). The annual average N-leaching amount of different N treatments for sandy loam ranged from 5.1 to 13.2 kg ha−1, which was higher than that of loamy clay soil, with a range of 1.8–5.0 kg ha−1. The gaseous N loss in sandy loam soil accounted for 14.7% of the fertilizer N application rate, while it was 11.1%in loamy clay soil. The order of the NUEs of two textural soils was: N168 > N240 > N312. Many studies have shown that climatic and edaphic factors influence the variations in nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the relative importance of co-varying climatic and edaphic controls on plant δ15N remains somewhat unclear. To address this issue, regional-scale plant (L. chinensis) and soil samples were collected along a longitudinal transect across the temperate grasslands in northern China. The influences of climatic and edaphic factors on the plant δ15N were disentangled using the variable importance in projection (VIP) approach. We found that the climatic and edaphic variables explained 52.4% and 31.2%, respectively, of the variation in plant δ15N. The mean annual precipitation (MAP), soil N, and mean annual temperature (MAT) were the most important variables, but the soil water content (SWC), aridity index (AI), and soil clay content were also important variables. The soil pH and soil C: N ratios were identified as unimportant variables. Furthermore, a high-performance model for simulating plant δ15N values was constructed based on the important variables (VIP > 0.8). Further investigations should focus on the effects of the interaction between the climatic and edaphic variables on the N cycles in the temperate grasslands to provide more reliable predictions of plant δ15N. Identifying the impact path of climate and soil factors on soil δ15N is very crucial for better understanding the N turnover in soils and the integrated information about ecosystem N cycling. Many studies have showed that climate and soil variables influence the change of soil δ15N. However, most of the existing studies focused on the overall impact of factor on soil δ15N, without distinguishing between the direct and indirect effect. Although scholars have studied the relationships among temperature, precipitation, soil N, soil pH, and soil δ15N rather than estimating all the causal relationships simultaneously. To answer the above-mentioned questions, a regional-scale soil collection was conducted across a temperate grassland in northern China. Meanwhile, a PLS-PATH analysis was utilized to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of various factors on soil δ15N and to explore the causal relationships among variables. The results showed that along the transect, mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT) directly and significantly reduced soil δ15N, and indirectly affected soil δ15N through their effects on soil pH, soil clay, soil N and soil C/N. Soil C/N ratio has a significant direct impact on soil δ15N with a negative correlation. Soil clay, soil N content, and soil pH have a total positive effect on soil δ15N, but the total positive impact of soil pH is very weak because it has a negative indirect impact on soil δ15N by affecting soil clay, soil N and soil C/N ratio. The total influence is, in order, MAP > MAT > soil C/N > soil clay > soil N > soil pH (in absolute value). The fractal characteristics of soil particle-size distribution (PSD) constitute an important soil physical property, and fractal models of soil PSD are increasingly used to describe the effects of vegetation on the improvement of soil-related properties. Based on the fractal theory, this paper selected four typical vegetation restoration types (Quercus acutissima, QAC; Robinia pseudoacacia, RPL; Pinus densiflora, PDS; QAC × PDS) in the Taiyi mountainous area as the research object, and the single-fractal dimension (D) and multi-fractal parameters of PSD and its correlation with soil-associated properties were studied. The results show that (1) QAC × PDS reduced the heterogeneity of soil sand distribution, which also increased the range and concentration of soil PSD in the dense area. Soil clay and silt contents showed QAC × PDS > RPL > QAC > PDS. QAC × PDS significantly increased clay and silt content in 0–20 cm soil. (2) D varies among different vegetation restoration types, which was QAC × PDS > RPL > QAC > PDS, and the D of 0–20 cm soil was greater than that of 20–40 cm. For the multi-fractal parameters of PSD, the capacity dimension (D0), information dimension (D1), correlation dimension (D2) and D1/D0 in 0–20 cm soil of different vegetation restoration types showed significant differences. (3) D and multi-fractal parameters were significantly positively correlated with clay and silt contents, which were significantly negatively correlated with sand contents. (4) QAC × PDS had the smallest soil bulk density and largest porosity. Fractal dimension was negatively correlated with soil bulk density and positively correlated with soil total porosity and capillary porosity. These results indicate that the soil fractal dimension can well characterize the vegetation improvement on soil structure and properties in the earthy-rocky mountain areas of northern China. Unconventional water is an important water resource for agricultural utilization in the drought and water shortage of Northeast China. Additionally, exploration in making full use of it is an important way to alleviate water shortage in China. This paper analyzed the effects of unconventional water through field trials on the accumulation of heavy metals in both cucumbers and the typical black clay soil (expressed as black soil) around the Anshan metallic ore. By exploring the effects of unconventional water after secondary treatment on the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in cucumbers and the heavy metal balance in the soil–crop system under different conditions, the study shows that there are no significant differences in the heavy metal content when the quantity of unconventional water for irrigation varies. Unconventional water for short-term irrigation does not cause pollution to either the soil environment or the crops. Nor will it cause the accumulation of heavy metals, and the index for the heavy metal content is far below the critical value of the trade standard and national standard, which indicates that the crops irrigated with unconventional water during their growth turn out to be free of pollutants. Unconventional water brings less heavy metals into the black soil than crops. The input and output quantities have only small effects on the heavy metal balance in the black soil. High potential toxic element (PTE) concentrations in soils that exceed local regulatory threshold values have been reported in non-polluted mountainous areas worldwide. However, there have been few studies that have comprehensively investigated the contribution of natural factors including the parental material, pedogenesis processes and physiochemical properties of soils on the distribution of PTEs in these soils. Therefore, in this study, we studied the distribution of 13 PTEs in sloping farmland soils collected from a mountainous watershed in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. The contributions of natural influencing factors were analyzed using a geostatistical analysis and a geographic detector method. All of the PTEs were unevenly distributed, especially Sb, and the average contents of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Tl, Pb and Hg were 57.15, 36.20, 4.61, 12.61, 13.36, 63.50, 11.94, 0.78, 0.37, 6.44, 0.48, 27.42 and 0.36mg/kg, respectively. The proportion of samples with Cd, Hg and As exceeding the screening value of the soil pollution risk of agricultural land in China was 46.7%, 5.9% and 4.4%, respectively. Except for Cd and Pb, the q values of the PTEs calculated from the geographical detector were above 0.05, indicating that altitude changes, which affect the pedogenesis process, have a great impact on the spatial distribution. Stratigraphic factors contributed greatly to the distribution of Co, Ni and Cu, which indicates their similarity in parental material. The combined effect of clay content, topographic factors and agricultural land types had the strongest explanatory power for V, Cr, Mo and Pb. The distributions of As, Sb, Tl and Hg are strongly associated with a potential source of mercury ore, and their accumulation is also enhanced by the adsorption on soil clay. Knowledge of soil organic carbon (OC) components and enzyme activities is essential to maintain soil health and for sustainable land use during long-term vegetation restoration. The effects of vegetation restoration on soil physicochemical properties have been widely documented; however, knowledge of the relationships among soil OC components, enzyme activities, and soil properties in restored ecosystems remains unclear. Here, the soil from four successional stages of restored Robinia pseudoacacia vegetation (10, 20, 30, and 40 years) were sampled in China's Loess Plateau. The soil water content (SWC), bulk density (BD), pH, total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) contents, OC components (labile and recalcitrant OC), and soil enzyme (hydrolytic and oxidase) activities were measured. We found that restoration time significantly affects soil physicochemical properties, OC components and enzyme activities. Across the restoration time, the SWC decreased from year 10 to year 30, then increased from year 30 to year 40. Soil OC and TN increased with restoration time, while soil clay content decreased with restoration time. Following 40 years of restoration, soil MBC and MBN significantly increased by 214% and 88%, respectively. For OC components, 40 years of restoration significantly increased recalcitrant C component rather than labile C component. Soil hydrolytic enzyme activities significantly increased by 76.9% and 80.3% in 40 years stand compared with that of in 10 years stand, respectively, while soil oxidase enzyme activities significantly decreased with restoration time. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the SOC and MBC content significantly influenced soil recalcitrant C component and hydrolytic enzyme activities, while MBC and clay content significantly influenced soil oxidase enzyme activities. These results provided useful insights on the responses of forest restoration on soil OC components and related OC degrading enzymes and the understanding of soil C sequestration in the restored ecosystems in such areas. E or pyriminobac-methyl (EPM), a pyrimidine benzoic acid esters herbicide, has a high potential as weedicide; nevertheless, its environmental behaviors are still not well understood. In this study, we systematically investigated, for the first time, the adsorption–desorption, degradation, and leaching behaviors of EPM in agricultural soils from five exemplar sites in China (Phaeozems – S1 ; Anthrosol – S2 ; Ferralsol – S3 ; Alisol – S4 ; Plinthosol – S5) through laboratory simulation experiments. Our results show that the EPM adsorption–desorption results were well fitted by the Freundlich model (R2>0.9999). In the analyzed soils, the Freundlich adsorption (i.e., Kf ads) and desorption (i.e., Kf des) coefficients of EPM varied between 0.85 and 32.22 mg 1-1/n L 1/n kg -1 and 0.78–5.02 mg 1-1/n L 1/n kg -1 , respectively. The mobility of EPM in soils S1 – S5 was categorized as immobile, slightly immobile, highly mobile, slightly mobile, and slightly mobile, respectively. Moreover, the degradation of EPM reflected first-order kinetics, where its half-life ranged between 37.46 and 66.00 d, depending on the environmental conditions, and abiotic degradation was predominant in the degradation of this compound. Overall, the high leaching ability and desorption capacity of EPM were accompanied by a low adsorption capacity, and there were no significant relationships between pH and the leaching rate of EPM in the five types of soils. In contrast, the organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, and soil clay content were the main components responsible for the observed leaching rates. We found that EPM degrades easily, has a high adsorption affinity, and a low mobility in S1 , which results in a low contamination risk for groundwater systems. On the contrary, this compound degrades slowly in S2 , S3 , S4 , and S5 , due to a low adsorption affinity and moderate mobility, which results in a high contamination risk for groundwater systems. Miscanthus spp. are increasingly cultivated in cropland worldwide due to their bioenergy potential and multiple ecological services. Effects of long‐term cropland‐to‐Miscanthus conversion without N fertilizer on soil microbiome and N cycling largely remain unknown. We aimed to explore the effects of Miscanthus conversion on soil microbiome and N cycling over a 15‐year period. We analyzed diversity, composition, and abundance of bacterial and archaeal communities using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and abundances of N‐cycling‐related genes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction of 0–10 cm soils collected from bare land, cropland, 10‐year Miscanthus × giganteus, and 15‐year Miscanthussacchriflorus land in Beijing. Conversion decreased soil sand and micro‐aggregate proportion, nitrate N (NiN), available phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and pH, while increasing proportion of soil clay and macro‐aggregate (MAA), soil organic C (SOC), available N (AN), exchangeable Mg2+ (EMg2+), and available potassium (AK) contents as well as microbial C/N. Consequently, diversity, composition, and abundance of soil bacterial community exhibited larger changes than those values of archaeal community after conversion. Soil AP, EMg2+, AK, and SOC were key factors in shifting microbiome from the cropland to Miscanthus pattern. Moreover, abundances of bacterial and archaeal communities and the N fixer gene nifH increased, whereas that of the bacterial ammonia monooxygenase gene decreased. The copies of other N‐cycling‐related genes in the two Miscanthus lands seemed similar to those values of cropland. The nifH copies negatively correlated with soil NiN and positively correlated with AN, EMg2+, ECa2+, SOC, AK, and MAA. We conclude that changes in soil microbiome pattern induced by the variation of soil properties enhance microbial N fixation potential, maintaining stable N levels and robust N cycling with lower N leakage risk after conversion. Background: Forest restoration has been considered an effective method to increase soil organic carbon (SOC), whereas it remains unclear whether long-term forest restoration will continuously increase SOC. Such large uncertainties may be mainly due to the limited knowledge on how soil microorganisms will contribute to SOC accumulation over time. Methods: We simultaneously documented SOC, total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), and amino sugars (AS) content across a forest restoration gradient with average stand ages of 14, 49, 70, and > 90 years in southern China. Results: The SOC and AS continuously increased with stand age. The ratio of fungal PLFAs to bacterial PLFAs showed no change with stand age, while the ratio of fungal AS to bacterial AS significantly increased. The total microbial residue-carbon (AS-C) accounted for 0.95–1.66 % in SOC across all forest restoration stages, with significantly higher in fungal residue-C (0.68–1.19 %) than bacterial residue-C (0.05–0.11 %). Furthermore, the contribution of total AS-C to SOC was positively correlated with clay content at 0–10 cm soil layer but negatively related to clay content at 10–20 cm soil layer. Conclusions: These findings highlight the significant contribution of AS-C to SOC accumulation along forest restoration stages, with divergent contributions from fungal residues and bacterial residues. Tayi tunnel is one of the component tunnels in the Jian-Ge-Yuan Highway Project located in Yunnan Province, southeast of China. It mainly passes through talus-like formations comprised of rock blocks of diverse sizes and weak interlayers with clayey soils with different fractions. Such a special composition leads to the loose and fractured structure of talus-like formations, which is highly sensitive to the excavation perturbation. Therefore, Tayi tunnel has become the controlled pot of the whole highway project as the construction speed has to be slowed down to reduce the deformation of surrounding talus-like rock mass. To better understand the tunnel-induced ground response and the interaction between the surrounding rock mass and tunnel lining, a comprehensive in situ monitoring program was set up. The in situ monitoring contents included the surrounding rock pressure on the primary lining, the primary lining deformation, and the stress of steel arches. Based on the monitoring data, the temporal and the long-term spatial characteristics of mechanical behavior of surrounding rock mass and lining structure due to the excavation process were analyzed and discussed. It is found that the excavation of lower benches released the surrounding rock pressure around upper benches, resulting in the decrease of the surrounding rock pressure on the primary lining and the stress of steel arches. In addition, the monitoring data revealed that the primary lining sustained bias pressure from the surrounding rock mass, which thereby caused unsymmetrical deformation of the primary lining, in accordance with the monitored displacement data. A dynamically adaptive support system was implemented to strengthen the bearing capacity of the lining system especially in the region of an extremely weak rock mass. The dynamic penetration test (DPT) and the Menard pressuremeter test (PMT) have been widely used in geotechnical survey of deep soils for megadam foundations in western China. The DPT measures are not well utilized due to the lack of correction factors and of empirical relationships for deep soils. This study investigates the relationships between the corrected DPT blow counts (N 120 ′), pressuremeter modulus (EPMT), limit pressure (pL), deformation modulus (E0), and bearing capacity (fak) derived from the PMT results. Meanwhile, a nonlinear regression model is developed to predict the DPT correction factor (a) based on the raw DPT blow counts (N120) and the rod length (L) by integrating the available correction factors for shallow gravelly soils suggested by the code provisions and the deep soil data in this work. It is concluded that the proposed DPT correction factors match well with the code suggestions and the new compiled dataset, and the corrected DPT blow counts can be used to reasonably predict the engineering properties of deep sand and clay soils. Although the proposed correlations need to be tested among different soil types and regions, the results shed the light on in situ geotechnical tests and data utilization for deep and thick overburden. In north-west China, extensive areas of gravel desert exist, whose surface properties have an important effect on the wind-erosion threshold friction velocity u ∗ t . In this study, we use four models and field observations of gravel mass fraction, soil physical crust, and soil clay content to assess the effect of gravel-surface properties on the value of u ∗ t . Results show that gravel coverage in north-west China ranges between 0.07 and 1.00 (with a mean of 0.67), and about 81% of the sites investigated are covered by soil physical crust. Clay content is 2.4% on average in the study region, less than 2% in 52.1% of that region, and between 2 and 4% in the remaining study regions. The four regions where clay content is greater than the mean include the western Alxa Plain, the alluvial fan of the western Alxa Plain, the northern Alxa Plain, and the Hexi Corridor. In the study region, the value of u ∗ t ranges between 0.12 and 0.78 m s−1 (with a mean of 0.45 m s−1). Soil moisture, gravel coverage, and soil physical crust all affect the magnitude of u ∗ t . A principal component analysis indicates that the soil crust contributes of about 62% of the u ∗ t variations, soil moisture 25%, and surface roughness 9%. A variance analysis shows clear spatial differences in the magnitude of u ∗ t in north-west China due to the spatial variations in gravel land-surface properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High fertilizer input and nitric oxide (NO) emissions characterize the intensive vegetable production system. However, the amount, geographic distribution, and effective mitigation strategies of NO emissions over Chinese vegetable fields remain largely uncertain. In this study, we developed a data-driven estimate of NO emissions and their spatial pattern in Chinese vegetable fields based on the Random Forest (RF) model. Additionally, we conducted a field experiment in a subtropical vegetable field to investigate the effect of climate-smart practices on NO emissions. The RF model results showed that soil NO emissions from Chinese vegetable fields were sensitive to nitrogen application amount, soil clay content, and pH. The total NO emission from Chinese vegetable fields in 2018 was estimated to be 75.9 Gg NO–N. The urgency to reduce NO emissions in vegetable fields was higher in northern than in southern China. Our meta-analysis and field experiment results suggested that biochar amendment and replacing chemical fertilizers with bio-organic fertilizers were win-win climate-smart management practices for mitigating NO emissions while improving vegetable production. Overall, our study provided new insights into NO emissions in vegetable soil ecosystems and can facilitate the development of regional NO emission inventories and effective mitigation strategies. Current-used pesticides (CUPs) and plastic films are essential materials used in greenhouse cultivation, which can lead to the residual accumulation of CUPs and microplastics (MPs) over time. The impact of CUPs and MPs on soil quality and food safety cannot be overlooked. However, the combined pollution resulting from CUPs and MPs in greenhouse soil remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a survey at 30 greenhouse sites in the Wuqing District of Tianjin, China, to investigate the pollution levels and characteristics of CUPs and MPs using QuEChERS combined with LC-MS/MS, and density extraction, 30% H 2 O 2 digestion and micro-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the interactions among these two pollutants, soil physicochemical properties, and the bacterial community in the soil. CUPs were frequently detected in the examined soil samples; however, they posed no significant ecological risks due to their low levels. Furthermore, MPs, which predominantly comprised fragmented and fibrous polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) particles smaller than 1.0 mm, could potentially degrade into nanoplastics, which might subsequently enter the food chain and pose a serious threat to human health. We observed no substantial correlations between CUPs and MPs, except for a negative correlation between dimethomorph and film MPs. The soil pH and total organic carbon (TOC) exhibited interactions with both types of pollutants, whereas soil clay content (CC) only correlated with CUPs, and soil available nitrogen (AN) only correlated with MPs. The variability of soil bacterial communities among the 30 sampling sites was minimal, with the dominant genus being Bacillus. Soil pH, TOC, and CC collectively exerted a strong influence on the microbial community across all samples; however, the effects of CUPs and MPs on the soil microbial structure were marginal. These results contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the environmental stress and ecological risks associated with the combined pollution of CUPs and MPs. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]-contaminated soils have introduced a serious problem in China. Cr(VI) is hazardous to both the environment and public health and may degrade the engineering properties of soils. Accordingly, the effects of Cr(VI) on the physicochemical, mechanical, and microstructure properties of Chinese clay were investigated in this study. Results show that Cr(VI) had a considerable negative effect on the physicochemical, mechanical, and microstructure properties of soil. Specifically, Cr(VI) changed the physicochemical properties and degraded the mechanical properties of soil, led to the aggregation of soil particles, and created a large void space. Cr(VI) also changed the mineral composition of the soil and converted clay minerals into calcite. • Soil texture effect in temperate grassland region of China is examined. • A strong inverse soil texture effect on vegetation is evidenced. • Loam soil can be used as a benchmark to quantify effect of various textured soils. • Precipitation threshold for inverse texture effect increases with soil coarseness. The inverse texture effect of soil on vegetation has been reported in a few arid regions, but no information is available on the vast Chinese temperate grassland. In addition, no consistent criteria and approaches have been used to classify soil texture groups, determine the precipitation threshold (P θ) below which the inverse texture effect occurs, and quantify the effect size (Z), which has limited the generalization of the rules of the soil texture effect in different ecosystems. We analyzed the soil texture effect on vegetation using the remotely sensed vegetation data (MODIS/NDVI) and the Chinese soil profile texture data at 6851 sites in temperate grasslands of China. We found, first, a strong inverse texture effect, i.e., a higher NDVI on coarse- (>50 % sand) than fine-textured soil in low precipitation areas, and P θ was variable with annual precipitation and averaged 260 mm in the region. Second, we proposed a novel method to use the loam soil as a benchmark against which to quantify the effect of various textured soils, and determine P θ as the point on precipitation gradient where the soil texture effect shift from positive to negative or vice versa. As such, P θ decreased with soil coarseness, and increased with precipitation; and the texture effect decreased from positive to negative for sandy soils, whereas it increased from negative to positive for silt or clay soils, on the gradient of precipitation increase. Our results provide new insights into the relations of vegetation pattern and dynamics with precipitation and soil texture, and a method for quantifying and comparing soil texture effect across ecosystem types. Abstract The Song-Nen Plain in northeastern China holds one of the three largest expanses of soda saline-alkali soil in the world. Due to its disadvantageous geotechnical properties, the saline soil in this area is unable to meet the needs of construction projects. This study evaluates the stabilizing effect of adding lime to such soils. Specifically, it investigates how the physicochemical and mechanical properties and microstructure of soda saline-alkali soil are altered by lime and how these changes are affected by both freeze-thaw cycling and the duration of curing. The results reveal that adding lime to saline soil transforms clay particles into sand and silt particles and causes the pore size distribution (PSD) to become bimodal, with small-pore and macropore populations. An increase in lime content leads to an increase in the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) but a gradual decrease in both the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and plastic index. Freeze-thaw cycles break up coarse particles and aggregate finer particles, increasing the diameter of macropores and decreasing the USC; however, the effect on specimens with >9% lime is negligible. It is further shown that the geotechnical properties of the soil change immediately after the addition of lime, indicating that the cation exchange reaction takes place very quickly. Furthermore, the pozzolanic reaction leads to an increase in the percentage of sand-sized particles and a decrease in porosity after 28 days of curing. Overall, these results indicate that it is feasible to use lime to improve the engineering properties of soda saline-alkali soil in this area. Earth pressure balance shield (EPBS) has become the mainstream construction method for metro tunnels in China, which inevitably generates a large amount of discharged soil, putting enormous pressure on the environment and the cost. In order to realize the resource utilization of shield dregs, this paper explored the feasibility of recycling the waste silty clay as a soil conditioner in EPBS tunnel construction. Mixtures of bentonite, wasted silty clay, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and tap water in different ratios were prepared. Defining the substituted ratio as the mass ratio of silty clay to (bentonite + silty clay), the effect of the substituted ratio on the apparent viscosity, flow curve, rheological model and physical stability of bentonite-silty clay composite slurry were investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between slurry microstructures and macroscopic rheological properties was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the constitutive relationship of bentonite slurry (0% substituted ratio) can be well described by Herschel-Bulkley model. The silty clay has a deteriorating effect on the rheological behavior and physical stability, and changes the flow pattern of the composite slurry. Microscopically, CMC makes the clay particles in slurries form agglomerates with larger particle sizes, and can absorb excess free water from the slurry, thus significantly increasing the yield stress and apparent viscosity. The recycling scheme proposed in this study can not only greatly reduce the procurement cost of raw materials, but also eliminate the transportation and disposal costs of discharged soil, which has significant environmental benefits and promising application prospects. Unraveling the distributions and controls of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) accumulation is conducive to providing guidance for sustainable ecosystem management. Although the factors that affect soil C and N accumulation have been widely investigated, the relative importance of these factors and whether they confer direct or indirect effects remain unclear. Herein, we examined the distributions of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil inorganic carbon (SIC), and total nitrogen (TN) stocks across the 0–200 cm soil profiles in grasslands, forestlands, and shrublands on the Loess Plateau. Moreover, we determined the relative contributions of land use, topography, and soil properties (texture, water, phosphorus, and available nitrogen) to their variations. The results showed that with increasing soil depth, SOC and TN stocks decreased, while SIC stocks fluctuated. However, large amounts of SOC, SIC, and TN were stored in the deep soil layers (100–200 cm), with values of 3.06, 26.63, and 0.50 kg/m2, respectively. In the 0–200 cm soil layers, the total SIC stock was 53.40 kg/m2 and was 6.8 times higher than the total SOC stock. Among different plant communities, grasslands had the highest SIC stock (54.83 kg/m2), while Armeniaca sibirica and Robinia pseudoacacia had the highest SOC stock (10.06 kg/m2) and TN stock (1.49 kg/m2), respectively. Furthermore, approximately 85% of the variations in SOC, SIC, and TN stocks were jointly affected by land use, topography, and soil properties, in which soil properties acted as the most important driving factors, followed by topography and land use. In particular, topography affected SOC, SIC, and TN stocks mainly through its effects on soil texture and water. Soil contamination by microplastics (MPs) has gained widespread attention, whose fate may be influenced by land use types. The effects of land use types and the intensity of human activities on the distribution and sources of soil MPs at the watershed scale are unclear. In this study, 62 surface soil sites in representing five land use types (urban, tea garden, dryland, paddy field and woodland) and 8 freshwater sediment sites were investigated in the Lihe River watershed. MPs were detected in all samples, and the average abundance of soil and sediments was 401.85 ± 214.02 and 222.13 ± 54.66 items/kg, respectively. The soil MPs abundance followed the sequence: urban > paddy field > dryland > tea garden > woodland. Soil MP distribution and MP communities were significant different (p < 0.05) among land use types. The similarity of MP community highly correlated with geographic distance, and woodlands and freshwater sediments may be a potential fate for MPs in the Lihe River watershed. Soil clay, pH, and bulk density significantly correlated with MP abundance and fragment shape (p < 0.05). The positive correlation between population density, Total- Point of Interest (POI) and MP diversity indicates the importance of intensity of human activities in exacerbating soil MP pollution (p < 0.001). Plastic waste sources accounted for 65.12%, 58.60%, 48.15% and 25.35% of MPs in urban, tea garden, dryland and paddy field soils, respectively. Differences in the intensity of agricultural activities and cropping patterns were associated with different percentages of mulching film sources in the three types of agricultural soils. Knowledge of soil texture variations is critical for agricultural and engineering applications because texture influences many other soil properties. This study used random forest method to evaluate the effects of human activities and topographic parameters on the spatial variability of soil texture in hilly areas where soil parent material was uniform. The study site covers 252 km and is located in the Upper Yangtze River Basin of south-west China. A total of 3636 samples were collected from the cultivated soils at a depth of 20 cm of dryland (sloping field and terraced land) landscape. The soil texture class for each sample was estimated by experienced soil scientists in the field. Two soil texture classes (loam and clay) were observed in the watershed. Eleven terrain parameters were derived from a digital elevation model with a resolution of 30 m. Compared with loamy soils, clayey soils were mostly observed in the areas with lower elevation and gentle slopes. The outcome of random forest indicated that human activities and elevation had strong effects on soil texture class variations across the study site. Further results showed that the relative importance of terrain parameters to soil texture class variations varied with dryland landscape. Gully erosion is the most serious threat to sustainable development of global ecosystem and economy, with declining soil productivity and fertility threatening agricultural production. However, due to limitations in quantifying gully erosion rate, origin of erosion could be hardly distinguished. This study aimed to figure out this problem by developing a soil erosion estimation method based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) monitoring techniques. Specifically, 18 gullies with different terrain characteristics were selected across typical erosion regions in southeast China, and UAV low-altitude photography, weather station monitoring, and field sampling investigation were conducted from 2020 to 2021to monitor their total erosion volume (VE), collapse volume (VC), proportion of collapse volume to total erosion volume (VC%), morphological parameters (e.g., total length of scour channels, L; erosion area, A; residual volume, V; and hypsometric integral) and soil-environmental factors (rainfall, temperature, and soil properties). It showed that 92.65 % of VE was resulted from colluvial deposits, attributing to the variation of L. Additionally, VC quantifying the amount of gravity erosion was determined by soil clay content in the upper catchment (Clay1). And percentage of VC to VE, characterized by VC%, possessed a significant linear correlation with HI (R2 = 0.571, p < 0.001). Moreover, regional differences of VE and VC was mainly attributed to soil clay content in colluvial deposits (Clay3) and HI. Collectively, clay content in the gully system inhibited gully erosion, while all the morphologic factors facilitated the development of gully erosion. Appropriate nitrogen (N) application increases crop yield, while its unreasonable application results in environmental problem. Determining the appropriate N application rate is the key to sustainable development. Here, the denitrification-decomposition (DNDC) model was used to analyze the effects of N fertilizer on maize yields, economic benefits, nitrate leaching, and nitrous oxide emissions in China. The N application rate for the trade-off between economy and environment at the county scale was further determined. The geodetector model was used to identify the main driving factors and their interactions of the recommended N rate in each agricultural zone. The results showed that the recommended N rate was generally high in the northwest but low in the south, consistent with the spatial patterns of yield potential. However, clay soils with clay ratios greater than 34% in southern China and sandy soils with bulk densities greater than 1.5 g cm−3 on the Huanghuaihai Plain experienced high N levels and low yields, and thus soils need to be improved. Potential grain yield was the main driving factor in most zones, yet its effects gradually weakened from north to south. The influence of soil characteristics increased from north to south. It was found that the current average N application rate of farmers in China was 249 kg N/ha, and 86.55% of counties had excessive N applications. Compared to the regional optimal N rate at a regional scale, a differentiated N application strategy at the county scale determined in this study increased maize yield and economic benefit by 10.51% and 10.85%, respectively, and reduced N 2 O emissions and NO 3 − leaching by 28.72% and 33.60%, respectively. However, what and how environmental factors affect soil P availability in regional plantation ecosystems remains unclear. The study evaluated the effects of climatic factors, nitrogen deposition rate, stand attributes, litter characteristics, and soil-associated properties on soil P availability in Masson pine plantations across subtropical China using stepwise regression and structural equation modelling (SEM) analyses. At the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil depths, soil total P ranged from 0.24 to 0.43 g kg−1 and from 0.24 to 0.48 g kg−1, respectively. Similarly, soil available P varied from 0.35 to 7.55 mg kg−1 and from 0.14 to 4.34 mg kg−1, respectively. Soil total and available P had high values in the eastern and northern distribution areas of subtropical China. Soil total P linearly decreased with an increase in bulk density, clay and pH but linearly increased with an increase in DBH. These four factors had a similar contribution (15.5–35.1 %) to soil total P. Soil available P linearly decreased with an increase in bulk density and clay. The relative contribution of clay (48.1–75.7 %) to soil available P was higher than that of bulk density (16.2–33.5 %). Soil total P decreased during the initial 30 years of plantations and then increased. But other variables (e.g., climate, nitrogen deposition, and litter) had no significant impacts on soil P. Overall, the SEM explained 35.4 % and 28.1 % of soil available P variations at the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil depths, respectively, and revealed that clay had strong total effects (β = -0.526 and −0.396) on the soil available P. These results reveal the dominant roles of soil texture (especially clay) in affecting soil P availability in Masson pine plantations and suggest that extending the rotation period benefits soil P recovery in pine plantation ecosystems of subtropical China. The nationwide occurrence of endosulfan residues in cotton fields has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, 202 surface soil samples from 27 cities were collected from cotton fields in 8 major cotton-planting provinces of China, covering more than 97% of the national cotton sown area. The results showed that endosulfan residues were detected in cotton fields throughout the country. The main type of residue found was endosulfan sulfate (ES-sulfate), followed by β-endosulfan and α-endosulfan, with average concentrations of 0.475, 0.129, and 0.048 μg/kg, respectively. Significant spatial variations in the endosulfan residues was noted, and the highest concentration of endosulfan residues was observed in the northwest inland cotton-growing area, followed by that in the Yellow River basin and Yangtze River basin cotton-growing areas. The endosulfan residues showed significant positive correlations with soil organic matter and soil clay contents. The α/β endosulfan ratio was determined to be in the range of 0.02–1.20, indicating that endosulfan residues originated from the endosulfan application performed in historical cotton cultivation efforts. Together with the literature data, the concentrations of α-endosulfan and β-endosulfan residues peaked in 2015 and 2017, respectively, and showed an overall decreasing trend from 2002 to 2021. The results of the ecological risk assessment suggested that Folsomia candida was most sensitive to endosulfan residues, with 20.8% of the sites presenting a high risk. However, in general, the soil ecological risk of cotton fields across the country was low. Abstract: A type of clayey diatomaceous earth of Pliocene Mangbang Formation (N2 m) was encountered in highway projects in the Tengchong region of Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The Tengchong clayey diatomaceous earth is characterized using multiple test methods, such as granulometric analysis, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, shrinkage and swelling tests, unconfined or uniaxial compression test, triaxial test and direct shear tests. The chemical and mineralogical compositions, physical and hydraulic properties and engineering properties of the clayey diatomaceous earth are presented in this paper. It is revealed that the Tengchong clayey diatomaceous earth is an unusual soil or rock which has characteristics of both typical diatomaceous earth and swelling clayey soil or soft clay rock. The diatoms in the earth enhance the connection between micro-structures, and improve the mechanical properties of diatomaceous earth. However, due to the existence of a significant amount of swelling clay minerals, the Tengchong clayey diatomaceous earth becomes swelling soft rock, and is prone to engineering problems or geohazards. Based on the test results, a number of issues regarding classification, discrimination and geohazard control related with the clayey diatomaceous earth are discussed to provide both some basic understanding and new insight into the characteristics of the clayey diatomaceous earth deposits. In this paper, we studied the thermal history of a clay core sample from one leg of a bronze tripod unearthed at Daxinzhuang Site, Shandong, China. The properties of the luminescence signals of quartz depend on the maximum temperature at which the quartz was annealed in the past. We examined the feasibility of measuring the thermoluminescence (TL) sensitivity change of quartz for exploring the firing temperature of archaeological materials. The sensitization factor of the 110°C TL peak (S/S) and the ratio of the 210°C TL peak to the 110°C TL peak at different annealing temperatures were utilized to unveil the firing temperature in the clay core sample. The firing temperature of the clay core sample was approximately 700°C-800°C, proving the clay core has been fired. This result proved that the clay core has been fired by human agencies and indicated on the temperature of the clay core in drying and firing given by the foundry workers before the actual casting step. Because of its large size ( in plan), the 17.85- to 25.89-m-deep foundation pit of the 492-m-high Shanghai World Finance Center building was excavated by the central-island technique, i.e., bottom-up construction of the central cylindrical shaft first and then top-down construction of the peripheral rectangular pit. As part of the comprehensive study on the characteristics of this large-scale foundation pit, this study mainly focuses on the behaviors of the peripheral pit via the following investigated items: (1) lateral wall deflections; (2) vertical wall movements; (3) lateral ground movements; (4) axial forces in the cast floor slabs and braced struts; (5) lateral earth pressures on both sides of retaining walls; (6) variation of pore pressures along depth and deep artesian water levels; (7) ground settlements; (8) subsurface settlements; (9) basal heaves; (10) vertical column movements; and (11) column stresses. To explore the potential effects of pit sizes on the excavation behaviors, field data from another 33 top-down excavations in Shanghai were also included for comparison. The comprehensive comparisons show that in addition to the well-known factors (e.g., excavation depths, supporting system stiffness, and factor of safety against basal heave), pit sizes in plan played a key role in determination of the pit behaviors. The large-scale pits with the areas in plan of experienced wall deflections and ground settlements three to five times those of regular building basement and metro station excavations with the sizes in plan no more than , and the corresponding influence zones behind the large-sized pits were also much wider. Different from the braced struts that just carried the load because of soil removal in the proximity, the floor slabs sustained the load induced by exposure of the entire retaining wall along the depth. For the top-down excavations in Shanghai soft clay, the lateral earth pressure envelopes behind the retaining walls were trapezoidal, but their magnitudes were significantly smaller than those predicted by the methods available in the literature, and the corresponding peak values occurred at a greater depth. The influence zones of basal heave caused by soil removal (stress relief) extended much deeper below the excavation bases than those assumed in the conventional slip circle basal stability models. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) pollution in oilfield soils is a worldwide environmental problem. In this study, we analysed the spatial variation of residual TPH components and the ecological risk they pose. The soils of five selected oilfields in China, across 11 degrees of latitude and 17 degrees of longitude were selected for the investigation. The results showed that the non-zonal composition of the residual TPHs in the soil was similar to the that of the crude oil input. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the effect of zonal environmental factors explained 81.5% of the variability in the residual indexes of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. The first principal component, the soil clay and organic matter, correlated positively with the residual TPH index. The second principal component, the accumulated temperature, however, correlated negatively with the residual TPH index in the soil. Moreover, the application of the soil quality index (SoQI) and a Monte Carlo simulation for estimating the residual TPH content suggested that the ecological risk caused by residual TPHs in the soil decreased when the oilfield latitude and clay and organic matter content in the oilfield soil were lower. This study provides a basis for the assessment and monitoring of ecological risk in oilfield soils worldwide. The evolution of sliding zone soil originating from a muddy interlayer in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China is accompanied by an increase in clay content, and the subsequent changes in its mechanical properties control the initiation or reactivation of large-scale bedrock landslides. In this paper, using sliding zone soil samples from the Xingfusi landslide in the Wanzhou area, two groups of remolded saturated specimens were prepared with clay contents of 25.0% and 12.5%. Direct shear creep tests and a series of ring shear tests were carried out to investigate the shear behaviors of the specimens with different clay contents. On this basis, the effect of clay content on the evolution of landslides was discussed. The results show that (1) during the long-term creep process before landslide initiation, the shear creep modulus of sliding zone soil in steady creep state significantly decreases with an increase in clay content, which results in the increase in cumulative creep displacement. (2) The increase in clay content in sliding zone soil will lead to a reduction in peak shear strength and residual frictional resistance. In the drained shearing on saturated sliding zone soil with a high clay content, the excess pore-water pressure on the sliding surface cannot dissipate as rapidly due to the small permeability of sliding zone soil with a high clay content, which may favor postfailure movement. (3) With an increase in shear displacement rate, the residual strength first shows a weak "negative shear rate effect" and then shows a significant "positive shear rate effect". However, with an increase in clay content, the initial shear rate for the residual strength showing a "positive rate effect" will decrease. (4) Sliding zone soil with a high clay content generally does not exhibit strength recovery, while sliding zone soil with a low clay content clearly recovers its peak residual strength due to volume change of the shear zone caused by secondary compression after a long period of reconsolidation. A comprehensive understanding of the patterns and controlling factors of nitrate accumulation in intensive vegetable production is essential to solve this problem. For the first time, the national patterns and controlling factors of nitrate accumulation in soil of vegetable systems in China were analysed by compiling 1262 observations from 117 published articles. The results revealed that the nitrate accumulation at 0–100 cm, 100–200 cm, 200–300 cm, and >300 cm were 504, 390, 349, and 244 kg N ha−1, with accumulation rates of 62, 54, 19, and 16 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for plastic greenhouse vegetables (PG); for open field vegetables (OF), they were 264, 217, 228, and 242 kg N ha−1 with accumulation rates of 26, 24, 18, and 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Nitrate accumulation at 0–100 cm, 0–200 cm, and 0–400 cm accounted for 5%, 11%, and 17% of accumulated nitrogen (N) inputs for PG, and represented 4%, 9%, and 13% of accumulated N inputs for OF. Nitrogen input rates and soil pH had positive effects and soil organic carbon, water input rate, and carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) had negative effects on nitrate accumulation in root zone (0–100 cm soil). Nitrate accumulation in deep vadose zone (>100 cm soil) was positively correlated with N and water input rates, and was negatively correlated with soil organic carbon, C/N, and the clay content. Thus, for a given vegetable soil with relatively stable soil pH and soil clay content, reducing N and water inputs, and increasing soil organic carbon and C/N are effective measures to control nitrate accumulation. Two commonly encountered saprolitic soils in Hong Kong, weathered volcanic tuff (WT) and weathered granite (WG), were studied using high-quality intact samples. The intact samples exhibited quasi-preconsolidation pressure or yield stress under isotropic compression due to their bonded structures, but the yield was progressive and not abrupt. As the stress increased, significant volumetric changes were measured. These changes resembled clay-type behavior. The soils also exhibited anisotropic deformation under isotropic loading and unloading, which was associated with the features of their parent rocks. During the drained tests, shearing at the in situ stress-state produced peak strength and volumetric dilation. Undrained shearing showed complicated stress paths and dilatancy behavior in these soils. Phase transformation states and dilative shear failure were readily seen, which resembles typical sand-type behavior. Distinct shear band(s) appeared in the WT specimens during shearing, whereas a bulging type of failure appeared in the WG specimens. The soils ultimately approached the corresponding state guided by a unique critical state line, regardless of their complex initial states in relation to the bonded structure and drainage conditions. This study aimed to improve runoff simulations and explore deep soil hydrological processes for a watershed in the center of the Loess Plateau (LP), China. This watershed, the Wuding River Basin (WRB), has very complex topography, with soil depths ranging from 0 to 197 m. The hydrological model used for our simulations was the Community Land Model (CLM) version 5 developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Actual soil depths and river channels were incorporated into CLM to realistically represent the physical features of the WRB. Through sensitivity tests, CLM with 150 soil layers produced the most reasonable results and was adopted for this study. Our results showed that CLM with actual soil depths significantly suppressed unrealistic variations of the simulated sub-surface runoff when compared to the default simulations with a fixed soil depth of 8 m. In addition, CLM with higher-resolution soil layering slightly improved runoff simulations, but generated simulations with much smoother vertical water flows that were consistent with the uniform distribution of soil textures in our study watershed. The runoff simulations were further improved by the addition of river channels to CLM, where the seasonal variability of the simulated runoff was reasonably captured. Moreover, the magnitude of the simulated runoff remarkably decreased with increased soil evaporation by lowering the soil water content threshold, which triggers surface resistance. The lowered threshold was consistent with the loess soil, which has a high sand component. Such soils often generate stronger soil evaporation than soils dominated by clay. Finally, with the above changes in CLM, the simulated total runoff matched very closely with observations. When compared with those for the default runoff simulations, the correlation coefficient, root-mean-square error, and Nash Sutcliffe coefficient for the improved simulations changed dramatically from 0.02, 10.37 mm, and -12.34 to 0.62, 1.8 mm, and 0.61. Heavy metal risks to human health in farmland of wastewater-irrigated areas have long been recognized. It remains to be shown whether farmland heavy metals from wastewater irrigation can migrate to deeper soil at a regional scale. In this study, nine soil cores deep to 30 m from three transects (A, B and C) of a linear wastewater reservoir and the adjacent farmland topsoils and wheat grains were sampled. Heavy metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soils and wheat grains were determined, and the grains' health risks were assessed using the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ). Considerably high contents of heavy metals in both total and soluble forms were detected in deep soils, especially for the transect B where total As of 73.0 mg kg−1 at 29 m, Cd of 3.80 mg kg−1 at 13 m and Pb of 214 mg kg−1 at 30 m were detected. The silty clayey and silty layers of the transect B had higher contents of As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn compared with the sandy layers. Across the studied area, 19.5%–34.1% of the topsoil samples were contaminated by As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and 34.1% and 19.5% of the wheat grains were contaminated by Cd and Pb, respectively. Wheat grains from all the sampling sites had a combined target hazard quotient (TTHQ) value of >1, with As and Cd being the most important contributors. Our study revealed a wider and deeper risk of typical heavy metals originated from long-term wastewater irrigation in the sampling area, which may pose substantial health risks to the local residents via wheat grains and groundwater. The construction of buildings on expansive soils poses considerable risk of damage or collapse due to soil shrinkage or swelling made likely by the remarkable degree compressibility and weak shear resistance of such soils. In this research, rice husk ash (RHA) was added to expansive soil samples in different quantities of 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% by weight of soil to determine their effects on the plasticity index, compaction parameters, consolidation performance, and California bearing ratio (CBR)of clay soil. The results show that the use of RHA increases the effective stress and decreases the void ratio and coefficient of consolidation. Adding 16% RHA resulted in the greatest reduction in the hydraulic conductivity, void ratio, and coefficient of consolidation. The void ratio decreased from 0.96 to 0.93, consolidation coefficient decreased from 2.52 to 2.33 cm2/s, and hydraulic conductivity decreased from 1.12 to 0.80 cm/s. The addition of RHA improved the soil properties and coefficient of consolidation due to the high density and cohesiveness of RHA. With the increase in rainfall, landslides occur on many gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China. Gentle slopes have a particular dual geological structure, i.e., the lower part is a gravel soil layer with good water permeability, and the surface layer is clay soil with relatively poor water permeability. Under conditions of heavy rainfall, a gentle slope with this structure is likely to collect temporary confined water. The intermittent creep of the upper slope is caused by the floating force of the temporary confined water, which causes landslide disasters. The conditions that bring about temporary confined water are related not only to the stratum structure, but also to the rainfall intensity and the initial height of the water table level. On the basis of the characteristics of the stratum of the gentle slope landslide on the front of Fanshantou Mountain, we constructed a hydrological model in GEO-STUDIO. We investigated the effect of different rainfall intensities and initial water table levels on confined water under continuous rainfall conditions and conducted a corresponding stability analysis. The results show that when both the initial water table level and the rainfall intensity are high, temporary confined water is formed rapidly, increasing the chance of a landslide disaster. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of landslides on similar gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcareous soil has a strong buffering capacity for neutralizing acid and stabilizing cadmium (Cd) because of the high calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) content. However, it is not clear whether the buffering capacity of calcareous soil can be maintained after long-term wastewater irrigation. We selected a typical area in western China that has been irrigated with wastewater for over 50 years to study the temporal changes of soil properties and their effects on Cd uptake by wheat. The results showed that compared with the background level before the 1960s, the soil pH and CaCO 3 content in 2018 were lower by 0.80 units and 35%, respectively, while the soil organic matter (SOM) content, Olsen phosphorus (P) content, and soil total Cd content in 2018 increased by 1.54, 13.05, and 164 times, respectively. Due to the significant decrease in the soil pH and CaCO 3 , the high load of soil total Cd and electrical conductivity, the low soil clay content, and the coupling of SOM with soil nitrogen and P, the input Cd was activated. Furthermore, the activated Cd was effectively taken up by wheat roots and transported to grains with the assistance of dissolved organic carbon. Our results highlight that long-term wastewater irrigation caused irreversible damage to soil buffering capacity, resulting in the Cd activation and the enhancement of Cd uptake by wheat. Phenazines, a large group of nitrogen-containing heterocycles with promising bioactivities, can be widely used as medicines and pesticides. But phenazines also generate toxicity risks due to their non-selective DNA binding. The environmental fate of phenazines in soils is the key to assess their risks; however, hitherto, there have been very few related studies. Therefore in the present study, the degradation, adsorption and leaching behaviors of a typical natural phenazine—phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN) in agricultural soils from three representative places in China with different physicochemical properties were, for the first time, systematically studied in laboratory simulation experiments. Our results indicated that the degradation of PCN in all the tested soils followed the first order kinetics, with half-lives ranging from 14.4 to 57.8 d under different conditions. Soil anaerobic microorganisms, organic matter content and pH conditions are important factors that regulating PCN degradation. The adsorption data of PCN were found to be well fitted using the Freundlich model, with the r2 values above 0.978. Freundlich adsorption coefficient K f of PCN ranged from 5.75 to 12.8 [(mg/kg)/(mg/L)1/n] in soils. The retention factor R f values ranged from 0.0833 to 0.354, which means that the mobility of PCN in the three types of soil is between immobile to moderately mobile. Our results demonstrate that PCN is easily degraded, has high adsorption affinity and low mobility in high organic matter content and clay soils, thus resulting in lower risks of contamination to groundwater systems. In contrast, it degraded slowly, has low adsorption affinity and moderately mobile in soils with low organic matter and clay content, therefore it has higher polluting potential to groundwater systems. Overall, these findings provide useful insights into the future evaluation of environmental as well as health risks of PCN.
