The reuse of waste papers by conversion into valuable carbon materials has received considerable attention for diverse applications such as energy storage and water purification. However, traditional methods for converting waste papers into materials with suitable properties for specific applications are often complex and ineffective, involving consecutive carbonization and activation steps. Herein, we propose a simple one-step microwave (MW)-assisted synthesis for preparing waste paper-derived porous carbons (WPCs) for energy storage and water purification. Through a 30-min synthesis, WPCs with graphitic structure and high specific surface area were successfully produced. The fabricated WPCs exhibited outstanding charge storage capability with a maximum specific capacitance of 237.7 F g -1 . Additionally, the WPC demonstrates a high removal efficiency for various dyes, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 95.0% for methylene blue. The work describes the combination of granulated biomass fly ash (G BFA ) with Fenton process to enhance the removal of adsorbable organic halides (AOX) from pulp bleaching wastewater. At optimal operating conditions, wastewater's chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD 5 , respectively) and colour were also quantified, and operating cost of treatment assessed. For the first time, raw pulp bleaching wastewater was used to granulate BFA, instead of water, reducing the water footprint of the treatment. Five wastewater treatment setups were studied: (i) conventional Fenton process; (ii) G BFA application; (iii) simultaneous application of G BFA and Fenton process; (iv) sequential treatment by G BFA followed by Fenton process; (v) sequential treatment by Fenton process followed by G BFA . The latter yielded the highest AOX removal (60-70%), whilst COD was also reduced (≈15%) and wastewater biodegradability (BOD 5 /COD) was enhanced from 0.075 to a maximum of 0.134. Another positive feature of the proposed solution was that G BFA were successfully recovered and reused without regeneration, yielding similar AOX removal compared with fresh G BFA . The article presents the research results of the oxidation of watered toxic waste from the pulp and paper industry (sludge-lignin, the empirical formula of organic matter CH 1.51 N 0.05 S 0.03 Cl 0.01 O 0.54 ) in supercritical water-oxygen (SCW/O 2 ) fluid. The experiments were carried out using a flow tube reactor at a pressure of 25 MPa, temperature gradient along its vertical axis (from top to bottom: 390-600 °C), sludge-lignin flow rate of 9.5-14.5 g/min, oxygen ratio OR = 0.73-2.52, using NaOH (1.6 wt%) as a catalyst. Employing gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, polychlorophenols were identified in the composition of sludge-lignin, in which 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was the main component. The total yield of extracted phenols and chlorophenols per sludge-lignin organic matter was 20.82 and 2.88 μg/g, respectively. It is revealed that the conversion rate of sludge-lignin in SCW/O 2 fluid is limited by heterogeneous oxidation of the carbonized residue, and is determined by the O 2 content in the reaction mixture. At OR ≥ 1.16, only CO 2 , CO, N 2 , and N 2 O were detected in the volatile oxidation products. An increase in OR from 0.73 to 2.52 leads to a decrease in the total content of phenols (from 45540.1 to 129.3 μg/dm 3 ) and chlorophenols (from 51.4 to 2.2 μg/dm 3 ) in the water collected at the reactor outlet. It is shown that 2,6-dichlorophenol and 2-chlorophenol are the most resistant to oxidation. From the analysis of the initial sludge-lignin and mineral residues, it follows that the bulk of the chlorine contained in its organic matter is converted into NaCl in the course of oxidation., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The present study aimed to investigate indigenous bacteria possibility in recycled paper and cardboard mill (RPCM) wastewater treatment through the isolation and identification of full-scale RPCM indigenous bacteria. The molecular characterization of the isolated bacteria was performed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Klebsiella pneumoniae AT-1 (MZ599583), Citrobacter freundii AT-4 (OK178569), and Bacillus subtilis AT-5 (MZ323975) were dominant strains used for RPCM wastewater bioremediation experiments. Under optimal conditions, the maximum values of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color biodegradation by C. freundii AT-4 were 79.54% and 43.81% after 10 days of incubation, respectively. In the case of B. subtilis strain AT-5 and K. pneumoniae AT-1, the maximum values of COD and color biodegradation were 70.08%, 45.96%, 71.26%, and 32.06%, respectively. The results from optimal conditions regarding efficiency were higher in comparison with the efficiency obtained from the oxidation ditch treatment unit in full-scale RPCM-WWTP. In this work, the performance of residual iron dust (RID) from metallurgic industry was assessed as Fenton catalyst for the treatment of real pulp bleaching wastewater. The focus was on the removal of recalcitrant pollutants AOX (adsorbable organic halides), by a novel, cleaner, and cost-effective circular solution based on a waste-derived catalyst. The behaviour of RID as iron source was firstly assessed by performing leaching tests at different RID:wastewater w/v ratios and contact time. Afterwards, RID-catalysed homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton processes were conducted to maximise AOX removal from the pulp bleaching wastewater. Reusability of RID was assessed by a simple collect-and-reuse methodology, without any modification. Similar AOX removal under less consumption of chemicals was achieved with the novel heterogeneous Fenton process. Reaction in the bulk solution was the main pathway of AOX removal, given that the low surface area and porosity of the material did not allow for a high contribution of surface reaction to the overall performance. Moreover, AOX removal was similar over two consecutive treatment cycles, with Fenton process being responsible for 56.7-62.1% removal of AOX from the wastewater, and the leaching step adding 11.4-13.2%. At the end of treatment, COD either decreased (1 st cycle) or remained unchanged (2 nd and 3 rd cycle). The operating cost of the optimised heterogeneous Fenton was 3-11% lower than under conventional Fenton process. The pulp and paper industry consumes enormous quality of freshwater, leading to wastewater. It must be treated to remove pollutants, particularly residual dyestuffs, before releasing them to water bodies to avoid adverse environmental effects. The traditional wastewater treatment methods used for the pulp and paper industry are less efficient in colour and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The current study is aimed at developing a novel catalyst for the catalytic ozonation of pulp and paper wastewater with better colour and COD removal for sustainable resources of clean water. The proposed catalyst is impregnated by iron on natural zeolites. Various parameters such as catalyst dose, pH, ozone dose, initial COD concentration, and reaction time are studied and optimized. The performance was evaluated by comparing the results with the single ozonation process (SOP) and catalytic ozonation process (COP). The highest COD and colour reduction efficiencies have been achieved, i.e., 71%, and 88% at a natural pH of 6.8. The proposed process achieved higher COD and colour efficiencies than the single ozonation process and catalytic ozonation process using raw zeolites. The improvement in efficiencies are 23% and 29% for SOP and 17% and 19% for COP, respectively. Herein, bifunctional two-dimensional copper-aluminum modified filter paper composite (2D-Cu/Al-C) was successfully prepared by simple calcination and showed ultrahigh adsorption performance and degradation potential. The adsorption removal of TC on 2D-Cu/Al-C all exceeded 92.2% under solution conditions of 10-200 mg/L TC, 100 mg/L 2D-Cu/Al-C, pH 8 and 298 K. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models better fitted the kinetic and isotherm data via spontaneous and exothermic process, and the maximum capacity of the 2D-Cu/Al-C was 2391.78 mg/g. Additionally, 2D-Cu/Al-C showed desired specific adsorption for TC (TC: 98.7%, norfloxacin: 5.8%, sulfamethoxazole: 2.1%, and ciprofloxacin: 1.8%) and it could effectively adsorbed TC even in the binary system (various coexisting ions or natural organic matter). After TC adsorbed on adsorbent was mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O by adding peroxydisulfate to generate high electrode potential radical in another limited systems, the 2D-Cu/Al-C still had ∼89.12% on TC removal (initial concentration of 50 mg/L) after five experimental cycles. Zeta potential, FT-IR and XPS results indicated that the multi-adsorption mechanism, including electrostatic interactions, complexation, and H-bonds, played a vital role in the fast and efficient adsorption process. A lignin peroxidases-producing Serratia liquefaciens was used for bioremediation of pulp and paper (P&P) mill effluent. The treatment led to reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), colour, lignin and phenolic content by 84%, 72%, 61% and 95%, respectively. The effluent detoxification was studied by genotoxicity assays using Allium cepa L. (onion) root tip cells. Genotoxicity studies included measuring mitotic index (MI), chromosomal aberrations (CA) and nuclear abnormalities (NA) in root tip cells following treatment with 25, 50, 75 and 100% (v/v) of effluent. The root tip cells grown in untreated effluent showed a significant decrease in MI from 69% (control) to 32%, 27%, 22% and 11% at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% effluent concentration, respectively. This indicated that the untreated effluent was highly cytotoxic in nature. Further, root tip cells, when treated with different concentrations of effluent showed various CA and NA including c-mitosis, stickiness, chromosome loss, chromosome break, anaphase bridge, multipolar anaphase, vagrant chromosomes, micronucleated and binucleated cells. The MI observed in root tip cells grown in bacterial treated effluents at similar concentrations (25, 50, 75 and 100% v/v) showed an increase of 33%, 36%, 42% and 66%. CA showed a substantial decrease and in some instances, complete absence of CA was also observed. In this work, heterogeneous photocatalysis was used to treat pulp and paper mill effluent (PPME). Magnetically retrievable Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 was fabricated by employing a solvent-free mechanochemical process under ambient conditions. Findings elucidated the successful incorporation of Fe 2 O 3 into the TiO 2 lattice. Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 was found to be an irregular and slightly agglomerated surface morphology. In comparison to commercial P25, Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 exhibited higher ferromagnetism and better catalyst properties with improvements in surface area (58.40 m 2 /g), pore volume (0.29 cm 3 /g), pore size (18.52 nm), and band gap (2.95 eV). Besides, reusability study revealed that Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 was chemically stable and could be reused successively (five cycles) without significant changes in its photoactivity and intrinsic properties. Additionally, this study demonstrated the potential recovery of Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 from an aqueous suspension by using an applied magnetic field or sedimentation. Interactive effects of photocatalytic conditions (initial effluent pH, Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 dosage, and air flow-rate), reaction mechanism, and the presence of chemical oxidants (H 2 O 2 , BrO 3 - , and HOCl) during the treatment process of PPME were also investigated. Under optimal conditions (initial effluent pH = 3.88, [Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 ] = 1.3 g/L, and air flow-rate = 2.28 L/min), the treatment efficiency of Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 was 98.5% higher than the P25. Based on Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model, apparent rate constants of Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 and P25 were 9.2 × 10 -3 and 2.7 × 10 -3 min -1 , respectively. The current technologies to treat hypersaline produced water (PW), such as thermal evaporation, are usually energy-intensive and cost-prohibitive. This study developed a low-cost, robust, solar-driven carbon black and airlaid paper-based evaporator (CAPER) for desalination of PW in the Permian Basin, United States. The study aims to better understand the removal of aromatic organic compounds and heavy metals during solar distillation, water output, and heat transfer. Outdoor experiments using CAPER assisted with polystyrene foam in a single slope, single basin solar still achieved an enhanced average evaporation rate of 2.23 L per m 2 per day, 165% higher than that of a conventional solar still. Analysis of heat transfer models demonstrated that CAPER solar evaporation achieved an evaporative heat transfer coefficient of ∼28.9 W m -2 ·K -1 , 27.9% higher than without CAPER. The maximum fractional energy of evaporation and convection heat transfer inside the solar still with and without CAPER was ∼81.4% and ∼78.2%, respectively. For the PW with a total dissolved solids concentration of 134 g L -1 , solar distillation removed 99.97% salts and over 98% heavy metals. The high removal efficiency of 99.99% was achieved for Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ni, Se, Sr, and V. Organic characterization revealed that solar distillation removed over 83% aromatic compounds. The competence of novel fungal consortium, consisting of Nigrospora sp. LDF00204 (accession no. KP732542) and Curvularia lunata LDF21 (accession no. KU664593), was investigated for the treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent. Fungal consortium exhibited enhanced biomass production under optimized medium conditions, i.e., glucose as carbon (C), sodium nitrate as nitrogen (N), C/N 1.5:0.5, pH 5, temperature 30 °C, and agitation 140 rpm, and significantly reduced biochemical oxygen demand (85.6%), chemical oxygen demand (80%), color (82.3%), and lignin concentration (76.1%) under catalytic enzyme activity; however, unutilized ligninolytic enzymes, such as laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP), and lignin peroxidase (LiP), were observed to be 13.5, 11.4, and 9.4 U/ml after the third cycle of effluent treatment in repeated batch process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fungal consortium revealed their compatibility through intermingled hyphae and spores, while the FTIR spectra confirmed the alteration of functional groups ensuring structural changes during the effluent treatment. Gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis showed the reduction of complex compounds and development of numerous low-molecular-weight metabolites, such as 1-3-dimethyl benzene, 2-chloro-3-methyl butane, pentadecanoic acid, and 1-2-benzene dicarboxylic acid, during the treatment, demonstrating the massive potential of the novel fungal consortium to degrade recalcitrant industrial pollutants.

Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) has been widely used in intensive aquaculture systems to control stress during handling and confinement operations. This compound is dissolved in the water tanks and, once it is present in the Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RASs), MS-222 can reach the environment by the discharge of contaminated effluents. The present work proposes the implementation of the adsorption process in the RASs, using pyrolysed biological paper mill sludge as adsorbent, to remove MS-222 from aquaculture wastewater. Adsorption experiments were performed under extreme operating conditions, simulating those corresponding to different farmed fish species: temperature (from 8 to 30 °C), salinity (from 0.8 to 35‰) and different contents of organic and inorganic matter in the aquaculture wastewater. Furthermore, the MS-222 adsorption from a real aquaculture effluent was compared with that from ultrapure water. Under the studied conditions, the performance of the produced adsorbent remained mostly the same, removing satisfactorily MS-222 from water. Fluoride removal from aqueous solution by adsorption using fly ash cenospheres (FAC) modified with paper mill lime mud (LM) as composite adsorbent had been investigated. The characterization of FAC and composite adsorbent were analyzed by Scanning electron spectroscope (SEM), Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer emmett teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), which demonstrated that the porous structure of composite adsorbent was obtained after surface modification. Adsorption of fluoride on modified fly ash cenospheres was fitted with pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of F - concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage and temperature on the removal efficiency. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the adequacy of the mathematical models. The Nonelectrostatic model of modified fly ash cenospheres adsorbing fluoride was built through the Generalized composite method, indicating that two inner-spherical complexes, ≡SF and ≡SOHF - , were formed in the adsorption process by means of the ligand exchange and surface complexation. Recycling of industrial wastewater meeting quality standards for agricultural and industrial demands is a viable option. In this study, paper and pulp industrial wastewater were treated with three biological treatments viz. aerobic, anaerobic and sequential (i.e. 20 days of anaerobic followed by 20 days of aerobic cycle), associated with simulation modeling by Mamdani Fuzzy Logic (MFL) model of some selected parameters. Electric air diffuser and minimal salt medium in sealed plastic bottles at control temperature were used for aerobic and anaerobic treatments, respectively. The significant reduction in chemical (COD: 81%) and biological oxygen demand (BOD: 71%), total suspended (TSS: 65%), dissolved solids (TDS: 60%) and turbidity (68%) was recorded during sequential treatment. The treated water was irrigated to determine its phytotoxic effects on seed germination, vigor and seedling growth of mustard (Brassica campestris). Sequential treatment greatly reduced phytotoxicity of wastewater and showed the highest germination percentage (90%) compared to aerobic (60%), anaerobic (70%) treatments and untreated wastewater (30%). Regression analysis also endorsed these findings (R 2  = 0.76-0.95 between seed germination, seedling growth and vigor). MFL technique was adopted to simulate sequential treatment process. The results support higher performance of MFL model to predict TDS, TSS, COD, and BOD based on the physico-chemical water quality parameters of raw wastewater, time of treatment and treatment type variation. Lead (Pb) pollution from local mines and industrial use increases risks for human, animal, and plant health. Pectin is an effective chelator of Pb, and it has been shown that a unicellular green alga, Penium margaritaceum, synthesizes pectin in the cell wall. In this study, the ability of P. margaritaceum to remove Pb from an aqueous solution was investigated. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that two strains of P. margaritaceum accumulated Pb on the cell surface. Hence, P. margaritaceum cells were immobilized on cellulose filter paper. The immobilized algal cells were soaked in 1.0 mg/L Pb solution with gentle shaking for 8 h, and Pb in the solution and on the filter paper was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The immobilized algal cells continuously decreased the Pb concentration to less than 0.5 mg/L and recovered 31.8–32.7% of added Pb. The specific decrease in Pb and increase in Ca were observed in the presence of 1.0 mg/L each of Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that the carboxylic acid group would be responsible for the adsorption of Pb. This study is the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of the immobilized P. margaritaceum cell in removing Pb from aqueous solutions with simple solid–liquid separation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficiency of several lab scale treatments (aerobic, anaerobic and ozone or combination of these) was evaluated using two packaging board mill whitewaters. The effect of the different treatments on the elimination of the organic load, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the toxicity was tested as well as the relationship between these parameters. Biocides, phenolic compounds, surfactants, plasticiziers and wood extractives were identified in untreated and treated whitewaters by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A strong dependency on the water type and treatment efficiency was observed, being the combination of anaerobic and aerobic treatments the best option to reduce the organic contaminants in these waters, although in some cases, the toxicity did not decrease. However, ozone as post-treatment permitted a further reduction of organic compounds, toxicity and COD.

Desalination of seawater, brackish water, and reclaimed water is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide to supplement and diversify fresh water supplies. However, particularly for industrial wastewater, the need for environment-friendly and economically viable alternatives for concentrate management is the major impediment to deploying large-scale desalination. This review covers various strategies and technologies for managing reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) and also includes their disposal, treatment, and potential applications. Developing energy-efficient, economical, and ecologically sound ROC management systems is essential if desalination and wastewater treatment are being implemented for a sustainable water future, particularly for industrial wastewater. The limitations and benefits of various concentrate management strategies are examined in this review. Moreover, it explores the potential of innovative technologies in reducing concentrate volume, enhancing water recovery, eliminating organic pollutants, and extracting valuable resources. [Display omitted] Solar interfacial evaporation is one of the most efficient and environmentally-friendly clean freshwater production technologies. Plasma metal nanoparticles are excellent optical absorption materials, but their high cost and inherent resonance narrow bandwidth absorption limit their application. In this work, commercial cellulose papers are used as substrates to synthesize Ag-Ni/cellulose paper by the seed-mediated method. The Ag-Ni/cellulose paper exhibits high light absorption at the full wavelength (200–2500 nm) resulting from the synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag NPs and the interband transitions (IBTs) of Ni. Under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m−2), the energy utilization efficiency of Ag-Ni/cellulose paper is as high as 93.8%, and the water evaporation rate is 1.87 kg m−2 h−1. Diffusion inhibition experiment results show that the Ag-Ni/cellulose paper exhibits excellent antibacterial performance, and the antibacterial performance is highly related with Ag NPs content. The potential health and environmental hazards of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been a concerned issue. However, in contrast to the wide recognition of the toxicity of CNTs, little attention has been paid to the decontamination/remediation of CNT pollution. In this study, we report that CNTs can be removed from aqueous environment. In the presence of Ca²(+), CNTs aggregate quickly to micron size and then enable easy and effective removal via normal filtration. After filtration, CNT suspension becomes colorless with the remnant CNT concentration less than 0.5 μg mL⁻¹, a safe dose based on the published data. The filtration approach also works well in the presence of typical surfactant and dissolved organic matter. Iminodiacetic acid was immobilized on waste paper by chemical modification in order to develop a new type of adsorption gel for heavy metal ions. Adsorption behavior of the gel was investigated for a number of metal ions, specifically Cu(II), Pb(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Co(II) at acidic pH. From batch adsorption tests, the order of selectivity was found to be as follows: Cu(II)>>Fe(III)>Pb(II)>Ni(II)>>Co(II)>Cd(II). Column tests were carried out for pairs of metal ions to understand the separation and pre-concentration behavior of the gel. It was found that mutual separation of Ni(II) from Co(II) and that of Pb(II) from Cd(II) can be achieved at pH 3. Similarly, selective separation of Cu(II) from Cu(II)-Fe(III) and Cu(II)-Pb(II) mixtures at pH 1.5 and 2, respectively, was observed by using this new adsorption gel. In all cases, almost complete recovery of the adsorbed metal was confirmed by elution tests with HCl.

An efficient sequential, biological and photocatalytic treatment to reduce the pollutant levels in wastewater due to the bleaching process during paper production is reported. For a biological pre-treatment, 800 ml of non-sterilized effluent was inoculated with Trametes versicolor immobilized in polyurethane foam, with 25 g l(-1) glucose, 6.75 mM CuSO(4), and 0.22 mM MnSO(4) added, and cultured at 25 degrees C with an air flow of 800 ml min(-1) for 8d. The fungus did not inhibit growth of the heterotropic populations of the effluent. After 4d of culture, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction and colour removal (CR) were 82% and 80%, respectively, with laccase (LAC) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) activities of 345 U l(-1) and 78 U l(-1), respectively. The COD reduction and CR correlated positively (p<0.0001) with LAC and MnP activities. Chlorophenol removal was 99% of pentachlorophenol, 99% of 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (2,3,4,6-TCP), 98% of 3,4-dichlorophenol (3,4-DCP) and 77% of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), while 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP) increased to 0.2 mg l(-1). The pre-treated effluent was then exposed to a photocatalytic treatment. The treatment with photolysis resulted in 9% CR and 46% COD reduction, 42% CR and 60% COD reduction by photocatalysis, and 62% CR and 85% COD reduction by heterogeneous photocatalysis with the system TiO(2)/Ru(x)Se(y) (Fig. 4). With this treatment the bacterial and fungal populations also decreased by 5 logarithmic units with respect to the biological treatment alone (Fig. 5). The total sequential treatment resulted in a 92% CR (from 5800 UC), 97% COD reduction (from 59 g l(-1)) and 99% chlorophenol removal at 96 h and 20 min.

A novel adsorbent, the uniform fiber ball (UFB) loaded with polypyrrole (UFB-PPy), was synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from water in this paper. The structure of the UFB and UFB-PPy were characterized by SEM, EDS, FT-IR, BET, XPS and TG. The adsorption properties of UFB-PPy towards Cr(VI) were investigated by the effects of temperature, initial concentration of Cr(VI), interfering ions and contact time in batch experiments, the isothermal models (Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin) and the kinetic models (Pseudo first-order kinetic, Pseudo second-order kinetic and Intra-particle diffusion models) were used to describe the adsorption behavior. The effects of the initial concentration and flow rate of the Cr(VI) solution in the column experiments were also studied, and the dynamic models (Yoon-Nelson, Adams-Bohart and Wolborska model) were applied to predict the adsorption performance. The Cr(VI) removal mechanism of UFB-PPy was revealed by studying the effect of pH on adsorption, testing of Cl - , and analyzing the XPS. The results showed that UFB-PPy exhibited excellent adsorption properties for Cr(VI) both in batch and column adsorption. The possible adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and reduction. Chromatographic columns packed with paper mill sludge are employed for metal ion recovery from water. The breakthrough curves show that cadmium, copper, lead and silver are removed from acid solutions (pH 2, 4); the affinity series is Pb(II)>Cu(II)>Ag(I)>Cd(II). Both the amount of metal retained and the metal-matrix interaction are pH dependent; the sorptive capacity increases with increasing pH. When the metals are present together at the same initial concentrations a competition among the different ions occurs although the affinity order remains unchanged. In metal recovery from the paper mill sludge column, the total amount of the cadmium and copper is displaced by HCl 1.0 M, 65% of the lead by HCl 0.1 M and 75% of the silver by HNO(3) 0.1 M. More than 95% of copper and lead and less than 20% of cadmium were recovered with HCl 0.1 M when the metals were present at the same time.

Phyto-sterols and extractives found in pulp mill effluents are suspected to cause endocrine abnormalities in receiving water fish. The control of sterols in pulp mill effluents through biological secondary wastewater treatment was studied using two lab-scale bioreactor systems. After achieving a stable performance, both bioreactor systems successfully removed (>90%) sterols and the estimated biodegradation was up to 80%. Reactor 1 system operating at 6.7 ± 0.2 pH effectively treated pulp mill effluent sterols spiked up to 4500 μg/L in 11 h HRT and 11 day SRT. However, Reactor 2 system operating at 7.6 ± 0.2 pH performed relatively poorly. Retention time reductions beyond critical values deteriorated the performance of treatment systems and quickly reduced the sterols biodegradation. The biodegradation loss was indicated by mixed liquor sterols content that started increasing. This biodegradation loss was compensated by the increased role of bio-adsorption and the overall sterols removal remained relatively high. Hence, a relatively small (20-30%) loss in the overall sterols removal efficiency did not fully reflect the associated major (60-70%) loss in the sterols biodegradation because the amount of sterols accumulated in the sludge due to adsorption increased so the estimate of sterols removal through adsorption increased from 30-40% to 70-80% keeping the overall sterols removal still high., (Crown Copyright © 2013. Pulp mill effluent was treated by different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) consisting of UV, UV/H2O2, TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) and UV/H2O2/TiO2 in lab-scale reactors for total organic carbon (TOC) and toxicity removals. Effects of some operating parameters such as the initial pH, oxidant and catalyst concentrations on TOC and toxicity removals were investigated. Almost every method resulted in some degree of TOC and toxicity removal from the pulp mill effluent. However, the TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) resulted in the highest TOC and toxicity removals under alkaline conditions when compared with the other AOPs tested. Approximately, 79.6% TOC and 94% toxicity removals were obtained by the TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis (UV/TiO2) with a titanium dioxide concentration of 0.75gl(-1) at pH 11 within 60min.

Pulp and paper industries are very important for developing the Brazilian economy. During production processes, many effluents are generated with high polluting potential. The objective of this study is to conduct an extensive literature review on the characteristics of effluents and treatment forms adopted by Brazilian mills in this industrial sector. Most consulted studies address raw (without treatment) and secondary (after biological treatment) effluents, considering their main characteristics like pH, chemical and biochemical oxygen demands (COD and BOD, respectively), color, solids, organochlorines, toxicity, estrogenic activity, and phenols. Raw effluents differ considerably in composition, depending on the type of paper produced, the pulping process employed, and other steps, like pulp bleaching. Raw effluent characteristics indicate that this effluent cannot be directly disposed of into water bodies, because it does not comply with federal and state disposal standards. Secondary effluents normally comply with Brazilian legislations, although some studies have reported COD and total phenol concentrations higher than disposal standards, suggesting that additional treatments are necessary. Treated effluent reuse was verified in some Brazilian mills, while its disposal in eucalyptus plantations has been considered a promising alternative for irrigation purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This work suggests a practical solution for recycled paper sludge (RPS) by its conversion into a natural and sustainable resource, which can further be used for water treatment applications, such as dye adsorption, as an alternative for the current non-environmentally friendly waste management practices. Paper production and recycling result in large amounts of recycled paper sludge (RPS) that is currently being disposed of in very costly and unsustainable practices, raising the importance of developing green solutions for waste management. The use of nanocellulose (NC) as the next generation of materials has gained much attention due to its economic potential. However, there are substantial challenges in NC extraction, detection, and quantification methods. In this study, NC was produced from RPS as a means of converting waste into a resource. The process included a short, 30 min ozonation (21 mg O3/g RPS), which allowed a sufficient delignification and facilitated the following hydrolysis step. Among all tested durations, a 4-h hydrolysis with 64% w/w sulfuric acid resulted in the highest NC production. Fluorescent staining by calcofluor white was used for simple and low-cost detection of NC in-situ. Crude NC showed a significant 63% dye uptake of 0.1 ppm acid red 131 within 30 min. Compared to the standard disposal methods of RPS, its utilization for NC production supports the circular economy concept and significantly contributes to the development of cellulose bio-based nanomaterials for water treatment applications. Decentralised wastewater treatment systems, such as constructed wetlands, are becoming increasingly popular these days because they are more economical and cost-effective than conventional plants. The primary objective of this review paper is to determine the number of studies that have been conducted on constructed wetlands, specifically 'free water surface flow constructed wetlands', 'horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands', 'vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands', and 'hybrid constructed wetlands'. In addition, the paper examines the status of research publications on constructed wetlands by country, author, and journal. Based on the review, it has been found that although constructed wetland technology is economical and cost-effective, it is still not among the top 10 effluent treatment methods. Compared to other constructed wetland systems, 'hybrid constructed wetlands' have received minimal attention. Based on the search results, 4639 documents published between 1989 and 2021 have been extracted from the online edition of SCI-EXPANDED, Web of Science. The documents associated with constructed wetlands are divided into eight main document types. Articles and proceedings papers are the most common document type, accounting for 93% of all publications, followed by reviews (4%), meeting abstracts (1.3%), corrections (0.56%), editorial materials (0.38%), news items (0.2%), letters (0.04%), and book reviews (0.02%)., (© 2023. Environmental remediation of toxic organic pollutants on catalytic reduction has gained much attention. The discharge of untreated effluents into the aquatic environment leads to an unwanted change in ecological balance. Recently, effluents of organic dyes and nitroarenes have been identified as a new threat because the unwanted dyes and nitro compounds are toxic to fauna, flora, and humans. Effective and selective removal of organic dye from water systems is a pressing global issue for both drinking water and wastewater purification. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using Duranta erecta leaves' extract as a reducing agent. Silver nanocomposites were prepared supported by cellulose acetate filter paper (Ag@CAF) and titanium dioxide (Ag@TiO 2) via facile biological route. Microscopic properties of the prepared Ag@CAF and Ag@TiO 2 were examined using various spectroscopic techniques such as EDX, XRD and FE-SEM. To check the applicability of synthesized catalysts toward wastewater decontamination, reduction of six models, organic pollutants were investigated such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 2-nitroaniline (2-NA), trinitrophenols (TNP) as well as rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes. The CAF and TiO 2 based Ag nanocatalysts showed multifunctional properties, like outstanding catalytic activity, easy recovery as well as high stability. In addition to being eco-friendly and renewable, the rough and porous structure of CAF and TiO 2 provided surface area for the silver nanoparticles. The dense metal nanoparticles provide possible catalytic sites for the subsequent reduction of organic molecules. In the present paper, Ag@CAF and Ag@TiO 2 demonstrate cheaper, ecofriendly, highly effective, recoverable, stable and universally applicable and advocated that the prepared catalysts would be highly useful in the treatment of wastewater. The textile industries hold an important position in the global industrial arena because of their undeniable contributions to basic human needs satisfaction and to the world economy. These industries are however major consumers of water, dyes and other toxic chemicals. The effluents generated from each processing step comprise substantial quantities of unutilized resources. The effluents if discharged without prior treatment become potential sources of pollution due to their several deleterious effects on the environment. The treatment of heterogeneous textile effluents therefore demands the application of environmentally benign technology with appreciable quality water reclamation potential. These features can be observed in various innovative membrane based techniques. The present review paper thus elucidates the contributions of membrane technology towards textile effluent treatment and unexhausted raw materials recovery. The reuse possibilities of water recovered through membrane based techniques, such as ultrafiltration and nanofiltration in primary dye houses or auxiliary rinse vats have also been explored. Advantages and bottlenecks, such as membrane fouling associated with each of these techniques have also been highlighted. Additionally, several pragmatic models simulating transport mechanism across membranes have been documented. This paper presents an overview of pulp and paper mills (PPM) production processes, the resulting release of wastewater effluent loaded with wide range of pollutants and associated environmental impacts. The review highlighted the different types of functional materials and their modified forms employed as coagulants for pulp and paper mills industries effluent (PPME) treatment that have been intensively studied as a promising strategy for PPM to achieve cleaner and sustainable treatments in accordance with sustainable development goals (SDGs) "6-Clean water and sanitation", "9-Industry, innovation, and infrastructure", and "12-Responsible consumption and production". Standalone coagulation treatment processes are inherently ineffective towards meeting the increasingly stringent discharge requirements, coupled with their higher energy demand, and increased operational and maintenance costs. Owing to the recalcitrant nature of PPME contaminants, this review explored the effectiveness of the coagulation processes for decontamination of PPME. Furthermore, the review provides a state-of-the-art coagulation-based hybrid systems employed for enhanced PPME treatment. The process limitations, influencing factors and optimization techniques are highlighted. The review also highlights how sustained research in the subject area impacts on achieving cleaner production. The review also discusses coagulant classifications and the synergistic, antagonistic and shock load toxic effects of hybrid coagulants on toxicant biodegradation and their associated system efficiency. Moreover, it offers a guide for the development and application of sustainable hybrid-based coagulants for PPME treatment. The findings presented herein provide a vital theoretical foundation for sustainable solutions to improve coagulation-based hybrid systems efficiency and their scale-up towards potential commercialization. The latest tendency data show that the reduction of consumption of office paper, newspapers and magazines will continue. Only packaging and tissue papers maintain or increase their values. The ever-increasing demands on quality and ecology in paper production are currently being solved mostly through a variety of different chemical additives. These facts require alternative and non-traditional methods and technologies of improved environmental friendliness to increase further the efficiency of the processes. Magnetic treatment of water systems is a relatively new method for the optimization of industrial processes. It is technically comfortable and environmentally friendly but it cannot replace the use of the suitable Wet-End chemical additives. Furthermore, it is technologically easy to apply and requires minimum investment and costs, which provides its wide application. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of magnetic treatment on the sack paper furnish behavior in dependence of the quantity of the anionic high-molecular mass modified polyacrylamide at a constant consumption of other system components. The investigations are carried out with 100 % unbleached sulphate softwood pulp, cationic starch, anti-dusting additive, modified rosin sizing agent, Alum and retention additive. The application of the coagulation/flocculation process is very important due to its simplicity in removing turbidity. Due to the disadvantages of using chemical coagulants in water and the lack of sufficient effect of natural materials alone in removing turbidity for proper performance, the simultaneous use of chemical and natural coagulants is the best way to reduce the harmful effects of chemical coagulants in water. In this study, the application of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) as a chemical coagulant and rice starch as a natural coagulant aid to remove turbidity from aqueous solutions was investigated. Effects of the above coagulants on the four main factors, coagulant dose (0-10 mg/L), coagulant adjuvant dose (0-0.1 mg/L), pH (5-9), turbidity (NTU 0-50), and each five levels were assessed using a central composite design (CCD). Under the optimized conditions, the maximum turbidity elimination efficiency was found to be 96.6%. The aim of this research is to study the ability of Cactus leaves to act as a biocoagulants for the removal of lead in water. Different solvents, such as distilled water, NaCl, NaOH, and HCl, were used as chemical activators to extract the active components from the Cactus. The Cactus was utilized as an organic coagulant in five different forms: (i) Cactus juice (CJ); Cactus extract using (ii) distilled water (C-H 2 O); (iii) NaCl at 0.5 M concentration (C-NaCl); (iv) NaOH at 0.05 M concentration (C-NaOH); and (v) HCl at 0.05 M concentration (C-HCl). In order to establish the optimal conditions for the coagulation, this study employed the jar test as an experimental technique and the Box-Behnken design (BBD) as an experimental approach. According to BBD, there are three factors (k = 3), namely pH, biocoagulant dosage, and settling time. The R 2 and R 2 adjusted for all coagulants were close to 100%, confirming the validity of all the mathematical models. The results were significant; the highest lead removal efficiencies were 98.11%, 98.34%, 95.65, 96.19%, and 97.49%, utilizing CJ, C-H 2 O, C-NaCl, C-HCl, and C-NaOH as natural coagulants. Abstract Access to drinking water is one of the greatest global challenges today. In this study, the virus removal properties of mille‐feuille nanocellulose‐based filter papers of varying thicknesses from simulated waste water (SWW) matrix are evaluated for drinking water purification applications. Filtrations of standard SWW dispersions at various total suspended solid (TSS) content are performed, including spiking tests with 30 nm surrogate latex particles and 28 nm ΦX174 bacteriophages. Filter papers of thicknesses 9 and 29 µm are used, and the filtrations are performed at two different operational pressures, i.e., 1 and 3 bar. The presented data using SWW matrix show, for the first time, that a filter paper made from 100% nanocellulose has the capacity to efficiently remove even the smallest viruses, i.e., up to 99.9980–99.9995% efficiency, at industrially relevant flow rates, i.e., 60–500 L m−2 h−1, and low fouling, i.e., V max > 103–104 L m−2. The filter paper presented in this work shows great promise for the development of robust, affordable, and sustainable water purification systems.

Adsorption separation and photocatalytic techniques have emerged as effective methods to eliminate organic dyes from water environment, but the poor recycling of most powdered adsorbents and photocatalysts in aqueous solutions hinders their commercial viability. Herein, we propose an effective and reusable dye-elimination module through the bottom-up self-assembly of photocatalyst (TiO 2 nanoparticles) and adsorbent (Al-fumarate) on a corrugated paper (CP) support. Results show that the hydrophilic and electrostatic interactions between the components ensure the integrity of the whole module in aqueous phase dyes, thereby ensuring its practicality and cyclic stability (10 times). Al-fumarate with a superior specific surface area of (1117.82 m2/g) and porosity (0.47 cm3/g) on the substrate serves to induce and capture the dye molecules, while TiO2 nanoparticles with a wide bandgap trigger a redox reaction to further degrade the organic pollutants. Through the synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalytic strategies, the resultant functional CP-based composite exhibits superior dye-removal performance than other potential composite materials, reaching 98.93% degradation efficiency of congo red (CR) solution (25 mg/L), and 97.91% elimination capacity of methylene blue (MB) solution (20 mg/L). Therefore, the designed dye-elimination module can serve as a convenient, recyclable, and efficient cleaning module in practical wastewater treatment fields. Heavy metal pollution in water bodies is a global concern. The prominent source of metal contamination in aqueous streams and groundwater is wastewater containing heavy metal ions. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in water bodies can have a negative impact on water quality and public health. The most effective way to remove metal contaminants from drinking water is thought to be adsorption. A deacetylated derivative of chitin, chitosan, has a wide range of commercial uses since it is biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable. Due to its exceptional adsorption behavior toward numerous hazardous heavy metals from aqueous solutions, chitosan and its modifications have drawn a lot of interest in recent years. Due to its remarkable adsorption behavior toward a range of dangerous heavy metals, chitosan is a possible agent for eliminating metals from aqueous solutions. The review has focused on the ideas of biosorption, its kinds, architectures, and characteristics, as well as using modified (physically and chemically modified) chitosan, blends, and composites to remove heavy metals from water. Digital Twins, which are virtual representations of physical systems mirroring their behavior, enable real-time monitoring, analysis, and optimization. Understanding and identifying the temporal dependencies included in the multivariate time series data that characterize the behavior of the system are crucial for improving the effectiveness of Digital Twins. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks have been used to represent complex temporal dependencies and identify long-term links in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This paper proposed a Digital Twin temporal dependency technique using LSTM to capture the long-term dependencies in IIoT time series data, estimate the lag between the input and intended output, and handle missing data. Autocorrelation analysis showed the lagged links between variables, aiding in the discovery of temporal dependencies. The system evaluated the LSTM model by providing it with a set of previous observations and asking it to forecast the value at future time steps. We conducted a comparison between our model and six baseline models, utilizing both the Smart Water Treatment (SWaT) and Building Automation Transaction (BATADAL) datasets. Our model's effectiveness in capturing temporal dependencies was assessed through the analysis of the Autocorrelation Function (ACF) and Partial Autocorrelation Function (PACF). The effect on fish reproduction of final treated effluent from a thermomechanical pulp mill in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, was studied using mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), an endemic fish species of the Atlantic coast of North America. A 1997 artificial stream study at the same mill showed a reduction in gonad sizes in mummichog after a 28-day exposure to 3% final treated effluent. In 2005, we reevaluated final treated effluent, and conducted a toxicity source evaluation to identity waste stream sources within the mill that may cause reproductive effects. Relative to reference, no significant differences in gonad size, plasma levels of gonadal sex steroids, egg production, or stage of egg development were observed in fish exposed to 1, 3, 10, 30, and 100% final treated effluent or in-mill waste streams. Unlike the previous study in 1997, these data indicate a low potential for an effect of final effluent on fish reproduction. Since the 1997 study there were no major process changes that could explain the differences in the results. However, there was high variability in gonad size, egg production, and endocrine endpoints measured in the more recent test, which resulted in low power to detect differences. The objective of this study is to prepare a cellulose paper that was impregnated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the purpose of water purification (disinfection and filtration). AgNP papers were prepared by chemical reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) with various concentrations (0.005 M , 0.015 M , 0.03 M , and 0.05 M) using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. Two ratios for NaBH4/AgNO3 of 2:1 and 10:1 were used to show the effect of reduction on the formation and removal efficiencies of AgNPs. AgNP papers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. An acid digestion using HCl acid followed by analyzing the samples in an atomic absorption spectrometer (ASS) was conducted to measure the silver concentration in AgNP papers. TEM images showed that the silver nanoparticle size in the papers varied from 1.3 to 75 nm. Water samples, after filtration through AgNP papers, were analyzed using ASS to measure the silver concentration in the effluent water. AgNP paper antibacterial efficiency ranged from 99 % to 100 % for both reduction ratios. The average silver content in the effluent water for the three replicates ranged from 0 to 0.082 mgL-1 , which meets the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) guideline for drinking water of less than 0.1 mgL-1. Turbidity tests showed that these papers can be usefully used as point-of-use filters as the turbidity reduced to less than 1 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
