Purpose Soft robotics is a burgeoning field owing to its high adaptability and safety in human–machine interaction and unstructured environments. However, the feedback control of soft actuators with flexible sensors is still a challenge.Design/methodology/approach To address this issue, this study proposes an optical fibre-based sensing membrane for the posture measurement of soft pneumatic bending actuators. The major contribution is the development of a flexible sensing membrane with a high sensitivity and repeatability for the feedback control of soft actuators. The characteristics of sensing membrane were analysed. The relationship between wavelength shift and bending curvature was derived. The curvatures of soft actuator were measured at four bending status, and the postures were reconstructed.Findings The results indicate that the measurement error is less than 2.1% of the actual bending curvature. The sensitivity is up to 212.8 pm/m−1, and the signal fluctuation in repeated measurements is negligible. This approach has broad application prospects in soft robotics, because it makes the optical fibre achieve more strength and compatible with soft actuators, thus improving the sensing accuracy, sensitivity and reliability of fibre sensors.Originality/value Different from previous approaches, an optical fibre with FBGs is embedded into a multilayered polyimide film to form a flexible sensing membrane, and the membrane is embedded into a soft pneumatic bending actuator as the smart strain limited layer which is able to measure the posture in real time. This approach makes the optical fibre stronger and compatible with the soft pneumatic bending actuator, and the sensing accuracy, sensitivity and reliability are improved. Soft-robotics for biomedical applications, such as rehabilitation robots, is a field of intense research activity. Different actuation solutions have been proposed in the last decades, involving study and development of soft actuators of different types and materials. The purpose of the paper is to present procedures for an optimized design, and for easy and low cost production and characterization of monolithic PneuNets soft-actuators. An innovative design approach has been developed. The parameterization of the geometry, combined with FEM simulations is the basis for an optimized design of the actuator, as a function of the obtained bending and of the generated forces. Simple and cheap characterization setup and procedures have been identified for the actuator characterization and for simulation results validation. An easy and low-cost fabrication method based on lost wax core obtained through a silicone based mold has been developed for a monolithic PneuNets soft-actuator. The proposed solution performs well in bending, without the need for a strain limiting layer. Underwater manipulation with current robotics technology is a challenging task with significant limits in versatility and robustness terms. Such functionality has tremendous potential covering a broad spectrum of applications, mainly replacing divers performing hazardous jobs. Soft robotics provides an efficient solution for operating in these scenarios and adapting to uncertain environmental conditions. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a simple, low-cost, and easily deployable soft gripper for underwater manipulation. We use modelling and simulation techniques for designing the soft fluidic elastomer actuators that compose the soft gripper and additive manufacturing techniques for rapid test cycles and validation. These techniques allow for a fast redesign depending on the application requirements. The proposal combines materials and fabrication techniques to take advantage of their strengths. The compliance of soft grippers contributes to their great superiority over rigid grippers in grasping irregularly shaped objects and forming soft contact with environments. Due to a relatively small pressure, soft grippers lack the stiffness required for wider applications. Particle jamming has been frequently reported as a means of stiffness control. Unlike previous research using vacuum for particle jamming, this paper proposes a novel passive particle jamming principle that does not need any vacuum power or other control means. The proposed method is by simply patching a silicone rubber soft actuator and a pack (made of strain-limiting membrane) of particles to form an integral gripping finger. The inflation of the soft actuator applies a pressure to the particle pack causing particles inside it to jam. A larger squeezing pressure will result in tighter particle jamming, thus increasing the stiffness of the finger. The stiffness of the finger is controllable as it is proportional to the actuator's air pressure, which has been verified by experiments in this research. The stiffness can increase more than six fold when air pressure changes from 20 to 80 kPa in the experimental studies. Successful soft robot modeling approaches appearing in the recent literature have been based on a variety of distinct theories, including traditional robotic theory, continuum mechanics, and machine learning. Though specific modeling techniques have been developed for and validated against already realized systems, their strengths and weaknesses have not been explicitly compared against each other. In this article, we show how three distinct model structures, a lumped-parameter model, a continuum mechanical model, and a neural network, compare in capturing the gross trends and specific features of the force generation of soft robotic actuators. In particular, we study models for fiber-reinforced elastomeric enclosures (FREEs), which are a popular choice of soft actuator and that are used in several soft articulated systems, including soft manipulators, exoskeletons, grippers, and locomoting soft robots. We generated benchmark data by testing eight FREE samples that spanned broad design and kinematic spaces and compared the models on their ability to predict the loading–deformation relationships of these samples. This comparison shows the predictive capabilities of each model on individual actuators and each model's generalizability across the design space. While the neural net achieved the highest peak performance, the first principles-based models generalized best across all actuator design parameters tested. The results highlight the essential roles of mathematical structure and experimental parameter determination in building high-performing, generalizable soft actuator models with varying effort invested in system identification. The success of a robotic pick and place task depends on the success of the entire procedure: from the grasp planning phase, to the grasp establishment phase, then the lifting and moving phase, and finally the releasing and placing phase. Being able to detect and recover from grasping failures throughout the entire process is therefore a critical requirement for both the robotic manipulator and the gripper, especially when considering the almost inevitable object occlusion by the gripper itself during the robotic pick and place task. With the rapid rising of soft grippers, which rely heavily on their under-actuated body and compliant, open-loop control, less information is available from the gripper for effective overall system control. Tackling on the effectiveness of robotic grasping, this work proposes a hybrid policy by combining visual cues and proprioception of our gripper for the effective failure detection and recovery in grasping, especially using a proprioceptive self-developed soft robotic gripper that is capable of contact sensing. We solved failure handling of robotic pick and place tasks and proposed (1) more accurate pose estimation of a known object by considering the edge-based cost besides the image-based cost; (2) robust object tracking techniques that work even when the object is partially occluded in the system and achieve mean overlap precision up to 80%; (3) contact and contact loss detection between the object and the gripper by analyzing internal pressure signals of our gripper; (4) robust failure handling with the combination of visual cues under partial occlusion and proprioceptive cues from our soft gripper to effectively detect and recover from different accidental grasping failures. The proposed system was experimentally validated with the proprioceptive soft robotic gripper mounted on a collaborative robotic manipulator, and a consumer-grade RGB camera, showing that combining visual cues and proprioception from our soft actuator robotic gripper was effective in improving the detection and recovery from the major grasping failures in different stages for the compliant and robust grasping. Soft actuator technology and its role in robotic manipulation have been rapidly gaining ground. However, less attention has been given to the potential advantages of its application to the agricultural sector, where soft robotics may be a game changer due to its greater adaptability, lower cost and simplicity of manufacture. This article presents a new design approach for soft grippers based on modules that incorporate the concept of bellows and combine it with the versatility and replicability of a 3D printed structure. In this way, the modules can be freely configured to obtain grippers adaptable to crops of different diameters. Furthermore, the definition of a method to determine the soft grippers features is also presented, with the aim of serving as the basis for a future benchmarking study on soft actuators. The experimental tests carried out demonstrated the feasibility and capability of the end-effectors to manipulate various fruits, ensuring a sufficient contact area for the safe handling of the targets and avoiding damaging the products. The soft actuator represents a valuable addition to the robotics research area in last two decades. These actuators provide significant features such as lightweight, softness, high force to weight ratio and the ability to form in different shapes. This article presents a new length model to the single extensor pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA) which is depended on the constructed parameters and the air pressure. On the other hand, the tensile force formula of the contractor actuator has been modified to describe the extension force of the extensor PMA. The parallel structure of four extensor actuators is designed and implemented as continuum arm. The bending behaviour of the proposed arm is illustrated and modelled mathematically. The length model of the single extensor actuator has validated by the comparison between the model and the experiment data and then a neural network (NN) control system is applied to control the elongation of the extensor PMA. Electrohydraulic soft actuators are a promising soft actuation technology for constructing bio-inspired underwater robots owing to the features of this technology such as large deformations and forces, fast responses, and high electromechanical efficiencies. However, this actuation technology requires high voltages, thereby limiting the use of these actuators in water and hindering the development of underwater robots. This paper describes a method for creating bio-inspired underwater robots using silicone-layered electrohydraulic soft actuators. The silicone layer functions as an insulator, enabling the application of high voltages underwater. Moreover, bending and linear actuation can be achieved by applying the silicone layers on one or both sides of the actuator. As a proof of concept, bending and linear actuators with planar dimensions of 20 mm χ 40 mm (length χ width) are fabricated and characterized. Underwater actuation is observed in both types of actuators. The bending actuators exhibit a bending angle and blocked force of 39.0° and 9.6 mN, respectively, at an applied voltage of 10 kV. Further, the linear actuators show a contraction strain and blocked force of 6.6% and 956.1 mN, respectively, at an applied voltage of 10 kV. These actuators are tested at a depth near the surface of water. This ensured that they can operate at least at that depth. The actuators are subsequently used to implement various soft robotic devices such as a ray robot, a fish robot, a water-surface sliding robot, and a gripper. All of the robots exhibit movements as expected; up to 31.2 mm/s (0.91 body length/s) of locomotion speed is achieved by the swimming robots and a retrieve and place task is performed by the gripper. The results obtained in this study indicate the successful implementation of the actuator concept and its high potential for constructing bio-inspired underwater robots and soft robotics applications. Through soft robotics, flexible structures confer an elevated degree of protection and safety in usage, as well as precision and reliability. Using theoretical models while combining different types of soft components opens a wide variety of possibilities for the development of new and better alternatives to rigid robots. Modeling and controlling soft robotic structures is still a challenge and is presented in different ways by the scientific community. The present scientific work aims to combine two of the most popular types of soft actuators, specifically shape memory alloy and pneumatic actuators. The purpose is to observe the interaction between individual entities and the resulting combined dynamics, highlighting the distinctive effects and influences observed in the combined system. An evaluation is conducted from a numerical simulation perspective in the MATLAB environment using representative mathematical models. Soft robots that incorporate elastomeric matrices and flexible materials have gained attention for their unique capabilities, surpassing those of rigid robots, with increased degrees of freedom and movement. Research has highlighted the adaptability, agility, and sensitivity of soft robotic actuators in various applications, including industrial grippers, locomotive robots, wearable assistive devices, and more. It has been demonstrated that bellow-shaped actuators exhibit greater efficiency compared to uniformly shaped fiber-reinforced actuators as they require less input pressure to achieve a comparable range of motion (ROM). Nevertheless, the mathematical quantification of the performance of bellow-based soft fluidic actuators is not well established due to their inherent non-uniform and complex structure, particularly when compared to fiber-reinforced actuators. Furthermore, the design of bellow dimensions is mostly based on intuition without standardized guidance and criteria. This article presents a comprehensive description of the quasi-static analytical modeling process used to analyze bellow-based soft actuators with linear extension. The results of the models are validated through finite element method (FEM) simulations and experimental testing, considering elongation in free space under fluidic pressurization. This study facilitates the determination of optimal geometrical parameters for bellow-based actuators, allowing for effective biomimetic robot design optimization and performance prediction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrates clear advantages over other imaging modalities in neurosurgery with its ability to delineate critical neurovascular structures and cancerous tissue in high‐resolution 3D anatomical roadmaps. However, its application has been limited to interventions performed based on static pre/post‐operative imaging, where errors accrue from stereotactic frame setup, image registration, and brain shift. To leverage the powerful intra‐operative functions of MRI, e.g., instrument tracking, monitoring of physiological changes and tissue temperature in MRI‐guided bilateral stereotactic neurosurgery, a multi‐stage robotic positioner is proposed. The system positions cannula/needle instruments using a lightweight (203 g) and compact (Ø97 × 81 mm) skull‐mounted structure that fits within most standard imaging head coils. With optimized design in soft robotics, the system operates in two stages: i) manual coarse adjustment performed interactively by the surgeon (workspace of ±30°), ii) automatic fine adjustment with precise (<0.2° orientation error), responsive (1.4 Hz bandwidth), and high‐resolution (0.058°) soft robotic positioning. Orientation locking provides sufficient transmission stiffness (4.07 N/mm) for instrument advancement. The system's clinical workflow and accuracy is validated with lab‐based (<0.8 mm) and MRI‐based testing on skull phantoms (<1.7 mm) and a cadaver subject (<2.2 mm). Laminar jamming (LJ) is a method to achieve variable stiffness in robotics that has attracted notable attention because of its simple working principle and potential high stiffness variation. This article reviews the lock/unlock mechanisms of LJ structures. The application of these mechanisms in robotics is discussed, including grippers, continuum robots, wearable robots, robot arms, and more. Furthermore, the performance and limitations of the mechanisms to vary the stiffness of LJ are qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. This performance analysis focuses mainly on the potential of LJ mechanisms to be applied in robot arms with variable stiffness and their potential to attenuate the impact between human beings and robot arms. The modeling of LJ through analytical and finite element methods is described, and their evolution towards design methodologies is discussed. To conclude, the directions and recommendations that should be followed in research on LJ are discussed. These include the improvement of existing lock/unlock mechanisms, the development of new lock/unlock mechanisms, and the development of more control algorithms for robot arms that incorporate LJ structures. The ocean environment has enormous uncertainty due to the influence of complex waves and undercurrents. The human beings are limited in their abilities to detect and utilize marine resources without powerful tools. Soft robots employ soft materials to simplify the complex mechanical structures in rigid robots and adapt their morphology to the environment, making them suitable for performing some challenging tasks in place of manual labor. Due to superior flexible and deformable bodies, underwater soft robots have played significant roles in numerous applications in recent decades. Meanwhile, various technical challenges still need to be tackled to ensure the reliability and practical performance of underwater soft robots in complicated ocean environment. Nowadays, some researchers have developed underwater soft robotic systems based on biomimetics and other disciplines, aiming at comprehensive exploration of ocean and appropriate utilization of unexploited resources. This review presents the recent advances of underwater soft robots in the aspects of intelligent soft materials, fabrication, actuation, locomotion patterns, power storage, sensing, control, and modeling; additionally, the existing challenges and perspectives are analyzed as well. Soft robotics enriches the robotic functionalities by engineering soft materials and electronics toward enhanced compliance, adaptivity, and friendly human machine. This decade has witnessed extraordinary progresses and benefits in scaling down soft robotics to small scale for a wide range of potential and promising applications, including medical and surgical soft robots, wearable and rehabilitation robots, and unconstructed environments exploration. This perspective highlights recent research efforts in miniature soft robotics in a brief and comprehensive way in terms of actuation, powering, designs, fabrication, control, and applications in four sections. Section 2 discusses the key aspects of materials selection and structural designs for small‐scale tethered and untethered actuation and powering, including fluidic actuation, stimuli‐responsive actuation, and soft living biohybrid materials, as well as structural forms from 1D to 3D. Section 3 discusses the advanced manufacturing techniques at small scales for fabricating miniature soft robots, including lithography, mechanical self‐assembly, additive manufacturing, tissue engineering, and other fabrication methods. Section 4 discusses the control systems used in miniature robots, including off‐board/onboard controls and artificial intelligence‐based controls. Section 5 discusses their potential broad applications in healthcare, small‐scale objects manipulating and processing, and environmental monitoring. Rehabilitation robots have become one of the main technical instruments that Treat disorder patients in the biomedical engineering field. The robotic glove for the rehabilitation is basically made of specialized materials which can be designed to help the post-stroke patients. In this paper, a review of the different types of robotic glove for Rehabilitation have been discussed and summarized. This study reviews a different mechanical system of robotic gloves in previous years. The selected studies have been classified into four types according to the Mechanical Design: The first type is a tendon-driven robotic glove. The second type of robotic glove works with a soft actuator as a pneumatic which is operated by air pressure that passes through a plastic pipe, pressure valves, and air compressor. The third type is the exoskeleton robotic gloves this type consists of a wearable mechanical design that can used a finger-based sensor to measure grip strength or is used in interactive video applications. And the fourth type is the robotic glove with a liner actuator this type consists of a tape placed on the fingers and connected to linear actuators to open and close the fingers during the rehabilitation process. Soft pneumatic biomimetic robotic systems excel at the specific application they are designed for, often to interact or navigate unstructured environments safely. However, redeployment to new purposes requires substantial resources, from redesign to revalidation. Despite most pneumatic artificial muscles surpassing the power and contraction performance of natural muscles, natural muscles largely remain unmatched in terms of their versatility and complex performance. This is likely due to artificial muscle's low effective strain and high radial expansion, limiting parallel operating efficiencies. To address these challenges, a class of compact versatile pneumatic actuators, called multilayer artificial muscle (MAM), that are capable of deployment to different applications through configurable modularity, is presented. The MAMs are biomimetically inspired by the sarcomere, the building block for natural muscle architecture. Similarly, MAM can extend and contract as well as be rearranged to mimic muscle‐like actions and functions, such as a caterpillar locomotion robot and an entire robotic arm. The MAMs are fabricated through multilayer, multimaterial, low‐cost additive manufacturing, which offers certain advantages such as higher extension, contraction force, and durability. Soft robotics systems are currently under development using ionic electroactive polymers (i‐EAP) as soft actuators for the human‐machine interface. However, this endeavor has been impeded by the dilemma of reconciling the competing demands of force and strain in i‐EAP actuators. Here, the authors present a novel design called "ions‐silica percolated ionic dielectric elastomer (i‐SPIDER)", which exhibits ionic liquid‐confined silica microstructures that effectively resolve the chronic issue of conventional i‐EAP actuators. The i‐SPIDER actuator demonstrates remarkable electromechanical conversion capacity at low voltage, thanks to improved ion accumulation facilitated by interpreting electrode polarization at the electrolyte‐electrode interface. This approach concurrently enhances both strain (by approximately 1.52%) and force (by roughly 1.06 mN) even at low Young's modulus (merely 5.9 MPa). Additionally, by demonstrating arachnid‐inspired soft robots endowed with user‐desired tasks through control of various form factors, the development of soft robots using the i‐SPIDER that can concomitantly enhance strain and force holds promise as a compelling avenue for ushering in the next generation of miniaturized, low‐powered soft robotics. Reprogrammable soft matter brings flexibility to soft robots so that they can display various motions, which is flourishing in soft robotics. However, the reprogramming of photoresponsive materials used in soft robots is time-consuming using existing methods. In this study, we promote a strategy for rapid reprogramming via switchable photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE). The liquid crystalline elastomers doped with semiconductor bismuth compounds (Bi-LCE) used in this work exhibited large photothermal actuation with over 35% shrinkage in 5 s at high PCE state, which demonstrated little deformation at low PCE state. Furthermore, the material was capable of being reprogrammed up to 10 times, with only 20 min required for one PCE reversible switch. Based on this switchable PCE effect, the same Bi-LCE film displayed various shape changes through different programmable pattern. Additionally, a reprogrammable hollow tube made of PCE reprogrammable materials could tune the diameter, cross-section configuration, and surface morphology, which was crucial for microfluidics field. Due to the rapid advancements in the human–robot interface, soft robotics is getting attention in recent times. Conventional robots or robotic devices are not compatible with being used for internal application of the patient's body even outer applications are also inhibited due to lack of flexibility, heavyweight, and less motion creation. As physically challenged persons require different degree of comfortability and flexibility in their everyday work or therapy, textile-based soft robots have diverse advantages including safety, easiness to use, and proper deformability to assist them. Any robotic system for rehabilitation of the impaired patients is composed of three different units of sensing, actuation, and controlling. The accommodation of these three units in conventional robotic systems makes the device heavy, rigid, and mechanically less functional. Textile materials have a higher level of inherent and programmable properties regarding physical and chemical structure, weight, durability, and deformability. Leveraging textile structures, many efforts have already been done for the fabrication of soft robots. This review will discuss the present scenario of textile-based soft actuators that are made to assist physically challenged individuals. Materials, fabrication methods, outcomes of the devices, requirement specific applications of soft robotics for physically challenged individuals have been discussed. Owing to their small size, microrobots have many potential applications. In addition, four-dimensional (4D) printing facilitates reversible shape transformation over time or upon the application of stimuli. By combining the concept of microrobots and 4D printing, it may be possible to realize more sophisticated next-generation microrobot designs that can be actuated by applying various stimuli, and also demonstrates profound implications for various applications, including drug delivery, cells delivery, soft robotics, object release and others. Herein, recent advances in 4D-printed microrobots are reviewed, including strategies for facilitating shape transformations, diverse types of external stimuli, and medical and nonmedical applications of microrobots. Soft robotics enables various applications in certain environments where conventional rigid robotics cannot deliver the same performance due to their form factor and stiffness. Animals use their soft external organs to carry out activities in response to challenging natural environments efficiently. The objective of soft robots is to provide biologically inspired abilities and enable adaptable and flexible interactions with complex objects and surroundings. Recent advances in stimuli-responsive soft robot technology have heavily used polymer-based multifunctional materials. Soft robots with incredibly sophisticated multi-mechanical, electrical, or optical capabilities have demonstrated the ability to modify their shape intelligently in response to external stimuli, such as light, electricity, thermal gradient, and magnetic fields. This short review covers recent advances in scientific techniques for incorporating multifunctional polymeric materials into stimuli-responsive bioinspired soft robots and their applications. We also discuss how biological inspiration and environmental effects can provide a viable viewpoint for bioinspired design in the innovative field of soft robotics. In recent years, the emergence of low-dimensional carbon-based materials, such as carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, together with the advances in materials science, have greatly enriched the variety of flexible and stretchable electronic devices. Compared with conventional rigid devices, these soft robotic sensors and actuators exhibit remarkable advantages in terms of their biocompatibility, portability, power efficiency, and wearability, thus creating myriad possibilities of novel wearable and implantable tactile sensors, as well as micro-/nano-soft actuation systems. Interestingly, not only are carbon-based materials ideal constituents for photodetectors, gas, thermal, triboelectric sensors due to their geometry and extraordinary sensitivity to various external stimuli, but they also provide significantly more precise manipulation of the actuators than conventional centimeter-scale pneumatic and hydraulic robotic actuators, at a molecular level. In this review, we summarize recent progress on state-of-the-art flexible and stretchable carbon-based sensors and actuators that have creatively added to the development of biomedicine, nanoscience, materials science, as well as soft robotics. Soft robots have advantages in terms of safety, softness, and compliance compared to traditional robotic systems. However, fluid-driven soft actuators, often employed in soft robots, require a corresponding number of bulky pressure supplies/valves to drive. Here, we consider a valve that can control the flow without mechanical moving parts for simplifying the driving system of soft actuators. We developed a system comprising a pump, a switching valve, and two latex balloons to demonstrate the feasibility of introducing a fluid valve into soft robotics. As the valve, which makes use of the Coanda effect, can switch the flow between two outlets when the pressure difference between the outlets is 3 kPa, we employed a latex balloon connected to each outlet. The system can control the expansion of each balloon by switching the flow from the pump. The experimental results proved that the system could actuate each balloon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ultimate goal of the advancements in bioelectronics and robotics is the creation of seamless interfaces between artificial devices and biological structures. Current efforts in this area have been focused on designing biocompatible, mechanically compliant, and minimally invasive electronic and robotic systems for a range of applications, such as motor control and sweat sensing. The purposeful design of bioelectronic and robotic systems using the principles of biomimicry enables the creation of biocompatible and life‐like machines and electronics. The success of such approaches relies on the new development and applications of soft materials, as well as methods of actuation and sensing that are inspired, either by composition, function, or properties, of the naturally occurring organisms. A combination of rigid structural components, soft actuators, and flexible sensors can enable the integration of such devices with biological organisms and eventually human users. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in biomimetic soft robotics and bioelectronics. We describe the soft robotic fabrication toolbox and modern solution in bioelectronics that, in our opinion, will enable the fusion of these fields by creating robotic bioelectronic systems. High compliance and muscle-alike soft robotic grippers have shown promising performance in addressing the challenges in traditional rigid grippers. Nevertheless, a lack of control feedback (gasping speed and contact force) in a grasping operation can result in undetectable slipping and false positioning. In this study, a pneumatically driven and self-powered soft robotic gripper that can recognize the grabbed object is reported. We integrated pressure (P-TENG) and bend (B-TENG) triboelectric sensors into a soft robotic gripper to transduce the features of gripped objects in a pick-and-place operation. Both the P-TENG and B-TENG sensors are fabricated using a porous structure made of soft Ecoflex and Euthethic Gallium-Indium nanocomposite (Eco-EGaIn). The output voltage of this porous setup has been improved by 63%, as compared to the non-porous structure. The developed soft gripper successfully recognizes three different objects, cylinder, cuboid, and pyramid prism, with a good accuracy of 91.67% and has shown its potential to be beneficial in the assembly lines, sorting, VR/AR application, and education training. In recent years, conventional model-based motion control has become more challenging owing to the continuously increasing complexity of areas in which robots must operate and navigate. A promising approach for solving this issue is by employing interaction-based robotics, which includes behavior-based robotics, morphological computations, and soft robotics that generate control and computation functions based on interactions between the robot body and environment. These control strategies, which incorporate the diverse dynamics of the environment to generate control and computation functions, may alleviate the limitations imposed by the finite physical and computational resources of conventional robots. However, current interaction-based robots can only perform a limited number of actions compared with conventional robots. To increase the diversity of behaviors generated from body–environment interactions, a robotic body design methodology that can generate appropriate behaviors depending on the various situations and environmental stimuli that arise from them is necessitated. Electronics-free robotics is reviewed herein as a paradigm for designing robots with control and computing functions in each part of the body. In electronics-free robotics, instead of using electrical sensors or computers, a control system is constructed based on only mechanical or chemical reactions. Robotic bodies fabricated using this approach do not require bulky electrical wiring or peripheral circuits and can perform control and computational functions by obtaining energy from a central source. Therefore, by distributing these electronics-free controllers throughout the body, we hope to design autonomous and highly decentralized robotic bodies than can generate various behaviors in response to environmental stimuli. This new paradigm of designing and controlling robot bodies can enable realization of completely electronics-free robots as well as expand the range of conventional electronics-based robot designs. Research field of soft robotics develops exponentially since it opens up many imaginations, such as human‐interactive robot, wearable robots, and transformable robots in unpredictable environments. Wet environments such as sea and in vivo represent dynamic and unstructured environments that adaptive soft robots can reach their potentials. Recent progresses in soft hybridized robotics performing tasks underwater herald a diversity of interactive soft robotics in wet environments. Here, the development of soft robots in wet environments is reviewed. The authors recapitulate biomimetic inspirations, recent advances in soft matter materials, representative fabrication techniques, system integration, and exemplary functions for underwater soft robots. Widely used robot systems have a rigid base structure that limits the interaction with their environment. Due to the inflexible attachment points, conventional robotic structures can only manipulate objects with their special gripping system. It can be difficult for these systems to grasp objects with different shapes, handle complex surfaces or navigating in a heavily crowded environment. Many of the species observed in nature, like octopuses are able to perform complex sequences of movements using their soft-structured limbs, which are made up entirely of muscle and connective tissue. Researchers have been inspired to design and build robots based on these soft biological systems. Thanks to the soft structure and high degree of freedom, these soft robots can be used for tasks that would be extremely difficult to perform with traditional robot manipulators. This article discusses the capabilities and usability of soft robots, reviews the state of the art, and outlines the challenges in designing, modelling, manufacturing, and controlling. On the contrary, textile fabrics can also be integrated in robotics. Textile-based laminates can be applied as actuators; spacer fabrics can prevent robot arms from hurting men or autonomous robots from damaging themselves on difficult terrain; or as flexible sensors in soft and traditional robotics. Here, we give an overview of recent applications of textile materials in robotics and point out possible future utilization of diverse textile materials in this emerging field of research and development with increasing importance for industrial processes as well as services. The history of robotics began with fluid power around 1960, at which time, all robots were driven by pneumatic or hydraulic actuators. Subsequently, in the mid-1980s, electromagnetic motors replaced the mainstay of robot actuators, while fluid-powered robots almost completely disappeared. However, in recent years, by utilizing the unique features of flexibility and lightness of pneumatics and the high power and robustness of hydraulics, several robots with unique characteristics, which cannot be realized with conventional electrical motors, are being developed. The author has developed various types of new fluid power actuators, including pneumatic and hydraulic types, to realize novel robots with unique features. This paper reviews the author's previous works on fluid power actuators and robots driven by them. Furthermore, it presents prospective robots that can be realized using fluid power. Origami structures held promise for their flexibility, simultaneous responsiveness, and adaptability, yet they are vulnerable due to the hygroscopic property when exposed to the humid environments. However, the patterning of hydrophobic material along the design enhances the controllability of paper for self-folding to robotics locomotion. The capillary action of sprayed water molecules is localized through the number or sizes of hydrophilic channels defined by the printed wax patterns resulting in large deformation to form various 3D geometries. The patterned paper performed folding actuation with water and unfolding behavior with evaporation without being mechanically manipulated by external forces or moments. The paper actuators further enable the sequential self-folding along the multiple hinges for the cube and diamond structures. Advances in soft robotics for practical applications, the utilization of different swelling/shrinking properties with water and kirigami-inspired programmable structures interact with the lightweight and non-planar objects. The anisotropic properties of paper in response to water spraying combined with folding/unfolding deformations permit the fold-to-pop-up robots for biomimetic locomotion on the plane or water. Soft robotics is an emerging technology that has shown considerable promise in deep-sea marine biological applications. It is particularly useful in facilitating delicate interactions with fragile marine organisms. This study describes the shipboard design, 3D printing and integration of custom soft robotic manipulators for investigating and interacting with deep-sea organisms. Soft robotics manipulators were tested down to 2224m via a Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV) in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) and facilitated the study of a diverse suite of soft-bodied and fragile marine life. Instantaneous feedback from the ROV pilots and biologists allowed for rapid re-design, such as adding “fingernails”, and re-fabrication of soft manipulators at sea. These were then used to successfully grasp fragile deep-sea animals, such as goniasterids and holothurians, which have historically been difficult to collect undamaged via rigid mechanical arms and suction samplers. As scientific expeditions to remote parts of the world are costly and lengthy to plan, on-the-fly soft robot actuator printing offers a real-time solution to better understand and interact with delicate deep-sea environments, soft-bodied, brittle, and otherwise fragile organisms. Conventionally, engineers have employed rigid materials to fabricate precise, predictable robotic systems, which are easily modelled as rigid members connected at discrete joints. Natural systems, however, often match or exceed the performance of robotic systems with deformable bodies. Cephalopods, for example, achieve amazing feats of manipulation and locomotion without a skeleton; even vertebrates such as humans achieve dynamic gaits by storing elastic energy in their compliant bones and soft tissues. Inspired by nature, engineers have begun to explore the design and control of soft-bodied robots composed of compliant materials.
