Journalism researchers and publishers worldwide have begun focusing their attention on understanding and encouraging "engagement." As more newsrooms took up engagement, the issues of journalists have begun to shift from whether to encourage more audience interaction in news to how much audience interaction is desirable, and what kind of engagement should be pursued in the first place. This study explores the ways in which two distinct conceptualizations of interactions between journalists and the audience evolved ("audience engagement" and "engaged journalism") and the normative ideals underlying each by performing a qualitative analysis of articles written by journalism practitioners, funders, and researchers within public-facing outlets. The goal is to understand (1) the ways in which journalism as a field conceptualizes the risks and benefits of engagement and (2) the normative assumptions inherent within these conceptualizations. We conclude that the evolution of engagement offers scholars a template by which they can study the interlinked construction of cognitive roles and occupational norms to better understand the motivations, goals, and underlying assumptions of new types of journalism. The world of book publishing is currently undergoing a major paradigm shift, but this was already fully under way in the 1990s. In the German novel Abstieg vom Zauberberg, published in 1997 by an anonymous author under the pseudonym Jens Walther, we are given an excellent insider view of the concrete situation within literary publishing houses and how they operate behind the scene and in public to secure the best possible titles and to fend off manuscripts that appear to be trivial literature. The author proves to be highly educated in the history of German and western literature at large and also demonstrates great expertise regarding book fairs, book reviews, and book prizes, framing all this by a somewhat twisted love story involving a young author, Anna Becker, and two men, first the young Johannes Rieger, then his father Helmut Rieger, both representing the fictional publishing house Engsfeld. The author reflects on the importance of communicating science to the lay people. He states that it is a necessity that scientific discoveries and their implications should be communicated to all the people because they have to know the true from the false, the competent from the bungler, and the plausible from the impossible. He asserts that the scientist has the responsibility of helping the reporters and interpreters to explain the facts discovered and their implications so that the common man can see the promised goals beyond.

The worldwide scale of printed media is decreasing. This trend can also be seen amongst the dailies in the Czech Republic. In reaction to this tendency journalists are increasingly engaging in the entertainment aspects of journalism. So-called 'infotainment' is now firmly established in journalism. One of the most frequently and at the same time most effective infotainment strategies used in media is the application of verbal (and nonverbal) means of comedy and humor. The study presents an overview of the most frequent and thus the most typical verbal means of comedy and humor in current Czech periodicals based on the analyses of three representative Czech daily newspapers and one tabloid. The conclusion comprises, on the basis of the comparison of frequency, forms and the means of comedy and humor used sixteen years ago and at present, the development of verbal comedy and humor in Czech journalism. The author comments on the science-versus-press controversy, whereby scientists are conceived to be bad copy, inaccessible, unintelligible and uncooperative, or the press being thought to inaccurately sensationalize scientists and misinterpret their discoveries in the interest of a good story. He cites the Chicago Conference on Nuclear Physics and the Conference on Solar Energy at the University of Wisconsin where newspaper reporters were not allowed to attend the meeting. The press stated that the scientists are the first to denounce secrecy but the first thing they do is to close the doors to the press. He further talks about the foundation of the lack of cooperation by scientists to science reporters.

The article recounts the life and work of publisher and poet Trevor Reeves. Information on the various books published by Caveman Press during the 1970s that reflected the diversity of poetry sources and directions undertaken by Reeves, including his self-awareness of his social environment, is presented. Several changes that established the second half of the career of Reeves as a periodical editor are highlighted.

This article analyses developments in Norwegian magazine journalism in the last decade, focusing on the broad and varied spectrum of magazines targeting women. The analysis is based on multiple methods and data sources, aiming to connect the production and reception of magazine journalism to the texts of magazines. This article will identify and discuss five key trends: fragmentation, digitalization, Nordic inspiration, redefinition of the political and beautification. Information about the 7th International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publications held in Chicago, Illinois is presented. The event was attended by more than 500 medical journal editors, publishers and researchers worldwide. The conference also featured plenary lectures from eminent editors and various speakers regarding ethical issues and misconduct, publication bias, and trial registration in medical journalism.

The author argues that English journalist W. T. Stead's notion of the spirit body was an etheric version of the self that divorced personality from the body and permitted its survival after death. He explains that said notion meant that the dead lived on in a detectable network that might be accessed through a living medium. He examines the strange correspondences between Stead and writer Henry James.

The author analyzes English journalist W. T. Stead's series "Penny Poets," situating it as a mixture of the commercial and the campaigning. He first offers a detailed bibliographical account of the series and its context followed by setting that empirical account of the Penny Poets as material texts within a larger, literary historical inquiry into the canon created by and in Stead's series.

The article explores some of the contradictions that emerged between W. T. Stead, an English newspaper editor who is a pioneer of investigative journalism during the Victorian era, as the representation, Stead the journalist and Stead the man. They note that Stead offered individual women real support, providing advice, financial assistance and jobs on equal terms with men. They add that Stead supported a range of women's causes in his publications, often providing much needed publicity.

This article rethinks the concept of news in liquid, convergent and mediated society. It evidences that the new media ecology unbalances the classic production- reception binomial of news vertically mediated by journalists and transfers the tonic for the circulation. It is no longer enough just publishing: news must be filtered by interactors, reelaborated, recommended for social networks of digital platforms. Throughout the process, the news gets a double status: the statement in its original place of posting and flows established between the plural spaces that fall within the circuit of online news. The article offers information on a survey conducted by the authors related to attitude of journal editors towards publication of ethically uncertain research. Editor-in-chief of each of the 103 English-language journals from the 2005 Abridged Index Medicus list were sent the survey by email. It mentions that 18 percent of them had published ethically uncertain research in the last 10 years. 85 percent stated that they would reject such a research on ethical grounds alone.

This article presents the analysis and the results of the second phase of the research "Quality standards of the information published in national and local media, regarding security in Bogotá". This research was developed by the Media Observatory of the Communication and Language School of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, with the sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota. After using the technique of content analysis over a corpus of more than a thousand news pieces (recovered in a period of time between May 20 and November 20, 2008) the results of the processed data were compared to the perceptions and the reports of 28 judicial reporters and editorialists of 10 local and national media. A major bottleneck in the time required to publish a scientific or scholarly paper is the speed with which reviews by peers are returned to journals. Peer review is a reciprocal altruistic system in which each individual may perform every task--editors, reviewers, and authors--at different times. Journals have no way to coerce reviewers to return their critiques faster. To greatly shorten the time to publication, all actors in this altruistic network should abide by the Golden Rule of Reviewing: review for others as you would have others review for you. Say yes to reviewing whenever your duties and schedule allow; provide a thorough, fair, and constructive critique of the work; and do it at your first opportunity regardless of the deadline. The former Director of the Frankfurt Book Fair presents a concise history of what today is the largest international book fair including the key publishers, booksellers and authors who are part of the amazing global event. The interesting initial development and challenges of post World War II and related relocated German publishers are described. The initial efforts as a national book fair from 1949 to the present international event are traced. The turmoil and confrontation of political groups during the 1968 and subsequent years with actions taken was a difficult period for the fair but it survived to grow into a global event. Ambiente e Água - An International Journal of Applied Science just published its eighth issue, completing the third number of its third volume with all issues published on time. The number of submissions increased significantly and as a result the number of published papers. Eleven articles were published in this issue. The geographic and institutional origin of authors also increased not only throughout Brazil, but also from abroad. First authors came from 28 different institutions in Brazil from all over the country and from 5 different institutions from abroad. The average number of weekly visitors increased from ~ 300 per week in 2007 to ~ 700 recently. The international interest in the journal is clearly evidenced by the number of countries and geographical coverage of readers. One significant improvement was the increased number of qualified peer reviewers registered for article's evaluation, as listed in this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the ethical and practical questions which confront journalists as they strive to fulfill their role of informing the public. According to the author, the failures of the mass media in the Duke lacrosse case were simply the result of excessive political correctness which also affected the problems that plague the journalistic coverage. The author warns that without equal doses of objectivity, skepticism, and humility by journalists, reporting of complex issues is too easily reduced to a form of simplistic storytelling that masks the truth.

In this paper, I offer advice to new researchers on how to conduct a successful research project in educational psychology. I break the research task into three parts: creating a research question, creating a research methodology, and creating a dissemination plan. The criteria for creating a research question include personal interest, educational relevance, theoretical grounding, and empirical testability. The criteria for creating a research methodology include that the method provides relevant evidence, is feasible, and is as simple as possible. The criteria for creating a dissemination plan include basing your argument on research evidence, presenting your argument in coherent style that links your main findings with theoretical and practical implications, and seeking the best possible peer-reviewed publication venue. Many have questioned the reliability and accuracy of Wikipedia. Here a different issue, but one closely related: how broad is the coverage of Wikipedia? Differences in the interests and attention of Wikipedia’s editors mean that some areas, in the traditional sciences, for example, are better covered than others. Two approaches to measuring this coverage are presented. The first maps the distribution of topics on Wikipedia to the distribution of books published. The second compares the distribution of topics in three established, field-specific academic encyclopedias to the articles found in Wikipedia. Unlike the top-down construction of traditional encyclopedias, Wikipedia’s topical coverage is driven by the interests of its users, and as a result, the reliability and completeness of Wikipedia is likely to be different depending on the subject-area of the article. This article reports on the contributions of William Makepeace Thackeray to the "Times." Much of Thackeray's work has been represented as his complete works yet it is only a small representation of his contribution to the "Times." He wrote five contributions a month to the "Times" which was then the source of his livelihood. Among the contributions listed are "The Annuals," "Duchess of Marlborough's Private Correspondence" and "Rambles in the Footsteps of Don Quixote."

The article highlights the 2005-2006 report of the editors of the "American Journal of Agricultural Economics (AJAE)." There has been a transition to a new editorial team since January 1, 2006, having the responsibility for volumes 89 and 90 for 2007 and 2008. The collaborative and multi-university editorial process that was initiated with volume 80 is continued. Since March 2004, the AJAE employs a fully electronic editorial management system. Instructions and the online submission portal are accessible to authors and referees through the journal's Web site.

To increase its visibility among the general public and the international scientific community, the "Croatian Medical Journal" ("CMJ"), a small journal from the so-called scientific periphery, introduced a media strategy of sending press releases to journalists and email notices to the newsdesk of a high-profile international scientific journal. Subsequent news coverage and the positive response of journalists show that press releases and targeted email notices increased international visibility of articles published in a small scientific journal, and improved communication with journalists as mediators of scientific information to the general public. The article focuses on the close-knit community around the Communist writers and intellectuals of the Writers' International and "Left Review" from 1934 to 1938. The production of leftist journalism and literature became crucial in the 1930s due to domestic and international crises. Communist and socialist writers took advantage of a burgeoning community of publications that were often produced by a group of writers and editors.

To meet the highest standards of scholarship, liberatory editorial practices need to transition from static peer reviewed to dynamic peer reviewing models that de-couple publication from defective pre-publication peer review requirements, and engage in alternative peer review practices that remain open to all those wishing to review a manuscript at any time in the post-publication phase--encouraging expanded and deepening exchanges among scholars, authors and readers alike.
