Highlights • The alkaline – HC miscanthus fibers lignin content was decreased by 41.54% • Pulp fiber shape characteristics were negatively influenced due to cavitation force. • Results could verify the efficacy of alkaline - HC pretreatment as a delignification method. • The alkaline – HC process displayed similar results with other conventional methods. • Miscanthus grass fibers could potentially substitute hardwood fibers in pulp blends., One way of satisfying increased market demand and simultaneously achieving a reduced environmental load in the industrial paper production is the use of fibrous agricultural residues. The aims of this study were i) to investigate the effect of alkaline – hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) pre-treatments on the delignification of Miscanthus × giganteus stalks (MGS) and ii) establishing the suitability of MGS as feedstock and their exploitation in pulp and paper manufacturing. It was demonstrated that the proposed treatment is an efficient delignification method for the non-wood fiber sources, such as miscanthus. A significant outcome of this work was the observation that HC treatment preserved the fibres lengths and surface quality of raw MGS, but at the same time increased the amount of kinked and curled fibers present in cavitated miscanthus fibers. The average miscanthus fiber length was found to be relatively short at 0.45 (±0.28) mm, while the slenderness ratio, the flexibility coefficient and Runkel ratio values were calculated to be 28.13, 38.16 and 1.62, respectively. The estimated physical properties of MGS pulp hand-sheets were 24.88 (±3.09) N m g−1 as the tensile index, 0.92 (±0.06) kPa m2 g−1 as the burst index and 4.0 (±0.37) mN m2 g−1 as the tear index. Overall the current work demonstrated effective use of hydrodynamic cavitation for improving the processing in pulp and paper manufacturing.

Screen-printed membrane sensors based on the use of paper and ceramic substrates are fabricated, characterized, and used for rapid batch and continuous monitoring of CrIII in the form of CrO42&minus, in some industrial products and wastewater samples. Strips of paper and ceramic platforms (15 &times, 5 mm) were covered with conductive carbon paint and then modified with polyaniline (PANI) film, to act as an ion-to-electron transducer, followed by a drop casting of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) Rhodamine-B chromate membrane as a recognition sensing material. In a 5.0 mmol L&minus, 1 Trizma buffer solution of pH ~8, the fabricated paper and ceramic based membrane sensors exhibited a near Nernstian response for CrVI ion with slopes of &minus, 29.7 &plusmn, 0.5 and &minus, 28.6 &plusmn, 0.3 mV decade&minus, 1, limit of detection 2.5 &times, 10&minus, 5 and 2.4 &times, 6 mol L&minus, 1 (1.3&ndash, 0.12 &micro, g mL&minus, 1), and linear concentration range 7.5 &times, 3&ndash, 5.0 &times, 5 and 7.5 &times, 1.0 &times, 5 mol L&minus, 1 (390-0.5 &micro, 1), respectively. Both sensors exhibited fast and stable potentiometric response, excellent reproducibility, and good selectivity with respect to a number of common foreign inorganic species. Impedance spectroscopy and chronopotentiometry data revealed a small resistance and a larger double layer capacitance due to the presence of the intermediate polyaniline (PAN) conductive layer. Furthermore, the formation of a water layer between the ion selective membrane (ISM) and the underlying conductor polymer and between the conducting polymer and the carbon conducting surface was greatly reduced. The developed disposable solid-contact potentiometric sensors offer the advantages of simple design, long term potential stability, flexibility, miniaturization ability, short conditioning time, and cost effectiveness that enable mass production. The sensors were successfully used for static and hydrodynamic measurements of total chromium in some leather tanning wastewater and nickel-chrome alloy samples. The results compare favorably with data obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry.

This paper reviews key advances in understanding the hydrodynamics of the forming section of papermaking during the years 1950 to 2000. Over this period papermaking advanced from rather slow-speed Fourdrinier machines to modern high-speed twin-wire formers. The advances are described in the context of technical problems faced at the time to increase machine speeds and improve paper properties. The scientific work and advances in machine design contributed greatly to the marvel of modern papermaking, which now includes machines 10 m wide operating at speeds over 100 km/h.

We present an innovative, simple, and versatile hydrophobic valve enabling all-important complex liquid manipulations on self-powered, channel-based microfluidic devices and as such being extremely valuable for the design of highly demanding point-of-care (POC) platforms. The presented hydrophobic valve is made of filter paper treated with a fluorinated compound (i.e., Aquapel) and shows both superhydrophobic properties (contact angle up to 155°) and high resistance to liquid pressure (up to 9 kPa), while retaining gas permeability and utter fabrication simplicity. Whereas this valve can be integrated in any channel-based system and can be used both as a vent, to delay liquid displacement on chip, or as a barrier, to stop the liquid flow in a certain direction, in this work we demonstrate some of its capacities by combining it with our in house developed self-powered SIMPLE and iSIMPLE platforms. First, we integrated it with the infusion iSIMPLE pump, thus generating completely fail-proof activation regardless of how the operator is actuating the system. Second, we used hydrophobic valves as both barrier and vent in the same microfluidic chip, which allowed the combination of two SIMPLE pumps for splitting one sample in two parallel channels. This attribute is fundamental for achieving multiplex analysis on completely autonomous microfluidic platforms. Finally, we achieved an unprecedented liquid manipulation for a self-powered microfluidic platform, namely, shuttling of liquid, after a single user activation by combining for the first time SIMPLE and iSIMPLE with the developed hydrophobic vent and barrier, all in a single chip. Significance Artificial muscles are flexible actuators with capabilities similar to, or even beyond, natural muscles. They have been widely used in many applications as alternatives to more traditional rigid electromagnetic motors. Numerous studies focus on rapid design and low-cost fabrication of artificial muscles with customized performances. Here, we present an architecture for fluidic artificial muscles with unprecedented performance-to-cost ratio. These artificial muscles can be programed to produce not only a single contraction but also complex multiaxial actuation, and even controllable motion with multiple degrees of freedom. Moreover, a wide variety of materials and fabrication processes can be used to build the artificial muscles with other functions beyond basic actuation., Artificial muscles hold promise for safe and powerful actuation for myriad common machines and robots. However, the design, fabrication, and implementation of artificial muscles are often limited by their material costs, operating principle, scalability, and single-degree-of-freedom contractile actuation motions. Here we propose an architecture for fluid-driven origami-inspired artificial muscles. This concept requires only a compressible skeleton, a flexible skin, and a fluid medium. A mechanical model is developed to explain the interaction of the three components. A fabrication method is introduced to rapidly manufacture low-cost artificial muscles using various materials and at multiple scales. The artificial muscles can be programed to achieve multiaxial motions including contraction, bending, and torsion. These motions can be aggregated into systems with multiple degrees of freedom, which are able to produce controllable motions at different rates. Our artificial muscles can be driven by fluids at negative pressures (relative to ambient). This feature makes actuation safer than most other fluidic artificial muscles that operate with positive pressures. Experiments reveal that these muscles can contract over 90% of their initial lengths, generate stresses of ∼600 kPa, and produce peak power densities over 2 kW/kg—all equal to, or in excess of, natural muscle. This architecture for artificial muscles opens the door to rapid design and low-cost fabrication of actuation systems for numerous applications at multiple scales, ranging from miniature medical devices to wearable robotic exoskeletons to large deployable structures for space exploration.

Automation is being accepted for control systems onboard ships in view of the shortage of skilled manpower in marine sector. Control theory has long been applied to maneuvering problems and at present this trend is continuing at an increased rate. This is for speed control, course control and path keeping. Heading control and course keeping are very important for surface ships while they enter shallow water regions. A typical situation is the entry of a large commercial ship into the harbour basin. The ship faces a sudden change of forces and moments around it due to the change in the hydrodynamics. The Master of the ship regulates the speed while entering the basin. Forces and moments, due to the hydrodynamic flow around the moving hull, are balanced by the rudder behind it. The feed back from the heading angle is taken and the gain in the control system prompts the steering gear to turn the rudder. The conventional control algorithm based on PID is attempted in the first part of the paper and case studies are shown for a Mariner class ship whose hydrodynamic derivatives are known. Displacement, velocities and accelerations are determined for short duration from the simulation of a voyage in calm water. The proposed system can be implemented into autopilot systems. The codes developed in MATLAB can accommodate wind and wave forces as well. The simulation is of a general type and can be used for other vessels with a change in the constants of P (Proportional), I (Integral) and D (Derivative) which can be arrived at by trial and error. The design of the control system depends on the choice of the three control constants Kp, Ki and Kd. These will change as per sea state and extra loads. The control of motions in shallow water and deep water cases are discussed in the paper. In the next part of the paper, fuzzy logic control is discussed. Fuzzy logic is applied to control the heading and bring the path of the vessel to the desired level. The models discussed are versatile because of the provision for add-on facility for wind, wave or any other environmental loads. The rudder turning rate is taken as that for commercial ships. In the near future, a combined control system for ship maneuvering can be possible by considering both the PID and Fuzzy based algorithm. The two algorithms with suitable modifications are useful for non-linear cases. The process of dried blood spot sampling involves simultaneous spreading and penetration of blood into a porous filter paper with subsequent evaporation and drying. Spreading of small drops of blood, which is a non-Newtonian liquid, over a dry porous layer is investigated from both theoretical and experimental points of view.A system of two differential equations is derived, which describes the time evolution of radii of both the drop base and the wetted region inside the porous medium. The system of equations does not include any fitting parameters. The predicted time evolutions of both radii are compared with experimental data published earlier.For a given power law dependency of viscosity of blood with different hematocrit level, radii of both drop base and wetted region, and contact angle fell on three universal curves if appropriate scales are used with a plot of the dimensionless radii of the drop base and the wetted region inside the porous layer and dynamic contact angle on dimensionless time. The predicted theoretical relationships are three universal curves accounting satisfactorily for the experimental data.

The present work deals with application of hydrodynamic cavitation for intensification of delignification of wheat straw as an essential step in the paper manufacturing process. Wheat straw was first treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) for 48 h and subsequently alkali treated wheat straw was subjected to hydrodynamic cavitation. Hydrodynamic cavitation reactor used in the work is basically a stator and rotor assembly, where the rotor is provided with indentations and cavitational events are expected to occur on the surface of rotor as well as within the indentations. It has been observed that treatment of alkali treated wheat straw in hydrodynamic cavitation reactor for 10–15 min increases the tensile index of the synthesized paper sheets to about 50–55%, which is sufficient for paper board manufacture. The final mechanical properties of the paper can be effectively managed by controlling the processing parameters as well as the cavitational parameters. It has also been established that hydrodynamic cavitation proves to be an effective method over other standard digestion techniques of delignification in terms of electrical energy requirements as well as the required time for processing. Overall, the work is first of its kind application of hydrodynamic cavitation for enhancing the effectiveness of delignification and presents novel results of significant interest to the paper and pulp industry opening an entirely new area of application of cavitational reactors.
